People's Choice Awards: You showed up? Here's a trophy!

Jan 8, 2009, 09:30 AM | by Whitney Pastorek

Categories: About Last Night, Television, Things That Make Me Die Inside

Queenlatifahawards_l This is not the blog post my editors asked for. In this space, you are supposed to be reading a Best and Worst of last night's People's Choice Awards, one of those snarky little fiestas where I run down all the highlights of the ceremony, crack some jokes, get worked up when Sugarland doesn't win, whatever. But PopWatchers, I can't do it this time.

I know what you're thinking: "Yeah, it's hard to make a list of 'bests' when there weren't any." But even if I faked it by saluting Christina Applegate's classy speech or the emotional fortitude it must take for Ellen DeGeneres to keep getting up there and smiling at the nice people who cheer for her when she dances her funny dance but refuse to give her the civil rights necessary to marry her "roommate," I would be doing you, the intelligent and savvy readers of EW.com, a disservice. Because the People's Choice Awards, by any reasonable standard, are the worst kind of pandering, artificial hooey. And we, the alleged people, deserve better.

I intend no disrespect to the winners of the "awards," nor to enthusiastic hostess Queen Latifah (pictured), nor to the hardworking men and women who labored behind the scenes to produce these two hours of televised pap and circumstance. But with the exception of The Dark Knight -- victorious in so many categories they had to shove them all into a montage at the end -- do I think for a second that these "winners" are, indeed, the "people's" choice? No. Let's be honest: As the very clear post-show disclaimer explained, a complex system of "E-Polls" and market research and extravagant math went into choosing the nominees you saw upon your screen. And that system led to a telecast in which praise was lavished on a crassly commercial cross-section of demographically advantageous properties starring celebrities who were willing to show up.

Even as mindless distraction, this awards show was a failure. There was no suspense; every category could be easily predicted by remembering who you'd already spotted in the audience. Would the "Favorite Rock Song" be "All Summer Long" by Kid Rock, or those other two thingies performed by people who were not currently located inside the Shrine Auditorium? To quote "winner" Rock: What a surprise. Chris Brown accepted his "Favorite Combined Forces" award (for "No Air" with Jordin Sparks) "live via satellite" from Dublin, Ireland -- where by my calculations it would have been approximately 3:30 in the morning. Rascal Flatts were handed a statue immediately after completing their unconvincing Rascal Flatts impersonation, and like 200 people rose as one from the good seats to collect the "Favorite TV Drama" award for House. Yes, tipping the winners off ahead of time has become pretty much de rigeur at this sort of thing, but when those "winners" stretch the limits of plausibility or common sense, I start sawing at my wrists with Twizzlers.

Examples: We were told early in the broadcast that voting was still open in the "Favorite New TV Comedy/Drama" categories. And yet when the time came, the casts of Gary Unmarried and The Mentalist -- which, oh wow, just happen to air on the network we're watching! -- were in the house and ready to go. The cast members of the losing shows? Conspicuously absent. (Okay, there were 90210 people milling about, but I'm willing to believe they, like Paris Hilton, have nothing better to do.) But wait, there's more: Britney Spears losing to Robin Williams for "Favorite Scene Stealing Guest Star" -- in an Internet-based voting competition? Kate Hudson (movie to promote) and Latifah (host) going head-to-head for "Favorite Leading Lady"? The Secret Life of Bees winning "Favorite Movie Drama"?? People. Bees made $37 million at the box office. That is just slightly more money than Marley and Me made opening weekend.

So what now? How to contend against the kinds of dark forces that would put Jewel outside the Shrine for the express purpose of pretending to randomly give out a CVS Pharmacy-sponsored makeover to some woman, then cut to a pre-taped segment featuring said woman's makeover? Or somehow cajole my beloved Chandra Wilson into shilling for Downy fabric softener? PopWatchers, aside from saying "don't watch the damn thing," I am at a loss. For I know I am powerless, that the People's Choice Awards are bigger than me, or you, or even Christian Bale, whose aggressive gravitas had absolutely no effect on the woooooo!-ing hordes in the balcony, desperate just to hear themselves scream.

The only thing I can hope for is this: When people like Kid Rock and Adam Sandler take to the microphone and crow ever so humbly about how their work is not "for the critics," but "for the people," all of us will take a second to remember that there is nothing wrong with a people who are also critical. Whether we use our mouses, our remotes, our blogs, or our hard-earned cash, it is up to us to decide what kind of culture we want to live in. And while it may be easy and indeed quite fun to stand in a metaphorical mosh pit and high-five every shiny famous person who comes down the pike, I happen to believe we as a people are capable of ever so much more. (Need proof? The Dark Knight.) To echo last night's oft-repeated phrase, Yes we can demand excellence. Yes we can think analytically, write articulately, and speak passionately about art and artists in our society. I go so far as to say it is our responsibility. We cannot let crap like this win.

Did you watch last night? Agree/disagree? And even if you skipped the show, who or what would be your personal choice for the very best pop culture has to offer?

I LOVED American Beauty!! One of the best movies by far. You guys should check out www.notable.tv it's a new site launching soon covering similar celeb content like this. I heard there was a pre launch sign up right now. You guys should check it out.

Maggie Mon, Jan 12, 2009 at 01:13 AM EST

SAM:

OMG! Someone posted: "The English Patient" and "American Beauty" were great. ARE YOU NUTS! Those were two of the worst movies ever made and anyone who thinks they were great should be locked up and the key thrown away. You apparently didn't understand them.

Gloria C Sun, Jan 11, 2009 at 11:21 PM EST

Sam, you are so wrong! American Beauty was pretentious and dull, and Annette Benning's performance was like fingernails on a chalkboard. The English Patient was only good when Juliette Binoche was onscreen. But like the great Elaine Benes, I was thinking 'die already' while watching the rest.

I understood both movies, and thought both were awful. You are free to disagree. But I am entitled to my opinion too. Those of us who didn't like those movies don't need to be locked up and have the key thown away, just because we disagree with you. You are not the movie police.

YEAH! Slumdog Millionaire won at the Golden Globes! And 2 Globes for Kate Winslet! AWESOME!

Sun, Jan 11, 2009 at 10:26 PM EST

Didn't know that the show was even on, but saw a clip on youtube because Ellen was on it. Love Ellen. Honestly, I would be a screaming nutcase for Ellen if I were there too, but I wouldn't rudely interupt her speech though. That bit was a little annoying.

Sam Sun, Jan 11, 2009 at 06:18 AM EST

OMG! Someone posted: "The English Patient" and "American Beauty" were awful.

Morgan Sun, Jan 11, 2009 at 12:59 AM EST

I would agree that viewership is what drives the "People's" Choice Awards, but even that isn't truly the case when a show that gets over 18 million viewers a week like NCIS gets left out. Even if you don't like the show, a viewpoint I whole-heartedly disagree with, you have to admit that including it would be a reflection of the will of the people. It sucks that the best shows don't always get the best ratings, but that's what peer and critic award shows are for.

The whole thing was just the Kids' Choice Awards with more adult themes. Both shows are equally contrived and full of screaming fans. In fact, I'd almost rather watch the KCAs. At least they slime people.

As for the comment of the B+ essay writer, I, as an A+ college essay writer, would like to inform you that the word you meant to use was "libel" not "slander" and you cannot commit slander or libel by stating a negative opinion when all of the facts in the article are correct.

elljay Sat, Jan 10, 2009 at 11:23 PM EST

I taped it and watched it last night. What was I thinking? It was just horrible and embarrassing. Queen Latifah's exaggerated ebullience served to heighten the artificiality. If we assume that most actors are above average in intelligence, and I think they are, can you imagine how much they did not want to be there? Many of them seemed particularly uncomfortable by the catcalls, specifically Marisa Tomei. So why did I watch this horrible spectacle? I did fast forward through some of the more uncomfortable moments, but all-in-all, I was just stunned. I don't think I need to ever watch it again to validate that this show a waste of time. Thanks for expressing your displeasure with this broadcast so articulately.

Phil Sat, Jan 10, 2009 at 06:34 PM EST

I don't think it's so much a problem of good film and television as it is a problem of the taste of the masses. I have no idea who won what at the people's choice awards, but I do know that poopycock like Criminal Minds, NCIS and the crap that is currently Heroes get more viewers than shows like Pushing Daisies, Bones and Lost. And I do know that 10,000 BC, Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed and 27 Dresses grossed more and averaged better per screen than movies like In Bruges, Encounters at the End of the World, and Synecdoche, New York.
The problem is not the industry, which generally makes what the masses want. The problem is the standards of the commonality. As long as people actually demand the kind of crap that is showcased at PCA, there's nothing that can be done. We're doomed to the philistine tastes of the collective mind.
Thankfully, IQ is actually rising, however glacial the pace may seem. Maybe in 500 years, if we're still around, the cultural standards will be greater.

Vicki Sat, Jan 10, 2009 at 06:15 PM EST

The People's Choice is the vote of the people with the 3 choices given to vote on. Why do some critically bombed shows make it big in the box office? People do have a say. The stars showed up for it was the fans who voted otherwise, they wouldn't give a flying fig. Why in the world would Kid Rock be there? Because of fans. They "Under 35 favorite" award was just a one time deal for the awards are 35 years old. Basically, I knew the people there would win, that's the way it's been. I mainly turned in to watch Carrie Underwood perform.

Amber Sat, Jan 10, 2009 at 05:28 PM EST

House and Hugh !!
I was very happpy when they win!!

Anna Sat, Jan 10, 2009 at 03:42 PM EST

I watched the PCA's for the first time this year and I can guarantee i won't be tuning in again. Whitney I am so happy you wrote this because this is exactly how i and apparently many others have been feeling. I should only hope that people follow suit and demand more from these people working in the industry to create more meaningful and intelligent film and television. This is what's entertaining, not the mindless crap they insist on showing us. This is the best article I have read in a long time. THIS is what is meant by representing the people.

chase Sat, Jan 10, 2009 at 03:36 PM EST

I went to the awards and I too was shocked when I saw (and met) Paris Hilton, she didnt even win!

Gregory Sat, Jan 10, 2009 at 12:27 PM EST

The PCAs warrant no coverage. The show is a mindless, expanded red-carpet ride. Does anyone really need to watch the show to guess the "favorites"? Look at covers of People magazine, TV ratings, box office results for movies without an edge. It's all safe drivel. I haven't watched in twenty years. The addition of product-sponsored filler seems to have cheapened what was already a worthless affair.

Angel Sat, Jan 10, 2009 at 10:20 AM EST

One of the awards was well deserved. Kid Rock for his #1 all over the world Summer anthem, All Summer Long.

Great performer, True American. Bravo Rock Bravo

Steven Sat, Jan 10, 2009 at 08:50 AM EST

The show sucked I stopped watching half way through.

Jen Sat, Jan 10, 2009 at 05:00 AM EST

Ok, first of all, to "td" down there, re: "ugh, civil rights...give it a rest." Yeah, we know, it's just SO tiring to have to read about all these civil rights inequalities and then do nothing about them. "Doesn't affect me, so why should I care?" Because one day, dude, you're gonna find yourself on the other side of something unfair, and you'll wish people didn't have the same kind of apathy you're showing now.
Re: the PCAs. Um, (1) DON'T WATCH THEM. If no one watches, all the advertising that paid for them will GO AWAY. The advertisiting goes away, the SHOW GOES AWAY. (2) Do people really need to sit through all this drivel just to see The Dark Knight win a bunch of bogus awards? If you already like the movie, then just LIKE THE MOVIE. Why do you need an awards show to validate your choice? (3) Just because "nothing else was on" is no excuse. Put in a movie. Read something. Play with the kids. Go bowling. Call a friend. It's lazy TV viewing that keeps crap like this on air.

Erin Sat, Jan 10, 2009 at 01:02 AM EST

I love my award shows. But the PCAs were a joke. I have never been so pissed of by an award show in my life. I cannot add to anything you said- you hit it all spot-on. The only thing I might add is that Mariska Hargitay deserved more than anyone to win her category. Her performance in Undercover, the episode for which she was nominated, was brilliant. Certainly better than any episode of Samantha Who could ever imagine being.

Morty Sat, Jan 10, 2009 at 01:00 AM EST

The "BEST" has little or nothing to do with award shows, but this award show scam must be banned from the airwaves for total shamelessness!

Maggie Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 11:25 PM EST

ALL awards shows were started as a way to get publicity for Hollywood! The People's Choice awards is no different, but at least it is less pretentious. They aren't saying "best", but rather are saying "favorite". When I look at the winners for past Oscars and Emmys, I think that the voters never saw what they were voting for. "The English Patient" and "American Beauty" were awful. ALL awards shows are jokes, but at least the People's Choice doesn't pretend to be about quality.

krys Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 11:11 PM EST

it was total crap !!!! i hate that show it's so terrible wrong how can 27 dresess wins over Mamma mia ???? and this is in just one , the others were awful!!! all the show , waiting for the globes, the sag, the grammy and the oscars

adam Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 07:12 PM EST

Hey Vicki Miller - Listen, I think Brad Pitt is great, and I'm still waiting for him to win an Oscar. But I don't think it should be for Benjamin Button. Don't get me wrong, I liked the movie and I thought he gave a good performance. But some of the other performances this year are just better (i.e. Mickey Rourke and Leonardo DiCaprio, who it seems might get overlooked for an Oscar nod). If Brad wasn't even given a nod for his amazing performance in last year's The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, I don't see how he can win this year. Just because he doesn't win doesn't mean that Hollywood is "blacklisting" him.
And how is it Jennifer Aniston's fault if he doesn't win? That's just ridiculous.
As for Angelina, she gave a good performance too, but Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, and Kate Winslet all gave stronger performances than her this year and are more deserving of a win.
Sorry but this just isn't the year for Brad and Angie. You're going to be disappointed.

Phil Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 06:45 PM EST

AMEN Miss Pastorek! The People's Choice Awards are not worth the time of a discerning mind. Past experiences have lead me down a depressing string of thought about the nominees and the idea that the majority of the people considered in this poopycock are philistine apes that know nothing of aesthetic expression or technical achievement. People are collectively base; they're sensualists that fail to use their minds or, perhaps even sadder, choose not to use their minds when experiencing the dull music and cinema (dull no matter how broad the appeal or boisterous the scenes) they seem to favor.
Emerson wrote "For non-conformity the world whips you with its displeasure...but the sour faces of the multitude, like their sweet faces, have no deep cause,--disguise no god, but are put on and off as the wind blows, and the newspaper directs."
The Critic Jay Sherman also wrote "Pheh!"

suzangrace Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 06:45 PM EST

Alyssa .. now you don't know the difference between 'your' and 'you're'. where did you learn english? can't believe you are receiving b's on college essays. who's your teacher, some rap star?

suzangrace Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 06:37 PM EST

what a bust! i hate almost all the people/shows they nominate. where eo they get these selections. why only country music entertainment - hate it. robin williams deserved his win. but most of it was strictly a popularity contest.

eaturveggies Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 06:24 PM EST

Woo-hoo, Whitney! Thanks to the shout-out for Sugarland, who weren't even nominated, but are MY choice for best artists, entertainers, songwriters....

Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 06:24 PM EST

You're disturbed Vicki. Get some help. Stop living vicariously through celebrities.

TinaV Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 06:16 PM EST

High Five to Whitney! You pretty much ran down the entire list of reasons I don't watch manufactured plastic dreck like the People's Choice Awards anymore. And I would have watched if I could stand it --Queen Latifah is one of my personal heroes.

Flinn Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 05:49 PM EST

Where is Norma Desmond [Sunset Boulevard]when you need her???

Vicki Miller Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 05:15 PM EST

I am so angry that Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are passed up constantly for awards. They are both gifted actors. If Brad Pitt does not win for the best actor for his film The Curious Case of Benjamin Button I will know that Hollywood is black listing him. And I blame cry baby Jennifer Aniston for that. She needs to get a grip, it is her fault she lost the most amazing actor Brad. Country Music has done the same thing to Toby Keith. I will be watching the Golden Globes and if Brad and Angie are not the top winners it will confirm my suspicions.
Vicki

Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 05:14 PM EST

How come the people defending this show turn out to be the lackwits on this board. Alyssa can't differentiate "your" from "you're" and claims to be able to write better essays :) And Lauren claims that "Bees" made $37 million and all 37 million people loved it. Learn how to divide Lauren. Movie tickets don't cost a dollar each. I'm just saying :)

All in all, I turned on the television, and saw one category, where Robin Williams won for "Best Scene Stealer" (god what a retarded category), along with Britney Spears. Britney Spear's appearance on HIMYM should have easily won that because people that don't even watch that show definitely knew about that. Was a very boring show.

Elle Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 04:48 PM EST

Snarky attitude noted and expected as with most entertainment commentary these days, it's my personal opinion that most awards shows are nothing more than over the top advertising for the entertainment industry. I feel the article would have been better pared down dramatically and followed by a short list of winners and nominees.

My main problem with this article though is the following:
"Yes we can think analytically, write articulately, and speak passionately about art and artists in our society." and earlier in the above article "...and like 200 people rose as one from the good seats to collect the "Favorite TV Drama" award for House." When taking the role of critic please make sure you are as critical of your own work as you are of others.

Eric Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 04:14 PM EST

Well done! Of course I didn't watch that yawner. But I too am so sick of this separation of "critics" and audiences, as if audiences aren't allowed to, or supposed to like smart, well-made movies; or as if critics are some kind of enemy, instead of informed (low paid) stewards of culture (as the good ones are). And you line about Ellen was amazing!

sam Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 03:59 PM EST

i thought the show was a little ho-hum until the end.seeing christian bale say here's to heath gave me goosebumps!the dark knight and especially heath ledger deserve many great arwards!hope this is the first of many!!

Lauren Donner Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 03:33 PM EST

"Marley and Me" was released into 3500 theaters at Christmas, "the Secret Life of Bees" was released into 1500 theaters in Oct. "The Secret Life of Bees" might have only made $37 mil., since it was an INDEPENDENT FILM, but all 37 mil. of those people loved it. Don't be so cynical about voting results. And by the way, the cast of "Beverly Hills 90210" was also in the audience and didn't win.

Kai Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 03:06 PM EST

I remember several years ago at the american music awards when whomever performed would win the very next award. I was thinking it was one of those fixed up situations until Shania performed and then didn't win.

Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 02:22 PM EST

I was at the awards. At least half the winners were already printed in the program, so it made me feel like a hostage having to sit there and wait for the darn thing to be over. It was totally obvious who would win for each category because only the winners were there (unless the "losers" were nominated for another category in which they won).
And honestly, all of the nominations didn't look like the people (and I mean ALL of America...not the people that work for American Idol, United Talent Agency, Creative Artists Agency and CBS) really choose them. Why wasn't Sugarland nominated for best country song?

All in all, it was a night to remember....mostly for the wrong reasons.

Arlington, VA Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 01:31 PM EST

I totally agree - I haven't bothered to watch People's Choice for years - barely made it through the one time I did years ago. Any word on how it did in the ratings?

michelle M Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 01:31 PM EST

um question? are the people who are really upset at this article, people who worked on the show or somthing.. cause they are mad that it sucked ( the show that is) anywhoo... the ratings speak for its self i didn't watch and aparently no one else did... don't be md just make it better next time...

djp2000 Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 11:52 AM EST

I COMPLETELY AGREE WITH EVERYTHING THAT WHITNEY PASTOREK WROTE. She totally nailed it. At least I had the Critics Choice Awards to watch the following night which honored actual good movies like Slumdog Millionaire and not crap like 27 Dresses. A lot of people have poor taste and prefer not to have to think, so I'll take the critics anytime.

Alisa Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 11:42 AM EST

As soon as you learn how to correctly use the words "your" and "you're" (Alyssa) maybe we'll start to take you seriously... you can't write a very good college essay misusing those 2 words.

oH nO..they did'nt... Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 11:35 AM EST

Some winners really deserved their awards...but for some....it was kinda a big ?...jaw-dropping...made me say WHAT?...Did I hear the name right? Maybe next year...the deserving ones will win....

Tim Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 11:15 AM EST

Don't the 'People' make their 'Choice' by buying the tickets, watching the shows and buying the cds in the first place? Aren't sales charts/results and ratings the true result of 'Peoples Choice'? Why bother with the awards show? It's just an opportunity to promote/publicize already overexposed 'celebrities'. It's never been about 'art'.

Alyssa Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 11:09 AM EST

Well Im a persistent little $hit, and I have to say you guys are full of yourselves and no I am not naive, among the other things I have been called, child, retard, low expectations. This isn't journalism this is bashing people. Oh and if you really read through I am not the only one who enjoyed the show. I voted, alot of others voted we watched and we had a good time. And you guys are being selfish and cruel for starting a blog where you can make fun of the event and call us names. Whitney I wouldnt get used to your job. YOUR a terrible journalist, I write better college essays than this, and most come out a high B.

me Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 10:38 AM EST

you are right on, whitney. thanks for putting what we were all thinking into words. the nominees in most of the categories wouldn't have even made my top ten! and the same "we do it for the people" speech that we had to hear over and over was soooo insincere and actually I found it a bit condescending. i will not waste any more of my time on peoples choice.

Keala Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 10:24 AM EST

I was completely disgusted by the "winners" too and thought what morons did they ask about this? I turned the channel about halfway through.

Erin Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 10:16 AM EST

You are brilliant and absolutely correct! I was very disappointed and aggravated and couldn't even watch the whole thing!

Dee Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 10:12 AM EST

I only watch the last half-hour of the Oscars and maybe bits and pieces of the Golden Globes. Other than those, I just check on-line the following morning who the 'winners' are of the various award show. I save myself lots of tv time by doing so, since my vote isn't going to count.
But I am with you, there are too many award shows to keep up with, and they are not all that exciting to me.

Lori Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 10:10 AM EST

I think it's time for us to find other ways to enjoy their free time instead of watching TV. Lets go back to when we sat and talked to each other, read, taught children manners, how to work hard, study for school. Ever since TV became the worlds' babysitter society has seemed to go down the drain. nothing better to watch then the PCA's?? Then turn off the TV and do something greater for you or your family. I don't mean this in a negative, sour, preaching way, just in a positive, we can change the label of "dumb Americans", way. Sounds good to me. ;)

Regan Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 10:04 AM EST

Love it.

Benst Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 10:00 AM EST

I should have spelled it Pulitzer Prizes. It speaks volumes they are not aired, but,the PCA are televised.
Almost anything that's cheap to produce and gets good ratings will be shown on television.
Thank goodness for PBS and TCM!

Ed Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 09:56 AM EST

Wow, did you use all the big fancy words you know in one article? That's too bad.

I wonder if we'll hear the same criticisms from you come Golden Globe or Academy Awards time, where the voting process (that means you, AMPAS) is shrouded in such secrecy you wonder "Who even watched that film or thought it was good to begin with?" See: English Patient, See: Out of Africa, See: Any film that has won best....ahem......"documentary" feature in the last 10 years.

Somehow, I doubt we will.

Girl Watcher Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 09:46 AM EST

You're right on about the show, the entertainers and the awards. The only reason I watch is to hope for a garment malfunction, I mean really is there any other reason to watch.

Robbyrob Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 09:44 AM EST

Gosh Drew, you are just sooooooo witty! Are you sure your not the 12 year old?

MEL Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 09:33 AM EST

SERIOUSLY!!! WHO LIKES BRAD AND ANGELINA ANYMORE??? WHO THE HECK WOULD VOTE FOR THEM?

MEL Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 09:33 AM EST

SERIOUSLY!!! WHO LIKES BRAD AND ANGELINA ANYMORE??? WHO THE HECK WOULD VOTE FOR THEM?

Benst Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 09:21 AM EST

The reason why there are so many awards shows on tv is the same reason there are so many talk shows on tv--they give good ratings for low cost. Instead of putting on a good show that costs millions of dollars, they air a cheap show that cost thousands of dollars. It's all about ratings and making money, and as long as people watch these worthless awards shows, the networks will continue to air them.
Most awards programs should be cancelled and the best ones, (the Nobel Prizes, the Pultizer Awards, and the Dupont-Columbia Awards for Brodcast Journalism) are rarely televised.

Alex Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 09:13 AM EST

The PCAs have become such a non-entity I didn't even know it was on last night. Last year's awards (derailed by the strike) generated some interest by including Doctor Who in one of the categories, but it didn't win. The PCAs were supposed to be some sort of "anti-Oscar" or "anti-Emmy" where the people actually get to say what they like, but it hasn't worked out that way. They should retire this one and come up with something new.

Dawn Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 09:10 AM EST

The best part was when someone yelled "I love you Ducky" to Jon Cryer. He will always be Ducky to me. Carrie U. looked great, but her singing was totally off in the beginning, same as R.F. even tho I don't know them.

Randy Pettit Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 09:10 AM EST

Award shows like this pander to the mindless idiots that spend their time in front of a TV or at the bar. Every night. The 'People' wouldn't know art if it was stuffed in their shorts. Kid Rock? Pulease. Axl-Bruce-Emenem wannabe. It's not like the song was even his, original, or good. Get out once in awhile, People!

DP Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 09:06 AM EST

spot on, it was beyond boring.

Ellen DeGeneres just ROCKS.

Drew Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 08:31 AM EST

This blog was spot on. What a bunch of BS. The Dark Knight only won to honor the dearly departed. The movie was awlful, and I have seen all the Batman movies. My 12yr old thought it was bad too. Robert Downing Jr should have got something for Iron Man. And Ellan Degenerate (spelled appropriately), don't get me going what a joke she is.

Kelly Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 08:27 AM EST

Thank god someone else noticed too. I thought it was just me. What a scam.

Gail Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 08:13 AM EST

Of course, you are right. I started watching but soon exited. It was a farce. And I intensely disliked the fake enthusiasm performed by everyone involved. It seemed to be aimed at an audience at the age level of perhaps four or five years old. (My apologies to four and five year olds.)

monica Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 07:59 AM EST

Totally agree, the show was terrible and filled with winners who perhaps didn't deserve to win. I don't know what people they pole but it isn't the people I know.

Nick Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 07:56 AM EST

The People's Choice Awards are BS - kudos to your stones.

Message to David: don't judge Sandler's talents until you've seen PTA's "Punch Drunk Love" - sure, he's an idiot 95% of the time but that's a helluva film/performance.

STUART Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 07:49 AM EST

Great blog. Somebody has to say what they're thinking that isn't a suit. I didn't see the show, I was watering my silk plants .

Katie Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 07:45 AM EST

Yes I spelled Heroes wrong in that last post.
Oooops!

Katie Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 07:43 AM EST

The Peoples Choice Awards were a joke!

They didn't even bother to show the best sci fi tv show category and Heros won......give me a break. Supernatural fans voted like crazy (we are VERY loyal) and I would bet any money that Supernatural actually won.

~

mike Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 07:37 AM EST

I wouuld rather have a cleveland steamer dumped in my face than watch crap like this on TV. Congratulations on having the stones to call it what it is.

David Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 07:37 AM EST

Anything that features Adam Sandler will NEVER be watched by me. The idea that he is even considered for an award of any kind is unconscionable.

Sean Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 07:35 AM EST

Sorry, but I didn't check out your column for a political diatribe. I won't be back.

Matt Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 07:33 AM EST

I think you're gonna get fired for this outburst

Mark Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 07:20 AM EST

Another dumb show for the increasingly dumb American audience.

Wes Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 06:49 AM EST

You may also recall that shows in pas PCAs won and then were never seen again. Example: Moonlight.

Won last year for PCAs Best NEW Drama. Then, was promptly cancelled.

Really.

If the PCAs were really by "the people", then how could the "Best NEW Drama" voted for by the people not be renewed?

Reg Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 06:48 AM EST

While I appreciate that someone has finally stated the obvious, this sort of fluff has been gping on for years. Surprise that the winner is there. Yeah right. The disclaimer should say this show is a complete fraud and everyone is in on it!

Tam Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 06:45 AM EST

By now everyone over the age of 14 knows that PCA are a 'steaming pile'.All of the movie awards are faked. It's about distribution revenues, studio profits and politics.
The most money on the line IS the bottom line. The public is a flock chickens led to the box office by a few kernels of corn.
Ellen degeneres best talk show? That proves what a load this whole thing has become. A total waste of time! Amen.

end of infinity Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 06:23 AM EST

I think that ego laden show has a lot of people mega pissed and confused because for the first and last time I ever watched the show last year. I'd only watched it so i could relish in the victory of my 100% favorite show Moonlight. And other winners only remind me of the mistakes people must make online during these polls. Because I know that I didn't vote for any of the others and whoever did must have had there pet monkey vote for them, for all the terrible music, movies, and crap T.V., that won, and didn't deserve it. You gotta earn earn respect, even from the people!

Susan Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 05:40 AM EST

What a breathe of fresh air! Thank you for this piece from the bottom of my heart!

mehere Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 05:38 AM EST

After avoiding it for years, I actually watched it this time and felt as equally swindled as most posters and the author. Well written, Whitney, and thanks for saying it, so well. Some great turns of phrase - especially the Twizzlers bit and "aggressive gravitas" - exactly right. I did like the Dark Knight segment, even though I have seen no more of it than a myriad of clips and trailers. I don't think it's a matter of "show up, you win", but "You win. Show up. Pretty Please, with huge free promo points on top?"
Won't watch again but looking forward to the Golden Globes and the Oscar nominations. If they get the Oscar nominations right this time, it should be a good show as opposed to last year's tanked-ratings snooze fest.

AJ Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 05:37 AM EST

I was like most PEOPLES in that my CHOICE was to change the channel! But seriously folks, I normally love awards shows and have attended the Emmys, but this show just isn't worth watching or attending. I hate to see normally forthright celebrities fake the surprise when they win.

John Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 05:17 AM EST

Whitney, if I could stand up and applaud any harder, my hands would soon be bloody nubs. You're absolutely spot on. If we want the entertainment industry to stop churning out garbage, we need to stop apathetically consuming it. Bravo, and I'm glad you had the guts to say it.

Nancy Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 05:15 AM EST

Well, I watched because Hugh Laurie and HOUSE were both nominated. I wanted to see if they would win and I was VERY HAPPY when they DID WIN!!
HUGH LAURIE is an AMAZING actor and HOUSE is my favorite show.
I also loved the song that Carrie Underwood sang. She has a great voice.
The rest of the nominations I didn't care about.
Maybe you'll all prefere the award show that's on this weekend.
Also, GO TITANS on Saturday!!!

Devon Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 05:13 AM EST

I agree with everything stated here. I recorded it last night, went to watch it today and watched maybe 45min of it. It was beyond unwatchable. However, I was very happy to see Hugh Laurie win. I am an enormous House fan and other than the two categories that House won in, I wouldn't have even chosen those nominees in any of the categories...

[And since when does smashing together 2 great rock songs (Warren Zevon's "Werewolves of London" and Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Sweet Home Alabama") mean YOU deserve favorite 'NEW' rock song?!?!]

Caon Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 04:58 AM EST

I was sickened watchingthe "peoples choice awards". It felt like a 2 hour commercial for The Dark Night. We get it Warner Brothers, you are pushing for Heath to get an Oscar! Buying up other awards and re-releasing the movie is doing nothing more then pushing me AWAY from TDK, I'm almost sick of it now.. and I liked it

This was not an award show, and this was not picked by the people. This was a way for those willing to pay to get free advertising.

peggy Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 04:37 AM EST

worst awards show ever, very predictable and a waste of time

peggy Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 04:35 AM EST

the worst award show ever and pretty predictable

Jerry Flores Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 04:31 AM EST

Never use People's Choice as a barometer of SAG, Oscar, or even Golden Globes. People's Choice make the Golden Globes look like the Oscars.

Elise Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 04:12 AM EST

Wow, way to name drop Dark Knight not once, but TWICE. That's just the kind of analytical and passionate independent thinking we all hoped for!

Apart from that, my friend who attended agrees with you 200% and so do I/

Zach Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 04:02 AM EST

My mom also thought it was ridiculous that Bees won for Drama. I love the Queen, but the People's Choice Awards have never been about the people's choice -- and the winners are always in the audience. Unfortunately, with a dearth of variety entertainment on TV these days except for American Idol and its knockoffs, we don't have much else to look forward to.

Amanda Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 03:43 AM EST

I liked Batman, not my favorite film but worth a rental. There have not been many movies in the last year or so worth the very high priced ticket price nor a tv show that warrants a late night up and baggy eyes in the morning. Most shows are good for the first season or so, then greed spreds througout the cast and the quality suffers. Did they pre-pick the winners for popularity or simply to try to increase sales and viewers!! I doubt there is anyone in television interested in quality, it is after all not as profitable as quantity.

DL Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 03:35 AM EST

I don't know how they got more fake cheese into this program -- but they managed it. It's old school hokey, and not in a cool retro way, sort of in a pathetic clingy way, like the Miss America Pagent.

Euthanasia is not just for Europeans anymore, let's break out the pillow and put us all out of our misery.

Maggie Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 03:29 AM EST

"most people think Hugh Laurie was deserving and Batman was great.
Therefore, it stands to reason that more than 90% people would love it if Hugh Laurie played Batman in the next movie. What a casting coup! I'd definitely pay double to see that. What about you guys?"

Shan, no I wouldn't want to see Hugh Laurie as Batman. But I would love to see Hugh Laurie as the main villian in a Batman movie. And I'd also love to see HL play Sherlock Holmes in a movie series.

Berman Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 03:20 AM EST

I actually attended the awards show with a friend, and about 5 minutes in to the show it was very obvious who the winners were. It was such an odd group of A-listers and "where do i know them from-listers." Carrie Underwood's performance was the only thing worth watching.

ArbiterOfGoodTaste Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 03:13 AM EST

I couldn't stomach this tripe for more than five minutes, but I'm assuming it didn't get any better. ...And I thought the Grammys were unwatchable!

Louis Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 03:08 AM EST

I feel exactly the same way. When I saw the opening bit with Queen Latifah talking with Adam Sandler, Robin Williams and Kid Rock... I knew immediately they were all winners. In fact, my 14 year old son got upset with me because I kept "predicting" the winners and getting them right. It's nice that the celebrities show up for this bogus event, but it really is one big sham... (I must say though the Carrie Underwood performance was great.(

Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 03:03 AM EST

Oh my god, THANK YOU! The only worthy part of watching that thing was Christian Bale's acceptance speech on behalf of Heath Ledger... which was, what, five words? But those were the only five words worth listening to all night.

Nana Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 02:43 AM EST

How about real awards for real people who work hard? Celebrities already get paid so much. Do they really need awards and fancy gift bags on top of huge salaries? How about spreading the fortune around? Give the awards and fancy gifts to real people who are doing real work that makes a difference.

Crystal Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 02:41 AM EST

I think the fact that I am a pop culture addict and never even saw how you would/could vote for the PCAs anywhere says everything.

Great post, Whitney!

Joanne Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 02:13 AM EST

Your article was perfect. After turning the T.V. on in the middle of the show and seeing Kate Hudson receive an award for favorite leading lady, I immediately turned off of the T.V. knowing that the rest of the show had to be bad. (I don't have anything against Kate but she is not exactly the best actress out there).
