Zune 30s all freezing up at once. Ack! Aliens!

Dec 31, 2008, 09:00 AM | by Mike Bruno

Categories: Sci-Fi, Tech

Zune30_l The reports that all of the world's 30 GB Zune MP3 players have at once suddenly frozen up seem to be true. Internet message boards, including the one on the Zune website, are filled with panicky users wondering how to fix their Microsoft device once it seizes on the boot screen. So far, nothing is working. Rumors are flying. Is it a strange Y2K9 thing? Unlikely, given that the mass freezes occurred before the new year. Perhaps Apple has spread a virus to kill all of the Zunes? Also unlikely, given that the Zune doesn't pose a serious threat to the iPod's dominance. As difficult as it is to face, there's just one terrifying explanation that we'll all have to bring ourselves to face: Aliens have frozen our planet's Zunes and will use them to blackmail Bill Gates into apologizing for Windows Vista.

UPDATE: Reports are now coming in that the aliens have also taken control of the 80 GB models.

Any Zuners out there heading into New Year's Eve without their digital tunes? Anyone figure out a solution yet? Is there a better explanation than the alien one?

freedomzune23 Wed, Feb 25, 2009 at 07:02 AM EST

my zune will not start up it stay at the charger screen and when its done it goes to start up screen and does not go to menu at all

DJ Prolif Tue, Feb 17, 2009 at 11:52 AM EST

nah i have a 30 gig and nothing has happened to it... well yet atleast, so i guess im one of those lucky few (for once) but microsoft is natorious for glitches but in the end they allways fix it and give you some thing back in return for their forgiveness. i cant stand MAC and the ipod the only reason why the ipod is so big is because its been out for a while but in given time the ZUNE will be on top way more people have a PC then a MAC so its all good.

Jules Wed, Feb 11, 2009 at 06:14 PM EST

I got a 30 gig zune for my boyfriend for christmas and it froze up. i dont remember if it was before or after new years but it was close.. just plain froze up on the opening screen. we took it to geek squad at best buy and they couldn't even figure it out. had to get a new one.. a 120 gig

Bill Huebner Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 10:12 AM EST

My Zune also locked up just the way everyone has stated but I was able to fix mine without much fuss.

Simply remove the bottom plate and the 2 mini screws, pull the case apart then pull the cable from the battery. Now reinsert the cable back into the socket and replace the case back, screws and cover, recharge your Zune and your Alien problems are resolved. Enjoy.

Britnie Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 01:53 PM EST

Um hello! They said they were going to have the issue fixed ON January 1st. Mine worked fine until TODAY! I was just using it last night and the darn thing froze up over night. Honest to god if they don't get it fixed ASAP the company will have one angry chick on their hands and a not so very nice letter sitting in their inbox!

amy Tue, Jan 6, 2009 at 12:10 PM EST

We have 3 zune 30's in the house and not one of them froze up. They have all been used since new year's with no issue. I heard about the problem and got a little concerned but so far nothing has materialized. We love our zunes and will not buy into the apple nation.

DC Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 09:23 PM EST

mine works fine....

Resa24 Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 05:21 PM EST

Ok...so my Zune died two days before newyears, then the day after new year it started working and just today...1-5-09 it died again....why can't I get this thing to work properly?

Kyle Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 11:44 AM EST

Can I just say of how crappy Microsoft products have been lately. First there is Microsoft Vista that there still defending that one. Then Xbox 360's Red Ring of Death that kills up to a third or more of the consoles. Now the Zune? Does any body test this stuff. Oh by the way I've actually dealt with them on the Xbox 360 issue and for only $99 they'll fix it like new...what BS

LeapDayBaby Fri, Jan 2, 2009 at 09:43 PM EST

I'm a "Leaper" (born on February 29), and my iPod purchased in 2003 has handled two Leap Years already without a hitch. I have three Microsoft employees in my family, and I'd *still* buy another iPod over a Zune :)

macey Fri, Jan 2, 2009 at 05:09 PM EST

let ur zune battery die. change the date on ur zune to july 23rd 2008 and plug it back in. wait ABOUT 10 min and it should work again. both of mine did.

Wikinerd Fri, Jan 2, 2009 at 12:38 PM EST

Sounds more like phoning home to me

Everyone Fri, Jan 2, 2009 at 12:15 PM EST

Aliens? Seriously...seriously?

brittany Fri, Jan 2, 2009 at 12:21 AM EST

so i didn't find out that you needed to wait until jan 1st for your zune to zurn on so i opened it up so that i could unplug the battery. i completely messed up my zune. Two of the parts popped of in the procees and 8 years of downloading music is gone b/c i got a new cp and all my 8,000 songs are only on my now useless zune. videos of family in friends and pics are all on it. i listen to my zune maybe 98% of the time. all this b/c some idiot didn't think about the leap year!!!! this will happen in 2012 toooooooo! wt!ppl that are saying you could have waited one day please shut the hell up!

religious gloves Thu, Jan 1, 2009 at 06:26 PM EST

YAY!!!! IT WORKS AGAIN!!!!!!

cycopathbunny Thu, Jan 1, 2009 at 04:12 PM EST

I had an Ipod about 3 years ago and its only lasted me a month. my Zune has lasted me 2 years and then all of a sudden it stops working?! THIS IS NOT FAIR. ughhhh im going to die without my music
THIS SUCKSSSS

wtf? my baby is froze Thu, Jan 1, 2009 at 03:48 PM EST

my zune froze new years eva day. and i let it die three times, i pluged it in to charge everytime, and it would just go back to the start up screen. so last night i got on the internet and looked it up. it was all over yahoo. my bf's zune was frozen in the sames spot. we use his sisters as a ginny pig, for the hard restart or watever. it did not work. i have not been home to see if mine works. his does. and we broke his sisters. =[ but she did not mine. i just hope my baby works. all my fav pics are on there. love it.

Thu, Jan 1, 2009 at 03:45 PM EST

I think this is like Independence Day where the aliens took over all the satillites so they could broadcast the attach order.
Watch you Zunes carefully for the next few days and be prepared to 'duck and cover'!!! this is not a drill.

Bikram Thu, Jan 1, 2009 at 12:32 PM EST

Whats going on? I discharged my zune completely, plugged it in this morning at 11:15 Central time, and its still stuck at the loading screen!!!!! Help!

MegaMarble Thu, Jan 1, 2009 at 12:07 PM EST

11:05 Central Time, while charging after being dead, my 30 gigs workin =).

Lil Jin Thu, Jan 1, 2009 at 10:40 AM EST

I read al the forums & stuff was nervous to try the hard reset so I didn't. I just waited until the new years eve was over. At 3 a.m. today I connected my zune to the ac adapter & it would stay frozen. Then at 9:15 am today, after the battery empty, I reconnected my zune & now its back to normal. Hopefully this problem won't happen again. I hope other people's Zunes will return to normal also.

tj Thu, Jan 1, 2009 at 09:44 AM EST

Initially the hard reset worked for me, but then I made the mistake of connecting it to the PC. Now, all I get is a blank screen after it reboots( after the loading screen), then after turning it off or trying to connect to PC, it reboots and gets stuck on reboot screen again. So now I'm waiting for the battery to die, cross my fingers, and wait until tomorrow to try again.

Melegorm Thu, Jan 1, 2009 at 07:36 AM EST

Averse though I am to mess with the insides of any electronics, I must say that the "hard reset" worked a treat. The YouTube tutorial worked just fine and I'm back to listening to my Zune 30 this morning. Hope all Zune users are soon reunited with their favorite mp3 player!

Dan Thu, Jan 1, 2009 at 04:39 AM EST

Unreal. So it may not be a big deal to loose your mp3 player for a day but it is ridiulous that a company as large as MS can't get it right. Another reason why iPods will continue to dominate the market.

william Thu, Jan 1, 2009 at 03:41 AM EST

Ipod touch 2g is like a wii in a since with motion tech. thus better than anything out there. Hahaha but I still can't afford it so I have the broken up zune 30g.

Marion Thu, Jan 1, 2009 at 03:28 AM EST

Copied From Zune site itself. However i do like the aliens better.

Follow these steps:

1. Disconnect your Zune from USB and AC power sources.
2. Because the player is frozen, its battery will drain—this is good. Wait until the battery is empty and the screen goes black. If the battery was fully charged, this might take a couple of hours.
3. Wait until after noon GMT on January 1, 2009 (that's 7 a.m. Eastern or 4 a.m. Pacific time).
4. Connect your Zune to either a USB port on the back or your computer or to AC power using the Zune AC Adapter and let it charge.

Once the battery has sufficient power, the player should start normally. No other action is required—you can go back to using your Zune!

@iPods are Crap Thu, Jan 1, 2009 at 03:22 AM EST

Yeah...the iPod Touch TOTALLY isn't an innovation at all. Oh wait, what? All those other brands are scrambling to make their own now, too? Really? Give it up: iPod did it first, and did it best. I've had my iPod for 4 years and never had a single problem. Um, that's NOT crap, in my book.

Ipods are crap Thu, Jan 1, 2009 at 03:15 AM EST

Even with this glitch the zune is a million times better than the Ipod. The Ipod is just selling itself for its brandname now, practically no new inovations and they try to force u to upgrade every 6 months, LAME! A zune lasts you 3 years while Ipod users waste their money getting the next Ipod that comes out just because its smaller and has a smaller screen to view things on. So all you Ipod users who think zunes are gay should just go buy yourself another Ipod i hear the new one changes music when u shake it up and down what an innovation, don't think you can live without that.

MegaMarble Thu, Jan 1, 2009 at 02:12 AM EST

Alright. There is a solution if you read below.. they probably didn't forget about leap year, they probably didn't think that the 30 gigs wouldbe around very long, or they probably thought that one day 2 years later would effect the MS users so much that they would lose their faith entirely. Can't we all just.... get along? ... For a day until the zunes can reboot themselves.

mike Thu, Jan 1, 2009 at 01:00 AM EST

sounds like a bunch of microsoft employees giving us a bunch of bs on here!!!!!!!!

Roxy Thu, Jan 1, 2009 at 12:29 AM EST

It seems to be a leap year thing for sure. I also have a pay as you go GoPhone and it began to run a day behind on both the clock and calendar (saying Tues instead of the actual Wed).
Also, the city transit busses where I live all had TUESDAY on their auto marquees instead of WEDNESDAY. I think the Zune hit a similar snag.

Noah Thu, Jan 1, 2009 at 12:00 AM EST

The Zune freeze ups aren't related to the computers. My Zune hasn't been plugged into a computer in three-four weeks, but yesterday, it froze. Now it won't get past the Zune loading screen. Also, an interesting note. In the week before the freeze up, my Zune started glitching. When I'd change songs, the old song sometimes wouldn't stop and both songs would start overlapping! HELP!

mike Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 10:06 PM EST

do you really think they forgot about leap year!! all those tech and they forget their paid 6+ figs a yr not to come now people are we all really this stupid?!!

Chia Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 08:38 PM EST

Actually. I have a limited Halo 3 edition Zune. And there is a way to OPEN your zune and unhook the battery within. SO THANK YOU! I do know what I'm talking about.

TAMPA TIM Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 08:27 PM EST

For those who say that it's no big deal to lose the Zune for one day, you were not with me today. I was in Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa waiting to go in for surgery. With a IV in my arm, I couldn't read so I was depending on my Zune to keep my mind occupied for the two hours that I waited. I was a little upset when I realized that my Zune had froze and I had to lie there by myself. So before you go off about it not being such a big deal, think.

Robbie Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 08:05 PM EST

Okay this Chia person- needs to shut up! seriously shut up, not worth effort it took you to typed that stupid message. I have purchased 3 Zunes for my family and myself. So I expect to use it when I feel like it and that includes December 31! I am at work and this my way to get through my day, so if you don't have and I know you dont otherwise you would know you can not "unhook the battery" than mind your own business.

Chia Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 07:27 PM EST

This is ridiculous, how everyone is freaking out. Are you guys so plugged in that you can't unplug yourselves for one day?!! Just fricken wait. It is suppose to be all good at midnight. Plus, some people have opened their zunes and have unpluged and repluged the battery, which has seemed to work. If you absolutely can't live a day without your Zune.
I know. . . It will be hard. . . One day is like torture. Haha! Psh.
Get real. Just wait.

Randy Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 07:24 PM EST

I just got this news from Zune:

My Zune 30 is frozen on the boot screen, now what do I do?

You will need to reboot your device after noon GMT (that's 7 a.m. Eastern or 4 a.m. Pacific time) on Jan 1, 2009.

Please unplug your Zune (no AC or USB cables).

Because your Zune is frozen your device battery will begin draining, this is good.

The battery will eventually be fully depleted and the screen will go black.

After noon GMT on January 1 connect your AC power or USB cable such that the battery can begin charging again.

Once the Zune has enough battery to boot it should do so normally and you can go back to enjoying your Zune!

religious gloves Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 07:19 PM EST

my zune is AWESOME!!! 3o gig... woot woot... but it tis frozennn.... oh well... il see about it tomorrow...

Randy Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 07:17 PM EST

Remedy!?
I had to dismantle mine and unplug the battery. That fixed it for about two hours, then it froze again. I'll be trying the same thing on it.
Video to show you how to do this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gqM4qTpkzQw

Amir Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 07:15 PM EST

Yup, I turned my Zune on today and it totally froze, just went online to look up what to do and here it is...This is very strange.

Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 07:14 PM EST

Bill Gates is an a#$#$#hole! This is waht I get for buying a Microsuck product

Kaiulani Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 07:11 PM EST

It froze because 2008 was a leap year and the software did not account for it. According to MS, all will be fine tomorrow once your internal clock is sync'd.

mike Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 07:09 PM EST

it is my opinion that this freeze up is a 3.1 update glitch my zune 30 worked perfectly untill the 3.1 update! like the never ending updates for vista that cause pc crashes! they really don't care their making billions off us!

Brian Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 06:55 PM EST

I hate you microshaft... got shafted again....

boop Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 06:49 PM EST

what can we all do to fix this damn thing

Astonish Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 06:29 PM EST

I have a solution:

Buy an iPod

Juliana Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 06:01 PM EST

From the Zune website:

Early this morning we were alerted by our customers that there was a widespread issue affecting our 2006 model Zune 30GB devices (a large number of which are still actively being used). The technical team jumped on the problem immediately and isolated the issue: a bug in the internal clock driver related to the way the device handles a leap year. The issue should be resolved over the next 24 hours as the time change moves to January 1, 2009. We expect the internal clock on the Zune 30GB devices will automatically reset tomorrow (noon, GMT). By tomorrow you should allow the battery to fully run out of power before the unit can restart successfully then simply ensure that your device is recharged, then turn it back on. If you’re a Zune Pass subscriber, you may need to sync your device with your PC to refresh the rights to the subscription content you have downloaded to your device.

Sean Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 05:56 PM EST

Microsoft found the problem. It's a driver problem and your Zune should auto fix itself by January 1st.

Vickie Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 05:52 PM EST

For all you Zune haters, I have never had any prob's with my Zune. Until today, and I bet Microsoft will fix it. I love my Zune, and I can't live without it. Pleassssssse fix it soon

You Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 05:35 PM EST

"iPod users... your dumb."

Zunes are bad. Even without the freezing of the mini y2k they'll just break for no reason. iPods last WAAAAY longer.

i hate apple Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 05:34 PM EST

ok so i do hate apple but the zune sucks it alwise has the 3 things that made it better then the apple was easy transfer to the zune from a pc. sharing with friends and the radio. well with a simple app you can put on the i pod you dont have to uses i tunes again you can go and transfer music from any pc with out lousing music on your pod or the pc. you still cant have a radio:( but that solves the biggest down fall of the pod. and that music sharing that the zune has? it only lasts what 30 days? get the pod down load the floola app from floola.com and get the music from a frinds pc and its done. apple sucks most the time but in this case the pod is far better. use this problem today as a sighn to trade up for the pod. and to all thoes who still think the zune is better your dumb

gunnerply280 Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 05:34 PM EST

i dont know what happened because i havent connected my zune to my computer for almost 3 mos. hopefully its fixed soon!!!

Ep Sato Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 05:29 PM EST

Zune people, I really feel for you. I had a creative Zen (it was awesome, but broke after it was dropped), own an Ipod which is never used anymore (DRM SUCKS Donkey Dingo), and have opted for a cheapo third party DRM- free player that I got for $20 at Staples. DRM free is the only way to go.

Zune folks, don't sweat it too much. This stinks, but there's too many of you for the company to ignore and your Zunes will work again. Don't lose all faith. Microsoft is notorious for glitches (Red ring of death, Vista, last xmas's inability to handle all the xbox live traffic, etc), but they usually do something to make nice once it's fixed.

Apple people, please play nice. A lot of people (some of them are probably your friends) are really upset about this and it's not going to help if you gloat.

Zune-sters: If I sign up for the service can I download onto any other style player? Or just a Zune? I need a new download spot...

To all: Happy New Year from E.P. Sato!

Brian Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 05:26 PM EST

Yep, got my 30gb Zune and nothing. Froze up, let the battery die, tried to charge it and *BAM*..nothing. I love my Zune. My son has an Ipod and in the time I've had my Zune he's had 3 Ipod's. Not gonna bash anyone, the Zune just happened to be my choice. So here I am, typing without my headphones in. I, too, hope they get a fix out there quickly. Knowing Microsoft, I'm sure they will. It's a business and they have enough money to fix it all. I'd love to be able to turn it in for one with more memory. Until then, I'll just have to deal with it. So goes life.

vickie Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 05:24 PM EST

my zune froze this morning around the same time and i thought i messed it up somehow. im surprised to see everyone had the same problem. i cant believe this, im madd

Hahah.. well, so, my 30 Gig froze right..? and i was reading this, and it hasn't even been a day and people are freaking out... calm down and relax. MS will fix it or compensate us somehow im sure, and to all you iPod users... your dumb.

Happy New Year Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 04:28 PM EST

Hi Big John,

I used to think Microsoft was good, but when my x-box drive crashed after 6 months & 2 days and Microsoft wouldn't replace it, it really made me think otherwise. I have had apple products more than 1 month out of warranty and they replaced the parts with no questions asked.

Another point, if you like to spend LOTS of time getting everything to work, you purchase microsoft products. If you just want things that work well, right out of the box you purchase APPLE products.

Good Luck Big John, you are going to need it!!

BIG JOHN Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 04:18 PM EST

IPODS ARE TRASH MAC IS TRASH

fiona Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 04:14 PM EST

Someone actually bought a Zune???

Big John Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 03:55 PM EST

i took the zune apart unpluged the battery waited 10 min and now the zune is fine (TAKING THE BATTERY LEAD OFF DOES WORKKKKKK

Wickedtypo Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 03:27 PM EST

Like other people here my Zune 30gb also froze. After thinking it was just mine to reading google results around 10am this morning of other people with the same problem, to being P!$$ed off when my 21 year old son laughed at me when he was the one that gave it to me a few months ago, to crying (wow seems like the phases of someone's death doesn't it?) I've came to the conclusion that if the internal date and time of the Zune doesn't unfreeze the player, Microsoft may be very very wise to do a total product recall, whether it has a warranty or not, in exchange for a 120gb Zune at any retail store local of the Zune consumer. If not, my name will be listed on a lawsuit.

duddddeee Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 03:18 PM EST

WHATS GOING TO HAPPEN!!
my zuness messed up!
freezes at the start up screen...

Melkus Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 03:18 PM EST

DO NOT USE THE "DO IT YOURSELF" REMEDY

This could potentially void your warranty - even if they make it an exception in this case. It also won't work if you try to resync it, so just wait for the Microsoft remedy and save yourself the headache later.

SHERRI Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 03:16 PM EST

I HAVE A 80 GIG AND IT WAS WORKING GREAT THIS MORNING , WENT TO PLUG IT INTO THE LAP TOP AND IT FROZED UP AND NOW I AM LOST WITHOUT IT ... WHAT CAN WE DO TO UNFREEZE IT?? ANY SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM

Wow. Went to charge my Zune for tonight's party, the plug in screen came on, went back to check it after a few hours, Froze on the Zune screen with loading bar. Better have one of my friends w/ a IPOD bring the music tonight..how sad. :(

JT Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 02:58 PM EST

Microsoft: Vista, Red Ring of Death, Zune fiasco.

IPod: Overpriced hardware, proprietary music format, DRM, iTunes takes over your computer.

Sansa + Amazon MP3 = Heaven.

machineshop Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 02:23 PM EST

found a fix here but DO NOT sync it until MS releases a fix for it. In the meantime, you can get your player going again:

Glendower Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 02:16 PM EST

This is crazy! Mine froze this morning and I thought that there might have been a static shock or something that goofed it up. This is sick. How can they break Zunes like this? I hate to think that they left a security hole or something so that they could access them... is there anyone who has the wrong date on their PC or Zune who has avoided this problem? I'm completely baffled by this.

Pede Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 02:14 PM EST

Lalala, this is why I LOVE all of my Creative products. iPods will never take up residence in my home and now I know not to buy Zune stuff either. Just bought my son the new Creative Zen player, its absolutely adorable, easy to use and has an expandable memory, so he will pretty much never run out of space for his music.

Betz Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 02:09 PM EST

Music hath charms to soothe the savage bre@$t. but what happens when a ZUNE freezes???? A bre@$t unsoothed is a beast!

Cue the music: Toni Braxton in the new ZUNE commercial: UNFREEZE MY ZUNE.....

"Unfreeze my ZUNE....say I'll play it again....Undo the screen....black as my heart when it died at midnight! Dry up these tears I cried.....UNFREEZE MY ZUNE!"

Cut to MS CEO: "We are installing extra GBs in your 30GB ZUNE as a special gift for you! Happy 2009 "

See I smelled the ponypoop and THERE was a pony!!! Think pink; think positive.

JoeSephus Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 02:08 PM EST

mine bricked on me and it was plugged into the wall ,it hasnt been on a pc for like 2 months at least ,so it seems to be a "hardwired" trouble like a timebomb if you will

my 80 gig is froze up also. so not just 30s like they thought.

Bethany Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 01:09 PM EST

Every piece of technology is going to have bugs. I'm not getting enjoyment that people who trusted MS can't access their music - I'm just enjoying seeing that company see backlash from their craptastic software.

And yes, I DO have a pedestal and will continue to have one, even though Apple also has problems. I'm on my fourth iPhone since July, but I couldn't live without it.

Shame on Microsoft Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 01:09 PM EST

My hubby and I got both of our daughters a 30 gig zune for christmas. And this S*%&%&^* is what we got in return. Thank you Bill Gates.

Shardy Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 01:04 PM EST

Finally got through to a support person...to get an apology, a case number and "call back tommorow". Wow, great customer service guess Microsoft is hoping the new date will help their problem....funny....went from 360 to PS3...and now Zune to IPOD.....

For all the ZUNE haters here is what I have to say. I bought it 4 days after it came on the market a few years ago and this is the FIRST issue EVER with it. It loads songs faster, it has a RADIO, it has WiFi, it picks up the album cover faster, the battery lasts for ever!.. and on and on... I had 3 ipods and have since given them ALL away... I would never own one of those ever again. I had nothing but problems with the Ipod and the battery life is crap...

This is one of the only problems I've had but I feel it's probably time to start saving up for an Ipod if Microsoft does get it fixed soon.

I did the Hard reset previously posted and it is STILL workin.. OBVIOUSLY dont sink it with the software until an update comes from Microsoft for I believe that the software is the cause of the issue. However, if you perform a hard reset and do not sync it you will be up and running...

IM CRACKING UP THAT POST IS HILLARIOUS!

I HAVE AN IPOD...I DONT KNOW WHAT I WOULD DO IF IT FROZE!

I was exasperated with the situation so tried letting my 30GB die after it froze at the boot screen. Read somewehere to let it charge 3 exact hours. This did not work. I remember it was 2 AM. Freaking weird.

ITdepartment Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 12:43 PM EST

jared, it must charge for one half hour before it turns on again. But you will have to read my previous post if you want to update the zune

I'm an iPod person who will not gloat. My new iPod Touch sucks -- two days out of the box it won't take a charge or connect to a computer. Not the first iPod problem I've had. Now I know why my friends refer to the company as Crapple.

I'm from the Apple flock, but haven't any white pedestal to descend from. I was born an uncommon blend of apple user and person who still has a brain...

My bro has a Zune, which served him fine for a while. Then it went on the fritz and refused to even sync with his XP laptop. It seems to be finally working again, and I'd hate for that to change...any ideas yet on the root cause of this issue?

jared Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 12:39 PM EST

So i just got a 30GB for christmas and it froze at the Zune screen with a loading bar at the bottom and i let the battery die and plugged it in to charge and now its just sitting at a screen with what looks like a plug into an outlet inside of the batter symbol. this is BS to the highest extent.

Steve Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 12:37 PM EST

Did the battery trick, reconnected, froze again. They better friggin fix this BS.

ITdepartment Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 12:27 PM EST

Looks like microsoft is giving all of us 80gb zunes as discounted prices.

Joseph Longo Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 12:24 PM EST

After doing a hard reset as described below, DO NOT HOOK UP TO YOUR PC!!!!!!
It freezes again, and only goes past the boot screen to a blank screen.

ITdepartment Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 12:20 PM EST

Well, it appears as thought the battery removal and hard reset actually works for about 10 mins before it happens again, basically plugging it back into the computer ruins it again. The solution i found was disabling my network connection, disable windows auto sycronize time with internet, change the date, then doing the hard reset on the zune, after that i plugged it into my computer, updated my tunes and its working great. Oh, i also reinstalled zune software but im not sure that did anything.

Mine hasn't frozen up! Of course I haven't turned it on yet......I think my IPOD is going to do the trick today....although I will miss the radio.....

You remember what the Riddler tried to do in the Batman movie where he sent out a signal to control the population? Yeah, that's what I'm thinking.

Rex Racer Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 11:59 AM EST

My 80GB Zune is working fine.
