'Damages' season premiere: Murder, lies, and gunplay!

Jan 8, 2009, 11:53 AM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: 'Damages', About Last Night

Damages_l How thoroughly awesome is Glenn Close? I mean, yes, you already know that if you've seen Fatal Attraction or Jagged Edge or pretty much anything she's ever done (ever), but last night's second-season premiere of Damages drove the point home for me all over again. (Read Ken Tucker's A- review here.) And while the story arcs that took center stage look like they'll actually improve on the already quite good season 1, it was the smaller Patty Hewes moments that brought me the greatest joy. My three favorites? The way Patty glanced downward, like she was about to choke on her own bile, for just a millisecond, when Arsenault began his explanation for pulling funding from her charity with a puffed-up "let me tell you a story…" The way her eyes lit up with evil glee just a few minutes later, after discovering Arsenault's daughter had earned herself a spot at Yale. "Well that's quite an accomplishment," Patty cooed, as the initial seeds of the girl's downfall were sown. And then, of course, there were her completely insincere instructions to Uncle Pete that he quit spying on Ellen, which ended with my favorite line of the night. "Fine. Watch her. I'm concerned about her well-being." (Ha!) Yes, Patty might be troubled by the memories of trying to have her young associate killed off, but since everyone's still breathing and (semi-)functioning, might as well stay on top of their exact whereabouts and motivations.

Of course, if Ellen's being followed, maybe she shouldn't be holding all her meetings with those federal agents in parked vehicles, sometimes in broad daylight. How long before Patty gets wind of her protégé's traitorous intentions? And what will she do to make her pay? Then again, given last night's starting point of Ellen holding someone -- Patty? Frobisher? One of the feds? The stalker dude from grief counseling? -- at gunpoint, and presumably bound and gagged (since there was no responding/struggling/escaping going on), it looks like our little law associate might be gaining the upper hand as the season progresses. And I was glad to see Rose Byrne, while alarmingly thin, seems to have exponentially increased the number of facial expressions in her repertoire. I gave her grief for too many blank stares last season, but this episode, Byrne was able to hold her own alongside the rest of the heavyweight cast, particularly during that scene where Ellen passive aggressively questions Patty's intentions for starting the children's hunger charity. That said, do power attorneys really wear sleeveless blouses with giant bows at the neck (not the one pictured here, BTW)? Legal professionals, weigh in!

Speaking of the show's all-star cast, I loved seeing Ted Danson's Frobisher bed-bound and incapacitated, but still grotesquely scheming. (Asking his nurse to reinsert unnecessary nose tubes to garner sympathy with his wife? Day-um!) I was not as pleased, however, to see the terrific Zeljko Ivanek (who completely deserved his Emmy last season) return in a macabre and kinda silly flashback/daydream sequence. Ninety-nine percent of the time, I think it's cheap and stuntish to bring back deceased TV characters, and seeing good ole' Ray Fiske taunt Patty from the beyond did nothing to change my mind. As far as newcomers go, William Hurt was quietly effective in a role I expect will get bigger throughout the season (given his wife's brutal murder!), while Timothy Olyphant was creepy/sexy as Ellen's stalker/love interest. If I have to quibble, though, if a dude from your therapy group (the one for folks who've lost loved ones in violent ways) learned your last name and how to find you on any random weeknight in Manhattan, wouldn't you call the cops rather than engage him in a discussion on whether/how to purchase illegal firearms?

Anyhow, I leave it to you guys to discuss the remainder of the extremely packed premiere. But I do have to give a shout-out to Patty's terse "Except for the vagina" as the episode's best line. Also:  Do hospital doors have locks on the inside? And which made you giddier: Patty's victorious appearance with Regis and Kelly or Ellen's bloody revenge fantasy about Frobisher? Reveal all, people!

Why oh why are there no current recaps or discussions on this fantastic show? This is not a good thing. It deserves much greater attention. Please help.

Lisa Wed, Jan 21, 2009 at 08:17 PM EST

I watched the first episode of season 2 last night and I thought it was excellent. I am constantly amazed at how focused people are on the looks/body weight of some of the cast. Broaden your horizons people! Damages is an amazing show – thoroughly engrossing and challenges the boundaries of tv drama. It is such a compelling mix – a complex legal thriller and riveting murder mystery. Rose Byrne is an excellent actress. Glenn, Rose, Ted and now Timothy I think are the highlights of the show. As some people have already noted Rose’s character has evolved with the plot and she has handled the transition with aplomb. The fact that the weakness of her character drove some people mad surely was the whole point so the writers and Rose have succeeded in drawing people into her character and now she carries us with her to the next chapter….

Annette Thu, Jan 15, 2009 at 11:28 PM EST

I'm not sure I'm on board this season as I was last. I am tired of Hollywood's worship of sick looking waifs. Rose's arms and neck look really strange. She looks to be starving so fashionably it's making me sick.

I'm also quite sick of the whole NYC ritzy money hounds balony we are all suppose to drool over. Yes, the acting is good. But I don't care about these people and their hip rich world.

kb Mon, Jan 12, 2009 at 05:57 PM EST

I don't know what so many of you are talking about. I think Rose Byrne is great. She's supposed to be placid rather than emotional. She conveys that very well. You see both a placid and controlled surface but you still sense the anger that is stirring in her as well. As for her weight, she was a little on the thin side. It was even a little distracting. But it does fit where her character is at this point emotionally.

Redtint Mon, Jan 12, 2009 at 05:13 PM EST

Has anyone considered that maybe Ellen is looking in a mirror at the beginning of the show and talking to herself?

Ann Sun, Jan 11, 2009 at 08:09 PM EST

The only low point in season 1 was the awful miscasting of the Ellen character. Such a pivotal character needs a much stronger actress. She is no better this season. What a shame. I vote for the ghost and the hopefully frequent return of Ray Fiske. However we can get him will only improve the show.

Erin K Sat, Jan 10, 2009 at 08:37 PM EST

I take it I am in the minority here. But I thought the season premiere was awful! And, I worshiped the first season. I remember the very first episode ... Ellen running down the street covered in blood (me: dying to know what the hell had happened and being teased instead of gratified -- amazing!) This one lacked the hook; the high drama. I honestly didn't care who Ellen was holding hostage in the end. I didn't care about any of the story line (s). There was nothing to drag me in. It didn't frighten me like last time. The only time I had an emotional reaction was when they showed scenes from last season.I was unshaken, unmoved, and quite honestly, angry ... just because I have very much been looking forward to the premiere (they had almost 2 years and THIS is what they came up with?). I don't think I'll watch any more episodes this season.

film4future Sat, Jan 10, 2009 at 01:05 PM EST

Great season premiere. Frobisher is still the same old Frobisher! Ted Danson has never acted so well as in this series. Can't wait to see how he fits into the story. Same for the stalker guy. I wonder what Patty's history with William Hurts character is? I miss David...

Lori Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 11:51 PM EST

I'm about 8 episodes behind for Season 1, but cheated and watched the first episode of Season 2; it was great! I think Ellen's character is supposed to be thinner - she's dealing with grief and stress, which could cause weight loss. I am so happy Slezak is recapping! He is the best on staff at EW.

Sunshine Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 03:00 PM EST

Best show on the TV these days. I admit I didn't watch until I heard Tim Olyphant was joining the cast. I bought the first season DVD's and have been hooked ever since. Glenn Close is just wonderful. I was so pissed last year at how whiny and weak Ellen was, always being manipulated, never knowing what was going on. Now I realize that they needed her to look that way, so that we can see her character evolve into the assertive, vengeful Ellen we see at the end of last season and the beginning of this one. Kudos to the Damages writers. This format (bouncing around in the timeline) and these characters are so wonderful. PS: More Tim Olyphant please!

ELK Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 01:50 PM EST

I've been a lawyer at a major law firm for several years. While most lawyers still dress very conservatively/traditionally in business suits, there are plenty of female lawyers at big firms that make a tonne of money that push the fashion envelope with more trendy "business attire". Nothing wrong with sleevless dresses in the office - for meeting and court adding a jacket is a quick fix. Bows on the other hand, very very uncommon with the real world female lawyer.

Kris Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 01:20 PM EST

There are far too many people on Ellen's "to hit" list! It can't be Patty because the show continues for at least one more season!

Great start. will have to watch again. Ellen definitely needs to be more careful. She knows who she's dealing with, duh. I'll have to watch again since I was distracted from watching the whole show by Facebook!

Not sure what Ellen hoped to gain by seeing Frobie in the hospital just to lose her nerve to talk to him. They would have figured out it wasn't his wife who visited easily enough.

The coke bust of Arsenault's daughter was just the right Hewes touch.

to dan Oregon Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 09:11 AM EST

Why? They don't owe you an explanation. I don't know or care if she had work done. At least she doesn't look like a monstor like Priscilla Presley or Meg Ryan.

Delon Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 08:47 AM EST

Damages and Glenn Close rule!

DanOregon Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 05:50 AM EST

I thought Close looked great (a little too great in comparison to the flashbacks to last season) - almost like she's morphing into Laura Linney. I don't have a problem with people getting work done, only when it is clear someone has had work done.

cg Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 08:34 PM EST

Slezak, are you still on vacation? Hewes had Ellen followed. She knows she is working with the Feds, and is playing her, that is what the dinner is about. Wow, none of you got that?! And this was only my first time ever watching! Rose is a monotonous actress. Deadly dull. Maybe she needs to eat?

nathan Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 08:25 PM EST

sorry about my misuse of behind the barrel. i meant the person who the gun is pointed at. for all you grammar nazis who get all tough on people who dont write correctly on internet comment boards, go pound sand.

nathan Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 08:23 PM EST

i love how, from the majority of reviews i read, hate rose byrne because i think lots of people are saying what i feel too and that is that rose byrne is terrific! i love that she is not innocent anymore and i think she perfectly balanced being innocent and hurt last season and cant wait to see her balance being stealth, hurt, and stronger than ever all at the same time! i cant believe people care about her weight so much! get over it. her whole body language, arms, legs, walk, eyes, looks in other directions, draw me in. she can hold her own. my guesses for who is behind the barrel are olyphant, frobisher, the crooked cop who murdered her fiancee, or the young woman who wanted to sleep with her fiancee who left the door open when she left the apartment leaving the door open for the crooked cop. how great would it be if she physically killed the man who physically killed her fiancee?!!!!!!!

kim in kentucky Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 06:53 PM EST

I agree, I say that Timothy Olyphant is plant by Patty and he is the one that gets shot six months. And William Hurt is the father of the dead child, why else have Patty tell Ellen about going the grave site, etc. Yes, Patty could be on Regis, she had just won a HUGE lawsuit for the "little" people (like those who watch Regis) that had been all over the news, so she was a well-known public figure. Glad to see that Ted Danson's character survived!!

vanyvrgs Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 06:43 PM EST

Great show. Did think the Regis and Kelly part was far fetched.

Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 05:31 PM EST

ok somehow i managed to erase part of that message. Our hospital bathrooms in the patient rooms have locks, but they are unlockable from both sides.

c Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 05:23 PM EST

O MY GOSH!!! I was soooo thinking the same thing about the lock on the hospital door. I know that our bathrooms The room doors have no locks. That would be THE most ridiculous thing! How many times have I walked into a room and a patient was passed out? Or in trouble? If the door were locked and something happened to the patient... if a real hospital actually has locks on the doors... well...

young attornery Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 04:27 PM EST

You guys please shut up about the ladies weight. Ellen looks great. Ellen's weight goes well with her character. She is a depressed young woman who has just lost the love of her life. She feels betrayed, alone and nothing and nobody can feel this void she feels at this point in her life. Again, Ellen looks great, her weight goes well with her character. Glenn looks great. I am a young attorney, Ellen shirt is not an issue.I wear sleeveless dress shirts all the time. When I am in court, I wear jacket over my shirt. What is the deal??

ranger99 Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 04:18 PM EST

I think that William Hurt's character was the father to the baby that Patty buried when she was young. I also think that the stalker dude is working for Patty in some capacity!

Statue of Liberty Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 04:10 PM EST

(Sigh) Yes, Gina and Marie, we're all just jealous of the skinny girls out there. The reason everyone's commenting on RB's stick figure-like status is because she most definitely was NOT that thin last season. Is it because we're supposed to see Ellen as numb and grieving (and therefore not eating as much), or is it because RB has followed in the footsteps of Courteney Cox, Jennifer Anniston and the entire female cast of the new 90210 and become alarmingly thin for the sake of Hollywood standards? I get that some people have a naturally high metabolism. I used to until I hit 30 and now I have to watch what I eat a bit more. But for someone who was thin to begin with to drop a few MORE pounds...well it does leave you wondering.

Hunter Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 04:09 PM EST

Love the show and the cast additions!
Two Oscar winners and noone does slightly creepy like Timothy Olyphant.
As for Rose, she did seem to hold her own this season, but I completely agree: her outfits and alarmingly thin arms are distracting!

Todd Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 04:02 PM EST

Sonja, Season 1 has been out on DVD for a while now.

joe Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 03:33 PM EST

hmm....i'm not trying to nitpick, but wasn't Glenn's hair really long for it to have only been a month since last season? i noticed it in the flashback of her getting into her car and telling Ellen that everything would be okay. her hair was at least 2 inches shorter and certainly not as thick.

Sonja Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 03:19 PM EST

Does anyone know when Season 1 will be available on DVD? Glenn looks great, I noticed that she no longer has that neck waddle going on. Ellen has such an emotionless face. I guess it is good for her character though.

I agree that the guy from grief counseling group is a plant from Patty..

CandyMaize Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 03:17 PM EST

Well I loved the kick-off for Season 2. I have to say, for me, it seemed far-fetched that a show like Regis & Kelly would have on someone like Patty Hewes.

Winsey Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 03:01 PM EST

Arsenault's daughter definitely did coke. Patty's son just helped her figure out when would be a good time to bust her with it. The whole "it was the first time she ever did anything like it" was definitely a lie.

Ben Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 02:33 PM EST

Was I wrong in assuming that Ellen actually sent the letter to Frobisher's hospital, posing as his wife and promising a visit, so that the staff would permit her to enter his hospital room without too many questions? If that's correct, then I thought that leaving before he awoke was masterful, as it's likely to screw with Frobisher's head that his "wife" came to visit, but didn't actually stay to speak with him.

Sue Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 02:18 PM EST

Sorry if this is posted below - I didn't have time to read all:

Daniel (W.Hurt) has to be the father of Patty's daughter Julia. What other connection would he have to her to make her feel compelled to help him? The connections to her children are the only true human connections she has. Everyone else is just a pawn.

Marie Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 02:13 PM EST

I agree with Gina and everyone else who is saying "let's STOP talking about the girls weight". I'm starting to think that the problem with society is that people hate to see someone skinner than themselves. Just because someone is skinny, it does not mean that they "need to eat". They may not have an eating problem, they may just be thin...have you ever considered that?? If its not ok to talk about fat people being fat, why on earth would anyone think its ok to talk about skinny people being thin?
Anyway, I think this season might actually be good. It looks like they have a really good cast and plot.

RR Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 02:11 PM EST

It was Perfectly Patty when she sabatoged Arsenault's daughter, then feigned concern. She was able to get top billing on the naming rights AND he gave twice as much money! How do you learn to be that conniving??
Question: do you think the Yale girl really did do coke or did Patty's son plant it on her?

James Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 01:54 PM EST

"And I was glad to see Rose Byrne, while alarmingly thin".....I noticed also!

Kiki Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 01:52 PM EST

On the subject of Ellen's wardrobe: as a law student, I can say that lawyers, especially lawyers who work at firms, wear suits or business casual at the least. The wardrobe people should remember Ellen is not a fashion editor. I found her clothes distracting. And does Ellen's hairstyle have to change in every scene? She's looking like too much of a Hollywood star and not enough of a young lawyer. Also, I think Rose Byrne has lost half her body weight since she was in the movie Troy.
The show is great, but I think it has lost a little of its mystery from the first season. Last season, I always felt a little off, a little confused, a little in the dark. This season seems a little more straightforward.

jfms777 Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 01:49 PM EST

Did you really need to get so much "work" done, Glenn? OK. Just don't go the "Sally Field route," with regular touch-ups.

Gina Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 01:46 PM EST

Why do people say "she needs to eat" about someone who is on the thinner side? I look exactly like this woman - but shorter in height probably - and I eat regularly and mostly fast food, tv dinners and the occasional big meal with steak and whatnot. I've just always looked like this and yes, occasionally get the same kind of ignorant comments about needing to eat. Do you all not realize that is hurtful? You are more or less claiming thinner people are starving themselves or making themselves sick other ways.

Now, as for Damages - I still have the pilot episode sitting in my iTunes from a year ago. Sounds like I need to get to it and catch up. I am always hearing wonderful things about this series.

Lucy Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 01:40 PM EST

I have to agree, loved Glenn's hair, hated the Regis and Kelly bit and not sure who is in front of Ellen's gun! Damages is off to a great second season.

Joseph Brownell Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 01:29 PM EST

I think that Timothy Olyphant's charachter is a plant who is spying on Ellen and will be at the end of that gun. Glenn close and Ted Danson are too predictable.

Lin Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 01:08 PM EST

Compared to the savagely compelling season opener last year, I thought this one was kinda slow and boring. Still, looking forward to future shows. Why are reviewers so hard on Rose Byrne? I think she's terrific -- not as good as Glenn Close, but who is?

tonisha Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 01:04 PM EST

Loved this episode. Loved the dream of Ellen killing Furbisher. I was really surprised she didn't confront him in the hospital room. Not kill him--just confront. I'm sure their paths will meet again. Love Glenn Close. She's fierce. I'm really excited that W. Hurt has joined the cast, it can only get better. I do agree, how long will Ellen be able to meet with these detectives w/o being seen/caught? So Patty was lying about the guy coming for her instead of Ellen, right? B/c I remember she was on the phone with the old guy, he's like her right hand man, and he said it was done...I guess she's playing mind games with her. Or just wanted to play it safe. I'm wondering too who is it that she shoots in the forward flash. Will it be Furbisher or Patty? or someone else altogether? Can't wait!

Todd Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 12:41 PM EST

I seriously wish everyone would drop the weight comments about Ellen. She's not sleeping, and under extreme mental stress over everything that's going on in her life.

Erin M. Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 12:18 PM EST

This show deserves the full-on EW TV Watch treatment. Great premiere! Love how the new characters mesh so seamlessly with the regular cast (Timothy Olyphant = YUM). Wish Rose Byrne would eat something, though.

Jelana Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 12:17 PM EST

Yay -- we have Slezak! So far, I'm happy with how this season looks like it will go. You're right about Rose Byrne, she's actually starting to seem like she may belong in this cast, and she does need a few cookies. As for what power attorneys wear -- Patty Hewes was right on the money, Ellen wasn't completely off. Generally, if you want to know what female big firm associates wear just flip through a Banana Republic catalogue. Oh, and a serious shout out to whoever is currently styling Glenn Close's hair. Fantastic!

Casey Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 12:15 PM EST

I have to confess, I loathed the Regis and Kelly bit, which went on far too long. Yes, it was supposed to show the star quality of Patty, but it is extremely unlikely that R&K would have an attorney on the show. It was silly, unnecessary, and completely took me out of the show. Other than that, I thought the episode was fantastic, and has me eager to see more!

curt Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 12:12 PM EST

This show rules. Captivating from the 1st scene to the last. I agree whole-heartedly w/ the review & look forward to another great season with Patty & Co. Please don't let them kill my Glenn Close.

Jay Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 12:09 PM EST

The episode was amazing. I thought the hallucination was terrific because Glenn Close was (naturally) terrific. I love this show.

Eric Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 12:03 PM EST

I thought Damages would lose some of it's first season luster. Wow, was I wrong. Slezak already highlighted a lot of my favorite things about the premiere. I will give mad props to Rose Byrne though. She's really stepped up her game. I can't wait to find out who's on the other end of her gun muzzle. She really does need to eat though. She's dangerously close to Lara Flynn Boyle territory.
