'Idolatry' returns January 16!

Dec 21, 2008, 03:10 PM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: 'American Idol', Idolatry

To paraphrase the young and talented Jordin Sparks, "This is our now." By "this," of course, I refer to American Idol season, which kicks off January 13 on Fox, and will continue till you have turned into a speed-dialing, sleep-deprived, squealing fangirl/boy or till you can't take another second of hearing about the exploits of Simon, Paula, Randy, and a bunch of currently anonymous singing hopefuls. As for the "our," that'd be yours truly, as well as my delightfully twisted, opinionated, earnest, and witty co-hosts. I could list 'em all in alphabetical order, but wouldn't it be more fun to check out their shining-est moments in this all-new trailer for season 3 of Idolatry? Wait! Don't answer that! Just press play, then share your excitement level (or lack thereof) regarding season 8 of Idol in the comments section below.

That was possibly the cutest promo for anything ever. I cannot wait for the sarcastic and (most of the time) accurate stylings of Mr. Slezak and his Merry Band of Idol Lovers.

Sara Sun, Dec 28, 2008 at 08:54 PM EST

Oh, Idolatry...I've missed you so! Can't wait!

Another Suzanne Sun, Dec 28, 2008 at 04:12 PM EST

yay!! Only a month. Can't wait. (But EW--pls be kind to minors. They are kids, after all.)

kat hayes Sun, Dec 28, 2008 at 03:36 PM EST

Michael Slezak and Idolatry are back. Bring it! I just hope the new judge is ready because my long knives are already out. Nobody puts Paula in a corner.

Jae Wed, Dec 24, 2008 at 09:10 AM EST

Yay! That video is hilarious! I am redy for my Idolatry and Michael S! Last year was such a fun year. Your video reminds me.:D

shar Tue, Dec 23, 2008 at 12:44 AM EST

Yay, Idolatry! Bring it on, Slezak!

Moi Mon, Dec 22, 2008 at 11:13 PM EST

Two Words: Michael Johns.

M5 Mon, Dec 22, 2008 at 08:56 PM EST

I'm also one of the fans that love Idolatry more than Idol itself. I know that I'm not going to get very involve in Idol this year as every other year (except for last year David Cook did the almost impossible task of keep my interest on the show) but I know for sure that I'm going to be watching Idolatry every week.

Suzanne Mon, Dec 22, 2008 at 04:32 PM EST

I had never watched Idol before last season (save for watching the season 5 auditions and picking Hicks as the winner), and for some reason really got into it last year, and Idolatry made that strange fascination far better.

I'm hoping for : a comparison of the brothers Castro on Idolatry this year, some more gospel hand (with or without Mariah, this is still awesome), and for Slezak to sing (oh dude, just do it). And maybe not so many gratuitous Carly flashbacks, love her as I do, that got old.

Kath Mon, Dec 22, 2008 at 04:27 PM EST

Slezak, your columns are the highlight of my week. I hope that didn't sound creepy.

But where is the Kara love?! I know it's a bit quick to be all "TEAM KARA" before even seeing her as a judge, but... team Kara!

Seriously, people, go listen to the stuff by Platinum Weird (her project with Dave Stewart from the Eurythmics.) Quality stuff. And if the spoilers are to be believed, I hear she is awesome as a judge.

EP "I love Idolatry" Sato Mon, Dec 22, 2008 at 01:29 PM EST

As many here have noted, I enjoy Idolatry more than I enjoy Idol! And to me, Idol is one of the most fun shows to watch out there. Yes, it's cheesy and I don't care.

Bring on the losers! Bring on the snappy commentary! And later in the game, bring on the talented contestants waiting to make their dream come true! This show is awesome, the fans help make it a sensation, and I'll be there rooting along.

As for Idolatry, Slezak and Annie B. should be earning fat X-mas bonuses for their hard work on the show. Aside from Popwatch, it's one of the few things that keeps me resubscribing to EW every year!

suebrody Mon, Dec 22, 2008 at 11:13 AM EST

OMG. Michael, I cannot wait. While I will not have David Cook and Michael Johns to swoon over (not that I listen to Cook's CD every day...*coughofcoursenotcough*), I'll look forward to your reviews with baited breath, strong contestants or not. Happy holidays, and I'll save up all of your strength for the best moments on the net. Contestants? Who needs contestants when we've got Slezak?! Booyah!!!

NineDaves Mon, Dec 22, 2008 at 10:07 AM EST

it's a christmas miracle!

coo Mon, Dec 22, 2008 at 09:31 AM EST

Dear Michael I'm soooo ready!!! Can't wait to read your columns!!!!
Merry Xmas

Broadway Baby Mon, Dec 22, 2008 at 07:49 AM EST

Santa, please get me an American Idol advent calendar for Christmas. And the Michael Slezak and Mandi Bierly talking action figures. Thank you.

suszalwaze Mon, Dec 22, 2008 at 02:25 AM EST

i'm going to keep coming back to this page to look at jason's beautiful face:-) oh, yes. did i mention he's talented, too?

bruno Mon, Dec 22, 2008 at 02:16 AM EST

slezak, always look forward to it...
idol this year though, not so much...

Clay Atlas Mon, Dec 22, 2008 at 01:48 AM EST

Oh boy. What is the great appeal of this show anyhow?

Kristy Lee's Horse Sun, Dec 21, 2008 at 09:24 PM EST

I can't wait. I have been bored since I stopped watching this season's BORING DWTS. My snark is waiting to be umleashed. Let me predict. Randy will continue to say nothing (aight dawg, yeah), Paula will continue to be unintelligible (yeah Paula), Simon will be right on, and the new lady will think she has something important to say. I am really only watching to see if Paula lasts the season:).

Katie Sun, Dec 21, 2008 at 08:54 PM EST

CAN'T WAIT!!!!!

RubyBaby Sun, Dec 21, 2008 at 08:31 PM EST

As much as I applaud the return of Idolatry (will anything, anything at all, beat the "baby veal" comment from Kristen last season? We wait with bated breath), me wants my ANTD.

I'm with Ms daisyj...where the heck in hell is our ANTD finale????? You promised us...

Then again, if the finale is half as good as the Idolatry clip with Jessica Shaw leaping out of her bar chair to do, I don't know what with David Cook, all will be forgiven.

Al Sun, Dec 21, 2008 at 07:19 PM EST

Yawn.

musicfan5 Sun, Dec 21, 2008 at 06:51 PM EST

Excited about the return of Idolatry. As for AI Season 8--meh.

Tiffany Sun, Dec 21, 2008 at 06:19 PM EST

Less than a month to go. Forget MTV, I need my idol and idolatry!!! I can't believe I have lasted a whole 6 months now. It's almost over!

Paulo Sun, Dec 21, 2008 at 04:53 PM EST

I can hardly wait for Idol (and Idolatry). It's lame, and tacky as hell, I know. But i can't help it. I love it. I'm in Brazil, so i get to watch the episodes a week AFTER Michael posts his comments, which makes them a part of the whole package. Guilty pleasure!

Liza Sun, Dec 21, 2008 at 03:21 PM EST

Count me as an Idolatry lover who'll watch the commentary but not the show. My David Cook fan-dom is still in full force; don't have the time or interest in the show right now tho. Go David Cook! and go Slezak and Co.

Looking forward, but... Sun, Dec 21, 2008 at 02:27 PM EST

It's a bad sign for the videos that they've already stooped to using clips of Japanese monster movies. So let's nip this one early. You overdo that stuff. A few seconds, fine. A minute or longer, boooorrrrring.

Slezak fan Sun, Dec 21, 2008 at 12:59 PM EST

Very happy to see this. EW's Idol coverage, and the Idolatry interviews, was awesome during Season 7. I look forward to more entertainment in Season 8.

As for Idol itself, I hope that I'm not nearly as big a fan of anyone next year as I became of David Cook. Much easier to enjoy AI as "just a show" when you like but don't love any of the contestants.

A David Cook Fan for Life! Sun, Dec 21, 2008 at 11:54 AM EST

I will give this year a shot, but I can't imagine anything or anyone topping the Davids' and the excitement that these two created. The odds of that happening two years in a row is slim to none. Their talent was and is exceptional.

Amber Sun, Dec 21, 2008 at 11:42 AM EST

Thank God Slezak! You and AI of course were greatly missed! Can't wait!

LizetM Sun, Dec 21, 2008 at 03:57 AM EST

I can't wait. God knows I should stay away from his upcoming season, but idolatry is too much fun to pass.

Bear Sun, Dec 21, 2008 at 01:23 AM EST

Sorry, but I'm just wondering what is the point of never watching Idol again just because you found a singer you really love? Shouldn't that be your draw to come back and find someone else who may rock you as hard? There have been three singers in the history of AI who I have been just GAGA over, and if I'd stopped watching after the first one, look what I'd be missing. So, anyway, I was just wondering about the shoddy logic...

Carol Sun, Dec 21, 2008 at 12:43 AM EST

Love your default picture. Jason Castro will always be my Idol. So unique and refreshing. No one sounds like Jason. Have you heard Jason's White Christmas? It is free on Amazon. His Christmas gift to his fans.

Jessica S. Sun, Dec 21, 2008 at 12:25 AM EST

I'm far more excited about the return of Idolatry than I am about Idol itself. There will never be another contestant that moves me like David Cook did so I have no plans to watch the show ever again.

Unless Cookie is pimping a new single-then I will be right in front of the tv:)

mrclean Sun, Dec 21, 2008 at 12:03 AM EST

i may love 'idolatry' more than the actual show. why is that??

Ugly Jenny Sat, Dec 20, 2008 at 11:31 PM EST

Slezak, thank you so much for Idolatry! I look forward to watching it after every show because you speak the American Idol truth (Carly Smithson should have stayed longer, why wasn't there any love for Syesha, MICHAEL JOHNS, Archuleta as a baby veal). Plus I love your song picks for the contestants on theme night! Hey Mandi, you my girl!

IHeartSlezak(and Mandi) Sat, Dec 20, 2008 at 10:15 PM EST

I'm more excited for Idolatry than Idol too. I'm not sure how I'm going to work up enough time/energy to fangirl the new crew when, 6 months after Idol, my David Cook devotion is still a full time thing.

Jasmine Sat, Dec 20, 2008 at 09:52 PM EST

Can't wait.

smallseal Sat, Dec 20, 2008 at 09:41 PM EST

yay!!! so happy Idolatry is back. I love it more than the actual show. And this year I live in the US so I can actually vote!!!

Hanna Sat, Dec 20, 2008 at 09:32 PM EST

I have no plans to watch AI next season. Jason Castro is my Idol and always will be. No one will ever match him. So stop trying to suck me in. Stop, I tell ya!! I mean it!! STOP!! ;)

CVisca29 Sat, Dec 20, 2008 at 08:35 PM EST

I've actually been waiting for your trailer... so I think I have to say I'm more excited for Idolatry than AI this year. Unless there's some singer I can root for like DCook last year...

Elizabeth Sat, Dec 20, 2008 at 08:19 PM EST

A reason to go to work... thanks Slezak & Crew.

Dwight Schrute Sat, Dec 20, 2008 at 08:02 PM EST

Is the gaylord still doing it?

arryana Sat, Dec 20, 2008 at 08:01 PM EST

two things i'm looking forward to in '09 inauguration day and idolatry!!! loved the idolatry trailer, thanks for the early xmas present, slezak!

palais Sat, Dec 20, 2008 at 07:50 PM EST

Slezak, dude, you know I'll be there with bells on, and this year, I promise to behave.
Idolatry is better than the freakin' show most weeks.

daisyj Sat, Dec 20, 2008 at 06:53 PM EST

Though Top Doll does now rule in my affections (that is, when we actually get some new EPISODES) (ahem), I too am far more excited about January now that I have seen this.

Lauren Sat, Dec 20, 2008 at 06:39 PM EST

Yes!!! Slezak is back! Dont know if this year will be as good without my David Cook obsession, but at least Idolatry will keep me happy!

Stephanie Sat, Dec 20, 2008 at 06:15 PM EST

YAY!!!!!! There's nothing better than Idolatry!! Although I do love Jim's blog on MTV as well. :) Bring on Season 110 of AI!

sophieb Sat, Dec 20, 2008 at 04:20 PM EST

Wicked! I only watched AI last year as a compliment to Idolatry. Love it love it love it!

Little Z Sat, Dec 20, 2008 at 03:51 PM EST

I enjoy Slezak's AI commentary as much as the show! I always look forward to reading his TV Watches and PW blog posts as soon as I arrive at work. Keep up the awesome work!

Elizabeth Sat, Dec 20, 2008 at 03:45 PM EST

Thank GOD. Idolatry was more fun than the actual show last season, and I have been so worried ever since the Jeff Probst videos were cut from EW, and with the whole publishing industry in a downturn. Thank you, EW! Thank you for keeping the brilliant, funny, groundbreaking Idolatry!

collins Sat, Dec 20, 2008 at 03:40 PM EST

for the first time in my commenting life, here it is for all america to see. the noise of AI fangirls everywhere...

SSSSQQQQQUUUUUEEEEEEEEEEE!

i am so excited i can barely contain myself. in the immortal words of dawn denbo from season 5 of the l word: "it's on!" bring the snark, slezak!

Jen Sat, Dec 20, 2008 at 03:36 PM EST

I'm more excited for Idolatry than I am for AI8. David Cook broke the show for me. There is no other Idol (except Slezak).

Kate Sat, Dec 20, 2008 at 03:22 PM EST

I'm not excited for American Idol, just for Idolatry. Michael Slezak for the win \0/

kayethx Sat, Dec 20, 2008 at 03:02 PM EST

Seriously, I am so excited. I.am.lame. Luckily there are other good people here that are as epically lame as I.
