You know the longer I do this show you’d think the less things would surprise me. Not so much. This Men Tell All was easily one of the strangest I’ve ever hosted, but in a really entertaining way. It all started with Ashley and JP, two people I love very much. It wasn’t enough just to catch up with them and find out what’s going on with the pregnancy and their new life together, oh no, we had to raise the bar and do a live ultrasound. When I heard we were going to attempt to pull this off I was a little skeptical, but I loved this moment. As soon as we heard that heartbeat you could really see JP and Ashley’s emotions and feel their love. It was a beautiful thing and I couldn’t be happier that they’re having a boy. I love being able to keep up with our former couples, but to have a moment like this was really fun. Seeing JP get tears in his eyes as he talked about having a son was priceless.

And then there were two. This season the final two weeks of our travels took us to the Dominican Republic. This week, the overnight dates were spent in and around the beautiful Paradisus hotel. I had visited the Dominican Republic many years ago and was looking forward to getting back to see how much had changed over the years. Andi came into this week with a clear head and incredibly happy with the three men she has narrowed it down to. Letting go of Marcus last week was difficult, but these three relationships are definitely different than the rest. As I told Andi after hometowns, it’s really an embarrassment of riches. I felt like she had done a terrific job of narrowing it down to a bunch of great guys. After hometowns her job wasn’t as much to find out if these guys were sincere but more so trying to decide which lifestyle fit best. Which man could she really see forever with?
I understand that much of what will be talked about this week centers on Eric Hill and how we decided to handle his tragic death. I will definitely get to that below, and I will fully explain how and why everything happened, but before that I do want to give a brief mention to each gentleman’s hometown as I think it was a very interesting group of hometown dates.
This week we set down in the beautiful city of Brussels, Belgium. This town is known for its rich history, chocolate, mussels, and now playing the United States in the knock-out phase of the World Cup. It’s amazingly ironic that we play them this Tuesday.
The week started out with me paying a visit to the guys to try to get a sense of how they were all feeling. This is a pretty intense group right now, and I know that’s because all of these men are falling or already in love with Andi. I can’t remember a season of The Bachelorette where so many of the men were head over heels in love with our girl at this point.
This week we touched down in easily one of, if not the most romantic cities in the world: Venice Italy. As Andi said herself, it’s almost impossible not to fall in love in Venice. We stayed in a small town just outside of Venice called Abano.
Andi met the boys in Venice and let them know the week would start off with a one-on-one date immediately. Most of the guys assumed that Cody would get it as he was the only guy left who hadn’t received a one-on-one yet. Much to Cody’s chagrin, Andi decided to give Nick the first date this week. Andi had some unresolved issues with Nick that were lingering from last week. Some of the guys Andi really believes in let her know that Nick wasn’t the most popular guy in the house and she was a bit worried about that. I think she took Nick on the first date this week to get to the bottom of that. The situation with Nick is one that I see a lot on the show. At what point are you just being bold, strong, and looking for love and at what point are you being rude or disrespectful? Nick hasn’t shied away from anything he’s said or done and completely owned up to it with Andi. If he’s denied it or acted like he was being bullied, it would have been a disaster for him, but instead he’s open and honest and flat out told Andi exactly how he feels. As you saw, Andi loved it and it only got deeper and better from her perspective at the rose ceremony. Nick and Andi have something strong between them, and he easily got the rose. READ FULL STORY
This week’s blog from comes to you from Paradise! I’d like to start off this week with an apology to our incredibly loyal Bachelor Nation. It was completely out of our control but we were off last week due to an ABC News interview with Hillary Clinton. When our show is on the air I know we are a weekly escape for you on Monday nights and I know you all look forward watching as much as I love hosting each week. Last week we left you hanging and we weren’t there for you. While I can’t promise that it won’t ever happen again, please know that I am incredibly sorry it happened and I was very happy to be back in our normal time slot with another great episode last night.
This week we left the US and took the season international, making our first stop in Marseille, France. Marseille is a quaint seaside town and it was the perfect backdrop for Andi to continue her search to find love. The episode started with me sitting down with her at a little street corner cafe. She was in really good spirits to start the week as she admitted to me she’s falling in love. The only issue is that it was happening with more than one person. I know it’s an odd thing to say, but it’s what happens when you come in and really open yourself up to the possibilities, like Andi has.
Josh finally got his first one-on-one date with Andi. He had to wait a while but the wait was worth it. Getting to walk along the harbor then take out a sailboat to one of the many islands just off the coast was an incredibly romantic experience. Andi is really attracted to Josh but she just hasn’t been able to get past the fact that he’s the same type of guy she always gets burned by. The fact that they are both so open about this really helped put some of her worries at ease, but later on she told me it’s still a lingering issue. There’s no doubt the physical chemistry is there between them, but the question for Andi is, is there depth? She looked back to her shallow relationship with Juan Pablo and was worried about falling for that again. The night portion of their date involved dinner and a concert in a castle that has been turned into a museum. After dinner the two of them walked out to find Ben Fields out front playing his new song. I was hiding there to hear the concert, and it was so cool. The acoustics out front of the castle were so good. All the people in buildings in the area were coming to their windows and balconies for the free show. READ FULL STORY
It’s a tough job, rose lovers, but someone has to travel to Mexico to help members of the Bachelor “family”
continue their weird and objectively gross inbreeding find “love.” And that someone is Mr. Chris Harrison. As you can see here from this first look at Harrison on the job at Bachelor in Paradise, the dress code for facilitating fairy-tale romance in Mexico — where BIP is shooting — is far more relaxed than it is in America. I have so many thoughts. Click the photo for a full-length version and let’s discuss. READ FULL STORY
I sat down to write this blog and suddenly I felt exactly how we all felt when we watched the full episode with the rose ceremony attached. You see as we went through this tragedy and mourned the death of this bright young man, Eric Hill, we were at the same time truly trying to figure out how to deal and mourn his death professionally. Early on, as I stated in a blog, it was clear to us we should show Eric’s scenes, and I still believe that was the right decision. But we’ve honestly made these decisions as we’ve gone along this season, each time just trying to do what’s right by Eric and his family, but also still telling everybody the story of what really happened to Andi and the rest of us during this journey. I hope you enjoyed night one of our special two-night Bachelorette event. Night two airs tonight in our regular Monday primetime slot. This week we were still at the mansion but all the dates were just north of LA up in the town of Santa Barbara. Nick got the first one-on-one date. Andi was impressed by Nick and was really looking forward to their date. It’s really interesting to see these men melt into nervous little boys when they get around Andi. We saw it with Josh last week, and we now saw it with Nick. Is it just me, or does Andi seem to have deeper more meaningful conversations than many Bachelorettes have in the past? Nick and Andi shared an incredible evening. He easily got the rose but more importantly, got his first kiss.
The group date this week was easily one of Andi’s favorite dates of the entire season. To this day she’s still talking about her time with Boyz II Men. I have to say that they were awesome to work with and our entire crew enjoyed this day. We took over an open-air mall in the middle of Santa Barbara called Paseo Nuevo. The way it all worked is the Boyz put on a little show for the big crowd that showed up. By the way, a huge thanks to the thousands that took the afternoon off to show up and party with us. It was a phenomenal crowd and they were fired up. After the Boyz got done, our “boys” got up and sang so poorly that whales were congregating off the coast. One of my favorite parts of the day was standing offstage with the band while the guys made us all endure their rendition of “I’ll Make Love To You.” We were laughing so hard we could barely contain ourselves. Everybody had fun with it and it was a great experience. READ FULL STORY
This week’s show aired on Memorial Day. I would be remiss if I didn’t give a special mention to those service men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. I know this day is about remembrance but I’d also like to salute all those who are currently serving this great nation. I hear from many soldiers who are proud members of Bachelor Nation. I love that this show can entertain and give you even a moment of rest from the great service you provide our country. It’s not nearly enough but, thank you.
Watching Eric’s one-on-one date, I think you can clearly see now why we made the decision to include his moments this season. He made a big impression on Andi the first night, but she also decided to give him the first date, and what a date it was. The date took them from the beaches of Southern California to the snow at Big Bear Mountain. It was a perfect date for an adventurous man like Eric, and he was clearly in his element. It’s fun to see the excitement on Andi’s face and how impressed she is with Eric’s life and spirit. Their conversations were deep and meaningful, yet easy. Eric easily got the first rose on the first one-on-one date and quickly became a front-runner in Andi’s mind and heart.
The good news about the first group date is it was part of Bachelor Gives Back, which raises money for a variety of charities. Now for the bad news: To raise that money I had to endure a bunch of dudes stripping in a room full of very excited women. On a serious note, I want to thank all those that spent their hard-earned money to buy a ticket, and then those that donated at the event with tips or just filling the hat we passed around. There was also a small group of fans that gave extra to our charity event to attend a special reception and meet-and-greet after the show. I really enjoyed meeting and taking pictures with all of you. I love Bachelor Nation but at times like this I especially love how big your heart and soul is. READ FULL STORY
