Coconut Records for hipsters and non-hipsters alike!

Davycoconutrecords_l_2 The ingenious Jason Schwartzman does it again: Davy, the sophomore album from Schwartzman's one-man indie-pop band Coconut Records, pre-released today on Amie Street. I've been a fan of Schwartzman's acting for a decade and a fan of Coconut Records' simple, poppy lyrics since I discovered his first album, Nighttiming, from 2007. I am so ready for some new tunes by Jason, not to mention his next appearance in a new Wes Anderson project.

The songs that resonate most for me off Davy are "Microphone," "Saint Jerome," "Wandering Around," and "I am Young." What doesn't resonate with me? The album cover. It looks like someone doodled over an adult contemporary album.

Anyone else out there enjoying Schwartzman's music? Couldn't he have done something more with the cover art, though?

Davy is an amazing album, and it is for anyone who appreciates good music. Stop putting such immature labels on music and just listen for yourself.

He won't reunite with Phantom Planet, they took on a totally different sound once he left (which was a terrible decision). Jason's new stuff is good though, glad to hear new music.

Love his music, glad to run across the article and listen to his new music.

And in response to one of the comments, I can't see him reuniting with PHANTOM PLANET because their sound has taken a totally different avenue then when Jason was with the band

YES! Coconut Records is an AMAZING side project for Jason. Thanks for the post, Samantha! I actually just wrote about CR: http://thelittlestwinslow.wordpress.com/2009/01/14/musica-i-do-love-it-i-swear/

Coconut Records is one of the best acts out there right now. BY FAR. TOUR, TOUR, TOUR, TOUR, TOUR, TOUR, TOUR, TOUR, TOUR, TOUR, TOUR, TOUR, TOUR, TOUR, TOUR, TOUR, TOUR, TOUR!

I'll always be partial to Schwartzman's work as the drummer for "Phantom Planet". Now that the band is on hiatus, I'd love to see him do some work with his former bandmates.

I bought "Nighttiming" after hearing him on a local radio show in Austin and hearing "West Coast". It is one of the only albums I play from beginning to end frequently. Happy to get some more from him!

OK, props for the music selection, but WHO is this writer? She's terrible! I could read better music reviews/kudos/recommendations on my high school students' blogs, for Pete's sake. EW, what the eff?

the word hipster pisses me off very much. I do like jays songs and I won't deny it for now

Meg Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 12:49 AM EST

I actually love the album cover

Are you SURE this is for nonhipsters?

As a recovering hipster, I REALLY hate hipsters.

Dare I try this?

:)

Yes! I love Coconut Records. Ever since "This Old Machine" and "West Coast" (which is my ringtone). Love it. I'm so happy he's making more music!
