'Twilight' sequel's new director: Should a man direct 'New Moon'?

Dec 9, 2008, 03:20 PM | by Amy Wilkinson

Categories: Film, Twilight

Twilightforbo_l Twilight's major box office bite helped Catherine Hardwicke set the record for the highest-grossing opening weekend for a female-directed film ever. But now the woman behind the blockbuster has announced she will not be directing the sequel due to timing conflicts, which presents Summit with a weighty decision: Tap another woman to helm New Moon, or see if a man can do just as well.

Some argue that a female sensibility is vital to capturing the lovesick heroine of Stephenie Meyer's vampire romance. While I agree that no one understands angsty teenage girls quite like someone who once was an angsty teenage girl, that in no way negates a man's ability to bring this story to life. Remember that while the novel is told from Bella's perspective, the big screen incarnation doesn't live solely in its heroine's mind. Each character (both male and female) must become a fully-formed entity in and of themselves -- something any good director (male or female) should be able to do. Many of our greatest romances have been largely male produced. One of my personal faves (don't judge) is The Notebook -- a novel written by a guy (Nicholas Sparks), adapted for the screen by a guy (Jan Sardi), and directed by a guy (Nick Cassavetes).  This man-made movie left me sobbing buckets, something Twilight certainly didn't do.

Ultimately, the idea of a female director is appealing, especially since there aren't that many out there. But a woman shouldn't be selected simply for the sake of having a woman. The best director should be chosen, regardless of sex. But that's just what I think. What say you Twilight fans? Vote in our poll below and let us know if you care whether a man or woman directs the sequel and how you think the series might change if a man takes over the wheel.

if anyone thinks the director of 'american pie' and 'about a boy' (two totally _GUY_ movies) can make teenage girls swoooon in 'new moon' you have got to be KIDDING.

CATeach Tue, Jun 16, 2009 at 07:56 PM EST

The trailer looks great! I love the effects! I can't imagine there not being any dedication to the development of the characters... looks like they are in good form to me! I hope they consider the songs like "cry" and "Save you" by Kelly Clarkson would go fiting with this movie...Can't wait to see what is chosen.

Tiff Tue, Apr 28, 2009 at 04:30 PM EST

Well .. im a true die hard Twilight fan and i just hope that this new director knows what hes gotten himself into this thing has become so BIG worldwide that if he fucks it up smh... catherine did OK i like the movie LOVED THE BOOKS.. and robert and kristen in my opinion did a great job

leo Sun, Apr 26, 2009 at 09:50 PM EST

Ah...but You are wrong. This new director is known for his shoking movies,Hes never even done a romance!I think think they are making a big mistake.

xfileman2000 Sun, Apr 19, 2009 at 06:29 PM EST

Are you kidding me? This question is actually asking if a man knows how to direct a compelling and memorable romance.

Twilight was NOT directed well by Catherine. The success of the movie was catapulted by the popularity of the books, not the director. She hurt the movie.

As far as a man's capability to direct a romance, most memorable movies were directed by men. Titanic. Gone With The Wind. Troy. It Happened One Night.

I rest my case.

taylor Sat, Apr 11, 2009 at 04:13 PM EST

i dont think a male director can really capture the amazing romance and devestating heartbreak that takes place between edward and bella. we will just have to see if this movie is as powerful as the novel like the first

char Thu, Apr 2, 2009 at 10:10 AM EST

i don't think it matters if it is done by a male or female but it has to be kept true to the book if it is going to work. i think twilight was a very good film but i feel in places edward and bella's relationship was not as intense as it is in the book. as long as they keep to the book it should be really good

brianna Mon, Mar 23, 2009 at 02:56 PM EST

who is the new director i really want to know i kinda have a question about the third movie

Great song for New Moon Movie.

P.S.: "let us know if you care whether a man or woman directs the sequel and how you think the series might change if a man takes over the wheel." Read people ffs.

Vrey Sat, Feb 21, 2009 at 05:52 AM EST

I really don't know. . . The movie itself wasn't near as good as the book, but every time I would talk about the book or movie with a group of friends a damn man would come and ruin the moment with their "That movie was so stupid" bullshit. If a dude DOES film this, he needs to have the understanding that women would have, and understand the feelings it gives us. Because face it, this book is mostly for the girls. It's somethin' that keeps teen spirits high.

... Sat, Feb 14, 2009 at 02:21 PM EST

I dont get why anyone was so disapoited with twilight the movie I think all the cutting and revising made it better! putting the "I know what you are" bit in the forest was awesome and the car crash was sooo much simpler. loved the book, loooved the movie, hope new moons just as good!

Alexis Tue, Feb 10, 2009 at 02:41 AM EST

I honestly think that a guy film director should try his hand at new moon, tho i guess i would be fine either way- so long as the director tries much harder than the 1st director to stick to the REAL storyline; none of that cookie-cutter luvy-duvy hollywood junk. It made me upset that so many important scenes were missing, and the ones that were included were warped in the director's rush to fit as much of the story into a 2 hr time slot. And the scene w/the meadow? So many different parts of the book all crammed in2 one scene is just too confusing, and kindof kills the mood 4 those who actually have READ.

Jill Mon, Feb 9, 2009 at 06:04 PM EST

Katy Perry song "thinking of you" would be perfect for New Moon.... someone should tell someone who has a contact to the director :)

Larissa Thu, Feb 5, 2009 at 03:45 PM EST

Well twilight was such a good film maybe the person who made that one should make new moon EDWARD IS THE BEST!!!!!!!!!

Marie Sun, Feb 1, 2009 at 05:22 PM EST

I think as long as the characters are the same then it will be fine it ruins a film when they change to different actors/actresses for the next film

Mrs. Lautner Sat, Jan 31, 2009 at 12:22 AM EST

I really think a man shouldnt direct this type of film. For one the sad scenes like when Edward leaves Bella that is a girl moment and when Bella feels the hole in her chest thats a crying moment. Well they can have a man direct it but he should have emotions.

Mariah Mon, Jan 19, 2009 at 05:34 PM EST

(continued from below...) CH rushed Twilight and didn’t let the fans feel the emotions Stephenie created in each of us. New Moon is a book of intense emotions for Bella and the readers and the new director better be prepared to take on this challenge. But from the look of the comments on here, the bar isn’t raised all that high.

Mariah Mon, Jan 19, 2009 at 05:33 PM EST

(continued from below...)It looked nothing like Stephenie described… nor did Edward in the sun fit the description either. And did anyone else notice the STUPID SPARKLE SOUNDS!?!? I want to see Edward sparkle for real in Italy; I want to be blinded by the light reflecting off his skin like thousands of diamonds in the sun, the way he was intended to look. I want to feel my heart break when he leaves Bella in the woods (I’m begging…. Please don’t mess with that part of the story, it’s not broken, so don’t try to fix it!), I want to see the months of depression and feel that there is no hope for Bella and Edward (ever thought I know the ending), I want to feel betrayed when Jacob leaves and I really want to feel the terror in Italy and the delicate balance Bella is walking to keep herself from ripping in two. I don’t want any dramatic angle shots like Twilight and I don’t want to see them playing in the trees ever again…. That was really dumb; Edward is too classy to be in trees.

Mariah Mon, Jan 19, 2009 at 05:32 PM EST

I feel that CH did a very poor job on Twilight and I am extremely excited to see how a man will take Stephenie's vision and book and turn it (hopefully) into a better film than Twilight. The real problem with Twilight was the loss of emotion and connection to the characters, what they were going through and the actual plot itself. My biggest problem with that film was the adaptations from the book that would have made the film phenomenal had they been left alone. Bella and Edward should never have gotten together so quickly, the lullaby should have been explained, Jacob should have told Bella the truth about the Cullens and she never should have entered the bookstore in the first place…it says so in the book, and I don’t recall her using Google either! Important scenes from the book were cut so stupid ones like “the science field trip” could take their place. Other scenes were so messed up they were funny… i.e. the meadow. What in the world was CH thinking? (continued...)

Alex fan Sat, Jan 17, 2009 at 09:02 PM EST

(contine of last post) at this point I don't blame anyone but the director tells them how to do things the screenplayer writes lines and pauses and when to pick up things. And male or femal could direct it. the screenplayer hasn't changed so it might be simiary to the praformance in twilight. Right now I don't care twilight was great and new moon will be too :)

Alex fan Sat, Jan 17, 2009 at 08:57 PM EST

the real problem is the screenwriter the director just tells them where to stand and how to say the lines. If you have someone to blame for twilight or how it is written then blame her. I

Kaseu Sat, Jan 17, 2009 at 05:15 PM EST

Here is my opinion on this whole subject: We can all say we loved the movie Twilight, simple as that. it was a good movie! but i think we can also say it wasnt nearly as descriptive as it should have been. Twilight left out a few of the mayjor scenes that should have been in there, such as the whole bedroom scene where bella finally finds out the edward is watching her sleep had to be the hottest kissing scene i think i have ever seen! but it was not how it should have been portrayed. they were supposed to wake up together and saying they loved each other..the people that read the books could piece together the missing parts, but i feel that the people that just went to see it w/o reading them might have gotten confused. because they jumped from being SOO awkward together to being MADLY in love with eachother too quickly, i feel. I think that the director and everyone involved should take the extra time and/or money to build the characters and the story line better than twilight..

christine loveridge Fri, Jan 16, 2009 at 03:43 PM EST

I'm excited to see what Chris can bring to the plate. A lot of people I talk to don't like the 2nd book but I believe the movie can totally change that. I would love for it to stay true to the book, but on the other had I would like to see the Cullens as a more formed character, from their perspectives. Perhaps the movie should include where they go and what they are thinking after they leave Forks. I sure wouldn't mind seeing more of the beautiful vampires...

Alex fan Fri, Jan 16, 2009 at 03:31 PM EST

right now I don't care if it's a guy or girl as long as it rocks. Ok it might make it better if there was a guy and a girl directing so that it would have the girl love scenes and the boyish fighting scene. I'm not steriotyping about girls and guys but mostly guy's like action and girls like romance.

twilightfan Mon, Jan 12, 2009 at 08:22 PM EST

I LOVE ALL THE BOOKS NO MATTER WHAT PEOPLE SAY ABOUT THE SECOND ONE I MEAN COME ON WE ALL NEW IT WAS BOUND TO HAPPEN BUT PEOPLE WHO HAVE READ THE BOOKS ALL KNOW THAT JACOB AND BELLA DON'T GET TOGETHER AND EDWARD COMES BACK... BUT AS FAR AS THE NEW DIRECTOR GOES I THINK HE IS GOING TO DO AN AWESOME JOB!!!!! BECAUSE HE WANTS TO STAY MORE TRUE TO THE BOOK BUT IT SHOULDN'T BE TOO LONG!!!

zee Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 03:40 AM EST

i agree, i'm not looking forward to the whole bella and jacob drama, but we can't change the storyline.
I'm still excited about the movie, and i can't wait, i'm glad they are not replacing taylor, so i'm satisfied, i agree, whoever is directing should be responsible to fulfill the satisfaction of viewers, so *fingers crossed* Chris will do an amazing job :D

another frances Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 09:24 PM EST

for all the people that keep saying "omg i dont want to see bella and jacob together"....you guys need to shut up. shut, shut your mouth. it is inevitable. stephanie meyer wanted it to happen, it has already been inked on paper and published and distributed to thousands and millions of people around the globe.

the end. again.

Frances Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 09:21 PM EST

...First, I love how it is mentioned in the article that a good romance is supposed to make you cry...no more on that. Second, are we gonna keep switching directors...ooh there is a motorcycle in New Moon and in Breaking Dawn there is a birth..would we need a female for that movie??? It really doesnt matter. Catherine was awesome,,i dont care if she wasnt a seasoned director but she had creativity, imagination and passion. anyopne tha has read twilight can see how long that movie would have been if she added every single detail. she did an amzing job with what she could. and it sucks that she wont be on it again. i dont think that anyone can portray New Moon as well as she could have...whoever does new moon will be held responsible for satisfying the viewers that havent read the series and the viewers who have.

the end

bella cullen Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 11:33 AM EST

I agree... I in no way want to see bell fall in love with jacop and they better not have bella kiss him in eclips or kiss him or ill be really pissed off

jennifer Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 12:50 AM EST

Actully girl I don't want to see the friendship\love with jacop and bella... I want to see more bella and edward... honestly new moon was so boreing during the parts of bella and jacop... so hopefully they will have a lot of Edward still

amlaskey Sun, Jan 4, 2009 at 02:34 PM EST

i feel that a man could do the movie well..the first one was better with a woman but there are alot more actiony and boyish scenes in new moon with cars and things like that..a woman would have done good as well but a man is a good choice.

hi Thu, Jan 1, 2009 at 11:25 AM EST

I hope the new director will try and make the movie by the book, cuz "Edward" won't be gone forever and will come back for bella, like i understand he's the hero but yeah we want to see the friendship Jacab and Bella has, cuz yeah, and i hope w/e the director will be, Better try to make the movie decent or good, and what all the fans want, we want edward in but that will change up the book and yeah dont want that :) Just plz

Mrs. Cullen Thu, Jan 1, 2009 at 10:55 AM EST

I love twilight but I hated the first director. She made it seem low budget and it felt like I was watching a documentary sometimes. Don't get me wrong I love the movie and would have watched it no matter what but I think it definitely could have been better.

Dyah Thu, Jan 1, 2009 at 06:45 AM EST

I recognize that the director must have 'special background' from the scene when the father always reminds Bella to bring along "the pepper bottle" and when I notice that neither Bella and Edward ever says "I love you" (am I right about this ?). Instead, the director prefer to show the deep feeling between Bella and Edward through their eyes, the silence (the scene of the lion fall in love with the lamb) and Edward's protective instinct towards Bella. I think these things show female typical way of caring, feeling and expectation to boy or man.
I'm a little bit doubt whether a male director would be as sensitive as female director. Don't you think it's a natural gift between male and female ? Let's see the result..

Sidra Thu, Jan 1, 2009 at 06:28 AM EST

At first I was like "NO WAY CAN A MAN DO THIS."
But then I saw Kristen as Bella and decided that no director can make her look lovesick to the degree she's supposed to be.

MP Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 04:21 PM EST

I think NEW MOON is actually quite suited to be translated into a screenplay and could be filmed well by either a male or female director because the book is in 3 parts. If this series is going to be successful on the big screen they need to continue the Bella/Edward romance - period. Having Jacob in there as the third party is fine but the films need to concentrate on Bella/Edward. The film basically needs to have about 45 minutes devoted to the 1st part of the book with maybe stuff thrown in, have 30 minutes devoted to Bella/Jacob with flashbacks or short scenes showing Edward, and then devote the last 45 minutes to the final part of the book.
What they could do is have the Bella/Jacob friendship start while the Cullens are still in town so they can continue to show Edward. One thing that I can almost guarantee will destroy the movie and the series is if they disappear the character of Edward or the Edward/Bella pairing for an hour or more. Romances that do that NEVER do well.

Edward+Bella= forevermore Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 11:34 PM EST

I think a woman would do so much better! Im not racial to men but women just always like romancier things and men always like action things.not that the movie shouldnt have equal amounts of both.

#1fanpire Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 10:44 PM EST

Cathrine did okay with the movie but she added some stuff like the whole dinner scene and took away stuff, like Edward hearing Bella say his name and I love you, Jakes car isnt mentioned and thats a big deal in New moon, I think a guy is going to do awesome because the motorcycles and the car and everything are a big deal with New moon I cant wait,,, Bye bye cathrine

brooke Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 11:08 AM EST

OMIGOD. CATHERINE HARDWICK HAS TO GO! SHE RUINED THE MOVIE! ALL SHE KNOWS HOW TO DO IS CHEAP CHEESY CHICK FLICKS! GO DUDE DIRECTOR! AND I HOPE YOU DO BETTER!

Muriel Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 10:42 AM EST

A man can direct any sequel. It depends on how he realizes the book. Peter Jackson did an awesome job with LOTR. So with the ones who directed THE NOTEBOOK, and A WALK TO REMEMBER.

Brian Mon, Dec 29, 2008 at 02:42 PM EST

Edward’s a d-bag and Bella’s an uncharismatic bore.

To call her the object of everyone’s obsession is ridiculously laughable but I do enjoy the irony that everyone’s favorite vampire is a glorified pedophi1e.

ps - congratulations to Stephanie Meyers for crafting the female protagonist as a medley of every female stereotype in the book…passive/aggressive, indecisive, manipulative, selfish, illogical, irrational, and utterly devoid of meaning or purpose without a man at her side!

colorful Sun, Dec 28, 2008 at 08:08 AM EST

hmm i reckon we need a decent director for new moon to take off cos THE HERO IS HARDLY IN IT T__T" doesnt matter if its a man or woman..
so im curious to see how this one turns out
btw catherine hardwicke wasnt a great director for twilight =/

meggo Wed, Dec 24, 2008 at 04:28 AM EST

you sound like a true feminist/equalist. thank you. i wish more ideas like this were put forth in the eye of the media for feminism

Nathan Sun, Dec 21, 2008 at 12:34 AM EST

a guy shouldnt have any problem directing new moon, as long as he sticks to the novel. the actors too will be able to help capture the chemistry since they were in the last movie too

MPV Sat, Dec 20, 2008 at 11:34 PM EST

Ill probaly come out crying also.... and I don't like the jacop character eaither and I don't care if the diretor change as long they make breaking dawn a movie...illl be happy

alice Fri, Dec 19, 2008 at 01:31 AM EST

And of course ill probaly come out in the theater crying in "new moon",,,, during the break up part and the italy parts...because those are so good, but hopefully the diretor makes the bella and jacop parts intresting, because I hate them in the book.... all in all I am a big twilight fan, my life is all about it 24\7.....
""GO TEAM CULLENS""

alice Fri, Dec 19, 2008 at 01:24 AM EST

NEW MOON SUCKED, WHAT THE HELL ARE U TALKING ABOUT EDWARD IS A GOD.. WELL IN MY LIFE LOL LOL I READ ALL THE BOOKS AND NEW MOON WAS THE WORST NOT TO MAKE PEOPLE MAD, I LOVE THE ENDING BUT COME ON THE JACOP AND BELLA ARE PARTS WERE SO BORING FOR ME, I JUST WANTED TO HURRY UP AND GET BACK TO CULLENS PARTS... ITS A VAMPIRE LOVE STORY I WANT TO HEAR ABOUT BELLA AND EDWARD NOT BELLA AND JACOP.... THAT'S WHY PART 3 AND 4 ARE THE BEST..... espeaclly part 4.... that will be the best movie,,, I love part 4 so much

Al Wed, Dec 17, 2008 at 02:57 PM EST

I'm not sure about a guy or girl but she did realy good and I have memorized the books by heart and she had it almost perfectly done (haveing everything like the book). I'm not sure if a guy would do the smae. Is he talking to stephanie miar? And has he even read the book? And does hereally understand the what is happening in the book? We'll have to wait until the movie, and If we don't like it we can always complain.

Michelle Chatzi Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 11:19 PM EST

i d0nt care who films as long as its like the book

Carol M Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 07:09 AM EST

It doesn't matter really. As long as the director gets as close to the books as possible. He does need to keep it real with Bella and Edward though. Cannot lose that chemistry and connection with these two kids!

Kathryn Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 08:20 PM EST

I just love edward. I agree 100% with that the middle part in the second book was horendous/boring. Book three had a good fight seen in it and it would be goood for the guys, because they just love action. Book four was the best part of the saga, I just love the intensity, adrenaline and the exitment. I really wish they kept going with the saga, like harry potter. I want to know more about her new abillities and her new familiy.
Anyway, I would like to experience a males point of the second film, and seehow it goes.

Danielle Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 05:04 PM EST

i dont think that she did a good job.....the events didnt match the timing in the book....and a lot was left out...personally although i am a female i dont think a woman has the experience of making a good film...but as a twilight fan i would def. see the movie regardless

monica Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 04:15 PM EST

i personally think that catherine did a horrible job. it was way too campy and most of the action and special effects were horrible. oh and the fact that it's the highest grossing debut from a female director has abso-freaking-lutely nothing to do with her. It doesn't matter who directed, Twilight fans were going to tune in regardless. She was just lucky enough to be attached to the project. Oh and who better to depict the emotions of horny teenagers than a man.

movemesinima Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 10:44 AM EST

NO NO NO! Chris Weitz is the last person I want directing anything that matters to me! For those of you who saw the Golden Compass and liked it, you clearly didn't read the books. I did, every year since I was 10. They were the most important thing in the world to me. I waited for the Golden Compass movie for 2 years, with realistic expectations. I know that one never fully enjoys a movie based on their favorite book. BUT WTF CHRIS WEITZ!? He ruined everything about it(I blame him twice over as he was also the Editor, never a good idea to do both!) He changed major plot twists and ended the film 3 chapters away from the real ending, effectively ruining the moving tragedy. I have hated him ever since. His other movies aren't exactly great cinema either, I mean About a Boy was watchable but do I really want the Director of American Pie Directing the next Twilight?? NO NO NO NO NO! CHRIST WEITZ YOU ALREADY RUINED MY MY FAVORITE BOOK OF ALL TIME,DO NOT RUIN MY SECOND FAVOURITE!

Laer Carroll Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 02:46 PM EST

Hey, Shakespeare wrote (and probably first) directed "Romeo and Juliet." That's about as heart-breaky and angsty as you get. And Nicholas Sparks writes all these books that are made into weepies. And Richard Curtis wrote and directed "Love Actually" which has 8 love stories in it and begins "...Love actually IS all around."

!!!! Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 01:01 AM EST

To me it does't matter if a male or female directs the movie New Moon. However New Moon has heaps of emotion and whoever directs it needs to have the same amount as the book.

Heidi, W, Spilman Sat, Dec 13, 2008 at 02:05 PM EST

hay i don't care who directs the next movir for twilight but as long as the romance isn't replased and minimized i am good just please increase the romance.

Ceed Sat, Dec 13, 2008 at 03:45 AM EST

Is it true that the new Jacob is half filipino? Haha. Even if i am also a filipino, i don't want anyone from the original being recast... Hate new faces. Hahaha... I'm still TEAM EDWARD. Edward! Yeah! Edward forever... Hahaha... Posting from Nokia 3660...

Ceed Sat, Dec 13, 2008 at 03:40 AM EST

Wahahaha! Im so addicted to twilight saga. Btw, pls whoever the director is and whatever he is, pls do make the next installment better than the first and don't do much cutting and revising... Its really disappointing. Im looking forward for it...

JaZ Fri, Dec 12, 2008 at 07:53 PM EST

Whatever they do just don't make bella fall in love jacop, or I will be one pissed off FAN, ITS ALL ABOUT EDWARD AND BELLA NOTHING ELES LOL

lizzy33 Fri, Dec 12, 2008 at 06:16 PM EST

I don't think it matters that much if a man directs the sequel as opposed to a woman. I just think they had to get hardwicke out of there. I was very disappointed with the movie. Not all of my disappointment had to with the director though. I really would like them to get a new screenplay writer. But obviously that is not going to happen for this one. The one thing that might make that better is if they extend this movie an extra hour so it won't be as choppy.

Shelby Lee Fri, Dec 12, 2008 at 04:02 PM EST

I am a todal Twilight freak and I think that someone need to direct the movie "New Moon." To me it doesn't matter if the directer is a man or waman as long someone films it I am ok with it

Fri, Dec 12, 2008 at 03:47 PM EST

I don't think it matters who directs, as long as the movie's good!

Arthur Fri, Dec 12, 2008 at 01:06 PM EST

I have to say as much as I prefer a woman directing this movie (only because I know that a lot of women have that strong connection with their emotions and sensuality), reading this article made me realize that I am being sexist.

I mean I'm a guy myself and I'm very touched by this love story...as long as this new directior doesn't try to make it all sexual and testosterone-infested and really appreciates the art and beauty behind this story...I have confidence.

Tati Fri, Dec 12, 2008 at 11:37 AM EST

why can't anyone spell Jacob??
Anyways, I think that a guys perspective will be good in this movie since Bella isn't acting so fragile anymore. The End DEFINATELY would be good with a man director because of how cruel and intense(no offense) but I don't think it would be AS intense had Catherine continued it. Either way I will watch it, I am angry that they are thinking of changing Jacob's actor...I liked Taylor...just make him look older and buffer.

Sabrina Fri, Dec 12, 2008 at 02:05 AM EST

Well, call me crazy, but i think the only male director living on earth capable of pulling "New Moon" off is Ang Lee...Tim Burton? Don't get me wrong, he's a great director and I love his works, but can't imagine what he will do to this movie and have Jonny Deep play one of the Voltur?

Annabelle Thu, Dec 11, 2008 at 11:07 PM EST

i agree Tim Burton would be fantastic. he definitely has a dark quality to his work. and he really knows how to convey heartache and unrequited love.

She did a wonderful job. I have my doubts that a man who directed such insensitive movies as Pie and Compass could recreate what she did. She managed to make it beautiful, believable and not cheesy.

Clearly, it is sexist to say that a man would not be able to direct New Moon just as well as a woman - like the article said, the BEST director should be chosen, regardless of gender.

On that note, I actually agree that a man might be better for New Moon given the plot and the fact that we are now no longer living purely inside Bella's head like in Twilight. So we need more than just a female perspective.

I don't know what they would do if the original cast can't be back. hopefully its just a rumor or that they find some way to gently let people know and find a really really good Jacob if that's what they wish cause i know people who would be upset if Taylor dosen't come back.

Lucy Thu, Dec 11, 2008 at 06:24 PM EST

I just was googling new moon and I read that there is a rumor that Taylor Launter won't be coming back! is this true can anyone tell me?

Sabrina Thu, Dec 11, 2008 at 06:23 PM EST

I hope the screen writting gets better it wasn't too bad in Twilight but i hope they go up another level or two. Twilight was a decent movie but I hope New Moon will be even better the cast was great and I hope the change of director will make a HUGE difference for the BETTER!

morgan Thu, Dec 11, 2008 at 06:19 PM EST

I hope that they keep Stephanie Meyer involved and i agree not make bella seem as though she's falling in love with Jacob. I just hope it turns out amazing I for one am very excited to know that EW has released the fact that New Moon will be coming out November 20 2009 which is not too far away i'm happy about that but i hope they dont make the movie suck just to meet a release date. I would be dissaponted if it's date was changed but i would get over it. As long as the movie is good. I'm looking forward to New Moon and the rest of the books to made into Movies but i'd rather wait a little longer and get an AMAZING movie then have it come out right away and be super sucky!

Kim Thu, Dec 11, 2008 at 06:14 PM EST

I don't care if a man or woman directs it, as long as its good! I get why they say that a woman would be better but if you truly are a good director than you should be able to make a good movie.

Fan not Fanatic Thu, Dec 11, 2008 at 04:53 PM EST

I don’t care who they get to direct it as long as they don’t try to make it seem like Bella is falling in love with Jake while Edward is gone. That’s not what happened, and to twist it into something like that would be unacceptable. Jake has a crush on her, but she never stops loving Edward for a single second. I just hope they make that clear because otherwise it cheapens and distorts the whole series.

New Moon/Jacob Black Thu, Dec 11, 2008 at 04:35 PM EST

I think a man could direct the film just as well as a women if he understands the book and the feeling that it brings. It isn't as much of an action movie as say Twilght was, so that might be difficulty.
Re-casting: Honestly re-casting some of the most important characters will upset many teenage girls that are in love with the books. When you read the books you have your very own vision of EXACTLY how it should look. When you pick a cast once people have to get used to seeing these faces that replace the vivid visions they had. Re-casting someone like Kristen Taylor or Rob would make it worse. We are used to there faces now replacing them would ruin that. MANY pople would be upset which might effect things. I would be VERY upset if Taylor is taken off I really like him. We can create centaurs dragons and giants I think werewolves and a tall guy is possible. And plus Jacob isnt the only werewolf in the books so finding 1 huge guy wont do anything you will need MANY more
Keep Taylor!

Emi Thu, Dec 11, 2008 at 03:21 PM EST

I don't think it matters whether the director is a Man or Woman. The important thing is that director knows and understand the story well enough to be able to produce a movie that explained the plot and the major events that happened to the characters similar to the book.

Otherwise, the fan base for the Twilight series will be disappointed.

We'll just have to wait and see.

Mina Thu, Dec 11, 2008 at 01:26 PM EST

I think it should be a woman. it needs a woman perspective to show how Bella really felt , when Edward left her.

Michael Thu, Dec 11, 2008 at 11:22 AM EST

Ok, Twilight was a decent movie. On that note I'm going to have to agree that it was the Cast and the interaction between them that made this movie what it was. Catherine's directing...not so much. I totally agree that the cast should stay the same, but a good director would take New Moon to a level that Twilight just wasn't able to do, to "dazzle" people who were not fan's of the story already. I mean, look at Harry Potter when it switched directors, HUGE difference. I hope that is what happens with New Moon. And I think it would be ridiculous to switch any of the cast, Good casting but not so good directing/screen writing. That is just my opinion though.

regina Thu, Dec 11, 2008 at 11:16 AM EST

Jacob has to be physically in his twenties in New Moon. now unless Taylor can miraculously grow to more than 6 feet and bulk up, then they really have to get another actor.. like maybe Steven Strait.

Twilight wasn't bad. . people have to remember that the budget wasn't as high as the harry potter movies. But personally i think Peter Jackson or Chris Nolan would be amazing directores for the next movies.

Keep Taylor! Keep Taylor! Keep Taylor!!!

Nicole Cassandra Thu, Dec 11, 2008 at 07:30 AM EST

if they get a male director AND get rid of Taylor Lautner, I'll be super disappointed!

twilighter Thu, Dec 11, 2008 at 06:16 AM EST

Personally I'm glad that they got rid of Catherine because to be honest Twilight disappointed me. I get the idea that movie adaptations of novels must not be compared with the novels themselves, but the movie itself was not good. Robert Pattinson really needs to work on his acting skills, apart from 'dazzling' people..lol...I thought Krsiten and taylor were pretty good. I'm really looking forward to New Moon, my fav. book in the series.

aussie-twilighter Thu, Dec 11, 2008 at 05:59 AM EST

KEEP TAYLOR LAUTNER!!

misstran Thu, Dec 11, 2008 at 01:16 AM EST

I love how all the commentators and Twlighters in general are so intelligent, passionate and rational on this forum.

Anyway, I personally think that the highlight of the movie was the cast (for the most part) and the interactions among the characters. There were clear flaws in the movie that were a result of the director, however. Staying true to the book but also making a good movie that can stand alone cinematically is all I ask for. And as for Taylor Lautner, by the end of the movie, I could actually see him get older and muscular in the face. He's 16 and those kids go through growth spurts like no other. I'm sure by the time they shoot the movie, he'll fit the role naturally, no CGI needed. KEEP THE CAST AS IS!

newmoonalltheway Thu, Dec 11, 2008 at 12:52 AM EST

And I also think that Taylor has to go.. If he can get magically any hotter or more muscular, and reach around 6 foot ish, then I'd be shocked!

newmoonalltheway Thu, Dec 11, 2008 at 12:50 AM EST

Trust me, Twilight was not a blockbuster because of Catherine Hardwicke' success of her movies, but because the fan base of the books was already there... As long as the director does much better than what Ive seen from Twilight, and reach deep into Bella and Edward's close passion, and beautifully puts the movie together with good SCRIPT, then I'm all in for New Moon!
