Coldplay's streaming NYC concert: On the Scene

"We haven't sold many f---ing tickets, have we?" mused Chris Martin from a New York City stage several weeks back. If that sounds like an odd thing for the lead singer of one of the biggest bands in the world to say, I should mention that this particular Coldplay concert was an intentionally cozy affair, put on for just 300 fans at the Hammerstein Ballroom. Oh, Chris, you jokester! The performance was being taped as part of the "Nissan Live Sets on Yahoo! Music" web series, which led Martin to go on: "Can you say 'f---' on Yahoo!?" Coldplay's full performance will be streaming over at Yahoo! a little later today, at which point we may learn the answer to that important question. We'll also find out whether or not Yahoo! chooses to broadcast Martin's next stream-of-consciousness remark: "We would have sold more tickets, but Joe the Plumber is doing a show down the street." (What, like you didn't make any "Joe the Plumber" jokes back in late October?)

In the meantime, you can check out two sweet clips from the show below. First, Coldplay gives the people what they want with "Viva La Vida." And after the jump, the band members answer an audience member's questions about fame, food, and more. Sadly, none of Martin's wry patter is in evidence in these clips, but believe me, it was a fun night all around. Coldplay fans, how much do you wish you were there? Or were any of you among the lucky 300?

I don't know about that Louise. I don't see any uniformity to their clothes of the past. Definitely a preference for black or dark colored clothing but other than that I see a similarity between what they all wear in a passing sense. Like they all shop in the same kinds of places or one started buying a certain kind of style and the others liked it. Which you see in most bands. But from what I can see with a search on Google Images, there doesn't seem to be a strict adherence to a uniform during the past releases. I could be wrong, if you have any other pics, please do share.

Thanks Bostonbean for trying to help me, but they've been wearing matching outfits since their outset. They use to wear matching black Nehru collar jackets. I didn't understand it then either. Can anybody else help?

Like Coldplay the recording band, but Coldplay live always seems like the lead singer is out of breathe and/or off key.

bostonbean Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 10:52 AM EST

The matching outfits are part of this year's album marketing I think. Coldplay has certainly become a more commercial/mainstream brand which comes with the marketing shenanigans. I don't believe they've done this before Viva La Vida though. But probably because this is such a concept album, they made that a part of it. I just find it strange they keep wearing the same thing over and over again. When can they stop? As much as I loved Viva La Vida, I hope their next album takes them back to their Parachutes roots, a more low key venture.

I LOVE Coldplay. People who attended that event are so lucky! I hope they will come here in our country (somewhere in Asia) for a concert! If they will, I'd immediately get front row tickets! How I wish. Sigh.

Chris Martin seems like a B of D.

I've asked this before but have yet to get an answer. I'm hoping somebody more interested in Coldplay than I am can help: Why do they wear matching outfits? I'm serious. I think I could maybe enjoy their music more if I understood the matching outfits.
