Kelly Clarkson's 'My Life Would Suck Without You' is released. And it rocks!

Jan 13, 2009, 12:12 PM | by Henry Goldblatt

Categories: Music, Snap Judgment, Things That Are Awesome!

A few days ago we were tantalized by a 30-second clip of Kelly Clarkson's new single, "My Life Would Suck Without You", and now New York radio station z100.com (among other places) has the full version. And wow, does it deliver -- it's wilder than Drew Barrymore's hair at the Golden Globes. "Suck" is a driving, pulsing, "get out of your chair and dance around the room pronto" anthem to love, contrition, and blissful co-dependence. As Kelly sings: "I know that I have issues, but you're really messed up too/Either way I found out, I'm nothing without you". Plus, there's a totally kicking guitar solo. Check out the full song below and let us know what you think. Is it everything you want out of a Kelly Clarkson song? And for all of you conspiracy theorists out there, do you think her people planned to leak it on the same day that season 8 of American Idol debuts on Fox?

I think some of u take yourselves waay too seriously. Just enjoy the music, will ya?

DP Mon, Jan 26, 2009 at 04:07 PM EST

Conspiracy? How about marketing obviously put forth by Sony Music Entertainment, who owns Kelly (and all other top 10 American Idol finalists), why on earth wouldn't they do that?

No to Chris Sligh Mon, Jan 26, 2009 at 12:33 AM EST

The single's been #1 on iTunes for the last five days, and the thing's just gonna keep on growing - so all u haters can suck my big fat #$%&!

Yay for the triumphant return of Kelly Clarkson, finally an empowering female artist whose talent comes first, not her attention grabbing antics (I'm talking to you Britney). Not only is the song awesome, but I think this is just a taste of what is come from her upcoming album and I LOVE IT!

Katie Wed, Jan 21, 2009 at 11:13 PM EST

GO KELLY! WOO! :) Kelly, you rock, and you always will rock! And by the way, it is ridiculus that people can compare Kelly Clarkson to Katy Perry. They are on completely different levels! Let's face it, Katy will never be anywhere near Kelly's level of awesome-ness! I'll be first in line to buy your 4th album Kelly!

Tue, Jan 20, 2009 at 11:39 PM EST

AMAZING! its such a good song it really shows kellys diversity in music

i also thought it was wierd coz like a day before i heard it i was thinking to myself "what happened 2 kelly clarkson" but i guess the wait was worth it

Preston Mon, Jan 19, 2009 at 03:38 PM EST

Kelly Clarkson's new single is HOT! I like the energy in this song. It's more of a continuation of Since U Been Gone, but a little more apologetic. I think she's trying to get back her shine before Katy Perry steals her thunder. Yes,Katy, you're red hot, but honey, Kelly was doing this no nonsense style before you, so sit back for a second and let her take her pop rock crown back! This song is going to be Top 10, top 5, Number One and so forth! The "suck" in the title is true Kelly, what she really feels in the song!

Preston Mon, Jan 19, 2009 at 12:52 PM EST

No, I don't think it was a coincidence that Kelly Clarkson's label wanted it released on the same week that Idol debuted its new season. It's been over 1 1/2 years since we heard new music from Clarkson and she wants to get her new song and album out there (while we're still listening to last year's music and albums). And--get this, a radio station was playing some of Kelly's old hits last week just to build up the new single. Since U Been Gone and Behind those Hazel Eyes. They hadn't played the new single yet, but smart move to build up the excitement.

vince Mon, Jan 19, 2009 at 12:18 PM EST

LOVE ITTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Kelly Rocks!!!! you go girl!
can't wait to hear the whole album

Mike Mon, Jan 19, 2009 at 03:06 AM EST

I'm still shaken by the comment that Pink's WHO KNEW sounds just like SINCE U BEEN GONE... Not only do I disagree I wonder if u really listened to either. Who Knew is a reflective look at lost love, SUBG is a kiss off to a bad ex... aside from the rythyms, beats, vocals, bridge, instrumentation, and delivery being completely different, maybe they sound alike? Not even close,.

Suzie Mon, Jan 19, 2009 at 12:47 AM EST

I can barely hear Kelly in the chorus. What have they done to Kelly's voice???? They have so over processed her voice that I wonder if something is wrong with it.

nick Sun, Jan 18, 2009 at 03:57 PM EST

This song is alright. Definitely sounds like its from Breakaway. Hopefully she will have some songs on the album that are reminiscent of My December also.

Blast Aurum Sun, Jan 18, 2009 at 04:30 AM EST

REALLY ROCKZ, AWESOME, TOO GOOD, MIGHTY ADDICTIVE, STILL GOT THE SONG IN MY MOUTH: CAN'T SPIT IT OUT (i guess it'll be here till the next of KELLY's single)!!! Great job with 'My December' but 'All I Ever Wanted' is gonna blast it's way to top... GO KELLY, ROCK IT (hopefully the album goes 10x platinum). POP QUEEN= KELLY CLARKSON. Support KELLY CLARKSON!!! Yaaaaahooooooo...

Christopher Ewell Sat, Jan 17, 2009 at 12:41 AM EST

you can get it free on vh1.com!

Mike Thu, Jan 15, 2009 at 01:37 PM EST

come on people...katy perry-ish? Um I would say Katy Perry sounds Kelly Clarkson-ish....

opinion Thu, Jan 15, 2009 at 01:01 PM EST

sorry but it's not that good..i heard the new from David Archuleta, i don't know what it's the name, but it's not crush, i didn't know it was him until i saw him on youtube, his new song is better than Crush, it starts with a R&B vibe and ended as a Powerful Pop/Rock Song..It's pretty Cool..
'too not over you'' i think is the name of the song..

Samantha Thu, Jan 15, 2009 at 12:43 PM EST

This song is amazing! i've had it on all morning and all night. it's so amazing. she sounds so good! GO KELLY!!!! can't wait for the album!

Samantha Thu, Jan 15, 2009 at 12:43 PM EST

This song is amazing! i've had it on all morning and all night. it's so amazing. she sounds so good! GO KELLY!!!! can't wait for the album!

LadySolitaire Thu, Jan 15, 2009 at 10:00 AM EST

The song is pretty good and, yes, reminiscent of "Since U Been Gone". I love that it's stuck in my head now =). I still miss the moody and cathartic songs from My December.

MultiPass Thu, Jan 15, 2009 at 12:46 AM EST

A very obvious Max Martin song. very similar to "Since" and the work he did with Pink and Katy Perry. That said, it's catchy and she sings her tatas off, so it should rank in the higher elevations of the charts. go Miss Kelly!

Ray Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 11:40 PM EST

I love Kelly Clarkson and i think this song yes does sound a bit like since u been gone...but..come on you can't deny that this song is soo catchy and is a perfect pop song!..And another thing..Kelly has been around longer than Katy Perry so if anyone is copies anyone its Katy !...So enough complaining..ENJOY the SonG and be Happy That Kelly is back!!!!!

Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 07:30 PM EST

Like Kelly Clarkson, this song rocks!:)

Kristen Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 01:13 PM EST

Kelly's back baby!!!

Fasty Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 12:26 PM EST

Fun little ditty. I wouldn't be so upset about it. I kinda hope Kelly goes the George Clooney route - ya know where he does one movie "for you" and then one "for me". Put an Oceans and then do Goonight and GoodLuck.

Kelly can go pop ala Breakaway and generate some buzz/fans/cash and then do a My December and just kind of alternate. That'd be sweet.

Ryan and Jordan Sells Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 12:07 PM EST

We 1ove it! Kelly Clarkson is a true artist. Every album gives us a whole new view of the wonder that is Kelly Clarkson. She is a talent like no other! We loved Thankful, were thrilled with Breakaway, and in awe of My December. We are so excited for Kelly and know that there is so much more to come. Thanks Kelly for once again making our day! :) See ya'll at the show!

Man, It's so Loud In Here Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 11:20 AM EST

Kind of sounds like Kelly's been listening to TMBG:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JEXqs_RGgqs

Ed Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 11:02 AM EST

The first time I heard the song I thought it was okay. By the third listen, however, I loved it. It's infectious. Very much so. It's actually on loop in my head. I think I'll buy the album.

And I'm confused by the people who are saying "Suck" is like "Since U Been Gone" and that Clarkson is trying to be like Pink and Kate Perry. If "Suck" is indeed similar to "Since U Been Gone," wouldn't that mean that Clarkson is going back to what she has done and Pink and Kate Perry are more like Clarkson than she is like them?

kellyfan_aus Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 09:38 AM EST

i like it, it sound like 'since u been gone' mixed with 'human' by the killers. its going to grow on me a lot more. but i think people will appreciate 'My December' a lot more now. and for all those katy 'f-wit' perry comparisons - give me a break, that is insulting on Kellys' behalf.

Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 03:36 AM EST

Sorry, i accidentally clicked enter before i correct the grammar mistakes (i write to fast).

It will grown on me, i'm petty sure this will be hit, and Kelly's album may be a really good album. She's pop again, but so what ? And Katy Perry ? C'mon i know the girl it's not a one hit wonder anymore, but she is pretty bad and she is the one that does genereic pop. She tries to mix Lily Allen's personality with elctrobeats and alwful lyrics.

Kelly may be happy with this album. 'Cause she was never forced to recod anything, if she didn't wanted to do it she could've signed wih an indie label or another major label and do more songs like MD. But we can't judge an album with one song. This album may be a fusion of her last two, a My December meets Breakaway. A My December with more commercial songs. or a Breakaway with some songs not so commercial. Who Knows ? We don't know yet, but march 17 i'll be there to find out.

Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 03:22 AM EST

It's weird. They called her album, "All I Ever Wanted". I don't think it's what she wanted.

I think it is kinda a sell out after what she said and did during the My December days.

James Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 02:39 AM EST

I agree with Pete - this just seems like a song by committee - we'll make it sound like 'Since U Been Gone', but we'll make it the opposite lyrically, and we'll throw in a bit of Pink-esque reflectiveness (like 'Who Knew' which sounds just like 'Since U Been Gone')

Pete Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 01:31 AM EST

I love Kelly but I'm not a fan of this single. Sounds like she's playing possum. "Never Again" was no home run but at least it came from the gut and it sounded raw and real. The allure of "Since U Been Gone" was that electric guitar tearing into an otherwise simplistic pop chorus. Here all the grit has been polished away. I expected some compromise but not quite this much. Besides, isn't Dr. Luke officially too overused to be cool anymore? Get this girl someone ahead of the curve to work with. Not someone who rides. it.

Dan Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 10:20 PM EST

Thought this was "OK" after first listen, but, after repeat listens..WOW..I LOVE this track. Infectious and her vocals are spot on. Hey, she tried the "arty/edgy" approach ("My December", a way underrated CD in my opinion) and it didn't work too well. So, welcome home to mainstream pop, Kelly. Top 40 radio has missed you :)

camille Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 10:18 PM EST

so i was never one for Scince "You Been Gone" it was just over played..but i love kelly...i love My December it got me throught some rough times...this song is good i cant wait to put it on my ipod and play it over and over i love it..although it does resumble "Scince You Been Gone"...Cant wait for the album to come out its going to be awesome :)

LIKES TUNES Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 09:49 PM EST

Great Vocals. Crappy Song.

dsquaredfromasquared Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 08:51 PM EST

Yeah, Kelly can sound like every other Katy-bot out there. But she can sound so much better than any of them. Selling her soul to Clive & Co. for this CD will probably get her all the radio play in the world because she's now the poster girl for how the label can make or break you.

Eric Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 07:53 PM EST

It does sound like SUBG, but come on. Most artists songs sound similar. That being said, this is way catchy and definitely the type of music that Kelly should be making. She isn't dark and angsty. I can't wait for this song to be on heavy rotation on my iPod.

Jim Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 07:48 PM EST

Kelly is back..the song will be an athem..Kelly is the first and best Idol!

kada Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 07:29 PM EST

MEH!

Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 07:22 PM EST

Love it!!! Kelly can sing anything and this song shows it!! The song is catchy and makes me want to dance, sing, and have fun!!!! AMAZING!!

Rachel Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 06:55 PM EST

Generic song with a good beat, but seriously Kelly KILLS the vocals. :)

Christina Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 06:54 PM EST

It's a step back in the right direction, but the chorus just seems so overprocessed. Not bad though

Kyle S Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 06:35 PM EST

Nothing special... It's catchy but is easily forgettable!

B- Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 06:11 PM EST

Am I the only one who doesn't hear such a strinking similarity to Since You've Been Gone? I think this song is cool. I like it and I am not a huge Clarkson fan. BUT her song Be Still is underrated and awesome.

Raven_Moon Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 05:55 PM EST

I like it. I don't love it. Maybe I need to warm up to it a bit. I'm like that sometimes.

T Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 05:52 PM EST

Love it, Kelly! I'm so pumped to see you back - even though I was a *huge* fan of My December - and throwing out another get-up-out-of-your-seat song. I can't wait to hear the rest of the album. I'll be waiting in line to buy it on March 17! Wish you the best, Kel!!

Jason Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 05:48 PM EST

Tommy - This opens with essentially the same guitar line as "SUBG" and follows the same template of slower verses followed by a power chorus. It also has a similar 80s influence.

Chris Mac Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 05:47 PM EST

I found out this morning about Kelly's song being released today and I was quick to call one of our top 40 stations here in Houston. The DJ let me know I was the first to call and request it in Houston! Let me just say I was very pleased to hear this song didn't "suck" as many people were afraid it would. I like it and I can't wait to see the video and hear the rest of the album. Way to go, Kelly!

Laura Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 05:40 PM EST

It's a very catchy song, I really dig it. As whomever said before, I also suggest checking out All I Ever Wanted, I'm sure that's going to be an awesome Kelly song.

jaime Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 05:40 PM EST

TO LIZ:

The reason we love her is because she is really herself. Shes not fake she tells you how it is. Her music is awesome and her voice is AMAZING! If you watch her interview from TV/RADIO you will see what we are tlaking about. You can find tons on YOUTUBE. Honestly I have never been more obsessed with a musician in my life! Hello she even admits that this album cover was photoshopped...i mean she is amazing!!!!

Luisa Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 05:17 PM EST

Love it. See, this girl can really SING, unlike most of the poptarts. I pretty much only watched the first season of American Idol, and I'm pretty sure I haven't missed anything in the past seven seasons (not like you can escape all the hype anyway) because no one nearly as talented as Kelly has ever come out of there.

Phil Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 05:06 PM EST

Dear Dear Phil, I understand blogs are designed to make you think your opinion matters, but in my mind when people amke blog comments with NOTHING to suuport their theories, they're kinda pointless. I provided you with an opinion and facts to back it up, I could care less about Miley's bare shoulder & I'm certainly not a stuck up fuddy duddy. I like this song but its NOT going to be ginormous for Kelly.

Tommy Marx Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 05:04 PM EST

As someone who is a casual fan at best, I really like that song. I wasn't big into "Since U Been Gone" (I liked "Because of You" much better). I can see why some people would say "Suck" sounds similar, but I don't agree. I would definitely listen to this song any time it came on the radio.

Dear Phil Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 04:49 PM EST

It's people like you that made such a huge fuss of Miley's bare shoulder.

Karen Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 04:36 PM EST

This song rocks! Everyone needs to just shut up on her weight. She looks great the way she is. Not everyone has the figure type of a stick!

Mark Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 04:33 PM EST

Love Kelly but I'm not nuts about this song. It's catchy and I'm sure I'll love it in a few weeks haha, but the stuff from 'My December' is better.

Jason Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 04:26 PM EST

It's an exact replica of "Since U Been Gone," so anyone who liked that should like this.

Allison Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 04:22 PM EST

"I dig it. Hard not to keep still while listening."

Er, I meant, hard to keep still. Oops.

Allison Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 04:21 PM EST

I dig it. Hard not to keep still while listening.

liz Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 04:13 PM EST

Wow Kelly has REALLY devoted fans...I had no idea. That's nice. Anyone care to tell me what *it* is about her? I am beginning to feel like I've missed out and I don't get it.

anna Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 04:09 PM EST

i think she is a bad singer and dont really care for her!

tma Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 03:43 PM EST

She could sing the phone book and I'd buy it. Cant wait to hear her rock out the new tunes in concert.

Sanari Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 03:33 PM EST

While I listened to the melody during the verses, it reminded me of another song. I just figured out that it sounds much like "Sweet Surrender" by Sarah McLachlan!

Michelle Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 03:28 PM EST

It was good.. Just glad to hear she back.. Go Kelly!

Phil Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 03:25 PM EST

Ok, let me be one of the 1st to throw this out there. I am a Kelly fan, I thought "My December" was a tad depressing, and yes, this song is uptempo and all, but there is a golden rule that one must be made aware of. This will more than likely be a hit due to airplay or digital sales, but the golden rule that I am referring to is the Children Rule. Any song that is simply MASSIVE like her previous hit, "SINCE U BEEN GONE" is because its the type of catchy song a child can sing in the backseat of the car while their parents drive. Most parents, I mean as far as I know, tend to TRY to keep their kids from saying anything bad or profane & I'm PRETTY certain most parents would view their kids under the age of 10 as saying SUCK as a bad word. Maybe you think I'm crazy for thinking that, but if you need further proof, look at Xtina's last single, "Keeps Gettin' Better". By the time they had changed the lyric from "...super b!tc#" the song had already peaked at #7.

coco Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 03:24 PM EST

OMG, loved it!!!!

Dee Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 03:24 PM EST

I like it. It's nothing spectacular or anything, and it's a little predictable. But it's catchy, and she sounds good on it. I can't wait to hear the rest of the album.

nicole Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 03:17 PM EST

it's ok but definitely not great. i can take it or leave it. i loved her second to last album. wish it was more like that.

jen Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 03:06 PM EST

without comparing it to anything or anyone else, i like it. it's a good song. not every song someone does is going to be mind blowing. unless they're michael jackson in the 80s.

Trilla Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 03:04 PM EST

I really like the verses, but I feel like the chorus could use some work. Overall, good enough for a so called "come back" though.

MSR Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 02:59 PM EST

Yet another solid hit from Kelly. It seems since Breakaway this woman can do no wrong. I'm even more excited for the album!

Amy Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 02:57 PM EST

Welcome back, Kelly. I know I've missed you, but this song has reminded me how much!

NicZ Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 02:51 PM EST

Sounding katy Perry-ish, thats the comparison for everythi8ng now Britney Spears If U Seek Amy" I read sounds like Katy Perry, and everything is being compared to Katy Perry. isn't she the newbie or is she pioneering pop music... This is a great Kelyl clarkson song, and I'm excited and curious to see whats next. and if this restores her again as America's idol

flicketyflack Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 02:46 PM EST

"And for all of you conspiracy theorists out there, do you think her people planned to leak it on the same day that season 8 of American Idol debuts on Fox?"

Of course they planned it that way, but that's just good marketing.

Since U Been Gone packed way more punch. This is OK, but it sounds like they're trying a little too hard.

Nancy Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 02:43 PM EST

It's very safe and formulaic, but her voice always kills. I'll be buying her new CD.

john t. Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 02:40 PM EST

i like angry kelly more. but this will do. it'll take some getting used to since it sounds very katy perry-ish and i can't stand that girl. kelly has another song called All I Ever Wanted and THAT sounds like a kelly song. there's a demo of it by Aranda and it's AMAZING. google it or youtube it.

w.c. Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 02:37 PM EST

kelly clarkson does pop/rock excellently. the song and he beat made me bob my head and chair dance. i am a total r&b/hip-hop black chick, and i dig this song.

Alan of Montreal Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 02:32 PM EST

It's good, but it sounds a lot like Since You've Been Gone. Not so much in the melody, but the structure is definitely similar.

Rob Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 02:31 PM EST

It's a good pop song, but it's so dated -- and it was written by Max Martin and Dr. Luke around the same time they wrote Since You've Been Gone. So no surprise. She's also recorded some Katy Perry rejects so let's see how that goes.

Divo Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 02:26 PM EST

I like it!!!! She is back!!!!!! She will wipe the floor with those hussies that can't carry a tune... Katy Pery or Avril Lavigne.. Regardless of what you think about her, something that has always set her a part from her counterparts is her voice and her ability to interpret a song!!!

She a long with Christina Aguilera is probably one of the best pop vocalist to emerge in the last 20 years, my generation....

Natalie Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 02:24 PM EST

It's Kelly, Of course it's awesome!

Andrew Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 02:07 PM EST

Kelly is back! I missed that girl so much! This songs rocks!

David Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 02:07 PM EST

It's ok

jason Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 02:03 PM EST

OMG, I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE this song. Kelly is the BEST and this will be a huge smash!

Ruben Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 01:54 PM EST

Ugh, no. Is this is some reject song from "Breakaway"? It sounds dated to me. Go back to the studio Kelly. I've never been a big fan of hers, but admit to enjoying a few of her songs. This is not one of them. Maybe they'll do an awesome remix to make up for it.

jamie Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 01:52 PM EST

Kelly Clarkson plus a kicking hot song equals sheer bliss. I am one happy camper today.

Ben Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 01:50 PM EST

it is catchy as hell....nice to hear kelly is back and getting the (right) attention for it!

Sabrina Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 01:48 PM EST

Love the beat, and Kelly's voice sounds awesome...but those lyrics sound like they were written by a 12-year-old! Sheesh! I'm just going to enjoy the music and try to ignore the writing...

Kevin Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 01:42 PM EST

I love Kelly. The new song is good and think it will be a radio hit.

Great New single...I hope she'll have critically acclaimed hits after this. this seems to be the fan catcher to reclaim her position back, then she'll be releasing super duper great songs like thos of Because of You...: ) I hope 2009 is Kelly's year!

It's amazing! I loved My December but I'm glad Kelly's going to be back on radio again. "Suck" isn't groundbreaking in any way, but it's one of the best pure pop songs I've heard in ages. Smash hit for sure!

Did Rivers Cuomo write this crap? This sounds like sucky-era Weezer.
