What pop culture entity will you give a second chance in 2009?

Categories: Happy Holidays, Music

Taylorswift_l It's a new year, traditionally the time for reassessment and resolution, and one of mine was to keep a cleaner house. In the process of scrubbing down the living room -- where are all these spiders coming from??? -- I tidied up a stray stack of CDs, and found myself holding the sophomore effort from one Ms. Taylor Swift. She's everywhere, that one, and regular readers of this blog are aware of the fact that I have little to no patience for her as a performer. Yes, Virginia, it is possible to respect her talents as a songwriter and yet never want to hear her sing.

I record Dick Clark every year to watch with my coffee on New Year's Day; she was there, too, bleating out the hitz for a bunch of freezing people in Times Square who hadn't peed in four hours. As I watched her unzip her fleece jacket to reveal a sparkly dress -- always with the costume changes on TV, Taylor Swift! What on earth could you be trying to distract us from? -- I found myself once again totally zoning to the flat, uninteresting warble of her voice. But today, as I was cleaning, Fearless all but bit me, so I decided to crack it open for the first time since loading it onto my iPod. In the liner notes, at the bottom of a long list of thank yous, I read the following line: "And to the boys who inspired this album, you had fair warning." And I smiled. I'll be damned if that simple sentence didn't make me want to like her -- or at least stop using the phrase "cardboard and dental floss, lit up with flashlights" to describe her.

So PopWatchers, you heard it here first: In the interest of what I am currently calling "2009: A New Hope," I am going to give Taylor Swift a second chance, effective immediately.

What about you? Are there singers, bands, movies, TV shows, or books you feel you may have judged too harshly, or too quickly, that you're prepared to reexamine during this, the season of charity and forgiveness? If the stock market can shoot back up above 9,000, is there perhaps a pop culture entity whose stock can go up in your personal market, too? Feel free to share it in the comments. I'll be over here gritting my teeth and trying to get "Love Story" out of my head. But at least I'm trying.

Apparently Joe Jonas did NOT read the liner notes.

C. Crunk Tue, Jan 6, 2009 at 09:01 PM EST

One, Taylor has had very intense vocal training and over the past year there has been a dramatic change. She is phenominal with her creative side of her shows. Two, I will never give the Jonas Brothers a chance. When they sing all they do is whine and slide their notes. Theyre the awful ones.

Dibs Tue, Jan 6, 2009 at 01:00 PM EST

You were absolutely right the first time. Most of her songs would be better if sung by other people - despite her delightful personality.

tinytvfan Tue, Jan 6, 2009 at 06:21 AM EST

To the people who've mentioned giving "Lost" a second chance, I just want to suggest you catch up on the previous seasons first. I was one of those who struggled through a season that I didn't think was up to par w/the rest, (Season 2 for me), but I'm glad I did, b/c man did it get good again in Season 3 and, especially, in Season 4. If you haven't watched since Day 1 you have no hope of following what's going on. I've seen every ep and I still get a bit "Lost" sometimes :) Last time I checked ABC.com had all the seasons available. As for what I'm giving a second chance to this year, mine is actually more of a first chance: I'm going to listen to Taylor Swift. That's right, folks: I've somehow managed to avoid hearing her thus far. So, here goes nothin'!

subho bhattacharyya Tue, Jan 6, 2009 at 03:03 AM EST

Oh!!!! She look like very beautiful in this picture.Wanna see more beautiful pictures........click on www.uploaded.tv

megan Tue, Jan 6, 2009 at 01:01 AM EST

everyone complains about people lip synching but when someone actually is learning to become a good live singer? it's all "omg, i can't listen!". she's 18, she'll learn or she'll start lip synching. either way she's the best thing to happen to country music since tim mcgraw and faith hill were married.

BOSTON Tue, Jan 6, 2009 at 12:08 AM EST

Yea, I agree w/ you, Whitney. I don't think Swift can sing at all. Her songs are catchy, but that's it--the girl has no vocal skills whatsoever; she sing in the same 3 notes over & over again. She's cute--yes, just cute, not BEAUTIFUL as some people insist (she's got the Hollywood makeup artists all over, of course she's gonna look like that)--w/ catchy, fun tunes...but she's not any soon to be--or "take the crown away from" (as some people say)--Carrie Underwood.

2009 A New Hope...Episode IV. When do we find out that Taylor is a robot? Which episode again? Good thing the one person I trust to sift through pop culture for me is actually digging through her cd stack. There might be hope for us all and a little love when we least expect it.

gj Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 08:06 PM EST

I was bored to death during the Twilight movie, the only reason why I made it through the whole thing was because I was simultaneously running the book through my head. But I realized that the castings actually were very good, it's just the script and special effects that ruined the movie and made the acting seem incredibly bad. I think Rob Pattinson and Kristin Stewart actually did very good considering the disjointed crap they were given to work with.

I just don't know.... Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 06:45 PM EST

I'm going to continue to watch Grey's Anatomy. Because it has that "train wreck I don't want to look at but can't turn away from" pull on me. It's so horrible I can't stop watching to see how horrible it will continue to get. Dead Denny... yeah Shonda... GREAT idea. (Although that Jeffrey Dean Morgan is one hot SOB)
I'm going to give Britney another chance. It actually seems like she's getting her sh*t together, and I really like a couple of tracks off her new album. Very catchy dance music. :)

MultiPass Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 06:09 PM EST

god love ya whitney. You are one perfect chick. Anyone who writes the "cardboard, floss" line should finish their book/script/whatever and get the heck out of the EW blog ghetto. Wonderful.

That said, I am going to give Mikey Ausiello one more chance. His shmarmy style, bad taste, ridiculous job, and blatant starf***ing have mostly made me hate Hollywood and TV even more than I used to. But he is in a position of enormous power and that is interesting enough to warrant scrutiny at the very least. He's either very very charming or married to the mob. Or a coke dealer. Or all 3.

Anyway, why not? It's either him or Janet Jackson's latest and frankly, I can't go back after Discipline shredded and recycled my soul.

LisaM Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 06:01 PM EST

I'm thinking about seeing the Twilight movie. The book wasn't very good and the movie didn't get very good reviews, but I still kinda wanna see the movie.

Robin Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 05:29 PM EST

I can't stop listening to Fearless! It's such a great CD...there really isn't bad song on it...I have listened to it almost nonstop (i.e. at least once a day if not more) since I got it as a gift on Christmas Eve. Just in the last few days have I started skipping one of the songs...I hope she tours this year because I'd love to go see her perform live!

alyssa Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 05:06 PM EST

I have no patience for taylor swift's live performances. Her warbling, nasally voice is not pleasant for me. However, I do love her songwriting and I can tolerate her singing when it has been touched up in the studio, so I will give Taylor Swift a second chance as well, I think!

Sally in Chicago Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 05:05 PM EST

"cardboard and dental floss, lit up with flashlights"

Oh Whitney you are the sarcastic one.

Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 04:51 PM EST

Good for you

Sydney Bristow Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 04:28 PM EST

Heroes gets one last shot.

dave Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 04:04 PM EST

I guess I'll be giving Heroes another chance. I hope I'm not disappointed again.

LeeDawg Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 03:38 PM EST

I'm going to give Heroes another chance. If they would only get rid of Mohinder...

Miss B Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 03:30 PM EST

I was going to give Privileged a second chance, after watching only the first two episodes, but then they up and fired Michael Cassidy. So now I'm going to continue not watching it.

Jay Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 03:25 PM EST

I'm gonna try Mad Men again. I watched the first two episodes and found them really boring, but I'm gonna give it another shot. Also, maybe I'll try to get through season 4.0 of Battlestar Galactica (After struggling all through season 3, I threw my hands up in the air after season 4's 4th episode. Seriously, you guys, it's SO predictable.)

Kalie Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 03:23 PM EST

I think Taylor Swift is worth a second chance. I can appreciate the fact that she's different from a lot of the other teen sensations. She writes all of her own songs and she doesn't try so hard to be sexy and controversial. She comes off as cute, wholesome and honest. I've only heard her perform live once or twice, and she sounded fine, so I'm not sure about her so-called poor live performances. I guess we'll see when she's on SNL this week.

angela Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 03:12 PM EST

I think I will try getting over my everything pop and R&B on MTV is not good phase. I actually like a few of the new songs that Beyonce has...arghhh...it hurts me even a little to admit that. As far as shows go I recently started watching Bones and I love it.

jaime Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 02:59 PM EST

I CANT STOP LISTENING TO HER CD!!!!

THE LYRICS ARE AMAZING!!!!

2nd Chances Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 02:38 PM EST

I'd love to give this Taylor Swift kid a chance because I hear so much about how she writes her own songs. I've seen her perform live on 3 different occasions, and I just don't understand. She looks like she should be able to sing, but I think she's godawful as a live performer. If her album sounds better, I might be willing to get it. As long as I'm not subjected to seeing/hearing her live.

I'd also LOVE to give Lost another chance. I loved that show, and then one day I just stopped wayching. The promos look so good, I just don't know if I'd be "lost" after all this time.

Heather Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 02:31 PM EST

I think I'll finally get around to Fringe. I dismissed it since it didn't grab me like JJ's other works. In addition, I will get around to watching Mad Men instead of leaving it on the back burner.

Manda Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 01:55 PM EST

Paula is the best! i love her. I look forward to seeing her on Idol and whatever other projects she has coming up. Gooo Paula

Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 01:47 PM EST

to the idiot that said something about paula: well, keep on "dreaming". Paula is gonna have a great year 2009 and she is HERE TO STAY. idol producers said so. she and her Friend Kara are gonna be hilarious to watch together

curt Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 01:40 PM EST

I beg of you, please don't give her a 2nd chance--she's isn't deserving. How this no talent airhead has made it really shocks me. Her vocals are flat and unemotional. Who cares about her songs based on sordid relationships w/ gay men? I've watched her "perform" on 2 different shows & she was lifeless & BORING. When is the rest of the world going to wake-up and realize she has nothing to offer?

Snarf Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 12:58 PM EST

No second chances - except for the odd reality TV show. lol

kellen Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 12:29 PM EST

maybe, just maaaaaaaaybe grey's anatomy... it definitely hasn't done enough to bump csi or the office/30 rock from my season pass list, but when those shows aren't on, i may flip over to ABC and see what's happening with the doctors i used to love back in season 2

JoeC Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 12:24 PM EST

Oh by the way, I have FINALLY given in and have acquired my first ever I-Pod. So we'll see how that goes. As soon as I learn to program it, of course...lol!!!!

Em Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 12:24 PM EST

I'm giving 24 a second chance.

JoeC Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 12:22 PM EST

I'm going to give 'Fringe' a chance; I have never seen this show. We will see........And I am going to start watching 'House' again; haven't this year.....

Heather Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 12:16 PM EST

I want to like Taylor Swift so much. I mean she's cute and not too in your face sexy. She writes her own music, plays guitar, and has a good back story. But Lord Have Mercy she cannot sing!!! She sounds so good on her CD and on radio, but live? I have to turn the channel every time. It is so disappointing.

denny Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 12:08 PM EST

I'm giving radio a second chance. Yeah, it's not so much a "pop culture entity" as a corporately-controlled bane of my existence, but in the few minutes I've spent listening to it the past two weeks (switching music between my old iPod and my new one is taking longer than expected), I've been pleasantly surprised by their playlists. I'm still too much into music from abroad (mostly the UK and Australia) to completely give in to the American radio scene, but if radio keeps going on the upward trend I've experienced recently, then maybe I can bear to listen to it in my car again (it's literally been about four years since I've seriously listened to radio).

In that vein, I'm willing to give Britney Spears a second chance this year, as Circus totally took me back to 1999. In a really good way. I'm not saying I'm going to buy her album or anything, but I won't resent her without reservation so much this year. Until she has yet another mental breakdown.

strickens_girl Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 11:55 AM EST

I'm going to give Lost another chance. Season 3 lost me completely - I gave up about half way through. But the trailers for this last season coming up look interesting and I'd really like to know what the heck the island really is. Hopefully it won't disappoint.

Jenna Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 11:32 AM EST

I'm giving Fringe another try if only to get my mom off my back. I watched one episode, and I wasn't too into it. Maybe I'll think I'm cheating on House of something, which is just silly, right?

If the House writers are reading this...Fringe means NOTHING to me! NOTHING!

also, taylor swift, though iffy as a performer at best, is a killer song writer. her CD has not left my side since it came out. I don't skip any songs, which is rare...for me at least. love her.

My Thoughts Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 11:17 AM EST

I always swear off Idol, and I really meant it after last season...BUT, the hype about the changes might be drawing me back in. I may give them one last chance. I'm also giving Fringe another chance, IF I can watch the last 3 episodes still lingering in my DVR.

Winona Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 11:11 AM EST

Over the weekend, my nieces subjected me to repeat listenings of the Jonas Brothers' "Lovebug" - and SHOCK! - it wasn't half bad. And by that I mean I really didn't like the treacly first half of the song, but loved the rockin' second half. Perhaps I should give these guys a listen.

Hey - Rob Grizzly Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 10:55 AM EST

I can't stand the auditioning on AI either. I "skim" through one or two of them, then wait until the 'final' 24 (36 this season) get chosen. Then I can enjoy the show. Strangely enuf, the other half likes the auditions, but can't stand to sit through the many weeks of final contestants.

Zet Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 10:51 AM EST

I'm going to give Fringe another try. The plot holes and idiocies of the first 2 eps had me running. But recently, a friend said he really liked the show, so maybe I missed something? And in the too little, too late category, I'm going to give Aerosmith another try. I heard a few songs during the holidays, and damn, if they didn't sound good. I'll check them out again, just to see if it was the Christmas spirit, or if I've truly missed something.

J Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 10:44 AM EST

Taylor Swift is so much more than you are able to see. Do you need a resume for crying out loud. Here is a brief list of highlights that make her every bit worth listing to. She is an exemplary representation of what talent, grit, determination and phenomenal parenting can develop. Millions of girls have dreams and no support system to achieve them. This family is a stark exception. I have witnessed so much dream killing parents bestow in the belief they know better than their children. Not the Swifts, and I congratulate them as much as their daughter. Top that off with the confidence in their daughter's ability, if not only the acknowledgement that they needed to get Taylor out of the hostile town they were in and away from the cruel kids who wanted to shatter her dream, and this is more than a story of a songwriter. And she is good. Honestly sharing the emotions that millions experience and genuinely grateful that she gets to do that. You are too cold hearted to blog.

Jason Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 10:30 AM EST

It would be best if Taylor Swift retired from singing and wrote songs for other people, but I guess she has a right to her dream.

Dennis N. Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 10:10 AM EST

I've lifted my almost 10-year ban on Dave Matthews Band. I resisted the college-kid-I'm-indie-so-I-must-love-Dave sentiments fiercely. Then suddenly, while impatiently mashing through the presets in my car, I listened to "Ants Marching" on the "We're Cool Too" adult mix station and thought to myself, "Huh. Maybe I was too harsh." We'll see how long it lasts.

Amanda Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 10:08 AM EST

Secret Life of the American Teenager, I tried when it first came on and I thought it was cheesy and obnoxious but I just happened to turn on the marathon yesterday and spent half my day watching it. Consider me hooked!

dave-o Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 10:07 AM EST

taylor swift is everything you originally thought she was. and looks like an alien.

Meg Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 10:03 AM EST

Secret Life of An American Teenager. The characters drive me nuts with their sugary-sweet personalities that I feel like I'm in a diabetic coma when I watch that show. The characters irk me, Molly Ringwald is awesome, but the dad just needs to drop off the face of the earth.

Rob Grizzly Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 10:00 AM EST

You know, I actually try to re-introduce myself to American Idol- every year. And every year, I can never make it past the second week. I blame the endless 2-hour back-to-back days of useless, annoying auditions of people being stupid just wanting to be on TV. Last year's introduction of playable instruments was a nice touch, but unfortunately, not enough because the tried and true formula of the overall show remains the same. Hopefully, this 4th Judge will spice things up, and slowly phase out the incomprehensible Paula Abdul by next year.

Vanessa Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 09:52 AM EST

I think I will give Reaper a second chance. I loved the show and then lost interest and my friend is now watching it so I thought I might try to give it another chance before season 2.
