'Mad Men' is coming back! Praise be to AMC.

Madmenjonhamm_l Ah, finally a pinch of good news for The Great Depression '09: Mad Men is coming back! A third season (set to premiere this summer) may seem like a no-brainer to readers of Entertainment Weekly, where we've been gaga for the Madison Avenue smokers' lounge since it debuted in 2007. But undying love doesn't always keep a show on the air (Exhibit B: the just barely DirecTV-rescued Friday Night Lights), especially when there's a contract dispute like the one between Mad Men producer Lionsgate and series creator Matthew Weiner (AMC head Charles Collier says he's optimistic about Weiner eventually coming on board).

I have to admit, I was a little put off at the beginning of season 2. I think after the first season (which I watched one-after-the-other from my DVR) I was just so pumped for it to come back that I sort of forgot that Mad Men is about slowly seeping into every pore, not blasting you in the face with an icy splash. Episodes end with a subtlety that sometimes takes me a couple days to realize how devastating it actually was (Don sending away his admiring daughter then collapsing on the bathroom toilet, silently peering at the man he saw staring back at him from the door mirror). I think what really hooked me on season 2 was how Don finally got some comeuppance. Betty (whose cold detachment is a bit too one-dimensional, for my taste) finally booted her cheating bread-winner, ostracizing him to the solitude of a sterile hotel room. As we saw Don lying on top of a shiny bedspread, missing his home, his kids, his life, I felt like we were growing ever closer to a vulnerability that he spends every smoking/drinking/car seat-humping moment to hide. I love Don as much as any other man, woman, and child with a pulse, and I don't enjoy it when he fails or hurts. But Mad Men is at its core about people struggling to deal with themselves and each other in a changing, unpredictable world, and it was satisfying in the second season to see some piper-paying after all the crap he's pulled.

Plus, how about that intense scene between Peggy and Pete they left us with? And don't even get me started on Joan -- I could watch an hour of Joan walking around the office delivering mail. Let's just hope they don't waste any time addressing that nastiness with her fiance. I don't like how that was left hanging. So how about it, PopWatchers? More Mad Men! YES! What did you love most about last season, and what do you want when it comes back?

Hey JJ peggy only had one child. I you look back at the flash back in season two when peggys sister and mom came to visit her in the hospital. Notice that her sister was very pregnant at the time. I think her sister had a child shortly after peggy had hers. Also after peggy had her child she was comitted because she had no memory of the child being born. Thats when Don finally found out where she was and came to see her and gave her his classic line " forget about it". You would think he was italian!!!

nana Mon, Apr 20, 2009 at 04:51 PM EST

i don't think peggy has had more than one baby. the scene in season two was a flashback. i think she was devastated by the experience of having the baby and was committed because she couldn't make a decision about what to do, how or whether to care for the baby, whether to go back to work, etc. after she helped don after his car accident, they flashed back to him visiting her in the hospital and telling her to get out of there and move forward, to just pretend it never happened.

BB Sun, Apr 5, 2009 at 11:35 PM EST

OMG, I agree with JJ Johnson, Peggy has had two kids and she is in denial!

JJ Johnson Sun, Apr 5, 2009 at 11:02 PM EST

Question: Did anyone else come to the conclusion, that Peggy has two childern? The scene with Peggy returning the vaccum had Peggy's sister telling her to say goodbye to the kids. Peggy opened the bedroom door and there were three kids in the room. A toddler was in the bed and there were two babies in cribs. The toddler said, "Goodnight Aunt Peggy".

I believe that the toddler and one of the babies to be Peggy's. The other baby is her sister's and her sister is raising all three as her own.

The reason behind this belief is because of two different episodes. One was because of Peggy's sister saying something about being committed or something like that. The other episode was a scene with Peggy in a hospital (Mental Hosp.) w/Don Draper telling her, she has to get herself out of there!

Sorry if this was hard to follow, but did anyone come to the conclusion that Peggy has had two kids and has a mental problem when it comes to acknowledging her contribution to the kids?

Other than Sports and News, I watch very little TV. But I got hooked on Mad Men when my college-age son and I were touring New Zealand. He downloaded the episodes on his ibook and we watched it every night in our B&B's. I didn't like it immediately, but now I can't wait for Season 3!

pauline Mon, Mar 23, 2009 at 11:26 PM EST

why is it taking so long for them to come back.... my winter has been so long.... come back mad men, come back!

marilynn koontz Tue, Feb 3, 2009 at 09:58 PM EST

Cannot believe what a long winter this has been without any Mad Men to watch! Everyone in St Louis is hooked and can't wait for Summer 09 premiere-how about some reruns in March09?

Barbara K Sun, Feb 1, 2009 at 05:15 PM EST

I'd quick my job if I could just to watch Mad Men over and over again..What more can I say other then I LOVE YOU MAN MEN..HURRAY BACK!!

Pashko Thu, Jan 15, 2009 at 10:25 PM EST

Thank God that the show will be coming back. Don is a madman ... sorry for the pun but I am now at peace.

Roberta Lipp Thu, Jan 15, 2009 at 08:40 PM EST

The actors' contracts for S3 have been signed for a little while, so AMC announcing this as news is probably just Golden Globes afterGlow. Nothing exciting for me about the return of Mad Men until the return of Weiner is secured, and I am as big a Mad Men fan as they come; I co-author Basket of Kisses, a blog devoted to the show. I won't breathe quite right until Matt is signed on.

julie Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 10:46 AM EST

Mad Men is the most well written show on television. Period. The actors are also amazing. While Betty does get on my nerves, I did enjoy the scene when she shot the neighbors pet birds...shotgun in hand, wearing her negligee, and cigarette hanging out of her perfectly lipsticked lips. So great! Don, my absolute favorite man, can do no wrong. I find it interesting how we all adore him eventhough he does what he does.. that is where the beauty in the whole show lies...it causes all to question our "Moral" views from a whole new perspective. Thank God there is going to be another season!! Can't wait!

Bob Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 08:42 AM EST

I can't say enough about this show similar to the rest here. The depth of the characters and how the show will continue to develop rather than speed up the drama simply for effect, really came through in the past season. I even started a website dedicated to talking about it, http://www.madmenchat.com

I just can't wait till the new season to get things rolling again - so many questions needing answers.

Lorna Rafness Mon, Jan 12, 2009 at 06:07 PM EST

I love everything about Mad Men but I have a question, has Peggy had more than one baby? What was she doing in the hospital in season two or was that a flashback?

mk Sat, Jan 10, 2009 at 08:28 PM EST

Most importantly, is Matthew Weiner staying with the show?

elr Sat, Jan 10, 2009 at 04:49 PM EST

I would just like them to repeat season 2 on television. When I was finally able to watch season 1 on dvd the second season was over with. I will definitely watch season 3 and I read all of the EW recaps but, it's just not the same as watching it.

groovygirl Sat, Jan 10, 2009 at 12:59 AM EST

This is by far the best show for me on television right now.Love MAD MEN, January Jones, the entire cast, the characters, their stories. This is what great TV was and is!

bec Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 11:48 PM EST

I agree with Hunter, I'm trying not to get too excited about S3 until I know for sure that Weiner will be back. I also agree with Bethann about Betty - she is not one dimensional at all! Her husband cheats on her and you expect her to act all happy about it? Please. Betty is one of the hardest roles on the show to play and JJ did it superbly week after week in S2. I hope she wins the golden globe for it.

Bethann Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 04:58 PM EST

I would agree that January Jones is NOT one-dimensional in her portrayal of Betty--rather, Betty is used to keeping all of her feelings hidden. She is, in fact, a female Don but she curtails her urges and pushes them into a diamond of resentment where Don acts out. I enjoy all of the women on this show. I really enjoyed watching Peggy start to stand up for herself in increasingly larger ways and when she told Pete of her pregnancy, I was blown away. And I was so crushed when Joan was reading the scripts and doing an amazing job as an advisor in the "TV department" when she was unceremoniously dumped for a man when it was clearly her female instinct that was so needed. In Season 3, I'd like to see even more with the core women but also I'd like to see the storyline with the closeted gay art director play out more. I should say that not only do I love this show, but my folks, who grew up in that era and never watch TV shows about it, love it just as much as I do.

Hunter Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 04:49 PM EST

I love Mad Men, but refuse to get excited about season 3 until Matthew Weiner signs on... Without him the show would be nothing!

E.P. Sato Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 02:31 PM EST

I've loved this show since day 1. IMHO, Mad Men is all about how Madison Avenue "sold" fake dreams. Draper's real specific about how the way we interpret love was just an idea invented to sell pantyhose.

Draper's picture-esque life, pretty wife and great job present us with an image that reminds me of Norman Rockwell paintings. You know, those that glossed over all the harsh realities (like segregation) to create a past that never existed? Madison Avenue's images portray what is not real, we see that Don Draper, his life and the man who he claims to be, also do not exist.

Season 2, IMHO, is all about reality crashing in. The 60's shattered the clean cut image of the 1950s without mercy. What's lost in history classes are the way these paradigm shifts impacted regular people.

In particular, I loved the way season 2 showed reactions to changes such as women and black men in the professional workforce. What's crazier is that this foreign world is us only 40 years ago.

anon Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 02:27 PM EST

While Don, Peggy, and Joan are amazing characters and actors (add me to the "January Jones is in over her head crowd -- she's okay, but not as fantastic as the others), part of my love of MM is the supporting cast: Roger, Sal, Ken, Francine, etc. They make every scene enjoyable!

Derelect TV Watcher Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 01:40 PM EST

Stable Boy hit the nail right on the head. Damn, I wish I had come up with the Norwegian thing first!!!!

Eric Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 01:36 PM EST

I started watching Mad Men after they did the season one marathon the week before Season 2 started. I was hooked and some days watched 3 or 4 episodes back to back. I'm not all the way through season 2 yet, but this is a great show and I am glad to have it back. I hope Weiner does come on board because I think if someone else takes over they may lose some of the subtlety and nuance he seems to bring to the table.

Stable Boy Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 01:14 PM EST

Betty's cold detachment is not one-dimensional, it's just that her people are Norwegian.
Oh, and Jon Hamm is dreamy.

Cornellian Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 12:40 PM EST

I would like Season 3 to feature Roger Sterling taking a baseball bat to that doctor who hurt Joan.

Miss Sassy Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 12:27 PM EST

jennab, you're wrong about January Jones. She's a superb actress. Couldn't you see how her subtleties shined in season 2?

jennab Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 12:24 PM EST

After the late, great Deadwood, I think Mad Men is the best thing on teevee...probably better written, acted, and directed than most feature films. LOVE Don and Peggy...have always complained about Jan Jones, her perf is very one-dimensional, she's in over her head, but is surrounded by such pro's. LOVE Joan...PLEASE give her a better storyline in season 3. BUT may not watch if Weiner doesn't return, as it will just be too heartbreaking!

kate Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 12:01 PM EST

The best thing about season two was Betty. Her whole breakdown this season was amazing to watch. If you consider subtlety one dimensional, then that's too bad for you. In season three I hope we see her deal with having another child and discovering feminism. I also want to know whether Joan actually married that awful doctor or not!

junior Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 11:58 AM EST

I'm excited "MM" is coming back, but I wanted to add that I'm always surprised when people love Don. I LOVE the show and partly because I hate Don. He's a colossal liar and is incredibly selfish deserves all the bad that comes to him. And I love watching it happen. The scene when he collapsed in Cali. was my fave of the season! More Draper damage please!

CeCe Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 11:43 AM EST

Kudos to Mike the reviewer. I've tried to explain this show and why I'm addicted to it. I think I'll just hand out this article from now on.

Oh and Jon Hamm, he's dreamy.

Elena Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 11:41 AM EST

If you had come back in a time machine and told me that I would one day be singing the praises of a Vincent Kartheiser, the snot-nosed brat Connor on the amazingly popular Angel, I would have sent you on your merry way.
That last scene between Peter and Peggy, the way that Peggy is so matter-of-fact about it, and the way that Peter's face slowly breaks over the course of the conversation, then that haunting shot of him with a shotgun...
Mad Men wins at life!

Anna Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 11:40 AM EST

Yay!! This is my second favorite show (next to Lost, of course). I wasn't worried about season 3 happening though. I thought it was pretty much a done deal.

siis Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 11:37 AM EST

The main concern is whether the show's quality will suffer without Matthew Weiner. If it does, it wont matter that it came back for another season.

vanessa Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 11:32 AM EST

im so glas is coming back as well as FNL best shows on T. V too bad people dont watch good tv and think dancing with the stars is a good show

jON Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 11:32 AM EST

Besides LOST, this is the most well-written, exceptional acted, professionally developed show on television, today. I think the push that Peggy, Joan, and Betty are getting, truly evolved the show. Mad Men?...Mad Women is more like it. Every charcter is developed so slowly and consisley, that byt the end of Season 2, you get angry when it ends.
I cannot wait for the Pete/Peggy story to continue, can't wait for someone to beat up Joan's fiance, and of course, for Don Draper to slowly, slowly break out of the disguise.

This is the new Sopranos. It should be on HBO.

vanessa Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 11:25 AM EST

i love this show so much! i love peggy i must admit i found her annoying at the beggining and she grew on me. also i was sad that joan didnt get the job after helping so much with the T.V. i can go on and on ... don draper yummm!

hms Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 11:21 AM EST

I'm so happy that Mad Men is coming back. I have to say that I agree with your assessment of Betty as well--I couldn't figure out if it was the character or the way January Jones plays her, but I always considered her the weakest of the actresses on the show (until the end of Season 2). I found Season 2 to be even more compelling than Season 1 and am so happy that it will be back. In addition to Friday Night Lights, it's the best show on TV (and yes that includes Lost, which I also love :).

snarky Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 10:48 AM EST

"I could watch an hour of Joan walking around the office delivering mail." Agreed - More JOAN!!!!!!!!!!
Best part of season 2 - they gay guy that cut Peggy's hair (love the new do and the way he came out of the closet) and Pete's whole storyline.

Ashley Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 10:40 AM EST

What a great summary of the amazing strengths of this show!

Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 10:32 AM EST

oh lord i love this show. don draper... yummy

bunnyslippers Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 10:14 AM EST

I would watch a full season of Don Draper reading the 1962 Manhattan phone book. LOVE ME SOME BAD, BAD, MEN!

Elizabeth Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 10:12 AM EST

Thanks for the picture. I won't get anything else accomplished today...

Miss Sassy Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 10:04 AM EST

I loved Betty's story the most in season 2. I agree she can be a bit one-dimensional and stoic, but her performance is so subtle and brilliant, like the way she so sweetly manipulated her friend to have an affair with the man from the stables, then acted so innocent when the friend called her on it, all the while enjoying it with an almost evil relish. It was refreshing to see how she fell apart after she kicked Don out of the house. So heartbreaking and so real. Who hasn't gone through something like that and ended up not getting dressed and drinking wine all day? And I can't wait to see what happens between Pete and Peggy. That last scene when she told him about the baby was just mesmerizing, how she told him with an almost unfeeling sense of liberation, and how his face gradually collapsed with every word she said. Honestly, this is the best thing that's ever been on TV.

John Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 09:57 AM EST

I'll agree with Jenn, I love Don and Peggy. It's easy to think with all his womanizing that Don is a misogynist, but as evidenced by Peggy (and his ability to articulate the chauvanistic into the humanistic), we see him clearly recognize potential in her and work to encourage it. I love that you could see how impressed he was when she finally called him Don, or his pride at her finally getting an office.

donner Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 09:56 AM EST

I was just thinking about this show the other day, fretting about it not returning next season, so I'm really glad its been renewed...after suffering the loss of other faves (Pushing Daisies), I am reluctant to get hooked into new shows, but I just love Mad Men...I have all the eps on disc and go back and rewatch them when i get the need to revisit...can't wait to see where they take us this summer...!

Derelect TV Watcher Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 09:55 AM EST

Hallelujah, there is a God after all! Or at least a person with a brain at AMC.

K Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 09:52 AM EST

I can't believe there was ever a question about the best show on TV coming back. It is beyond brilliant -- writing, performances, atmosphere. I a loved season two. It wasn't as tight as the first season, but it was very raw and emotional. I also hope they address what is going on with Joan right away because that was left so open ended, and I feel so bad for her. Also dying to know what happens with Peggy and Pete. And I can't wait to watch Betty pregnant, I hope they don't skip over that. Awesome show.

Snarf Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 09:51 AM EST

Haven't seen much of season 2 yet I'm afraid. Boo!

Marnie Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 09:44 AM EST

I cant imagine living in a world with no Don or Betty Draper and thankfully I wont have to. Also thanks for reminding not to delete mad men episodes of my dvr cause it feels like forever since the season finale.

Caraline Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 09:36 AM EST

Was this ever in doubt??? I am experiencing retrograde anxiety ... I knew Matt's contract was up, but I never knew there was doubt about whether the show would be back.

jason Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 09:29 AM EST

This was announced back in October!

http://spoilertv.blogspot.com/2008/10/mad-men-renewed-for-3rd-season.html

What gives Ausiello?

Jenn Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 09:22 AM EST

I LOVE Mad Men. It's one of the best shows on TV, but they ned to sign Matt Weiner because he is a huge part of the show. My favorite scene of last season was when Peggy woke up in the hospital and Don was sitting there. I love the Don/Peggy relationship.

Dawn Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 09:15 AM EST

soooooooooooooooo excited!
