Bits and Bobs (Vol. 21): Unsung British actors (Part 2)

Dec 1, 2008, 03:00 PM | by Aubry D’Arminio

Categories: Bits and Bobs

Warrenjosephpeake_l The James McAvoy-Angelina Jolie actioner Wanted hits DVD tomorrow in standard, special, and gift-set editions. I say skip them all and Netflix the bugger. It's a ho-hum film (for James' best, see Shameless) and it's painful to see a Brit thesp as remarkable as Marc Warren (known only in the movie as "the Repairman") go so underused. Pick up any season of Marc’s grifter series Hustle, watch his fab Doctor Who episode "Love & Monsters"  (he dances to ELO's "Mr. Blue Sky"), or check out his key role alongside James in the British State of Play, and you’ll know what I mean. (Just don’t get me started on the casting of the big screen SoP remake. Ben Affleck as David Morrissey’s character? Russell Crowe as John Simm’s? Ouch, my ulcers).

Thus, in Marc, David, and John’s honors, it’s time for another list of British (and Irish) Joes you should know (after the jump) — those actors that nab tiny roles in blockbusters or popular TV, but whom Anglophiles adore. And who are hopefully bound to be huge. You know, like Russell Brand was a year ago. That way, when people say things like, “I’m so sick of Russell Tovey, he’s all over the place,” you can be like, “Dude, I pegged him as the next Doctor, last year.” (P.S. My new favorite, The Seagull actress Carey Mulligan, gets her own column next week).

1. Russell Tovey. You may remember him: as Gavin’s friend Budgie on Gavin & Stacey or athlete Rudge in History Boys. Look for him: as John Chivery in Masterpiece Classic’s Little Dorrit (premieres March 29th).
2. Dylan Moran. You may remember him as: the Notting Hill shoplifter or Simon Pegg’s doomed nemesis in Shaun of the Dead. Look for him: on DVD in his own brilliant sitcom, Black Books (he’s the boozing owner of an independent book store) or starring in the upcoming Irish dark comedy, A Film with Me in It.
3. Toby Stephens. You may remember him as: Baddie Gustav Graves in Die Another Day (he’s also Dame Maggie Smith’s son). Look for him: possibly outfoxing Richard Armitage as Prince John in Season 3 of BBC America’s Robin Hood next year.
4. Gemma Arterton. You may remember her as: Quantum of Solace’s Strawberry Fields (who didn’t coo over her five minutes of screen time?). Look for her: opposite Tudors’ star Hans Matheson as the titular heroine in Tess of the D’Urbervilles. Masterpiece Classic’s new adaptation premieres January 4th.
5. Anne-Marie Duff. You may remember her as: James McAvoy’s arm candy at every award show last season (they’re married). Look for her: Being absolutely knock-out brilliant on DVD in Shameless and The Virgin Queen, and alongside her husband in next year’s Tolstoy biopic, The Last Station.
6. Tom Hardy. You may remember him as: Failed Picard clone Shinzon in Star Trek: Nemesis or RocknRolla’s Handsome Bob. Look for him: as Heathcliff in Masterpiece’s Wuthering Heights (premieres January 18th) and Bill Sikes in Oliver Twist (February 15th).
7. Gina Bellman. You may remember her as: Ditsy, lovelorn Jane from BBC America’s Coupling. Look for her: as a sophisticated con woman and Timothy Hutton’s love interest in the new TNT series Leverage (premieres December 7th).
8. Lee Ingleby. You may remember him as: Knight Bus conductor Stan Shunpike in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Look for him: on DVD in George Gently and opposite Sienna Miller, Cillian Murphy, and Max Minghella in Beeban Kidron’s upcoming Hippie Hippie Shake.
9. Paterson Joseph. You may remember him as: “NumberWang” contestant Simon on BBC America’s That Mitchell and Webb Look, or from the two-episode Doctor Who reality show farce “Bad Wolf” and “The Parting of Ways.” Look for him: as a rival sleuth when The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency becomes a short series next year.
10. Rupert Penry-Jones. You may remember him as: brother Piers du Pré in Hilary and Jackie, his eight minutes of screen time as “Henry” (yeah, I don’t even remember him) in Match Point. Look for him: on DVD January 20th as spy Adam Carter in MI-5, Vol. 6 (which never made it to TV in the states).
11. Maxine Peake. You may remember her as: dirty-talking, platinum blonde Veronica in Shameless. Have I mentioned that show yet? Look for her: also in Little Dorrit as Miss Wade, and next summer in Marple: They Do It With Mirrors.

So, who's on your list? Whom did I miss? And what other works by these actors would you recommend?

The History Boys - the whole lot of them - should be on this list, especially James Corden ('Gavin and Stacey'), Dominic Cooper ('Mamma Mia', 'Duchess'), Samuel Barnett ('Beautiful People', 'John Adams'), and the aforementioned Russell Tovey. As should the entire cast of every season of 'Spooks'/'MI-5'. Good list though. Toby Stephens, Richard Armitage, and Rupert Penry-Jones make my television and me very happy.

Lee Ingelby would be terrific- look at the variety of roles he's taken from The Pillowman (same role as D Tenant), Master and Commander, Wind in the Willows, The Street, George Gently. He's able to play right across from nasty types to friendley hero types. He's almost too good but as he knows alot of the DW people perhaps someone has thought of him.

emery Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 11:00 AM EST

A few of my "under the radar" favorites:

Liam Cunningham -- at 47 he's sexier than ever and he always gives a fine performance whether it's Hollywood drivel (the latest Mummy movie), ITV drivel (the latest Northanger Abbey) or a quality indie production (The Hunger or The Wind That Shakes the Barley.

Ian Hart -- one of my favorite character actors to watch. He's a very subtle scene stealer. Check him out in The Virgin Queen and get a dose of Ann Marie Duff's extraordinary talent as well.

Ken Stott -- that guy has a wonderful hang dog mug and in Rebus he's the closest thing we have to an Inspector Morse now that John Thaw is gone (sob).

Emily Mortimer - does this woman ever pick a bad project?! She's amazing. Her latest, truly fine performance can be seen on DVD in Transibberean, a sweet, tight thriller with Ben Kingsley playing a cool Russian cop. Or, watch her play an American in the exquisite Lars and the Real Girl.

jess Tue, Dec 9, 2008 at 01:29 PM EST

Re: Gina Bellman - don't forget her appearance as the Jekyll wife/twinbabymama in the James Nesbitt starrer Jekyll.
how could you not love Jekyll? it was Cold Feet's Adam plus Coupling's Jane in a great story drama.

Sue T Sun, Dec 7, 2008 at 08:26 AM EST

Matthew Macfadyen - why does the US entertainment press CONTINUE to overlook the extremely talented and beautiful man. People magazine better add him to their 50 Most Beautiful People issue real soon!!

Melissa Sun, Dec 7, 2008 at 07:15 AM EST

Russell Tovey was fantastic in Ashes to Ashes- he can really act!!!

Dori Sat, Dec 6, 2008 at 11:57 AM EST

How wonderful to see the amazingly talented Lee Ingleby on this list (number 8). He's fantastic - don't miss his achingly brilliant performance as the doomed Hollom in "Master and Commander/The Far Side of the World."

Ellie Stanton Sat, Dec 6, 2008 at 01:44 AM EST

How about Rupert Penry-Jones in ITV's 2007 update of Jane Austen's Persuasion? Absolutely dashing as Captain Wentworth.

Sarah Sat, Dec 6, 2008 at 12:19 AM EST

As someone who has adored Lee Ingleby for years and years, I just wanted to say a huge thank you for including him on this list!!!

Wed, Dec 3, 2008 at 11:14 AM EST

C., Some TV appearances? Have you seen Shameless? He's in the whole first season and it is incredible. Wanted is a terrible money maker.

C. Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 09:10 PM EST

Sometimes you seem to be in some personal crusade against McAvoy...I receive a google alert for this blog and bingo! Never a straight compliment, just veiled criticism.
"Shameless" is McAvoy's best?! Ha! Try Atonement, Last King of Scotland, Macbeth, Inside I'm Dancing, Starter for Ten...the man is a superb actor, and you're limiting him to some tv appearences.

Jonas Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 03:41 PM EST

Paterson Joseph will be a brilliant Doctor Who!!!
..and yes, Shameless is fantastic.
(Is it just me or does Sundance Channel have better stuff from the UK then BBC America??,,,just look at the Bits and Bobs Calendar)

Anyway,
Liz White who played Annie Cartwright on the original Life on Mars is a great! She was in The Street and Ultimate Force as well.

Julian Rhind-Tutt best known Inspector Monty Pippin from Keen Eddie on this side of the pond.

Alex Wyndham from Rome Series II and in the Swedish film Arn - The Templar Knight. (I have to be patriotic and recomend this knights in shining armor flick...and it is mostly in English so no need to read subtitles...and it stars some other Brits as well).

Laura M. Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 11:26 AM EST

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned the fact that Paterson Joseph is all but certain to be the next Doctor Who. And I, for one, think it's an exciting choice (even though I am still going to miss David Tennant terribly).

Also, glad you included Toby Stephens on this list, but how could you fail to mention his brilliant, fan-girl cementing turn as Mr. Rochester in the excellent 2006 BBC mini-series of "Jane Eyre"? Sacrilege!

josher Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 11:03 AM EST

I noticed in a British newspaper that there have been several new Poirot films with David Suchet shown on ITV. Do you know if they're scheduled for Masterpiece Mystery?

Verity Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 10:19 AM EST

Thanks for all the great highlights! It looks like we're in for a treat with all the new Masterpiece stuff coming out next year. Also, can't wait for next week's "Carrey Mulligan" column! That girl is going to be huge. I keep hoping we'll see Sally Sparrow again on Doctor Who but I believe CM may be getting too busy for that to ever happen.

Aubrey, can you confirm the whispers I've been hearing about a new BBC adaptation of Emma? If it's true, I'd like to start the petition to get Richard Armitage cast as Mr. Knightley right away!

Alex Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 04:35 AM EST

Oh my sweet soul, I love this column! Thanks so much for all the love for my favorite Brit actors John Simm and Marc Warren. And yes, Love & Monsters was a great DW episode! Marc Warren was genius!
That State of Play remake sounds just frightening. Why can’t we just leave the Brit classics alooooone!
My list of very talented and underused Brit actors include:
- Philip Glenister (The original and best! Gene Hunt is one of the best TV creations ever and that is largely due to his ball-breaking performance of the narcissistic DCI. And he’s in SoP too! I looove him. Can he please be the new Doctor?)
- Harry Lloyd (the wonderful Will Scarlett on Robin Hood and was an excellent baddie in Doctor Who S3))
- Jonas Armstrong (Robin Hood himself. Gosh, he’s lovely. Noticed him first on another great TV show called Teachers)
- Dylan Moran. Great call Aubry! He is HILARIOUS on Black Books and is such a cutie – stone drunk or not.
- Catherine Tate (James McAvoy’s mom in Starter for 10 and in DW S4)

Zach Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 01:55 AM EST

Don't hate on WANTED! It was the bets thrill ride of the year! And it's hard to pull off a feat like that given today's overly CGI-infested crop of fantasies and superhero chronicles.

Nix Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 12:02 AM EST

Hustle needs to be on DVD. (Is it? must check.) Or better yet downloadable in high quality?

Jeanine Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 11:41 PM EST

I just wanted to add a big cheer for the mention of "Shameless." That first season (the only one available so far in the US) is AMAZING. James McAvoy is terrific and Anne-Marie Duff is heart-breakingly excellent. All of the actors on the show are just perfect.

Liz Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 11:23 PM EST

You need to include Matthew Macfadyen in that list - brilliant as Tom Quinn in Spooks/MI-5, and droolworthy as Darcy in Pride and Prejudice. Currently airing on BBC as the lead in Little Dorrit (to be here on PBS in a few months) and about to open in Frost/Nixon as Frost's producer this week. All that and most people still don't know his name!

Emily Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 10:17 PM EST

Marc Warren in Green Street Hooligans, not his greatest role but definitely memorable. Excellent movie as well.

Abby Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 09:50 PM EST

Raj- I don't know why others are hating on Love and Monsters, but I can tell you why I do: I find the plot and the villain utterly ridiculous (come on, the Absorbaloff?)- I have no quarrel with the actors, just the writers. Of course, that's just my opinion, and the beauty of Doctor Who is that there have been so many episodes that there's something for everyone!

Crystal Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 09:29 PM EST

Outfox Richard Armitage?! Surely you jest ;)
And I must defend "Wanted" because the sheer ridiculousness of it makes me smile. Classic popwatch entry and comments here:
http://popwatch.ew.com/popwatch/2008/07/wanted-ridiculo.html

ks Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 08:43 PM EST

Danny!!!! when are you and the team from Hustle coming back?? We miss you!

Raj Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 08:10 PM EST

Why all the Love & Monsters hate on the board? Shirley Henderson=Petite Goddess.

Jez Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 07:47 PM EST

You forgot Paterson Joseph's brilliant performance from Peep Show (Season 1's on DVD.)

cruzilla Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 07:42 PM EST

Lee Ingleby is heartbreaking in Master anc Commander - thanks for giving him some props!

@Ryan - I will happily suffer the selective amnesia about the State of Play remake with you!

Any news on when the original Life on Mars will be available on DVD?

dj Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 07:02 PM EST

That's NUMBERWANG!!!

Liz E Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 06:06 PM EST

Any list of unsung Brits must include the incomparable and desperately beautiful Matthew Macfadyen.

Linda Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 06:01 PM EST

Aw, Susan, bless you for mentioning Cambridge Spies. And I agree, Stephens was magical as Rochester- I own the DVDs.

Ryan Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 06:00 PM EST

State of Play remake? I'm going to pretend I never read about that- selective amnesia, anyone?

Susan Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 05:53 PM EST

Yes, Toby Stephens! He was magical as Rochester in the 2006 Jane Eyre, which was for a time one of the top-selling DVDs on PBS. And yes, the Tenant of Wildfell Hall just recently became available on DVD. Toby is also quite good in Cambridge Spies, Almost Strangers, Twelfth Night, Photographing Fairies (VHS only), Onegin, Mangal Pandey, the Great Gatsby, as well as audiobook readings of Heart of Darkness (online only through Silksound audiobooks) and Tales of the Arabian Nights. Also check out clips of his 2005 stage performance as Hamlet on the Royal Shakespeare Company website. Toby rules!

Leia947 Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 05:38 PM EST

Tim Roth is a vastly underrated British actor. Here's to hoping his series on Fox, Lie To Me, is a hit. Just like House was for Hugh Laurie.

Deb Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 05:35 PM EST

Guess I can't avoid it any longer. I'm going to have to start watching Robin Hood if Toby Stephens is going to be on. I have some catching up to do.

JJ Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 05:18 PM EST

Andrew Lincoln - great in "Love Actually" but also on "Teachers" (BBC version, obviously)

anne Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 05:18 PM EST

Love Toby Stephens! I remember him from this Masterpiece The Tenant of Wildfell Hall back in the 90s in which starred with Tara Fitzgerald and Rupert Graves. Boy do I wish it was DVD. He was also great in the Twelfth Night film opposite
Also excited for Rupert Penry-Jones in new MI-5 --what season does Richard Armitage show up?

meg Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 05:00 PM EST

I'm a dedicated Rupert Penry-Jones fan, but season 6 of MI-5 is absolutely traumatic. I just watched Mistresses a couple of months ago because it had Raza Jaffrey (Zaf from MI-5) and was so surprised when Anna Torv became JJ Abrams "It" girl on Fringe.

Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 05:00 PM EST

Rupert Penry Jones!!!! That man is GORGEOUS!

Rose Tyler Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 04:57 PM EST

Patterson Joseph is one of the top choices for the next Doctor. Some odds makers have him on top in fact. I liked Love and Monsters quite a bit and I do not want to ever talk about the US remake of State of Play. How can you condense 6 amazing hours into a movie!? Shameless is a great show. Enough rambling.

Rachael Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 04:41 PM EST

I agree, Horatio- the last season of Hustle was definitely a bit of a letdown. And to aa- well *parts* of Wanted were freaking awesome, but for the most part, the movie was ridiculous. That's just my opinion though.

aa Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 04:29 PM EST

sorry to interrupt all the brit chat but wanted was freaking awesome!

Martha Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 03:47 PM EST

Thanks for the Toby Stephens and Gina Bellman shout-outs. Bellman looks like the best thing in this new 'Leverage' series, which TNT seems to be marketing like crazy. Did anyone else get a flash drive, for pete's sake?!?

Horatio Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 03:45 PM EST

Watch all bur the last season of Hustle, as that one without Adrian Lester (Mickey) paled compared with the first three. But it was nice to see Marc Warren in a Hollywood flick; even if he was only known as the Repairman.

Katie Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 03:44 PM EST

You missed Andrea Riseborough!!

Maddi Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 03:40 PM EST

I'd like Love and Monsters if it weren't so existentially terrifying at the end (I don't think that was the idea at all!). :D

carmen Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 03:37 PM EST

**Playtone-produced

Sorry, I spaced out while typing :)

carmen Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 03:36 PM EST

I found a lovely little James McAvoy Platone-produced movie called "Starter for 10" at my local library. Definitely recommend it. He's got great comedic timing, he's an amazingly talented dramatic actor, and he's wonderful to look at. Is there anything he can't do?

You LIKE Love and Monsters? I don't know any one who likes it! I do thank you for giving love to these terrific actors who are so underappreciated over here. I love Shameless, and I'm also a fan of the 2006 Jane Eyre with Toby Stephens (and Ruth Wilson).

I heard a rumor that Patterson Joseph is in the running for Dr. Who. He was brilliant as Emperor Jones!

Hear, hear to all this folks! (And no, don't get me started on the big-screen 'State of Play' either. Ugh.) I like Adrian Lester too: seen in Kenneth Branagh's 'As You Like It' and also the ring leader in 'Hustle.' And Ruth Jones and James Corden should be stars over on this side of the pond...
