VH1's '100 Greatest Hard Rock Songs': Rank the Top 10

Dec 29, 2008, 04:00 PM | by Dan Snierson

Categories: Lists-o-rama!, Music, On a Scale of 1 to 10

Metallica_l Last week we asked you which anthems you expected and/or wanted to see on VH1’s 100 Greatest Hard Rock Songs. Before the five-day festivities get underway tonight, we offer up another challenge: Rank the top 10, in order of oh-my-god-this-song-rocks-so-hard-iness. The fine folks at VH1 have agreed to reveal those 10 tunes exclusively to you, PopWatchers. Here they are, in alphabetical order:

• AC/DC's "Back in Black"
• Aerosmith's "Walk This Way"
• Black Sabbath's "Paranoid"
• Guns N' Roses' "Welcome to the Jungle"
• Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love"
• Metallica's "Enter Sandman"
• Motörhead's "Ace of Spades"
• Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit"
• Van Halen's "Runnin’ with the Devil"
• The Who's "Won’t Get Fooled Again"

We know how we would arrange our list. (Hint: “Back in Black,” "Runnin' with the Devil," and “Welcome to the Jungle,” you may proceed to the head of the class.) But who cares what we think? Give us your top 10, using these selections. (And yes, if you hate VH1’s picks, you also can make a list using hard rock songs of your choosing.)

Ok people. as long as we are listing such a broad spectrum of " hard rock", what about RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE. I think most would agree that Tom Morello is a kick ass guitar player!!!

ns Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 01:15 AM EST

My biggest problem with VH1's top 10 is that 8 of the 10 songs aren't even the best song by that particular band.

The two that are the best should be #1 and #2: Whole Lotta Love and Welcome to the Jungle.

karen b, join us again when you've finished middle school.

oh dear - ONE is way better then Enter Sandman and Walk this Way?!? I love Aerosmith but Walk this Way?!? I think Dream On would have been better.

1-Zepplin
2- Black Sabbath
3- AC/DC
4 - The WHO
5 - Van Halen

And the other five well it could have been way better. Good songs but top 10 material - 'eh
Who took this poll for VH1, anyway?

Cricket Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 09:52 AM EST

to CC: Soundgarden is awesome but they wouldn't exist without Led Zeplin's influence. LZ is never #2.

to Matt: good Metallica choices but you forgot For Whom the Bell Tolls and, despite it being actually kind of mainstream, One is a darned good song.

to everyone else: Unfortunately, lists like these can never please everyone because there are too many interpretations of what a "hard rock" band is. It really depends on age and preference. Personally, I feel that a song should be chosen on the required elements of instrument use not age or genre. Can you deny Magic Man by Heart because it's so old? HECK NO! Just like you can't deny Smells Like Teen Spirit because it's "grunge".

My choices:
1. Whole Lotta Love - LZ (there is a reason they are always referred to as the mighty LZ)
2. everything else ;-)

Matt Truesdell Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 09:28 AM EST

For all you people who put, enter sandman on your top ten. You should all be ashamed. Below are a list of metallica songs you should have chose.
1. Master of Puppets
2. Battery
3. Sanitarium
4. Ride the Lightning

Vicki Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 09:10 AM EST

AC/DC's "Back in Black"
Aerosmith's "Walk This Way"
Black Sabbath's "Paranoid"
Van Halen's "Runnin’ with the Devil"
Motörhead's "Ace of Spades"
The Who's "Won’t Get Fooled Again"
Guns N' Roses' "Welcome to the Jungle"
Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love"
Metallica's "Enter Sandman"
Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit"

wendy Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 09:04 AM EST

Am I the only one who HATES walk this way? That is not hard rock.

C.c. Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 08:35 AM EST

No1 should be Soundgarden-Black hole sun!
No2 Led Zeppelin!
Pearl jam, Alice in chains and Nirvana would rpobably complete my top 5. Now as for the rest, I can't say.

Eric Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 08:16 AM EST

Prediction on how VH1 will rank them:
1. Guns N' Roses' "Welcome to the Jungle"
2. AC/DC's "Back in Black"
3. Black Sabbath's "Paranoid"
4. Metallica's "Enter Sandman"
5. Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit"
6. Motörhead's "Ace of Spades"
7. Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love"
8. Van Halen's "Runnin’ with the Devil"
9. Aerosmith's "Walk This Way"
10. The Who's "Won’t Get Fooled Again"

How I would rank these 10:
1. Black Sabbath's "Paranoid"
2. Metallica's "Enter Sandman"
3. Guns N' Roses' "Welcome to the Jungle"
4. AC/DC's "Back in Black"
5. Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit"

The rest wouldn't even be on my top ten list.

Oisín Byrne Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 07:55 AM EST

1-Killing in the name-Rage against the machine
2-Velvet Revolver-Slither
3-Metallica-Enter Sandman
4-Black Sabbath-Iron Man

6-Black Stone Cherry-Blind Man
7-Wolfmother-joker& The Thief
8-Guns N' roses-Paradise City
9-Led Zeppelin-Kashmir
10-Deep Purple-Smoke On The Water

garciamomma Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 06:14 AM EST

1. Guns N' Roses' "Welcome to the Jungle
2. Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love"
3.Metallica's "Enter Sandman
4.Black Sabbath's "Paranoid"
5. AC/DC's "Back in Black
6.The Who's "Won’t Get Fooled Again
8.Aerosmith's "Walk This Way"
9.Motörhead's "Ace of Spades"
10.Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit"

Ace of Spades is for hardcore metal people, and as much as I LOVE Smells like Teen Spirit, it IS grunge and doesnt belong in the top ten in this instance.

This list was scientifically rated strictly on how bad a headache I get from thrashing my head while listening to these songs.

Lisztes Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 04:34 AM EST

Bon Jovi is hard rock ??? ROTFL! We might argue whether they are soft rock or guitar pop, but "Hard Rock"?? Pathetic.

J'rome Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 02:20 AM EST

It's late. I'm tired. But, here's a bit...realizing that some may not be considered 'hard rock.' Loved seeing NIN's 'Closer' on a list here. Not a Van Halen fan.

1. Sweet Child O' Mine (G&R)
2. Whole Lotta Love (Zep)
3. Smoke On the Water (Deep Purple)
4. More (Sisters of Mercy)
5. She Sells Sanctuary (The Cult)
6. Paranoid (Sabbath)
7. Communication Breakdown (Zep)
8. 2+2 (Bob Seger System--someone should cover this hard--tough to find, on YouTube though)
9. Train Kept a Rollin' (Aero)
10. Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress (The Hollies...probably not hard rock, but it rocks pretty hard)

"Enter Sandman" over "One" or "Master of Puppets?" Lame, VH1.

tuneman Mon, Dec 29, 2008 at 11:38 PM EST

ha ha ha. the who and led zepplin are hard rock. They're only considered classic rock by people too young to have been there the first time. Nirvana, god bless 'em, were NEVER hard rock. Bon Jovi? No way.

seattle_girl Mon, Dec 29, 2008 at 10:43 PM EST

Get out of my head Dan Snierson. Top 3, in order:
1. Back in Black
2. Runnin' with the Devil
3. Welcome to the Jungle
After that, gets a little murkier:
4. Whole Lotta Love
5. Won't Get Fooled Again
6. Walk This Way
7. Sub out Paranoid for Iron Man instead
8. Enter Sandman
9. Smells Like Teen Spirit
10. Anything BUT Ace of Spades (I could go with Love Hurts instead)

Joe Mon, Dec 29, 2008 at 06:44 PM EST

"Ace of Spades"?, I wouldn't put it in the top 20 let alone top ten. Where's "Purple Haze"?, there's too many other songs that could be in the top ten than "Ace of Spades"

jp Mon, Dec 29, 2008 at 06:28 PM EST

i'd categorize bon jovi as soft rock before i called them hard rock

jp Mon, Dec 29, 2008 at 06:26 PM EST

10 motorhead - that song is terrible

9 Guns n roses
8 ac/dc
7 led zeppelin
these three songs have been played out to the point they're almost unlistenable

6 aerosmith
5 nirvana
4 van halen
3 metallica
2 sabbath
1 the who

Lisa Mon, Dec 29, 2008 at 06:20 PM EST

The Wizard by Black Sabbath is probably the best heavy metal song ever. Well, anything by Sabbath (with Ozzy ONLY) is great. War Pigs, Iron Man, Fairies Wear Boots!

Jelana Mon, Dec 29, 2008 at 05:48 PM EST

Where the frak is Stairway to Heaven?

flea Mon, Dec 29, 2008 at 05:32 PM EST

O.K. I am not following the rules because this list is not so hot. What about Love Hurts, a few Heart songs, QUEEN!!! Agree with Zombie!!! Nirvana, WTF!

BellaFanatic Mon, Dec 29, 2008 at 04:54 PM EST

Ok. This is a Hard Rock article. I do love these bands, but I hate it for you people, Bon Jovi? Poison? Nirvana? NOT HARD ROCK people. Metallica, Pantera, AC/DC!!! Even Aerosmith? When did they become hard rock?

Jayel Mon, Dec 29, 2008 at 04:50 PM EST

karenb, honey, those are hair bands. There's nothing wrong with them, but they're not representative hard rock. Vh1's list isn't perfect - 'Enter Sandman' may be the most overrated hard rock song ever - but these are hard rock songs.

RTA Mon, Dec 29, 2008 at 04:47 PM EST

Who
Led Zep
AC/DC
Aerosmith
Van Halen
Nirvana
Black Sabbath
Metallica
G&R
Motorhead

karen b Mon, Dec 29, 2008 at 04:41 PM EST

VH1 has messed this up entirely. Hard Rock is Bon Jovi, Poison, Warrant, Ratt, Van Halen, Motley Crue...
NOT classic rock, grunge, or heavy metal.

Mel Mon, Dec 29, 2008 at 04:41 PM EST

1. Smells Like Teen Spirit
2. Whole Lotta Love
3. Won't Get Fooled Again
4. Paranoid

9. Ace of Spades
10. Runnin' With the Devil

karen b Mon, Dec 29, 2008 at 04:38 PM EST

What??????? Nirvana? The Who? Motorhead?

Those are grunge, classic rock, and heavy metal, respectively!!!

Hard Rock is Bon Jovi, Motley Crue, Van Halen, Extreme, Poison, Warrant, Ratt...

Sheesh. When VH1 screws it up, they really screw it up.

Johnny D Mon, Dec 29, 2008 at 04:33 PM EST
