This Week On Stage: Orlando Bloom takes on the Bard and a Return to Oz

Everyone’s back to school and back to work, and that includes theater folk, as EW reinstates its This Week on Stage column to let you know what’s going on all over the country and what you should be spending those ducats on. The past week has seen a variety of new productions, from a new tour of a beloved family classic and the newest by one-half of the acclaimed Coen brothers to an unlikely opera chronicling a tragic pop culture figure and Legolas on the woo in the first Broadway revival of Romeo and Juliet in 36 years (click on the links below for the full reviews):

Anna Nicole  The late Playboy centerfold and troubled pop icon gets her very own opera, debuting at Brooklyn Academy of Music after a debut at London’s Royal Opera House in 2011. Could our Kyle Anderson resist the buxom beauty? He asks, “Are we meant to have sympathy for Smith or is she a figure of scorn? The show can’t decide.” but has nothing but praise for Sarah Joy Miller in the title role, countering, “[The show] is held aloft by Sarah Joy Miller’s performance in the title role.” EW grade: B-

Ryan Gosling joins long line of directors who have cast their wives and girlfriends in movies

Earlier this month, Ryan Gosling cast girlfriend Eva Mendes in his directorial debut, How to Catch a Monster. With production on the fantasy film set to begin this May, Gosling is a few months away from the joys and challenges of directing a significant other.

But Gosling is hardly the first director to cast his sweetheart in his own movie. Woody Allen is famous for dating (and sometimes marrying) many of his leading ladies, and Paul Newman also directed wife Joanne Woodward in multiple films.

Here’s a round-up of other men who have directed their actress significant others — some of whom are still going strong, while others’ relationships are in the rear-view mirror.

Paul W.S. Anderson and Milla Jovovich
This couple met while working on 2002′s Resident Evil. Since they began dating in 2003 (with a wedding following in 2009), Anderson and Jovovich have made four more films in the lucrative zombie franchise. The British director also cast his wife in his 2011 adaptation of The Three Musketeers.
Anderson on directing Jovovich: “I always call her the hardest working person in show business. I’ve never met an actor as dedicated as she is. She’s like the Terminator, relentless. It can be 2 a.m. in the morning, and she suggests we talk about some aspect of the film. How about we don’t, Milla? But we both just love making movies.” [Huffington Post]
Jovovich on working with Anderson: “I tell Paul every day, he spoils me. It is such a pleasure. We have our family together. We do these fun movies together. What am I going to do when I have to go work with somebody else?” [Huffington Post]
Are they still together? Yep. And they’re planning to continue their working relationship too — both are expected to return for a sixth Resident Evil installment. READ FULL STORY

FX's 'Fargo' series: Let's cast it!

fargo-poster.jpg

Fargo as a TV series? You betcha. Joel and Ethan Coen are reportedly executive producing an adaptation of their Academy Award-winning movie for the network that brought us Sons of AnarchyJustified, and American Horror Story.

This new project isn’t the first attempt to bring Fargo to the small screen — a Coen-free pilot for a Fargo TV series was filmed in 1997 and ultimately aired as part of a special in 2003.  The first televised Fargo starred Edie Falco as Marge Gunderson, the pregnant police officer immortalized by Frances McDormand in the film  — and if it were still 1997, I think Falco would be an excellent choice to strap on Marge’s fake belly for this new show as well.

But since Falco and McDormand are both a little too old to credibly play pregnant — and because William H. Macy and Steve Buscemi are a little busy with movie careers and cable series — which actors could step into their snowboots for this new FargoREAD FULL STORY
