'American Idol' premiere: What did you think?

Jan 13, 2009, 11:00 PM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: 'American Idol 2009'

Hello, Idol addicts! I feel like my innards are currently residing atop my epidermis. Sick? Yes. But I'm so psyched to be back on the American Idol train, writing about my very most favorite show (and its very good new judge, Kara DioGuardi) that it almost physically hurts. Okay, so tonight's season premiere was a little short on future Kelly Clarksons, but I was definitely craving a second verse of Southern gal Deanna Brown's rendition of "(Sittin' on) The Dock of the Bay" -- she can go directly to the semifinals, without interacting with Ryan, and without collecting $200 -- and it seemed like the producers have lost their fascination with playing "kick-the-emotionally-damaged-child-in-the-schoolyard." In other words, not the greatest audition episode of all time, but a promising start to season 8. Weigh in with your own thoughts below, then check back around 6 a.m. for my full TV Watch/episode recap (update: It's live!). It's been more than seven months since the last one, so you know I'm gonna be wordy!

I think the bikini girl was sooo inappropiate for tv, this probably took the ratings down!!! She should not have been allowed on because now the place will be swarming with women in bikinis to pass through. And to let Ryan except a kiss from a contestant makes Idol look mighty fishy!!! Very distasteful of Fox to show. I didn't finish watching last season because it was so bad and I doubt I finish this year's now. This is about talent not bodies and judges getting mad and trying to show the contestant they can sing. That was sooo childish I would have been embarrassed if I were Kara.

aANI Tue, Jan 20, 2009 at 10:06 PM EST

Kara--new judge--thumbs down---JAN 20th session--she was so disruptive and much to mouthy.

Ross Tue, Jan 20, 2009 at 09:23 PM EST

What was wrong with the 3 judges you had American idol??
Kara DioDumbass is ruining the show. She is Not very much liked and her opionions sucked. Yall tried to fix something that wasn't broke. She just sux as a judge and Im sure this will be the last season of idol. Quite a shame it is.

PromNightDumpsterBaby Sun, Jan 18, 2009 at 09:59 AM EST

PURE CRAP ... so goes the nation.

Melinda Thu, Jan 15, 2009 at 09:51 PM EST

I agree with (Sophiagirl) your 100% right Bikini girl made the biggest fool of her self and will not make it far. maybe she should put her clothing back on I would have had some respect for her. I'm a bikini model and I wouldn't show up half naked just to get attention.

Sophiagirl Thu, Jan 15, 2009 at 08:01 PM EST

Can you believe the idiot who just commented that "95% of people who don't like bikini girl are probably ugly, obese women..."??? I'm 28 yrs old, 5"9" / 137 lbs and hot - and believe me I thought "bikini girl" made a fool of herself. She can't sing, so of course she had to audition half-naked to get anyone to take notice of her. Her wanna-be runs were a joke - so amatuer. Her self-obsession and lack of dignity was painful to watch. She's gonna get reemed by the girls who can actually sing during Hollywood week.

bikinigirl Thu, Jan 15, 2009 at 01:57 PM EST

I'd say about 95% of the people not liking bikini girl are probably ugly, obese women. Toodles!

magscredit Thu, Jan 15, 2009 at 01:45 PM EST

How insecure do you have to be to get hired by idol. This Kara made a fool of herself by trying to one up the bikini girl. Paula was right in stopping her singing. She wasn't doing any better than the girl in the bikini.

Marcia Thelemaque Thu, Jan 15, 2009 at 01:10 AM EST

P.S.: And did you see that one guy who actually begged the judges...and got in???? Come on, guys.

Marcia Thelemaque Thu, Jan 15, 2009 at 01:08 AM EST

What was that???? Simon's repeated, "I like you" and the new gal's bland critiques were just bad. It was like they've been reading really bad reviews, and are desperate, hence, resorting to gimmicks (more than usual). Well, I guess it's over...at least for me.

Donna Rosenberg Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 10:22 PM EST

Oh well. Good fun. Like the new judge Kara. Someone called Simon Simeeeee?! Should be a good year. One of who we heard will do it. Bring it on.

Tony Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 10:18 PM EST

So far So Good, BUT i dont think it will top Last Season, Season 7 had way too much Talent, But So far so good

i miss David Archuleta. he is unique, the only reason i watched that show was only because of him..i'm watching now because i still have hopes that they show him again..

sarahpallin Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 09:58 PM EST

With another $69 billion dollars just requested (out of our pockets) to fund the war in Iraq for a few more months, no money for school music classes, health clinics or to fix the potholes, and standing in line an hour at the local drug store to get a perscripion filled, all I can say is "thank you President Bush for your idiotic policies, thank you to the worst congress in 50 years, and thank you , Jewish television producers everywhere, for giving all of us mindless empty entertainment like "AI", which we watch while drooling over our chemical-filled Domino's extra-stuffed, cheese-in-crust, six tangy toppings pizza.

sasha Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 09:05 PM EST

ps: too many people focusing on bikini girl...

sasha Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 09:02 PM EST

i isually love watching idol, but yesterday's premiere i felt crossed the line. such was the case with Elijah Scarlett, the guy with the deep voice. he cannot change the voice he was born with, and to tell him that he sounds like he comes out of a horror movie or comparing him to a monster is just sickening. you cancriticize people, but that doesn't give you the right to insult them. it was hard to see him try to hide the look of embarrassment with a smile. obviously, with his reaction, he showed that he's better educated than the judges. AI is starting to lose integrity for ratings. They owe Elijah an apology.

terri Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 08:48 PM EST

why does FOX waste hours and weeks on the stupid, disgusting acting people who don't even make it to Hollywood? It's such a waste of the viewer's time and the network's money!!!! The bikini girl should have been made to wear some CLOTHES to cover her skinny body up!!!!!!!!!!!!

elizabeth Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 08:26 PM EST

I HATE THAT THEY HAVE FOUR JUDGES NOW.
I DO NOT LIKE KARA (HOWEVER YOU SPELL HER NAME) I DNT LIKE HER AT ALL.... N' IM GLAD THAT THE BIKINI GIRL SHOWED HER.!

I THINK THAT BY THEM HAVIN THE FOURTH JUDGE THEY ARE GOING TO LOOSE ALOT OF VIEWERS... BECAUSE I KNW THAT IM NOT GOING TO WATCH IT LIKE I DID LAST YEAR BECAUSE OF HER..

Edward Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 08:13 PM EST

Too much repeated filler of the moronic talented instead of giving us a sampling of the others that made it.

Mike Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 07:45 PM EST

Sorry, I've got better things to do than watching mind numbing Television shows.

Chief among these better activities is writing comments on entertainment blogs about said shows.

Seriously, enjoyed the first episode... but think the new judge will take time to get used to, if she works at all. Randy is the perfect straight man to the dysfunction of Paula and Simon. Not sure what Kara brings... but I'll be patient.

Noemi Riva Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 07:15 PM EST

I enjoyed the show with just Simon, Randy and of course Paula! Why the change??

Heather Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 07:05 PM EST

I thought the comment Kara made about her fan after she left the room was downright RUDE - "If that's my biggest fan, what does that say about me." What is says is, you have a 16 year old girl who aspires to be LIKE you and appreciates your work. What's wrong with that? I thought she was cute and sang her little heart out. Maybe not up to "Idol" par, but with more soul than 95% of the people who audition. Totally classless Kara.

karen Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 06:56 PM EST

"bikini girl" is just another example of how if you keep telling people something, they'll start to believe it. That girl is not even close to attractive. She's has no shape (and no, I don't think fat=curvy, fat is fat, but this girl just went straight up and down - no waist at all.) She walked like a cow, and with her stomach all stuck out like she's pregnant. Her face looks inbred, and that hairstyle is godawful. Yet they told us she was beautiful, and now everyone's repeating it. People need to learn to think for themselves.

Yolanda Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 06:39 PM EST

Kara's a cool addition. I am just glad Idol's back.

moochie7 Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 06:28 PM EST

I love Kara! Thank you, AI!!! (Get bikini girl. She'll be SORRY she dissed you!!

ANGELA Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 06:06 PM EST

I meant to say I hope Kara only has a 1 year contract
w/ AI. She doesn't have to sing the song for the
contestants. That is why they are there. Simon and
Randy were just having fun w/ bikini girl. Even they
don't expect her to make it to top 20.

Margatet Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 06:03 PM EST

I loved American Idol last night. Kara is a great addition to this show. LOVE AMERICAN IDOL. CAN'T WAIT TO SEE IT TONIGHT

KARA Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 05:46 PM EST

I really wish Simon would pronounce Kara's name correctly! It drives me nuts! Our name is pronounced CARE-UH, NOT CAR-UH!!!! Ugghhh! Other than that liked it except bikini girl. Someone needs to slap the crap out of her.

Mark Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 04:55 PM EST

You want to know what Britney will be in 20 years, just look at Paula. A no-talent, stumbling, over-medicated tart who without harmonics machines and a slight ability to dance, would be completely forgotten. Kara is a great addition. Honest and actually has a viable brain, and not to metion, talent. No more can the pathetic wannabes say " well lets see you get up here and do it". Kara can.

ANGELA Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 04:50 PM EST

I do NOT like Kara!!!! She has a terrible personality.
She is just plain rude everyone. I think she is caught up in her own importance. Her attitude has got to change or people won't keep watching. I got this is a
one year contract with her.

Tammy Sutter Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 04:47 PM EST

LOVED the girl who did Barracuda. Just awesome.

kushka53 Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 04:28 PM EST

Lov! Thought it was the best first night ever, especially since a lot of the nutters were cut out and only the bad, but funny, singers left for comic effect...

Marcy Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 04:22 PM EST

Bikini Girl was horrible and Kara not only sang the song better she did it with the swing that song requires. I am happy she's on! Team Kara all day long

MA Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 04:16 PM EST

I liked Kara, she seems to know her stuff and can give constructive criticism but still keep it firm. As for the "Bikini Girl", since we're all talking about it, consider it a success for the producers. They need to produce something that will keep people talking, good or bad. She needs attention, they need publicity.

tc leary Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 04:11 PM EST

More power to him. Look how many lives he changes from all walks of life and how much enjoyment the program brings to so many.

Chief.... Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 04:00 PM EST

I'm proud to say that I've NEVER seen the show!!!!!!!11

kenneth green Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 03:58 PM EST

THERE WAS NOT ENOUGH COLOR IN THIS IDOL, I MEAN BLACKS

tickles Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 03:55 PM EST

Bikini girl has a nice body...and a nice voice. Maybe not the best we've heard...but not the worst either. How come so many are up in arms over her kissing Ryan? I remember many (many) other contestants giving Ryan kisses and hugs. And by the way..she siad she would "make out" with him.(implies kissing) not have sex with him if she made it through.
Kara may know her stuff...but she sure came off badly in her little con-tre-temps with bikini girl.

Jan Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 03:52 PM EST

I liked how they focused more on the good singers and less on the horrible in this audition episode. I hope this is an angle they'll keep for the rest of them. It seems like they're giving more attention to the younger hopefuls - I noticed a lot of 16-17 year olds. That's fine if they have the talent, but I wonder if it's also a case of marketing, setting up to further capitalize on the bankability of Archuleta (tweens = generally more fierce fanbase = more record sales). Oh look at me, I'm projecting..

John Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 03:50 PM EST

they wasted a paycheck when they hired the 4th judge...Was no reason to change what was already working so well.....Nothing personal against Kara, shes ok...but she's like a guest judge...blah

todd Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 03:50 PM EST

for those that criticize the "bikini girl" for working her sexuality I say, "have you heard britney spears?"

Troy Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 03:50 PM EST

Last nights show was okay. Its a little hard to watch some of the idiots that try out for the show that have absolutly no talent. But its even harder to watch those folks reaction when they really believed that they were good and they should be advanced in the competition. Lastly, I thought it was a little ridiculous when the new judge tried to show off her singing skill against "bikini girl". It just showed a little jealously and that she didn't like the attention being drawn away from herself.

Slick Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 03:50 PM EST

I think - therefore I didn't watch it!

Lee in Oceanside Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 03:48 PM EST

Sorry, but I don't think Simon is worth $50 million a year.

Andrew Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 03:39 PM EST

I couldn't stand the new judge. My favorite part of the show was when she couldn't handle someone doing what they needed to do to get noticed out of 10-20,000 people. I am specifically referring to bikini girl. Kara was immediately annoyed with her because she admittedly used sex appeal to get noticed, then when she sang she didn't sound all that bad...a little forced, but not that bad. Hollywood worthy just not past the first round. I just thought it was funny that Kara felt she had to prove to this girl she was a better singer when this girl had laid the funniest cutdown of the entire show on her. Kara was so flustered that Paula had to tell her finally, "You don't have to prove yourself to her," and sat Kara down. She is of no value whatsoever.

suebrody Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 03:25 PM EST

Well, there weren't any knock out performances for me (I found bikini girl very annoying, and the impaired man inspiring but they overdid it). I do like Kara, however; she tells it like it is, and doesn't just say "Dawg, that was Molten Hot!" and "Da Bomb!" (What I'm saying is that she is far less annoying than Randy and Paula, and a nice counterpart to Simon. He'll need to be on his game this year.) Anyway, I was just happy for the season to begin, and I have to admit that I rewound the David Cook segment (and I am happy to see his face during the opening credits and on the backdrop to the auditions). I hope he sings the voted off song; Ruben's was completely boring, and I don't think we'll get "Bad Day" or "Home" again (perfect songs). Let there be another singer as talented as Cook so I can move on. ;-)

Alienate Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 03:22 PM EST

I liked the show. It had the right mix of singers vs. goofs. I like Kara as a new judge, she seems qualified and articulate. Ryan's HI-5 of a blind guy was one for the ages!

Jason Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 03:21 PM EST

All of the bad comments on this forum are from people at nbc, cbs, and abc. This show is thoroughly entertaining. If it sucks so bad, why do you all care so much?

Violet Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 03:16 PM EST

I didn't care for the long self-promoting intro/commercial that featured smiling Simon as the benevolent benefactor of the singers and Paula/Randy just clowning around. That seemed pretty egotistical. I do like Kara a lot and I love the dynamic between Kara and Paula (who were apparently room mates at one time). And I like that Kara doesn't let Simon shut her up.

Gee Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 03:13 PM EST

The bikini needs to go. This not what I want my 10 year old to watch. I think some of this garbage stuff needs to go. No dress up for competition. This is awful!

MotherHen Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 03:12 PM EST

Ya know... I serve my country, raise my kids, love my husband - but don't mess with me and my AI. It's stupid and funny and a great escape for a couple of hours a week. Love the new judge. Love the fact that Seacrest OUT high-fived a blind guy; and that bikini girl will be back. she'll get slaughtered in the next round. PRICELESS

Rashi Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 03:11 PM EST

Why do we waste national tv time watching contestants who do not make it in the first round?

I hate how people say "those" contestants increase entertainment value.

flexx Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 03:06 PM EST

stupid show, the judges are getting rich, & the dumb people watching keep them in business! try watching another show that has actual entertaiment, or learning potential...shows like IDOL, causes the Dumbing of America.......

Nee Nee Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 03:02 PM EST

I wasn't planning on watching this time, but I got sucked in. I am very grateful that there were less bad-singers and more focus on people who actually got through to Hollywood. The bad singing was fun at first, but when it became a circus of competing idiots, that's when I checked out of that part of the competition. I thought Kara was a nice addition. She at least gives a little more credibility to the judging. And bikini girl, while she really couldn't sing very well, accomplished what she set out to. We're all talking about it today. Overall, a slight improvment over the beginning of last season.

Toolie Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 03:01 PM EST

I love the show, but what I wonder is why is it that you don't show the black performers who audition as much as the white one's. I would love to see their auditions also, but for some reason you just show them making it thru the next round, please do better with this.

Vicki DeArmey Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 02:57 PM EST

I am not a youngster but I love watching American Idol. It can be entertaining, but last night let alot to be desired. First of all, I like a little chiding among the judges, but the constant bickering and acting very childish is too much. Secondly, the girl in the bikini?? What was that?? I mean it was so obvious she could not hold a tune, and this is not a beauty contest, or a bikini contest, and it was quite obvious that Randy and Simon's judgement was totally made with their testosterons. Yes, I was disappointed too with Ryan Secrests lack of self-control in resisting her advances. When Kara tried to show her how the song was song and quite beautifully at that the girl was very obnoxious. She does NOT have star quality. She should go knock on Hugh Hefners door if she wants a job. This part of the show was totally uncalled for. Please do not let this girl go on.
I like Kara, she is a breath of fresh air for the show. All this to say, I am looking forward to season #8.

Fran Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 02:54 PM EST

I enjoyed the new AI audition show much more this year than in the past. I was very happy to see the good auditions and to learn about the contestants who have made it thru to the Hollywood portion.
Past audition shows were often pathetic rather than funny.
I enjoy "getting to know" the contestants, hearing them sing and watching the growth and changes that occur as they move on....remember Clay Aiken's transformation...that's what makes Idol fun and interesting...

Kathy Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 02:45 PM EST

I have watched American Idol every season and I found that last night was disgusting. The Bikini girl was gross and I cannot believe that the producers allowed the part of Ryan and Bikini Girl kissing - my respect of Ryan has gone after that scene. Should have not been allowed. The new judge is horrible. She looked like she was bored the whole time and would not even look up at times. The poor young lady that was Kara's fan was just tossed aside by her - it was rude - Paula would have hugged her. I think I might not be watching the show till it gets down to the top ten and the contestants are taken seriously.

Andrew Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 02:26 PM EST

There were not enough bad auditions. Bad auditions are the best part of the show. It is very funny when you see these people that can't sing cry and get mad when they fail. They are pathetic. I wonder what they would do if something really bad was happening, like being in a combat zone or having to fight for something truely worthwhile.
AI, please show more bad auditions! really I am serious, it is the best part of the show.

Skip Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 02:25 PM EST

Great show. A bit too much of bikini girl's body being shown for me as I watched the segment with my 12 and 13 year old kids. That was TV-14 stuff.

beachpup Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 02:07 PM EST

I love when Randy hides behind his papers cause he's laughing. lol

Stephanie T. Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 02:06 PM EST

Auditioners have to stop with the costumes and the trashy ho outfits. It's American Idol, not Lets Make a Deal, uncensored. Monty Hall would even say hell no!
Kara seems to be a better singer than writer. Is there a reason why she has not had a sucessful singing career?

Somone please give Bikini Girl a gift certificate to Johnny Rockets!

David Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 02:06 PM EST

In this economy we need some good mindless silliness for entertainment

jill w Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 02:05 PM EST

ok so i definitely didnt think this season was as good as previous ones. i feel like they were trying to make paula seem much more sophisticated, yet she looked angry and disguisted the entire time. the new judge kinda came off not so nice and while i wanted to like her, i didnt. simon seemed nicer and randy stayed the same...but the whole dynamic is just bad now. there is no majority of votes. i dont understand how someone can just go to hollywood by getting a split vote. i'll watch but im not that happy with it.

Victoria Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 02:03 PM EST

I used to look forward to AI. Last night was a real disappointment. Too many chiefs and not enough idians. Another judge was not needed. She is nice eye candy but that is all. Bikini girl was eye candy and that was it also.. I think AI is a joke anymore. I am going to quit watching the auditions and wait unti they have picked the finals and probably watch some talent..

Mariela Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 02:01 PM EST

I couldn't believe that a JUDGE would be threatened by a competitor...I'm speaking of Kara the new judge of course...what an insecure woman!! She actually felt threatened by this "bikini girl," and she went from being a judge to being a high-school 15 yr old. She felt a need to somehow take the attention away from this girl by proving she could sing better! She is there as the professional to judge, not to "compete" against the person auditioning! She was obviously very threatened by the girl's looks, because notice she didn't react like that to anyone else. grrrr...women like that give a bad name to other women...hence cat fight! Please get her outta there....quick!!!

John Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 01:58 PM EST

The bimbo in the bikini was a joke and Simon's drool was disgusting. Another year of stupidity

Maria Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 01:55 PM EST

I only watched AI last night to see David Cook at the beginning of the show. For me there is and only will be ONE american idol and that is DAVID COOK! David Cook is a true artist!

Debbie Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 01:53 PM EST

Bikini girl had no voice, it was sick that Randy and Simon move this non talented "girl" on just because she was in a bikini, no voice, no body, built like a 12 year old, sick!

marty Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 01:52 PM EST

Cara was a welcome addition. The audio and green skin visual effects were great. Bikini girl was an insult to all fans. A nadir in Idol history.

Mary Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 01:51 PM EST

I only watched AI last night to see David Cook at the beginning of the show. For me there is an only will be only ONE american idol and that is DAVID COOK!

Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 01:48 PM EST

Ha! You are right, she didn't have breasts, or an ass! How old was she? Randy and Simon might almost qualify as pedophiles! Gross! Have some taste!

beachpup Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 01:48 PM EST

Actually the best part was the annoying little girl's reaction to David Cook beating Archuletta... that was priceless, and awesome. Ha ha ha ha ha

Loy Morales Castro Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 01:47 PM EST

The new judge really takes the fun out of the show. The camera time on her could be used for Paula and Simon fighting with each other. They didn't need to add a third judge....

jayne Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 01:45 PM EST

The beginning of the end - it may just be the last season. Can it get any more boring? And bikini girl with a "great bod"? Where are the boobs? And where is the voice. I might watch the last 3 episodes of the season but then again I might not.

pam Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 01:44 PM EST

I do not care for the new judge, she is obviously insecure and threatened she brings nothing get rid of her and get on with the show. The show is about talent why do we have to listen to yet another judge when the time could be better spent on the contestents it's about them. That who we tune in to see.

beachpup Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 01:42 PM EST

I was really excited to see the Dunkleman last night!

Tim Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 01:39 PM EST

Bikini girl had no body. It was gross. Eat a cheeseburger for christ's sake.

Charlie Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 01:34 PM EST

Have you ever thought of featuring
children like the catus cuties who have sung at the white house and opening football games among other places on this show?

Craig Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 01:33 PM EST

Am I the only one to notice that bikini girl had no breasts?

Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 01:33 PM EST

Kara was a great addition. She added another element to the show. I guess we can say that Paula has a buddy now. As far as bikini girl goes, how was she even sexy? She had no butt and no bust. Are we condoning anorexia or something? Add in the fact that she can't sing. This is obviously a gender issue, how us men portray women that show way too much skin as sex objects. Randy & Simon critiqued this girl on her sex appeal rather than her singing. If you guys looked back at the tape, there was a scene that was quite suggestive when Simon was moving his hand from underneath the table. How did that even make the cut?
Somebody should get fired for that. Bad move on American Idol to even show this clip. There was nothing funny about this and the sex appeal was distasteful. If your intention is to show a bikini babe, at least find a chick that has the assets. This was definitely set up. Think about it, if Kara REALLY hates this chick, then why did she later say that she had a nice body?

Kurt Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 01:28 PM EST

While I don't think people are losers for watching -- it's TV, after all, get over it -- I do have to say the show has lost it in my book. It's the same thing, only now, to stretch things out they repeat things constantly. First the contestant makes a pre-audition statement, then Seacrest rephrases it as a question, then the contestant repeats the statement to the judges using the same exact words(probably misspelled). The bloom is off this show, even with a new snarky judge. And the tone really is nasty. These episodes are really just about making fun of people. It almost belongs on a VH1 reality-trash marathon.

The show is an icon of our culture. We wat to see an unknown become a star. This harkens to finding Hollywood stars on the soda fountain stools. This desire transcends generations of Americans and we oldsters love the show. We have also come to love each in their unique way, Simon, Randy and the lovely Paula and we will come to love Kara whose premiere show clearly shows her potential. I loved her immediate comfort among the others and their embrace of Kara. The young of America have so much talent.

I gave up after an hour. After 7 seasons, the auditions just aren't entertaining not to mention the mindless backstories and endless commercials. Call me when they get to the top 36.

Bikini girl is a local stipper, real high class Idol...wow.

Reality TV rocks. I like Idol. Nothing like a balanced diet of entertainment to numb the mind.
Change the channel or turn it off if you're apalled.
I must admit the bikini girl was a little out of character for Idol but they were running commercials showing the preview.
If you're watching Idol for wholesome family entertainment then you've already been exposed to "showbiz is not pretty".
It's hilarious. The best part is watching people who can't sing and think they can. (Don't the have any friends who will provide them with honest feedback. NOT. Great for us.)
I wish someone was there to protect those not emotionally stable enough to defend themselves but here's where reality comes in. Producer's want ratings/advertising revenues. Viewers contacting the show with their disapproval will draw the line not posting to this forum.

For those that say "get a life" whats wrong with spending time with your family laughing at these fools. Yea most are terrible, and bikini girl was very anoying (great *** though), but all in was fun as usual and I'll be tunning in again tonight.

Come on guys. We know how the show works. The first few episodes are all about the people who generally suck at singing. At why is that? Because most of the viewers enjoy watching the train wrecks. Some people should have been told they can't sing, some were and just are in denial, some just want their 5 minutes to be on the "look how bad they are" reel. They always send through some people you know aren't going to make it. Sometimes because Simon can't keep it in his pants, and sometimes because they want to give a chance to those with likeable personalities. The formula is set, and those of you saying you're done because of a pick will be back next year, if not later this year. "Bikini Girl" was a flop. She had two good notes and a whole lot of bad. She didn't get through on singing skills, we all know that, but she'll be gone in the next round, so who cares. Hardly anything to get worked up about. The good stuff doesn't really happen until the final twelve.

I'm sorry Michael, but that "Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay" girl just chose a good song... she has a vibrato like CARMEN RASMUNSEN!!!

I personally liked the horror movie kid (a lot) and none of the girls really... where is my Kelly Clarkson? Where's the one I get goosebumps from listening to?

The show was very entertaining. I loved every second of it. Kara holds her own and the dynamics between the judges has not been lost. I think bikini girl achieved what she set out to achieve instant 5 mins in the spotlight...smart.Ryan was classic. Those who hate the show...you have a choice..don't you?

We watched AI and we found it very ammusing. We love to make fun of people and that is what the show seems to be all about. We were rolling on the floor laughing.

Were they screening for lap dancers?

Mike Caldwell Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 12:58 PM EST

I did not care for the newest judge. I believe Fox should have invested their programs future in a better candidate.

Clap, clap, clap.

Well said.

American Idle is more like American copy cat. Kind of like band with only a singer. And the band can't write music, let alone a hit song. Music isn't a high school popularity contest. It's not hard to wonder, however, how cheap and lame a show like this could become with likes of Simon, Paula, and Jaba the Hut. It's time to do right thing now, and move American Idol onto Nickelodeon, where it belongs. American Idol = A Puke Stain on a Silk Shirt you used to like.

The fact that American Idol allowed a girl to audition in a bikini takes it to a whole new low. While the girl has a great body, she can not sing and has to resort to acting like a slut (I mean, come on, a bikini and kissing Secrest?) to get her five minutes of fame. Why should the TV show endorse such shady actions?

I will tell you why...because it has gotten all of America to tune in and show an interest. The best way to ensure that American idol does not continue to stoop to such lows, is to turn off the show! Do not reward sketchy behavior!

Man, her Mom must be proud to have a daughter who sells her body. :(

Come on America, who are we kidding. Although, a few good performers have come out of American Idol, let's just admit that the show's main goal is to exploit those who truly have no chance of winning. Those of you who actually watch this show should face the fact that you have some type of sick voyeuristic fetish. Why would you take pleasure in seeing so many people perform badly just to be disparaged or praised by a panel of judges with limited or no talent.
