Which movie character lives the life you want?

Dec 12, 2008, 03:50 PM | by Marc Bernardin

Categories: Apropos of Nothing, Film, I'm Just a Geek, Ninjas

Thomascrownbrosnan_l Ever watch a movie and think to yourself, "Man, that's a nice life this character's living. I wouldn't mind a piece of that"? It used to manifest itself in real-estate envy — I always wanted Connor MacLeod's sprawling SoHo loft (complete with mini-weapons museum) from 1984's Highlander. But I was watching Pierce Brosnan's The Thomas Crown Affair over the weekend and found myself saying, "Hey, that Thomas Crown's got it made. Super-rich, with disposable catamarans and Caribbean pleasure compounds and private jets and Manhattan mansions — complete with a manservant — plus he gets to frolic with Rene Russo. And, to top it off, THE DUDE IS A MASTER THIEF. How cool is that?"

What character has a life that you'd like to slip into, even for just a little while?

luxury watch Wed, Apr 22, 2009 at 09:48 PM EST

It's good! rolex watch?
luxury watch?

monica Mon, Dec 22, 2008 at 01:15 PM EST

i don't know about a movie, but Ugly Betty's life isn't half bad: Funny friends, great family, nice job, and her own apartment.

Buef Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 12:16 AM EST

Navin R Johnson - The Jerk

Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 09:35 PM EST

Baby from Dirty Dancing or Haley James Scott from One Tree Hill. The reasons are obvious - hot male leads to co-star with. could a girl wish for anything more? I think not.

Jenna Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 02:26 PM EST

Penny Lane (Lady Goodman AKA Kate Hudson's character) from Almost Famous. I love that movie and to be in that time traveling around with Rock stars and inspiring awesome music would rule! Plus in the end she goes to Morocco!

Eric Friedmann Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 12:48 PM EST

Mark Whalberg in ROCK STAR - 80's heavy metal music and lots and lots of P*SSY!

April Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 10:22 AM EST

It's between Carrie/Sex and the City and Kate Winslet's character and Kate Beckinsale's character in Serendipity only because of the way it ends.

Ahhhh to dream...

GeeMoney Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 10:13 AM EST

I would totally covet Lara Croft's life. All of that money plus all of that adventure sounds like the most fabulous life ever!

NineDaves Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 10:10 AM EST

i would do anything to have diane keaton's hamptons house in something's gotta give. have you seen that place? it looks like paradise.

forreal Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 11:36 PM EST

clarissa from clarissa explains it all. minus the ferg.

Sara Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 10:22 PM EST

It used to be Rachel on Friends--she has a great job in "fashion", lives in NYC in the same apartment complex as her 5 best friends (who are always awesome). Plus Ross!!!

Then came Carrie Bradshaw, who obviously beats out Rachel. Just fabulous. Minus Big (ew).

Elizabeth Hann Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 10:03 PM EST

If I could be anyone from a movie, I'd be Jude Quinn from 'I'm Not There.' Even though it seemed like he hated his life, I kind of envied him - he was a poet AND a rock star. Plus, I'd love any excuse to be interviewed - not to mention, an excuse to mouth off at interviewers asking me stupid questions

Lisi Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 08:07 PM EST

Liz Lemon from 30 Rock. She's a successful writer in comedy TV who's mentor runs in a powerful crowd and can grant her anything she wants, but she doesn't want it. That's power and I want that.

Jane Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 07:59 PM EST

Zoe from Firefly. She gets to be the stoic comic relief to Capt. Mal and she's not afraid of anything.

leedawg Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 07:19 PM EST

Willy Wonka! We are the music makers, we are the dreamers of dreams...

Sheridan Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 06:05 PM EST

Norah from Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist. She gets to travel into the city anytime she wants, listen to awesome bands by gliding past lines at all the hot clubs, is beautiful and funny, oh and she also gets to meet her soulmate as a seventeen year old. Jealous much?

Gemma Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 05:36 PM EST

The Doctor...any regeneration.
Eowyn from Lord of the Rings
Han Solo
James Bond
Jean Grey (from X Men)
Belle from Disney's Beauty and the Beast (I would have married the Beast the moment I met him for that library)

Celimene Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 04:29 PM EST

I'd love to be the Dude, but as I'm female I think I'd have to go with Maude Lebowski. The fabulous fur coat, the money, the art career, the pretentious eurotrash sychophants and raising a little Lebowski - really, I see no downside. Also, being a redhead would be a bonus.

Bob Stout Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 02:57 PM EST

John Sheridan from Babylon 5. President of the interstellar alliance with the power to make a difference, plus he's married to Delenn.

Shorty Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 02:27 PM EST

I would probably pick Baby from "Dirty Dancing." I love dancing and I wish I had time to take lessons. And of course, it doesn't hurt Patrick Swayze is hopelessly in love with her in that movie. I'd have hungry eyes indeed, lol!

Liz Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 02:04 PM EST

Ferris Bueller. There is no other answer. If you were Ferris, you would have(or could get) all of the things listed in the other answers.

Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 02:02 PM EST

Totally somebody rich and awesomely amazingly cool who has an awesome home and cool friends and a good family and stuff..

maya Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 01:50 PM EST

Holly Golightly (of course)
Carrie from sex in the city.
Lorelei Lee- gentlemen prefer blondes
Neo in the matrix
Victoria- twilight (don't mind that i die later, james/cam gigandet is hot!)

Nya Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 01:41 PM EST

Blair Waldorf (rich, pretty, and Chuck!)
Bella (Edward and Jacob, enough said)
Fiona from Burn Notice, being a female spy sounds cool.
Buffy Summers( because she’s a hot chick with superpowers. Plus she gets both Angel and Spike, and I wouldn’t mind a little Riley)

And if I were a guy I would definitely want to emulate either Captain Jake Harkness from Torchwood or Christian Troy from Nip/Tuck because ones a hot doctor and the other gets to save the world on a weekly basis.

Christa Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 01:33 PM EST

Bella Swan, simply because she is the luckiest girl alive. She gets a hot, caring boyfriend, loving family that doesn't hover, and she's absolutely beautiful!

Don't forget about Lestat de Lioncort from the Vampire Chronicles books and movies. He's such a bad ass!

Kari Perry Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 01:32 PM EST

Laura Croft. You have every possible luxury vehicle on earth at your disposal, a fabulous house, a royal title AND you get to go on fabulous adventures all while looking hot! Who WOULDN'T want that?

Michelle Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 01:19 PM EST

Okay, to add to my earlier post, yes Pam Beesly and Lindsay Weir! The post a people below me made a very good point- she's so smart, has a good group of friends, and ditched college to be a deadhead- that takes guts!

BackstrokingFly Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 01:19 PM EST

Clark Griswold. Oh to be an adult who still feels optimistic about Christmas.

Cameron Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 01:10 PM EST

Tony Stark, Iron Man.
This isn't even a contest! He gets Gwyneth Paltrow, the fame, the fortune, the superhero status?!
And, come on, Gwyneth Paltrow for God's sake.

Mr. Big Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 12:53 PM EST

Derek from "American History X" - no contest. The guy gets away with murder, and then once he's out of jail, life is like easy street. Unless I missed something near the end, this guy has it pretty sweet.

elin Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 12:52 PM EST

I would have wanted to be Becca from Life Goes On. She got Tyler Benchfield and Jesse!!

Oscar Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 12:38 PM EST

Scrap Tom Ripley from Dickie's Greenleaf's life in the Talented Mr. Ripley and you have the most glamorous life in the world. I would totally be Dixie: Piloting a boat named Bird around the Italian country side and lounging around the Meditaranian with Gwenith Paltro doesn't sound like such a bad life to me.

Walt Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 12:31 PM EST

Tony Stark. No question. I-AM-IRON MAN!!!

Emma Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 12:04 PM EST

Angela Chase- She gets to make-out with Jordan Catalano, be best friends with Rayanne and Ricky, and have a next door neighbour who's obsessed with her. Already it sounds way better than my actual life. Seriously.

Jul Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 11:29 AM EST

Cher from Clueless. Her life is full of these way existential things. Awesome friends, a cool dad, cute boys and a wardrobe full of 90s clothes.

Francesca Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 11:29 AM EST

Movie: i would want to be Kat in "10 Things I Hate About You" ....having Heath Ledger sing "Can't take my eyes off you" while dancing on the bleachers would have been the single greatest moment of my entire life...gosh, everything about that man was beautiful! Every time i watch that scene, it makes me cry. RIP Heath Ledger!

TV: Lindsay Weir from Freaks and Geeks! Besides the fact that it is my fav show of ALL TIME, I think life would be amazing if I could date Jason Segel and be best friends with James Franco and Seth Rogan! she is intelligent, beautiful and has a great family....why wouldn't I want to be Lindsay Weir!?!

gomergirl Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 11:27 AM EST

Oh yeah, and the guys..... yummy! Gerard Butler and Daniel Craig.

gomergirl Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 11:25 AM EST

I would live to step into the shoes of Lara Croft. She has it all, the cars, the weapons, the bod and the adventures. That is the life for me!

Rhonda Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 11:24 AM EST

Any Jane Austen heroine- Elizabeth Bennet in Pride and Prejudice or Emma Woodhouse in Emma. Witty dialogue, strength of character, and a happy ending, not to mention all those cute empire-waist dresses!

Colleen Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 10:28 AM EST

Belle from Beauty and the Beast. I like spunky women who live by their own rules! Plus Belle gets to be a princess...sigh....

RYAN JAMES NEUFELD Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 10:24 AM EST

BOND...

JAMES BOND!

ROGER MOORE IS THE GREATEST...AND...PIERCE BROSNAN IS OF MY GENERATION!

Ann Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 10:01 AM EST

Giselle from Enchanted, Tracy Turnblad from Hairspray, Gabriella from High School Musical ... basically what I'm saying is I'd like to burst out into song in public.

Brady Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 09:59 AM EST

Benjamin Braddock from THE GRADUATE. Lying around the swimming pool all day then meeting Anne Bancroft as night. Who wouldn't want that?

Michele Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 09:55 AM EST

Mame Dennis from Auntie Mame hands down.

Lucy Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 09:49 AM EST

Hermione Granger
Bella Swan
Lucy Pevensie
Monica Gellar

Jessica S. Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 09:36 AM EST

Lorelei Gilmore
Buffy Summers
Holly Golightly
Bella Swan
Pam Beesley
Mrs. Smith
Cher Horowitz

~Mostly for their clothes, husbands/boyfriends/fiances, and sense of humor.

And if I could be anyone of the opposite sex, it would be James Bond or Han Solo. No doubt in my mind.

Smith Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 09:27 AM EST

Sam Witwicky. The last scene of Transformers shows it all. Caught between Meghan Fox and the 09 Camaro. Who wouldn't want that?

cindy Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 09:26 AM EST

Donna Noble(well, except for the last 8 minutes of Journey's end),I'd love to travel through time and space with David Tennant!

boo Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 09:11 AM EST

siringe - seriously? Peyton has had a pretty crap life - her 2 mums died, her dad is god knows where and she got attacked countless times

mine's got to be Pam (The Office) or Rachel (Friends)

Gustavo Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 09:10 AM EST

Tom Hanks's in "Big": all the good trappings of gown up, flush Manhattan life, none of the neuroses.
And that loft!
I wouldn't mind Thomas Crown's either...

Ritch Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 08:03 AM EST

William Miller from "Almost Famous". To step in his shoes and live close to those who created arguably some of the best music of the 20th century is definitely my idea of an amazing day.

Donna Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 07:15 AM EST

Barbra Streisand in the Way We Were, hey I'm willing to get my heartbroken by young, hot Robert Redford if it means I get him at all. lol.

vanessa Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 06:49 AM EST

uhm i have a few options: bella swan from twilight for obvious reasons, claudia from interview with th e vampire to be with louis and lestat just a few, arwen would be awesome too! but lately and definitely i like bella jajaja....

Nkdubya Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 05:45 AM EST

For me its a toss-up, Pierce Brosnan in Thomas Crown affair is awesome but he still has responsibility as far as his business pursuits, but if I had to choose it would be Brosnan again in After the Sunset, Extremely Wealthy living in the Bahamas and the only time he needs to work he uses amazing technology and know-how to steal diamonds then at the end of the day he goes home to Salma Hayek and that sweet Navy Blue 68 Camaro Convertible on his beachfront house in the Bahamas

123 Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 04:01 AM EST

BELLA SWAN!!! who wouldn't want to cosy up to a gorgeous vampire Edward Cullen???? I'm in heaven! <3

zooey Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 03:53 AM EST

Amelie. So sweet, simple and whimsical.

Ben Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 03:52 AM EST

James Franco as Saul in Pineapple Express.
It was said best by Dale (Seth Rogan):
"You do have the best job... You smoke all day."

Christin Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 02:19 AM EST

I always wanted to be Kelly LeBrock in Weird Science

Jennifer Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 01:44 AM EST

Giselle from Enchanted. She's a princess, for crying out loud! She also can sing like a bird, is stunningly beautiful, wears gorgeous clothes and gets to sleep with Patrick Dempsey at the end.

MsDaisy Sat, Dec 13, 2008 at 10:39 PM EST

I want to be Rene Russo's character in "The Thomas Crown Affair".

Katie Sat, Dec 13, 2008 at 10:14 PM EST

-Lucy from a Room With a View: trapsing around the Italian and British countrysides - amazing!
-Judy Maxwell from What's Up Doc
-Nancy Drew

econruth Sat, Dec 13, 2008 at 09:57 PM EST

1. Sydney Ellen Wade (Annette Bening) in the American President. Smart, great short hair and you get to date the hot president, Michael Douglas.
2. Jodie Foster in Contact. Sure there's Matthew McConaughey but also good aliens, a hot dress to the party, space travel (sort of) and oh yeah.. Matthew McConaughey.

Michelle Sat, Dec 13, 2008 at 09:34 PM EST

PAM BEESLY.

Has a simple job and the PERFECT fiance, Jim Halpert. She is seriously so lucky.

pilot Sat, Dec 13, 2008 at 09:27 PM EST

Dexter Morgan
Angel
Spike
Tony Dinozzo
Bobby Drake/Iceman
Harry Potter
Ned/The Pie Maker

Peter Sat, Dec 13, 2008 at 09:12 PM EST

-be brother of Marcia and Jan Brady.
-Danny Zucco, from Vaseline.
-Jack, Lost.
-Brandon, 90210 (the old one)

envy Sat, Dec 13, 2008 at 08:51 PM EST

Diane Keaton's life from Something's Gotta Give. Gorgeous Hampton's beach house, hot young doctor in love with her, amazing career. Sigh...

siringe Sat, Dec 13, 2008 at 07:02 PM EST

Peyton Sawyer, she has her own record label and a gorgeous fiancee

Jen B Sat, Dec 13, 2008 at 05:59 PM EST

Rory from the Gilmore Girls. She leads a mostly charmed life, got to follow Barack Obama's campaign around, and I'd choose way better guys to fall in love with than she does.

calalily Sat, Dec 13, 2008 at 05:31 PM EST

Tony Stark, for all the gadgets. Top pick, though, is Beatrice in Much Ado About Nothing. Sitting around in Italy all day, eating grapes, flirtily snarking, and getting in to wacky romantic hi-jinx? Sign me up.

jen Sat, Dec 13, 2008 at 04:44 PM EST

Diane Court, a few minues in the backseat with Lloyd Dobler? Yes, please.

Bill Sat, Dec 13, 2008 at 04:14 PM EST

Xander Harris, but without the whole thumb-in-the-eye part. Or maybe Bruce Wayne, if I could skip the whole Batman thing and just keep the teenage boys.

Jessica Sat, Dec 13, 2008 at 03:58 PM EST

The Doctor! Sure, his life can be hard at times, but who wouldn't want all of space and time out there for exploring? (Plus - feel like meeting Agatha Christie? Done!)

Sarah A Sat, Dec 13, 2008 at 03:50 PM EST

CATWOMAN.

She gets to crack the whip on Bruce Wayne/Batman. And if Batman is played by Christian Bale, even better.

Legally Brunette Sat, Dec 13, 2008 at 02:58 PM EST

Elle Woods for sure! She's so fabulous! And I figure, I've already got the top law school thing going on...but yeah, I'll never ever be anywhere near as fabulous as Elle Woods. And I'm not blonde and couldn't even pull off blonde if I wanted to, so I guess I'll have to settle being a Vivienne, lol. But it would be great to rock law school and all that pink at the same time (plus find a sweet TA to marry and have my own little Bruiser)! I think a small part of every female law student wants to be Elle Woods! ( =

And also, for a day, I'd like to be the Bride, simply because it would be awesome to be able to kick so much ascii with so much style. Ripley, too (and TV show Buffy).

Emma Sat, Dec 13, 2008 at 01:59 PM EST

Dean/Sam from Supernatural. Is that weird?

Renee Sat, Dec 13, 2008 at 01:56 PM EST

Carrie Bradshaw. definately.

Lisa Sat, Dec 13, 2008 at 01:06 PM EST

Who wouldn't want to be James Bond? Exotic locales, and you get to kick butt!!

agent227 Sat, Dec 13, 2008 at 01:05 PM EST

It's a two-way tie for me. Bella in Twilight, for obvious reasons. Who wouldn't want to cozy up to Edward Cullen (or Robert Pattinson, for that matter)? And, of course, Cher Horowitz, of Clueless fame. The girl had it made, down to her credit cards and "loqued out jeep", and got to make out with Paul Rudd. Does it get any better?

Lila Grace Sat, Dec 13, 2008 at 12:53 PM EST

Definitely Kate Hudson's character from Almost Famous. I have a thing for rock and roll, plus he wardrobe in the movie was fantastic.

And I've always wanted to go to Morocco.

Lila Grace Sat, Dec 13, 2008 at 12:53 PM EST

Definitely Kate Hudson's character from Almost Famous. I have a thing for rock and roll, plus he wardrobe in the movie was fantastic.

And I've always wanted to go to Morocco.

Phil Sat, Dec 13, 2008 at 12:50 PM EST

Dirk Diggler! Not because of the obvious reason, but every time I watch Boogie Nights I feel like I should have lived in a simpler time when sex was safe, pleasure was business, and business was booming.

Desmo Sat, Dec 13, 2008 at 12:20 PM EST

Bernard Black from Black Books. Constantly drunk, constantly funny.

Gena Sat, Dec 13, 2008 at 12:17 PM EST

Hermione Granger simply so I can be close to Sirius Black. I wouldn't be Sirius because who wants to spend 13 years in jail?

John Sat, Dec 13, 2008 at 11:36 AM EST

Katherine Clifton in The English Patient-having Ralph Fiennes swoon over you like that...swoon.

Donna Sat, Dec 13, 2008 at 10:33 AM EST

After all these years, I still want to be Sam from Sixteen Candles. Two words: JAKE RYAN. I still heart him very much...

Sat, Dec 13, 2008 at 09:30 AM EST

Hermoine Granger-- Totally!

neil Sat, Dec 13, 2008 at 09:30 AM EST

My mother has seen The Lake House probably a few dozen times, and nearly every time she finishes the movie, she calls me up and says "I want a magic mailbox!" I think I'd want the house, but would probably invest in a post office box.

Summer Sat, Dec 13, 2008 at 07:31 AM EST

I'd slip into William Miller's life in Almost Famous anyday. A teenage reporter following his favorite band cross country, making friends, experiencing life, and getting back stage passes to every show? Sounds good to me.

Sat, Dec 13, 2008 at 05:08 AM EST

Charlie in Two and a half men

Raven_Moon Sat, Dec 13, 2008 at 04:36 AM EST

There are so many characters to choose from. Here are some of my faves:
- Hugh Grant's character in "About a Boy"--living a life of luxory. What must that be like?
- Hermione in "Harry Potter"---Magic!
- Mrs. Smith in "Mr. & Mrs. Smith"-beatiful, intelligent, kick-@ss chick married to Brad Pitt. Nice.
- Kate Winslet in "The Holiday"--Her English cottage is adorable, she gets to go to LA & spends time in a mansion-esque home stocked with DVD's & she falls in love! Lucky girl.
- Bella Swan in "Twilight." Ah, to be loved by Edward Cullen.

ElectAPromQueen (it didn't happen) Sat, Dec 13, 2008 at 03:35 AM EST

Halle Berry in Boomerang.

andy6 Sat, Dec 13, 2008 at 02:32 AM EST

There's one true character worth having a lifestyle that sticks out in a crowd: Luke Jackson from "Cool Hand Luke". He may have a 'failure to communicate' but he had a fun doing it. Either him or Jack Crabb from "Little Big Man". He lived quite an interesting life.

Karrah Sat, Dec 13, 2008 at 02:30 AM EST

I'd love to be any of the characters in Empire Records... Liv Tyler's character I guess. I just wanna work there!

Something's Gotta Give Sat, Dec 13, 2008 at 02:02 AM EST

I wouldn't want to sleep with Jack Nicholson (ick), but I would love to have Diane Keaton's beach house and writer life in Something's Gotta Give. When I watch that movie I find myself paying as much attention to the beautiful interiors as I do the action on screen.

Zach Sat, Dec 13, 2008 at 02:02 AM EST

INDIANA JONES
TONY MANERO
TONY MONTANA
MARTY McFLY
THE GENIE
ROGER RABBIT
LINK LARKIN from HAIRPSRAY
PETER WARNE from IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT
ELLEN RIPLEY
CLARICE STARLING
VELMA KELLY/BILLY FLYNN
HOLLY GOLIGHTLY/PAUL VARJAK from BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S
DIANA CHRISTENSEN from NETWORK
ALVY SINGER from ANNIE HALL
STANLEY KOWALSKI
MATILDA

Jen Sat, Dec 13, 2008 at 01:47 AM EST

I'd love to have the life of Holly Golightly from Breakfast at Tiffany's (minus the 'call girl'/mafia part), her kooky apartment, her FAB clothes, the cute guy that lives above her...And if that's not available, I'd love to take the life/home(s) of Susan Parrish from Meet Joe Black...and sadly, I'm sure there are people in this world who do live like that, but I don't know any of them...And this is a little off, but I loved the whole vibe of the Blue Crush movie with Kate Bosworth...living on the island, a mile from a point break and surfing every day and just living and grinding out a life. That's awesome to me. And the Notebook, hands down. That house...with Ryan Gosling in it...or the Family Stone. I have a thing for New England-type of homes, plus that family is nearly as nuts as mine...

Sat, Dec 13, 2008 at 01:02 AM EST

Cher Horowitz... To be forever 16 & in love with Paul Rudd. What more could a girl possibly want?

TP Sat, Dec 13, 2008 at 12:39 AM EST

THE JOKER!!!

to Un Francais a Hollywood Fri, Dec 12, 2008 at 11:57 PM EST

It's all a fantasy, we know we can never have these things or be these people, but think about it, why do people play certain video games?

Lauren Fri, Dec 12, 2008 at 11:33 PM EST

I would have to be Bella Swan...can you say "Edward Cullen?"
