'SNL': Amy Poehler's farewell

Dec 14, 2008, 01:33 PM | by Adam B. Vary

Categories: Saturday Night Live

Amy Poehler's final episode of Saturday Night Live, hosted by a game Hugh Laurie, was, as usual, a hit-and-miss evening, with many of the show's best laughs coming from Poehler herself. Just when it looked like the show had missed a golden opportunity for political comedy with a tepid cold open about recently indicted Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, Poehler and fellow 'Weekend Update' co-host Seth Meyers brought the big time funny with a rendition of "Really!?! with Seth & Amy" all about the foul-mouthed, comically coiffed pol. (Poehler: "The hair? Really?! It looks like you're wearing a toupee that's also wearing a toupee!") The bit was so funny, it was that much sadder to realize we'll probably never see it again -- or if we do with a new 'Update' co-host, it won't quite be the same without Poehler's puckish bite.

When Poehler dropped her trademark smirk to announce her departure from the show, she got all soft and genuine and grateful, and I kinda wanted to leap through the TV and give her a big ole hug for so many years of snarky giggles. That is until Fred Armisen, as visually impaired New York Gov. David Patterson, wandered into Poehler's shot, and, like Poehler herself, I found myself overcome with snarky giggling. Of course, since SNL alums seem so happy to drop in on the show -- like Maya Rudolph appearing last night for one final round of gum-smacking gossip on 'Bronx Beat' with Poehler -- this most likely really isn't the last time we'll see Poehler grace Studio 8H at 30 Rockefeller Plaza. Check out her hilarious "Really!?!" routine below.

The holiday episode did manage to pull off two amusing non-Poehlerized sketches -- love that not-so-passive-aggressive Christmas dinner -- but she's still leaving some serious shoes (or, really, wigs) to fill. Tell me, PopWatchers, what have some of your favorite Amy Poehler moments been from SNL? What would you most like to see from Poehler now that she's a free agent? And did you think, like I did, that Kanye West was a stand-up guy for still performing even though he so clearly was feeling all with the flu-y?

Does anyone know where I can find a video of the Lamps sketch?? I've been looking, but no luck :(

scott Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 06:37 PM EST

kanye cannot sing. That is why he and all rappers rap.

mak Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 03:05 PM EST

Rick, Rick,Rick,Rick,Rick,Rick,Rick,Rick,!

Jason Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 02:35 PM EST

The right-wing comments on this post are hilarious!

KG Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 01:27 PM EST

lost tina, lost maya, and now amy :( but kristen and casey look promising. i used to like kanye, then he started singing. gaaah. just bec you can rap doesn't mean you can sing. part of me wishes he could sing at american idol just so simon, randy & the rest of the AI audience can give him a reality check. that was so bad. love the christmas dinner sketch. when amy started saying goodbye and said "umm" a jillion times, i thought i was gonna cry bec here she was showing a rare genuine side... and then fred armisen popped up haha. i was laughing yet scared at the same time bec i know the following day people will complain about how fred & snl were making fun of blind people, taking the limelight away from amy's moment to say goodbye. and seeing the articles from this morning, i was right. but thank you popwatch for making this one all about amy.

Mr. Beepo Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 01:25 PM EST

Amy is not funny. I never could underdtand why she always laughed at her own jokes and reacted as if it was the first time she ever read them. Not funny. Won't be missed. In fact, its time for SNL to go away. You don't think they'll make fun of Obama do you?

kana Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 12:47 PM EST

Wow, the amount of hate around here is alarming. Does it really do any good to be that negative? She's left the show, your venom isn't going to get her kicked off. If you can't stand her or SNL that much, then why are you reading a blog post about her and taking the time to respond? People amaze me. Redirect your energy.

To answer the question: "you are not mentally prepared for this backflip". i will also miss her hyper kid character and her Updates. Her cartoon on Nickelodeon is HILARIOUS.

jojo Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 12:19 PM EST

Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick......

Whut-whut Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 12:13 PM EST

I will miss the one-legged character she played, and of course, I will miss Weekend Update. I thought Amy, Tina Fey and Jimmy Fallon were the best ever. The show won't be the same. Sudekis is the only one left that I even think is funny....

David Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 12:11 PM EST

I won't miss Amy at all. She annoyed me to no end. I'm sure she'll become a big star and make lots of money.

Sadie Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 11:44 AM EST

I'll miss her. My faves are Jodi from Bronx Beat ("the whole city smells like a pickle"), the techno singer on Deep House Dish who sang about a brown eye, and Amber. She was also in one of my favorite skits featuring Hugh Laurie -- the Most Haunted spoof where he farted and they kept replaying it. I agree that Laurie's comedic skills were lost this past weekend. I think the show will do okay, though -- Kristen Wiig and Casey Wilson are pretty good.

Love Hugh Laurie Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 11:22 AM EST

Hugh Laurie is absolutely brilliant - incredibly funny. How could they have wasted his talents so badly on this show?

A Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 11:00 AM EST

I absolutely loved Amy!!! She was one of the best on the cast, and was one of my favorites. She's so talented, and also, I know people have opinions, but how in gods name could you make a connection to Obama? Just get over it people! Amy was talented, like everyone on the show. I think you must be mad because you aren't up there yourself.
My favorite Amy "Moment" would have to either be her as Hilary Clinton or the one legged Rock of Love Girl. Ahh, who am i kidding. anything Amy did was awesome. :) Can't wait for the new sitcom :)

Impeach Obama Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 10:38 AM EST

Just as Obama is the worst president ever, Amy was the worst SNL cast member ever. Glad she's gone.

Impeach Obama... now!

Garry Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 10:00 AM EST

She's an unfunny coke addict. Good riddance.

Winona Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 09:36 AM EST

I will definitely miss Amy Poehler - I really loved her Britney Spears filing for divorce skit.

You Idiots Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 08:57 AM EST

Hey Morons!!!!!It was written for Armisen to get in frame. They do have more than one camea. And Kanye can't sing, but at least he tries (yeah I'm talking to you Ashley Simpson and others).

Sandra Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 08:45 AM EST

What a waste of Hugh Laurie. The man is very funny (watch ANY of his Fry and Laurie, Blackadder stuff). And why did they insist, with the exception of the Bronx Beat skit, that he use the American accent. The ladies from Bronx Beat said it best. The accent is sexy, could listen to it all day!! And yes, the Lamp skit was beyond lame and they knew it.

Sara Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 08:35 AM EST

I was actually expecting better from Saturday's show - Hugh Laurie is usually a fantastic comedian. Watch clips from "Blackadder", "A Bit of Fry and Laurie", or his awards show speeches, and you can't help but be a bit disappointed in the SNL appearance. His opening monologue didn't really hit at all (a bit too British, I think) and it seemed like he knew it. And yes, the lamp skit was lame.

gary Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 07:54 AM EST

The funniest part of the show was Kanye West. He TOTALLY SUCKS! Dude, give it up. You can't sing.

jen Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 04:20 AM EST

i was JUST about to start crying when amy was saying her goodbyes, and then fred walked in front of the camera again and i started cracking up. oh snl... :) i'm gonna miss amy SO much on the show, and she's the last female cast member from when i started watching the show to leave. molly, cheri, ana, rachel, tina, maya, and now amy.

DanOregon Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 03:49 AM EST

Poehler's best bit was Dennis Kucinich. She was a powerhouse on the show, but the skits Saturday were really pretty bad. Would have been better if they just put "Blagoeivich" on QVC selling off jobs, contracts etc. and having people call in and him cussing them out. The writing is so up and down this year.

Jerry Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 03:05 AM EST

I absolutely LOVED her Hillary Clinton. She got that woman's mannerisms down, and the passive aggressiveness she not so subtly had towards Obama during the presidential campaign...LOL, she was hilarious as Hillary.

Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 02:49 AM EST

The show itself was pretty bad. Hugh Laurie did a crappy job and is not funny at all. Love Amy though and wish her all the best.

Lauren Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 02:35 AM EST

Man I will miss Amy! And although it's been years (mainly since Seth became head writer and just does weekend update) but I will forever miss the Needlers.....that skit was priceless! I actually loved WU these last couple of years and I will miss the on screen chemistry of Seth and Amy.

mister f Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 01:39 AM EST

"maybe I'm alone here, but when Armisen jumped into frame when Poehler was saying goodbye, I got really pissed off."

Me too! I don't know if that was supposed to be the bit or he/producers didn't want Amy to cry, but that went 1 minute sour! He was trying waaayyy hard to squeeze every last laugh out of that NY Governor (who btw, is not funny if you're not from New York) and it sucked we didn't get to hear more of Amy's farewells.

sea_gal Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 01:07 AM EST

RICK! RICK! RICK!!

Paz Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 12:00 AM EST

The Sarah Palin rap was priceless. Also, she was hysterical as Michael Jackson and as Dennis Kucinich.
I actually liked last night's episode, probably because Hugh Laurie is so good at anything. Also Kristen Wiig's usual annoying characters were kept to a minimum, for once.
Now what reason do I have to keep watching this damn show?

Nick Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 11:48 PM EST

maybe I'm alone here, but when Armisen jumped into frame when Poehler was saying goodbye, I got really pissed off.

to upset in NL Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 11:32 PM EST

I understand why you're feeling a bit neglected, so a helpful hint about watching the video - it's more than likely posted on SNL's website anyways. Hulu has better quality and less sudden-removal-of-clips than YouTube, and I don't know - maybe you can't embed videos from the SNL site.? So anyways, hope you get to watch the clip!

Dano Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 10:38 PM EST

love hugh laurie, but the show was horrible...SNL harldy ever manages to be funny now days...watching saturdays episode was soo pianful! although I will miss amy poehler

JGBell, Olympia, Wa Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 10:35 PM EST

Amy truly is a REAL slut. Butt, such a versatile slut. When she was good, she was a real Ba-a-ad mother. When she was ba-a-ad, she was ABSOLUTELY delicious. Amy and Tina - what in hell a ma-nahdge-a-troy that would be - even if we were caught just looking.

naomi Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 10:15 PM EST

I loved amy! :(((( I hope she comes back sometimes!

upset in NL Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 10:13 PM EST

I subscribed to this magazine for more than 5 years in total and I stopped. Why? Because EW constantly neglects its Canadian residents! And now You post vids using HULU which cannot stream outside the US. Screw you - you aren't getting my money anymore.

Lindsay Coleman Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 09:52 PM EST

Amy Poehler was so great. She is irreplaceable.

NF Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 09:36 PM EST

I agree with whoever commented on kanye west's singing skills...brutal! my wife and i were simultaneously cringing and laughing during both of his songs, but especially the first one. stick to rapping, bud, leave the singing to people with talent.

Jon Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 09:34 PM EST

No one can replace Amy Poehler on Weekend Update, but why not bring in Josh Meyers to co-anchor with Seth? Can't think of anyone to have better chemistry with Seth, than his own brother.

mscisluv Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 09:16 PM EST

I don't think she's a "free agent"...I'm pretty sure that NBC developed a sitcom for her.

Amanda Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 09:08 PM EST

My favorite Amy Poehler moment was the very first "Really!?!" segment. Michael Vick was the subject. It was pre-dog fighting scandal; when he committed more humane crimes like getting caught in the airport in Miami with weed. It was so funny that I watched it back about 50 times and I am sure I peed my pants a little.

I Love Lamp Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 09:05 PM EST

Dancing lamps, one of the worst skits EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BTW Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 09:04 PM EST

I still miss Rachel Dratch. Can she come back. The drooling freak with the arm coming out her her head still gives me laughing nitemares.

Smoochie Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 08:58 PM EST

The news was hilarious. Armison was great too. Hugh Laurie is super. The skit with Amy and Maya even had Hugh cracking up. I loved the ols skits where Amy was the one legged hoochie mama. But I love Amy all the time!!!!

elena Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 08:56 PM EST

Is it weird that I still think of Amy Poehler as GOB's wife on Arrested Development? I found her so funny as the army gal with seals I had to know who she was...and then I discovered her on SNL, a show that I began re-watching because of her. Plus, I fangasm'd when I found out she and Will Arnett were married in real life. They're possibly two of the funniest people in the world.
My favorite Amy character? Herself. Those "Really?!" that she does with Seth are hilarious, and the Sarah Palin Rap is my favorite viral video of 2008. I just hope her new NBC show is as amazing as she is!

SarahPalin2012 Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 08:53 PM EST

The rap Amy did about Sarah Palin was hilarious, and she was bloatedly pregnant at the same time !!!
"...how ya feel Eskimos??.." !!!

Amber is my favorite. "Yeah, I farted. Jealous?"

Melissa Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 08:11 PM EST

I for one am glad she is gone. No one can run a joke into the ground quite like Amy Poehler. She got so annoying hyperactive it was hard to watch her in anything these last few seasons

bring back UCB!
her best character was colby of course

Andrea Lopea Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 08:05 PM EST

Xavier Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 07:57 PM EST

At least we can still see, er hear, Poehler on Nickelodeon as Bessy HIggenbottom :)

Jay Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 07:11 PM EST

Does anybody remember when she played Michael Jackson a few years ago? With the black umbrella during Weekend Update with Tina Fey and Jimmy Fallon? It was a long time ago, but I still remember how hard it made me laugh.

Moxie Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 07:00 PM EST

To the poster below me, why don't YOU learn reading comprehension before you mouth off. He made mention of it. What makes it more ebarrassing for you is the fact that you mouthed off about someone making a mistake when they didn't, and it ended up being you instead.

Mark Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 06:20 PM EST

Amy who?

H Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 06:08 PM EST

I really don't think SNL will make it with the current staff, now that Amy has left so has all the funny. That Kristen Wiig is so NOT funny; all her characters are annoying and so is she.

tfp Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 05:53 PM EST

He DID mention the Blogojevich cold open and described it as tepid. YOU need to do YOUR research...or at least read before criticizing.

Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 05:38 PM EST

Adam, they did do a skit about the Illinois Governor, in the very beginning.

Do your research before you put out there that SNL sucks-bit and be accurate.

ALAN Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 05:36 PM EST

I've loved Amy Poehler since the days she was on Conan O-brien playing the dorky girl in the audience.

Ryan Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 05:05 PM EST

SNL is not gonna be the same without her. When is that Office spin-off with her supposed to air? February?

Patty Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 04:59 PM EST

I was laughing so hard at the end of WU last night. The wandering governor cracked me up. (Is that wrong?)

piggysag Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 04:49 PM EST

I always like her.

I hoped to see her on tv really soon.

Bettie Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 04:00 PM EST

Kanye West was "flu-y"? Was THAT what the problem was??? He can't sing, people! Of course he put out the "I've got the flu" canard, but the camera and sound on SNL don't lie, he really has no talent. This is the first time I had ever seen him close up. I'd love to see him perform without the backup singer to hit the high note for him, the cool graphics, and the backup band to try to cover up his voice. To give him credit, the "show" was wonderful, but he can't even speak properly.

Kevin! Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 03:54 PM EST

RIIIIIIIIIIICK RICKRICKRICKRIICKKKKKKK

I'll miss you Amy :(

David Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 03:44 PM EST

The "I can't believe my girlfriend is a Porn Star skit when Seann William Scott hosted is by far my favorite.

Amy Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 03:42 PM EST

SNL lost my viewing forever after this last election. They are one-side liberals.

Andrew Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 03:35 PM EST

We will miss you Amy! Good luck in the future!

Horatio Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 03:24 PM EST

Good riddance to Poehler! The woman has not met a scene she did not chew into submission. Of course that is par for the course with this batch of SNL cast members (and has been for several years). Too bad Hugh Laurie's talents were wasted on the program.

Hannah Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 03:16 PM EST

The Couple who should be Divorced!

Seth and Amy together are comedic gold.

Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 03:00 PM EST

My favorite character of Amy's wasn't an SNL character, but was the character she did on mean girls. The white trash mom who was trying to be cool, I thought that was the funniest thing in the film. I usually don't watch SNL so I can't comment on that.

Tracy in L.A. Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 02:44 PM EST

Everything Amy does is hilarious, honestly. I agree with the other poster, I looked forward to Tina & Amy every Saturday. I'm so sad they are gone! And I loved the "Uncle Rick" skits, too. =P

Ted Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 02:44 PM EST

That "Really" sketch was among the funniest of last night's show?! Really?! I left SNL for Mad-TV about ten years ago, and haven't looked back. SNL has always been so scattershot with their hit-and-miss shows. Mad-TV's much more consistently funny, and it will be missed after this season. I never understood why many people are so protective and defensive people about SNL. No matter how unfunny it is, they still support it and most have nasty things to say about Mad-TV. Yet Mad has some of SNL's former writers, and if you took the same sketches and put them on SNL, these same complainers would be calling them 'brilliant.'

Jana Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 02:42 PM EST

I'm really going to miss Amy on SNL! I love when she played Kaitlin and Amber! Classic! I really look forward to watching anything she's in! I MISS YOU ALREADY AMY!

Hello Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 02:37 PM EST

SNL & Poler are terrible, meaning not funny, its been several yrs. since SNL was worth watching, its totally irrelevant now.

Erbear Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 02:35 PM EST

Best ones were "The Couple Who Should Be Divorced" and the great couple of years that it was her and Tina fey on Weekend Update...

pugpugmom Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 02:33 PM EST

I too, liked the little girl yelling Rick! However, her Hilary Clinton was pretty good too. She will be hard if not difficult to replace. I think her talent goes beyond comedy. I think she can handle drama or any projects that come her way.

michael Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 02:22 PM EST

I loved her Nancy Grace.
It was was on the funniest things she ever did!

Molly Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 02:12 PM EST

I used to love the skit where she played the hyperactive little girl who would run in circles around Horatio Sanz yelling, "Rick! Rick!" Her retainer lisp was classic.

Jon Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 02:05 PM EST

"The first time I saw you I thought you were walking away" now thats funny.

Patel Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 01:59 PM EST

People are always talking about how SNL was funnier back in the day, and that may be true, but i think Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are the funniest cast members ever. I can't wait to watch what Amy does next because we know it will funny and charming and you'll want to give her a hug for being so adorable

Charlie Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 01:56 PM EST

my favorite is when she played that girl with coke bottle glasses who was always annoying her step-dad Rick (horatio sanz)
