Beyonce vs. Beyonce! ('Diva' vs. 'Halo'!) Weigh in!

Jan 7, 2009, 11:52 AM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: Beyoncé

For the last two weeks, I've been attempting to blog about Beyonce's twin set of new videos, but much to my chagrin, the embeddable versions keep getting pulled from the Internets. (The Crafty Ms. Knowles must want us all to pay for viewing privilege over at iTunes; apparently, when she sings "If you ain't gettin' money, then you ain't got nothin' for me," she means it.) But today (finally!), I've found said videos living legally (I think?) at YahooMusic. So, YAHOO! Let's discuss which is better: My favorite song from I Am...Sasha Fierce, or the best song from I Am...Sasha Fierce. And no, those are not one and the same.

First, my favorite, "Diva," a track that's already No. 64 on the Top 100 Most Played list on my iTunes, because in all honestly, I have a mental illness that makes me hit the repeat button on this track, then annoy friends and loved ones by randomly (and sometimes inappropriately) asking (in my best Beyonce drawl): "Where yo BOSS at?" The video has the production values of the clearance bin at Family Dollar, and yet somehow it works. Ever since I first heard the hypnotic chorus -- "Diva is a female version of a hustler. Of a hustler. Of a, of a hustler." -- I fully expected to see a trunk full of mannequins, Cylon-y fringed sunglasses, and angry-lady dancing on display in the accompanying video. (Good thing B provides the dictionary definition of "Diva," too, since her own take on the word is beautiful nonsense.) Where yo BOSS at, people?

Then, there's "Halo," an absolutely glorious and perfectly produced track that should be as big a hit as "Irreplaceable" and "Crazy in Love." Still, it's a little odd to me that the highest-quality track from ...Sasha Fierce gets a video that's lit so aggressively, I can barely make out whether B's paying homage to Flashdance or trying to give me a seizure. Still, I'm not mad at Solange's sister. Once that chorus kicks in for the final time, with its sweeping strings and percussion and B's glorious vocal, my innards turn to processed maple syrup, and I lose the ability to constructively criticize. Does this woman ever make a musical misstep? (I smell pancakes!)

Anyhow, check out the videos for "Diva" and "Halo" for yourself, then vote in our handy poll about which you like best!

I think Beyonce is sexy and has a thick voice but i love al her musics. Her live performance rocks.

wanda Wed, Mar 25, 2009 at 09:00 PM EST

Don't care much at all about Beyonce. All I'm here to see is Michael Ealy. He is hottness personified.

tray Wed, Mar 18, 2009 at 12:13 PM EST

beyonce is not a diva shes a copy cat fake her cd is so wackkkkkkkk i dont know why people even waste there money on it the song diva just braggs about how much money she has and how she thinks shes better than all the other female singers

SAS Thu, Feb 19, 2009 at 12:06 PM EST

DIVA is one of the WORST songs I have ever heard on the radio as well as the WORST video. B has been hanging onto Jay's #$^& too long.........

Anon Sun, Jan 18, 2009 at 04:35 PM EST

oh "halo" was wasted on the emotionless Beyonce. Leona, Brandy, Kesyhia Cole...or someone with life experience that bleeds through records. Beyonce sounds great..but so does Celine Dion...and equally boring.

"diva" ... don't Divas have to be original? I don't like the braggart material. Humble it down. You said you were the ish on "upgrade you" already. We get it lol

Alijah Sun, Jan 18, 2009 at 04:32 PM EST

oh..Beyonce is not doing anything new. New videos..what, when.... guess I was too busy watching Brandy's "long distance" and playing her album "Human"
and NOT regretting it

I Am Sasha Fierce is so inferior..these albums included

Nikki Sat, Jan 17, 2009 at 07:35 PM EST

i think beyonce' outdid herself with halo. that song is so beautiful and the video is a perfect reflection of the song. i love it!! goog job beyonce'

Youuuuuuu!!!! Thu, Jan 15, 2009 at 08:21 PM EST

Someone stated her CD should be called "Running Out of Ideas" I couldn't have said it better myself.

The Diva video is sooooo beneath her. I used to be a fan for her FIRST ALBUM but I don't see myself returning as a fan.

The only thing she is selling is sex and stupid music.

DEJA Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 08:38 AM EST

DIVA VIDEO ; SOOOOO LOVE IT BAGEN GOT TO GET TO HALO DIDNT SEE IT WILL REQUEST WEN SEEN LOVE U B

atrudiva Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 02:07 AM EST

i love them both but diva was the best cause that is who i am a tru 100% DIVA $->

Gdiva2k Mon, Jan 12, 2009 at 01:00 AM EST

DIVA...this "Sasha-appropriate song" has such a hard & low 808-dirty south beat that it could only be paired with this dirty & grungy video! I loved it! Her dancing was off-the-chain, as usual! Beyoncé commands attention whether on stage or in her videos. I just can't get enough of her music! She is truly one-of-a-kind! This H-town Diva is making musical history! I Am...Sasha Fierce has so potential many hits, it's unbelievable! Face it..the girl is BAD!

The Halo video was alright. I absolutely LOVE the song; in fact I "perform" it daily while driving to work! I bet this song would go beautifully with a contemporary dance performance. Actually, I thought she would have done something different and dramatic like that in this video. Giving credit, I'll say KUDOS to B for showing her soft side. She typically isn’t very intimate with a man in her videos (not even in videos with Jay). Humm…Beyoncé & Michael Ealy would make a nice looking couple!...oh well.

lency Mon, Jan 12, 2009 at 12:35 AM EST

I'm a Diva is a hit with me but not so much Halo. I was disappointed with the Diva video though.

anna Sun, Jan 11, 2009 at 02:42 AM EST

I love "Halo." Its such a beautiful song. But I don't like "Diva" at all. I think it's really annoying. I still love my girl Beyonce though!

Asia Sat, Jan 10, 2009 at 11:04 PM EST

ok.... I am a big Beyonce fan... let's just cut to the chase... the album is fire!!! anyone who wastes their time logging online just to bash another person is just a hater... i mean seriously... if i dont like an artist, i dont waste my breath saying or tyoing negative crap about them, i just dont listen to their music period or dont buy the darn album... some people hve too much time on their hands... i dont think the negative comments will affect her record sales... for every 1 person that doesnt like her, there are 5 people who do... she sold over half a million in her first week... she will be at 4 million by april i bet... Beyonce, keep doing your thing... you must be doing something right because you arent a successful Grammy Award winning singer for no reason... 50 million albums plus sold tells me a heck of a lot of poeple love you and the ones that claim they dont are just mad because you are just too fly for them to accept :)

Fierce Sat, Jan 10, 2009 at 02:48 PM EST

Love them. Either one can be #1 hit and I will not be mad.

CJ Sat, Jan 10, 2009 at 11:30 AM EST

Okay, so what if halo was written for Leona? of course it would be huge if she had of sang it, but Leona is BORING, Beyonce is not, as shown in Diva. Yes, its really like "A Milli" by Lil Wayne, but i loved that song, so another one is fine for me! Yeah, it all might be a bit over the top, but thats what Sasha Fierce is supposed to be, isnt it? Beyonce is having a bit of a joke with Diva, totally exaggerating her alter-ego, and thats why its so brilliant. Like her last two songs, i think Diva, like Single Ladies, will be huge in the USA, and Halo, as If I Were A Boy was, will be huge in the UK. I hope her next two song will be Ave Maria and Ego, but im almost sure it will be Video Phone instead. About the videos, I love Diva. I love the part at the start when the chorus comes in and the lights dim, where Beyonce dances by herself! Halo, i hvae to admit is quite boring, but i get it, with the light etc, but lets face it, this song is about the amazing vocals etc, not the video.

Adline Sat, Jan 10, 2009 at 11:08 AM EST

hot!

DAZZLERILLUSIO UK Sat, Jan 10, 2009 at 05:17 AM EST

Both vidooes are incredible. B shows range, humour and vunerability, and above all prescence of soul. It seems some people are still unwilling to understand how huge the evolution of Beyonce the artist is.
The lady is a talent supernova and there is no-one else in the field right now.

Grady Sat, Jan 10, 2009 at 03:51 AM EST

Wait, Slezak! Halo isn't just randomly overexposed with light-- that's what a Halo IS!!! It took me a couple watches to really get it, b/c at first I agreed with you, but you think of stained glass in church, and that's what a halo is, a lot of light behind someone's head. It all makes sense now!

monique Sat, Jan 10, 2009 at 03:46 AM EST

i loved both songs the first time i heard them. Which was before she released them. I am a big beyonce fan but i hope she remakes the videos once they become hits, because the videos take from the quality of the songs.

abindenver Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 03:36 PM EST

I absolutely love the song Halo. Love the range of vocal notes, and the uplifting music...and I love Ryan Tedder. But I'm not a big fan of the video.
Diva doesn't do much for me -- neither the song nor the video.

Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 09:37 AM EST

I like both v much althou I still think Leona Lewis would of sung Halo better, well I think her vocie would of done it justice. It's a shame it was giving to Beyonce to sing.

David Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 08:08 PM EST

Halo all the way. I had to stop Diva about 1 minute in. Beyonce should leave that trash to people like Missy Elliot, that's the sort of horrid song she might sing.

Martha Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 05:28 PM EST

Love both songs, but have to give the video edge to 'Diva' because it's got crazy-ass couture, fringed sunglasses and exploding mannequins in an old car. That is just awesome plus.

TAYENYC Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 11:20 AM EST

Thank you for this post, I honestly thought I was losing my mind for constantly thinking "Where yo BOSS at?" when people are talking to me.

It feels amazing to know I'm not the only one.

mami Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 09:36 AM EST

and for 2 weeks i have been waiting for you to write your sure to make me throw up review of these songs. THANKS you never dissapoint

Frank Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 08:51 AM EST

I loved Halo from the first time I heard it though it reminds of me of Bleeding Love a lot. It's a powerful track but the video is kinda lame.

diva Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 08:44 AM EST

and diva and a mill have same producer. and actually diva is first one.

halo Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 08:43 AM EST

I like halo more tahn Diva. but I think US will eat diva.. and halo is not written for leona. (this song goes to leona before beyonce, and leona didn't record it because her voice isn't suit in this song)

CD Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 08:32 AM EST

Still do not get the fascination with this chick. Diva was terrible and Halo bored me within the first 40 seconds.

marky Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 02:48 AM EST

Listening to "Diva" gave me a migraine

Frank Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 01:28 AM EST

Diva and halo, both the songs are just lovely.
Diva video is perfect for the song like that. Its aggressive and angry. And its the song of the CD part Sasha Fierce, and the song show the real Sasha Fierce.

And Halo is such a lovely song. The tune of the song is strong. The Video is cool too, but its not as strong as the song is. According to me it could have been much better, strong and interesting like the song is. But anyway, its the song of the Cd part I Am... which shows what Beyonce is in real. So at last, I think that video is cool, because its simple and sober, which is Beyonce in real.

So I just Love both of them!

Janet Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 01:11 AM EST

Beyonce first cd was great. Her latest I AM...SASHA FIERCE should be called I AM...RUNNING OUT OF IDEAS. It's time that Beyonce stop bouncing her behind in every video and focus on music that will be timeless. Stop trying to "dumb it down" with these nursey rhyme lyrics. Lastly, please stop using uhh ohh or talking about your fashion line in songs.

Sidra Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 01:10 AM EST

Halo is a much better song than Diva, which is just the wrong style for Beyonce.

Tip Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 12:00 AM EST

Michael Ealy and those gorgeous eyes in Halo...downloading in Itunes now

Dennis N. Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 11:35 PM EST

My formal opinion:

popkernels.wordpress.com

To Gretchen Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 11:16 PM EST

You hit the nail on the head - the problem with Diva is Beyonce is so NOT gangsta. 'A' for effort though, B.

Chicago48 Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 10:54 PM EST

Britney who? Hey -- Beyonce is the real thing. Smart, sassy, monied. She makes the BEST vids.

Fatima Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 10:39 PM EST

My everyday quoting from Sasha Fierce comes from "Ego" and the line "don't need no beat I'll sing it with piano" which is really stupid to say, but I do it anyway. Where yo boss at works too. As does "I be on the hotline errday." This is why my friends hate me.

Nicole Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 10:29 PM EST

Slezak!! I totally do the where yo BOSS at?!? And "diva is a female version of a hustla" is my new favorite quote. And I love both songs. It almost sucks that I have to switch back and forth between CDs to listen to them. Oh well

Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 10:18 PM EST

beyonce's best song is Single Ladies

LaLi Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 10:02 PM EST

A great performer and singer. Don't get me wrong I love B! What bother me the most is that she acts like she write her most of her songs, yet she gets a lot of press for stealing songs. Smash Into You was actually from someone else. She just changed Smack into Smash to get a songwriter credit. To me that's disrespected the other artist. It's okay to copy a performance and change it and make it your your own. But stealing someone song doesn't make it right!

dave Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 09:34 PM EST

Beyonce is the best I love "Diva" & Halo" these 2 songs and tha videos r slaming this is gonna take her 2 tha top but wait she already their LOL!!!!! Her next 2 song Should be "Radio" & "Smash into you"! People have 2 amit that when Beyonce comes she really comes with a BANG!!!!!

Chris Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 08:48 PM EST

Diva is a sad attempt at making a female version of "A Milli". The song is terrible. The sad part is I'll probably end up loving it.

Halo is a gorgeous track, although the video is boring.

Halo and Radio should have been the tracks to lead this campaign. That would have been "fierce".

Monee Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 08:25 PM EST

I love Ryan Tedder's big songs last year...Apologize, Bleeding Love...but Halo is only a distant third to those. For me, ripping off Lil' Wayne is unnecessary, too. So, I guess I like neither. Honestly, I hope none of his tracks for Kelly Clarkson's new album are this overproduced. 'Single Ladies' remains my favorite track from Sasha Fierce, for sure.

Ellie Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 08:05 PM EST

Honestly, I think round one (Single Ladies and If I Were a Boy) outperforms round two.

Diva's video is great, but I'm having trouble enjoying the discordant rhythm of the song. Halo has too many shots of that guy just standing (/sitting/lying) there. They're both good, but not great.

Gretchen Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 07:14 PM EST

As much as I hate to admit it, I like both songs. But I do find it hilarious that B is tryin to be gangsta...considering she is so far from it that my right toe is more gangsta than she is lol

Stephanie Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 07:11 PM EST

I love Halo, its a great song.
Hated Diva the first time I heard it but it really gets in your head, is very catchy!
Disappointed she chose these two songs tho, disappear and scared of lonely are my favourite songs on her album.
Beyonce has the voice tho, all her music sounds great.

dave Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 07:00 PM EST

The song "Diva" is probably the most annoying song to have ever come from Beyonce. I can't even get through listening to the whole song. Two minutes go by and I'm ready to rip my ears off. "Halo" is so much better. It's a really good song.

Classy Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 06:14 PM EST

"Halo" is the better song, and "Diva" is the better video. "Halo" is one of my favorite songs of the year, but that video is boredom concentrated. I'm really turned off by Beyonce's dancing style, but the "Diva" video is pretty cool and weird...but still, in a cool way.

LL Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 05:20 PM EST

The dance parts of the Diva video look like they were rehearsing for Single Ladies in a warehouse. Same leotard, same two chicks flanking her, same jerky movements. I'm not saying it's bad dancing - I've just seen it before, in Single Ladies, done better and more originally.

Princess Sophia Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 04:30 PM EST

I love both songs and both videos. Beyonce proves that you don't have to spend a lot of money to make a good video which is a good idea since MTV and VH1 rarely play music videos now.
The Halo video fits the song perfectly and the Diva video was totally unexpected. Great job Queen B.

Deon Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 03:53 PM EST

Correction:

*Sasha Fierce vs. Beyonce

Grace Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 03:29 PM EST

Love both of them. Diva video is HOTT!

Phil Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 03:27 PM EST

Just throwing this out there...since January is a stale month for new music, I really hope everyone reading this item on Beyonce has checked out her fellow Destiny Child member, Michelle Williams "Unexpected" disc that dropped in early October. Seriously great R&B/pop/dance effort that has been overlooked in favor of Beyonce's "I Am...Sasha Fierce". Michelle's latest dance remixes for "The Greatest" aren't that 'great' per say, but I highly recommend the "Hello Heartbreak" Remix EP! One of the most overlooked songs of 2008, IMO.

Jade Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 03:04 PM EST

Diva is the better video but Halo is the better song. Halo's video is just a bit cheesy for my liking.

Sam Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 03:00 PM EST

I don't know about that MultiPass. "Halo" is a bit overproduced if you ask me, though I think it is designed to allow Beyonce's vocals to florish over the music.

MultiPass Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 02:50 PM EST

Halo is very good and a real song. A remarkably familiar yet fresh pop ballad with just enough electro R&B clunkiness to make it charming. And her headvoice trills/yodels are especially hooky and a nice complement to her normal, somewhat forced method of singing.

But with "boy" and "halo", Beyonce is pushing REAL songs at us. These are melodic gems, with real choruses, bridges, etc. With any luck she is heralding a return to real songwriting over the production gymnastics that most music today still relies on.

Speaking of which, Diva is more of a novelty tune that will not hold up more than a few months. But I guess it fits in today's music scene. That is to say it's constructed first as a ringtone, then filled in for clubs, then radio and iPods afterwards.

Natalie Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 02:42 PM EST

I totally agree with you Sam. The first time I heard "Diva" I thought.. gee someone has been spending time with Lil Wayne in the studio. I must give Ms. Knowles-Carter her props, I Am Sasha Fierce is absolutely a hot album.. definitely great for workouts.

Sam Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 02:26 PM EST

"Diva" is the female version of "A Milli" by Lil' Wayne. That's all it really is listen to both and you'll understand.

Nick Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 02:20 PM EST

I'm really confused. I thought a ho was a female version of a hustler?

AK Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 01:38 PM EST

Both songs are great, but both videos just plain suck.

Pretensiousee Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 01:34 PM EST

Beyone scares me. A sista with no dance skills flinging herself around in a leotard. Yes, Slezak, a gay mans dream.

Pinky Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 01:32 PM EST

To Ed: Beyonce did not phone in her first two videos ("Single Ladies" in particular), IMHO. I have had "Halo" on repeat whenever I listen to the CD. The music, the melody, the lyrics - it's a dream. "Diva" would be my favorite song were it not for the annoying snare drum. I much prefer "Video Phone" to "Diva."

Nancy Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 01:11 PM EST

I like the Diva video best, although I absolutely love the song Halo. Slezak, for many reasons, I wish we worked together. Your "Where yo boss at" would be a perfect compliment to the "you had me a-at hellOW" I keep randomly singing in my office.

Phil Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 01:02 PM EST

Oh and the only real question I got is which rapper is going to be featured on the "Diva" Remix if NOT Mr. Carter?

Ed Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 12:58 PM EST

Halo is just more enjoyable to listen to. Diva is migraine inducing. Also, is it me or does it seem like Beyonce's been phoning in her videos lately.

Phil Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 12:58 PM EST

The lyrics still are kinda cheesey, but my fave song off the "I Am...Sasha Fierce" set is "Radio". A few weesk before the disc came out, & I was over "If I Were A Boy" and "Single Ladies" a friend sent me both "Diva" and "Radio", and assumed I'd love "Diva". It was cute the first few times, but then simply became as annoying as "Single Ladies", then the weekend after the disc dropped and the DJ at the local gay bar dropped "Diva" before the lights came up I knew that the song was going to be inescapable. Oh and Mike, the videos were released on iTunes as EXCLUSIVES, which is prolly why they been so hard to embed!

B Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 12:51 PM EST

I kinda lika Halo as a song, but Diva is horrible. I have tried to like it as people, especially Slezak, keep saying it's so great, but it sucks something awful. Halo is just okay. Could care less about either video. The first two singles were way better. What frustrates me is that this crap will get played when music by good artists with killer hooks gets ignored.

Fatima Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 12:49 PM EST

Halo is without a doubt one of the best Beyonce songs ever. Diva has the better video though. I pity those who are too proud to like Halo, really.

REAL Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 12:46 PM EST

the Haters will be coming soon.

Halo & Diva are both very fabulous songs.

Lynny Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 12:35 PM EST

Diva just seems to be pandering to the hip hop audience. Like, Oh we have to make sure and put a "street" song on here.It just seems kind of weak. I felt the same way about that Destiny's Child "Soldier" song. Ugh- anyway. Halo is very pretty and you don't hear as many love songs like that from female artists lately. Leona Lewis could have done a good job too.

B Rog Music Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 12:28 PM EST

Halo is something special. Grammy SOTY nominee?

susan Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 12:26 PM EST

Funny I love Beyonce but I'm not a fan of either of these songs. And I'm sorry but I still think it sounds like she used Alvin and the Chipmunks on the chorus of Diva. Hate that song.

Robyn Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 12:25 PM EST

Slezak we are twin souls!! I have had Diva on repeat since I picked up the CD in November! After the perfection of the stripped down Single Ladies video, I find there is just too much going on in the Diva video. I prefer Halo -- mostly just for her gorgeous co-star -- Michael Ealy.

Joe C Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 12:25 PM EST

Since I've often logged in chastising you, Michael, for overhyping your girl Beyonce Knowles, I will concede that I've liked the first two songs from this CD. I can already sense overexposure kicking in, though. As for your question 'does she ever make a musical misstep' well I think you know my answer to that one, lol! YES! Still, MAYBE I might download/buy my first ever Miss Jay Z CD this time around. We'll see....

Dillon Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 12:24 PM EST

I read somewhere that "Halo" was written for Leona Lewis. That would have been interesting to here.

Anonymous Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 12:23 PM EST

I am sick of this overatted self-absorbed twit. Her music sucks and so does her videos.

b0bbyr0we Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 12:11 PM EST

Halo is pop-ballad perfection.
