Alec Baldwin has words for flight attendants in online, er, 'apology'?

Alec Baldwin was kicked off of an American Airlines flight on Monday, in part, for refusing to stop playing Words With Friends, but the 30 Rock star certainly had no shortage of words when he wrote a piece for The Huffington Post regarding the incident titled “My Flying Lesson.” (Ah, if only Carol had been his Captain!)

The now Twitter-less star (he quit the social networking site hours after sending out a series of angry tweets at the airline) had way more than a 140 characters in what can only be described as a non-apology apology. While Baldwin does begin his open letter by apologizing to his fellow passengers on the flight (“It was never my intention to inconvenience anyone”) the actor mostly aired his frustrations with the airline industry in general. Alec Baldwin has plenty of prestigious titles in Hollywood (Emmy winner, Oscar nominee, the good Baldwin brother), but he added two more (arguably less prestigious) bragging rights to his resume this week: Celebrity booted from a plane and a Twitter quitter.

One day after Baldwin was kicked off of an American Airlines flights after refusing to stop playing his Words with Friends game and went on a Twitter rampage about the incident (one tweet read, “Flight attendant on American reamed me out 4 playing WORDS W FRIENDS while we sat at the gate, not moving. #nowonderamericaairisbankrupt”), the 30 Rock star deactivated his account from the social networking site in light of the controversy. Alec Baldwin joins the pantheon of booted-from-planes celebrities... and leaves Twitter

It seems like celebrities being kicked off of airplanes is becoming as synonymous to air travel as those hard-to-open bags of peanuts, tiny bathrooms, annoying Captain spiels, and cliched jokes about the perils of flying.

On Tuesday, Alec Baldwin joined the growing list of stars who have been booted from planes. But Baldwin’s exit might be the best one yet, or at the very least, the most relatable considering a game of Words With Friends got him in trouble with American Airlines. The 30 Rock actor told his followers on Twitter, “Flight attendant on American reamed me out 4 playing WORDS W FRIENDS while we sat at the gate, not moving. #nowonderamericaairisbankrupt.” (I like to imagine he was deeply immersed in a wildly competitive game with John Krasinski in which he kept using Yankees terminology.) Boardwalk Empire‘s Steve Buscemi ushered in the holiday season Saturday night, hosting SNL for the first time since 1998. Back then, he was a revered character actor most famous for playing the “weaselly thug” from Fargo who got shoved into a wood-chipper. Poll: Did Jason Segel (and the Muppets!) steal the 'Saturday Night Live' spotlight?

Jason Segel received more than a little help in his first outing as host of Saturday Night Live. Not only did the Muppets take the time to get things started, but Segel later made out with his I Love You, Man co-star, Paul Rudd. Audience reaction seemed mixed, but I thought Segel fit right in with the cast. Embracing the shame is part of Segel’s comic DNA — see Forgetting Sarah Marshall — so I loved his commercial for the Kemper-Pedic mattress. But how does he compare with the season’s top hosts so far? Melissa McCarthy remains the frontrunner in EW’s season-long hunt to determine the best SNL host, with 55.3 percent of last week’s vote. Emma Stone was the first choice of 34.8 percent of voters, and Charlie Day (5.8 percent) and Alec Baldwin (3.2 percent) are still hanging on. The Guys could use a boost. READ FULL STORY »

Poll: Who was better on 'Saturday Night Live'? Emma Stone or Melissa McCarthy?

Anna Faris is out. Emma Stone is up. EW’s season-long hunt to determine the best Saturday Night Live host kicked off last week, with voters celebrating Melissa McCarthy with an overwhelming 74.2 percent of the vote. Charlie Day (12.1 percent), Alec Baldwin (9.8 percent), and Ben Stiller (2.3 percent) survived to compete against Stone, who was well-received in her return to the show. Her awkward bridal-shower guest and 1964 Miss America winner held their own against Kristen Wiig’s comic creations, proving that Stone belongs in the conversation of talented recent hosts.

But who’s been the best host so far this season? As explained last week, this isn’t a popularity contest; simply “Who had the best Saturday Night Live episode?” Below, I’ve embedded one clip for each of the five hosts, just to remind you of their recent performances. Vote below, and the host with the least popular support will be eliminated, and the other four will advance next week to compete against Saturday’s host, Jason Segel. Ultimately, we’ll eliminate the less buzzy hosts and crown a Host With the Most at the end of Saturday Night Live‘s season. Can anyone touch McCarthy, or is this race already won? Poll: Who has been the best 'Saturday Night Live' host so far this season?

For an entertainer, hosting Saturday Night Live for the first time is a huge career moment, recognizing not only that they’ve arrived, but that they’re cool. Just think about all the hosts over the years who’ve begun their monologue with wide-eyed giddiness about where they’re standing and gone on to gush about the legends they grew up watching on the same stage. Hosting SNL, however, is also a terrifying high-wire act that can be humbling or even humiliating. Not every star has the ability to be funny live, and when they’re not, there’s only so much the talented ensemble can do. But overwhelmed, deer-in-the-headlights hosts simply make you appreciate the greats, like Alec Baldwin, Jon Hamm, Justin Timberlake, and Tom Hanks, even more. Alec Baldwin may not be running for mayor of New York City (yet), but he proved to be a true man of the people to those involved with the Occupy Wall Street movement. Last night, the 30 Rock star visited Zuccotti Park in downtown Manhattan, home of OWS, to show his support.

Baldwin tweeted late Tuesday night (after 6 p.m., and presumably not in a tux), “On my way to OWS” and later informed followers that he spent “a too brief two hours” at the site and gave a shout-out to “Aaron from Brooklyn and Sean from Winnipeg” for his “OWS tutorial.” (No word on exactly what Baldwin, Aaron and Sean talked about, but we can’t imagine he recited too many 30 Rock lines. Especially not this one: “Next stop, home ownership! I’m just kidding. The middle class is dying. 'Saturday Night Live' recap: The return of the king (a.k.a. Alec Baldwin)

Well, summer is officially over, PopWatchers. There’s no way of sugarcoating it, either. It totally stinks. But hey, at least with the fall comes a new season…of television! (See what I did there?) Now, if you were wondering how the writers of Saturday Night Live, which kicked off its 37th season last night, spent their summer vacations, the answer was right in front of you: penning that 10-minute opening sketch.

So how exactly did they make a 10-minute long skit bearable? Well besides there being no Fred Armisen as President Obama in sight (yeah, I said it!), they did what they often do best: riff on the current political climate. Kicking things off with “either the seventh or eighth” GOP debate, moderator Shepard Smith (played my personal pick for SNL MVP, Bill Hader) announced that he comes from a town “full of secrets,” then introduced Mitt Romney (I’d say “Welcome back, Jason Sudeikis!”, but we know what you did this summer) and Rick Perry (host Alec Baldwin). Then he introduced “six other people who will never be President, but showed up anyway,” including Jon Huntsman (Taran Killam), Ron Paul (Paul Brittain), Herman Cain (Kenan Thompson), Rick Santorum (Andy Samberg), Michelle Bachmann (Kristen Wiig) and Newt Gingrich (Bobby Moynahan). 'SNL': Alec Baldwin and Radiohead kick off the 37th season premiere. Talk about it here!

Justin Timberlake is no easy act to follow. The singer/actor is so popular as a Saturday Night Live host — thanks to instantly classic skits (“Omeletteville,” “Single Ladies” ) and viral Digital Shorts (“Motherlover“) — he might as well be named a cast member already. Timberlake worked his magic once again when he hosted the finale of the 36th season of SNL back in May, ending a shaky season on a high note (and by high note, we of course mean this), which earned him yet another Emmy nomination for his work on the series.

Then again, when it comes to hosting SNL, there’s perhaps no one better suited for the task than Alec Baldwin. Luckily, he’ll be fulfilling those duties for a record-breaking 16th time for tonight’s season premiere. Baldwin, alongside musical guests Radiohead (who should get a nice warm-up for their upcoming stints on The Colbert Report and at NYC’s Roseland Ballroom), will open the 37th season of the late night TV institution. The big question isn’t so much “Will you be watching SNL?” as, “Will both Baldwin and Radiohead replay their greatest hits or will they try out some new material?” READ FULL STORY »
