'Nip/Tuck' is back: Sex! Genital enhancement! Kanye West!

Niptuckpremiere_l I'm pretty psyched to have Nip/Tuck back after such a long (writers' strike-induced) hiatus. The one-hour-and-four-minute episode packed in all the slick, soapy goodness I've come to expect from my favorite FX show (sorry Slezak, I haven't seen Damages yet). First, we finally find out what happens to Sean after being stabbed by his crazy former manager. Not only does he live (phew), though confined to a wheelchair for the time being, he's back to doing what he does best -- judging others (through the guise of teaching). Christian, meanwhile, has a life-threatening scare of his own: He's diagnosed with breast (yes, breast) cancer. Liz really pulls through for him with much-needed support, and I love watching Liz and Christian's dysfunctional but touching relationship. Despite all the drama, the episode ends in pure Nip/Tuck form -- sex with hot chicks.

I had to keep in mind that this wasn't a season premiere, though I was still a little bit disappointed when they created and pretty much solved a major problem in the course of a single episode (what will the rest of the episodes be about if they don't leave any loose ends to tie up?). Then I watched the upcoming scenes -- do my eyes deceive me (likely), or was that LIZ AND CHRISTIAN having sex? Is the father of the promising young Indian doctor really asking his own son to perform penis enlargement surgery on him? -- and all was right again.

Were you satisfied with the mid-season premiere? Was it a good episode, or are you just really glad Nip/Tuck's back and can't wait to see what happens next? Do you think the long break affected the quality of the show? What are you excited to see this season? And could they have picked a better song than Kanye's ''Flashing Lights'' to set the upcoming scenes to? (That's a trick question, because the answer is obviously no.)

Does anyone know where I can find and download the pre-season commercial video clip "flashing lights" performed by Kanye West. I found a great you tube version, but cannot download from there. :( Sean

MissingBlogs Sun, Feb 22, 2009 at 12:31 PM EST

Ummmm why haven't there been anymore Nip/Tuck recaps since this one? Anyone...Anyone

Regina Mon, Jan 12, 2009 at 05:10 PM EST

I want there to be hot boys to end the show with Julia. Can she please have a mid life crisis! Don't get me wrong I love seeing the "boys" butts too but give Julia and Kimber some time too. By the way when is Kimber going to get a new hairstyle. She has had that since the start of the show it seems. What happened to Christians hair it use to be so nice. Time for some work boys!

salemskeeper Mon, Jan 12, 2009 at 02:17 AM EST

I thought Nip/Tuck was a pretty good episode. While I was already expecting Sean to survive and even be in a wheelchair(thanks to pics in Life & Style) I didn't see it coming about Christians' breast cancer! Just the kind of shock I expect from this show. I am concearned whwere they're going to take it next. It almost seems like they've done everything. I really ask what will be next? I'm happy to hear Kayne's coming(whoohoo!) and I'm hoping Rosie ODonnel comes back. Not holding my breath for right now...

Lori Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 11:56 PM EST

N/T premiere was better than I thought it would be. It hasn't been the same since the 'Slasher' storyline. I hope they send Julia back to NYC for good. If I have to hear her whine, "Chrissss-ti-annnne" one more time, I may give up the show altogether. I loved that Sean was faking his need of the wheelchair. Bring back Gina!

Seann Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 10:44 PM EST

Nip/Tuck is that show that knows how to be so awful that you are glued. The opening scene with Colleen Rose going into the office to stab Sean were incredibly chilling, and the Kanye song in the program is incredible. Liz and Christian sleeping together?? Classic Nip/Tuck freakiness. I will not miss any episodes. It's appointment television.

Laura Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 01:24 PM EST

This show can do no wrong in my eyes. As one of my friends said, "It's bad and it's wild!"
I personally don't think the show suffered from the seemingly-endless break, but I wouldn't be surprised if some fans just gave up on it.
Also, I am sooooo happy that Christian and Julia are no longer an item. That was a nightmare. Christian is at his best when he is being the man slut that he is.
PS Did anyone notice how Shawn is faking his paralysis?

barbara Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 09:33 PM EST

Does anybody know where I could watch the full episode.. I missed it

bb Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 06:22 PM EST

There were way too many commercials. I don't buy that this is still season 5, regardless of what they call it. I'm anxious to find out what happens between Julia, Eden and Olivia. There didn't seem to be any scenes of Eden in the previews so I hope they just don't sweep it under the rug. And I'm glad that they established that the 'future episode' back in S4 was only a dream.
I kind of wish they'd kill Kimber off. She hasn't been important to the show since the 4th season.

Renee Patten Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 04:37 PM EST

Im soo confused!! lol what the hell is he doing walking around? is it another dream?lol

Viastar Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 04:31 PM EST

AND THE COMMERCIALS! THANK GOD FOR DVR!

Viastar Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 04:29 PM EST

Love this show but wish it would go back to when the writers used to take actual true stories from the news and create a show around it, a la the obese women who's skin had grown into the sofa and they had to hack the house down and take her, sofa and all, to the hospital on a truck! Gruesome!

To Sonia Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 10:49 AM EST

Not to be mean, but that "retarded" looking nipple that Christian had was from surgery. That's what happens when you have surgery - you get a scar. And male breast cancer is not wierd, it happens and men can die from it. I personally thought it was a perfect choice for Christian's character - a man surrounded by breasts in both his personal and professional life.

Alex Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 10:43 AM EST

L, I'm pretty sure they addressed the possibility of Christian being HIV positive a couple years ago, when Gina told him. He had a psychological crisis, eventually had the test, it was negative. (although how unlikely is that??!)
I am so glad this show is back! I have to hand it to the writers and actors - as flawed as these characters are I just love them and hope things turn out okay for them in the end. I personally prefer when the show gets away from the over-the-top plotlines and focuses more on the relationships and the characters' personal demons. This episode definitely was more in that vein, but I know the crazy stuff will come!

Nanci Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 10:31 AM EST

Yes, this recap was WAY TOO BRIEF! I read these EW recaps for depth and insight (and yes, a few laughs here and there), none of which happened this time. Also, "Matt's" looks have always creeped me out, but I was happy to see the actor is finally growing into his looks a bit.

Lyric Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 07:48 AM EST

I saw a few episodes before but after trying some of the other dreck on TV I think I will watch the full season this year. Liked the ep but a few complaints. Yeah the commercials, but I have a DVR so I will survive. I like the music but it is TOO LOUD! I found it drowned out the dialogue sometimes. Too distracting.

Kristy Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 05:55 AM EST

I am so glad they are back. THe most important relationship to me on the show is between Sean and Christian. They epitomize the whole bromance thing. I hope Nip/tuck stays on for a long time.

Tom Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 04:36 AM EST

The whole "Christian being cured in one episode" isn't true at all. He's going to need chemotherapy, just as he mentioned to Liz when they discussed who would take care of Wilbur during that time. It's going to be a bit before Christian gets over the cancer, I expect to see it pop up for a while.

Sean being able to walk again is pretty simple. He is taking it slower than needed to walk again because he still hasn't gotten over the attack (shown through that dream). Some part of me REALLY wants Colleen Rose to have survived that attack though, Sharon Gless is just too good of an actress. Remember, it's Nip/Tuck, unless you see a body, there's a fair chance of return (Escobar, Bobbolit, etc).

The one thing that left me hanging is the unresolved Julia storyline. Did Eden confess when she found out Julia was awake? We at least got a snippit from Matt on what was happening.

Also, the Kimber/Ram/Eden plot was left out, but seeing Kimber, the baby, and Christian together was interesting...

jen Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 01:31 AM EST

i'm just happy it's back after SO long. i miss all the delicious twistedness. :P

lee Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 12:01 AM EST

I'm ecstatic the show is back. Fine acting and writing and pushing the limits. Ryan knows what he's doing with this show. It's adult and fun. The 'commentary' is dead on.

tonisha Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 09:32 PM EST

Damages is good also. We should get a recap for that as well (for the dedicated fans that watch it). FX has the best writers in my opinion.

tonisha Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 09:30 PM EST

I thought this was a really good episode-true to Nip/Tuck form...a bit much packed into one ep, but still good. Someone made an interesting point about them using the Kanye song, given what happened with his mother. But I thought the song went well with it. I also thought the review was way too short. I also thought Sean's being able to walk at the end would have been mentioned. Or was he dreaming?

JPhalange Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 09:03 PM EST

The song after Backstabbers was Stop Me by Mark Ronson feat. Danel Merriweather.

MC Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 08:51 PM EST

Very disappointed, it's just not interesting anymore. I'm hoping it will get better but I think it's jumped the shark.

ks Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 08:08 PM EST

Welcome back guys! Oh How I have missed you.

Marlon Wallace Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 06:16 PM EST

that's not the song?

Kathy Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 04:53 PM EST

Song following Backstabbers was Barabajagal by Donovan

supergrover Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 04:42 PM EST

I love how they casually dispensed with that godawful flash-forward episode from a while back by positioning it as a dream of Sean's. Nice work backing out of that awkward corner, writers!

L Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 04:39 PM EST

Am I mistaken (on the season finale episode) didn't Christian have unprotected sex with the one women who fell off the balcony and died...didn't she have AIDS? Why would they not have the "AIDS" be the medical issue Christian has to face and not breast cancer?? I haven't watched the episode on teevo yet, but after reading all these posts, I'm already disappointed.

Pete Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 04:13 PM EST

I was laughing out loud during the dual mammograms last night. The nurse says, "you will feel some pressure." Liz does not react and Christian flips out because it pinched him. Typical Christian. Anyone else catch that?

Sonia Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 04:04 PM EST

I waited FOREVER to see the season premiere and was SOO excited that it finally arrived.. But then I was disappointed. I expected more.. I wanted more! Too much crazy sh*t happened in the premiere.. Sean being attacked & "crippled".. Christian diagnosed w/breast cancer - that was too wierd! And the retarted looking nipple! What I must say is I liked what I saw in the lil previews of what's to come. It showed some exciting stuff.. You know the good ol' fashion NIP TUCK!!!! I guess we'll all just have to wait and see.

Beth Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 03:52 PM EST

OMG--Great show last night. Loved the scene with Christian & Liz talking about Wilbur ( Christian looked soooo hot ) Can't wait until next week!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Mel Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 03:41 PM EST

As seems to happen every time Christian sleeps with someone out of his normal realm, Liz will probably end up pregnant! LOL

P.S.: They discussed Christian's reconstruction before his surgery, so he won't be "unpretty" for very long.

Donna Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 03:22 PM EST

The boys are back, loved it, loved it, loved it. Can't wait for next week. But I wish they kept Sharon Gless on longer she was a real nut job.

Gigohead Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 03:06 PM EST

I missed my boys. I'm glad they are back! It was a good episode. I'm not to crazy with Christian and this whole male breast cancer situation. Why must all the ailments befallen these people! Ryan Murphy needs to chill with the disease of the week scripts.

A Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 03:00 PM EST

What is this review. Too short and terrible. Please explain Sean being able to walk at the end.

Marlon Wallace Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 02:57 PM EST

loved the show, but what was that song during the opening that followed "Backstabbers"?

Alex Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 02:51 PM EST

I was surprised that Kanye would allow the song to be used for the promo since his mother died from complications after cosmetic surgery.

Jane in PA Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 02:47 PM EST

Loved this episode! I was screaming when Sean stabbed Sharon Gless! I hope the break lets the series get back to when it was best during season 3. Can't wait to see how the Christian/Liz relationship plays out.

barb Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 02:20 PM EST

I was very pleased with last night's episode! I was just as glad to see that Matt isn't as scary as he was last season-eye brows included. This season looks promising!

Kizzy Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 02:19 PM EST

AMAZING!!! I really love me some Christian & Matt. I think Matt has the sexiest eyes ever. Christian helps me decide to stay away from good looking doctors (smile). Great episode - - - -

Kayro Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 01:48 PM EST

the breat cancer issue is NOT done. Did you see how misshapen Christian's chest was. For someone as vain as Christian, he's going to have major self-image issues, just like a woman would. And yes, he was wearing a vest while doing the woman he brought home.

tlaw Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 01:48 PM EST

Yes Christian was wearing a vest. I can't believe that he was thinking of an exam with that little hottie on top!!

tlaw Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 01:47 PM EST

Yes Christian was wearing a vest. I can't believe that he was thinking of an exam with that little hottie on top!!

mildred Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 01:40 PM EST

"Magnificant opening season episode". I can't wait to see what the amazing writers come up with next. The song selection was brilliant. Ditto the tracking shots. The future teasers look shocking yet intrigueing.

joeinmemphis Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 01:12 PM EST

Nip/Tuck is so damn good! That opening.....I had to cover my eyes during the stabbing! Sharon Gless...hate to see you go you were a hell of a psycho!

Kurt Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 01:07 PM EST

The music was just excellent throughout. The show worked for me last night. I wasn't even flipping during commercials. And NBC wants to compete against shows like this at 10:00 p.m. with Jay Leno? Good luck. I predict a rise in the ratings of FX and other cable networks, and they will be topping NBC within a year.

sally1018 Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 12:56 PM EST

I loved Kanye's song in the opening and i thought it was a very good episode. I can't wait for Damages tonight!

Twist Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 12:53 PM EST

And oh, Nip/Tuck ended for me at the close of season 4. Ugh, moving to Hollywood - they jumped the shark! Didn't Ryan Murphy once say Never to H'WOOD?!

Twist Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 12:49 PM EST

LOVED, loved, loved the opening scene! Was screaming for Sean to kill the CRAZY!

tcrab Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 12:48 PM EST

Loved the episode, but the one hour and FOUR minute running time was a joke. You'd think that you'd get a littel extra content. But when the scenes ended and the commercials should have started, we had to stare at a black blank screen for an eternity before the commercial actually started. There's your 4 minutes of special content right there.

Sex In Vest Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 12:34 PM EST

Did Christian when he was having sex from behind..wearing a black vest..i think my eyes are playing tricks ..my wife thinks it was just a shadow..any confirmation

Gretchen Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 12:27 PM EST

You didnt mention that Sean can actually walk!!! He's playing up the wheelchair b/c he's afraid to go to surgery and likes being the teacher. Also, I was thinking the same thing about them solving Christian's breast cancer within one ep.

Lynn in the Desert Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 12:25 PM EST

Loved it. Loved the quick shots ala Liz gets a mammo/sees the Doc/all clear/Christian mentions his lump/Christian gets a mammo (thank you, brilliant writers, I have been wishing that on my male gyno for YEARS!)/Christian sees the Doc/bad news...
The post-bar hot chicks sex scene was hysterically funny...I just KNEW Christian would perform an exam on his "date" and she'd be offended...perfect example of human nature...fear rears its ugly head from both parties...
The best scene was the Mirror Reflections one, though...Sean almost ADMIRING his scars, with pride, Christian devastated by his, with shame...and I think Sean can walk, he's just milking it, but I am intrigued as to WHY...he's a pig anyway, which is what makes the show so great..
The teasers were amazing...don't call me Tues. nights...sooooo busy...check in Wed. mornings...

NipTucker Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 12:25 PM EST

So the flash forward episode is now confirmed to be just a dream of Sean's? I guess that means characters can die now.

NipTucker Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 12:24 PM EST

So the flash forward episode is now confirmed to be just a dream of Sean's? I guess that means characters can die now.

pablo Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 12:17 PM EST

es,para mi,una de las mejores serier de los ultimos tiempos.sus historias pueden pasar del drama a la comedia en un abrir y cerrar de ojos.espero que sigan asi.

Matt S. Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 11:52 AM EST

Great episode for certain. I also gotta give props to the show producers for using Mark Ronson's "Stop Me" immediately after the O'Jays ended. That little quick flash to the CD player with the song changing was just artsy, and the opening stretch was great. I'm still not sure if Sean walking was another dream/a head trip/or just proved he was in the chair because metaphorically he felt crippled mentally and emotionally by his experience, and manifested it physically

Chris Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 11:51 AM EST

Great show. I agree that the music person deserves major props. Can't wait for more!

Lisa Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 11:40 AM EST

I agree that a full TV Watch is needed for this show. Didn't there used to be one? Anyway, great episode. So glad it is back!

Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 11:34 AM EST

I am glad they are back, and loved it. Now Damages tonite, FX loves me!

Maddy Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 11:33 AM EST

Please tell me this will actually become a TV Watch recap at some point and not stay a PopWatch blog! Nip/Tuck is too outrageous to fit a recap into only 3 paragraphs! Anyone agree??

Amy Leigh Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 11:14 AM EST

No comment about the fact that Sean can actually WALK. I get that he's scared but to lie to the people you love like that. He just really annoys me sometimes. Anyways, I'm interested see how this season goes. When I saw the Christian/Liz preview scenes I was extremely shocked.

Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 11:13 AM EST

I loved The O'Jays "Back Stabbers" at the beginning of the show! Brilliant.

Christian's Next Bang Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 11:07 AM EST

Was that not the best opening to a show EVER in history?!?! I don't know what you people are talking about it was absolutely amazing!!! Wait until the genius behind this show reveals more every week! And by the way, whoever does the music for Nip/Tuck, is amazing! This is the best show ever and I can't wait to see more and more!

cajunsblues Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 11:07 AM EST

will there be an increase in wheelchair sales after this?

Bruno Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 10:57 AM EST

Did anyone else find Kimber trying to inject her baby with collagen hilarious in a "No They Didn't" kind of way? Seriously, she is a mess. And I also laughed at how she put huge shades on the baby too. She is crazy. Glad the show is back.

Belle Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 10:43 AM EST

Thanks for the heads up on the many commericals. I DVR the show and will watch/fast forward tonight.

craziemaxie Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 10:18 AM EST

LOVED IT LOVED IT!!!!!
Good to see the boys are back, My Tuesday's just got sexy!

Marie Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 09:57 AM EST

I whole heartedly agree with the commercial comment. They were never-ending. I will not be watching live anymore. But I do love this show!! Anything goes and I love that!! My boyfriend doesnt watch and only hears my stories and he was trying to sleep and rolled over and looked at me and I said "Christian has breast cancer" and he groaned in disgust and went back to sleep!! The reason I love this show is the reason he refuses to watch! One mans trash......

Jennifer Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 09:43 AM EST

Didn't like the Kanye song - the season that they set the teasers to the Goldfrapp song worked much better. And did I interpret Sean's waking-in-the-middle-of-the-night scene correctly? He's faking needing the wheelchair?

Mom of 3 Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 09:17 AM EST

I wasnt thrilled with the first episode but I am looking forward to the rest of the season. I need to know what is going to happen with Julia & her lesbiam lover & will her daughter (Eden) be jailed for her attempted murder. Also I hope they answer the question of Matt & his daughter. Last season Kimber & Ram wouldnt let him near his daughter now he is taking her to see her grandmother at the hospital? Welcome to Season 6!!

Sleepy in OHIO Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 08:52 AM EST

Was that the premiere? I must have missed it with the 40 MINUTES OF COMMERCIALS...WTF. MORE LIKE WEDDING WARS, DAMAGES AND SMIRNOFF BROUGHT TO YOU BY NIP /TUCK. I stayed up for that! I waited how many months for 20 minutes of a show and 40 minutes of commercials! Whose head at FX can I throw my remote at for that? I love that show...but I was so ticked off I had to stay up another hour to calm down... Then I realized it should have been called a lipo size premiere not supersized. AAARGHH!!!!!!!!!

Ur Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 08:31 AM EST

"Despite all the drama, the episode ends in pure Nip/Tuck form -- sex with hot chicks."

Exactly -- I was wondering what the hell happened to my favorite show and all its glorious fornication.

Then as soon as Sean asked where the bathroom was and the blonde wheeled him away, I knew everything was going to be okay.

Christina Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 07:53 AM EST

Did they bring Kimber back? She's my favorite character....what's going on with the Ram/Kimber/Eden tri-fecta relationship?
