John Mayer has (maybe) a TV show (again)!

News out of winter TCA today that CBS has given singer/professional boyfriend John Mayer the green light for a variety show pilot...and scoff all you want, PopWatchers, but this is a really, really good idea. Like, a better idea than Rosie Live. Okay, that's not saying much. But seriously: As I've noted in this space before, I find John Mayer -- when he is not releasing generic AAA blues-pop or trading endless licks with guitar legends -- to be a fascinating and hilarious human being. I embed a clip from the lone episode of John Mayer Has a TV Show that aired on VH1 in 2004 as proof. Long live John Myers and the bear suit! (Check out the clip if that reference makes no sense.)

What do you think, PopWatchers? Good call, or bad idea jeans? And how should Mr. Myers fill the time? I'm sure he'll read this -- maybe he'll even blog about it! -- so let's hear those programming suggestions.

I virtually never agree with this "writer" but here I do. I think it's a good idea. I hope it happens.

If he resurrects the body thong, I'll be there with popcorn!

Wow. I forgot how un-hot he used to be when he was chubby.

I loved John Mayer Has A TV Show-a ridiculously entertaining bit of funny. Even friends of mine that can't stand his music (silly rabbits) agreed that he is an exceptionally funny guy. But I don't see a variety show going over well, no matter how big his fan base is/was/will be. Oh well, that means he has to keep putting out music for me to obsess over...

John Mayer is brilliant! I can't wait to watch his show :)

Totally hilarious... say what you will about John Mayer's music or exploits, he is a funny man with a very strange and clever mind!

If you are ONLY a fan of John Mayer's tunes, or think he's only been relevant this past year as Jennifer Anniston's beau, then you have no idea how ingenius or funny he actually is! The few episodes on VH1 were hysterical, I mean seriously he had Trick Daddy on as a guest! (and for the record, that wasn't due to label politics to cross promote, John is on Epic/Sony while Trick is signed to Slip-N-Slide/Atlantic) I am so looking forward to John's Variety show, but if its on CBS, I hope they'll bleep out John's cuss words so he doesn't have to clean up his act too much!

Why does it say "Myers"?

Dawn Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 06:04 PM EST

I totally remember "John Mayer has TV Show" as possibly one of the funniest episodes on TV ever. When he made those girl rate how close they were to crying as he sang them "Daughters"...HILARIOUS!!!!!

The variety show is dead(unfortunately). This is a terrible idea. I also hate John Mayer. My college roommate and I were obsessed with "John Mayer Has a TV Show". Who knew he could be funny?

Whitney, you are right in that 'John Mayer has a TV Show' was awesome. I believe that John Mayer is a hilarious person, but I'm still skeptical about a CBS variety show.

Maybe it's just envy talking, but every time I hear about this guy's latest endeavors my first response is that there must be a quicker, more efficient way to feed his ego...something in an I.V. maybe?

Laura Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 05:22 PM EST

As it were, I despise John Mayer. Therefore, I shall not be watching. :)

the bear suit was awesome. but ti thinkt hat's mostly cuz i couldn't see his face....

Chaddogg Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 05:20 PM EST

I think he'd be great as an SNL host based on the clips you showed....but a variety show? Better to make it a Dave Chappelle-esque comedy show with musical guests built in.

you should see his clip on funnyordie.com about his songwriting process--I never paid much attention to the guy until I saw that video--he's friggin' hilarious!

Jen Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 05:15 PM EST

I think the variety show is pretty much dead -- unless its competition-style like American Idol. It really depends on what he means by variety show, but if it's anything like Rosie Live tried to do, this will not go well.

Dwight Fischer Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 05:01 PM EST

How in the world is a guy that sells only one or two million copies of an album going to pull in enough viewers to maintain a weekly variety show on CBS -- America's most-watched (and most geriatric) network. He failed on VH1 5 years ago -- when he was much more popular. Totally ridiculous.
