'SNL' + NPH = OMG

Jan 5, 2009, 03:00 PM | by Whitney Pastorek

Categories: Inappropriate Crushes, Saturday Night Live, Television, Things That Are Awesome!

Here's a sparkling reason to go on living until Saturday, PopWatchers: Neil Patrick Harris will be hosting his first Saturday Night Live Jan. 10! I can think of no one better. Aside from being up for a Golden Globe this weekend for his work on How I Met Your Mother, Harris is consistently one of the most entertaining fellows on TV -- we don't just hand out those EOTY awards to chimps, people -- and he is a trained theater professional, which means he should be right at home in the live format. I expect magic, both literal and metaphorical. Seriously. Like, doves and bunnies and stuff. You hear me, Harris? DOVES AND BUNNIES.

Also: Musical guest Taylor Swift! She's so good live! Yaaaaay...

(Did that seem forced? Dammit, I'm trying.)

Anyway, check out my recent video chat with Harris below, and then use the comments to talk about how awesome NPH is and/or suggest other people you'd like to see make their SNL hosting debut in 2009.

I haven't seen this yet, but my dream would be to have Justin Timberlake show up and have the two impersonate each other, much like Dana Carvey and Dennis Miller did back in the 80's.

My dream host would be Johnny Depp (never happen, I know) with The Magnetic Fields as a musical guest (ditto).

Clint Sun, Jan 11, 2009 at 12:53 AM EST

Taylor Swift was HORRIBLE on SNL! She seemed confused and an Avril wannabe instead of a cuntry act.

Brian Tue, Jan 6, 2009 at 02:39 PM EST

I had no idea who Taylor Swift was (I thought she might be an "Idol" alum) until I TiVo'd the CMT Crossroads she did with Def Leppard (I played "Hysteria" on repeat every day for over a year 1987-1988). I thought she sounded great with them. It's just a shame she won't be singing "Photograph" on SNL.

Julie Tue, Jan 6, 2009 at 01:14 PM EST

I LOVE NPH!!!! HE IS THE BEST AND FUNNIEST!!! PUT HIM ON SNL!

queen of disrepair Tue, Jan 6, 2009 at 11:54 AM EST

I think NPH would be an excellent guest co-host of Weekend Update. Wigg and NPh taking off on "Revolutionary Road" would also be delightful.

rockgolf Tue, Jan 6, 2009 at 10:56 AM EST

This ep will be legen- wait for it - DARY!

Amanda Tue, Jan 6, 2009 at 10:25 AM EST

I Love NPH!! I would also like to see John Krasinski do it and Jason Segel, he has a movie coming out soon and HIMYM so I think he should do it too.

BGW Tue, Jan 6, 2009 at 10:09 AM EST

Blerg. I have plans that night. :(

jen Tue, Jan 6, 2009 at 03:54 AM EST

O_O NO. WAY. and i was just wondering who was gonna be hosting the first show back, and now i find out i'm in for this treat? nice....very nice. =)

Luisa Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 11:15 PM EST

NPH!!! YESSS!!! This totally makes my week. I spent my sickly last week of vacation binging on HIMYM DVDs, and now I'm reallllly missing my Barney Stinson fix. This'll be good.

Stanislav Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 10:54 PM EST

Arnett would be a great host if he could be able to do a sketch with Amy. Perhaps if he hosted she'd come back for that episode.

Jeanine Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 10:49 PM EST

NPH! NPH! Spent much of the holidays watching "Dr. Horrible" over and over again-- very excited for SNL. As for who else should host...I've long wanted to see Daniel Radcliffe on the show, especially after seeing him on Extras. Now that he's in town doing Equus, I was hoping he'd get the SNL gig sometime this spring?

Crystal Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 10:05 PM EST

yay! setting DVR now...as for hosts, before the AD movie comes out they should have JB or WA host. Or the whole cast, if possible (not sure if that's "allowed")

BuffyXO Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 09:38 PM EST

If you love NPH, then get the Dr. Horrible Sing-a-long Blog on DVD for "Commentary! The Musical." It is *almost* better than the blog itself.

kaci Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 09:32 PM EST

Sadie, that would be awesome to see Lady A on there... they are amazing! As for host... I would love to see David Boreanez (sp??) or Jay Baruchel.

Farva Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 07:18 PM EST

Definatly Zack Levi or Krazinski, but what about Josh Jackson, has Cloony hosted yet?

CandyMaize Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 06:36 PM EST

This is worth staying up to watch SNL!!

David Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 06:13 PM EST

I'd love to see the great Steve Coogan host an episode or Phillip Seymour Hoffman.

Josie Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 05:51 PM EST

I've been freaking out about this ever since I read it on TWoP! NPH is awesome. Suit up!

Dr. Zaius Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 05:22 PM EST

Just give me John Krasinski and a non-rap artist, I'll watch. Not even the biggest fan of his, but he has great comedic timing and he could become huge if he didn't just do The Office and bad rom-coms.

Ep Sato Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 05:17 PM EST

I liked NPH the second he guest voiced on the Simpsons. His stints on Harold & Kumar and of How I met your mother made me fans. His stupid, yet really catchy singalong blog made me a worshipper. How can one bloke be so gosh darned talented?

This should be a great episode

PS Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 05:17 PM EST

I think I'll ffw'd through the squinty, robotic not a real bone in her body Swift.

Smoochie Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 05:15 PM EST

This has potential. Can I help?

John W Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 05:14 PM EST

DOVES AND BUNNIES?

More like cats & dogs living together! Mass hysteria!

Shannon Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 05:08 PM EST

I LOVE HIM this is so exciting!

Nick Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 04:47 PM EST

I'd like to see Michael Cera host with musical guest Paramore.

Elena Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 04:44 PM EST

I also second Zachary Levi. And Adam Baldwin! Actually, any Whedon alum on SNL would be beyond amazing...

Elena Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 04:41 PM EST

Well, Jon Hamm was on last year, and that was one of the funniest episodes and made me appreciate Mad Men all the more. I am suprised NPH hasn't hosted yet! He is comedic and acting gold in a bottle. I'd love to see someone from The Big Bang Theory, like Jim Parsons, or Zachary Quinto (just 'cause he's awesome, and in the Star Trek redux!), or David Boreanaz (like, in my dreams...).

Kate Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 04:41 PM EST

YAY!!! This made my day! :-)

Also, I 2nd (or 3rd) the request for John Krasinski to host. I'd also like to see Zachary Levi.

Rahul Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 04:40 PM EST

OMG, this is awesome. Let's hope the writers show up with some funny material for once.

Allie Beth Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 04:39 PM EST

I'm in love with NPH!! Can't wait 'till Saturday!

mcbridefan Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 04:33 PM EST

Hugh Jackman -- hey I'd rather see him on SNL then DWTS!

Winona Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 04:19 PM EST

I'm praying for a Doogie Howser sketch with Seth Meyers as Vinnie and Kristen Wiig as Wanda.

Moxie Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 04:16 PM EST

OMG!!! This is the best news I've heard all day! I haven't seen Taylor Swift on anything, for like, FOREVER!! At the very least it's been hours...or possibly minutes. And you're totally right, Whitney, she is a-MAAAAAA-zing live! :::::HELP! I think my eyes got stuck in the back of my head, I rolled them with such force!::::

BJohnson Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 04:13 PM EST

OMG is right. It would have been awesome if he could have sang a song from the sing a long blog. Hey, it's after hours...any chance of a naked man pose??

Sadie Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 04:11 PM EST

This is just proof that Lorne Michaels is reading my PopWatch comments because NPH was on my SNL wish list (from the silly Robert Pattinson post). Now we just need to work on getting John Krasinski on there with Lady Antebellum as musical guests. Squee! NPH is nothing but awesomeness.

Aaron Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 04:05 PM EST

Dream hosts: Kristen Bell and James McAvoy. I think both would be just as funny as the cast around them and would be game for anything.

Jim Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 03:54 PM EST

My expectations are as high for this as they were for Paul Rudd, maybe higher.

PeterBilt The Nature Boy Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 03:52 PM EST

Rhonda, I too would like to see Eva Mendes host snl. But probably for more pig headed reasons. She is funny though.

LL Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 03:45 PM EST

That is such happy news. I saw a man hit a woman (on purpose) on the back of the head on the subway this morning; this news has now restored my faith in humanity.

allie Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 03:34 PM EST

Best news I have heard all day on this craptastic excuse for a return to the classroom!!! I love, Love, LOVE both of them. It's going to be legen- wait for it- dary! (Oh come on, someone had to say it!)

Miss B Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 03:33 PM EST

Hmm. I might actually watch SNL for the first time since the election stuff ended.

Laura M. Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 03:32 PM EST

NPH = Awesome. There really isn't more to say than that. And yes, I'm totally watching SNL this Saturday.

S Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 03:29 PM EST

I too can not wait! Don't disappoint me SNL!

Annie Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 03:26 PM EST

Awesome! I just hope SNL can come up with material worthy of him.

angela Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 03:22 PM EST

Yeah!!! NPH rocks. I would also love to see Ricky Gervais or John Krasinski host. (I might be a little into The Office)

Peter B Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 03:21 PM EST

Wow. This is terrific news! (about NPH....sorry Taylor)

I have always thought that Neil is consistently great - whether doing comedy on tv or on the silver screen. I saw him perform on Broadway and have seen how good he is live. And Dr Horrible's Sing A Long Blog, in which he played the title character, was one of the best products to have been released in 2008.

I truly hope SNL doesn't suck the comedic magic out of him.

Elizabeth Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 03:19 PM EST

I think I just passed out...

Rhonda Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 03:16 PM EST

I want to see Eva Mendes host SNL. She can be hilarious. I think Keira Knightley would do good, too. And Jimmy Fallon has yet to return for a hosting gig...

melissa Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 03:15 PM EST

i'm definitely going to dvr this!
