'Brothers & Sisters' recap: Justin cuts the cord. (Kevin, too.)

Jan 5, 2009, 02:30 PM | by Mandi Bierly

Categories: 'Brothers & Sisters', About Last Night, Television

Brothersandsisters_l There was a time when I wasn't a fan of Scotty. (That would be when I had a crush on Kevin's ex, Rev. Boyfriend.) But Kevin's husband officially won me over last night when he helped nurse my favorite Walker back to health after the liver-transplant surgery that saved Kevin's niece/biological daughter: "You look great," Scotty told Kevin, as the latter sweated through a mound of Nora's linens. "All shiny and mussy. Like a wounded World War II soldier in a bombed-out French cathedral. Male nurse-wounded soldier, it's always kinda been a fantasy of mine." (Scotty later showing up in a WWII uniform, in one Kevin's dream sequences, was the only thing that made that trite device tolerable.)

Personally, I find it difficult to believe that Kevin would have agreed to recuperate at Nora's house -- even under the influence of pain meds -- but it set up the theme of this (and every) episode: Is Nora suffocating her children? After she and Scotty fought over who was better qualified to remove Kevin's pants for a shower -- and Kevin had a dream about making love to Julia, Tommy's wife -- he bolted Casa Nora for a fancy beachside hotel with the help of Justin, who had some thinking of his own to do. (More on that later.) Justin calling Kevin's ill-conceived escape "amateur hour" (he forgot to let the shower run, lock the door, and bring his meds) was classic, as was Justin's attempt to distract Nora by promising gossip on Saul (he's got a boyfriend). How cute was Sally Field when she ran back into the kitchen to hear it? Nothing makes a Walker run like family gossip (except maybe for an open bar).

Kevin blurted out that he was having these dreams about Elizabeth to Tommy before he'd had time to process them -- something that I also doubt Kevin would've done even under the influence. Tommy's reaction -- have Kevin sign papers that say he'll never reveal that he's Elizabeth's biological dad -- was equally impulsive. But Kevin finally signed them after realizing that a dad puts his child's needs before his own. I'm happy that Kevin wants to have a child someday (because that will make for good TV), but I don't think he's as selfless as he thinks he is. Yet.

Going back to Justin, the show finally dealt with the issue we've complained about mentioned repeatedly: Justin does nothing. Sarah's son, Cooper, took Justin to his first grade class, to show him off as the person he admires most. The reason wasn't because Justin served in Iraq and "Afghanistan." It was because "Justin gets to live with his mom, and he doesn't even have a job, and he doesn't have to go to school or everything. He gets to hang out and play video games all day." Sarah knew that suffering such humiliation was the perfect time for a sibling (minus Kitty) intervention at Kevin's hotel room. Justin agreed that it was time he moved out, but admitted that he was scared to because he wasn't sure he'd stay clean without Nora's watchful eye and safe zone. (That does make sense.) He manned up and told Nora he was moving out, and she handled it better than, well, anything she's ever had to deal with on the show before.

I almost wonder if we've put the nail in the insecure Nora coffin with last night's episode. (Let's hope.) An acquaintance that she'd hit on 30 years earlier at a party (just to feel wanted when William was ignoring her) came back into her life as an architect who wants to design the center for her foundation. Seeing him made her feel like that dependent woman again, and she ended up like most Walkers do when they're feeling low: drunk. I seriously hope that this year's Christmas episode involves a quick shot of those CDs Scotty said he wanted to make of Nora's apology in people's stockings. I also hope we get to see more scenes with Nora and Saul. That one of them sitting in the pantry, talking about Saul's boyfriend -- something they would've done 40 years earlier, if Saul had lived the life he wanted to -- was so sweet. And, well lit.

The final storyline was Kitty's. With Kevin out of commission, she momentarily stepped back into her old role on Robert's team. I had to rewind, twice, to follow their conversation about that immigration bill that she didn't want him to back, but really, the only moral of that scene was that Robert and Kitty miss their "brain sex." I suppose I did, too. It was great to see them go at it -- in his office. With Kitty starting the publicity tour to promote her book though, the writers will have to think of another way to get those two hot and bothered.

So, do you think Nora has finally put the past behind her? Do you think Kevin and Tommy have fully resolved the daddy issue? (Kevin telling Elizabeth that she'd have to get over the drooling before she got interested in boys -- or girls -- was a nice end note.) What do you want to see happen to Justin now? And looking ahead to next week's episode, any theories as to what financial trouble Sarah has gotten herself into now, and what borderline illegal thing Tommy will do to get the family business back from Holly?

I meant not to have to see Holly...sorry.

bye holly Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 12:05 PM EST

So nice NOT to have a Holly-free show. She has to go. The recaps should be written by someone who understands the subtleties of this show, family relationships and the intricacies of these relationships. The recap sounds like it was written by someone who has no idea of anything other than the quick judgement and superficial views of a teenager.

tee Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 01:29 PM EST

Forgot to mention that I'm looking forward to how they deal with the missing son Ryan.

And any episode without Holly and her daughter is fine with me!

Tee Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 01:26 PM EST

I think Kitty got pregnant during the post-brain sex real sex episode in Robert's office.

Jenna Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 01:14 PM EST

I think Kitty is going to become pregnant now. Anyone else get that vibe?

BecMO Tue, Jan 6, 2009 at 10:43 AM EST

This episode - priceless! Scotty - priceless! Scotty & Kevin - priceless! Kevin is NOT priceless! Kevin is so selfabsorbed. I don't understand everyones hated of Tommy. There has to be balance in a family & pull & tug and Tommy fells that roll. Also if I put myself in his spot of fatherhood I too would probably do a few outrages things. Kitty gets him. Sarah should. Kevin & Justin were a hoot. It was nice not having Holly & Rebecca in an episode. I REALLY wanted Rebecca & Justin to work out BUT the writers have turned her into a nag. Saul needs more family time.

KrisFisch Tue, Jan 6, 2009 at 10:32 AM EST

Hands down best episode of the season. Finally, bringing back some of the humor from the first season. I still cannot believe that there is a full TV Watch for crap reality shows and an amazing show like this gets a measley, incredibly delayed "Pop Watch." What kind of magazine is EW trying to run these days?

Duy Tue, Jan 6, 2009 at 04:09 AM EST

Classic throwaway moment: Robert, with a look of exasperation, wiping off Kevin's shirt when Kevin drips popsicle juice on himself in bed, all while Kitty is talking and fetching a towel in the background. It's moments like this that make this show funny and real.

kalie Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 11:24 PM EST

it was really boring-- same story line over and over again! we need some continuations of Nora's non profit and Sarah's buisness!

badtoy Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 08:52 PM EST

Best ep of the season, if for nothing else, no Holly or Rebecca.

PELON Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 08:25 PM EST

Scotty just makes me smile. he's so up-beat and positive. perfect foil for the wacky Walkers. the whole show was terrific. particularly finally doing something about Justin. AND no Rebecca (YEAH). Tommy really is annoying and so out of touch with the rest of the show's cast. and no, I don't give two hoots about Getty's personal life. just don't like the actor or the character. never have. only complaint: the fact that NONE of the Walkers can keep a secret. EVER! Justin ratting out Saul when in a tight squeeze with Nora was just silly.

Sandi Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 06:10 PM EST

So explain to me dear writers of this show....when Justin goes with Sarah to find an apartment and takes it....well.....DON'T YOU HAVE TO HAVE A JOB TO SECURE THE INCOME FOR THE RENT??? What kind of landlords would have ANY of the Walkers sign a lease before confirming employment? Maybe the writers should have found him a JOB...and THEN found him an apartment afterwards....like people do in real life.

why does the recap always come out late?

why does the recap always come out late?

love Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 05:53 PM EST

i loved when scotty came running in saying that kevin escaped! hilarious!!!!

Lionel Luthor Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 05:34 PM EST

John Glover will play Saul's love interest, not Michael Nouri (Flashdance). Nigel Havers was also in Chariots of Fire, right?

I Got Soul Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 05:23 PM EST

B&S never disappoints me!! Great episode...love Kevin & Scotty together! I'm anxious to see what happens next - especially with Ryan Walker.

Elizabeth Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 05:15 PM EST

What happened to Justin's job at the recruitment office? Isn't he still in the army? I know they haven't been showing him working at anything, but when did he get discharged? I must have missed something.

josher Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 05:08 PM EST

Loved everything about this episode. (Scottie in the medic uniform in the dreams was too funny.) Enjoyed seeing Nigel Havers (the architect.) He's been in many series on Masterpiece Theater/Mystery for decades. Great actor and good chemistry with Sally Fields.

probie123 Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 04:47 PM EST

I'm not really into a lot of gay stuff but Scottie and Kevin do it great. They remind me a lot of my gay brother - he and his partner fight over normal things, have a normal life, and not the usual chiche characters TV likes to put on the air. These guys are sooo normal and I can understand anyone falling in love with Scottie - he is so sweet putting up with Kevin who is super selfish. It has to be true love.

Snarf Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 04:45 PM EST

Damn it. I missed this ep. Snarf V2.0 is in some serious ka-ka.

SeThe Rock Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 04:44 PM EST

I would like to see Saul more on the show. His moments seem down to earth and exactly what you wopuld hear a brother or uncle say. I also hope that the Walkers stick it to Holly. I do however like Tommy also. he is a jerk at times, but let's remember that he is given a script. All of us in the position he was in last night would have reacted the same way. Protective of his daughter. I'm glad we didn't see Holly though. Nice break form her and boring Rebecca.

probie123 Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 04:43 PM EST

This is the best show on TV and the one I missed the most over the holidays. Scottie is not going to get over being the kid's dad and Tommy will figure out that he has to "move" to keep Elizabeth happy. He also is going to realize that he lost the company and so that will be another reason for him to leave. I truly believe that the rumors are true - people hated his character BEFORE his personal scandal and this is a great excuse for the writers to dump him. He betrayed his family when he stayed with Holly. I can't believe that talk to him a at all. He FIRED his brother and forced his uncle and sister to quit!!! Adios Tommy! Scottie was great. He makes the show. At first, I thought the architect was Saul's secret love but now I realize that he is going to be Nora's love interest and believe me, she needs one. I think Saul's love is the guy from Flashdance. He's probably doing something else now but will be in the cast soon.

Corrinne Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 04:05 PM EST

I think Tommy will break the law and go to jail and there is your extended-Getty absence.

stacie Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 03:59 PM EST

I so can't stand Tommy!! I hope the rumors are true and he is going to be written out of the show. Love the rest of the gang!

Sam Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 03:44 PM EST

I was SO happy to see them deal with Justin's lack of drive (and his help in Kevin's escape was awesome--I love the two of them together). I would love to see him in a job like an EMT, or something to do with helping out society; firefighting, maybe? Something that is challenging and reflects his selfless side, because he often puts himself last (and funnily enough, a theme Kevin, not Justin, was dealing with in the episode).

Adam Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 03:36 PM EST

Nora running in to hear the gossip was hilarious! And I loved after Justin left, she looked so confused, "why is there a trumpet in the kitchen?" Too funny! Scotty was adorable, as always. Loved the interaction with Kitty and Robert, but I missed Sara, she is my favorite and did not have much to do this episode.

K Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 03:32 PM EST

That was a great episode with a great mix of humor and drama.

Elizabeth Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 03:25 PM EST

I love Scotty - the CDs of Nora's apology - classic!

so Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 03:18 PM EST

me too Gary, kevin and scotty are the reason why i am watching the show, they are the cutest couple on tv for sure.
also it was great to see the interaction between kitty and her hubby.
nora's phone message to scotty was hysterical !
great episode !

nykolus Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 03:07 PM EST

i was NEVER on board with reverend boyfriend. i LOVE LOVE LOVE scotty!!!

2Cents Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 02:58 PM EST

You missed the classic note of the night when old boy gave Nora an arched look when it was assumed all of her kids still live at home. That was laugh out loud funny!

Gary of LA Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 02:55 PM EST

The reason I watch B & S is because of the gay couple. It's a nice break from all the shows the feature heterosexual marriage problems that are tad boring & predictable. I wish they would create another Queer As Folk please!!!!

Kathy Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 02:43 PM EST

I love B&S, but this was not my favorite episode, except for Saul (who we don't see enough of) and Scotty, who is a truly wonderful spouse. He is nice to Kevin's crazy family, understanding of Kevin's issues and cute as h*ll!! No Rebecca or Holly this ep made it better, and scenes with the family all together are the best.

MK Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 02:41 PM EST

Glad to see I wasn't the only person who was anti-Scotty, pro-Rev. Hotstuff. But, as always, Greg Berlanti and co. new better than I did. Eventually I'll learn.
