'Veep' and other TV shows that outgrew their titles

One thing that makes television so great (and different from film) is the luxury of multiple years and seasons to explore different moments and experiences in a character’s life as they naturally progress. Because of that, TV shows frequently evolve drastically from their tidy season 1 concepts, which can make their original titles a bit confusing.

With some minor spoilers ahead, here are six TV shows that might have benefited from a name change during their runs: READ FULL STORY

'Cougar Town': Talk about the season 5 premiere!

After a way-too-long hiatus, our favorite cul-de-sac crew is back for a fifth season. And this week’s title card stated what everyone was already thinking: “Season Five? Didn’t see that coming.” But the little show that could is still going strong, and I’ll gladly pound some grape to that!

The premiere episode, “All or Nothin,’” picked up where season 4 left off. The gang returned from their vacation to L.A., and Travis and Laurie reveled in their newfound romantic relationship. Unfortunately, the rest of the group wasn’t too keen on the new pairing. “It’s a complex range of emotions that can’t be expressed by mere words. I invented a sound to capture it: awwwblecch.” Yeah, Ellie, that’s pretty accurate. READ FULL STORY

This Week's Cover: 'Downton Abbey' keeps our Winter TV Preview classy

It’s the biggest PBS phenomenon since Sesame Street, and might very well be the classiest thing you do every Sunday night. Yes, Downton Abbey is returning on Jan. 5, and Entertainment Weekly was on the set for season four of the British TV phenomenon. Creator Julian Fellowes’ wildly popular period drama about life on a decadent English countryside estate shocked viewers last season with two major character deaths (we’ll never forget you, Matthew and Sybil!), and the show’s anticipated fourth season promises to be nothing short of shocking, exciting, and traumatic — which is just what we’ve come to expect of the Grantham and Crawley clan. Even guest star Shirley MacLaine was floored by the show’s drama: “When Matthew died I nearly threw a chair at the television. I thought, what is Julian Fellowes doing? It took me a few days to get over it.” READ FULL STORY

I'll be there for you: Mini-'Friends' reunions we can't get enough of

After hearing the latest news that the Bings are back, we couldn’t help but imagine what Ms. Chanandler Bong and his wife are up to now. Although we like to think that they are busy raising two very competitive and witty children, and that Joey is in fact living in an apartment above their garage (and teaching their children the art of “How you doin’”), we don’t actually know.

So while our Friends-loving hearts still wait for a real reunion (fingers crossed), we currently get through the day by reliving the handful of mini-reunions we’ve enjoyed over the years. Here’s a look back at the many times that we’ve sat at home and remembered the days of Joey’s sandwiches, Ross’ divorces and, of course, smelly cat: READ FULL STORY
