'Rosie Live' recap: Welcome to O'Donnell's surreal world

Nov 27, 2008, 01:48 PM | by Tanner Stransky

Categories: About Last Night

Rosieliveconanbaldwin_l

Live from New York... it was Rosie! Last night marked Rosie O'Donnell's return to television, and—my ohhh my—it was one of the most surreal shows to flash on my screen in a long time. A glittery Liza Minelli opening the show with a overblown rendition of "City Lights"? Check. Jane Krakowski striptease? Check. Pop-by cameos from Clay Aiken, Rachael Ray, and Harry Connick Jr.? Check, check, check. Literally, a gay old time was had by all. (Honestly, with additional appearances by Ne-Yo, Gloria Estefan, and Kathy Griffin, could the hour of television have been any gay-friendlier?)

And who's that there in the photo here with a pie on his face? None other than Conan O'Brien—a good sport if I've ever seen one. He got pied by—whaddaya know? another NBC star!—a very funny Alec Baldwin, who did a semi-ironic bit where he had to keep talking into Rosie's mic, which incidentally was attached right by her breasts. A bit like that could have gone into too-randy-for-8 p.m. territory, but I'm happy to report that it was anything but. After all, with this show, Rosie is attempting to get back to those "Queen of Nice" days of yesteryear, after her recent, rage- and politics-fueled stint on The View. With only one mention of politics (her screaming "BARACK OBAMA!" during the monologue), Rosie kept it all rather silly and light-hearted. Which was fitting in the crazy days we live in and, especially, on Thanksgiving eve. Overall, while the show was insanely surreal (remember, Liza was there!), I thorougly enjoyed seeing Rosie back on TV.

As a huge Kathy Griffin fan, my favorite part of the evening was her appearance as Nancy Grace, who was hell bent on taking Rosie to task. I don't usually see the comedian doing such dolled-up impressions, so that was quite the treat. Can she please be a regular on the show? Or maybe the solution is more installments of Life on the D-List.Or mini installments of D-List during future editions of Rosie Live! Yes, that's it!

Meanwhile—and not to be Grinch-y—but I sort of despised that overblown, too too closing number. Why'd Rosie need Gloria Estefan to do that weird holiday homage? And dancing desserts? Really? I realize these type of variety shows are supposed to be over-the-top and all, but save some of that camp for round two. Please.

Speaking of what I loved and hated, PopWatchers, what'd you love from Rosie Live last night? What'd you hate? Would you watch something like this weekly? Monthly? Do you think a show like this more about the guests—or about Rosie? Take a break from the leftovers and leave a comment or two!

I can't stand Rosie, She's disgusting. But I couldn't turn it off. I wouldn't let me wife change chanells. Totally enjoyed watching her crash and burn. Good by...Rosie. Stick a fork in your fat but, your done! It just kept getting worse. Even if you love her you know it was awful.

Diaster--no talent and a party.

scott Fri, Dec 5, 2008 at 02:21 AM EST

Come on Tanner!!!!! You had to be paid to write that. No fat, gay or left bashing here. The show was just plain awful. Look at the ratings. Yeah she got 5 million viewers (3rd from the bottom), but what I want to know is how many of those viewers threw their remote at the TV. No wonder there was a run on TVs at Walmart on Black Friday.

Karen Scott Thu, Dec 4, 2008 at 03:28 PM EST

Thank God for TV Land and Nick at Night!!!! Those are the only channels worth watching. Rosie's TV time has passed and she should realize it. She is no longer funny and just obsesses with being gay. Why do gays have to keep talking about it? We know you are gay and don't care. That is your choice and medical make up. As a straight person I have many gay friends but neither of us have to flaunt it in each others faces. We know and we don't care. Go on with life and live whatever lifestyle you choose. Leave it off TV.

Harry Connick should stick to acting because he's no Michael Buble? Are you HIGH???????

Tanner Stransky must be a blind AND deaf idiot...the show was horrible...this writer lacks all credibility

J Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 11:16 AM EST

Well, on the plus side, Rosie didn't bring up her theories on the show as to how the 9/11 attacks were all a big conspiracy!

kim Sun, Nov 30, 2008 at 05:40 PM EST

I couldn't have been more dissappointed with this show! I was looking forward to getting back to the great days of her talk show, but this show was surreal in the fact that this is what it is like to be in Rosie's head. The line up of stars could have been better. Beyonce, PCD, something to liven it up. Some of the acts were not interesting like the tap dancers. It would have been better if they had someone from SYTYCD. I have to admit I didn't watch the whole thing, so if some of those things happened, forgive me. I did tune back in to see Rachel Ray toting a "stuffed" turkey like it was a boy's toy airplane. Rachel, honey, noooo... This show could have been a lot better and I am willing to give Rosie a 2nd chance next year. See I still believe there's hope.

twinsfan Sun, Nov 30, 2008 at 04:37 PM EST

Did anyone watch Wayne Brady's variety show a few years ago? Now there is someone who understands what a variety show is supposed to be like. Wayne is awesome. Rosie--well, um, Wayne is awesome.

Hubert Sun, Nov 30, 2008 at 04:13 PM EST

Sorry Ro. Your show was a big bad loser! You were great behind a desk slinging toys into the audience but this song and dance format was NOT you. The hair, make-up, clothing made you look so uncomfortable. Why not hop on you boat and ride out into the sunset? Your entertaining days are over. Bye bye.

train wreck Sun, Nov 30, 2008 at 02:10 PM EST

Basically, that's what I thought of it. It was promoted as something for the entire family, so my husband and I turned it on with our two little boys. Minutes later, Rosie is talking about gay moms and dads and her breasts, topics clearly not meant for children. The whole show was an absolute embarrasment. I guess I'm not suprised that it tanked in the ratings.

to critic Sun, Nov 30, 2008 at 01:14 PM EST

You are correct. We need more great comedians like Topo Gigio.

brian Sun, Nov 30, 2008 at 10:32 AM EST

I was schannel surfing last night and caught Ellen's Big Show just as it started and ended up watching the entire show and was sorry it was only an hour long.If only Rosie had been so entertaining.Ellen was all about the Guests.Rosie was all about Rosie As a Rosie fan I TRIED watching her show,I really did but it was just too awful.I taped it and have finally managed to watch it....oh so bad.

hello?? Sun, Nov 30, 2008 at 07:58 AM EST

Hi Rosie, this is GE... yes, THAT offense contractor network... uh, Rosie, all's forgiven, actually we LOVE your political positions, we'd like for you to, uh, do a variety show for us the Wednesday night before Thanksgiving, but your budget can only afford "D" list stars and a handful of our own stellar (snort) NBC lineup. Rest assured, you'll get one-hundred percent support and backup from us on this project; we really want it to succeed. TRUST us. (Sound of hysterical howling laughter coming through a covered up phone mouthpiece). Yes, Rosie, we're still here. Can we count on you to come through for us Rosie and singlehandedly bring back live variety TV?

Rosie, you need to choose your friends and business parters FAR more carefully. And to all the GOP bloggers on here; don't you have a President-elect your time would be far better spent hating on than Rosie? Really, the hysterical personal attacks are way too transparent. Try critiquing the show.

Ringo Sun, Nov 30, 2008 at 07:28 AM EST

Rosie is a racist and I glad they are getting rid of her.

Pendragon Sun, Nov 30, 2008 at 02:23 AM EST

The problem with the idea of bringing back a good old fashioned variety show is that Rosie O'Donnell just doesn't measure up to the likes of Frank Sinatra, Nat Cole, Dean Martin, Doris Day, Frankie Laine, Perry Como, Patti Page, Dinah Shore, Judy Garland, et al., whose old variety shows were so enjoyable.

Now a variety show hosted by, and featuring performances by, someone like Jane Monheit or Michael Buble might actually have worked ...

Stephen Sun, Nov 30, 2008 at 02:14 AM EST

I just watched "Rosie Live" after being out of town. I was expecting a disastrous, god-awful show that was "painful to watch" and "cringe-worthy". I didn't feel that way though. Actually, I had the opposite reaction. Although the stage was too dark, the show was fun! It was tight with guests left and right. It had VARIETY on a variety show.... I don't get what the big fuss is about. I think some people just want Rosie to fail. Rosie, if you read this, please know... despite what others say, the show was great. Good for you for giving it your all.

critic Sun, Nov 30, 2008 at 01:36 AM EST

Where the show failed; conceding to NBC to be another incestuous promo for the network instead of what it needed to be to singlehandedly revive a dead format, a lineup of A-list (not D-list) "stars". Where was Madonna? Even Triumph the insult comic dog would have been better than Conan, sorry Conan. And hate to say it, but the show needed less Rosie and more real stars performing. She should have been an Ed Sullivan type host instead of the centerpiece guest star. And Clay Aiken? Thank GOD he didn't sing. Harry Connick should stick to acting, he's no Michael Buble and will never be. Kathy Griffin is the funniest woman comedienne in the world today? Ed Sullivan worked because he got real stars, week after week. It's a shame, Rosie could have made this work but its obvious with the Wednesday timeslot and the "help" from the suits at NBC, they wanted it desperately to bomb and bomb it did. Dick Clark couldn't even make Wednesday work. You need Sunday night at 8 PM. Duh.

sarah palin Sun, Nov 30, 2008 at 01:18 AM EST

Who really cares? We are still spending billions to a handful of corporations to provide services to our troops in Iraq, while the Iraqi government refuses to help with even a dime! And all you can do is watch tv and drool....

Such a shame Sat, Nov 29, 2008 at 09:09 PM EST

I used to love Rosie when she first started her morning talk show and I was a loyal viewer. Back then she was different. She was entertaining and fun to watch. As that show was coming to a close, she started to change. She started to become angry and bitter. No one wants to have someone elses point of view rammed down their throat. When most of us watch television or go to movies, we want to be entertained. Rosie stopped being entertaining.

Interested Sat, Nov 29, 2008 at 07:55 PM EST

I don't know why I'm so interested, but I've read all the reviews and comments I could find over the past few days. I was intrigued by the show for several reasons. I felt that the director, writers, producers and even Rosie were so out of touch with what a 21st century variety show could & should be that it seemed like a joke. I kept waiting for the REAL show to start. It was lit like an amateur video of a H.S musical. There wasn't a new joke or comedy bit in it with the exception of K. Griffin who was dreadfully misused. Rosie's singing was loud and forced. No one under 65 wants to see or hear Liza and the only reason they want to see her is because they can't hear her! Alec Baldwin looked like he took a nap in his ill-fitting clothes( even still he's great). With all the great talent in the world, this show was ill-conceived and frankly produced by extremely incompetent people.
I call it the "Michael Jackson Syndrome". Too many "yes men" - not enough objective oversight.

karen Sat, Nov 29, 2008 at 07:04 PM EST

To IT....obviously you have not learned to keep your mouth shut either

mexipino77 Sat, Nov 29, 2008 at 06:37 PM EST

it sucked. she had a great opportunity. but it sucked. the reason i like the idea of variety show is because it often showcases collaborations/duets with unlikely pairings, showcases lesser known talents from stage, tv and movies and just old school entertaining. also, host of a variety show should get out of the way. Rosie is not talented enough to mash up against some stars..she just got in the way.

TT Sat, Nov 29, 2008 at 06:12 PM EST

Rosie, Go HOME.
Everybody is tired tired of your mouth and nasty comments. Haven't you heard the old song--If You Can't say something nice--Keep your mouth shut!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Treelady Sat, Nov 29, 2008 at 06:09 PM EST

I can't stand her. I'm glad she bombed, she deserves it for having a big yapper.

StopHating Sat, Nov 29, 2008 at 05:58 PM EST

STOP HATING----The show wasn't the best variety show that was ever on. but it was NOT the worst. She deserves another chance, I would watch. stop hating all you haters

joanne Sat, Nov 29, 2008 at 05:51 PM EST

This turned out to be as predictable as I was afraid it would be. Political jabs, too many gay jokes and just too much Rosie. Over exposed Alex Baldwin again, stupid pie-in-the-face joke, not enough letting the entertainers do just that, entertain. Also, Clay Aiken stretching out his 15 minutes of fame with another gay-type appearance. Please, his People magazine gay confession was enough to last me for a long time.

Stick a fork in this show, it is done.

No respectable reviewer could have liked this show, I'm looking at you Tanner Stransky and Roger Friedman of Fox.

Teresa Sat, Nov 29, 2008 at 05:38 PM EST

I was actually embarrassed for Rosie. She looked uncomfortable in her clothes, her makeup and her stiff hair. She didnt look like Rosie. And could she have possible had anymore gay innuendos??? She looked miserable, put on,etc... I'm glad that she gave it a go though. I dont care for her, but she cant lay day and die or give up. Too staged and vulgar for my liking.

to Dolly Sat, Nov 29, 2008 at 05:22 PM EST

What drugs are you on. The successful variety shows focused on the guests?? Cher never focused anywhere but on Cher!!!!!

XOC Sat, Nov 29, 2008 at 04:56 PM EST

I turned it off when she didn't give Clay Aiken time to sing. What a waste of time and talent.

Ms. LeChatz Sat, Nov 29, 2008 at 11:56 AM EST

I thought the show was terrible. I may be straight, but I hate gay jokes, even if one is gay. One or two..okay. The theme of the show. Meh. Alec Baldwin's skit was silly. I didn't stay to watch Katty Griffith (no that is NOT a typo) because I cannot stand her.

All in all the show MAY have been acceptable and funny in 1963, but it's not 1963 any longer.

Boring, boring not funny show.

RABnTN Sat, Nov 29, 2008 at 11:56 AM EST

Hmmmm...wonder if it's a "first name thang?" Anyone remember a formerly funny "Roseanne"? Looks like "Rosie" is headed down the same path...loud, obnoxious, and not funny...go away, Rosie.

Mr. Hate Sat, Nov 29, 2008 at 11:12 AM EST

Big surprise, huh? Terrible programming. Rosie is Rosie. Blah.

raprilc Sat, Nov 29, 2008 at 10:01 AM EST

I thought the whole show was awful. Not entertaining in the least. I'd never watch it again.

Sat, Nov 29, 2008 at 09:16 AM EST

The WORST show I've ever seen

anon Sat, Nov 29, 2008 at 07:40 AM EST

First of all, where was the copy desk? Idiots, can't catch a typo in "Minnelli"? Secondly, Tanner is too kind--are you smiling through your own Whitestrips? You saw her backstage, didn't you, and felt guilty cause you really hated the show. So you said, "I know; I'll say it's surreal, which isn't really an insult, so I can get into her next show." EW, get a real critic. NBC: get a real entertainer to do a real show, instead of a big fat pig who makes jokes about her underwear.

Moonllama Sat, Nov 29, 2008 at 07:33 AM EST

I watched for the Conan sketch. I think Conan's hilarious, but the set up of this show was just so... awkward that it sucked the funny right out of him.

slstevens Sat, Nov 29, 2008 at 07:13 AM EST

I was watching Liza and Rosie's set with horrified fascination when my remote control had a seizure and changed the channel. I am a big Liza fan, but Rosie? Ugh.

val Sat, Nov 29, 2008 at 03:42 AM EST

I can't believe Rosie compared herself to Ed Sullivan and Carol Burnett. Ed and Carol were talented entertainers loved by all. Rosie is an egotistical, loud, and annoying woman. Her poorly rated show is proof that most people cannot stand her.

Sat, Nov 29, 2008 at 03:32 AM EST

Looks like NBC has officially cancelled it a few hours ago. They finally did something right. The ratings were horrible and the show was even worse. People just can't stand Rosie anymore.

beck Sat, Nov 29, 2008 at 02:13 AM EST

ok, i admit--at first i wrote a really harsh review of this show--but watching it again i see it's charm and whimsy--it was nostalgic, upbeat and fun

it ws NOT well directed, choreographed, lighting designed, or written

let someone else produce this show and fire the first team or give them a scolding and i bet it would improve--and where was teh costume mistress? most outfits looked ill-fitting and from the "wardrobe wants you to bring whatever you have at home that will suffice" mode

she deserved better--her daytime show as DYNAMITE for showcasing cutting edge talent and never hit sour note

maybe pre-tape from now on and only do live in a selected city promotional tour?

Chris Sat, Nov 29, 2008 at 01:49 AM EST

Somewhere, Donald Trump is laughing his rich a$$ off.

bean Sat, Nov 29, 2008 at 12:17 AM EST

i used to like rosie, and still do most of the time... but watching the first ten minutes made me wiggle and cringe... i was almost embarrassed for her. trying to hard and was not funny, don't know how anyone could have been entertained by most of it. I feel bad that it wasn't better!

rocky Sat, Nov 29, 2008 at 12:15 AM EST

Love Rosie, but this show sucked. Liza, Rosie duo painful to listen to. Jokes unfunny. One big NBC promo. Corny to the max. Dancing uninspired. Disappointment-total.

Laurie Fri, Nov 28, 2008 at 10:55 PM EST

Would not give Rosie the time of day. I used to like her before she turned into a ranting, raging lunatic. I think she is a piece of trash and her career is totally washed up. A huge HAS BEEN!

don peed Fri, Nov 28, 2008 at 10:44 PM EST

What does ANYONE see in such a NO-Talent,fat, ugly, piece of s--t as displayed by NBC; WHAT were they thinking.....Obviously NOT thinking; totaly unbelievable that ANY money was spent on such an atrocious attempt at comedy......!!!

Dani in NC Fri, Nov 28, 2008 at 09:47 PM EST

Although I am no longer a fan of Rosie's, I wanted this show to be good because I have fond memories of variety shows. I'm afraid that this poor excuse for one will turn the viewers off of the genre and convince networks not to take a chance on another one. Even the Nick Lachey/Jessica Simpson variety special on ABC was better than this.

critic Fri, Nov 28, 2008 at 08:04 PM EST

agree with the sensible people who thought the show was terrible. the worst were that the jokes were unfunny. i can't believe Rachel Ray would risk damaging her career with the bit she did. Like almost every part of this show irt was embarrasing for those on stage and unfunny to those in their living room. if you watched in a bar and had several drinks before and during the show may have worked for you.

missed it Fri, Nov 28, 2008 at 08:02 PM EST

is this streaming someone on the internet? i missed it and from all this would love to see it. Love Kathy Griffin and Liza, anyone know where it can be seen?

Polo Fri, Nov 28, 2008 at 08:00 PM EST

If one wanted to bring back the television variety show format, then one should have looked to The One...Cher! I'm sorry Rosie but no roses.

dljoseph Fri, Nov 28, 2008 at 07:59 PM EST

Rosie you need to look for something else to do in the media.

Mike A Fri, Nov 28, 2008 at 07:47 PM EST

I would not watch that b************** if they paid me. As far as I am concerned she burned every bridge she and her phony smile ever had!

Barb from Downingtown Fri, Nov 28, 2008 at 07:32 PM EST

I really hoped this would be a big boost in tough times...it was just another tough situation!!! Rosie needs some writers and some real talent! It was embarrassing!

Dani Fri, Nov 28, 2008 at 07:16 PM EST

The difference between Rosie and the hosts from the 70's variety shows is that those hosts had talent, whether it be singing, comedy or both. Rosie is all about her. She's like the person in the group conversation who always has to one-up everyone else. And I think the "nice" Rosie on her first show was all an act - maybe she should have won an award for that. She's very insincere, her smiles (rare as they are) are always fake, they never show in her eyes. Won't ever watch her in anything in the future.

Rosie used to be fun and funny - before she turned into a bitter, ranting, disloyal....ok, I'll say it, Psycho. This show proved that she can't go back to being the pre-View Rosie. Now that I think about it, I was in the audience (twice) of her am talk show and she treated the audience disrepectfully then. So who is the real Rosie? (BTW, I'm a liberal Democrat and I don't want her speaking for me!)

I saw the funny promos and figured the Live Show would be funny.

It was not funny. It was not entertaining (except for the Nancy Grace bit).
I suffered through 45 minutes and hit eject.
