Britney Spears on 'GMA': More popcorn!

Dec 2, 2008, 11:23 AM | by Annie Barrett

Categories: Britney Spears, Food and Drink, Morning Madness, PopWatch Dance Party

Good Morning America, a "news show," devoted practically its entire two hours this morning to a Big Apple Circus-based celebration of Britney Spears' 27th birthday. The leather (kind of)-clad ringmaster who knows just just wh-wh-what you are performed "Circus" and "Womanizer," the former of which is embedded below for your potential pleasure. I'm partial to the "spontaneous" tossing of popcorn at 1:39. And wait around for Hugh Jackman's awkward happy-birthday serenade via satellite, plus a glimpse of the dumbest person in history, who "sold her rent money" to see Britney "sing."

Oh and big announcement: She's going on tour! Y'all!

that popcorn thing was absolutely hilarious! haha
loved the performance

LB Wed, Dec 3, 2008 at 02:12 PM EST

To all the ppl saying "she just needs more time to get it right" "she's made a huge improvement in just a year," you're absolutely right; she has made big improvements. But guess what? If she can't perform up to parr with other heavy weight super star icons (which is what she was "before"), then she shouldn't be coming back yet. Period. She's the one that decided she was ready (or sadly most likely it was more her handlers that decided) and she knows that as far as being a performer goes, it's business and not personal. You have to have your A game. And btw, just getting back to how she performed "before" isn't enough. She has to step it up even from back then! It's called career momentum. You don't see other (successful) artists mimicking what they did 5 or 10 years ago. They move on and (try) to step it up each and every time. But I"m not w/o sympathy. I hope that on a personal level she is getting/has gotten better.

LB Wed, Dec 3, 2008 at 02:01 PM EST

If she had really sang the song instead of lip syncing I wouldn't have one bad thing to say about that performance. It was entertaining and visually stunning. But she didn't, and I do. Sing Britney! For crying out loud you're putting out an album! And if we are all supposed to give you a pass on actual singing (though we don't give a pass to any other singer anymore) then I expect a blow-me-away performance from you, not just from your back up dancers.

Preston Wed, Dec 3, 2008 at 01:25 PM EST

I liked Britney's performance on Good Morning America. But I was expecting a live band to perform right behind her and the dancers. Maybe she hasn't assembled a new band yet to perform the new songs. Her dancing and performing were solid. But to the people who are making negative comments, lighten up! She hasn't performed in over a year in front of thousands of people and it will take a few more performances to give you that "perfect" performance you wanted.

Jennifer Wed, Dec 3, 2008 at 12:08 PM EST

I love the way GMA kept saying Britney "live". There was nothing live about those performances.

Dennis N. Wed, Dec 3, 2008 at 11:17 AM EST

Dude, if you're gonna lip synch, OWN IT. Don't diligently adjust your plastic mic as if you need just the right angle to achieve new heights of vocal quality. I feel compelled to remind all to recall Beyonce's recent AMAs performance, in which she actually SANG actual NOTES from her CHEST and THROAT, not NOSE, and danced an extremely intricate and physically demanding routine that, in fact, did NOT involve a mid-song clothes-orgy. I'm insulted and annoyed.

toodles Wed, Dec 3, 2008 at 12:50 AM EST

we've got rihanna, beyonce, christina, alicia, MJB, madonna, ciara, mariah etc. until britney starts to actually perform again, she's still expendable....y'all.

Bk Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 11:01 PM EST

I just wanted to state that while I think Britney def. lip synched Circus, there were parts of womanizer that she was def singing, because you could hear her voice over the recording of womanizer. As far as dancing goes I agree she had an incredible oppurtunity during circus to just bust it out and blow people away and she didnt. but she looks and appears better, and is more confident and thats important. I think every performance she does can only get better. I think she should do at least 3 more big gigs before her tour starts. Like maybe Regis and Kelly, A New Years Program, and American Idol. I fully believe she'll get back to how she was just give her some time! Her New album is great by the way!

Eric Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 10:30 PM EST

Circus was definitely a better number than Womanizer. The dance steps aren't that great. Also, she hasn't really "performed" on a regular basis since her "In the Zone" album, so she's working on her confidence again. I think she'll blow people away once her tour starts.

Tawny Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 09:29 PM EST

Not much difference between this performance and the one at the VMAs last year except for may 20-25 pounds.

PRIS Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 07:59 PM EST

YOUR ALL SO ANNOYING WITH YOUR COMMENTS, SHES DOING GOOD AND LOOKIN GOOD. IM SO HAPPY FOR HER.... SO MANY SINGERS DONT SING ANYMORE LIVE AND IF THEY DO, ALOT OF THEM SUCK! THATS WHY THEIR CALLED PREFORMERS!!! AND SHE DOESNT HAVE TO EXPLAIN ALL DETAILS OF HER LIFE. SHE WAS SAD AND DEPRESSED, WHEN YOU FEEL LIKE THAT, DO YOU FEEL LIKE YOU HAVE TO EXPLAIN TO THE WORLD? LET HER BE.... AND IF YOU HAVE ONLY BAD COMMENTS THAN WHY THE F ARE U INTERESTED IN HER STUFF?

scott Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 06:17 PM EST

I LOVE HER ALWAYS! but i HATE with a PASSION the choroegrapher used for this mini promo tour!! HATE. BUT HAVE NO FEAR- WADE ROBSON IS DOING THE TOUR! they are the BEST team!!! welcome back britney!! AND wade!

fancypants Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 05:52 PM EST

she's lazy and thinks she's entitled to success w/o working for it. plus, it's kind of amazing how dim she is.

Julie Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 04:15 PM EST

I think that the tour should be much better than today. I heard she's about to start practicing the choreography routine for it. There's no doubt in my mind that the shows will be amazing. Plus, she'll be focused on touring and won't be distracted by outside factors.

Miss Sassy Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 04:05 PM EST

I can't stand Britney, but her performance reminds me of when Janet Jackson was hot in the '90s, aka 'If'. Some of the dance steps looked similar, tho. At least she looks good again. But Hugh, please don't do any more satellite singing, it's beneath you.

Debbie Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 03:57 PM EST

When will Britney ever sing LIVE again? All she does is lip-synch now. We shouldn't even call her a "singer" anymore. It's getting really pathetic.

Phil Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 03:34 PM EST

The "Circus" cd is hot, although, one ballad too many, IMO, but I do NOT think Britney has justifiably explained her reasoning behind her weird behavior the past year & a half. NOT LIKE SHE HAS TO! But I have kinda lost all respect for MTV (not like their was much left) after the heavily promoted documentary & we learned NOTHING new about what was really going on in her personal life. I watched with friends going, all they want you to do is feel bad for her & go out & buy the album Tuesday! Her answers were vague & she disclosed NOTHING truly personal, which I understand since technically she does have a few legal cases open concerning her custody battle, which could then be used by Federline's lawyers in court. SO basically after MTV already showered her with the VMAs in Sept. They then spun this hour & a half love letter to her to help her win back younger fans who weren't smart enough to realize it was all a bunch of B.S. "Circus" will debut at #1 next week though, which is the goal

Eliot Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 03:07 PM EST

No, it wasn't an earth-shaker. But you can tell she's on the right track. I want her to succeed, and I think any decent human being does as well, simply for her sake. She's already getting better from her performances in Europe. And of course she's lip-synching. She's a pop star, not a rock band. Just let her do her thing. If you aren't a fan, don't buy the CD.

mick Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 03:02 PM EST

It was a lackluster performance. She's not dancing anymore. Hate the miming. Hardly anyone is doing that anymore. It will be interesting to see what her sales will be. Does she have anymore fans here in America then the 897.000 that bought Blackout. Only time will tell. She may open better then the 290.000 Blackout opened with since it's near Christmas and she has promoted more, be that what it may. But can she open like Beyonce just did with 500.000. It'll be interesting to see.

susan Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 02:55 PM EST

It was a very sad performance. Looking good dosen't make up for performing bad. The blatant lipsynching, which she has always done, but the walking awkwardly around rather then any real dancing. I hate when you start getting older too like britney using these big head microphones which aren't even on. At least hold a mic. And she's always used this trick of grabbing the headmic and holding it like thats suppose to make us believe she is really singing. STOP doing that too. She's lost her mojo.

Carmen Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 02:51 PM EST

Just retire already. It's obvious she is just going through the motions. Britney never been a fan but for your own piece of mind just retire because your performances are lazy and lack luster.

Jesse Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 02:50 PM EST

She's returning to form, looked hot and worked it and will be at the top by the time I see her in concert in April!

Bertie Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 02:37 PM EST

I really expected more. Seriously, just walking around?? Anyone can do that. And we all know she can't sing, so the lipsynching really isn't a surprise. I just don't see that "wow" factor anymore. She almost looks lazy.

nancy Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 02:26 PM EST

I saw it - and it was awful...... No singing and no dancing - so just like everyone else, I was wondering "what's the big deal?" Just because she made some arm gestures and touched her head mic every once in a while - does not mean it was a show. The cake they brought out was the highlight - gorgeous cake!!! I noticed that she didn't even say thank you when they wheeled it out. I agree with the comment made about how she feels so "special" that her just showing up was a "show" enough. Everyone out there buying her "album", I have to ask WHY? There is NO signing on any of her songs - they are all studio created with all the techno effects. With the economy the way it is - I have to wonder why people will waste their money on it! Use the money to feed an unfortunate family - it'll be better spent!

mscisluv Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 01:35 PM EST

The one thing we know she can actually do is dance, so please Britney, stop standing there while others dance around you!! Put a little effort into it...this is just pathetic and frustrating for someone who want to see her be successful.

Shawna Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 01:33 PM EST

Her performance looked like she was being forced. I do not believe she wants to perform. Leave her alone. She needs time to be "normal" again.

bruno Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 01:12 PM EST

loved.

EM in MS Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 12:59 PM EST

I'm all for a Brit comeback! I like both of these new songs... Good Luck Girl!

daisyj Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 12:49 PM EST

I happened to catch the "Womanizer" performance (waiting for the shuttle to give me a ride from the auto shop), and I was pretty underwhelmed. Maybe I'm wrong, but the sense I got was that she felt like she was so special that it was enough that she would just show up-- there was no need for her to do things like "dance" and "sing" because her presence was entertainment enough. Also, the outfit she was wearing was hideously unflattering (though the other one looks a lot better).

RayT Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 12:20 PM EST

I am increasingly alarmed about Brit's readiness to go through all this album promotion given her silent and stoic demeanor during her pre-documentary interview Sunday night and again on GMA. I just picked up the album and it's phenomenal but I'm still worried about her. Again, it's clear her management and family still don't care about her and I'm worried they're pushing her to do too much too soon.

n Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 12:15 PM EST

Obviously Brit is missing that signature spark of yesteryear, but have no fear, for I guarantee it will be back for the tour. Cut the girl a sliver of slack- she's still getting that confidence back!! I love the new album, and I can't wait to see her on tour...again!! LOVE YA' BRITNEY!!!

Jim from Saint Paul Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 12:14 PM EST

As always, the best way to watch Brittney is muted.

Ahhh... now she holds value.

Brad Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 11:52 AM EST

Well, it was a slight step up from her European weekend performances.
She is just missing her old "spark" that made even lip synching seem cute and charming.
The album is still hot, she looks MUCH better than last year. I think as others have said, that Brit could learn a few things from Beyonce' about leaving everything on the stage and making every performance amazing.
That being said, if you don't like her, vote with your $$ and dont buy the cd.

graeme Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 11:46 AM EST

I like the girl, but why is she allowed to still get away with lipsyncing? After Ashlee Simpson's debaucle, almost no one lipsyncs anymore...but Britney still does. And she doesn't even dance that much, other than just strutting around the stage.

peaches Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 11:43 AM EST

I thought she looked great and put on a good show. Seeing Diane Sawyer sing Womanizer was worth getting up early for if you ask me.

Winona Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 11:42 AM EST

The "big deal" is likely that she *can* walk around and lip-synch - given the year or so she's had, that in itself is a major feat.

nicole Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 11:37 AM EST

SHE IS LIP-SYNCHING AND WALKING AROUND! What is the big deal!!!!!
