Bruce Springsteen leaks: The new album is out there

Last night brought a surprise for Bruce Springsteen fans: Right around dinner time, his album Working on a Dream leaked online all at once, two weeks before its scheduled Jan. 27 release date. I'm not about to provide any links to pirated music, but I hear that those so inclined shouldn't have much trouble finding this. Now, as it happens, I already wrote a review of Working on a Dream for the issue of EW that will hit stands on Jan. 26. So with these songs already spreading like wildfire, I just want to make it known that this album is absolutely one worth waiting to buy on release day.

I love Working on a Dream. I say that based on hearing the proper CD, not some random digital rip, and I have a feeling most Springsteen fans will come to agree. It's very different in tone from the last two records Springsteen has made with the E Street Band: Personal rather than political, subtle gestures rather than grand statements. What's more, you can just tell it's the kind of album that will reveal more of itself the more you listen. I can't wait to really dig into Working on a Dream in the weeks and months after I get my hands on a physical copy.

All that said, have any of you caved to temptation and heard the leak yet? If so, what's your favorite song so far? Mine at the moment is "My Lucky Day," which those of you who are staying strong and waiting for the actual release date (bravo!) can enjoy in the Boss' official promo video below. It's a real sugar rush of a tune in the best way, don't you think?

Sounds like Blue has sand in his panties....

Bruce writes about everyday life. How many of us have had crushes on women in the supermarket?
Brilliant.

I think Blue needs his ears checked- bruce is as relevant as ever.

I have downloaded the album and I love every song in it!=) but I'm a true Bruce Springsteen fan so I will still buy the album as soon as it comes out to support my musical hero! Keep it rocking Bruce!

Mike:

How grand of you to post a comment without resorting to name-calling. Congrats on that as you make it sound like this must have been a tough urge to fight.
Predictably though, you seem quite unable to differentiate between crass mass-marketing tactics and bona fide artistic decisions. Or perhaps you just choose to turn a blind eye to Bruce's morphing into a corporate lackey who will seemingly do just about anything to ship out a few more units.Of course, it is your prerogative to be willfully oblivious to simple facts.
I'm also willing to believe that your enthused reference to " the ceremony in front of the Lincoln Memorial " was only made in jest. As for the " sold-out tours ", I'm assuming you're talking about the last euro leg of Magic and not its US counterpart. How about the SSB fiasco in the US ? Yes, Bruce sells out venues in specific markets but he certainly does not sell out entire tours. Oh and what are those great new bands Bruce so profoundly influenced ?

Cheers!

I heard quite a bit of it and I love it. When I read Springsteen blogs, most people are really loving it, but there's always a few who are putting it down. To " Blue", I'd say that to call him irrelevant is to ignore everything going on around you. The ceremony in front of the Lincoln memorial, the super bowl, sold out tours, increasing influence with younger bands, etc. He is more relevant than ever! Your venom is unbecoming but you are entitled to your opinion. I won't resort to name calling. Try going to blogs that like your favorite bands and say something positive. You'll feel better. Till then, I can't wait till the new album!

Anyone with a modicum of taste and common sense will tell you this album is utter garbage.
Bruce is embarrassing himself with this pathetic collection of B-sides but most importantly, he is compromising his legacy.
Sadly, this goes hand in hand with Bruce's recent decisions to sell out as much and as obviously as possible. Why doing now the opposite of what you stood for your entire career ?
While some brainwashed fans will always praise anything the guy puts out and find excuses for his most appalling marketing moves, the fact that Bruce made himself irrelevant and betrayed his ever-shrinking fan base, simply can't be ignored.

I'm really torn about this disc after listening to the tracks a couple times. While some of the songs are great songs for this stage of Bruce's career ("My Lucky Day," "Life Itself"), I just don't know what to make of a lot of these. "Queen of the Supermarket?" Really? I thought the title would be some sort of analogy, but it really is about a woman at the supermarket. Hmm... I'm really hoping that the disc will grow on me when I get to hear it in CD-quality, but this may be the first Springsteen album that doesn't get loaded onto my iPod in its entirety.

Sugar rush is the perfect description, that is one happy song! Can't wait for the album, I hope he tours in support of it!

Haven't understood a single lyric from a song he has done in years. The guy is becoming Bob Dylan. He just mumbles.

Boy Vozick, you are making quite a big deal over downloading a leaked album. It's not exactly like smoking crack you know. If I was actually a fan of Springsteen, I'd download it in a heartbeat.

Addendum: I just realized your link above is to my blog post -- that's about the last thing I expected. Sorry about the link repeat in my comment.

My initial thoughts here: http://blogs.townonline.com/Springsteen/?p=7072
Bottom line: I will always take a Springsteen effort in which he seems to have followed his muse and turned out something inspired over any attempt to recreate the “Darkness” glory years. He’s older, we’re older, and Working on a Dream is something new and different and nostalgic at the same time — just like us.

Maybe he'll make this a Walmart exclusive.
