The Worst Movies of 2008, for real this time

Jan 7, 2009, 07:30 AM | by Whitney Pastorek

Categories: Film, Horrifying But Hypnotic, Lists-o-rama!

Sevenpounds_l Just when you think we're done with the cumulative joys of year-end lists, another one pops up to remind us that hindsight, along with being 20/20 (yeah, that's what I meant), is also never-ending. The fine folks at New York magazine have recently posted their poll of the "nation's top critics," a combination of solicited responses and close-readings of archived reviews that calls out many of the expected offenders -- Speed Racer, The Love Guru, The Women -- and provides the complete "ballots" of each writer. (This is especially useful so I know who hated the X-Files sequel and can avoid them at parties.)

We've all got our own opinions on this sort of thing. (If I were to name my worst, it would be one of those tiny piece of crap indies I was forced had the pleasure of seeing at Sundance that never made it to the multiplex, since I tend to not bother with stuff like 88 Minutes once I've been warned.) But to me, the real fun of this list is two-fold. First, I love reading a brilliantly-crafted evisceration, like Roger Ebert on The Spirit: "To call the characters cardboard is to insult a useful packing material." Hee-hee. (Are you reading Ebert, people? Please be reading Ebert.)

Secondly, and perhaps in some way reassuringly to the filmmakers in question, I suddenly find myself wanting to see the badness for myself. And thus do I guarantee you that, before the week is out, I will have purchased a ticket to this list's No. 1 Worst Movie of 2008, Will Smith's Seven Pounds (pictured), provided it is still playing somewhere around here. Because anything EW critic Lisa Schwarzbaum deems an "unintentionally ludicrous drama of repentance as an extreme sport" and the New York Times' A.O. Scott calls "One of the most transcendently, eye-poppingly, call-your-friend-ranting-in-the-middle-of-the-night-just-to-go-over-it-one-more-time crazily awful motion pictures ever made," I simply must see for myself.

What about you, PopWatchers? Care to weigh in with your worst pictures from 2008? I also invite you to put on your writing caps and explain your reasoning in the most enticing way possible. I don't just want to know what's bad, I want to know why it sucks and if that suckage is in any way magical. Sell those train wrecks!

Benjamin Button and Twilight! Nothing changes my mind!

Thu, Jan 22, 2009 at 12:15 PM EST

Benjamin Button was one of the worst, hands down!!!! I wanted to leave the room halfway through!

JA Tue, Jan 20, 2009 at 01:12 AM EST

Ebert liked Seven Pounds. So did I.

Jason Sun, Jan 11, 2009 at 04:07 PM EST

Ok maybe not worst movie but biggest disappointment for me was dark knight! I've had heard so much about it and I had so high expectations but I was dored to death while watching it! I don't understand what's so special with the dark knight movie and critics love it

Jen Sat, Jan 10, 2009 at 05:24 AM EST

I think ALL "Best & Worst" lists are moot. Unless the person writing the list has literally seen every movie that came out, how can they possibly say which is the absolute best or worst of the year? As far as the NYT list goes, some of those critics are self-aggrandizing, pretentious, nose-in-the-air snobs. Seriously--A guy who says the absolute, hands-down worst movie of the year was "Benjamin Button", and not some trash like "The Love Guru", "10,000 BC", or "The Hottie and the Nottie" is clearly going for kudos and props from his "n+1"-reading cronies instead of just telling it like it is. The TRUE trash of pop culture (like "The Love Guru", etc.) will never die if critics are still more concerned with impressing each other than with telling the truth. If what they really mean by these lists is "Biggest Disappointment of the Year," then I understand some of their choices. But calling relatively decent (okay, even just passable) movies the ABSOLUTE WORST (!!!) is just...dumb.

Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 03:06 PM EST

I didn't like the new bond movie at all! Neither dark knight

donner Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 10:08 AM EST

I dodged a lot of crap (Marley and Me, Sex and the City, Seven Pounds) cause they all looked bad to begin with, so I never bothered going...BUT, the one movie I can say I DID go see and really disliked was QUANTUM OF SOLACE...ugh...really awful...and I liked the other Daniel Craig Bond movie so much...sigh...

seattle_girl Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 11:41 PM EST

Absolutely do NOT see Sandler's Zohan unless you are somehow entertained by the man's ego-maniacal fascination with his own testicles. I'm surprised they didn't receive their own billing in the credits. (And don't take your 13 yr old daughter and her friends unless you're wayyyy 'cooler' than me.) Sandler is apparently unaware of the fact that the rest of us don't necessarily share in the same adulation of his over-stuffed crotch.

Gill Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 08:57 PM EST

The happening, Twilight, Speed Racer, Hellboy 2, SATC and yes even The Dark Knight was disappointing

Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 08:55 PM EST

Twilight was horrible, hands down

Anna Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 08:50 PM EST

Dark Knight was very overrated IMO and i couldn't stand Twilight and Sex & the city

johnny Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 07:33 PM EST

Noah, I didn't see Babylon AD, but I'll take your word on it. And I agree, 10,000 BC was definitely the worst movie I saw all year. A total joke of a film.

NOT Quantum of Solace Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 08:41 AM EST

Don't blame the movie for your lack of ability to follow it. I had no trouble following the plot or recognizing a burn.

Noah Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 05:06 AM EST

Is no one aware of the atrocities that were Babylon AD and 10,000 BC?
Complete rubbish.

johnny Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 02:46 AM EST

hey adam, I'm totally with you. Will Smith is a bit overrated. I'm glad to finally see someone else admit it.

Sidra Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 01:13 AM EST

QUANTUM OF SOLACE. Close ups of Daniel Craig's face only force the audience to count his many wrinkles, and even people who'd seen Casino Royale couldn't make head or tail or the so-called plot. And until the end of the movie, I thought Olga Kurylenko's burn was a tattoo.

DarkHawke Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 01:03 AM EST

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Speed Racer was one of the best movies of the summer, and for my hard-earned, the year. It blew my mind from jump and didn't stop till the end of the credits. It COMPLETELY captured the look and feel of the old cartoon, no small feat considering no previous similar movie has achieved that feat. Much as with The Matrix, I saw things on that IMAX screen that I'd never seen before and they were all just ASTOUNDING. But more than just the outstanding Wachowski razzle-dazzle, there was an unexpected gem in this movie: it had both heart and soul. The grand spectacle was centered around a genuinely warm and loving family and you got that in every scene between Speed and Mom and Pops, day-glo neon sets or no. How the critics missed all this, I cannot tell you, save perhaps that they knew nothing of the original cartoon and were imperceptive enough to not accept this great movie for what it was. Their loss.

aaron Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 12:56 AM EST

Oh, and to the poster who mysteriously has no name (ahem, beth) who said someone must be a brain damaged toddler to not see the ending of marley and me in the trailers, I think you should watch the trailer again because there is absolutely nothing that points to that type of ending. Most people don't analyze and try to guess the ending of a movie after seeing the trailer, they just get excited about seeing a good movie and you have killed any excitment for anyone who read your thoughtless post. You must be one of those people whom everyone avoids before seeing a movie because they know you'll give away something. Idiot.

Alyssa Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 12:52 AM EST

Marley and Me is no where near the term Worst movie, anyone who thinks so should check their blood pressure. In fact alot of these movies Im reading dont come close to Worst movie. So if you say something like I cant believe so and so isnt on here it maybe because your the only one that hated it. But us stupid Americans cant think outside the box can we.

Alyssa Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 12:38 AM EST

Walle and Dark Knight haters can just go into hiding for all we care. YOUR a very odd breed of people. And I say it again I think you are looking for attention. Oh I will updated you now, The Dark Knight just won a record 5 Peoples Choice Awards, every one it was nominated for it won. Walle won an Award for favorite family film as well.

aaron Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 12:34 AM EST

Beth, thanks for ruining marley and me for me! you know, just because you didn't like a movie doesn't mean you have the right to tell them the ending and totally ruin it for people. It hasn't even been out that long so you can't say we should have known it by now. I really hate people like you who just can't seem to keep their big traps shut!

BOSTON Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 12:18 AM EST

First & foremost, I would like to say that I am a HUGE fan of Will Smith--since the Fresh Prince days--but I have to say 'Seven Pounds' was a little disappointing (I think Oprah may have over-praised the movie a bit when Smith was promoting it on her show).

I kept waiting for the movie to pick up, but there were too many different story lines/ characters (they were easy to keep up with, but were just "bleh").

The love story between Dawson & Smith's characters were sweet, but that's it...nothing to go all 'Titanic' over. I'll admit, even though the ending (like, the last 3 minutes) was a little far-fetched, I did get a little teary-eyed.

With that said, I was disappointed w/ Smith's judgement on this one--I would rather watch 'The Pursuit of Happyness' a hundred more times rather than sit through 'Seven Pounds' again...but I'm still a Will Smith fan!

tommy Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 11:59 PM EST

I don't know why all of you guys are dissing The Dark Knight and Button those were both great acheivments! I personally think these were the 5 worst movies of the year:
1. Don't Mess with Zohan
2. Fool's Gold
3. The Spirit
4. The Happening
5. Indy 4

Vladi B. Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 10:43 PM EST

"Wholly depressing the amount of discouraging words toward both Wall-E and the Dark Knight. These must be the same people that say "if the critics hate it then I know I'll love it" BINGO! You are all obviously unenlightened (or uneducated) morons. I hope you all enjoy another year of Zohans and Love Gurus, you've earned them." 100% agreed! Great movie, great script and play!
I've thought that this movie should be done and seen in Europe, but I'we found here a lot people able to got the message this movie delivered. Thank you all people who made this movie! Regards, Vladi

Jan Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 10:26 PM EST

Great movie I've ever seen in USA, for the last 10-15 years all Hollywood plastic movies; Thank a lot!

Aleksa Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 10:03 PM EST

Sorry, I loved Repo.

Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 09:47 PM EST

Um, Will? ALL the reviews "spoil" (and I use the term loosely; a brain-damaged toddler could see it coming) the ending of Marley & Me. Chill out.

Nicole Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 09:45 PM EST

Repo the Genetic Opera, hands down!

Taylor M. Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 09:29 PM EST

As a huge (somewhat obsessed) fanatic of all things Bond, Quantum of Solace was rather dissapointing. not sure if it deserves to be one of the fifty worst movies of '08, but I had higher expectations for it after the amazing Casino Royale- my favorite movie EVER!

Phil Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 09:28 PM EST

If I would have remember "Strange Wilderness" came out in '08, I would have definately put that #1. Not only the worst movie of the year, but amongst the worst movies I've ever seen. If you want to torture someone, get them Strange Wilderness.

Sean Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 09:01 PM EST

Wholly depressing the amount of discouraging words toward both Wall-E and the Dark Knight. These must be the same people that say "if the critics hate it then I know I'll love it" BINGO! You are all obviously unenlightened (or uneducated) morons. I hope you all enjoy another year of Zohans and Love Gurus, you've earned them.

Joe C Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 08:48 PM EST

I just saw Seven Pounds, and I, huge Will Smith fan that I am, was disappointed. Great acting can't overcome a poorly paced script.

BTW--I thought that the Dark Knight ws overrated. Yes, Heath Ledger was great, but it was too long, and the Two-Face storyline was distracting. As I feel that the first Tobey McGuire Spider Man movie was overrated as well, I still maintain that a good superhero movie is the hardest feat to pull off.

Jennifer Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 07:43 PM EST

ITA Peanut. I didn't know we we're being graded. LOL!!

internet gangsta Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 07:26 PM EST

The New York list is terrific. Not because those movies are the worst, far from it, but because it exposes the dark echo chamber of pathetically cynical group-think that most critics live in. What normal person would see Seven Pounds and be so unmoved as to conclude that it was the hands down worst movie of the year? I, too, predicted the plot from the title alone, but unlike A.O. Scott and Richard Roeper I'm not so constitutionally averse to naked, dare I say spiritual, themes of self-sacrifice and self-torment as to pan it so wholeheartedly. Of course, the writer of this post and whoever else goes to see the movie will inevitably join the chorus. This is how critics kill movies.

As for Vulture's glib reference to the Wachowski "siblings," at this point, is there any critic alive who could be relied upon for an objective review of one of their films?

After all the clever diatribes aimed at "Funny Games," the real sadists are soulless, self-gratifying movie reviewers. What a joke

mark Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 07:18 PM EST

Indian Jones - Not only the most disappointing film of the year, but truly one of the worst films of the year. Say what you will about it not being "that bad," but it had a ridiculously horrendous script. And that piece of s*** George Lucas wants to make another. It has become clear that he will stop at nothing to destroy every last remnant of his once magnificent legacy.

Gena Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 07:18 PM EST

The Happening - Wind is not scary
Twilight - Vampires don't glitter
The Women - Starting a contest with the woman who your husband is sleeping with seems unnecessary. Why not just shoot your husband a la Chicago style?

adam Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 07:11 PM EST

Is it just me, or does anyone else think that Will Smith is the most overrated actor in Hollywood? I don't think he's a bad actor; he's fine. I just don't think he's as amazing as people make him out to be. There are much better actors around.

Clint Dooley Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 07:09 PM EST

I could not read all of these comments because I got sick of all the Dark Knight blasting. What do you people think good cinema is? Artsy Fartsy Howard's End rubbish??? I will admit that I didn't get to the Tinsletown but only a couple of times this year (primarily Dark Knight), but for my buck I will name off my worst....

Inidana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
(Destroyed Indy... very sad)

The Happening (a 2 hour Al Gore speech, and just as boring)

AVP-Requiem (They took a great idea and demeaned it down to a teeny slasher flick)

Please leave Dark Knight alone. It was a huge beacon of perfection in an age of Hollywood lacklusterness.

Nick Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 07:05 PM EST

One last thing:

Don't diss Synecdoche cause it's brainy, or Happy-Go-Lucky cause it's optimistic. Those two films, especially #1, got filleted by viewers, and the first even got flak from critics. Both were excellent and both will make my top ten.

Peanut Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 07:03 PM EST

For me I thought "Prom Night" and "The Happening" were pretty bad. But there is really is no 'wrong' answer to this question. It's all personal choice. One persons gravy is another persons turd.

Nick Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 07:02 PM EST

Oh, and I forgot. Step Brothers I began watching, listened only a bit past the Vampire Weekend song, and quickly disliked immensely. It was one of those unfunny rehashes of Talladega Nights Will Ferrell puts together every year. Awful.

Nick Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 06:58 PM EST

Seven Pounds was awful, as was David Mamet's Redbelt. I also was impartial to Be Kind Rewind, Indiana Jones 4, Jumper, Quantum of Solace, and Son of Rambow, a movie in limited release that you probably hadn't (luckily) heard of. The Curious Case... was pretty bad as well, and definitely the most disappointing hyped film of the year.

Nick Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 06:58 PM EST

Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 06:41 PM EST

Yeah totally The Dark Knight! Overhyped for nothing!

Lola Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 06:39 PM EST

Dark Knight and Sex & the city!!!!

Ellipsian Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 06:30 PM EST

Yeah, sorry critics, but "Seven Pounds" is just gonna have to be one of those movies about which you are completely over critical. No, it's not a masterpiece or anything (and it can arguably be categorized as the most dramatic no-cell-phones-whilst-driving lesson ever), but the acting of leads Smith and Dawson alone elevate the film to much more than the ridiculous horrors to which most are comparing it.

Sally Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 06:25 PM EST

While not the worst movies of the year by any means I also thought WALLE and THE DARK KNIGHT were overrated. And SEX AND THE CITY big time!

Fatima Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 06:20 PM EST

Anyone saying Dark Knight, Rachel Getting Married, Benjamin Button or Australia needs to go into seclusion. We won't miss you.

Oh and Dana, you are the ONLY one who said Wall-E. No one joined you that I can see.

Kara Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 06:18 PM EST

I was ENTIRELY disappointed with Twilight.

Director Catherine Hardwicke did an awful job with pacing the movie.

Also, Robert Pattinson's "American" accent was hideous.

DO NOT judge the book by it's movie! ...Because Twilight the book is SO much better!!!!!!

CJ Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 05:55 PM EST

agree on Rachel Getting Married; I cannot believe we had to listen to all 100 guests toast to the couple; I thought it was a joke.

Dana Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 05:55 PM EST

The Dark Knight, Benjamin Button and Twilight are the biggest disappointments

Sandra Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 05:53 PM EST

So harried was Heath as the Joker I could barely watch. I couldn't understand half of what he mumbled - he talked like his tongue was SO in his way. I find it unbelievable that people keep spending money to see Adam Sandler in those stupid movies. Enough! Clive Owen should have been James Bond, not short Blondie = bad Quantam. Mama Mia was frantic - hey editors, couldn't you cut each shot even shorter? Your editing murdered that musical. And why does Hollywood think I want to spend money to see a baby puke all over everybody? Or for that matter, I don't care to see any bodily excretions on film - I have to put up with that crap at home and at work. Also stop with the remakes. How many remakes have to fail before Hollywood gets a clue? Life sucks more each day and I go to the movies to see something worthwhile.

Tim Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 05:48 PM EST

I wasn't thrilled with The Dark Knight. Someone shoot Christian Bale's growl coach please. The only redeeming quality was Heath's performance. Superb.

J. Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 05:23 PM EST

Anyone who puts The Dark Knight on their list of bad movies should get a hammer and hit themselves in the head with it. Just do us all a favor now.

jenn Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 05:17 PM EST

Steve - your comment is perfect. I agree 100 %.

Jennifer Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 05:16 PM EST

I was getting worried that no one mentioned Sex and the City. It might not have been the worst, but def the most disappointing of the year. Indy was the same thing. They weren't horrible, just so much less than their potential. Just to stick up for one on the list that I really liked. Tropic Thunder. I laughed from the fake previews to Tom Cruise's ludicrous end-credit dance. I really liked that movie!

Booker T Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 05:08 PM EST

I think you mean hindsight is 20/20 not 50/50.

Steve Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 05:04 PM EST

While everyone is entitled to their opinion, I would suggest that many here are submitting most disliked over actual "Worst Film". While Seven Pounds was a bore for me, and Australia was a disjointed under-achievement; I would submit that they are still better movies than: Meet The Spartans, Love Guru, College, Repo, Prom Night, Space Chimps, Hottie & Nottie, The Women, The Spirit, Disaster Movie, Speed Racer, 10,000 BC, Strange Wilderness, Twilight, Never Back Down, Semi-Pro, Day The Earth Stood Still, Over her dead Body, Mad Money, Boy In The Striped Pajamas, War Inc., Step Brothers, Bangkok Dangerous, Babylon AD, Babylon AD, Babylon AD (which shockingly no-one even mentions!!)
C'mon people, let's be real. There are movies we didn't like and movies that are truly lacking in merit and there should be a difference between the two.

Meier Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 05:00 PM EST

(raises hand with a smug smile)
I'VE been reading Ebert!

mary june Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 04:58 PM EST

i tend not to watch movies that look horrible-- it's people's own fault that they don't read reviews and watch the tralers. the happening looked horrible before the reviews came out, and so did the love guru, houndog, the woman, seven pounds, ect...

Jennifer Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 04:55 PM EST

Australia was AWFUL. I'm breaking out in hives just thinking about it. Man, I hated that movie.

Akmodan Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 04:53 PM EST

Disaster Movie. That movie was an offense to all 5 senses. You know, I think it was an offense to the sixth one too. I'm kinda surprised I haven't seen it more often in the comments or in the top 10 worst movie list.

Broadway Baby Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 04:49 PM EST

'W' however was bad. Besides the great performance Brolin put in, the rest of the film was just seemingly rushed to production: bad writing, bad acting, and a serious lack of imagination. It would have been nice if I left the theater with something worldly to ponder rather than to wonder how long the nap I took was.

Tinyredcar Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 04:47 PM EST

Australia would have to be my worst of the year, followed by Far North (which some idiot on here recommended, I believe). I was so looking forward to Australia, and I adore Baz Luhrman usually, but it was so long it made my back ache, and so cloyingly sentmental it made me want to vomit. Seeing Hugh Jackman with his kit off just didn't compensate.

dave Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 04:35 PM EST

1)Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull: South Park said it all. They took Indiana Jones, one of the coolest movie characters ever, and they raped him. Thanks a lot Lucas and Spielberg, I hope you two are proud of yourselves. You should both be arrested for this heinous crime.
2)10,000 BC: I really don't think I've ever been so miserably bored during an "action" movie. I felt insulted while I watched it. Did Roland Emmerich (writer/director) think audiences would be so foolish as to enjoy this piece of garbage? It was excruciatingly dreadful.
3)Righteous Kill: Not only was the script terrible (cliches, lame plot twist) and filled with a pointless subplot (the girl liking rough sex), but this crapfest wasted the talent of two of the greatest actors of our time. What a miserable disappointment. But I'm sure Pacino and DeNiro both got a nice paycheck. (I'm sure 88 Minutes was just as bad, but I didn't see it)
4)Hancock and Seven Pounds: Will Smith gets two demerits.

Dana Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 04:32 PM EST

glad I'm not the only one who hated Wall-e and The Dark Night The first drove me nuts with all the sound effects and the second one just drove me nuts!

Damion Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 04:32 PM EST

Wow, anyone who has anything bad to say about "Dark night" should never bother wasting their time to review a film ever again, as that was one of the few flawless films of the decade so far, nevermind the year.

However, as for movies that I highly disliked, I really agree that "The Happening" is up there along with "Burn After Reading," but the WORST of the year by far was "Jumper" and the best film of the year that is sadly, horrifically boring is definitely "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button."

"Speed racer" was NOT one of the worst films of the year...not even close and am sick of hearing that.

Riecy Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 04:23 PM EST

Seven Pounds is by far the worst movie I have seen in a long time.

Will Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 04:22 PM EST

Hey Beth, thanks a lot for the Marley and Me spoilers! What is wrong with you?! Do not post the end of a movie that has only been out for a few weeks.

MoroccoMole Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 04:02 PM EST

In no particular order:

Strange Wilderness
College
Hounddog
Space Chimps
The Day the Earth Stood Still
Soul Men
My Best Friend's Girl
Bangkok Dangerous
Death Race
Swing Vote
The Love Guru
War, Inc.
The Women
Untraceable
Funny Games
The Happening
Mad Money
27 Dresses
Made of Honor
Hancock
Seven Pounds

Sarah Thompson Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 04:02 PM EST

Unfortunately, I didn't see many movies this year that WEREN'T awful.

But Mamma Mia! made me want my life back.

After I saw The Happening, my friends and I stood outside the theater for 2 hours and couldn't run out of ways that the movie sucked,

and Tropic Thunder was completely lost on me. I never laughed. One of the LEAST funny movies I've ever seen. It was like a Will Ferrell movie, which, from the rest of these comments, it seems like my hatred for Will Ferrell has saved me from 2 more horrible films.

Brandon Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 03:57 PM EST

The Love Guru
The Women
The Happening
Indiana Jones 4
You Don't Mess With The Zohan
Meet the Spartans

jradz Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 03:53 PM EST

There's not a word in our vocabulary to describe the singular awfulness of Rachel Getting Married. Relentlessly atrocious.

J Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 03:46 PM EST

The Dark Knight. Without question, the worst I saw this year. Actually walked out on it. I don't care if Ledger died, and I don't care if it made a gazillion bucks. It was not good.

Marty McDoodle Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 03:43 PM EST

Get Smart and Pineapple Express are at the top of my worst list followed by...Benjamin Button.

Monie Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 03:24 PM EST

I do not agree with this at all. Seven Pounds was the worst movie of the year?! Give me a break. Just from the title and commercials of some movies out this year, I knew they would suck. Why would anyone waste their time seeing Meet Dave or Semi-Pro? Will Smith is a brilliant actor and I enjoyed Seven Pounds and Hancock. You people have no taste!

Clayton Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 03:17 PM EST

It almost pains me to say it, but Indiana Jones- I was willing to overlook the whole nuclear bomb/ fridge fiasco, but when the aliens started coming to life and the temple turned into a spaceship even Indy wasn't enough to keep this movie from competely jumping the shark. I mean really...with all the other cool explanations for the Crystal Skulls you could have ran with, you picked...crystal skelaton aliens. Way to go.

I can't believe Marly & Me is not on the list of bad movies! It was so boring people were leaving the theater and then at the end they RIP your heart out with him dying. In my opinion a movie should be really good before they drop you into a deep depression! Owen Wilson is the WORST actor I have every seen in my life! Listening to him talk is like fingernails on a chalk bored at a REALLY SLOW PACE!! YUCK!

Zach and Miri Make a Porno. I laughed once, and it was an accident because I thought I actually saw something funny.

Jimmy Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 03:03 PM EST

the woman, terribly directed and written and surprisingly bad acting from annette benning aside from two scenes. It is sad to see that this is what Meg Ryan has been reduced to, and Eva Mendes sure had a bad year with this and the spirit.

A. Fabulous, your anti-"Nights in Rodanthe" rant made my day! I was dragged to that pitiful excuse for a big budget film by my mother (in a rare moment of crappy judgment) and her best friend. Halfway through, they both leaned over to me and whispered, "This is so bad." Honestly, if my thimble-sized cup of Diet Coke hadn't cost three bucks, I probably would've pitched it at the screen. Richard Gere's line about the landscape of Ecuador being nothing compared to the peaks and valleys of Diane Lane's body was the final straw; I burst out laughing with absolutely no regard to the angry menopausal women surrounding me, all of whom had tears streaming down their faces.

You Don't Mess With the Zohan
...maybe its an american humor thing, but i thought it was worse than cheap improv comedy done by the mentally ill

Mamma Mia is for middle age chicks and
old diva kings. Abba's sucks.

Sam Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 02:34 PM EST

Seven Pounds is without question S***!!! I wanted to slap Will Smith after I watched that crap! It's saved from being the worst movie of 2008 by 10,000 BC which is the worst movie of the past decade!!!

JC Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 02:31 PM EST

With the exception of Eva Mendes' perfect ass, The Spirit sucked so bad.

Preston Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 02:22 PM EST

Both Will Ferrell movies, Step Brothers and the '70s themed Semi Pro were the WORST last year! His comedy style is becoming pretty lame as of late. That funny formula that worked in 2004, 2005 and 2006 isn't happening now. It's becoming a little stale as of late.

Preston Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 02:19 PM EST

Any dumb thrown together kind of movie, namely comedies with dumb, stupid acting and people getting banged in the head. that is released in January. You can see why the richly acted movies get shown on November and December and get nominated at the Academy Awards. Because they don't want to compete with the dumb January stuff. I'm quite sure that Kevin James' upcoming movie on Jan 16 will be on the Worst of 2009 list--a movie about a mall cop on a Segway? It will be slammed by critics left and right! Believe that!

I would have to agree that the Happening was plain torture to my eyes... Mark Walbergs performance was stiff and lackluster, and I left with a feel of nausea when I left the theater.

Also 2nd place would go to Mamma Mia ! I realize it's a huge hit, but Pierce Brosnan and the campy flavor was way to sugary for me, I was in pure misery the entire time.

Hancock was the worst thing I've seen all year. Great idea to start with then it just fell apart with the introduction of Theron to the movie.

Brad Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 02:00 PM EST

"Rachel Getting Married" and "The Women...by far, no contest, the worst movies of 2008. I cannot believe Ann Hathaway is being touted for an Oscar nomination. And folks, props to Benjamin Button and Seven Pounds, two very worthy efforts.

Agreed with Southpark. Indiana Jones got raped and I did nothing. Top it off? A few weeks later news came out that the "original" crystal skulls were fakes.

Clone Wars got bad reviews and I skipped it, but still feel it deserves to be on the list. Why? Because it keeps us stuck in the wrong trilogy! If Lucas wants to milk fans with more "in between movies" flicks, at least show us what happened inbetween GOOD Star Wars movies.

The Happening is one of many "signs" that people need to stop giving M. Night money to make movies.

Over Her Dead Body deserves honorable mention. I was shocked a remake of a 50's Disney movie could be THAT bad. A "fake" gay guy was the plot twist? Ug.

My colleagues, Speed Racer sucked. I LOVED the cartoon. Alas, the movie took itself too seriously and was an hour too long. Just racing and tension with trixie would have been cool. But an Anti-Corporate message from the money-hungry cross marketing whore Wurkowski Bros? Ninja please.

Quantum of Solace was awesome! I can't believe all the complaints I've heard! Finally a Bond movie that doesn't spend half the movie doing nothing but talking and drinking and womanizing. The short, action packed way they did this one also made me cry, but in a good way.

Delia from Detroit Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 01:37 PM EST

Strangely enough, I sat all the way through "Meet Dave" and survived, wondering why Eddie Murphy continues to throw away his career. This movie didn't know if it was sci-fi or a family movie or a copy of a copy of a raunchy Judd Apatow film. And Pierce Brosnan should never ever try to sing, as I discovered in screening "Mamma Mia." The latest Bond, "Quantum of Solace," was disappointing, and ended with the Biggest Bond Cliche Ever -- the bad guy's secret hideout exploding.

Bob Decker Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 01:32 PM EST

"The Spirit" was so bad that I cried like a six year old with a skinned knee.

I LOVE reading what people think are the best/worst films. There always seems to be a common thread...most of the time. Check this site for more best/worst films www.nateflix.net

10,000 BC was one of the mst offensively awful, unintentionally hilarious movies I have seen in the last decade. To call it anachronistic is like calling a cheetah and kitten. The movie is an action flick, sure, but the filmmakers didn't even pretend to care that the movie takes place during a fascinating part of history. The fact that the whole thing is essentially a love story - Cavegirl with buckets of makeup and PERFECTLY plucked eyebrows gets kidnapped so beefy, sweaty Caveman must resuce her - is completely overshadowed by the chintzy CGI, embarrassingly bad script, and acting so wooden it practically has roots.

kc Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 01:23 PM EST

i have to say speed racer was crap! also the happening was horrible! ive never been so ashamed of M. Night's movies! i mean come on killer trees! wow it was worse then lady in the water! finally step brothers! i didnt get it at all i mean really?! will farrel is so much better then that!

SW Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 01:20 PM EST

I enjoyed Mamma Mia, at least until Pierce Brosnan started singing... then it became pure torture. 21 was the only movie I actually got up and walked out of because it was so boring. And I was very disappointed in Chapter 27. I had high hopes for Jared Leto, but the movie was just awful.

Tony Baritone Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 01:19 PM EST

I thought Benjamin Button was pretty bad. The only good part was in the middle with the tugboat captain. The last hour was painful. Like a bad soap opera. Will Smith has now become one of my least favorite actors. He's horrible at drama. Right up there with Keanu Reeves. He should stick to comedy/action.
