Rolling Stone's 100 greatest singers list: Who's missing?

Nov 19, 2008, 12:30 PM | by Mike Bruno

Categories: Lists-o-rama!, Mariah Carey, Music

Arethafranklin_l Any "Best Whatever of All Time" list is certain to -- perhaps is actually designed to -- rile people up. Why is so-and-so ranked above such-and-such? How could you leave off [INSERT PERSONAL FAVORITE]? What idiots would pick so-and-so as the No. 1 of all-time? Rolling Stone's greatest 100 singers is no different, of course, though given that initial caveat that these lists are all impossible to do without receiving criticism, really, they did a pretty solid job.

First off, the list was compiled based on votes from artists, journalists, and "industry insiders," so the Stone staff has sort of passed the buck on any gripes. But methodology aside, it's hard to argue with Aretha Franklin at No. 1. (You really want to tussle with the Queen of Soul?) Also, merely defining the "Greatest Singers" is from the outset a subject of great debate (even here at EW.com). Do you mean vocal ability? If so, Mariah Carey (No. 79) should be up higher and Bob Dylan (No. 7) much lower. Are we talking about emotion and lyrical interpretation? If so, the Dylan-Carey ranking is pretty spot on. Performance? Then Prince (No. 30) and Michael Jackson (No. 25) need to be up higher. (Somewhere, John Lennon is smiling that he was placed above Paul McCartney.)

All that said, off the top of my head, I think leaving off Paul Simon is a mistake, and I would've liked to have seen Chris Cornell, Layne Staley, or Eddie Vedder join Kurt Cobain (No. 45) in representing the fine vocal work from Seattle's early-1990s hard rock scene. Women also seem to be underrepresented. Yes, Aretha was No. 1, but Tina Turner is the only other female in the top 20. And where's Sarah McLaughlin? P.J. Harvey? Ann Wilson? Joan Jett? Given that votes determined the outcome here, perhaps that is indicative of an unfortunate male-centric prevailing attitude in today's music biz.

What do you think of the list, PopWatchers? Who was left off? And what are the criteria that make a "great singer?"

John Bradley Mon, May 11, 2009 at 05:54 AM EST

Vibrato + volume. Try keeping up with Bonnie Raitt. I dare you.

Gord Horton Tue, Apr 14, 2009 at 11:05 AM EST

Where's Steve Marriott?!

george Mon, Feb 23, 2009 at 05:40 PM EST

DO NOT TALK BAD ABOUT BJORK!!..chris cornell aint here??i have no life thats why i'm even paying attention to this stupidity.I could care less what rolling stone thinks.Marvin is my favorite

george Mon, Feb 23, 2009 at 05:35 PM EST

ha ha ha ha ha..did someone request the guy from green day and kelly clarkson?? anthony kiedis??..oh you must be so young and tone deaf

bw Sat, Feb 21, 2009 at 07:01 PM EST

Mercury was not as good a singer as any of the all time great soul singers. NO WAY NO HOW. Marvin, Aretha, Sam, Al and many others would have sung circles around him.

IMO, Marvin Gaye was the greatest singer that ever lived. And I didn't realized Cobain was a better singer than Gladys Knight and Luthor Vandross. Thanks for clearing that up Rolling Stone.

Jake Fri, Feb 20, 2009 at 01:20 AM EST

Mercury should have been #1, he had one the best ranges ever from low bass to high alto, he was better than
Aretha. No one could ever copy his vocal style either, he was a category in his own

jay Thu, Feb 19, 2009 at 08:39 PM EST

No Vedder??? Rolling Stone is holding a grudge because Eddie wiped his ass with their mag at one of Pearl Jams concerts...

Joe Thu, Jan 29, 2009 at 10:55 PM EST

Speaking of women singers, anyone remember The Seekers of the mid 60's? Listen to Judith Durham and see where you'd put her on your list.

Vickie Fri, Jan 16, 2009 at 09:18 PM EST

PAUL MCCARTNEY kicks ass - and i just would have died if he was left off that list...
*his vocal range is just incredible...he really can do any style perfectly...(Here, There and Everywhere and Helter Skelter are the same person?!)*

- and i just love the joke about John Lennon laughing somewhere that he was put over Paul =)

istinbirajandira Mon, Jan 12, 2009 at 01:17 AM EST

Where's Anthony Kiedis?

Linda Sun, Jan 11, 2009 at 01:08 AM EST

Anne Murray should be on the top 100 list, too!

Linda Sun, Jan 11, 2009 at 01:05 AM EST

I cannot understand how Rolling Stone left PAUL SIMON off this list...unbelievable!

Muffy Sat, Jan 10, 2009 at 05:14 PM EST

Aretha was banging a Rolling Stone writer back in the day! That list was laughable!

Shank Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 01:18 PM EST

Kelly Clarkson has an AMAZING voice and should be top 5

Michael Jackson should be top 5

Chris Cornell should be top 50

Kurt Cobain should be 100, or not on the list. I guess if you are judging it on how well someone sings their genre he is good, but on singing ability... nah

Others off the top of my head
-Who is the lead singer of Abba?
-Billy Joe Armstrong
-Dave Grohl
-Justin Timberlake
-Kurt Nilsen
-Reba McEntire (sp?)

franco Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 03:13 AM EST

seriously, no celine at all? she could go top 10 easily on most peoples' lists. what a freakin joke guys, c'mon...

franco Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 03:09 AM EST

oh one more, where's arguably the greatest singer of her era, pat benatar? r.s. needs to get a life. don't even get me started on the hall of fame issue, that's such a joke...politics politics

franco Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 03:04 AM EST

here's a few they missed, i mean what the heck are these people on?
steve perry should be top 10, along with celine dion, who they completely left out! brad delp, lou gramm, dennis deyoung and tommy shaw, ann wilson, susanna hoffs, sting. this r.s. is a complete joke! where the hell is geddy lee? he should at least on the list out of respect. if you are going to put crap like mick jagger, bob dylan, prince, mj, and steven tyler on there, add the one and only ged. my 2 cents...

emlavern Sun, Jan 4, 2009 at 03:30 AM EST

Patsy Cline, Patsy Cline, Patsy Cline. Where is Patsy Cline? I know it has to be there so I must of just missed it.

johnny1243 Sat, Jan 3, 2009 at 04:15 AM EST

Dave Gahan? Souixie Souix? Robert Smith? Morrissey only in 92ed? Garbage.

Fred Sun, Dec 28, 2008 at 03:51 AM EST

Should include:
Ella Fitzgerald
Billie Holiday
Sarah Vaughn
Dinah Washington
Louis Armstrong
Linda Ronstadt
Diana Ross
Barbra Streisand
Dionne Warwick
Kelly Clarkson
Donna Summer
Chaka Khan
Frank Sinatra
Celine Dione
Shirley Bassey
Tom Jones
Judy Garland

Concerned Thu, Dec 25, 2008 at 01:30 AM EST

Depeche Modes lead singer Dave Gahan creates the best experience through his distinct voice and live show presence.! Where is he?

Sheri Fri, Dec 19, 2008 at 11:18 PM EST

BEN ORR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
BILLIE HOLLIDAY
ANN WILSON
FRANK SINATRA
BARBRA STREISAND
And give me a break about Aretha. Her "voice" sounds like nails on a chalkboard after a cigarette.

dave Wed, Dec 17, 2008 at 10:39 PM EST

If Tom Waits and Bob Dylan are on the list for their "vocal stylings" why not the defiant howl of the young Alice Cooper (circa 1973)?

Jason Sat, Dec 13, 2008 at 02:14 AM EST

chris cornell and fiona apple should be on the list and freddy mercury should be higher.

Eric Fri, Dec 12, 2008 at 08:39 AM EST

Leaving Linda Ronstadt out is a travesty -- k.d. lang, too. And, yes, the likes of Garland, Sinatra, Fitzgerald, Streisand and Piaf were the truly great singers of the 20th century.

Ross Snodgrass Thu, Dec 11, 2008 at 11:52 AM EST

Waylon Jennings all the way man...all the way!!!

Ross Snodgrass Thu, Dec 11, 2008 at 11:52 AM EST

Waylon Jennings all the way man...all the way!!!

Will Mon, Dec 8, 2008 at 03:32 PM EST

Am I the only one digs Bob Seger's voice. And Lyle Lovett?

Andy Leone Sat, Dec 6, 2008 at 05:45 PM EST

I'm a big fan of Smashmouth and I can't believe their lead singer wasn't on this list. Man!

Mike Jarembek Sat, Dec 6, 2008 at 05:44 PM EST

I may be alone on this one, but where the hell was Ricky Martin?

Mav Sat, Dec 6, 2008 at 05:42 PM EST

The list was okay, but far from perfect. The most glaring omissions to me were Layne Staley, Liam Gallagher and Chris Cornell. Judged on voice, Bob Dylan shouldn't have been anywhere near the top 50. And Freddie Mercury should have ranked higher, because no on in rock has ever sung as well as him.

This list is a complete joke. Steven Tyler 99? No Gillan, Coverdale, Dio, Stanley, not even Michael Bolton. Van Morrison and Bob Dylan were great songwriters but horrible singers.

bubba Fri, Dec 5, 2008 at 02:43 PM EST

Blkshepherd Thu, Dec 4, 2008 at 03:44 PM EST

Not only is the list of folks on there absolutely stupid but to leave notable singers off the list who have more than contributed some of the best music ever is just crazy. Clearly Rolling Stone has issues. I dont give a rats butt who they asked. How about asking the buying public since it was US that bought the music and spend our hard earned dollars! There are far too many folks that should not be on the list as well as left off. Also how can you rate certain singers like bob dylan whom have the time I could not make a word of what he saying? Janis Joplin? all that screaming and drugged most of the time? same with Jim Morrison? and you leave Ella, Streisand, even Diana Ross who may not be the strongest but clearly has a beautiful voice atleast back when she was with the supremes and in the early 70s 80s. But actually, it dosent even matter. We the Public Know who are the greatest singers of all time, not some magazine that everyone does not read.

EJR Wed, Dec 3, 2008 at 09:19 PM EST

What is the critera for "The Greatest Female Singer?" If you go by the modern Pop Era, it is Diana Ross, and still remains Diana Ross...not Aretha. You do not have 18 Number One Records; 22 Top 5; 26 Top 10; almost 25 Top 20, et. Ross was always more successful than anyone else over the past 44 years since she first charted in 1963, and charted last year in 2007.

Aretha is the white man's interpretation of what a black woman should look like, sing like and act like.

This list is "Much Ado About Nothing." RSM doesn't matter anymore as we will now have a black President

Vince Wilson Wed, Dec 3, 2008 at 08:23 AM EST

This is the kind of list that has to have an element of the poisioned chalice about it. Do we really believe for example that Aretha will think her achievement is that well thought out when she knows, looking at this list, that Barbra Streisand isn't even on it?. Not a true list of great singers more a popularity contest and shame on Rolling Stone for pandering to perceived notions of 'coolness'

Max Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 05:25 PM EST

Jim Morrison should definetly be higher than Michael Jackson. The only reason Michael should be higher than Morrison is if it was judged on performance. And leaving off Jeff Lyne (ELO), SRV, and Billy Joel? Ridiculous bullshit!!

Ali Sat, Nov 29, 2008 at 03:04 PM EST

remember though, this is a list of best SINGERS, not best VOCALISTS. ;)

i think Janis Joplin should of been in the top ten, her emotion in her songs are unmatchable.

Anna Sat, Nov 29, 2008 at 04:41 AM EST

Have now read all 100 singers on the list. Could we get Aretha Franklin (grossly over rated) and Mavis Staples to swap places.

Anna Fri, Nov 28, 2008 at 10:54 PM EST

I think Sam Cooke should have been above Elvis and Bob Dylan should have been much further down the list even though I am a Dylan fan.I heard that he was above Otis Redding on the list????!!! Were the people who comprised this list deaf? Haven't heard whether Van Morrison is on the list but he definitely should be and as far as I am concerned if Dylan made it into the top ten then he should have. Also what about some of the lead singers from the Temptations? If you ask me it's a stupid list. I suppose all the black gospel artists didn't even get a metion either. A load of rubbish if you ask me.

doug c Fri, Nov 28, 2008 at 04:29 PM EST

Lydia Pence-Coldblood and Minnie Ripperton and Roy Orbison should be much higher

Joe Thu, Nov 27, 2008 at 11:04 PM EST

oh, and Layne Staley should sooo be on there

Joe Thu, Nov 27, 2008 at 11:02 PM EST

where's Scott Weiland??? Chris Cornell?? Eddie Vedder?? John Rzeznik?? and Bob Dylan is an amazing songwriter, but he has no buisness being on a list of vocalists. and if Christina Agulara or whatever is on it then where's Amy Lee?

bwall001 Thu, Nov 27, 2008 at 04:31 PM EST

So Kurt Cobain is a better singer than Gladt Knight and Luthor Vandross. Oh really. And I'm sorry Beattle lovers, but Lennin IS NOT a better singer than Marvin Gaye who ranked at 6, should have been even higher. I'd put Gaye's vocals up against anyone's, including Aretha's.

Liam Wed, Nov 26, 2008 at 12:08 PM EST

Where the F--K is Brian Johnson

GlennWH Wed, Nov 26, 2008 at 07:31 AM EST

Who can it be that Ella Fitzgerald is not on the list? Or Billy Holiday? Riddle me that.

zukes Tue, Nov 25, 2008 at 12:59 AM EST

Midge Ure
Brian Ferry
Jon Anderson
Peter Gabriel
Pat Benatar

Garry Mon, Nov 24, 2008 at 10:15 AM EST

Who is Bjork? Seriously.

And how could Linda Ronstadt be over looked?

Grulg Sat, Nov 22, 2008 at 07:52 PM EST

I thought Lou Gramm should have been on there, along w/ Phillip Soul Wynne (Spinners) and Olivia Newton John. Yeah I know sue me.

Grulg Sat, Nov 22, 2008 at 07:52 PM EST

I thought Lou Gramm should have been on there, along w/ Phillip Soul Wynne (Spinners) and Olivia Newton John. Yeah I know sue me.

Susanne Fri, Nov 21, 2008 at 10:19 PM EST

I thought Ben Orr of The Cars was a glaring omission. Talk about a voice synonymous with New Wave. And Billy Joel, on the strength of "Vienna" and "She's Always a Woman" alone, should have been a shoo-in. He was an elector; sure hope he voted for himself at least.

Tyja Berrenguer-Benson Fri, Nov 21, 2008 at 10:18 PM EST

I know the list is flawed! If Aretha is No.1 then her musical daughter ,and someone whom Aretha admires greatly should have shared that no.1 spot with her if not No.2 & that's the great Chaka Khan! Chaka has influenced more singers Black,White, male or female than even Aretha!chaka can sing anything from Rock to Country & every genre in between.Quincey Jones doesn't even care for many female vocalists, but adores Chaka & dubbed her "Americas Premier Vocalist".From her incredible all chest voice range(No falsetto),her flawless intonation, interpetive genius, perfect pitch, vocal colouring, attitude, vocal agility,& a host of other technical & creative skills this vocal genius possesses too numerous to mention,it is a slap in the face to music itself to negate her contributions to it!I will always look at those lists as jokes from now on!

Orlando Fri, Nov 21, 2008 at 09:54 PM EST

Well is ironic not to have Frank Sinatra, Madonna and Celine Dion... how can singers such as Michael Jackson and Christina Aguilera could be better than them..... They are much better singers than them... This list contradicts, because RS put Madonna the thrid most influential singer of the 80's and Sinatra the 2 of the 50's

max Fri, Nov 21, 2008 at 01:49 PM EST

Hmmm... No dionne warwick. that's pretty strange. And Gladys knight and Stevie nicks bareley made the list. Who are the idiots running this list?

JJ Fri, Nov 21, 2008 at 01:44 PM EST

No Diana Ross? That's weird. And I don't think i saw carole king! How can you not include carole king!?

Jonathan Strum Fri, Nov 21, 2008 at 12:18 PM EST

How about Darryl Hall, Maurice White, Meatloaf or Ronald Isley.

Jason Fri, Nov 21, 2008 at 02:14 AM EST

I can think of others left off, but 2 that I was appalled by were Fiona Apple and Chris Cornell.

Donna Fri, Nov 21, 2008 at 02:10 AM EST

Where the hell was Judy Garland? Hello! Barbra Streisand! Hello! Connie Francis hello! To have Christina Aguilera on the list before these three legendary women is an insult. I'm especially bothered by Judy Garland's omisssion. She was the greatest entertainer of the 20th century and no one could emote her lyrics better.

Pico Fri, Nov 21, 2008 at 01:38 AM EST

So happy to see the great Levon Helm on the list. A mighty voice.

Fri, Nov 21, 2008 at 12:37 AM EST

NO BILLY JOEL?!?!

anonymous Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 09:38 PM EST

I think a lot of the modern choices are way off. I would put on Joanna Newsom (yes she should be there), Fiona Apple, Tunde Adebimpe, Brian Eno. Brian Wilson should also be way better ranked.

Will Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 08:40 PM EST

Oh yea, and Mike Patton of Faith No More and Mr. Bungle? This list SILLY!

Will Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 08:36 PM EST

Maynard of Tool should definitely be on this list. Maybe Dave Davison from Maps and Atlases, Johnny Craig of Emarosa fame. And Eddie Vedder. I demand a recount!

Dustin Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 08:25 PM EST

Roger Daltrey/Pete Townshend needed to be there somewhere

Casey Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 07:12 PM EST

Here are just a few they missed:
Eddie Vedder
Tom Petty
Alanis Morissette
Keith Urban
Dave Matthews
Dave Grohl
Madonna
Faith Hill
Ann Willson
Fiona Apple
David Byrne

Why are Axl Rose, Kurt Cobain, Christina and Bob Dylan on here? The others mentioned are just as deserving.
Oh, well....

Howell Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 06:48 PM EST

I'd rather listen to a mix tape of the artist left off the list.

Track List:
Billy Joel - New York State of Mind
Ella Fitzgerald - I Got It Bad and That Ain't Good
Streisand - Don't Rain on My Parade
Sinatra - You Brought A New Kind of Love
Dionne Warwick - Theme Valley of Dolls
Donna Summer - All Through the Night
Mama Cass - Dream a Little Dream
There are so many more greater ones than represented on RS list

carlo Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 04:50 PM EST

u guys r a bunch of christina haters.celine dion herself even said that christina aguilera is probably the best vocalist out right now. go to youtube and she actually copied christina's vocals from it's a man's world. let me know if mariah carey can copy christina's vocals. i think every pop female singer knows that christina can blow mariah out of the water. if u don't agree then you're in denial.

Ken Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 04:26 PM EST

Where is Chris Robinson of the Black Crowes?? The guy's got a fantastic bluesy/soul voice, writes great lyrics and sings for the most rock and roll rock and roll band on the planet!!

chris Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 04:26 PM EST

No Mama Cass?
No Billy Joel?
What a bunch of losers Rolling Stgone is.

Stephanie T. Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 03:55 PM EST

No David Coverdale, Ian Lloyd, Steve Winwood or Ray Davees?

Zawmer Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 03:46 PM EST

Rolling Stone lists like this, regardless of who voted, are always a terrible indicator of who and what are really the best in music. A perfect example of how unnecessary music journalism usually is.

Annie Lennox and Stephen Tyler should have been much higher on the list. Chris Cornell, Brad Delp, and Ann Wilson should be on the list. These are singers that can do things that you, the person reading this, cannot do. On the other hand, you can totally do that singing-type stuff that Bob Dylan does.

Rebecca H Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 03:41 PM EST

Karen Carpenter more than deserved to be on that list. Also Pat Benatar, Stevie Nicks, Ann Wilson, Sheryl Crow, Celine Dion, Chrissie Hyde,Debbie Harry, Sarah MacLachlan, Janet Jackson, Belinda Carlisle, The Judds, Dusty Springfield, Tammy Wynette, Patsy Cline, Martina McBride, Faith Hill, Reba  McEntire, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Amy Grant, Gloria Estefan, Mary J Blige.

Hannah Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 03:31 PM EST

I demand that Fiona Apple be placed on this list. Immediately.

patty Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 03:17 PM EST

where's manilow?

sarah j Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 03:07 PM EST

Hey Wil - Whitney Houston is on the list.

Sinatra, Streisand, and Eddie Vedder should have been on the list.

Erin Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 02:58 PM EST

Richard Ashcroft!

Katie Camosy Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 02:50 PM EST

Frank Sinatra! Where's the Chairman on this list?

I expand upon my frustration on my blog about it: http://www.zoom-in.com/blog/2008/11/100-greatest-singers-all-time

It certainly is fun to hate lists, isn't it? x

Dan Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 02:49 PM EST

Women are DEFINITELY underrepresented. After Aretha, at number one granted, there are very few until the later numbers. Rolling Stone is notorious for ignoring and mimimizing female artists and this list is no exception. Where indeed are pj harvey, Gillian Welch, Big Mama Thornton, Diana Ross, Emmylou Harris, Donna Summer, Laura Nyro, Roseanne Cash, Sheryl Crow, Sarah McLachlan, Tori Amos, Natalie Merchant, Marianne Faithful, Patty Griffin, Chrissie Hynde, Rickie Lee Jones, Dionne Warwick, Debbie Harry, Bette Midler, Lucinda Williams, kd lang, KATE BUSH for crying out loud!! I think it is kind of disgraceful that their magazine seems still stuck in the "only boys rock" era which is wrong, outdated and totally sexist.

ark Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 02:33 PM EST

Where's Celine Dion?

Karl Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 01:26 PM EST

This list is so-so. I agree that Aretha should be #1 and happy to see Sam Cooke and Otis Redding in the top 10, especially since they have been dead for over 40 years. I would have ranked Prince and Johnny Cash higher simply because of their influence but for the most part the Top 25 or 30 is reasonably good. However, the omissions of Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Levi Stubbs, Nancy Wilson, Chaka Khan, Tony Bennett, Ella Fitzgerald, Ronald Isley, Mavis Staples, and Teddy Pendergrass are frankly shocking. It would be interesting to see who missed the cut.

Roland Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 12:48 PM EST

Women always get the shaft on RS lists> Annie Lennox and Stevie Nicks barely made the list, while Chaka Khan, Chrissie Hynde and Ann Wilson are left off altogether?

becca Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 12:39 PM EST

MICHAEL JACKSON SHOULD HAVE BEEN HIGHER!!! OTIS REDDING SHOULD HAVE BEEN HIGHER!!!!

Gina Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 12:38 PM EST

J.R Richards of Dishwalla!!!

Mia Wallace Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 12:37 PM EST

Dusty Springfield?

erik Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 12:18 PM EST

why do we even care what rolling stone says nowadays? arent they a political magazine? i havent read an issue of rolling stone since i noticed those lame comic strips underneath the editorial letters in the front of the mag. besides, no maynard from tool, no deftones, no antony......hell, they shouldve included those jonas brothers, then id have something to laugh at.

Matty Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 12:15 PM EST

No Levi Stubbs? Ridiculous.

JOE LIOI Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 11:44 AM EST

WHERE IS DARYL HALL?

jay Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 11:41 AM EST

I'm happy Bjork is on the list, but I also think it is absurd that Christina Aguilera is higher up than Mariah Carey. I mean, you've really gotta be joking.

jfhdsui Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 11:33 AM EST

aretha franklin, in addition to being a sow, is completely overrated. i have just never gotten the admiration for her.

Garry Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 11:23 AM EST

I'd put John Lennon even closer to the top of the list than he is--he KNEW how to sing rock & roll better than anyone.

Ann Wilson definitely deserves a spot high on the list, but where's PAT BENATAR? Or KATE BUSH?

And, to Stephanie T.: Susanna Hoffs was not the lead singer of the Bangles--Columbia records chose to release only her lead vocals as singles, which led to the group's breakup. The group's vocals were actually evenly divided. And Hoffs wasn't even the best singer in the group.

scott Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 11:15 AM EST

rolling stone has cemented itself as a joke. when they did this for guitar players, the guys from pearl jam, mccready especially, were excluded... and they were shamed into admitting a mistake. No eddie vedder on this list? really?

Corporate Magazines Still Suck.

Patrick Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 11:06 AM EST

Where the H*** is WEIRD AL YANKOVIC??!!
