'Watchmen' vs. 'Star Trek': You may choose only one!

Nov 17, 2008, 11:54 AM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: 'Watchmen', Movie Trailers, Star Trek

Because coming back to work after a hellaciously short weekend isn't painful enough, I now present the ultimate Sophie's Choice scenario for sci-fi geeks and blockbuster lovers alike: View the spankin' new trailers for Watchmen and Star Trek below, and then tell us, if you could only see one of 'em, which would it be?

Unlike my colleague Marc Bernardin, who blogged about the Star Trek trailer over the weekend, I am not a Trekkie/Trekker (though I'm married to someone who can sometimes be found watching DVR'd Next Generation episodes when I'm out of the house or asleep). And maybe that's why even though J.J. Abrams' franchise update looks exciting, I think I'm gonna have to go with Watchmen. Its trailer is decidedly dark, in both tone and color, and while that means certain scenes practically disappear from my dinky computer screen, the flashes of each character -- particularly Jeffrey Dean Morgan as The Comedian and The Comeback's Malin Akerman as Silk Spectre -- look pretty amazing. I'm sure my excitement for Watchmen is further primed by the fact that I read Alan Moore's terrific source material only a month ago, but from this vantage point, Watchmen looks different from anything I've seen on screen in a while. The Star Trek trailer, on the other hand, while it certainly has its share of adrenaline-elevating action and explosions and outer-space-y bling, might be, at certain moments, mistaken for a CW TV series (kid Kirk jumping out of convertible at cliff's edge), an Army recruitment ad ("you feel like you were meant for something better, something special"), and maybe even a very special episode of Battlestar Galactica (those outer-space battle sequences).

But that's just me. And while you could argue that a Team Star Trek vs. Team Watchmen showdown is nothing more than an artificial controversy, it's also a fun one. So quit sitting on the fence, PopWatchers, and pick your team in the poll below (then drop down to the comments section and tell us why)!

I'm picking Watchmen. I really like JJ Abrams, but c'mon, hasn't Star Trek already had it's day? I'm afraid that it's going to be like Episodes 1-3 of Star Wars. It was nice to have something new, but ultimately a complete travesty.

Vulcangirl98 Mon, Dec 29, 2008 at 09:09 PM EST

The answer to the letter scramble in a comment previous to mine is Chris Doohan, obviously.
Did you know that Leonard Nimoy went through 105 pairs of fake pointed ears during the original series?

Dif-tor heh smusma.
That means "Live long and prosper" in Vulcan. ]:-I

Vulcangirl98 Mon, Dec 29, 2008 at 09:04 PM EST

I, for one, think the Star Trek trailer is awesome!!! I have absolutely no idea what Watchmen is, so therefore I choose Star Trek.
I am a huge fan of Star Trek, but only the original series. Although, when I was four I loved Voyager!
I'm worried about the recasting...
Only Leonard Nimoy can truly be Spock.
Does anyone else think so?

Yesenia Mon, Dec 29, 2008 at 09:02 AM EST

I really love the Star Trek trailor but Watchmen's was nice too. I'm not as familiar with them though so it was easier to decide what I'm more excited to see. I guess I'm a bit biased.

I'd watch Watchmen for my faith in the director alone.

Rafael Webster Mon, Dec 29, 2008 at 01:24 AM EST

The Star Trek trailer is Amazing.

The Watchmen trailer is Unimpressive. I think the movie will definitely be great, but this particular trailer is a big Yawn.

Nancy Sun, Dec 28, 2008 at 06:09 PM EST

The preview for Watchmen looks great! So, I would go for this one first.

As much as I love Star Trek, I'm going with Watchmen.

larry Mon, Nov 24, 2008 at 02:53 PM EST

but watchmen looks like its going to be great but with star trek looks like other action movie almost looks like star wars.

Jeffrey Mon, Nov 24, 2008 at 12:04 PM EST

I think what it comes down to is that Snyder runs a bigger risk of failure because the goal is so high, it's a treasure respected story and no one's going to "remake" Watchmen in a few years like they do everything else. JJ Abrams can likely only improve on Star Trek because, whatever its good points are, at least half of Star Trek has been little more than a popular, fun, cartoonlike escapism. Abrams is a master at creating popular, fun, noncartoonlike escapism that you actually need a brain to watch. Odds are WAY against it being bad, odds are a somewhat against Watchmen approaching 75% perfect.

Jeffrey Mon, Nov 24, 2008 at 11:58 AM EST

I'm not concerned about the "different" ending of Watchmen. In the graphic novel, I believe Moore and Gibbons made Osterman/Dr. Manhattan believable but not the squid. It was corny somehow in a way I can't quite describe. It was not the point or the crux of the story. The movie COULD still be great without it. Just hoping they don't trim it any more and Snyder holds out for his current 2 hr 40 minute length (still probably 90 mins-2hrs too short).

bwelch37 Sat, Nov 22, 2008 at 05:35 PM EST

I have to say, I have always been skeptical on the prospects of a Watchmen movie. I just never thought it could be done. It was created to showcase what comics can do that no other medium can. It has depth that cannot be replicated anywhere else.

I'm sure all Watchmen fans feel this same way, and the good news is that Zack Snyder is one of us. The reason he took on the project is because he knew a movie would happen eventually, and as a fan, he wanted to make sure it was done right. That makes me feel a lot better.

Unfortunately, this news about the changed ending makes me cringe. Deviation from the original plot is what everyone fears the most when they see a film adaptation of a book, especially a book such as this... And if there were to be any moment I would want unaltered, it's the ending. It's the most shocking and profound moment of the story. I have been really looking forward to seeing how people that hadn't read the book would react to it.

So I'm not sure what to think.

hi

Mekt_Ranzz Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 06:20 PM EST

I loved the Star Trek trailer but I have to admit I liked the Watchmen one a bit more. Like many people, I've been waiting for a Watchmen movie for a long time. The graphic novel was amazing and has inspired me since I first read it a little over 20 years ago. But only recently in the last three years has it taken on a new meaning for me. Without elaborating too much, I will say that as a 9/11 truth activist, I truly believe that the Watchmen movie, and specifically some of the core concepts of the story, will eventually help launch a new truly independent investigation of 9/11. That said, I can’t wait to see both Watchmen and Star Trek on the big screen.

Jonsul Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 09:40 AM EST

@Steven Herrera
What are you talking about? 300 was an amazing success, and masterpiece. It made $456.1 million on a $65 million budget!

With the excitement built on Watchmen it's definitely going to be good, and be as if not better then 300.

It's sad because I'd really like to see both, I've been a Trek fan since a kid and the new movie looks really good. But I'll have to side with Watchmen.

larry Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 06:44 PM EST

WATCHMEN is going to be great. i can't wait for it, its going to be HUGE.

Tennessee Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 05:52 PM EST

Trekmovie.com has both the Star Trek and Watchmen trailers. I am voting for the Trek trailer just like I did in my last post, but I'll be paying my money to see them both.

Tennessee Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 05:43 PM EST

Move over, Batman. Star Trek's going to give you some competition. Definitely not 1960's Trek. This movie will rock the house.

BA Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 03:45 PM EST

Watchmen is going to be incredible and change the whole genre of superhero movies and what people think of them. Star Trek, not so much.

brittney Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 09:45 AM EST

STAR TREK LOOKS LIKE A MTV MOVIE WITH AN MTV CAST OF KIDS. WATCHMEN LOOKS LIKE ITS GOING TO BE GREAT.

Steven Herrera Tue, Nov 18, 2008 at 10:29 PM EST

Watchmen looks like another promising flop. Just like 300. Its going to have no depth like the comics did. It's impossible. Reason why Moore HATES FILM ADAPTIONS. Its going to be loud, stupid and long; UNLIKE THE GRAPHIC NOVEL, which was brilliant.

STAR TREK is going to be a breath of fresh air. The visuals are going to update the series and films (the recent ones have given STAR TREK a bad name). And I doubt is going to be like a CW TV show; those, bluntly said, SUCK.

STAR TREK all the way. Watchmen comes a close second. Any movie that requires an actual SONG (pop/rock) to have excitement ...

Redbox Tue, Nov 18, 2008 at 08:46 PM EST

Thanks Hugo... I just felt I had to say it..

Star Trek = S T U P I D ! ! ! ! !

"Redbox
Watchmen. The most brilliant work of comics greatest writer and it looks amazing. Star Trek may be good, but Star Trek fans and SciFi fans in general aren't discerning and welcome trash with treasure, which is why we have so many bad SciFi shows and many boring Star Trek series. After Battlestar Gallactica, I think Star Trek was handed it's tired hat and told to retire. I'll see this one, because it looks innovative, and I love the old show, but Watchmen is a complete and finite dream of what comics could become and at best, Star Trek is a restart of a tired idea, kept alive by addicted fans who no longer can tell the difference between good or bad and just want something "Star Trek" to worship. Between "Trekkies" and the "Browncoats" they give SciFi a bad name."

Amen to that

watchmen looks great. so its watchmen i would watch opening night.

Steve Tue, Nov 18, 2008 at 10:59 AM EST

This movie is going to be fabulous indeed.

TRIVIA: Do you know?

OTHER THEN LEONARD NIMOY, WHO IS THE ONLY OTHER ACTOR TO BE IN BOTH STAR TREK THE MOTION PICTURE IN 1979 AND THE NEW STAR TREK MOVIE COMING IN MAY?.

Answer letter srabble: ridooschanh

Mark Tue, Nov 18, 2008 at 10:30 AM EST

I have to go with Watchmen simply because "Take A Bow" by Muse is absolutely an incredible song and gives the scenes a huge dramatic flair. It also looks to be an amazing movie that just may trump "The Dark Knight" as one of the greatest superhero movies ever. Still excited about Star Trek, though.

elly Tue, Nov 18, 2008 at 10:14 AM EST

i loved TNG. deep space nine was some of the best tv in general once it found its legs (ie. the dominion). but as far as i'm concerned, star trek is nicely wrapped up...and every time i see that past in the trailer of jeffery dean morgan as the comedian in 'nam, i freak out with excitement. plus, i'll actually pay cineplex dollars to see 'watchmen'. so!

Troy Tue, Nov 18, 2008 at 09:25 AM EST

Liked the "TREK" trailer more and I'll be looking forward to the opening day.

Questions:
One: was Kirk (as a kid) stealing a 1960's Corvette ?
Two: What does the classic car run on anyway ? Gasoline ? Not likely...

Carol Tue, Nov 18, 2008 at 08:58 AM EST

The Star Trek IMDB has Chris Doohan playing a Starfleet Officer. Is he related to James Doohan? If so, I hope he's in a Engineering or transporter room scene. Kudos

Ben Tue, Nov 18, 2008 at 08:57 AM EST

Roger: I heard that Ryder is playing Spock's mom in this movie.

Ben Tue, Nov 18, 2008 at 08:55 AM EST

I choose Watchmen. I'm a Trek fan, but this movie is for the kids who may never have watched a Trek series or movie before. So...this is the cinematic equivalent of somebody cutting in front of you in line. Paramount is hoping to grab the younger market while maybe not alienating older fans. Good luck with that. Watchmen doesn't have Alan Moore's blessing I am sure, but if the movie can capture even half of the magic of the graphic novel, it should be a great moviegoing experience.

christy Tue, Nov 18, 2008 at 08:47 AM EST

watchmen looks like its going to be a great movie. star trek I woundn't even rent that movie out. watchmen all the way.

Redbox Tue, Nov 18, 2008 at 08:03 AM EST

Susan D Tue, Nov 18, 2008 at 07:52 AM EST

As much as I love my Superheroes, I'm a Trekkie first, so it's gotta be Star Trek!

Roger Tue, Nov 18, 2008 at 06:06 AM EST

Side note: The Star Trek trailer is now available on apple.com. At the end when the credits rolled I noticed Winona Ryder listed. So I watch the trailer again & sure enough she's on it. Pause the trailer at the 1:20 mark and you'll see her holding Spock's arm as they're running down a canyon floor. I for one did not know she was on this movie. Anybody has info on what role she plays?

Jen Tue, Nov 18, 2008 at 04:35 AM EST

Heh, 'geek tragedy'. I see what you did there.

And the winner is ... Tue, Nov 18, 2008 at 02:07 AM EST

I'm neither a Trekkie nor a ... um .. Watchie? ... but I have to say the Watchmen trailer blows the Star Trek one away. And I love J.J. Abrams. If I want to watch Sylar get angry, I'll pop in those couple of episodes of Heroes back in Season 1 that were halfway decent.

Nix Tue, Nov 18, 2008 at 02:01 AM EST

Star Trek. Much more of a Trek fan than a comic book geek, though I can't be much of either, as I neither have a Klingon name nor have ever read the Moore gn—nor want to accomplish either.

Of course, since I never watch movies in theaters anyway, my opinion is like a cow's. It's moo.

Spaceman Spiff Tue, Nov 18, 2008 at 01:45 AM EST

Star Trek is the obvious choice, no question. Anyone who doesn't realize that is, well, simply out of it.

Mario da Silva Tue, Nov 18, 2008 at 01:43 AM EST

I like Movies that stimulate the imagination of the (possibility of a) better FUTURE, not a look at the possible DESTRUCTION of the human race. I dislike DOOMsayers, and films that portend doom, although the Real world looks like it's going that way.
All said, I'd watch Star Trek FIRST!

Derek Tue, Nov 18, 2008 at 12:55 AM EST

Like many other genre fans, I will see both as soon as they come out. But if I had to choose one, it would be Star Trek because: a) my love of Trek from childhood is hardwired in my brain, b) my current obsession with Lost gives me faith in JJ Abrams and c) the trailer is pretty awesome. Maybe because I'm a comic fan and have been more let down by comic adaptations, I'm wary of Watchmen disappointing me. Zach Synder is brilliant visually but I found 300 to be kind of bombastic and dumb.

Kysha Tue, Nov 18, 2008 at 12:52 AM EST

Star Trek. The trailer actually leaves me...well, breathless!

Steven Mon, Nov 17, 2008 at 11:34 PM EST

The teaser Watchmen trailer made me run out and buy the book. The second one made me less excited about seeing the movie. Kinda gave me a bad feeling about it.
The new Trek trailer has me more excited about that movie. There hasn't been a good one since First Contact.
Did McCoy say that space was full of "darkness and Cylons"? (no, of course not)

Dwight Schrute Mon, Nov 17, 2008 at 11:16 PM EST

Michael Slezak is so gay.

JustAnotherLoser Mon, Nov 17, 2008 at 11:16 PM EST

I'm a little comcerned over Watchmen, but will most likely still be seeing it, even if I wait til it's out on DVD to rent it. But the Trek trailer did get me excited when I saw it before Quantum of Solace the other day. All the naysayers are just too serious and should really lighten up. Especially since they are STILL going to see it along with everyone else despite their protests. Yes, LIGHTEN UP!

vNext Mon, Nov 17, 2008 at 11:13 PM EST

Watchmen because it has nudity and sexuality... I mean, it's called Watchmen for a reason and I am going to be one of them.

anthony Mon, Nov 17, 2008 at 11:10 PM EST

i dont know which movie going to be good but i like both of them

Simon Mon, Nov 17, 2008 at 10:25 PM EST

This movie is going to ROCK!!! I just looked at the Star Trek IMDB and found out that the son of the original Scotty, Chris Doohan has a role in the movie. How cool is that!!

zadok Mon, Nov 17, 2008 at 10:16 PM EST

I have never seen nor heard(at length) of either Watchmen or Star Trek, but the stunning visuals and more interesting story of Watchmen has my attention. Plus the characters in Watchmen being regular(vulnerable) people with complex lives and issues hidden beneath the surface wins over the "when they were cadets" story that is apparently told in the ST movie. As far as characters go I feel that Silk Spectre will be the emotional link to the audiance in Watchmen.

Scott Mon, Nov 17, 2008 at 10:01 PM EST

Star Trek is the obvious choice. It's been a long time since I felt like I couldn't wait to see a movie. Now Watchmen, I'll wait for the dvd on that one.

LeeJR Mon, Nov 17, 2008 at 09:57 PM EST

As for the Watchmen, although Zack Snyder's visuals look great, I worry about whether he'll get the spirit of the Watchmen correct. 300 looked great, but really was overwrought and overblown for anyone who read the original graphic novel. Leonidas wasn't the blustering, boasting King of the movie; in the graphic novel he came across as relatively thoughtful and calming. Frankly, there's a lot of material which is intertwined and related in Watchmen. I'm not sure it can be condensed into a three hour movie. Watchmen ultimately was about the nature of humanity and the ethics of the manipulation of humans and society, not about the heroes' stylishness or appearance. The only hero of Watchmen with powers is Dr. Manhattan who is coldly perfect in his logic and emotionless. The others all have serious emotional and psychologic issues. Watchmen will be a stylish visual feast but may miss the point of Alan Moore's original work.

LeeJR Mon, Nov 17, 2008 at 09:49 PM EST

I understand that many are upset about the trailers suggesting that JJ Abrams is tweaking and somehow dumbing down Star Trek to appeal to the masses and make a buck. I've watched TOS, TNG, DS9, Voyager, Enterprise, adn all the movies over and over. I even used to read some of the fan written fiction. Haven't any of you fellow Trekkers ever wanted to see Kirk and Spock as cadets? Trekkers and non-Trekkers alike equate Kirk with William Shatner. Although Shatner's performance was iconic, it's parodied over and over; joking about Kirk/Shatner and the hamming has been commonplace in popular culture for years. JJ Abrams has been given the extraordinary opportunity to give us an in-depth glimpse into Kirk himself, to give Trekkers and non-Trekkers alike a vision of what must be an amazing story. Amazingly powerful psychologic and social forces mold each and every one of us; I greatly look forward to seeing if JJ Abrams pulls this off

Henry Mon, Nov 17, 2008 at 09:36 PM EST

I'll watch both, but I think the more anticipated film is Watchmen and the trailer reflects that. We still don't know much about the Star Trek film beyond the fact that they're going back to the beginning of the days of Kirk and Spock (and the Enterprise doesn't look all that much different from the ship of 40 years ago).

RT Mon, Nov 17, 2008 at 09:29 PM EST

No squid, no Watchman. Go Trek. http://blog.wired.com/underwire/2008/11/director-confir.html

Leland James Mon, Nov 17, 2008 at 09:14 PM EST

Star Trek looks troubling. Watchman, unlike the reboot of ST, is not an overhyped, ultragloss/post-Michael Bay style action film. I'm a huge fan of Star Trek, and particularly fond of the previous films, but this movie does not look like my style. But watchmen looks insanely close to the source, despite small creative choices, and that is all it will take to make a good adaptation. I'll see Star Trek, but the new trailer has me bracing for grave dissapointment...and the move of the release date from Christmas to May seems not only wrong for a trek film (They're more of a Fall Season Fare) but may hint at problems. Plus Abrams didn't wow me with M:I 3. Love Lost, and Alias, but Fringe, Six Degrees...I'm afraid Star Trek could fall in his miss pile.

JJ Mon, Nov 17, 2008 at 09:14 PM EST

Yeah I am going with WATCHMEN, I love the book and I think its fair to say that I am unbiased because I loved Star Trek as a kid. The STAR TREK trailer started out too corny for me to say it is a great trailer, where WATCHMEN all around was an amazing trailer!

kathy Mon, Nov 17, 2008 at 09:02 PM EST

Star Trek all the way. JJ is going to rejuvenate the entire Star Trek franchise. He is a brilliant storyteller. Can't wait to see it.

Rachelsun Mon, Nov 17, 2008 at 08:41 PM EST

This is a hard choice. I am a sci-fi fan and have no need to think I look cool by saying neither.

But have to go w/ Watchmen, looks new and exciting and not so sure about this re-boot of Star Trek. Of course will see both when they come out.:)

Wild Hare Mon, Nov 17, 2008 at 08:26 PM EST

More into Asian and European flicks so first thought was "Neither". "Watchmen" sounded promising but the trailer really falls flat. THUD !! I would probably demand a refund after the first five minutes. Not a Trek/ie/er but the trailer at least looks interesting. I might see after it's been out a few weeks.

R Rothchild Mon, Nov 17, 2008 at 08:23 PM EST

Although I will say that the new Star Trek trailer is pretty badass.

R Rothchild Mon, Nov 17, 2008 at 08:21 PM EST

Watchmen looks fantastic. Star Trek is lame.

jack Mon, Nov 17, 2008 at 08:20 PM EST

im realy astounde that some people would choose star trek over tchen. while they are two different movies, and i would ee both, watchmen will be the one im waiting for. hw dear someone compare it to mx payne. thats like comparing citizn kane to white chicks. not done

Wild Hare Mon, Nov 17, 2008 at 08:10 PM EST

First thought was "Neither". More into Asian and European flicks. Nit a Trek/er/ie either. The premiss for "Watchmen" is interesting but the trailer falls flat. So - if I see either it'll be the new Trek.

Jeffrey Mon, Nov 17, 2008 at 07:53 PM EST

And what's with the supposedly perceptive EW writers like Slezak not even understanding the trailers they're writing about? He mocks it as being like an army recruitment ad, but that's the actual point of that segment: Kirk felt he was meant for something bigger, and he's literally recruited into Starfleet. I mean, that's actually what's happening. The writers have imagined a futuristic army ad. How did he not get that?

Jeffrey Mon, Nov 17, 2008 at 07:50 PM EST

Yeah, right, Zack Synder, not Brett Ratner. Got confused there. Ratner was originally supposed to do the Superman remake, right?

Jeffrey Mon, Nov 17, 2008 at 07:49 PM EST

Watchmen, obviously. But one caveat: JJ Abrams is not going to make Trek worse, he's going to make it better, while it is certainly possible that Brett Ratner could screw up Watchmen. I doubt it, though. If Abrams and Ratner have done their jobs, Watchmen will be far better, because it's a bigger, better idea with an actual message and meaning, and Star Trek isn't, really. It's just a cool space movie.

Jessica S. Mon, Nov 17, 2008 at 07:47 PM EST

I will absolutely see both-luckily they open months apart so I don't really have to choose. Were they being released the same day, I would have to choose Watchmen to view first based on trailers alone. I love Zack Snyder's work and can't wait to see what he brings. That being said, I'm so excited to see what Abrams and Co. have done with Star Trek, a series that only grabbed me during TNG.

reggiehammond Mon, Nov 17, 2008 at 07:34 PM EST

watchmen.

Fwer Mon, Nov 17, 2008 at 07:26 PM EST

WATCHMEN,WATCHMEN,WATCHMEN, WATCHMEN WATCHMEN, WATCHMEN

ALL THE WAY

Mon, Nov 17, 2008 at 06:55 PM EST

Thankfully, I will never have to know what it's like to only see one of these films, as I fully intend on seeing both of them the very instant they're released.

Ep Sato Mon, Nov 17, 2008 at 06:45 PM EST

Trekkies, you are fooling yourselves if you think this new Trek's going to be any good. It's an odd numbered Trek! All the odd numbered Treks were bad. Compare Trek 5 (row row row your boat) to Trek 2 (KHAAAAAAAAAN!). Or compare Trek 7 (let's play pirates!) to Trek 8 (BORG).

With Watchmen, you get amazing source material and a director who seems to be as into the Watchmen comics as us fanboys were when they first came out. How can any "reimagined" series carry that kind of weight?

claire Mon, Nov 17, 2008 at 06:34 PM EST

watchmen is an event right now, given the current obsession with superheroes. have to watch that.

Star Trek all the way...
1. Better the Devil you know...
2. Never read Watchmen

Watchmen! GO read the graphic novel.

Ali Mon, Nov 17, 2008 at 05:01 PM EST

Watchmen is WAY BETTER than Star Trek! ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?!??!?!

I'll definitely be watching the watchmen when it comes out!

RORSCHACH pwns the entire thing

As much as I am excited to see Star Trek done right on the big screen (and with new people! I mean, Zachary Quinto? Hells Yeah!), I've been waiting for Watchmen since the mid-nineties. Well, I've been waiting since I read the comic and decided that it should be shown in its stream-like comic book glory on the big screen. Watchmen, with unknown actors and gritty real-world plots (move over, Batman The Dark Knight!), already sounds amazing, and my excitement is only contained by the fact that no one knows what Watchmen is. I hope Watchmen recruits a whole bunch of people to the nerd side, and comics as well as the world are changed.
Or, that it's worth the nine bucks I'm paying for it. You know, the economic downturn and the top movie for a while being about a chihuahua...

JJ Abrams wrote Regarding Henry. I hope he brings that same edginess of Harrison Ford demanding Ritz crackers to the new Star Trek!

Xena Mon, Nov 17, 2008 at 04:29 PM EST

Star Trek, of course! Not that Watchmen didn't look interesting, but I'm a bit tired of all that noir look with the Matrix style slo-mo. Here's hoping JJ Abrams makes a movie that attracts a whole new generation of Trekkers (no pun intended) And, is it just me, or does that Rorshach character (sorry about the spelling) have that studid raspy voice that Batman had in The Dark Knight? It killed the intensity of the preview.

You really can't compare the two, they are completely different, but if I have to pick one... its Star Trek hands down.

I must go with Star Trek. I have been a fan since the mid-1970s. From what I have read, and after watching the trailer, it looks like J.J. Abrams has made an actual Star Trek movie - not an expanded television episode. I have always wanted to see Star Trek presented on the big screen in a grand, epic way. I believe it will finally happen.

But I will also see the Watchmen film. I look comic book movies. :)

Star Trek

I have to go with Star Trek. I'm excited about most of the cast--I absolutely love Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, and Simon Pegg. I'm only unsure about the new Kirk because I haven't seen him in anything before, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing since I hadn't seen the above three until I saw Heroes, LOTR, and Shaun of the Dead. I'm also more excited about Trek because of the teaming of JJ Abrams, Orci, and Kurtzman. I've been entertained by their work in the past, and this trailer looks promising.

I may see the Watchmen, but I agree with previous posts that it has a dark and depressing feel to it. After seeing these trailers, Trek definitely wins my vote.

I have to go with Watchmen. I've watched the trailer (and the previous one) so many times already, it gives me goosebumps. I love the graphic novel, and although 300 is not as good as I hoped it would be, I trust that Zack Snyder can keep to the spirit of the Watchmen. Although I do think that Star Trek will be great as well. I am a huge fan of the original Trek, and I think that J.J. Abrams will work wonders on the franchise. I just wish that I had been able to see these trailers on the big screen when I saw Bond this weekend, but my crappy Canadian cinema elected not to show them; instead I got to see such crap as Yes Man.

I'm not an ardent devotee to either film, but I saw both trailers in front of Quantum of Solace Friday night. I'm telling you, Mr. Slezak, people in the theater were absolutely floored once they realized this was a StarTrek movie versus a Star Wars sequel. When the StarTrek trailer ended there was ten kinds of excited whispering going on in the theater. This preview really revved up the audience. When the Watchmen trailer followed after it, nothing but dead silence. I think people were still taking in the StarTrek trailer. The Watchmen trailer came across as another Max Payne- lots of dark slow motion violence. There's a very depressing, hopeless energy surrounding the Watchmen promo I saw in the theater. I would definitely pass on Watchmen, if I had to make a choice between the two. When you make a trailer that has people talking (and yes, some obvious Trekkie fans clapping) at the end of the it, like the StarTrek trailer did, you've just struck a home run.

Star Trek. I've been a fan since Next Generation, so to see a new Star Trek movie has me over the moon. Watchmen looks alright, but the second trailer still hasn't convinced me of its greatness. It reminds me of 300 and everything I didn't like about that movie. I'll still see it, but Star Trek looks AMAZING.

PJ Mon, Nov 17, 2008 at 03:43 PM EST

Is there a reason why you can't like them both? Why start a stupid controversy. Oh yeah, because it's Slezak.

summerbaby Mon, Nov 17, 2008 at 03:41 PM EST

how can you pick just one?...I must be more of a geek than I thought...

Em Mon, Nov 17, 2008 at 03:38 PM EST

Abrams is a HACK! Watchmen, hands down.

Bryan Mon, Nov 17, 2008 at 03:22 PM EST

This is an impossibly tough call, I'm a comic book geek but I'm also half trekkie. Of course, I'm a full blown geek and know full well the new characterizations won't be the same (goodmoviebadmovie.blogspot.com) so I'm going to have to go with Watchmen if I had to choose between them.
