'Rome: The Movie'? All hail!

Dec 1, 2008, 12:21 PM | by Simon Vozick-Levinson

Categories: British things, Deals, Film, Happy Holidays, Television, Things That Are Awesome!

Kevinmckiddrome_l Was TV writer/producer Bruno Heller listening in on my family's Thanksgiving road trip or something? Just four days ago, the assembled Vozick-Levinsons were drivin' down the highway, lamentin' last year's early demise of HBO's Rome. Sure, we understood that it must have been prohibitively expensive to keep constructing those awesomely realistic sets. But come on. Just two short seasons, with so much more ancient history left to explore? Couldn't they make a movie or something?

Turns out they can!  Heller, who co-created Rome, just confirmed the rumors that he's been thinking about continuing the series on the big screen. Even better (SPOILER ALERT!), he's hinting that Kevin McKidd's character might not be quite as deceased as he seemed at the end of season 2 — which is great news for anyone who thinks McKidd is destined for bigger places than the sidelines of Seattle Grace. Anyway, nothing's for sure yet: "It's not there until it is there," Heller cautions in that Hollywood Reporter story. "I would love to round that show off." He can consider this official notice that I (and my parents and sister) would totally love for him to round that show off, too. Anyone else ready to follow Rome to the multiplex?

More on Rome and its alums:
Kevin McKidd made the Must List for his Grey's role
EW gave Season 2 of Rome an A review on DVD
EW gave Heller's new show, The Mentalist, a solid B review
Back in August '07, PopWatch mourned the loss of Rome
PopWatch wondered why no one was watching McKidd in Journeyman, right before it got canceled :(

Stef Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 08:49 PM EST

Amazon had Rome seasons 1 & 2 in their Gold Box and I totally got it. I'm so excited. I would be first in line at the movie!

Rachel K Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 02:51 PM EST

I would totally be there opening weekend!

Miss Sassy Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 10:03 AM EST

MORE ROME! MORE ROME! BRING IT ON!!!!

Kelly Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 05:15 AM EST

Please let this actually happen, couldn’t bear another disappointment after the mooted Deadwood movie went belly-up. I NEED Pullo and Vorenus back.

Smile! Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 04:55 AM EST

ALL HAIL LUCIUS VORENUS!!! (I LOOOOOOVE HIM TO DEATH!)

Nix Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 12:12 AM EST

Not that it ever paid all that much attention to history to begin with, but the series (forcibly) ended with the demise of the Republic and the creation of the Empire. Octavian became Augustus. That's the climax of that entire soap opera of history that people have been writing about since it happened two thousand years ago. The next interesting thing would be ... uh ... the turmoil of the Claudian emperors leading up to Vesuvius. I know Vorenus and Pullo have this gods-given ability to not age over two decades of history, but over a century?

Now, if the movie were to tell the story of the breakdown of the Triumvirate and Octavian's war on Antony and Cleopatra properly, with a proper battle of Actium ...

Sheldon Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 09:41 PM EST

Rome must come back, HBO's best show. Sex and war and sex and politics. It does not get any better than that.

Ali Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 09:34 PM EST

holy! that would be amazing! 13!

Crystal Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 09:16 PM EST

Thirteen!! Oh, let this happen, that would be awesome. I'm forcing myself to watch Grey's for Kevin, so I would be very happy to see Lucius again!

Heather Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 06:56 PM EST

Yes PLEASE

Susan Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 06:03 PM EST

I'm in. Big time.

J. Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 04:59 PM EST

I'd definitely go see a movie continuing that saga. It was killed way too soon.

C C Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 04:30 PM EST

Movie? How about a Rome miniseries? 4 to 6 hours maybe? HBO could afford it.

zack Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 04:30 PM EST

Fantastic series! I would be first in line to see the movie. Great acting and cast of characters. I hope it does happen.

Amanda Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 03:52 PM EST

Loved the show! Movie will be awsome!

Redeye Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 03:51 PM EST

One of the greatest TV series ever made!! I loved it, I miss it, and I will be there for the movie!!!!!!!!!

pop Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 03:21 PM EST

heck yeah! love this show, but they said that there was going to be a deadwood movie too. so i'm not gonna hold my breath

Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 03:09 PM EST

I'll believe it when I see it... much like the much talked about Arrested Development movie... but if true, I am SO there!

Hutchy Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 02:54 PM EST

The plain truth is this: the "THIRTEEN!!" scene (and you all know what I'm talking about if you are reading this article) is, plain and simple, in my top 3 favorite scenes of all time, on any show. I just remember my wife and I watching the scene and being absolutely positive, POSITIVE, the Pullo was going to die, and and my wife (a crafty, artsy chick flick type) literally yelling at the screen "GET IN THERE, VORENUS!!" LOL Truly classic!!

Lisa Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 02:50 PM EST

Yippeeeee!!!!

Laura M. Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 02:39 PM EST

I am so excited about this news! Rome was such a fantastic show! I would absolutely pay money to see Vorenus and Pullo together again! Please make this happen!

izikavazo Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 02:29 PM EST

This is shocking and exciting news. I think they should keep Lucious dead though. As much as I like him, his death was very final and moderately satisfying.

Beth Powell Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 02:20 PM EST

I am being greedy! I want a Rome movie and a Deadwood movie. Maybe a flashback with Ceasar, Mark Antony and Pullo and Verenus!

Warda Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 02:16 PM EST

Please please please! I'll even overlook whatever ridiculous plot device is necessary to bring Vorenus back from the dead just to get him and Pullo back together again. Hope it's more than a rumor.

BC Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 02:07 PM EST

Rome was by far one of the best series HBO has ever produced. I would definitely be down to pay cash to see Pullo/Vorenus one more time!

Rahul Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 02:05 PM EST

I'm absolutely interested.

Emily Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 02:01 PM EST

I'm so there! Why, just this weekend I was watching season one again. I think Rome deserves an epic movie. But they'd better not blow it out of proportion. It works so well as an intimate study of character, tradition, and history. Bring Rome to the big screen!

Amy Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 01:57 PM EST

Can they bring Antony back to life too?? Cause I love me some James Purefoy!

Benjh Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 01:47 PM EST

I had an orgasm just reading this article. Of course it would be great. It would be amazing. It would be pleasurable.

Nicole Cassandra Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 01:46 PM EST

I won't get my hopes up but yeay! I love Rome. Vorenus and Pullo, one of the best bro-mances ever!

Sarah C Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 01:43 PM EST

All wknd long, whenever I saw a commercial for the Punisher: SequelWhatever, I said out loud, "Titus Pullo, you can do better!" And McKidd on Grey's only led to a Rome marathon at my house. So yes, I'll be there on premiere day, toga and chariots blazing.

Kathryn Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 01:41 PM EST

It would be a Christmas Miracle!

Mr. Fanboy Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 01:38 PM EST

Rome was an amazing series. I was totally devastated when HBO cancelled it. Not to mention Deadwood. I sure hope this doesn't turn into the Deadwood movies... where we hear about the plans and then nothing more. ever.

That said, I'm not sure a Rome movie would be such a huge draw. It deserves to be back on TV. It was to bad the second season was rushed like that to tie up the Antony & Cloepatra & Octavian history. They did a wonderful job considering the horrendous circumstances ( including less episodes than the first season). Just not sure where they would go from here t hat would be a compelling movie event for the general public.

Jim Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 01:37 PM EST

Nice try EW, but I saw the front page teasing a Popwatch remark about tonight's new How I Met Your Mother featuring Lily's 50 Reasons to Have Sex. The link didn't work, and the home page is now scrubbed, so somebody must have figured out that the episode was last week. I wish I screen-capped it. Oh well.

Rhomi Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 01:28 PM EST

Love this show. Anytime, anyplace, any venue, I'm there. Long Live Rome! (and Kevin McKidd)

irene Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 01:25 PM EST

If this story is true then I will be there opening day!

Michelle Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 01:15 PM EST

This is for real, right? I'm not having a fever dream or something? Thank god. I've sorely missed this show. I'll watch wherever and whenever. Having Vorenus back would just be gravy. Hail Caesar!

HellsBells Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 01:15 PM EST

O happy day! This would be absolutely EPIC! Don't let us down... this must happen. I second the motion that Kevin is just too dynamic to lanquish away in lesser roles. His is a presence made for the big screen.

Jenn Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 01:11 PM EST

But what about James Purefoy? I'd miss him in the Rome movie.

orville Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 01:08 PM EST

Yes!! I am so there. I'd even settle for an HBO tv movie now and again. They left it at a time when it *really* starts to get interesting and debauched.

Jelana Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 01:07 PM EST

Yes, please! More Rome, more Kevin McKidd, more all of it!

Can we get a Carnivale movie, too? Am I just being greedy.

Adan Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 01:04 PM EST

Oh please Oh please Oh please! Love this show and was so upset when it was gone. The cast, the sets, everything was so good. Would definitely see it at least once. And if you don't own the dvds - get them! Especially today at Amazon on their gold box deal -44.99 for both seasons! Joyous Festivus!

whiterose Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 12:51 PM EST

Oh yes, do it, do it. After finally finishing The First Men in Rome book series, it was interesting to watch someone else's take on the Rome story. It was one of the most entertaining and literate TV series ever.

wagons Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 12:49 PM EST

Absolutely!! Midnight show on opening day!

Mo Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 12:46 PM EST

I don't have HBO, but my husband and I watched the series on DVD. Count us in. Pullo and Vorenus (those two Forrest Gumpi) have to be two of the best characters in recent TV history.

Alex Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 12:46 PM EST

Are you kidding me? I'd turn up at the multiplex in full Roman regalia, long curly locks, gladiator sandals - and a frock that barely covers by bosom!
Pullo and Vorenus 4eva.

Ellie Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 12:38 PM EST

Yes please! Give me more Lucius Vorenus!

Jenna Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 12:37 PM EST

DUDE! I am so there as will be my entire family. Long Live Vorenus! Long Live Pullo!

Cecilia Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 12:35 PM EST

OMFG awesome! I would kill to get Lucius Vorenus back =D
