Mariah vs. Christina: Battle of the Christmas divas!

Dec 25, 2008, 08:00 AM | by Tanner Stransky

Categories: Christina Aguilera, Happy Holidays, Things That Are Awesome!

A diva putting out a Christmas album is about as standard as Santa wearing a red suit. But, truly, the efforts of our favorite Melisma Queens are such a mixed bag. For uninspired efforts, look no further than Ashanti's 2003 disc Ashanti's Christmas or Jessica Simpson's 2004 Rejoyce: The Christmas Album. (I'll leave it to you PopWatch readers to decide if those two should even be termed as "divas.")

The best diva holiday disc for years (and you best not question this assertion!) was unequivocally Mariah Carey's 1994 gem Merry Christmas, which is highlighted by jazzy jam "All I Want for Christmas is You." But this year I'm going to challenge that given by suggesting that maybe Christina Aguilera's "Christmas Time"—from her 2000 album My Kind of Christmas—could be better than Mariah's perennial fave. It's both dramatic and a holiday trifle. Watch live-in-concert versions of both here and then sound off about your favorite in the comments below.

Time to throw down, PopWatchers: Who wins the battle of the Christmas divas?

Yeah, it was Listen 2 This. I liked those, but then they started not being exclusively about music, (they started to include video games & comic books too) http://cleaning.emenace.com/upholste2b/43.html dry cleaning undefined

I appreciate Christina's vocal capabilities, but when it comes to Mariah, who generally seems unaware of where she is and uncomfortable with herself (unless she has utter control), there is no one who can quite compare to Mariah's voice [or her festivity], and as far as singing ability, few can. Yeah Judy and Barbara were nice, but they can't compete with Mariah's voice, just as Mariah could never dare to dream to compete with their ability as performers. Someone commented about "Where Are You Christmas," [sung by; Faith Hill] FYI Mariah wrote that song.

I like Christina, but mariah wins..when i listen to christina when she belts, she's like she's about to explode. Mariah has more control on the whistle register thaN christina, and can can hit very low notes, lower than christina's C#3. Mariah's christmas album was amazing, vocal acrobatics that christina can't do. Oh and there's a lot a more i can say about mariah being better than christina and it would be too long more than u can imagine. lol

christina is the best you fools!! which one is better not more classic!!!

Aj Sun, Dec 28, 2008 at 01:34 PM EST

Whitney Houston's Christmas album is the best. Now that I've gotten that out, Christina wins this battle, even though Mariah has the better album of the two.

David Sun, Dec 28, 2008 at 03:26 AM EST

Mariah! Go Mimi!!! Boo Xtina!!! Bwahahaha!!!

Classy Sun, Dec 28, 2008 at 02:42 AM EST

I mean this respectfully, but what kinda crack are most of you smokin'? While Mariah's tune is definitely a commerical classic, Xtina clearly proves to be the true diva, judging by those 2 videos. Mariah has never looked completely comfortable onstage, imo, and watching her shimmy with the gindgerbread men and other Christmas characters made me cringe. I couldn't even tell if she was truly singing live. Xtina, on the other hand, was in full voice throughout all of her jumping and choreography-never missing a single note! She interacted with the audence, covered the whole stage and belted it out full throttle effortlessly. Mariah's song is more classic, but Xtina's is more soulful and requires more talent to pull off. Mariah's bimbo act may have hit a hit a high note for that track, but there's not a note that Xtina can't hit, carry and run with.

Sun, Dec 28, 2008 at 02:13 AM EST

i love both of 'em but mariah wins hands down!! she sold over one million and counting for her classic song:all i want for christmas is you!! i don't think christina made the cut and can't believe u would even challege mariah! her album made the 10 ten for best selling x-mas albums, she stands and number 8......love you mc!!

jfms777 Sat, Dec 27, 2008 at 05:21 PM EST

Mariah. Not even close. (And I love Christina.)

Marcus Sat, Dec 27, 2008 at 03:11 PM EST

Mariah Carey wins hands down. There is no competition.
Although, as someone stated, there are better songs out there, such as Where Are You Christmas by Faith Hill.
That might just be better than Mariah's.

Adam Sat, Dec 27, 2008 at 01:40 PM EST

Mariah wins hands down. I have never even heard of Xtina's song, it sounds like it could have been sung by any pop/R&B act, very generic. Mariah's is a classic for good reason!

United Colors of Benetton 012 Sat, Dec 27, 2008 at 12:01 PM EST

Oh, Tanner. You are a fool!

Delon Sat, Dec 27, 2008 at 11:54 AM EST

Everybody on planet Earth who celebrates Xmas knows that the ultimate Xmas track is Mariah's "All i want..". It regularly shows up on the upper echelons of British charts around Xmas every year. Tanner, this post was REDUNDANT. Boooooh !

Claire Sat, Dec 27, 2008 at 10:28 AM EST

MC MC MC all the way. Like xtina, but MC wins.

macie Sat, Dec 27, 2008 at 02:49 AM EST

Duh. There's no contest here. Mariah Carey's All I Want For Christmas is You wins by a mile.

casi Sat, Dec 27, 2008 at 12:07 AM EST

MC,hands down, Her gift of voice range and the creative way in which she uses the ranges makes all her songs unique. Vocally she outperforms her peers, except maybe Mary JB. Christine always seems to be trying to do much. Her voice seems hard and guttural. She just over the top.

Derick Fri, Dec 26, 2008 at 09:16 PM EST

Christina's song doesn't have the much-needed classic arrangement. It sounds dated. But her voice is really something. Mariah's song is (personally) not the best Christmas song out there. A modern classic...maybe...because of it's Christmas movie-ready vibe. But even here (and she recorded this during her prime) her voice is struggling.

Fri, Dec 26, 2008 at 04:29 PM EST

MC wins by far! Everyone has covered 'All I Want For Christmas'...a song which Mariah wrote. Mariah's Christmas album is one of the biggest if not the biggest sellers in history. Props to MC for conquering the mainstream and Christmas!!!!!

realness! Fri, Dec 26, 2008 at 03:01 AM EST

MARIAH. DUH. Christina aint nobody Destiny's Child's Xmas album is more iconic than her's!

Kent Fri, Dec 26, 2008 at 02:48 AM EST

I'm not a fan of either, but Mariah wins this one - hands down.

greekmenrule Fri, Dec 26, 2008 at 02:07 AM EST

Mariah is an Icon and 'All I Want For Christmas Is You' is, W/Out a doubt, one of the only modern classics to be widely regarded as having a permanent place in the holiday/seasonal canon; Christina on the other hand, though extremely talented, pales in comparison to Mariah.

ben Fri, Dec 26, 2008 at 12:56 AM EST

Um, Xtina is lip-synching

Susan Fri, Dec 26, 2008 at 12:06 AM EST

Mariah's is happy and more than ten years later, I think truly a classic. Christina's Christmas Time is too much. It'll never be a classic because it can only appeal to one group of people. Those in love with pop trash blended with bad rap interludes. I love Christina but Mariah's song wins hands down.

Fatima Thu, Dec 25, 2008 at 11:42 PM EST

Serious? Comparing 4 minutes of overproduced early 00s R&B dreck to one of the most joy inducing songs of all time? No thanx plz.

AliB Thu, Dec 25, 2008 at 11:32 PM EST

Wow i actually thought that the Christina song would be worth a listen, but its awful. Not fun at all. Was this before she went dirty? She could probably make a better track now. Mariah wins it in my opinion.

e4ia Thu, Dec 25, 2008 at 11:25 PM EST

I remember when EW reviewed Mariah's Christmas album in 1994 and gave it a bad grade, saying that "All I Want for Christmas is You" failed as a Christmas song because it was too difficult to sing along with. Now it is considered a classic. HA!

Kathy B Thu, Dec 25, 2008 at 11:10 PM EST

You gotta be kidding me? Comparing Mariah & Christina is like comparing Britney to Madonna except Mariah & Christina can sing. Anyway Mariah's All I want for Christmas (Which she wrote), is a modern day classic can't nobody touch her.

Barbie Doll Thu, Dec 25, 2008 at 10:47 PM EST

Mariah Carey will always be the best. Christina is not even in the same league.

MsDaisy Thu, Dec 25, 2008 at 07:29 PM EST

For true perfection, check out the Popwatch about Judy Garland's performance of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" from "Meet Me in St Louis". These 2 divas are not even close to being in Judy's league.

wakeforce Thu, Dec 25, 2008 at 07:13 PM EST

I'd have to give it to Christina, based just on the performances above. She still can hit notes, Mariah used to. I personally wouldn't buy either of their albums, though. You only listen to xmas albums once a year. Save your money!

Jay Thu, Dec 25, 2008 at 06:41 PM EST

You gotta be kidding me. Mariah is far, far, far better.

No more Mariah Thu, Dec 25, 2008 at 05:08 PM EST

Christina is far better. She has a more sultry voice and persona.

I am truly sick of Mariah's poor old me victim songs and potty attitude. To me almost all of Mariah’s albums are the same. Her Christmas album sounds so sappy.

Char. Rose Thu, Dec 25, 2008 at 04:38 PM EST

I love both Divas.
Mariah's album is a timeless classic.
Around 2000, Christina's voice wasn't as nurtured as it is now. She didn't really know how to control it...So...
I think Mariah won this contest hands down. I LOVE CHRISTINA AND MARIAH!

P.S. is that seriously Lil Bow Wow? lol

dennis Thu, Dec 25, 2008 at 04:33 PM EST

both are great singers. mariahs xmas cd is amazing.christina is also great but she did oversing in her xmas cd.

Melanie Thu, Dec 25, 2008 at 03:55 PM EST

Christina is amazing.

Allan S. Thu, Dec 25, 2008 at 03:45 PM EST

Both great singers but Mariahs's Merry Christmas CD is a classic! No one can touch her! SERIOUSLY!

Danny Thu, Dec 25, 2008 at 03:02 PM EST

Christina's CD is pretty rough on the ears, and this is coming from a fan. It just oozes poor singing technique. Listen to her "Oh Holy Night," she sings "In sin and error pwwaaiiiiining"...she has to slide up to the vowel, which makes it fairly...laughable, unfortunately. She truly has a rare gift of a voice, I just wish she knew how to use it better.
Mariah captures the commercialism and overzealousness of Christmas pretty well in her CD. "All I Want for Xmas" is a new holiday standard, and her Oh Holy Night may have vocal gymnastics, but it's on such a grand and awe-inspiring scale that she pulls it off in a way Christina's trill-every-note-to-death renditions simply can't.

josher Thu, Dec 25, 2008 at 01:42 PM EST

Apparently live-in-concert means lip-synching-in-concert. So sad all these young "divas" never learned how to sing in public.

The best diva album has been and always will be Barbra Streisand's, A Christmas Album.

Ben Thu, Dec 25, 2008 at 01:17 PM EST

Ashanti and Jessica are not divas. Divas require talent. Mariah has talent, but I can't stand her album. At the same time, thanks to her, we have Christina's opus of oversinging... I'm torn.

b0bbyr0we Thu, Dec 25, 2008 at 12:00 PM EST

Christina's Christmas album was just gross. Slick, oversung, and gross. She's talented, but that album really was the climax of her over singing before she began to pull it back.

Mariah's, on the other hand, is holiday perfection. Every song is an original interpretation without trying to obviously to be modern. The choirs are incredible. Her voice is incredible. I give myself a week in July where I secretly listen to nothing but that album on my iPod.

I wanna give it to Xtina, but that song is far too ludicrous - and far too ludicrously sung - even to shower it with ironic love.

susan Thu, Dec 25, 2008 at 11:00 AM EST

Christina has it all over Mariah.

Miguel.Chile Thu, Dec 25, 2008 at 10:18 AM EST

CHRISTINA CHRISTINA CHRISTINA!

joshua Thu, Dec 25, 2008 at 09:56 AM EST

Josh Groban is the best Christmas song diva!

Marty Thu, Dec 25, 2008 at 09:43 AM EST

Sorry, Tanner. The only diva who can possibly beat Mariah Carey on Christmas is Darlene Love. Admittedly it's close, but "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)," when sung by Darlene Love, is the best Christmas song. Ever.
