'22 Jump Street': 10 pop-culture references you might have missed (and three you wish you had)

No doubt fans of 21 Jump Street recognized plenty of callbacks and self-deprecating cracks made by Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum in the über-meta sequel 22 Jump Street. From a running gag about how sequels are more expensive versions of the exact same thing (including undercover partners Schmidt and Jenko’s high-tech new HQ, which Jenko describes as cool “as a Cube of Ice”) to the line “F— you, doves!” (surely a throwback to the first installment’s fan-favorite line “F— you, science!”), the movie was chockablock with them.

That said, judging from some conspicuous moments of silence during gags at the screening I attended on Friday night, some of the deeper-cut references went over viewers’ heads. Hill is a real comedy geek and co-directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s The LEGO Movie was bursting at the seams with pop-culture riffs, so it’s only fair that more of their flourishes get full credit.

Below, we list a few of 22 Jump Street‘s loving homages to comedy greats, cameos, and gangsta rap. (SPOILERS!) READ FULL STORY

Jimmy Fallon has one question for Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill, and Ice Cube: 'Sup'? -- VIDEO

FALLON-SUP-22-JUMP-ST.jpg

22 Jump Street stars Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill, and Ice Cube surely had plenty to say about their new film when they stopped by The Tonight Show on Friday. But host Jimmy Fallon had just one question for the stars: “Sup?”

It’s a simple question that the pals made unnecessarily complicated, answering the greeting in the most ridiculous ways possible. Sup-sounding replies included: soap, lentil soup, sippy cup and… Patrick Duffy?

Tatum and Hill bro out in the new comedy, going undercover as college kids, so we get the joke. But the bit comes this-close to bringing on flashbacks of those “Wassup!” Budweiser commercials, a piece of nostalgia no one needed.

See Ice Cube say very nice things very angrily

Ice Cube has a, er, distinct demeanor, which often makes it sound like he’s angry all the time. (See: 21 Jump Street, 22 Jump Street, Ride Along, etc.)

Jimmy Kimmel wanted to put this theory to the test Thursday night — so he asked the Jump Street star to read a few aggressively innocuous phrases in Ice Cube’s “imitable” style.

Word of warning: You haven’t truly seen someone longing for The Notebook until you’ve seen Ice Cube yelling about it with a threatening edge in dimmed lighting: READ FULL STORY

This week's cover: Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum get bromantic for '22 Jump Street'

JH + CT 4EVA.

Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum are perfect for each other — anyone can see that. The stars of 22 Jump Street may be going back to school this Friday, but they have a kind of chemistry that can’t be taught. “If I wasn’t with my wife and Jonah had lady parts,” says Tatum, “I would probably ask him out.”

In this week’s Entertainment Weekly, Hill and Tatum discuss their new movie, a sequel so self-aware it’s practically sentient, and  trade jokes, compliments, and insults like one of those couples who finish each other’s sentences and french fries. “We are a quote-unquote odd couple,” says Hill. “That dynamic is true of our relationship on screen and off screen. We are incredibly different, we come from incredibly different worlds, and it is a yin and yang thing.” READ FULL STORY

Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill made an X-rated '21 Jump Street' bet

If you ever gamble with Channing Tatum, you should know what he means by going “all in.”

Monday on Conan, the 22 Jump Street star revealed the terms of a bet he made with his co-star, Jonah Hill, back when 21 Jump Street was released. If a movie breaks $30 million in its first weekend, Tatum explained, then it’s done very well for itself. But when 21 Jump Street premiered, Tatum was feeling even more confident, telling Hill the film would do over $35 million. Hill said that if it did, he would kiss the tip of Tatum’s penis — “over the boxers,” he specified. “I’d say that’s a key piece of fabric for the story.”

PopWatch Planner: '22 Jump Street' in theaters, 'Veep' finale, Jack White's new album, and more

If you thought June would be your time to take a little pop culture break and maybe binge a few shows you’d never gotten to start, we’ve got some bad news: There’s no time for that. Between finales of some of HBO’s strongest shows — Veep and Game of Thrones — award shows, new books, albums, and movies, there’s very little time for you to play catch-up. So maybe save that for next week? Although, we make no promises that you’ll have time.

Channing Tatum spoofs Jean Claude Van Damme Volvo ad with epic split -- VIDEO

channing-tatum-01.jpg

Though we haven’t even seen a teaser trailer yet, the folks behind the upcoming 22 Jump Street decided to have a little fun behind the scenes by spoofing the new Volvo ad featuring Jean Claude Van Damme and his unbelievably flexible body.

In terms of flexibility, Channing Tatum proved he has plenty in Magic Mike. But the former Sexiest Man Alive (now that guy with tattoos has the title) got into character for the upcoming sequel to show off his own epic abilities.
