Which TV show's fans do you secretly kinda hate? (Mine's 'Lost'...Ducking!)

Jan 14, 2009, 11:55 AM | by Mandi Bierly

Categories: 'Brothers & Sisters', 'Lost', Buffy, PopWatch Confessional, Television, Whining

Lostmystery_l Earlier this week, when I used the "I think this line's mostly filler" lyric from the Buffy the Vampire Slayer musical episode in the headline for a recap of a boring Brothers & Sisters, a quarter of the comments on the post were from fellow Buffy fans appreciating the reference. That made one reader, named Shannon, issue a smackdown: "Good grief people...get over Buffy...she is gone...the actress has apparently disappeared too....it was a good show...but good god!! get over it!! Brothers and Sisters is sooooo much better...that is if you are over the age of 18...mentally that is."

Reading that got me thinking about how Shannon obviously didn't get the show how you can appreciate a show and yet, kinda hate its fans. So 'fess up: Which TV show's fans annoy you? I trust we'll all be respectful (because on some level, you have to appreciate anyone who's as passionate about TV as you are). If I had to choose a show, it would be Lost. Before you crucify me: It's not that I dislike its fans as much as it is that I dislike the feeling that if I want to be a fan, I can't just watch an hour of quality TV; I have to start decoding Sprite commercials and go see Cloverfield. I know that intricate, never-ending web of clues is precisely the reason why so many of you love the show, but I just don't have it in me to care that much over multiple platforms.* (Also, I used to fact-check Doc Jensen's Lost features for EW and lived in fear that I would let a mistake slip through: You know you would have sent a letter, which, again, is why I respect and fear you.)

Your turn. Play nicely.

* If you think that makes me inferior to you, instead of just different, then I do dislike you. But just a bit.

I'm a big Lost fan but many fans of the show get on my nerves. It's usually a divide between the Mythology fanatics and the 'shippers. I appreciate both the character driven episodes and the mythology episodes and I can't understand why some people can't just relax and just appreciate it on a simple level - a complex action and character driven piece of entertainment. The uber-fans of the show get so wrapped up in details of shadows seen and unseen on screen, what someone said or didn't say, the fact that so-and so wore a white t-shirt in one scene and an off white t-shirt in another scene - it's gotten to the point where you'd think that people who call themselves fans of the show actually hate the show! Many Lost fans have missed the point of television in general - it's entertainment folks! That's all! They can be annoying as hell.

matthew zaktzer Thu, Mar 26, 2009 at 02:48 PM EST

Hey Matt2 you should give slumdog a chance it did win the oscar for best picture and trust me its a great movie. I hate the show lost because the people on the island always have the greatest outfits and makeup on. The producers of the show need to stop hating on other shows for stealing its ideas because most of their ideas were done already to in on way or another. Damages is the best show on televison. Lost needs to end and when it does I hope its a sopranos type ending where all of its fans are angry and they wasted all that time doing rescearch to find out what is going on in each episode.

Please deliver me from any and all reality show fans. Are they just plain stupid or did the aliens forget to remove their anal probes? And the worst..fans of Flav O flav..or koolaid or flavor aid or whatever his name is...isn't anyone going to help those poor people? Hey I know..send them to the island of LOST!!!!!!

TJ Wed, Feb 11, 2009 at 11:29 PM EST

I hate Lost so much that I started a blog (http://ihatelost.blogspot.com/) so I can get out my feelings about it. I truly can't stand the fact that I have to watch it so I can defend myself and my hatred to all of you losties. frustrated...

xxxdeadgirlsuperstarxxx Sat, Jan 31, 2009 at 08:02 PM EST

Twilight fans
Supernatural fans
Jennifer Aniston fans

Nick Tue, Jan 20, 2009 at 03:23 PM EST

Note to Non-Buffy fans - If we're STILL talking about it...it must've been amazing, aye? For the buzz to stay alive THIS LONG....come on. Give credit where credit is due.

And Shannon - Only one with insufficient taste would say BROTHERS AND SISTERS is better than Buffy. Where are you from? Kansas!?

I love EW's continuous support for Whedon, Buffy, Dollhouse, and all the like. It's great television. Then, now, and in the future. Time won't change that.

I am a huge fan of Supernatural, but I hate the fans who only talk about how hot Dean and Sam are. I will admit I don't really like new characters. I have to warm up to them. I DID like Ruby but I don't like the new actress...and the only reason Supernatural posts get so many comments is because fans are excited the show got a LITTLE promotion -_-

I don't really dislike many fans. Idol fans can get on my nerves. I enjoy the show but don't get in arguments with me just because I don't like your favorite.

Also Twilight fans, though not in general. I enjoy Twilight but I HATE the girls who only post about how hot Edward is. There's more to the series than Edward. If I hadn't read Twilight before they hype I never would have picked it up because of these girls

Russell Mon, Jan 19, 2009 at 06:43 AM EST

I really dislike Grey's Anatomy fans, but not as much as I abhor fans of The Hills. I can see those shows affecting the personalities of college girls I meet. By the way, I love watching House and Lost. Yeah yeah, I know some of you hate fans like me. House is awesome! Lost rules!

Ryan Mon, Jan 19, 2009 at 05:48 AM EST

I've been a "Smallville" fan since Season 1, and I hate the kind of fans who advocate for Clark to fly. I don't think he should fly until he embraces his destiny at the end of the series.

And those who advocated for Clark to work at the Daily Planet didn't seem to care about him finishing college first.

Ellen Mon, Jan 19, 2009 at 04:28 AM EST

On Lost fandom: I've never followed the ARGs (although the DriveShaft website from season 1 was pretty cute), and don't pay much attention to all the literary/science references on the show, beyond the brief thrill when I do spot a namecheck (like when you guess an answer on a quiz show) and all the retrospective clues are too much like hard work, but I still find the show entertaining, and not too hard to follow. In Season 4, the intertextual gags, particularly when uttered by Ben, are smart and funny, and the Scifi elements have a knowing wackiness that have allowed them not to ruin the pace of the show with long-winded exposition.

I find that if you can enjoy the references and clues you do spot, without worrying when you miss them, and check out some of the ARG sites without feeling like you have to chase down every single one, you can follow the central story and also get a kick out of some of the extras, and being a fan of the show can be a very rewarding experiences.

Ellen Mon, Jan 19, 2009 at 04:18 AM EST

I remember back in the day when I was still a bit of a fansite virgin, I went on a board for fans of Stargate. Being a self-deprecating Brit, the first comment I made was 'does anyone feel the same way about the show as me? That even though we all know it's actually a bit rubbish, some juvenile part of us still can't resist the sight of all those spaceships and explosions, and feel some strange, overwhelming affection towards all the wooden acting and half-baked scripts?'

As you can imagine, I was crucified. As they say, if your first time is bad, you never quite get over it.

Oops Sat, Jan 17, 2009 at 08:27 PM EST

Sorry, I missed the part where it said "TV Fans" when I said Twilighters annoy me. They still annoy me, and I'm not sorry about that, but I didn't realize we were supposed to keep it to TV shows.

To Mandi Sat, Jan 17, 2009 at 08:24 PM EST

I'm a big LOST fan and even I am scared of the show's fans! I LOVE reading Doc Jensen's columns and I'm intrigued by the bonus features on the DVDs, but I've never played the ARGs or visited DarkUFO (hate them), I was decades behind on watching any extra Dharma videos, I've yet to find a single Easter egg, I haven't seen any webisodes or listened to any podcasts, and I've visited its ABC site precisely once. So trust me, Mandi, there ARE normal LOST fans out there! As for fans I'm irked by, that would be the Twihards. It's not so much that they're salivating over fictional people; it's that SO many of them behave as though they've never read anything so amazing before--or ever will again. Goodness, people! The books are SO poorly written! There's TONS of better reading material out there. I'm not saying you need to go read Hemingway, but plenty of authors have done the vampire thing SO much better (They sparkle? Really?) and I can't count how many better teen romances there are. Yikes.

dave Fri, Jan 16, 2009 at 02:50 PM EST

Twilight fans: Not just because they like it, but because they think they are the greatest books ever written and the best movie ever. Some of these fans actually think Twilight should be nominated for Best Picture at The Oscars.

Lea Fri, Jan 16, 2009 at 12:08 PM EST

Supernatural Fans. I am a Supernatural fan, but good grief, fandom scares me sometimes. Other times it just pisses me off with the constant strum of mindless support, even when the show sucks. And the show can suck sometimes.

Also, Jericho fans. Get over it. It's cancelled. Wasn't that great. Move on. Ditto for Moonlight.

I don't often venture into Buffy world, but I know people who do, and they can be mildly annoying. Geeze, the show's been off for YEARS and they keep talking about it. Get a life. I don't care.

Tim G. Fri, Jan 16, 2009 at 12:29 AM EST

Supernatural fans. Ugh, they drive me CRAZY. Two attractive guys plus a lame Buffy/X-Files rip-off storyline doesn't make a good show! 2nd place would be a tie between Moonlight & Jerico fans.

Ally Thu, Jan 15, 2009 at 10:33 PM EST

Aaron Sorkin! Well, his fans - anyone who tried to convince me to watch Stuio 60. But mostly just Aaron Sorkin. Who is, after all, his biggest fan.

Dirty Dan Thu, Jan 15, 2009 at 04:28 PM EST

Lost fans. Over on TheTailSection, there's one fan called DeGroots who actively tries to cause trouble by attacking other posters on the site. Meanwhile, BuddyTV (who owns TheTailSection) does nothing about it. It's annoying, and it makes me want to turn away from fandom.

Raven_Moon Thu, Jan 15, 2009 at 04:22 PM EST

The Bachelor, The Hills, horrible "reality" trash such as that.

Megan Thu, Jan 15, 2009 at 01:43 PM EST

And yeah also twilight fans who shouts "best book ever" "best movie ever". They are really annoying.

Megan Thu, Jan 15, 2009 at 01:41 PM EST

I definitely hate Lost fans. Especially character fans and shipper fangirls. Mythology geeks are not that bad but my god I'm a female but I really hate girl craziness over hot characters. They're like mean high school girls.

JD Thu, Jan 15, 2009 at 01:04 PM EST

People who worship at the Cult Of Joss Whedon are the absolute worst. They seem to come from the same genetic stock as the people who go to the Rocky Horror Picture Show every weekend and think that being loud and geeky is the same as being "cool". I love Buffy and Angel & Firefly but the hardcore fans of those shows are overbearing at best.

Lindsey Thu, Jan 15, 2009 at 11:43 AM EST

I always love an underdog so I don't have it in me to hate fans of any of the "cult" show people are talking about (like firefly and supernatural)....but I can't stand fans of generically popular, banal shows like Two and a Half men or Grey's Anatomy who look at you like you have leprosy when you express an interest in Battlestar Galactica or Mad Men.

Vineet Thu, Jan 15, 2009 at 10:03 AM EST

I guess I hate the fans of anything in general who always make it a pissing contest or make it out to be the end of creation, but sound so stupid.

Antonio Thu, Jan 15, 2009 at 09:53 AM EST

Supernatural fans! Man, those girls are crazy! They think the show and those two boys are perfect, they don't like any female character and they're into something called Wincest. I like the show, I think it's entertaining and it's actually good, but it's not the best thing in the universe! And telling people that the reason to watch the show is because those guys are Hot is ridiculous!

preshea Thu, Jan 15, 2009 at 09:28 AM EST

Browncoats. I was never so happy when a movie ("Serenity") bombed. After two years of being deafened by their hysteria, they *finally* shut up.

Jane Thu, Jan 15, 2009 at 09:27 AM EST

A large portion of Gossip Girl fans disturbs me. The love (and lust) for Chuck Bass is just gross. This character tried to rape two different girls in the first episode. He has never shown any remorse. In every episode he treats women like trash. Fangirls defend his behavior and frankly, it is sickening! Especially when I think of how young some of these girls are and that they are still developing their knowledge of relationships between men and women. The actor isn't even that talented.

Lynne Thu, Jan 15, 2009 at 09:08 AM EST

Oh, I agree on the Supernatural fans hate for any woman under 30 on the show. First they whine and when the actress is written off and a new one is hired, they cry for the loss of the old one.

The sad thing is that the producers seem to be breaking their backs to feed those rabid fans. I simply had to stop watching last season because it got too bad and fanficcy in order to please the wailing fans.

Analia Thu, Jan 15, 2009 at 09:03 AM EST

I'm a fan of LOST, I wasn't from the beginning, was able to get the first two seasons from Netflix and was caught up by Season 3. Aside from all of the mystery and never-ending questions, it's really a character-driven show, where you respond to the individuals and their actions in out-of-this world circumstances. The same goes for any show that has fans, there's no need to criticize anyone else for liking what they like, we thankfully live in a country where we have so many options for just about anything. Many posters have stated, if you don't like show, don't watch it and that's final. If you enjoyed it once, buy the entire series and keep enjoying.

t3hdow Thu, Jan 15, 2009 at 06:00 AM EST

To Cario Gold:
Add American Idol/Dancing With the Stars devotees and sports viewers and that covers just about everybody.
Seriously though, you need to be more open minded. I'm not Star Trek fan but admit it discusses some cool stuff, and the trailer for the new film looks nice, even for casual sci-fi fans.
Harry Potter connects with all people of all ages, so to say its readers should grow up is pretty petty. Besides, with that and even Twilight, I won't dis any novel that encourages people to read more (even if Twilight's overrated).
As for anime, you can skip series like Sailor Moon, Dragonball Z and Pokemon, Naruto and Bleach and I won't say anything, but there's some cool stuff you're missing out on, like Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Fullmetal Alchemist, Evangelion and Robotech. Check out Miyazaki films too. I dare you to watch Grave of the Fireflies without breaking out in tears. Don't dismiss the entire genre from a few fanatical fans or call us basement dwellers for appreciating it.

Morjana Thu, Jan 15, 2009 at 04:42 AM EST

Anti-fans of any show -- yet who remain on specific series forums just to complain (over and over and over)... move on to watching something you like, please!

Movie_Dearest Thu, Jan 15, 2009 at 03:06 AM EST

"Arrested Development" ... hated that show and yet now there's going to be a movie. Ick.

Ragna Thu, Jan 15, 2009 at 02:33 AM EST

I'm heavily active in many fandoms as a fic writer (Jossverse, CSIverse, Supernatural, a few other random shows here and there) but I hope I'm not one of those people who goes MY SHOW IS THE BEST YOU MUST WATCH! It doesn't matter what particular show you're a fan of, if you're one of those type of fans then you scare me and will most likely make me think badly of your fandom.

alex Thu, Jan 15, 2009 at 01:22 AM EST

Anyone grouping Twilight and Harry Potter together here must be crazy. Twilight sucks and so do its fans. It wasn't even a very well made movie. It's just a soap opera with vampires. Harry Potter actually has merit. There's so much more depth to it. It's much more creative and imaginative than Twilight and actually has good acting in it. I've enjoyed the movies, but I'm not some hardcore fan; I've only read 3 of the books. I'm not trying to force anyone to like Harry Potter, but please don't group it with something like Twilight with its Team Jacob and Team Edward ridiculousness. And Harry Potter is not just for kids.

Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 11:53 PM EST

THANK YOU!! I love Lost, but I watch it like it's, ya know, a tv show, not like it's the key to the universe and all of its secrets... and I'm ok with that.

Andy G. Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 11:40 PM EST

I get annoyed by fans who watch TV shows because they think the lead is hot or they are simply there to look for clues for their shipping preference. I get annoyed over how superficial these fans can be, when the creators of the show are often working hard to make the show go much deeper than a series of hook-ups or slow motion shots of the lead in a swimsuit. Look beneath the surface, people!

matt2 Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 11:39 PM EST

Why waste energy disliking fans of a show or movie I'll never see? If there's a tv program that I dislike for one reason or another, I don't watch it. With movies, the trailer either appeals to me or not. I know I will never see Twilight, or a SAW movie, or Slumdog Millionaire, no matter how much their fans hype them, but I also won't go after their fans for liking them either. On tv I'm not interested in American Idol or '24' this season and I don't visit their pop watches to ridicule their ardent devotees. To each his own. It takes an asinine jerk or someone with hidden motivation to unjustly bad mouth a tv show and/or its fans every single week. There has to be an intense level of insecurity for someone to feel obligated to do such things. Why comment weekly in a "pop watch" session on a program you dislike? One, if you think you are persuading the real fans of a show not to watch it, you're delusional. Two, foolish rants only serve to call your behavior into question.

Lanie Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 11:26 PM EST

Fans who try to force you to agree that their fav show is the best show ever in the history of television - Arrested Development, Heroes, Firefly, Moonlight and Veronica Mars fans actually turn people off the show because they are so annoying. Suprisingly, Twilight fans don't bother me. They are just so nuts it is actually entertaining.

xXx Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 08:56 PM EST

Whedonites, all reality shows fans.

mikey Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 08:55 PM EST

So much Haterade, so little space.

AI fans who act as if who gets voted off each week or who wins is of tremendous importance. Those that act as if they'll owe some form of personal obligation to the winner or it's the gravest of injustices that bubbleheaded warbler A got sent home before bubbleheaded warbler B.
---
Lost fans who say "you're only defending your lame-ass show because you wish it was as good as Lost" (see multiple comments below).
---
Family Guy fans who insist something actually funny has ever happened on that show (actually I just pity them in their delusion).
---
Sex and the City fans who revere the characters on the show as role models and valid female archetypes: "What type of girl are you looking for: a Carrie, Charlotte, Miranda, or Samantha?"
---
Dane Cook fans, there must be some out there or else he wouldn't keep showing up in movies and on TV.

Disgruntled Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 08:24 PM EST

Dislike certain fandoms because of overzealous fans championing their show as the end all and be all? Easy fix. Just have that person choose a few episodes that encapsulates the series to prove their argument. If the show really is as great as that person claims then it shouldn't be much of a challenge.

That's what I've always done with my friends. They don't get my Buffy love so I show them-with permission, no kidnapping needed-essential episodes (Welcome to the Hellmouth/The Harvest, Surprise/Innocence, Hush, The Body, Once More With Feeling, and a funny episode like Something Blue for a giggle) to get them hooked. At least 95% of them have come 'round to my way of thinking!

elr Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 08:19 PM EST

Seinfeld fans! I'm sorry I just don't get the love for that show. And I have seen a couple of episodes. It probably all stems from the fact that I am not a big fan of Jerry Seinfeld.

Kelly Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 08:07 PM EST

Twilight fans have to some of the worst. The books are G rated derivatives of better vampire fiction (early Anita Blake, Sookie Stackhouse) to name a few, not to mention Buffy. A good portion of the books read like bad fan fiction, and it's absurb how the die hards think it's such good writing.

As for TV, I'm a fan of Veronica Mars and most of Joss Whedon's work excluding the wildly overrated Firefly/Serenity, but some of the fans are just too devoted. Friday Night Lights's fans are irritating through their insistence that the show is so real and "you just have to watch it". I do find Heroes overrated and the bandwagon jumping after the past two seasons quite amusing.

Jessica Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 07:55 PM EST

Proud Whedonite here! I've never understood Seinfeld/Sopranos/Entourage fans. Not so much a dislike of the fans in general but for those that think you're unintelligent for not liking their precious series. I think that Seinfeld is the least funny comedy to grace tv screens, The Sopranos is a horribly acted soap opera, and Entourage is cheesy...at best.

That being said, as I was reading comments about Whedon fans being the ones that are disliked, I wanted to punch a baby. With acting that brilliant, writing so heartfelt, and plots so engaging, I find it hard to believe that some people don't worship at the alter of Joss. But it's all a matter of opinion.

So maybe we should all learn tolerance?

Nix Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 07:53 PM EST

There's such a thing as a Google alert? That explains all the commentbombing that happens!

It's not a particular show's fans, but here's something I only now just realized: there is a large portion in any fandom that is devoted to a show (or other ongoing series) that is defined by its hatred for either the lead character, or the star, of the show they're so devoted to. I'm flabbergasted and begin to feel all deconstructivy.

Without Question Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 07:39 PM EST

Smallville fans. Or to be more precise, that particular subset of them that believes Chloe Sullivan will be revealed as the 'true' Lois Lane in, like, the series finale. They're incredibly condescending towards anyone who doesn't share their belief and they act like everyone who doesn't believe in Chlois theory is an idiot watching the show incorrectly. They've entirely turned me off the fandom, especially because of the way they completely took over the Smallville forums at Television Without Pity. You'd never know that was supposed to be a site for general Smallville discussion based on the way the 'Chlois' theory people shout down, insult and freeze out anyone who doesn't agree that Chloe = Lois. With fans like that, what show even needs haters? Those fans are enough to make anyone run in the other direction.

jaime Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 07:00 PM EST

THIS IS TO FUNNY....

I seriously dont understand fans of any cop/detective/lawyer/crime drama. I just dont all the CSI's and um basiclly all of CBS...lol!

Meredith44 Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 06:56 PM EST

I cannot pick a specific show's fans, but in general it is the fans that think their show is the greatest thing ever and won't shut up about it, even in forums that have nothing to do with it. (So, I, like Shannon, would have been irked at the Buffy take over of the Brothers and Sisters recap.)
I adore television and love certain shows beyond any reasonable measure (currently BSG, Burn Notice, and Lost are tops for me), but some fans' devotion (especially to mediocre shows, but also to shows that I agree are good) is a bit off-putting.
There are certain shows that I kept/keep hearing about over and over such that I start to resent the shows. A lot. In fact, there are shows that I haven't watched/won't watch (e.g. Dollhouse) or that took me awhile to finally watch (e.g. Angel) because their fans are so "holier-than-thou" that it irks me to no end.

1234567890 Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 06:38 PM EST

I enjoy watching Supernatural but the fans are probably the most fanatical of any show. They spend thousands of dollars chasing Jensen and Jared around the country going from convention to convention to see these guys in person. As for the comment about the Popwatch section getting filled up by these fans its because they have them in their Google alerter. If they could figure out a way to put an ankle band monitor on these two guys they would probably do it.

JG Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 06:38 PM EST

I dislike any fan who talks trash about other fans; no matter what the show is.

MadMenGal Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 06:26 PM EST

Speaking as a rabid fan of Mad Men, to those of you bashing me:
Just because you criticize me because you don't have an appreciation for intelligently written shows, doesn't really reflect badly on me. Can't say the same for you.

Brian_izzle Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 06:21 PM EST

Love: Supernatural(fans not included) Lost , Chuck , HP , Smallville , Ghost Hunters , Bones , NCIS ,Two and a Half Men , old shool pick is Buffy and Friends

Hate: anything on MTV, All reality T.V. shows , Pushing Daisy (its not that great in my personal opinion) Grey's Anatomy , ER ,Law & Order , Heroes , VH1 , and most of all Twilight fans!!! ugh so out of control ...Never compare them to Buffy !

Amanda Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 06:19 PM EST

As a 'Buffy' fan but not a fan of 'Firefly' and 'Serenity' I have come across some particularly unpleasant Joss Whedon fans who think they are intellectual superiority to the rest of us. They almost seem to want 'Dollhouse' to get cancelled so they can complain that everyone else was too stupid to understand the genius of Whedon. I have also come across some great Joss Whedon fans. I just wish the nasty ones didn't bug me so much.

Luisa Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 06:16 PM EST

I don't hate Lost fans. I am a Lost fan. However, my devotion has dwindled from spending my Thursdays (back when it aired on Wednesday nights, that is) in a haze of island mystery, to watching it when it comes on and ... yeah, that's it. I do love getting into a show, scouring the net for spoilers and casting updates and all that good stuff, but the level of dedication that some Lost fans have for it--just like you said Mandi, the whole decoding a Sprite commercial or reading a tie-in book, it kinda wears me out. So, yeah. I mean, I LOVED "The Constant". But other than that...it's an entertaining hour of TV, but I'm not willing to spend the rest of the week finding out what it all means or whatever.

Kate Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 06:03 PM EST

It's entirely possible to enjoy Lost without analyzing every little detail for clues. I skip over all Jeff Jensen's deep thoughts on the show and move ahead to the recap.

Bethann Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 06:01 PM EST

I'm with ChristopherB as a "Battlestar Galactica" fan-hater. I just don't get it at all. That and all the "American Idol" fans out there--as a trained singer, that show just makes me cringe.

HotBoxMC Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 05:55 PM EST

I think I dislike TV fans who HATE on shows or fans in general. I watch almost everything, I'm a fan of almost everything - from LOST to America's Next Top Model to How I Met Your Mother to Ugly Betty to Law & Order: SVU to Idol to 30 Rock, plus about 25 others. TV is for entertainment. Don't tell me my show is crap. Can't you just let me enjoy it? And if you hate the fans b/c you hate the show...that wasn't really the question.

Ethan Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 05:55 PM EST

Buffy, Angel, Firefly and hopefully Dollhouse are my favorite shows of all time, so yes, I am a Whedon fan. But I do admit that SOME fans are just too insane, especially the constant attacks on people who don't like or have never seen one of his shows. It makes me embarrassed to be a fan sometimes. There is a lot good that comes from his fandom though.
On topic, I gotta go with everyone that watches The Hills, which include many of my friends. I just stare at them in disbelief.

Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 05:54 PM EST

Fans of: Friday Night Lights (this includes the obnoxious gushing by TV critics), Pushing Daisies and 30 Rock. I'm sick of being told that I MUST watch and LOVE something I've decided on my own I don't like.

ChristopherB Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 05:34 PM EST

BATTLESTAR GALACTICA Fans, I am so sick of being told how it's the best show on TV or the Best Science Fiction in the past 25 years ever, EW is guilty of this. The show is just not the good, it's mythology does not hold up from season to season, and it is usually not a lot of fun to watch people scream at each other week after week.

Dayve Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 05:04 PM EST

I don't hate any fans. People got different likes & dislikes. That's cool. I really love Lost and The Office. Can't stand Two and a half men, Bachelor or Bachelorette (whatever).

Chris Kw. Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 05:02 PM EST

Supernatural fans. Fan girls more specifically. Every time there is a story about a CW show (usually Gossip Girl) they always complain about the lack of love for Supernatural. I watch and enjoy the show. But I am not delusional in thinking that it is some great piece of art. A lot of the things I've seen on the show I've seen before. Namely from The X-Files and Buffy.

Miranda Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 04:56 PM EST

I don't hate any type of fan (well except maybe really, really rabid Twilight fans). Sure, I love Buffy, Angel, VM, Gilmore Girls, Doctor Who, BSG, Wonderfalls, Pushing Daisies, Mad Men, Firefly, Grey's Anatomy, Gossip Girl, Dexter....but I am never going to call someone an idiot for not appreciating any of those shows. I mean...isn't it enough that I like them? The world would be an awfully boring place if we all liked The Sopranos, The Wire, Supernatural, Smallville, etc.

ebe Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 04:51 PM EST

Please do not associate Twilight and Buffy. Hate on me for loving Buffy, but do not hate on the show. Twilight has not an ounce of the prose Buffy had.

To DJ Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 04:48 PM EST

Whoops -- meant to address that to DJ, not TJ.

Just Chill Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 04:48 PM EST

I am a huge Lost fan, and I will admit to pausing the show when I am watching it if my husband comes to talk to me. I also love the Twilight series (yes off topic, but people have addressed this below) But really - do you have to bash people because they like the show/book? I love reading the recaps of Lost that are posted on EW, but on the other hand, I will admit to thinking it is taking things a little to far by wearing a Team Jacob T-Shirt to collect the last book of the Twilight series.. HOWEVER, am I going to make fun of them?? NO. How is "hating" fans of a show or book for that matter, going to change things?? Are you going to try to convince those people that the show they like sucks?? Just because you can't understand it or don't like it - doesn't mean everyone has to follow your opinion. On the other hand.. FANS of anything - you also do have to FORCE your likes on to those who just are not interested. There - topic covered. JUST CHILL PEOPLE!

conqueror Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 04:48 PM EST

i LOATHE "the hills", i've seen half an episode and for the life of me i can't understand why people tune into it. the entire "cast" is vapid, and stupid. and the bachelor, ugh, enough said

Cario Gold Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 04:40 PM EST

So many shows, so little time:

House: Wilson and House ARE NOT an item! AND THEY NEVER WILL BE!

Heroes: Honestly, who watches the show anymore?

Supernatural: Rabid fan girls drove me away.

Moonlight: I can't help but laugh at the fans who gave some woman thousands of dollars. She took the money and disappeared.

Torchwood: horrible acting, horrible accents, horrible stories.

Star Trek: It's time to move out of your parents basement and GET A LIFE!

Firefly: the show was crap and so was the movie

Anime: I have no respect for you if watch Anime.

Twilight and Harry Potter fans: Grow up for God sakes!

Lark3 Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 04:39 PM EST

Its not that I hate the fans per se...but the fact that they keep such crap as AI, Grey's, Survivor, DH and other shows on the air while other quality shows keep getting cancelled.

troy Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 04:35 PM EST

Family Guy fans, especially those who can't say how great it is without also bagging on the Simpsons in the same breath. And for what? Take out all the pop-culture references and non-sequiturs about how "this is worse than the time..." and what do you have? An episode of American Dad. Oh Goody. D'oh trumps Giggidy Giggidy any day of the week!

BriGuy Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 04:32 PM EST

Sex & the City, end of discussion.

Trash paraded as empowerment is still trash!

I had the luxury (read: 'luck') of only seeing a handful of these episodes and from the utterly 1-dimensional (not to mention stereotypical & annoying!) characters to mind-numbingly dull content devoid of any real context, the entire thing played like a tacky commercial for what was presumed to be the ultimate benchmark of urban chic.

While the underlying theme of the show may be that sex isn't a big deal and can be discussed in a frank and open manner, it's pretty hypocritical to then make sex a predominant topic of discussion/depiction. Can we say 'over-compensating'???

And no, I'm not a prude. There's just something to be said for modesty and fyi, girls; it's not at all flattering leaving nothing left to wonder no matter how 'sophisticated' you think it makes you.

Order your cosmopolitan, tote your Coach purse, and keep the catty locker room talk (which, btw, is more-so a female trait) to a minimum

chelle Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 04:27 PM EST

Last I checked, most people watch sports, get this, ON TV. So thanks PhillysIGGLES, you illustrated my point quite well.

anon Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 04:23 PM EST

Survivor. Especially when people start analyzing every little thing to figure out who's going to win. And Real World or Road Warriors or any combination--these three shows are so old and pointless. Everyone knows what to expect that it isn't even a surprise.

AL Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 04:20 PM EST

Fans of any show who can't tell the difference between reality and fantasy, between the actor and the character.

But really, tv as a whole is lame. *if my father were dead he'd be turning in his grave that I of all people would say that* There's nothing good on anymore and TPTB usually kill it anyway.

Let's not generalize too much, people. Not ALL fans of a specific show are crazy. My sister loves Supernatural but I've never heard her complain about the chicks they bring on. In fact she liked most of them - not as much as the guys but she still liked them - and wished they could have stayed as well.

Also, you shouldn't hate someone for liking a specific show. Maybe you don't like how they act about it, but just because they have different tastes then you? That's a little immature.

PS: I hate LOST.

Alichat Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 04:19 PM EST

Uhh...DS9Sisko....it's JOSS Whedon, not Josh. If you're going to insult us, at least get his damn name right.

Anti- Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 04:18 PM EST

I am anti-Taylor Swift. The girl cannot sing and I loathe the fans who go around quoting Love Story every iota of the day. I actually heard that dang song the first time on SNL 1/10 and which I hadn't.

I also loathe the fans of any MTV show. The Hills...The City...Bromance. Seriously? Do you really need an extra hour to discuss Justin Bobby's blank stare and LC's drama with the evil and fame-whoring Speidi.

LoveMeSomeTV Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 04:17 PM EST

Dating myself here. But back in the day, girls who loved Vincent from "Beauty and the Beast" were the biggest losers. I guess that would be Buffy/Twilight fans now?

Ace Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 04:15 PM EST

Most hated: Dancing with the Stars. That show is ridiculous.

But for real show...I just do not get why people love 24 so much. It is like a soap opera in that it repeats so much of itself and every second is cliff hanger w/out any real character development. NO thanks.

Jul Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 04:10 PM EST

I do not like Grey's Anatomy fans. All this "Mer-Der" stuff is annoying and so seem to think the actors. Why else should they be quitting?

Jp Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 04:10 PM EST

I noticed the name of your B&S column, and like many others, I thought about "Once More... With Feeling" fondly. I appreciate any Buffy shout-out, as it is still one of the best made TV shows ever. I don't give much thought to shows and fans that bother me. I just ignore them because I firmly believe that the internet makes people crazy. There is no need to fan that fire...

Los Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 04:09 PM EST

They're not around anymore, but I always shuddered around fans of 90210 (the old one not the new one- but guess those fans would annoy me as well).

Steven Hendricks Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 04:08 PM EST

The Moonlight fans serve no purpose but to annoy everyone .To them I say buy the DVD set and leave
the rest of us alone.

t3hdow Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 04:08 PM EST

As for sports fans, I used to hate them as well, but lately, I can understand their almost religious devotion between the teams they support. I credit my job, which most of them talk sports, and I gained a new appreciation for it, even when I'm still not so crazy about it (at least not to start riots). But when I'm still livid over how the Titans lost this past weekend, I know I caught the fever.

So. It's OK for Mandi to dislike Lost Fans, but not OK for Lost Fans to dislike Mandi? Subscription cancelled. Website removed from bookmark. I'm done.

Jeff Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 04:06 PM EST

Ok, this isn't a tv show, but it still fits in the rabid-fan category. I CAN NOT STAND DAVE MATTHEWS BAND. His voice irritates me to no end and there is not one song by that band that I enjoy. However, I do not dare mention this to people I don't know, because Dave Matthews fans are famous for giving you the look of death when you hate on their savior.

izikavazo Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 04:05 PM EST

As a Lost fan I can understand the dislike for us.
THe people I don't like are the American Idol fans and the House fans, they're just so limited in perspective.

Kelly Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 04:03 PM EST

Annoying fans (not all of them are annoying, but I just don't get their obsession): Moonlight, Mad Men, and The Office jump out at me in particular. Oh and Pushing Daisies. Really?

t3hdow Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 03:58 PM EST

But if it's any group of fans I spite the most lately, it's the ultra elitist, ultra hardcore Star Wars fans. I remember when EW popwatch discussed the Clone Wars movie, and it exploded between the uber diehard fans and everyone else. God, I've never argued with such delusional zealots in my life like them. Despite explaining that I loved the original trilogy, enjoyed Revenge of the Sith (and bits of the other prequels) and played numerous Star Wars videogames from the SNES Super Star Wars games to Gamecube's Rogue Squadron 2/3 to Xbox's Knights of the Old Republic, they deemed me as some jobless, snobbish loser, living in a basement; simply because I thought Clone Wars didn't look that great (and judging from the episodes from Cartoon Network, it isn't...Gendy Tartovosky's version was worlds better). God, I get a headache thinking about them.

Farva Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 03:58 PM EST

The fans of "Grey's Anatomy" can get on my nerves. And, I know this doesn't count, but "Twilight" fans bug the daylights out of me!

Cate Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 03:58 PM EST

I'm a LOST fan and sometimes even I have to stop it with the podcasts and TiVo-ing episodes on the Sci Fi channel.

I have to admit The Hills fans are an enigma - why is it that they need an after show discussion?

Jillian Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 03:51 PM EST

I cannot stand the Moonlight fans. Come on, people. There is a reason the show was CANCELLED! Get over it and move on please.

t3hdow Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 03:51 PM EST

I kind of loathe diehard Hereos fans; particularly in season 1 when they dumped on both Lost and 24, which I enjoy. Okay, I'll contest 24 that year was awful, but those Heroes devotees sounded like hardcore bandwagon jumpers. Unsurprisingly, many of them jumped ship after season 2 or still defend Heroes to the death, despite its flaws. I have nothing against Heroes itself, but it's far from the end all, be all sci-fi show.
I can understand why Lost receives the hate from the more fanatical fans. I'm not so judgmental, since it's not for everyone, and I'm okay with that. Also, some of them are ultra picky about every nuanced detail about the show and that gets on my nerves. Also, when Ken Tucker explained his more streamlined viewing, some of them attacked him for that and because he's impartial to Sun and Jin, as opposed to hating Nikki and Paulo. For such an open minded group of people, some of them can be astoundingly myopic and stubborn.

Ellen Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 03:47 PM EST

Ophra Fans! The cool-aid runs through their veins. Life Coach? Really?

Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 03:46 PM EST

Oh, and I really really HATE Xena's subbers, they get me sick

Matt Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 03:46 PM EST

I don't like any fan of any show that can't talk to me about that show without taking a dump on some other show. Like the Lost fans who rip on Heroes or South Park fans who rip on Family Guy. Naturally, the inverse also applies.

I mean, if you want to talk to me about a show we both enjoy then that's cool but I don't care about what you DON'T like, you know? Even if I don't like it either, subjective opinions do not translate into objective fact and people who carry on as if they do, professionally or otherwise, suck. May it hurt each time they poop.

Peter B Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 03:45 PM EST

Awww, Mandi. **hug**

Dana Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 03:43 PM EST

Firefly and Buffy fans, Trekkies.

Molly Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 03:42 PM EST

I'm into a million different sci-fi shows (well, maybe a few less...), and the hardcore fans of each of those shows really annoy me/frighten me. They just get too absorbed by the show and start arguing with other fans over the silliest little details. They treat people with opposing opinions like they're too dumb to even be watching the show in the first place. Also, I don't like 'shippers. It's perfectly fine if you want two characters on a TV show to get involved romantically, but please, don't post about it every five minutes, don't talk nonstop about it, don't cry if it doesn't happen, and don't get so nuts that you start acting like the two characters are your personal friends and not just works of fiction.

Jessica Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 03:38 PM EST

Haha, I totally understand where you're coming from about Lost. I have friends who want to watch, but won't because they haven't seen any of the other seasons and they don't understand it. But here's the thing--I have seen all the seasons, and I don't understand it, nor do I remember even half of what I should! It's still entertaining, and we have people like Doc Jensen to do all the legwork and tell me what I need to know :)

I have to say that 24's and Dancing with the Stars' fans kind of get on my nerves, only because they are convinced that EVERYONE should watch them, and if you don't you're an idiot!
