'NCIS': Okay, now I get it

Ncis_l_2 Why did it take me so long to give NCIS a chance? I've loved Mark Harmon since I was 12 years old. It must've been the time slot or the fact that it's a quasi spin-off of JAG, which my mother was obsessed with back before I knew that she actually does have good taste in TV.... Anyway, I have been watching the ratings recently, and when the CBS drama set an all-time series high in this, its sixth season, for a second time, I decided it was time to tune in. A Saturday marathon on USA, combined with the need for three doses of DayQuil, was the perfect opportunity for me to do that -- for 13 hours.

The episodes I caught were from the second half of Season 4, when, SPOILER ALERT, the then NCIS director (Lauren Holly) was consumed with capturing the elusive arms dealer La Grenouille (guest star Armand Assante), who she believed killer her father; special agent Tony DiNozzo (Michael Weatherly), a notorious playboy, fell in love with a doctor, who, it turns out, he was dating undercover because she was the daughter of La Grenouille; special agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Harmon) dealt with commitment issues of his own after becoming intimate with his female counterpart in the Army's criminal investigation division; Mossad Liaison Ziva David (Cote de Pablo) found her soulmate in a Navy Lieutenant dying of radiation poisoning; and special agent Timothy McGee (Sean Murray), a.k.a. McGeek, sorta confessed his feelings for forensic specialist Abby Sciuto (Pauley Perrette) while saving her from a delusional fan of the crime novels he pens under the anagram Thom E. Gemcity.

I had no idea NCIS had this much character drama in it. Nor did I expect it to have as much humor and sweetness: Gibbs appears to enjoy hitting DiNozzo on the back of the head almost as much as he loves kissing Abby on the cheek (pictured). (I say that is just fatherly appreciation for a job well done on those computers that she's been known to talk to, but my mother thinks that Gibbs and Abby might someday get it on -- discuss!).

While I play catch up and program my DVR to record all episodes of NCIS (Tuesdays at 8 p.m. on CBS; weekdays from 5 to 8 p.m. on USA), tell me if you're a fan, a deserter, or someone who's yet to enlist.

I will always be a Kibbs fan.

Kate and Gibbs for life!

I think Abby and DiNozzo and McGee are fathered by Gibbs. Abby and McGee have been known to like each other since they went out on a date before McGee officially joined Gibbs' team. Tony and Ziva...ick. I don't like Ziva, but I love Tony. He's such a great guy. I'm glad Ziva got left in Isreal. I wish they'd keep her there, but I know it's [unfortunately] not the end for her yet.

NCIS is the greatest show ever. Tomorrow is another marathon. Yay. Mainly Kate episodes!

I just got hooked on the show by my husband. He found it on USA.

It may not be 100% realistic, but it is GREAT!

I am over 50!

neko Kaji! (I'm a fire cat BOOYA!) Tue, May 12, 2009 at 08:26 AM EST

I just so happened to leave the tv on after my ritual SVU eppisode and BAM! a new obsession was born!
I absolutely LOVE Gibbs, Abby, Ducky, McGee,and yes even the flirtasious DiNozzo. One of the best shows around! I have, unfortunatly, missed alot of GibbsxAbby scenes but just last night I saw the new eppisode where Abby is once again being hunted down ((she was a target in another eppisode where McGee's books were involved.))Honestly, the scene in the elivator was so amazing it made me 'squee'! It was exactally what i needed after the tourcher the new eppisode of another obsession, House MD, had caused me. I also remeber Gibbs kissing Abby's bandaged finger and that was cute too!
The Ducky Abby scenes are adorable also. The hugs are sweet and I nearly busted when Abby asked why she couldn't get a guy like Ducky and Ducky commented that he'd be avaliable if his current relationship didn't work out. I'm a fan of the show but I'm a super-fan of Abbs!!! :)

Diana Sun, Apr 12, 2009 at 12:20 AM EST

I've been watching since season 2 ( and caught up with season 1 through DVD),and thoroughly love all the characters.I'm 41 and my mum and siblings and bro-in-law and my 3 girls ages 7 to 11 love the show.I often threaten to hand out some Gibbs-slaps to keep my rambunctious kids in line, which elicits giggles from them!

Elena Tue, Mar 3, 2009 at 11:56 PM EST

I too just discovered NCIS and now I'm hooked. Bar none the best show ever and the characters are wonderful! I just hope that the writers don't ruin it by starting a relationship between Ziva and Tony. It will ruin the show. Everything is perfect just the way it is and all those other CSI shows can't hold a candle to NCIS! I used to be a fan of The Closer and when they started a relationship between Brenda and Fritz I stopped watching the show. In my opinion the two look ridiculously mismatched and it took away from the show. NCIS on the other hand have characters with such great chemistry that brings out the best from each other and are so good together as a team that I can't decide which character I love the most! Two thumbs up!!!

I love watching N.C.I.S.IT'S MY FAVORITE SHOW ON USA.

John Andrew Prime Wed, Feb 25, 2009 at 11:42 PM EST

NCIS ought to be a Schedule II drug. I have given up watching "CSI" and "Law and Order" for it. Mark Harmon is great, I just wish his dad, also a true hero, could be here with us to witness his latest success.

This IS my favorite TV show! I'm catching up on what I've missed thanks to the USA reruns, and every evening watch 3 episodes. Great cast; I adore Abby; would like to smack Tony HARD; miss Sasha Alexander although Ziva is fantabulous. And then there's Gibbs -- he's just all around superb. Hey you TV Land Demographers -- here's a 71 year old gorgeous Grandma who GETS IT. Too bad you don't think our genre worth consideration in whether shows live or die.

j Tue, Feb 3, 2009 at 10:20 AM EST

I never looked at NCIS because I loved JAG (until it started getting soap operaish and lost its original edge) and did not wish to look at a spin off. However, I just started looking at NCIS last fall, thanks to USA reruns and I absolutely love the right mix of comedy, logic, mystery, adventure and character development. I like that each episode can stand on its own without a viewer needing too much prior understanding of storylines etc. And most of all, the cast. WOW. Amazing group of actors. Love the show, love the cast.

mariposa Fri, Jan 30, 2009 at 06:22 PM EST

I started watching NCIS back towards the end of season 2! Since I didnt know what it stood for I would never have chosen to watch it. Also in the UK it isn't promoted all that much!
I used to have it on in the background for lack of anything else and one day I actually paid attention and quite liked it. Then season 3 started and I was hooked!
It was a very fortunate discovery!
BTW I'm 20 and because I watched the marathons so I could catch up on any missed episodes, I got my 12 year old sister interested in it and my 9 year old brother (though probably doesn't get a lot of it) thinks its the coolest show ever!
The character's are just so likeable its great watching them, even in those episodes which didnt have very interesting storylines. In saying that, every episode in season 6 this far has just blown me away in all aspects!
NCIS totally deserves more award nominations and more recognition than its previously gotten! I hope its around for many years to come!

anonymous Sat, Jan 24, 2009 at 02:13 AM EST

NCIS. The words of heaven, It is a great show and im glad you enjoy it. tony is great, abby is funny mcgeek is ait. it rocks

Tara O'Shea Fri, Jan 23, 2009 at 11:45 AM EST

My mum also got me hooked with that same marathon on boxing day, and I am completely caught up as of Monday, now. I can't get over how much I have enjoyed it--particularly the humour. And I'm with Abby: Gibbs is totally a silver fox. I grew up watching harmon on "St. Elsewhere" but I never quite got the whole heartthrob thing until Gibbs. Boy Howdy.

While the storytelling hasn't always been 100%, the characters and performances are amazing, and I'm continually impressed with the character development and close attention the writers pay to continuity.

Also, it's such a huge treat to see David McCallum each week! I love that both he and Robert Vaughn (His Man from U.N.C.L.E. co-star) are still working steadily. Ducky is adorable and charming, and I hope they keep bringing Tori Higginson back the way they did Col. Mann with Gibbs last year.

j scheetz Fri, Jan 23, 2009 at 09:55 AM EST

love this show, so does my husband. It is not filthy like most programming and causes one to THINK.

a fan Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 04:53 PM EST

I never watched JAG, but have watched NCIS since it's stand alone pilot, and absolutely love it!
And for those of you that watched last night--WOW, what a way to come back from the break!

Norah S. Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 04:30 PM EST

I recently got into NCIS. It is a wonderful show! I'm so thankful to USA for airing 3 hours of it every weekday! Provided me the opportunity to get caught up...quickly. :-D This new season is great too!!!

sarah Sun, Jan 4, 2009 at 11:02 AM EST

I'm 17 and have been watching since the beginning. One of the BEST shows on tv these days... ahhh how i love me some Mark Harmon and Michael Weatherly ;) But seriously, the playful side of these characters, all whilst dealing with sometimes gruesome crimes... A++ TV in my book!

NavyResGirl Thu, Jan 1, 2009 at 03:21 PM EST

Just thought of another reason to love the show:
* Great Guest Stars and Recurring Characters:
Charles Durning ("Call of Silence" Season 2)
Lindsay Price ("Forced Entry" - Season 2 and "Frame-Up - Season 3
Rudolf Martin - Several episodes beginning with "Bete Noire" in Season 1.
Sherilyn Fenn ("Left For Dead - Season 1)
David Keith ("See No Evil" - Season 2)
Mya ("Pop Life" Season 2)
Jayne Brook ("Cover Story" Season 5)
Kathleen York ("The Ex-File" - Season 5)
Marilyn Monroe (oops, sorry that was Pauley Perrette - "Witch Hunt" - Season 4.)
Alan Dale (recurring Seasons 1&2)
Joe Spano (recurring since Season 1)
Muse Watson (recurring since Season 3)
Jessica Steen (recurring since Season 1 until...)
Susannah Thompson - Season 4/5
Scottie Thompson (no relation) Season 4/5
Armand Assante (recurring Season 4/5 until...)

I could go on, but I've already listed more than I intended.

Jennifer Perry Thu, Jan 1, 2009 at 02:21 PM EST

Don't feel bad, Mandi, Hollywood, especially the entertainment press doesn't tend to pick up on what the public likes or wants these days.

NCIS is solid gold, I never miss it. Tuesday nights at 8pm is the one night I'm glued to my tv set.

Deena Thu, Jan 1, 2009 at 02:07 PM EST

I don't remember how I got to NCIS but I know that I got hooked. Didn't watch S1&2 cos not a bog fan of Sasha A. Hated her character in DC.
I love the cast, the characters and I love the stories.Love how they play some israeli music every time Ziva and Tony are eye to eye :D
The only show that I have to watch. All the others can wait but not NCIS. It is my No.1

Sam Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 11:16 PM EST

I just love McGee. And I want his apartment--I don't care how much Tony rags on it, I love it.

shanna Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 08:30 PM EST

I discovered this show around season 3, and fell in love with it then and there. I'm now the proud owner of the full set of dvds.

Whether you want comedy or drama, you've got it. An episode like Dog Tags will leave me giggling, while Call of Silence from season two just rips my heart out. I think the best shows are the ones that have that perfect balance between drama and comedy and I'm so glad to see that others are finding it and enjoying it as well.

Steph Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 06:26 PM EST

NCIS is the jam. i've always wondered how it's one of the biggest shows on tv, yet no one i know seems to watch it. ::shrug::

KC Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 04:20 PM EST

I just turned 19 and I've been watching the show obsessively for three years now...the characters and story lines are appealing to all ages, not just those "over 40." I just hope in the future NCIS gets more recognition from award shows - the fact that Mark Harmon has not won an Emmy or a Golden Globe is an absolute crime.

Teresa Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 03:53 PM EST

I, too, didn't discover NCIS until it was picked up in syndication by USA, but I AM HOOKED! This is by far one of the BEST shows on television today. I actually gave up watching House to watch NCIS (mainly because USA plays the newest epsiode of House Friday night but doesn't so this for NCIS' current season). And in regards to Tom ... I'm 26 and I watch NCIS; it's not just for the older folks.

HobbitKiller Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 10:22 AM EST

I also came into NCIS late in the game. How late? I didn't start watching until halfway through the fourth season.

What got me hooked was actually a rerun that, yes, my mom was watching. It was the fourth episode of season three when Ziva first officially joined the team. I quickly caught myself up by watching marathons of the show on the internet, and I've been deeply in love ever since.

Now I'm the one getting all of my friends hooked. The show is fantastic. The characters are developed but also have cute personality quirks. The show isn't afraid to take risks.

I don't understand why certain TV experts snub the show, or why CBS does the bare minimum to promote it. If eighteen million people watch a show, I think that's a good sign that there's something there. Plus, how many shows get more popular in their sixth seasons?

clynngo Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 03:44 AM EST

I pretty much stopped watching regular tv when I went to college, but NCIS is the only show I keep watching religiously. I've dumped all the other crime dramas I used to watch--- all the csi's, bones, criminal minds, etc--- but NCIS is still as funny, sweet, and character driven as it was in its first season.

I'll be a die-hard fan until the day this show ends.

Jess Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 03:35 AM EST

I totally watched it from the spinoff beginning, I'm a hardcore JAG fan. I'm ashamed to say I've fallen off the wagon recently; the past couple of years on Tuesday nights I had soccer practice, so I missed most of it. However, I'm a firm believer in owning my shows, so I've just received seasons 3-5 for Xmas and BOY do I intend to catch up!

I've always loved the character's comraderie; Abby's affectionate endurance of Tony, Ziva's subtle badassery, McGee's blossoming (oh, he's grown so much!) into a real agent, Gibbs' reluctant (or not so reluctant, sometimes) acknowledgement of his team's abilities, and Ducky's wayward stories that go absolutely nowhere (why is David McCallum so cute?). I myself miss Kate, of seasons 1 and 2, but that's a whole 'nother comment.

It's like a light-hearted CSI with characters I absolutely love.

Consider me a fan who just went a little AWOL for a bit. (And for reference, I'm 18 and have been watching JAG/NCIS for almost as long as I can remember.)

Lisa Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 12:30 AM EST

I'm 27 and I love NCIS. It's the chemistry between the actors/characters that really put this show above other crime dramas.

I got hooked after watching the episode where Tony uses something he saw in the movie "Speed" during a hostage situation. The entire time I was annoyed..."They totally ripped this off 'Speed'!" BUT...then they called Tony out on it at the end. I was hooked.

NavyResGirl Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 09:56 PM EST

Gibbs and Abby:
She may have a tad bit of a crush on him at times, but he definitely sees her as a younger sister/daughter figure.
Kind of gives me the heebee jeebees to think of them in a non-platonic way.

Amy Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 09:44 PM EST

Whee!! I love NCIS! It is my favorite show on T.V. and even though I have many other favorite shows on DVD, I inevitably find myself popping in my NCIS DVDs.

Monica Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 09:08 PM EST

I'm 29, and my Nana introduced me to the show, and promptly got me hooked! The characters and the dynamics between them absolutely make this show, and has kept it great all six seasons so far. In a reverse of a few commenters, NCIS has led me to Netflix the Man from U.N.C.L.E and catch a much younger and equally delightful David McCallum!

Jessica Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 08:11 PM EST

I agree with your mom about Gibbs and Abby. He needs to be with someone who both understands him and can get him to loosen up a bit :) Besides, over the years they have had some flirty conversations which, I personally, would find not *right* between a father and daughter.

Kitti Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 07:32 PM EST

NCIS is excellent due, in large measure, to the great chemistry of the ensemble. The person often overlooked in articles about NCIS is David McCallum.

Mr. McCallum is a joy to watch and is as fabulous as ever. I was young during "The Man from U.N.C.L.E." years, so watching Mr. McCallum in the MFU DVDs is a thrill. For someone who didn't know about being a "sex symbol", he certainly knew how to get attention ("Alexander the Greater Affair" will get any woman's attention).

The US really missed so much by not seeing Mr. McCallum in "Sapphire & Steel" or "Colditz", both great UK series.

Mr. McCallum is a fine actor with an awesome career. NCIS has been a wonderful vehicle to showcase both the dramatic and comedic sides of this talented actor.

Bravo!

NavyResGirl Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 07:31 PM EST

Hey TC,
I'm sure I know who you're talking about but won't say it here because I don't want to spoil it for Mandi (or anyone else who hasn't seen Season 4). That one was pretty hard to take, eh?

Brantley Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 07:26 PM EST

I am another NCIS fan from day one. To me it is the new M*A*S*H, that is, a great ensemble cast. A cast that could take a bad script (if they ever got one), and make it good. On and off the screen, the actors are like family, and it shows. I watch the new episodes on CBS, as well as the re-runs on USA and ION when I can. Long Live NCIS!

Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 07:22 PM EST

I didn't know of NCIS' existance until the series was in it's second season and that was only because a friend told me about. She raved on and on about it, so I gave it a go. I didn't like it. I didn't like the colours, the dynamic, the weirdness of the people. But she insisted so I made myself watch a couple more episodes. Still no.

Then I heard about the uproar from fans regarding Kate's death and that gave me an enormous admiration that a show managed to pull such a surprise. So I watched a couple more again. And then *click*. I got it. I felt it. I loved it. Now I can't imagine why I didn't like at first. The humour of the show is fantastic, and the characters...so so loveable. The science? Much better and less pretentious than other shows.

My advice, my plea - if you don't like it, please give it a couple more chances. You need that time to erase all the bad tv you used to watching.

*end of essay*

TC Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 07:11 PM EST

Glad you finally 'get it', Mandi. I came to NCIS in season 3 during a time when I was rather jaded about TV. It seemed everything *I* deemed watchable was being axed or was 'jumping the shark'.

But I gave NCIS a look due to a certain recurring guest star. Now, if NCIS was just a flash in the pan, I would have quit watching after said guest star's role was terminated in season 4. Instead, I fell completely in love with the entire ensemble and went out and bought the seasons on DVD.

The love affair has endured ever since.

Teresa Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 06:52 PM EST

I LOVE NCIS too! It is a great show, well written with great characters. I want all seasons on DVD.

Julie Vranicar Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 06:06 PM EST

I really LOVE NCIS!!! I have watched it since its beginning, from 2003, and it just gets better and better every time I watch it! I think it is the best written, best directed, and most of all,has the best acting on television. Mark Harmon and all the other cast members are just terrific on this show, and along with the crew make this show the huge success it is. As long as the show continues to be on t.v. I will be watching it!!

Elaina Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 04:56 PM EST

I was - and still am - very upset with "House" for their drastic cast changes, so when NCIS's executive producer, Shane Brennan, was quoted in TV Guide as saying that they were "NOT pulling a House" after the NCIS cliffhanger last season, I decided to give the show a try. Thanks to USA, I am nearly caught up with all the episodes, and absolutely love the series. Kudos to Shane Brennan for saying that he'll bring the cast back and MEANING it. That kind of loyalty to characters is what keeps us tuning in week after week. Great show - great cast.

sunspotlady Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 04:43 PM EST

Mandi you and me both! I spent last Saturday the same way watching NCIS for the first time ever (I know, I guess I've been under a rock for six years)and am now a totally obsessed fan. I immediately purchased Seasons 1 and 2 from E-bay and downloaded an episode to my iPod so I could watch it yesterday on my lunch hour for a "fix." I should have known better than to doubt CBS who has NEVER let me down, but alas, the rock was too heavy until now. The characters on the show are SO GOOD -- each and every one of them. I can't wait for my DVDs to arrive and in the meantime, the DVR is programmed and I have ample space to record as I've deleted everything else. Oh, can I just add that Michael Weatherly is PERFECT and he can "bother me" 24/7 if he so desires.

Gus Bricker Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 04:18 PM EST

Tony is the glue of the show, the comic relied, plus he's brave and the most complex character on the show, maybe TV.

But he's also the worst written character on the show, because they change him to often and always make him out to be the bad guy, whether it be his harrassment of McGee or not noticing Ziva has feeling for him. Hello, he was a player, he knows about Ziva!

It makes him look stupid.

Plus, Tony THINKS Ziva has a boyfriend(finding the photo in Nine Lives)

Jo Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 03:59 PM EST

Forgot to mention my age, 25, since we're all talking about demographics for the show, too. As for people saying there's nothing in the Abby & Gibbs camp...

Abby: So, what about you, Gibbs? Any fetishes?
Gibbs: I have three ex-wives. I don't have time for fetishes.
and
Abby: Of course you're back; I can feel your badge! That is your badge, right?

Conversations you'd have with your father/daughter...? I think not.

Jo Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 03:54 PM EST

I agree with your mom re: Abby and Gibbs. There's a vibe there that doesn't belong in any parental relationship - too much flirting and suggestiveness in some of their dialogue for starters!

Such an NCIS addict, I'm always pleased to see someone else join the fray! Long may it continue!

NavyResGirl Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 03:12 PM EST

Oh, forgot to mention, I will proudly turn 50 next August.

NavyResGirl Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 03:09 PM EST

Welcome aboard, Mandi. Glad you've joined us. "NCIS" is the only show I'm addicted to and only one I own on DVD.
I've been watching from the beginning - actually the pre-beginning when the characters of; Gibbs, DiNozzo, Ducky and Abby were introduced on "JAG".

Why am I hooked?
* Unique writing. Where else will you hear dialog like:
Abby: "You shaved your mustache! I liked you with a little hair on your face"
Gibbs: "I still have my eyebrows.
* Great continuity - these writers actually talk to each other.
* Inside (well not too inside) jokes - including one with Tony (Michael Weatherly) saying that he'd have a better chance of getting a date with Jessica Alba than....., To those not in the know, Michael and Jessica dated while starring on "Dark Angel"
* Lighting. Yes, lighting. The other procedurals are literally too dark. The lab, the morgue almost all crime scenes.
* Kate and Ziva's clothing. No designer, low-cut white outfits to investigate a bloody body - cough*CSI*cough

Priscilla Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 02:58 PM EST

Wow everyone is saying how old they are. I am 17 and I have been watching it since season 3.

I got my whole family hooked

Kay Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 02:35 PM EST

I have been watching since the 1st season. I bet the actress who played Kate is irritated the show is still going strong, she was good, wonder where she is now. But I love Ziva! It still surprises me how much stupidity Gibbs tolerates from Tony, and Ziva could kick all their butts, probably Gibbs too! Too bad they killed off Jenny, as a red-head I never see enough of us on TV. Did you know that Abby is actually a blonde? Trippy!! I would like to see her and McGee hook up, only to get him some action.. We still watch everyday too, almost all 3 episodes too! But then I also watch all the CSI's..

irish Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 02:35 PM EST

Love, love , love this show. I live close to DC so why can't I find anyone like these guys......Keep bringing them too us. I also have to agree with your Mom, I couldn't stay away from JAG either......

Megan Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 02:32 PM EST

NCIS is the best show on tv. I have been watching it since the first season, which was when I was 12. I loved it then and I still love it now. A whole bunch of people are just starting to watch it because of all its recent publicity. If you watch it, watch it because you like it, not because it is becoming popular.

Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 02:30 PM EST

i still dont get it

Bai Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 02:19 PM EST

I started watching NCIS when there was a JAG/NCIS marathon on July 4th. I wasn't a big fan of it, at first, because I was kinda upset that JAG was canceled (I'm a huge JAG fan) and NCIS was the "replacement" in a way. Then I saw Dead Man Walking... I loved how Ziva was falling for the dying Lt. When the Season 6 premiere rolled around, I watched and instantly became hooked! I watch it everyday on USA Network, and I even have an NCIS tee!

Lynn Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 01:54 PM EST

Yes, if not for the reruns on the USA network, I would not have discovered and liked NCIS. Now, I watch on both USA and CBS every time it's on, especially the marathon last Saturday. I guess better late than never, huh...

Tess Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 01:27 PM EST

I'm another one of the folks who has been watching since day 1, when JAG did the crossover eps. Great characters, fantastic banter, and their true affection for each other keep me coming back week after week, long after the CSIs have fallen off of my "must see" list. NCIS is always at the top!

(Another under 40 here!)

Anne Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 01:10 PM EST

NCIS isn't artistic like Mad Men or edgy like...well, what's edgy on TV anymore? Even House is loosing it's sparkle. But I love NCIS because it's ALWAYS good. It's not the best show but it's only one that's consistantly entertaining, every week. It makes me laugh and sometimes cry. A little cheesy at moments, yeah, but when it matters the most it hits me hard. I always want more, and it annoys me that the critics ignore it. Heck, there's a reason so many people watch! Thanks, Mandi, for finally getting the message.

By the way, I'm fifteen.

Janet Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 12:52 PM EST

I am 34 and discovered NCIS last year due to writers strike, and House loosing some of its appeal. I had stayed away from it at first because I thought it was just another CSI, boy was I wrong. I love this show, and wish I tried it earlier. On Gibbs and Abby, I see it more as a father daughter type a deal.

Nina Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 12:34 PM EST

BEST SHOW ON THE TUBE NCIS FREAKING RULES

dublin04 Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 12:34 PM EST

I've been hooked for awhile and even though my boyfriend is like, "You're watching that again???(NCIS daily USA mini-marathon)" -he still got me Season 1 for Christmas!!!! I just don't get sick of it!

Joanie Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 12:27 PM EST

I also fell in love with NCIS while watching a marathon on USA. It is a really good show. Not as gruesome as CSI, with a nice mix of drama/humor. I'm hooked!!!

Joel Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 12:05 PM EST

It's always seemed like a CSI clone to me. Even if it's not, I watch way too much TV now to really add another one (I've discovered the Law and Order series, resulting in my DVR box being pretty freakin' full with HD eps of L&O, plus eps of SVU and CI on USA, Bravo, and local stations on weekends.

Anna Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 11:45 AM EST

Where has everyone been? I find it amusing at times that it took 6 years before ratings finally reflected what many loyal viewers already knew: that this JAG spinoff is not really a spin-off but a mega hit standing solidly on its own.

Unlike many acroynm titled shows we will not mention here, NCIS has stayed consistent with their dyfunctional family of crime fighters. While there's character drama, there's humor too, and an almost self deprecating wit that grounds the show and its viewers. The show has always been about their cast, not afraid to show they care about one another and heck, even the head slapping, pranks and wise cracking can count as affections too. The NCIS team are not the Waltons but boy, they're just as fun to watch.

Tipper Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 11:20 AM EST

CBS owes USA big-time, man. I had friends that liked it, and I wanted to know why, so I watched one of the marathons on USA this summer. It took a few watchings but, while the plots are generally weak, the characters more than make up for it (esp. Ziva, Tim, Tony and Gibbs), and now I catch it every week. As someone said, it is exactly like comfort food -- it's no great dish, but it tastes good, so who cares? It was Season 5's Chimera that finally sold me--I keep hoping for another one like it. If you haven't downloaded that one yet from iTunes or Amazon--do!

Casey Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 10:04 AM EST

Wow finaly a critic who writes about NCIS and ACTUALLY did watch it!
I'm surprised, no more low rated
shows to watch? I guess that now some of the critics favorites are being canceled they have to write about something else.

Well anyway, NCIS is a fun show, loved it since the first episode.

Tre Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 10:00 AM EST

I think I stayed away because of the network the show is on, CBS. I tend to not like any of the shows that are broadcast by CBS (All CSIs included) and so I just assumed that I wouldn't like any shows.

But I just happened to catch a few episodes on USA and I realized that I'm now hooked on the show and even found myself searching through YouTube to look for any episodes that I've missed.

I really think USA is doing a great service for this show because I believe all new fans are coming from watching the show on USA.

mchnelson Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 09:45 AM EST

I'm a fan or should that be fanatic? Have been since the crossover JAG episodes. I've been to 3 NCIS Fan Fests in LA and was lucky enough to spend 8 wonderful hours watching it being filmed on set last March. David McCallum is an amusing man. So what? I hear you say, here's the what. "I'm from the UK". Channel Five start airing Season 5 on 9th January and I'm hoping this new found enthusiasm, that is happening across the pond, finds its' way to these shores and our TV Guides start giving it some exposure. It was worth every penny I've spent visiting the US. BTW Catch Mark Harmon in Oklahoma for his charity baseball game that he does May/June. Usually a baking hot day but he signs and signs when he is not playing. Nice guy. Backroom crew are very nice as well.

Karen Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 09:15 AM EST

Those of us watching and loving since the first episode are finding it amusing that it suddenly is getting the attention it should have had all these years. It's simply quality tv with something for everyone, great writing and acting and characters you simply love to watch.

Ali Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 08:26 AM EST

I have loved Mark Harmon since I was a kid too...back in the Chicago Hope days. That's why I gave NCIS a try. I never catch the first runs, but I watch it on USA a lot.

James T. Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 08:25 AM EST

Becky, I realize that NCIS isn't a CSI Spinoff, I just thought it was better than the CSI spinoffs that are out there.

Sulaf Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 04:27 AM EST

I'm 22 and I've been a fan since the very beginning. It's a good, lighthearted show, lots of fun.
The great thing about NCIS is that it has so much well-integrated humor that when real drama insues you tend to appreciate it even more... as opposed to other shows where the drama never ends and you're just like "enough already!"
Plus I've had a crush on Michael Weatherly since his Dark Angel days :)

pbb Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 02:48 AM EST

I started watching at the beginning of season 3. At that time the leading female character had left the show and another one had been brought in. Since they were also showing reruns of season 1 and 2, I didn't quite get it until I realised what happened to Kate and how Ziva came along. This show has me hooked ever since. Living in Europe, with no direct broadcasts from the US, I have to find different ways of catching each show as it's being broadcasted. I love the series, all the characters, the interaction and humor between them. The cases are always somewhere between ok and good, but they are not the most important thing, for me. Love it and I thank everyone at CBS for providing so many seasons of NCIS!

Vix Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 02:00 AM EST

I put off watching NCIS because I thought it was a CSI rip-off but color me surprised when I gave it a chance three years ago.

I love that the character development spans whole seasons and time is spent on each character.

I'm 30 and I adore Mark Harmon.

Becky Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 01:24 AM EST

James, you do realize NCIS isn't a spinoff of CSI, right?

---

Guy: NCIS. Never heard of it.
Gibbs: That’s embarrassing.
Guy: NCIS anything like CSI?
Tony: Only if you’re dyslexic.

Johanna Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 12:34 AM EST

I have slowly but surely gotten into the show over the past few months, to the point where I now own seasons 3-5 on DVD. I resisted the pull at first because I assumed it was yet another procedural that TV didn't need, but I was so wrong. I had caught episodes sporadically here and there because my parents watch it but I finally decided to really give it a chance and start tuning in every week. The characters are all phenomenal, but I admit, I definitely have a weakness for Tony and Ziva.

Mary Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 12:06 AM EST

I became a fan of NCIS during the 4th season, after avoiding it, despite the fact that my daughter kept urging me to check it out. She had become a fan of the series from the very beginning, her dorm suitemates watched it every week and talked about it incessantly. I finally gave in and have been a devoted fan ever since.

NCIS has an amazing ensemble cast, fantastic plots, and it gets better each year. The wonderful Donald Bellisario seems to have a magic touch for developing very human, warm and entertaining programs, and selecting just the appropriate actors to bring them to life.

I'm grateful that the media is finally letting their hair down and giving NCIS a chance. I just wish the studio executives would latch on to the fact that the series is popular because it exemplifies the kind of entertainment that Americans, and in fact (including young) people all around the world love to watch.

Deanna Mon, Dec 29, 2008 at 11:44 PM EST

Im 26 and I live in GA. Started watching marathons on USA at the beginning of the year due to the writers strike. Picked it up after the strike and have been watching new episodes ever since. I caught up on all 5 seasons in a matter of months, and just received Season 1 on DVD for Christmas!!! Love the characters, humor (i often find myself lauthing out loud even when I am watching alone), and I also really enjoy the plotlines (some serious, some in jest). I am looking forward to many more years of new episodes, and of repeats as I build my DVD collection!

Mon, Dec 29, 2008 at 11:35 PM EST

i'm 21 i love ncis. the chemistry between all the characters is great. the relationship between gibbs and abby is definitely father/daughter type though. he treats her like the daughter he lost.

Amy Mon, Dec 29, 2008 at 11:34 PM EST

How can you not love a show with lines like "personally I prefer a good shag." coming from the oldest member of the team! LOVED that scene! poor Duck, he meant it so innocently, and yet.... LOL

Amy Mon, Dec 29, 2008 at 11:30 PM EST

OH, forgot to add, I'm 36 and know a number of folks that are even younger than that.

Priscilla Mon, Dec 29, 2008 at 11:24 PM EST

My dad joked around and said "no wonder the ratings are sky high. It's the only thing on tv!"

Which is true, USA airs it nonstop and ION plays it too

Amy Mon, Dec 29, 2008 at 11:23 PM EST

LOVE it! I originally tuned in because of David McCallum. Once I heard he was in a new series, I decided to check it out. I, along with a lot of other Man from U.N.C.L.E. fans tuned into the two JAG episodes to see what it was all about. I loved the dark humor and decided to give it a second look that fall. I've been hooked ever since.

Priscilla Mon, Dec 29, 2008 at 11:21 PM EST

Since people seem confused, NCIS stands for Naval Criminal Investigative Service. Navy cops/csi
Although the show is NOT at all like the CSI shows.

Maybe it's just me but I find my self comparing it to FOX's Bones. Just because it has compelling investigations, yet it is very character driven.

Priscilla Mon, Dec 29, 2008 at 11:13 PM EST

still can't believe it has taken six easons for critics to get a clue! It is such a great show!!! The acting is amazing, the writing is interesting yet funny. And the fact that the actors have a lot of input on the characters is awesome! (michael weatherly is just as goofy as Tony)

Now all we need is all those award shows to open their eyes!

JR Mon, Dec 29, 2008 at 11:09 PM EST

I've watched NCIS since it began. It truly is a character drama- the evidence and mystery hold a second place to what is happening internally to Gibbs, Tony etc. The season opener this year left me totally shocked (and it all made sense!). The show also puts in little "clues" for longtime viewers such as bringing up an event from season 2. There is much consistency which is lacking in many other series. The humor, excellent actors and good cast chemistry make this show a must see for me each Tuesday night.

sam Mon, Dec 29, 2008 at 11:06 PM EST

I love it--especially David McCallum, my first crush on The Man From UNCLE many years ago. Doesn't he still look great?

Tom Mon, Dec 29, 2008 at 11:02 PM EST

The advetures of the Naval Criminal Investagative Services group are almost as fun as JAG was.I've been watching since it began and can't imagine a Tuesday night without it!

Case Mon, Dec 29, 2008 at 10:57 PM EST

Huge fan...one of the best show on...great stories with a lot of twists and or course the comedy...I attempt to get everyone hooked and with the marathons on the weekends it is quite easy...the seasons are layered perfectly with an ongoing storyline along with weekly stories that get wrapped up nicely...shows tend to drag on but a person can get sucked into a show and have some resolution in an hour which is fully satisfying...by the way NCIS stands for Naval Criminal Investigative Service...you're using the internet it is only a Google away...

Daisy Mon, Dec 29, 2008 at 10:13 PM EST

Loved JAG, loved the NCIS pilot within JAG, love NCIS.

Spunk55 Mon, Dec 29, 2008 at 10:09 PM EST

Been a fan since day 1 and still a HUGE fan. Love this show! Told others to tune in and once they did; they also got hooked. LOVE IT!!!

Kelly Mon, Dec 29, 2008 at 10:04 PM EST

Stopped watching it last year. (Have no idea still what NCIS stands for BTW)

Paul Mon, Dec 29, 2008 at 09:52 PM EST

I've never watched it because I have no idea what NCIS stands for...

CandyMaize Mon, Dec 29, 2008 at 09:49 PM EST

I'm a FAN! And have been since it was spun-off of JAG (which I was also a fan of, btw). Welcome and remember - better late than never! (and also that you can catch up on the show on DVD)

Monica242 Mon, Dec 29, 2008 at 09:31 PM EST

Wow, you fell in love with it during its worst season! That's impressive!

I started watching mid-3rd season and it was love at first sight. I went back and started from the beginning and the relationship between Gibbs and everyone else - but especially Tony and Abby - really solidified my love for the show.

This season has been phenomenal, and the comedy is as crisp as its ever been. All someone has to do it give this show a shot, and they'll get hooked.

Cristina Mon, Dec 29, 2008 at 09:22 PM EST

I guess I should count myself lucky that I started watching this mid season of the first season! I adore this show and everyone on it. I was devastated...DEVASTATED... when Kate was killed. It was like I lost a family member. I went onto message boards looking for comfort with other people who were as shocked as I was. It is a great show, although, I worked at a government agency and I used to joke around with the counter intelligence guy (he watched it too) about how often OUR director ever came out of his office or even had time to meddle in the affairs of us lower on the totem pole. That part does irk me a little, but I suspend my disbelief just because I love the rest of the characters.

Amber Mon, Dec 29, 2008 at 09:16 PM EST

Tom, loads of people under 40 watch NCIS. I'm under 30 & adore it. Its fun & geeky & the team is fabulous (plus it doesn't hurt that Mark Harmon's still a major hottie).

samanthastevens Mon, Dec 29, 2008 at 09:12 PM EST

OMG, my husband and I barely left the house on Saturday after I got hooked on the marathon. I also kept reading about the show's ratings, and took the opportunity to tune in. Now we're hooked and the DVR is set.
This is what broadcasting is all about...and there are other shows that need time to catch on to the silent majority. How about Chuck?

ncis lover Mon, Dec 29, 2008 at 09:09 PM EST

Welcome to the NCIS fan family! I am so glad USA picked up NCIS and the fan response has been incredible. This is the little show that could...a perfect example of why shows need a chance to cultivate their audience. b/c, once your hooked, you're in for life.

mark harmon is the key to this show. how does he manage to get hotter w/ each year?

kate was great, ziva is better

really miss lauren holly, hope we get a backstory and fill some gaps

abby and gibbs, NO! gibbs and ziva, hmmm? but then again, tony and ziva?? That could be "inevitable".

mcgee, abby, ducky, vance, jimmy...what a great cast. so many possibilities, this show could go on for years. i hope it does.

Jessica Smith Mon, Dec 29, 2008 at 09:03 PM EST

I love the show. It is the perfect balance of drama and humor. Some of the other shows are too serious and they get laughed at. I think it is better to laugh with. That being said I love Tony!

BLT Mon, Dec 29, 2008 at 09:00 PM EST

and, gibbs and abby, that is not right...ugh/shudder

I agree w/ the paternal aspect of the relationship, nothing more.
