'My Own Worst Enemy' and 'Dirty Sexy Money': What to do?

Dec 15, 2008, 05:47 PM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: 'Dirty Sexy Money', Television

Enemysexymoney_l Ever since word NBC and ABC announced their respective decisions to cancel My Own Worst Enemy and Dirty Sexy Money, episodes of the two doomed dramas have been piling up on my DVR like the stacks of magazines and newspapers, paid bills, and personal correspondence that have turned the main storage area of my apartment into something my husband has lovingly dubbed "the shame-shame closet." And in much the same way I find it hard to recycle old birthday cards or five-year-old copies of Martha Stewart Living, I'm having a tough time trying to decide whether to erase these series from my DVR queue and revoke their "series recording" status, or make like a member of the dance band on the Titanic and keep playing till the final credits roll. Any Enemy or Sexy Money fans out there who are grappling with/have grappled with this painful pop-culture decision? (Yeah, the writing on the latter series went off the rails this season, but I can't help but feel disloyal having this conversation.) And whether or not I hit delete now, how am I supposed to go on without my weekly Mädchen Amick and Natalie Zea fixes in 2009?

I think for a blogger, you're definitely a fukking idiot not to know that you can get those episodes my own worst enemy for free online at any torrent site if you wish, in high definition or standard definition. Deleting this off of your DVR shouldn't be a big deal, and certainly not a big enough deal to write one of these stupid miniarticles that EW writes now, ALL the time.

ABC DON'T CANCEL DSM....WE LOVE IT.

Fri, Dec 19, 2008 at 03:06 PM EST

.

Vikki Sixx Thu, Dec 18, 2008 at 04:24 PM EST

I just went through the same problem. I watched and enjoyed both shows and hearing that both were cancelled hit like a ton of bricks. I opted to stop recording My Own Worst Enemy and keep recording Dirty Sexy Money for a sinple reason. As much as I was enjoying Enemy, I hadn't been given enough time to care that much about the final outcome. However, with Money, I did get one full season (albeit a short one due to the strike) and this season so I do care what the final outcome is. Especially since it's been said they are actually going to give closure to the show!

Shara Thu, Dec 18, 2008 at 04:57 AM EST

(Mary--several posts below) I gave my opinion/voted both places. Thanks for the info. Keeping my fingers crossed!
:)

David Wed, Dec 17, 2008 at 02:02 AM EST

DSM is Such a Great show. You should absolutely watch it. The women are gorgeous and it's a great fun with all of the twists. I'm despondent that DSM, Eli Stone and Pushing Daisies were all cancelled. It was the Death of Quality TV.

Get ready for waves of more cheap "reality" garbage, everyone.

clhmedia Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 11:52 PM EST

I'll bet $100 it was Raymond, he diced Tony so he cant be turned back into Tom.

Jerry Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 06:51 PM EST

MOWE was such a good show. One of the best on TV... To bad NBC is retarted.

Paul Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 03:08 PM EST

watch DSM, its been great these past few weeks. its the ultimate guilty pleasure. if ABC was smart they would air it after Housewives on sunday and give it a chance!

Arob311 Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 01:26 PM EST

I am heartbroken over the cancellation of DSM and demand a valid reason! This is one of the best shows on television and will probably get replaced with "Who Wants to Marry My Dog" or some other reality dreck. We are really heading down the route where the only shows available to watch are "reality" ones, where producers pick the most obnoxious people and rig their words and actions.

Bring back the Darlings!

Lauren Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 01:24 PM EST

I feel the same way about Pushing Daisies. Maybe I'll just stop now and come back for the final episode.

Stephanie T. Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 01:00 PM EST

MOWE was campy, fun, and Christain Slater is freaking awesome. Unfortunately people love thier CSI Miami. I prefer Joel McHale's take on it. lol.

Martin Haro Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 12:32 PM EST

Michael,
WATCH DSM ASAP, if anything for Natalie Zea-Zoe M. bitchfight. It's got quotables!

Gretchen Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 12:15 PM EST

DSM is starting to get good and they cancel it!! Ugh, I hate ABC for doing this and letting Grey's continue w/ this Izzie ridiculousness.

Rye Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 12:05 PM EST

Totally agree Slezak!
I LOVED Lipstick Jungle, but now that it "may" be cancelled, my DVR episodes are piling up (3 weeks!) and for some reason, I just can't find the motivation to watch them.

Jen Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 12:00 PM EST

We still watch Dirty Sexy Money. I don't care if it is cancelled. I am riding this coaster to the bitter end. Life isn't just about the ups, there are downs too.

chop Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 11:40 AM EST

DSM totally earned the good will the first season built up for it. I know this past one started a bit rocky, but it has been appointment viewing for the past few. I'll miss Peter Krause and the gang.

Luisa Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 11:31 AM EST

For most shows (though I don't watch these two), I wouldn't stop watching just cause it's cancelled. That's basically saying, Okay, you win! We'll watch whatever crap you put on instead!

Say, with Pushing Daisies. Apparently a couple million people have just given up though it has a few new episodes left. What the hell, people??? Show your support when the show most needs it!!!

NOLA Kel Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 11:27 AM EST

I have a similar dilemma. As a New Orleans resident, I have unwatched episodes of K-ville still on my dvr. Just don't have the heart to delete, but don't have the stomach to watch.

Paul Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 11:03 AM EST

I deleted Dirty Sexy Money from my DVR. I am still watching weekly Pushing Daisies. I have Eli Stone piling up on my Tivo, but I want to watch them and get caught up on them during rerun season.

BklynGirl Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 10:57 AM EST

I had the first 4 episodes of MOWE waiting for me on DVR and was stresed about finding time to watch them all. As soon as the cancellation was announced, I deleted them. I currently have 3 or 4 episodes of Fringe on my DVR. Do I hope for a cancellation, or just force myself to watch them before the new episodes come back in 2009?

Yogi Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 10:51 AM EST

DSM is good escapist television. I hate to see it go as well. I need my weekly Blair Underwood fix!

Jerry Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 10:44 AM EST

I droppedENEMY as soon as cancelation was announced. But I kept up with DIRTY SEXY because I LOVE IT! ABC needs to give it another chance! It's gotten SO good especially that gun-fire-shot at the end of last weeks episode! SAVE DSM!

Jennifer Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 10:40 AM EST

I too kept recording MOWE, mainly because of Taylor Lautner & Mike O'Malley, but soon came to terms with the fact keeping them was a total waste of space, because watching it would be a waste of time. DSM on the other hand is worth keeping around, only because as the show comes to an end, it has gotten more and more ridiculous while equally entertaining. When you do get around to watching it you'll be glad you kept it.

Lauren Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 10:35 AM EST

ABC has pretty much ruined my Wednesday nights by canceling Pushing Daisies & DSM. I still have them on my recorder & I still watch them. I keep hoping maybe a cable channel will pick them up though. I could see Pushing Daises running on USA or even the SciFi Channel. Maybe DSM on Bravo or Lifetime? Fingers crossed!
ABC you are a tease! You give us original, clever programming & then pull it away but Grey's Anatomy is still on the air WAY past its prime. NOT FAIR!

Natalie Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 10:30 AM EST

I recorded three episodes of MOWE and yet I couldn't make it through the pilot.. so the delete button was utilized fairly quickly. I'm pretty into DSM and its going to be sad to see it go... I say watch it... everyone loves a little nouveau Dynasty

Angela Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 10:12 AM EST

I have been watching MOWE and boy are the episodes getting good. It's really too bad that it got axed. My DVR is still clugged with Moonlight episodes refuse to delete until DVD comes out. DSM is piling up and so it Eli Stone. I might delete Eli Stone because well it's not holding my interest this year. DSM I want to know who killed Dutch so I'll finish watching.

Ernest Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 10:09 AM EST

I'm gonna continue to DVR until the last episode. If they finish, I'll watch. If they leave me hanging, erased they will be.

Fish Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 10:04 AM EST

Never started watching these shows, so they are not cluttering up my DVR (however, I do still have episodes from the "John Adams" miniseries I need to get to). I mainly wanted to respond to something an earlier poster said about the end of "Heroes" always getting cut off when DVRed. Why would the network do this? Are they trying to piss off the few remaining fans? They should go out of their way to give us a good viewing experience. No wonder NBC's ratings are in the basement.

Rob Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 09:57 AM EST

Well, the producers of DSM promised to answer who killed Dutch in the final episode, so there will at least be some closure, so I'm sticking around. I love that show.

rande Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 09:55 AM EST

In my opinion ABC should stand for A Bad Choice. If you find yourself watching an ABC show, ask yourself this-Cancel 2 REALLY good shows just to turn around and pick up another staions SLoppy Dirty Second? Pushing Stupidity is more like it. Are the Suits at Mickey's House Eli Stoned when they come up with programming idea? ABC launched an entire night's programming, only after not returning any of those shows after the writer's strike and then they wonder why the ratings tank. ANNIE ARE YOU OK? ARE YOU OK ANNIE? With no Bona Fide HITS(WORD loosley) to anchor a single one of the returning shows ABC has cemented my belief that Stupi is As Stupid Does...and Stupid Does work at ABC. Lost 2yrs Housewives 4yrs...other than that ABC is DEAD TO ME! YOu know...like NBC is to evryone else.

Rich Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 09:49 AM EST

What a silly question. You either enjoy the shows enough to watch them, or you don't. Whether they continue beyond this year should be irrelevant (although I agree with the comment about becoming further invested in a storyline that will never end).
It's kind of like saying, "I had Olivier's Hamlet on my DVR for ages, but when I found out he never made a sequel, I deleted it."

Auriana Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 09:29 AM EST

I'm still clinging to The Middleman episodes I have on my dvr. They take up so much space but considering the show most likely will not be renewed, I can't bring myself to delete them.

Ceesha Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 09:26 AM EST

I still watch MOWE and DSM (as well as PD). My husband thinks I'm crazy - he said it's like reading 13 chapters of a book only to find the rest of the pages have been ripped out. I still have hope that MOWE and DSM will somehow be given a last minute reprieve, but if not, at least I can know that I did everything possible to keep these shows alive (although they will all be greatly missed). And I'm happy to hear that PD has been rewritten to give us the closure we need should it not return.

Tony Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 09:09 AM EST

When I come to this type of situation I base my decision to delete on if or if not there is a conclusion to the story. In this case i've been told that you will get resolution on DSM's last episode since they knew when filming it, that it would be the last show. I have not heard either way about MOWE but last night was the last show so you tell me if there was a conclusion that makes it worth it to me to watch.

MadmanTX Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 09:05 AM EST

I am still watching canceled shows like "My Own Worst Enemy" and "Pushing Daisies", not because I am obligated to, but because I enjoy them and am privately hoping they get picked up by other networks.

Lucy Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 08:57 AM EST

MOWE is a very clever show. too bad it didn't get the timeslot it deserved especially since I can't stand David Caruso on CSI Miami.

Angie Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 08:51 AM EST

That's pretty funny that you decided to write about this...I was just noticing that "My Own Worst Enemy" and "Pushing Daisies" was piling up on my DVR, and I have no idea what I want to do. I loved "Pushing Daisies", but I'm afraid if I watch the remaining episodes, I'll just be that much sadder when it ends! As for "My Own Worst Enemy", I unfortunately keep those around to watch the ending of "Heroes" which always gets cut off when DVRd!!!!!!

jen Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 08:26 AM EST

I deleted My Own Worst Enemy when I heard it was cancelled. I had never watched any episodes, was just recording them to watch eventually, so when it I heard it was cancelled, I just deleted without ever seeing any, why get invested in a show that will never be complete. Now Pushing Daisies is a different story, I watch every episode and savor it as if it were my last meal. I pray they release them on dvd very very soon.

Shannon Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 07:44 AM EST

delete delete delete.

I have too many shows on my DVR to waste it with ones who aren't coming back.

Every season I DVR the new shows and wait to see what the buzz is and if they get picked up. I delete whichever ones are limping or canceled. I got too invested in shows only to be canceled after 5 episodes to be burned again.

BA Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 07:43 AM EST

ERASE

Cynthia Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 07:30 AM EST

Keep watching. I'm still watching MOWE and Eli Stone even though they are supposed to be cancelled. Why?? Because not long ago I stopped watching Jericho because it was supposed to be cancelled and it ended up coming back for one more season. I ended up missing a critical episode where Jake's father was killed! So - keep watching until over really means over.

Delon Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 07:23 AM EST

I've no such problem because i continue to watch DSM regularly. I loved the show last season and i think it fell victim to the writers' strike(also Pushing Daisies). I wanna see how the series concludes. I'm pretty sure Papa Darling killed Papa George, but i still wanna see how it's revealed.

Jo Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 05:51 AM EST

MOWE was stacking on my tivo without an episode watched when I heard it was going to be cancelled so that was an easy delete. I quit DSM after loving the first season early this season. But I'm watching Eli Stone and Pushing Daisies to the very end in defiance!

bruno Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 04:04 AM EST

you erase mikey. you erase...it's over.

mary Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 02:08 AM EST

Slezak, I love reading everything you write! Watch DSM...you won't be disappointed! My hubby NEVER likes ANY of my shows, but really enjoys DSM...even reminding ME when it is time to watch it! So get your Zea fix while you can...I think that is what Hubby is doing! :-)

Mary Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 01:30 AM EST

Please help save My Own Worst Enemy!!! Even if for only a few more episodes I NEED to know who killed Tony

http://tvseriesfinale.com/articles/my-own-worst-enemy-petition-nbc-to-keep-the-christian-slater-tv-show-on-the-air/

Or you can just vote for it at the People's Choice Awards

Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 01:17 AM EST

Last week's episode of DSM may have been the best since the pilot. Glenn Fitzgerald's contempt-filled bargaining with God for his cancer-stricken wife was outstanding. "If you want me back, you better start showing me something" was a great line. Taking him out of the clergy might have been the worst decision they made on this show.

T Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 01:13 AM EST

What happened to the days when viewers would fight for shows to remain on air? I may be mistaken about the shows, but I believe that Cagney & Lacey, WKRP in Cincinnati, Star Trek, Designing Women and The Nanny were all saved by write-ins. I know there are more, but I am tired. But you guys get my point. And all those shows were in the days before the internet. Use of mass email, websites and social networking site pages should make it that much easier for our voices to be heard, so why we are not doing it? When it comes to shows that tons of people enjoy, why not at least try to fight the networks by showing them that they should give new shows a chance to develop and that there are very interested viewers out there who are willing to support those efforts! I realize the difference may be the nature of internet campaigns vs. written letters because ultimately networks have to convince advertisers to buy airtime for their shows. Is it time to go back to "old school" letters? Ideas?

Ellipsian Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 01:08 AM EST

As long as you're pushing those "Daisies" 'til the end, Slezak, you're doing the right thing.

Sally Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 11:47 PM EST

What I do when a show has been cancelled , but I still have a few weeks on my tivo? I delete the episodes without viewing. I see no reason to watch the episodes and wonder "what would have been"?

DSM fan Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 11:47 PM EST

Dirty Sexy Money is such a great show and I'm really disappointed that ABC decided to cancel it. I became invested in the characters from the first episode. It's a witty, funny, and sexy show with a talented cast and great writing. I'm really going to miss watching this show and am hoping that some other network picks it up.

alia Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 11:44 PM EST

I like Dirty Sexy money..but I really think Peter Krause is a WAY too Great of an actor to be on a Fluffy show like DSM- I really hope he goes back to do a series for either HBO or Showtime- that's where he belongs!

Jenny Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 11:40 PM EST

Say it ain't so DSM. I love this show. It is so fun. I will continue to watch it and hope ABC learns its lesson.
