Most popular baby names: 'Twilight' holds top spot for boys' names, is toppled in the girls category

The Social Security Administration has released its list of 2011′s most popular baby names, and Twilight reigns supreme in the boys’ category as Jacob stays in the top spot for the 13th straight year. Isabella, however, has been ousted in favor of Sophia. A surprise resurgence of nostalgia for The Golden Girls? Probably not. Sophia has been gaining popularity over the last decade as a strong, traditional, ends-in-A name with celebrity cachet (Sophia Loren, Sofia Coppola); as with other things, a little Sofia Vergara likely made all the difference.

Celebrity kids continue to have an impact on naming trends across the board as top spots went once again to Ava (daughter or Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe) and Jayden (a name favored by both Will Smith and Britney Spears). The biggest jump went to Mason, a name that wasn’t even on the leaderboard last year. It appears Kourtney Kardashian’s son has spawned a new generation of little guys since it came out of nowhere to take the number 2 spot. It’s a big win for the Kardashian kwest to konquer the world, though there’s still ground to gain as the more traditional spelling of Chloe once again edged out Khloé with a K. Better luck next year, kids!

Beyond those names, it’s the usual suspects. Aiden and Emma — once boosted by hot sitcoms Sex and the City and Friends — have become established faves. With long-time top-10 inhabitants Emily and Daniel suddenly gaining prominence on Revenge, might Sophia and Jacob have some competition for the 2012 titles? Only time — and the fall TV season — will tell. See the full lists below. READ FULL STORY »

Alicia Silverstone feeds her infant son, baby-bird style. Ugh, as if! -- VIDEO

SILVERSTONE-BABY

Michael Bay isn’t the only person determined to sully your memories of the ’90s. A few days ago, Clueless star Alicia Silverstone wrote a blog post about sharing breakfast with her son. Sounds cute and harmless — until you get to this part: “I fed Bear the mochi and a tiny bit of veggies from the soup…from my mouth to his.”

Wait. Stop. Rewind. Cher Horowitz feeds her kid by spitting her already-chewed food directly into his mouth? I’ve heard of locavorism, but this is ridiculous.

While playing her most famous role, Silverstone advised girls to eat in front of the boys they liked, since “anything you can do to draw attention to your mouth is good.” I’m going to go out on a limb here and say, “Maybe not anything.” Check out a video of the feeding below — if you think you can stomach it.

Jessica Simpson: Pregnant, naked, and too hot for at least one Arizona grocery store

Jessica Simpson’s naked-and-pregnant ELLE cover has become a flashpoint at a Tucson Safeway, reports the AP. Though Simpson is not fully exposed on the cover of the April issue, franchise management decided to take action after receiving “multiple complaints.” Jezebel received an image of the cardboard cover-up that would otherwise be used to hide erotic magazines like Penthouse and Juggs. The Arizona Daily Star also reported seeing issues turned around at the Safeway in question.

Given the photo’s inspiration — Demi Moore’s similarly controversial August 1991 Vanity Fair cover — it’s no surprise Simpson’s cover is creating a stir. But where does the intent lie? READ FULL STORY »

Jessica Simpson poses nude for Elle, reveals she's having a girl

She’s no Demi Moore, but Jessica Simpson is certainly trying to be. The singer turned fashion designer graces this month’s cover of Elle magazine, not only nude, but also in an identical pose to Moore’s famed 1991 Vanity Fair cover. Her very large baby bump, however, isn’t the only thing the Fashion Star mentor revealed: she and fiancé Eric Johnson will be having a girl, something that Simpson predicted to People in December.

“I swear, I will croak if she asks me for a pair of Nikes instead of Christian Louboutins!” Simpson told Elle. “Eric is so athletic. We’re gonna have this athletic girl and I won’t even be able to take her shopping.” READ FULL STORY »

Chartreuse Algae must have been taken.

Congratulations to new mama Beyoncé and husband Jay-Z, and happy belated B’Day to baby Blue Ivy, who was born by Destiny (C-section) in NYC Saturday. Blue Ivy may sound like a detergent, trendy liqueur, or curious shade of denim (and surely within a few months all of these products will exist), but at least her parents won’t have to whip up an imaginary pop star name like “Lakoda Rayne” when she’s older.

Blue Ivy. The more I type it, the more I LIKE it. Maybe I’ve had too many shots of it!

Of course it wasn’t an easy road to Blue Ivy — when the news first broke this morning, people, confused by the genius they were beholding, passed along the baby’s name as Ivy Blue. (Thank you Gwyneth Paltrow, who swooped in this morning with a clarifying tweet. Goop in a pinch!) So already — along with “Aunty Gaga,” “Uncle Kanye,” and “Uncle Chris Brown” — #NamesBetterThanIvyBlue is trending on Twitter. Which is ridiculous, because what name could possibly be better than that? Okay, gotta go buy some jeans.

What’s The Price of Beauty? About $3 million if you’re Jessica Simpson. That’s how much the expectant mother is reportedly earning to in a deal with Weight Watchers. It seems Simpson will head directly from the delivery room to the treadmill this spring. All credit to Simpson for taking back control of her body, but couldn’t she have at least let the afterbirth dry? What message does this sprint back to her pre-baby body send to other new moms? 'Modern Family': Has Toddler Lily won your heart yet?

Now that the new season of Modern Family is well underway, it’s time we took a moment to discuss the show’s newest addition: Toddler Lily (a.k.a Aubrey Anderson-Emmons).

Show creators Steve Levitan and Christopher Lloyd have wisely refrained from shining too bright a spotlight on the newest member of the Pritchett clan — possibly because she inexplicably aged two years during the summer hiatus, but who cares when the show is this good. In last night’s episode, she showed up only briefly to ask Daddy Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) for some raisins, forcing him to confront the dirty kitchen left by Daddy Cam (Eric Stonestreet).

We got our best look at Lily 2.0 in episode 2, where her hostile attitude towards a new baby drove the Cam/Mitchell plotline. READ FULL STORY »

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: Two questionable mothers walk into a poll… In a survey of who has incurred the most rancor of the American public, Casey Anthony won the dubious honor of “The Most Hated Person in America.” Nadya “Octomom” Suleman came in a disrespectable third place. See who else made the list after the jump. READ FULL STORY »

Jessica Alba brings Jimmy 'How are babies made?' Kimmel to birthing class

Though she’s made her name primarily in popcorn flicks, Jessica Alba does like to exercise her funny bone now and again. The nine-months-pregnant actress stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live! last night and asked the funnyman to step in for her husband Cash Warren at birthing class. From pears-as-no-no-parts to perineal massage, Kimmel was unable to restrain himself from constantly dishing out snarky asides and blurting out the word “vagina” at the unflappable instructor. The results were predictably mortifying and hilarious. See the full video — and learn the baby’s name! — after the jump. READ FULL STORY »

'Pregnant in Heels' star Rosie Pope's iVillage blog: Best read while imagining her crazy accent

Rosie-Pope

One way to make Rosie Pope’s mommy blog on iVillage incredibly entertaining? Imagine the Bravo star reading it out loud in her curiously appealing accent. Believe me, it really makes reading about how to keep the post-baby heat in a relationship enjoyably trippy.

After the Pregnant in Heels premiere last week, I stumbled across a Tweet from Pope in which she described her accent as “southern English.” But I really couldn’t care less how you define it. I just want it — even with the slight lisp — because it’s so unique. If I had her accent, I think I’d immediately become a more interesting person — and I tend to believe I need all the help I can get in that area. READ FULL STORY »
