Will Arnett picks up Bill Clinton's sax for 'Arsenio'-inspired short -- VIDEO

Why is comedian Paul Scheer recreating classic moments from the original Arsenio Hall Show in a new YouTube series called The ArScheerio Paul Show? There’s really no explanation — beyond the fact that he’s doing it under the umbrella of JASH, an online comedy network devoted to offering all its partners “complete creative autonomy.” You know, just in case they want to do something like this. Weird comedy aficionados Sarah Silverman, Michael Cera, Reggie Watts, Tim Heidecker, and Eric Wareheim must approve — after all, they’re the “luminaries” who founded JASH.

Though Scheer steps into Hall’s shoes for his remake, the video manages to avoid any hints of minstrelsy — at least, until Will Arnett shows up as a mealy-mouthed Bill Clinton. The clip’s a fairly straightforward remake of Clinton’s famous 1992 Arsenio appearance, but Arnett’s interpretation of Slick Willie’s Arkansas drawl does give it a welcome hint of absurdity. Grab your shades and watch below.

On the scene: Barbra Streisand receives Film Society of Lincoln Center's Charlie Chaplin Award

Barbra Streisand is very bad at lip-synching and doesn’t like mornings. She’s very good at throwing dogs’ birthday parties and, when she needs a little push to portray the sensation of yearning, she imagines chocolate cake. These are the things I now know to be true.

If one can ever imagine sitting around Barbra’s Streisand’s home — perhaps in a nook of her underground mall, sharing stories about the legendary diva with her old pals and learning Babs’ “She’s just like us!” quirks — that was the vibe of last night’s Film Society of Lincoln Center gala, where Streisand received the 40th annual Charlie Chaplin Award for lifetime achievement. The multihyphenate, EGOT-ing artist and humanitarian was joined by a collection of her old friends — and, though many of them first met her professionally, they genuinely have become friends, some for decades. In addition to video tributes by Robert Redford and Omar Sharif, Streisand was treated to speeches and performances on stage by the likes of Bill Clinton, Liza Minnelli, Kris Kristofferson, Wynton Marsalis, George Segal, Amy Irving, Pierce Brosnan, Blythe Danner, Oscar-winning composer Alan Bergman, and Ben Stiller. Below, the highlights of the night. READ FULL STORY »

'Perks of Being a Wallflower,' 'New Normal,' Bill Clinton honored at GLAAD Media Awards

GLAAD Media Awards went to The Perks of Being a Wallflower and The New Normal on Saturday night for their thoughtful depictions of gay characters, while former President Bill Clinton received the inaugural Advocate for Change Award for his work campaigning to legalize same-sex marriage.

It was a redemptive moment for the ex-president, who in 1996 signed the Defense of Marriage Act, which defined marriage as a partnership only between a man and a woman. In recent years, Clinton has campaigned against anti-gay legislation proposed in various states, and has publicly called for the Supreme Court to overturn the law he once signed.

Stephen Colbert sets up Twitter account for Bill Clinton, has former prez dictate very first tweet

Tonight’s Colbert Report featured a suave, handsome icon beloved by millions for his political leadership and activism… as well as William Jefferson Clinton, the 42nd president of the United States.

Though the conversation between Clinton and Colbert — filmed at this year’s Clinton Global Initiative University, an annual meeting for college students and youth organizations — was certainly entertaining, it was also fairly predictable. Clinton was chatty and charming as always, while Colbert kept struggling valiantly not to be taken in by his guest’s charisma.

Near the end of the talk, though, Colbert had an actual surprise for Clinton: He had taken the liberty of setting up a brand-new Twitter account for the former president, who generally steers clear of social media. And while most of the monikers Colbert tried to snag were already taken, “@PrezBillyJeff” just happened to be free. (Who woulda thunk it?) Clinton, ever the good sport, proceeded to dictate his first-ever tweet to Colbert from the stage; you’ll find that special message below. READ FULL STORY »

Bill Clinton to be honored at GLAAD Media Awards

Barack Obama may be America’s “first gay president” — but Bill Clinton is the (former) commander-in-chief GLAAD has chosen to honor at its Media Awards in Los Angeles this month. (The advocacy group’s New York Media Awards ceremony was held March 16 in Manhattan; its San Francisco awards are scheduled for May 11.)

Clinton will receive GLAAD’s inaugural Advocate for Change Award. The ex-president began advocating for marriage equality in 2011, worked against North Carolina’s proposed amendment to ban both marriage and civil unions for gay couples, and recently penned an op-ed urging the Supreme Court to overturn the Defense of Marriage Act — a bill that Clinton himself originally signed in 1996.

“President Clinton’s support of the LGBT community and recognition that DOMA, the so-called Defense of Marriage Act, is unconstitutional and should be struck down shows that the political landscape continues to change in favor of LGBT equality,” GLAAD strategic giving officer Wilson Cruz said in a statement. “Leaders and allies like President Clinton are critical to moving our march for equality forward.”

Matt Damon's great Bill Clinton impression feels your pain -- VIDEO

Hold the phone — Matt Damon hasn’t hosted Saturday Night Live since 2002?! That’s bananas. The show could definitely use a strong dose of Bourne 1.0 in 2013 — especially if Damon whips out his unexpectedly spot-on Bill Clinton impersonation.

The Promised Land star did that impression on The Tonight Show yesterday, regaling Jay Leno with an anecdote about a screening of Good Will Hunting at Camp David circa 1997. He sounded just like our 42nd president — or, at least, like Darrell Hammond speaking as our 42nd president. And as a bonus, the story revealed why Clinton loves Tom Hanks. (It’s not just because everybody loves Tom Hanks.)

Snoop Lion endorses Obama

Image Credit: Frederick M. Brown/Getty Images

First let’s clear the air: Snoop Dogg now goes by Snoop Lion.  His self-reinvention, the result of his recent adoption of Rastafari and reggae music, is chronicled in the appropriately titled documentary Reincarnation, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival.  At the press conference for that film, the reborn rapper behind “Gin and Juice” took the opportunity to voice his eloquent support for President Obama.

“Let me begin, Obama for four more years, man,” Snoop said. “Bush f—-d up for eight years, so, I mean, you gotta at least give [Obama] eight years. He cleaned half the s–t up in four years, realistically. It ain’t like y’all gave him a clean house. Y’all gave him a house where the TV didn’t work, the toilet was stuffed up – everything was wrong with the house.”

The rest of Snoop’s enlightened political commentary touched on Osama bin Laden–”He knocked down our most hated, the most wanted, the one who had our terror on orange or red or whatever color it was on – he went and found him, the one Bush couldn’t seem to find, the one who seemed to fly away in the dead of night and all that”–and Bill Clinton’s speech at the DNC–”You heard what Clinton said. You loved Clinton, didn’t you?”

Snoops remarks present a stark contrast to Nicki Minaj’s momentous support for Mitt Romney.  But President Obama, for his part, doesn’t really care about Nicki’s statement, and odds are he respond to this endorsement from Snoop.

Obama's speech sets new Twitter record

The Internet has a lot of feelings about President Obama. So many, in fact, that its citizens set a new record last night: Twitter reports that about 52,756 Tweets per minute were written about Obama’s convention speech just after its conclusion. That’s a record for a political event, Twitter spokesperson Elaine Filadelfo told Politico. Mitt Romney’s convention speech, by contrast, drove 14,289 tweets per minute at its peak.

All in all, users sent over 9.5 million tweets about the DNC, crushing the 4 million tweets written about the RNC. Twitter users wrote 4 million messages about the Democratic convention on Day 3 alone. Thanks a lot, #sexyface!

But it’s not all sunshine and hashtags in Donkeyville.  READ FULL STORY »

Democratic National Convention, day 2: Top 15 faces of people waiting to hear Bill Clinton

There is little doubt that former President Bill Clinton’s speech during Wednesday night’s Democratic National Convention was nothing less than a barn-burner. “Loose and ebullient, sprinkling his text with ad libs, Clinton reminded viewers what a powerful speaker he is, and how his pleasure in speechifying can be contagious,” wrote EW’s Ken Tucker. “Obama has his work cut out for him [Thursday] night to top this.”

Clinton’s oratory had the added effect of blasting away the cobwebs from an evening of speeches from non-professional speakers that ranged from agreeably engaging to stilted and bland — in marked contrast to the DNC’s first night of expertly choreographed and electrically delivered addresses. One need only look over the faces of the convention crowd Tuesday night to get a sense that many attendees were pretty much just waiting for the evening’s headliner to show up already. Forthwith, I give you the top 15 faces of people biding their time for Bill Clinton, rating their state of political lethargy ranging from 1 (fifth season of The West Wing) to 10 (five-hour C-SPAN broadcast about sorghum futures). Enjoy!  READ FULL STORY »
