'The Biggest Loser: Couples' Premiere: Nine 'eliminations'?!

Jan 7, 2009, 08:44 AM | by Amy Wilkinson

Categories: 'The Biggest Loser', About Last Night, Reality TV

Biggestloserjerry_l What better time for the start of another season of NBC's weight-loss behemoth, The Biggest Loser, than the beginning of a new year -- a time when many of us are begrudgingly nibbling on chicken breasts and steamed broccoli when we'd rather be downing Cool Ranch Doritos and Phish Food ice cream? And what better motivation than watching a group of 22 contestants drop the equivalent of a pre-schooler every week? So let's raise our bottles of filtered Brita water and 100-calorie packs to toast a new year and a new season of tough love from Bob and Jillian!

As my colleague Annie Barrett mentioned earlier this week, the series' seventh season is indeed its biggest ever. The heaviest contestant weighs 454 lbs., and he's only 19! And the trainers have some heavy lifting ahead of them, too, which became especially evident as Bob and Jillian secretly watched the couples via hidden camera during their first workouts -- sans trainers.

After the couples were split into two teams, they found their way to a dimly lit bridge -- why do all the challenges on this show seem to happen under the cover of darkness? -- for their first challenge. I give this one a 2.3 out of 10 on the creativity scale. Running across a bridge and climbing over a pile of sand? That's the best the show's producers could come up with? How about forcing the teams to do it three-legged-race style or with one of them wearing a blindfold? Anyway... Though the sister duo of the yellow team gave it a valiant effort, it was the dude cousins of the black team who won -- and got immunity. Here's how the rest of the episode played out:

Heaviest moment: Undoubtedly, 63-year-old Jerry collapsing after his first workout -- before Jillian even sank her maniacal claws into him. Thankfully he's okay, and lost an impressive 25 lbs.

What the #$*@ moment: I think I'm going to like the feisty girls of the "silver bullet" team, but why did Carla think her workout needed the flourish of a parallel-bars routine? Honey, the Olympics were last year. Leave that crazy Nastia Liukin business at home.

Biggest twist(s): The entire elimination played out like a soap opera, maybe even like an episode of Days of Our Lives, Ms. Alison Sweeney! First the perky host announced that there would be no elimination. After the whoops and cheers subsided, she got to the catch: No one would be eliminated, but nine people would be sent home (each team except for the Biggest Loser team and the team with immunity would have to nix one player). I was really starting to question why this season is called Biggest Loser: Couples, when there'd be no, you know, COUPLES. But then the final Ding Dong dropped: The players who were sent home could return to the ranch in 30 days if their partners were still in the game. By this point, Allison could have told me I had a long-lost twin named Rupert and I probably would have believed her.

Biggest Losers: In the end, the father/son brown team were the Biggest Losers having dropped a combined 54 lbs. Dad Ron lost 32 of them himself (the largest amount ever for one week).

Honorable mentions: The yellow team's Aubrey for sprinting the last 50 yards of the elimination challenge and almost overcoming the black team's lead. Also, 19-year-old Dan for dropping 30 lbs. Perhaps it's his youth, but every time he opens his mouth -- in particular, when he shared his dream of growing old and sitting on the porch with his bud David -- I get a little teary eyed.

Tell me I'm not alone in that department, PopWatchers. I'm also curious: Who are your favorites so far? What were your favorite moments from last night's premiere? And how many product placements did you catch? (I saw three.)

This is the first time I've ever watched this show, and I've gotta say that it seems like a pretty exploitative show to me. I was hoping I would see a show that would inspire me and at the same time educate me (like the National Body Challenge, which I watched for the first time last week and loved). But this just seems like a network trying to win ratings by exploiting people with serious addictions and possibly a few with emotional issues. I also seriously question whether losing so much weight in a week could possibly be healthy. I'll give it a couple of more episodes to see if I'm wrong, but in the meantime, thank God I've got the National Body Challenge DVR'd.

What a slap in the face for those 9 contestants sent home....The process to even appear on the show must be incredible only to be sent home after one week.....This turn of events was such a shock to all sent home that I can't foresee many of them following a dietary/exercising program and being successful. They have been "deflated". You have set them up for failure! This was definitely a step in the WRONG direction for those producers who made the decision to handle the show this way

michele Sun, Jan 11, 2009 at 02:38 PM EST

of all the people that needed it the most u send 9 people home. if they could do it on their own they wouldn't b there . what were u thinking.

Michelle Sat, Jan 10, 2009 at 07:17 PM EST

I agree with Denise W. I think that Carla should have stayed. Joelle just doesn't seem to want to work out. Makes me think of Neil season 5 (I believe) with all the standing around and then saying that they are working out just as hard as everyone else.
If you watch you will see everyone else working out while she stands still and argues with Bob
Hopefully Bob will straighten her out and since Jillian usually seems to get the ones that don't want to work I would say it's time for Bob to have the experience.
Kind of funny seeing Calm Bob screaming and swearing :0)LOL
Well, his lungs are getting a workout :0))

I did not even think about that by sending the 9 people home it might help stop the alliances and gameplay.
Hopefully it will work so that we don't EVER have a repeat of last season :0(

Like many others who have posted comments, I have concerns for the well-being of the contestants who were sent home after only 1 week. A lot of these people probably are emotional eaters because of a poor self-image which may also be due to lack of a support system within their families. But, this being a reality show, eliminations happen even if there's a spin that some will be allowed to return to compete if their partners are still in the game after 30 days. I do think that Bob and Jillian care about the contestants, and maybe if this show were on Discovery Health and not designed as a reality show where people got to vote other people off, perhaps we might be able to watch (and cheer on) contestants all the way through a season and not have to endure watching the mean-spiritedness and back-biting of contestants who want to win at any cost. Competition can be a motivation to improve oneself, but it can also turn ugly when some contestants turn on each other.

Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 12:53 PM EST

did you hear that song at the end of the episode!! oh my gosh, i lost it when that started to play. i found it.... "courage is..." by the strange familiar! download it on itunes!! :)

Stacey Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 06:47 AM EST

Sorry if someone else mentioned it already, but why was everyone including Alison sweating profusely at the final weigh in? Did the AC stop working or something?

Shell Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 08:31 PM EST

Bree you are correct he does have an unfair advantage with the weight loss surgery.

Mari you shouldn't guarntee something that you aren't informed about.

I had WLS in 2004 and although I have gained some back, I will tell you it is easier to lose it. One thing people don't realize about the wls is that they also cut off a portion of your intestine that obsorbes a lot of the food that makes you fat, so you will always have an unfair advantage against those that have not had it. Yes, you can stretch your pouch out and most can eat what thye did before, but you still don't obsorb all of the bad stuff that someone w/o the wls would. I don't think he should be allowed to compete, I think it is a VERY unfair advantage, and he proved it with his weight loss this past show.

pat Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 08:04 PM EST

i was very disappointed to see the new twist. Most of these people looked gracious and interesting and certainly needed to be there. They lost a fan by splitting up the teams.

ps. tivo is the ONLY way to watch this commercial riddled enjoyable show.

Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 06:31 PM EST

I've never gotten to see the end of one of these shows. The producers choose to "hook" the audience before a commercial break. I feel very frustrated when the commercial starts because we haven't seen the final weigh in or whatever. I change channel to the news and never seem to make it back before the end of the show. Believe me, show producers, when the show breaks for a commercial, we the audience should feel good and complete not missing some final event. Tivo is the only way to go for this show.

bootsycolumbia Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 06:22 PM EST

To Raleigh13: Thank you for posting that link! That article confirmed everything I thought about Heba. I'm sure Vicki is still the same, too. Oh, well, they're gone now, and the new contestants (so far) seem a lot nicer and more gracious.

bootsycolumbia Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 06:15 PM EST

Kelly, there was a husband and wife team voted out either the first or second week one season. It was either last season or the previous one. The husband was a lazy jerk who was always quitting his workouts to go sit in the sun, get a drink of water, go to the john, you name it. His wife worked really hard and at the finale she looked fabulous. He still looked like a lazy jerk. He was thinner than before, but not as dramatically thinner as his wife. My point is that if you're motivated and willing to work hard, you'll drop the weight. I agree that the producers should have waited a couple more weeks to drop this bomb, but I think this could be a great motivator for viewers who think they could never lose that amount of weight at home.

Kelly Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 05:02 PM EST

I think this was a really cheap shot on NBC's part - I understand it's reality tv and they have to switch it up to keep the audience - but these people are the largest, sickest group they've ever had and to send almost have of them home after one week is just wrong in my opinion. With every other season thus far, the people that go home in the first couple of weeks don't seem to have the success that as the ones who have the benefit of hanging around for longer. At the finale they tend to look as if they haven't lost much more than they did at the ranch. I don't know how they can, in good conscience, send some of those people home when they know after all the medical testing that has been done that some of them aren't going to be living a few years from now if they don't get some serious help. That has always been the one flaw in this show, in my opinion - I think they should all have a couple of weeks on the ranch before they start kicking people off.

Z Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 03:43 PM EST

I'm with Moxie when Tara called out her partner I had to back up the Tivo and listen again - Priceless. I have no clear-cut favorite because they are all nice and I get emotional the first episode of the season. That said I just want to hug Daniel & David (Orange team). Those boys grabbed my heart.

Denise W Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 03:15 PM EST

I AM SOOOOO Mad at Carla (the 'Sliver Bullet' team). WHY the hell did SHE leave. She weighs 370+ pounds! If any of the two needed to stay was HER! And she had the NERVE to get mad at her friend for not giving her best. Im still going for their team; Im really hoping that Joelle makes it so Carla can come back. From the looks of next show, Bob is getting in her butt! GOD I hope they win!

Denise Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 03:01 PM EST

I can't believe you sent all those poor overweight people home who don't know how to work out or eat correctly. I hope they are going to another Biggest Loser Ranch, like a previous episode, where they have the opportunity to learn and lose, and then bring them back in a month as the "other team."

Dani Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 02:43 PM EST

What a letdown! I've always wished everyone could stay for a couple of weeks before they start going home, and now this? And they're all thinking the person who stays has to work really hard to bring their partner back, but as everyone knows, that's not how this game works. The biggest threats often get voted out! Very disappointing premiere.

TR Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 01:57 PM EST

I read an article in a bike magazine with an artilce from Jerry (he was on BL a few seasons back) and he said that they only get 1 hour a day with the trainers and then have homework to do the rest of the time. I can't imagine Bob and Jillian training 22 people for an hour a day on the ranch and doing thier other jobs/promotitional interviews. I do hope that all the contestants do well, no matter where they are training.

Rachel Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 12:44 PM EST

This has to be the worst idea ever... Sending their other, supportive half home? Why do you think the weight losses were so dramatic?... because they had a partner in crime to help them beat the odds. What a disspointing beginning to a show. Strike one - Vicki (what in the hell is your screening process like guys? Do you employ a psychologist?). Strike two - getting rid of the "couple" aspect of your "couples" season... you get one more chance and then I'm taking you off my DVR. Like these people need anymore of an emotional roller coaster. This show has become more about product placement and ratings then the people... GET YOUR FOCUS BACK!!!

GreyhoundMom Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 12:18 PM EST

I recently caught up on a past season -- Season 2 or 3, the one where everyone was from a state -- over the holidays, when they shocked the contestants by bringing back people who had never even made it into the house. Almost all of them had lost as much weight or more than the contestants, and this was pretty far into the competition, so it can be done at home. They are still on the show, and they can probably still win a pile of money, which I think would be a pretty big incentive to lay off the Haagen Das.

To Rabbit Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 11:35 AM EST

My gym is $60 a month and includes 10 free sessions with a personal trainer. And if they can afford the massive amounts of food they must be shoveling in their faces to get to 300+ lbs, they can sure afford a gym or they could, I don't know, WALK maybe? Walk a couple of miles a day and burn off some calories. Do some aerobic activity at home - you know videos and dvds and the such that teach you how to be more active.

BIG OLE BL FAN!!! Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 10:47 AM EST

Found two stories this morning. Shanon was ARRESTED!!! On the night of the BL6 finale.

And MICHELLE is ENGAGED!!! WOOHOOO!!!! I hope she finds all the happiness she's worked so hard for. AND she'll be able to have her awesome mama at the wedding.

Steve Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 10:23 AM EST

Sending 9 people home was not the best idea but what bothered me more was that they sent the contestants into the gym unsupervised. Not a shock that it caused someone to pass out. Not that having contestants in their 60's is a good idea in the first place.

Does anyone else think having a contestant who has had a bypass is unfair? I wasn't shocked that he had the largest weight loss in BL history.

The product placement has gotten out of control. They sell out so much that it makes Extreme Makeover look normal.

bootsycolumbia Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 05:47 AM EST

I've been watch BL since Day 1 and this season is shaping up to be one of the best. I was upset about the 9 contestants going home, but then I thought, the burden is really on both team members to really stick to their programs. Imagine if your partner stays on the ranch, loses an incredible amount of weight in 30 days, and you only lose 15 lbs. aAdd me to the list of people who are really happy that Vicki, Heba and Heba's whipped husband are not on the show this season. From what I've seen, none of the contestants are that mean-spirited and negative. Finally, my favorite contestants are Tara and Dan. Tara is so full of life, and there's something so vulnerable about Dan. He's articulate and sweet. I hope both of them are in the finale.

I was hoping that the big twist was that all contestants were going to get to stay FOR THE ENTIRE TIME. They don't need to ever kick anyone off. Just have some really great prizes and other incentives. Or alternate prizes with just a few eliminations. Ratings and publicity are good enough to attract sponsors that would donate cars, home gyms, trips, etc. I think it would work and we would really get to know and love (or hate--I am looking at you Vicki) the contestants. It would have been esp nice this season since this crop of contestants looks to be the best yet--SO excited to be there and for the right reasons. Tara is my favorite but I also like Kristin. On a personal note--Ally really inspired me last year and at the end of that season I did a fitness challenge at my gym. I have lost over 30 pounds and 3 sizes since then and feel great. I work out 5 days a week and am much stronger and healthier too. The show really kick started me into action and I will be forever grateful!

kmac Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 09:58 PM EST

Is BL dealing with budget cuts, is that why 9 went home for a month? Have union issues shortened the season and it became necessary to reduce the number of participants? Well, none of the other commentators explanations make much sense either. Those people, in particular, need to be there and I want the opportunity to cheer them on. You've messed with a hugely successful formula; it wasn't broken. Oh, the weigh-in suspense has a limit! I do have one idea: lose the blond fluff host.

got2rejoice Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 08:45 PM EST

i really liked the twist (sending 9 people home), it will prove to america that YOU CAN DO IT AT HOME! these 9 are going to be determined to get the weight off and not let their partner carry the load alone. GENIUS plan!

bigmama Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 08:15 PM EST

I have been watching the biggest loser till it started. I'm very disapointed on how you did it this year. You get all these members excited and tell them that they are all going to be on the biggest loser and then after a week cut there throats and tell them that nine are going home. I think maybe you should of giving them at least another couple of weeks to get used to the program. I cried when the members where told that one of their family members was going to have to go home.
How cruel is that.

shan Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 07:32 PM EST

QUESTION - I am new to the Biggest Loser franchise, and I love it! I am so inspired by the contestants. Maybe someone can help me - when they get sent home are they given a plan to follow or are they on their own? I wish they didn't even have an elimination and just let them all stay the whole time. They made it that far and they should be allowed to finish the whole thing.

Linda Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 07:01 PM EST

I was looking forward to this new Biggest Loser Show. All the couples are great and really touched my heart But the big disappointment came when 9 people was sent home. They can't call it couples anymore. What were they thinking? The water cooler group didn't like it either. Bad way to kick the show off.

Matt Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 06:42 PM EST

Of course, I assume the "contestants" sent home are all supplied with trainers from 24-Hour Fitness or whoever the sponsor is.

Matt Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 06:39 PM EST

So... they make a big deal about this being the largest group ever, and how they all need this show so badly, and then they send almost half of them home for a month? Why would the show want to set them up to fail like that? OK, right, clearly ratings are more important to NBC than the success or health of any of these people, but they couldn't have come up with a better "twist?" I'm pretty disappointed.

tony Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 06:28 PM EST

when is the next episode?

Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 05:58 PM EST

I like the white team the most. I think they schould stay in because Jerry fell after his workout and clearly needs to lose the weight to become heavy after he passed out due to low blood pressure. I'm glad that he was able to return and the doctor didn't make him quit the show.
I also really like Daniel from the orange team. As the heaviest person ever on the show he needs help in losing weight and fast. And as a young adult, he will be able to lose the weight quickly and maybe even win this season...

Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 05:55 PM EST

I like the white team the most. I think they schould stay in because Jerry fell after his workout and clearly needs to

Rabbit Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 05:48 PM EST

Btw, totally rooting for Daniel! YOu can do it, guy!!

Rabbit Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 05:43 PM EST

Nuts! It didn't paste. Okay, the two folks I completely agree with are "ntp" and "Tim". To "HulaHoop" give the biggest raspberry possible! "-P (!!!) What a dope! Trainers at the gym are NOT FREE! They charge you at least $40+ a session. Add that to a $350 membership fee with dues at $30+ (Ballys lies!) and you are paying an incredible amount even BEFORE you get to SEE the trainer! Take a reality check! Most folks don't have that kind of money in this economy.

Rabbit Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 05:38 PM EST

>>
I agree with both these posters!! An incentive for those who got sent home would have been if NBC got them gym memberships as well. Gives them a place to work out correctly.

DC Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 05:33 PM EST

I don't think that after 1 week when the contestants come back that would have lost enough weight to be on the same playing field as the ones left on the ranch with Bob and Jillian.

As far as losing 25 lbs. in a week, I lost 6 in a week and all I did was change my eating and drinking habits and didn't exercise and I was not as heavy as those people so I think it can happen.

Raleigh13 Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 05:25 PM EST

Also loved Tara (green), Kristin (purple), and Daniel (orange)! Didn't like the twist, but could be a great motivator for all around: both sides have so much to prove and gain. I'm so glad the producers cast better this time around: I live in Raleigh home to Heba & Ed. Check out this article about the "new" Heba shopping for jeans:

http://www.newsobserver.com/976/story/1354864.html

Those of you who followed last season will not be at all surprised that Ed doubled back to buy her the 3rd pair she so desperately wanted! (RUN ED RUN!) Ugh.

GiGi Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 05:11 PM EST

I *love* Tara too! They better watch out because that girl has fire in her eyes and she could win it all with her fierce determination. GO TARA!

LibbyP Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 04:20 PM EST

Ok, back to the Popwatch vs. TV Watch issue. I read this article (the Popwatch) and still wanted more. I was pleased to see that TBL was listed under TV Watch - but the link led me back here.

I have recently felt that Popwatch has become the dumping ground for EW. I used to open both EW.com and Popwatch each morning (as part of my "Every Day" favorites file) but now most of the stuff on the EW homepage is Popwatch - so I've deleted it from my favorites.

I do love the pop culture stuff best, as long as it doesn't get too "People"y.

Christi Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 04:17 PM EST

Ken- how are women at a disadvantage on the show when the last 2 winners were women? The final weeks came down to Ed and all women last season.

Vicki Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 04:15 PM EST

Hey Ken, they don't base the wins off of total weight, it's based off of percentage of weight loss. In fact the past two winners were women who were definitely not the biggest.

I love this show, it inspires me to be healthy.

Vicki

JULIE DENTON Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 04:14 PM EST

I agree, with the person that 1 week was not enough, to learn all new habbits. If they could have done this at home they would have already done it. Most people's life styles are so busy at home, that planing healthy meals, and excersizing regularly is very hard to do. But on the ranch, that is all they can do or think about there.

Ken Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 04:09 PM EST

Surprised they sent so many home so fast. These people need to be at the ranch to get a good start to getting healthy. Regarding the winner...the person who is the heaviest has the best chance of winning simply because they have the most weight to lose. They should somehow incorporate BMI into the calculation to make it fair. The women are usually at a disadvantage in this show.

BackstrokingFly Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 04:03 PM EST

I laughed when I saw that tiny clip near the end where Jillian is riding around on Stella's back - all I could think of is all the controversy about Oprah's weight and how I would pay to see Oprah piggy-backing Jillian!!

Marty McDoodle Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 04:01 PM EST

To quote the Fat Fighters character on Little Britain...Dear, all you get to eat is dust. Fat Cow!

Linda Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 03:34 PM EST

I wasn't surprised to see they changed it up a little sending 9 people home right away. They do have every chance to come back. I think the reason was to keep the people from forming groups and alliances against each other like last year. We would like to see more of the gym workouts though and less time spent on weighing the people. Too much of a 2 hour show is just about weighing in and not how they achieved it by exercise and diet. Love the show. Let's see more of the trainers and how they work the contestants in the gym. Jillian can be our trainer anytime, great attitude, love it. She gets results!!!!!!!!!

HulaHoop Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 03:22 PM EST

I think people are making too much of the 9 who got sent home having to "do it on their own". Every gym I've ever been to has had personal trainers; all they need to do is make an appt to get a new workout regimen, then stick to it. They can buy both Bob and Jillian's books just about anywhere for diet and exercise advice. They got sent home, not to Siberia.

ScoPiMagoo Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 03:17 PM EST

This is the first time I have watched the show, but I am a big fan of many reality TV shows. I like the fact that they cut 9 people right away and I'll tell you why... most reality shows in the beginning of the season have so many contestants that I have trouble figuring out who's who and lose interest. With 9 people gone right away, us viewers can get to know the remaining folks better.

Jennifer Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 03:16 PM EST

Silver team "friends"
What was up with that one girl from the silver team?? On every other team they considered their partner and encouraged them. This girl (name?) berrated her partner, said this was a "test of their friendship" and then agrees to leave to see if her friend is good enough to get her back?? I have better enemies! :)

beth Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 02:51 PM EST

The device Bob was showing is called a bodybugg and I have had one for 4 months now and lost 52lbs so far!!! They wore them all of last season and this season have the new ones that are smaller. LOVE MINE!! Changing my LIFE!!

ntp Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 02:47 PM EST

I agree with the people that think it was too early to send people home already. I understand that it can be done at home, but you can see by the massive weights that these aren't people who have the skills to do it at home YET and I don't think 1 week is long enough to learn good exercise AND eating habits when you're that obese. I wish they could have all stayed a month and THEN did the whole send half of them home thing. These contestants are SO big, I really do wish them the best in losing the weight and getting healthier

Tim Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 02:45 PM EST

This show is gonna give someone a heart attack. Like an obese viewer who thinks they can jump into intense physical fitness. Then give someone hope then kick them off. Terrible show.

ASB Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 02:42 PM EST

OMG, Tara is FANTASTIC! NOT like Heba at all!! Ugh, heba and Vicky were horrid. This season seems to have some really cool people, Tara is so positive and competitive in a "good sport" way, not like the evil trolls Vicky and Heba. I predict Tara will win.

To Curious Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 02:12 PM EST

They determine who goes/wins by the percentage of the weight lost. If they did it by pounds, then the heaviest men would always win because they would lose the most pounds.

Sprite Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 02:10 PM EST

I am also somewhat disappointed that 9 people were sent home after only one week. I wish that the contestants (always) got to stay at the ranch for at least a month without anyone getting voted off. The winners of the weigh-ins could win prizes--tread mills, free gym memberships or a trainer for a year after their return home, even immunity in different weeks after the eliminations actually begin. I always feel bad for those who get eliminated early on. Even though they all still manage to lose weight, I think it would be better for them to stay for at least a month before being eliminated. I also hope that this season when the partners come back (of those not eliminated), they allow one of the people whose partner is gone to stay because they lost the most weight while at home.

The name of the song is "Courage Is" by The Strange Familiar

Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 01:47 PM EST

Curios, how do they determine the elimination or winner is it by total pounds or total percentage of body weight?

Kelbel Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 01:46 PM EST

Does anyone know the name of the song that was played at the end? From what I could hear, I like it. Is there anywhere that might be posted?

bebop Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 01:43 PM EST

My only concerns with the 9 person elimination is that these are the largest group of people yet. and one week with the trainers isn't really enough to give them the resources to continue at home.

Nancy Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 01:40 PM EST

Bodybugg

Nancy Todd Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 01:38 PM EST

I loved the twist with the 9 people going home. In the past seasons you know that people sitting at home were saying, "well, I could lose weight too if I had a trainer, provided food, and a gym all day every day." This is a way to show those people at home that it can be done. It seems to me that TBL fixed the extensive recap every time they came back from commercial, I didn't see that last night, is it just me? I love Tara and basically like all the contestants and their attitudes--applauding each other and patting each other on the back. Yea, no Vicky and no Heba!

Barbie Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 01:35 PM EST

Regarding the weight loss of Jerry - his beginning weight was taken at the hospital. Was that scale calibrated with the scale at the ranch? If not, it may not have been a true or fair reading...

Jen Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 01:31 PM EST

and one more thing...anyone else annoyed by the product placement "ads" in the show? Bob and his bug and Jillian doing the brita was really obvious...

Jen Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 01:29 PM EST

Alison Sweeney says on her blog (found on the BL site) that they started filming mid-September so that explains the baby bump (or lack there of!). And in case you're wondering, she's having a girl, and due next week.
I fell asleep so missed who were eliminated and finding it hard to know who were booted. If someone could post all the names, that would be helpful! You would think the BL website would have...but they didn't!thanks!

Preston Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 01:28 PM EST

Maybe they're trying to move the competition forward by eliminating 9 people. If you don't lose all the weight by those trainers' demands, you're very much on your own. The one that lose a massive 150 to 200 pounds are the ones they're more concerned and focused on.

rpeone Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 01:28 PM EST

Tara from the Green team is my favorite - I predict that she goes all the way and wins it this season. No way can you compare her to last seasons "Heba". Tara is all positive and in it for the heath aspects:)

Jennifer Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 01:22 PM EST

something "bug". Is the name of the devise.

Myrna Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 01:22 PM EST

Love BL. Loved the episode. I wonder if they are going to follow the contestants at home as well. That might be fun. My favorite so far is Tara and the Orange Team, but the whole cast seems good to me. There were too many unappealing cast members in the season that just ended so it's great to see a new group.

Jack M Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 01:22 PM EST

The elimination was done too early; it would have been OK a few weeks into the show. I do like that the trainers make the public aware that people aren't fat just because they eat too much. Emotional issues are always involved when someone is that heavy.

Beverly Plantamura Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 01:07 PM EST

Tara was a positive, beautiful spirited person- wanted to see her more & more on the screen. you can tell she is a winner yet senative-watch out trainers- one of you may be kicked off & replaced by a contestant.
GO TARA!!!!!!!!

Donna Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 01:07 PM EST

Does anyone remember the name of the monitoring divice Bob was illustrating last night?

This should be a great season. I agree -- to send 9 home the first night really rots.

Go Team Green! Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 01:06 PM EST

Glad to see a Popwatch but how about a TV WATCH EW???? Nice to see more positive contestants overall this season.

jes Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 12:55 PM EST

Hmm. I don't see a Tara/Heba similarity at all. Tara actually seems very positive to me. Eye of the beholder, I guess.

Susan Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 12:50 PM EST

I bet they started filming the day after the last season contestants left for the home-based time frame.

I still wish they'd make the men keep their shirts on.

Mari Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 12:50 PM EST

Regarding the comment about the father on the brown team having an unfair advantage because of the weight loss surgery he'd had previously, I guarantee the advantage is gone. If he'd followed the doctors orders, he'd be thin now. The fact that he's not thin makes me pretty positive he's stretched out his pouch. His advantage is gone.

barry Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 12:46 PM EST

tara has the right attitude for this game, she will be fun to watch!

bigloserfan Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 12:44 PM EST

I think I'm going to like the gray team and the brown team. Too bad one of the gray members had to leave. Green has to go. Tara reminds me of another big mouth like Heba from the previous season. Maybe the cry-baby partner should have stayed.

JMG Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 12:42 PM EST

I was blown away by the show last night. Last year I thought WOW as far as the weights went. I really hope that Jillian and Bob can help these people. I'm going to watch it over and over again for motivation. I've been trying to drop pounds and could have been one of the contestants on the show for many years now. This year, I literally wanted to go out for a walk. I'm going to the gym tonight.

Kiki Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 12:39 PM EST

Is Popwatch instead of TV Watch? I'd love a longer recap and discussion.

Sabina Cragg Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 12:33 PM EST

Maybe it's just me, but I have a feeling that maybe, just maybe, the 9 eliminated contestants will be back sooner than 30 days. I just feel like Kim Lyons might be popping back into the picture. Anyone else have this thought?

CZack Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 12:28 PM EST

I initially HATED the fact that 9 people got sent home too. I thought - how unfair, all of these people REALLY need the help. But now that I think about it more, it's a huge motivator and a lot more realistic. These 9 that are at home have to find a way to lose weight AT HOME, with everyday distractions, knowing that if their partner is losing all that weight to get them back onto the show, well, they better not be the same weight they were when they left. These 9 now have to live at home and still find a way to lose weight - they have the motivation of not letting their loved ones down.

Travis Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 12:27 PM EST

I believe that the people sent home can certainly do this without a trainer. Unfortunately they will have to grind deep and remove the bad habits that got them there. A successful life is a series of successful habits - it goes the same for an unsuccessful life

Marla P K Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 12:25 PM EST

I was teary eyed through the whole show, especially whenever they showedD Dan! I feel for all fo them I love the biggest loser. My favorite thing is getting on my bike and riding while watching it on Tuesday. I give them all credit for getting in front of the camera and showing the world what they are working with. Good for them...I hope they all do well. With Jillian and Bob as trainers, how can they not do well? Good Luck All!!!!

Vicki Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 12:23 PM EST

Re: PAOLA, yes, 25 lbs is a bit much. But most of it is probably water weight. That's what happens when you first start working out, and that's why the first week always has the most dramatic results. If a 430 lbs. man walks on a treadmill for 6 hours/day, and cuts his daily food intake to about 1500 calories, then in one week it would be more realistic to lose around 12 lbs of fat.

jen Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 12:21 PM EST

"So, if I were them, I'd go home and spend the 6-7 hours a day in the gym like I would have had I'd stayed on campus (or the ranch, wherever they are)."

Except they made it pretty clear these people didn't know what to do in a gym. So they've now had a few sessiosn with Jillian or Bob, but even with gym access and the BodyBug, they're not going to reach serious levels of workout unless they've got a trainer right on hand for hours a day.

robert j Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 12:17 PM EST

I have never missed an episode of Biggest Loser since it started. At first disappointed that they sent 9 people home but then thought, what a great concept. If the people that went home lose a great amount of weight it's going to show other obese people that it can be done. I hope all the contestants do faboo. I was a heavy kid and I have such a big heart for this show even for the mean ones too. Being fat , no matter how much they say "it's okay and I'm happy being fat", they're really not. Fave is Jerry but good luck to everyone.

Janine Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 12:16 PM EST

This is so refreshing! Most of the comments posted on here are normally so nasty and cynical. I love reading the more positive recap and postings.

Bons Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 12:15 PM EST

I think the reason a lot of the challenges are at night is because they use places that are otherwise utilized during the day. They might have been able to use the bridge late night since traffic could more easily be diverted. Think of the facilities they've used in past seasons (like the amusement park, swimming pools, football field, etc.). Being able to use them would depend on being able to do so at off-peak hours.

Dawnie D Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 12:13 PM EST

I missed it so I'm so glad there's a recap! Thanks, EW!

Henry Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 12:09 PM EST

I thought the Britta product placement was hilarious. It was so obvious. I bet those guys didn't forget their water bottles.

Also disappointed with the 9 going home. It was the first episode of Biggest Loser that I've seen, and I'm sticking around for more.

Jane Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 11:54 AM EST

Probably, the challenge was at night b/c it was on a public bridge, and they did not want to block it during the day when most people do their daily driving.
