Who (or what) is on your Must List?

Nov 19, 2008, 12:55 PM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: 'The Mentalist', Must List

Some of my colleagues think I'm crazy, but I'm currently obsessed with Robin Tunney's terrific performance on CBS' freshman crime procedural The Mentalist. The way her Teresa Lisbon gloats just a little bit whenever she informs local law enforcement that she and her CBI team are taking over a crime scene. The hint of concern she shows for Simon Baker's troubled Patrick Jane whenever his ill-fated family is mentioned. The fact that she can go from crabby to bemused to totally focused on her work all in the course of a brief scene. Yes, people, if you haven't caught Tunney's work on one of the few undisputed hits of the TV season, set your DVRs! (Or just catch the clip embedded below.)

What about you, PopWatchers? Give us a clue about what's on your Must List this week by listing up to three items from current TV/movies/music/books/games/online. Don't forget your e-mail address, in case we decide to use your submission in the magazine. Deadline is Thursday, Nov. 20, at 10 a.m. ET.

Monic Mon, Nov 24, 2008 at 09:44 AM EST

My must watch list still remains as Life and must watch character is Dani Reese and Quantum of Solace as must watch movie.

Jennifer Fri, Nov 21, 2008 at 03:23 PM EST

1. David Cook's new CD. Definitely a CD rhat rewards multiple listens. Lie, Bar-ba-sol, Declaration, Permanent---all very different, but all very good.

2. I've got to second everyone on Chuck. It's become appointment TV this year.

Eirinn Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 09:51 PM EST

I agree with Adam Baldwin from Chuck, he is great in his role!

Right now, Life, Life on Mars, Smallville (BEST SEASON EVER!) and the great Angels vs. Demons battle (and Jensen Ackles!) on Supernatural.

Kelly Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 04:26 PM EST

Adam Baldwin from Chuck. I swear the man gets funnier every week.
Also, the woo girls from HIMYM. You got to love this show!

Sam Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 10:37 AM EST

Taylor Kitsch on Friday Night Lights. He stole every scene he was in, and his reaction shot full of pride and sadness and wistfulness at the end of Wednesday's episode upon seeing his best friend move beyond him... wow. Subtle, touching, and perfect. I'm still crying.

Sam Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 10:36 AM EST

Dave Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 09:57 AM EST

1.) Always Sunny season finale.

2.) The Time Machine: Interactive adventure on youtube was A-mazing. Found it on the front page over the weekend... i think it's Chad, Matt & Rob who made it.

3.) WALL-E DVD release. By far the best movie I've seen in forever.

Sara Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 09:40 AM EST

I like the Mentalist a lot. Robin Tunney will always be "the patient from the first episode of House" to me. Simon Baker is sooo pretty. Unfortunately, with the exception of the Asian guy, you could probably swap out the other castmembers and I wouldn't notice, though.

Big Bang Theory = win. I usually watch it by myself first, and if it's good, I save it for my boyfriend. I wholeheartedly second the Jim Parsons love, he's brilliantly hilarious.

Dusty Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 03:12 AM EST

TV:
-Always Sunny season finale. It's a crime that this show has such short seasons!
-Moral Orel Series Finale. The third and final season has been nothing short of brilliant. It's a crime that this show is getting cancelled for not "fitting in."

Podcast: Ugly Betty! Michael Urie and Becki Newton are hilariously adorkable. And now they're even going to start answering fan-submitted questions - though I'm sure reading "will you guys be my best friends?!?!?" will get old after a while.

R.J. Kemp Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 12:30 AM EST

I did wanna see Twilight, but all the hype killed it for me. Here's my list:

1) The Dark Knight Score - got disqualified for the oscars on account of too many people on it or something, which sucks because it was probably one of the most innovative Hollywood scores of the past couple years.

2) "Time Machine" - The coolest youtube video(s) ever, period. The story stops and lets you decide which direction you want it to go, giving you multiple options right inside the video itself. It's a rare piece of genuine entertainment online. Side note... my son loved watching this (over and over)!

3) The Office - Stephen Merchant (one of the creators of the original British 'Office" series) directed this weeks episode. It had a lot of charm and genuinely complicated emotional moments.

Teghan Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 11:01 PM EST

1)Lance Reddick on 'Fringe'
2)Robert Downey Jr
3)GHOST WHISPERER!!!!

bonash Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 10:55 PM EST

yum, yum, Daniel Craig! yum, yum!

Donald Bay Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 10:02 PM EST

In no order:
1) Role Models!
2) Twilight!
3) and despite all the arguing about who knows what on here...that Time Machine interactive thing on YouTube was pretty sweet!!

Michelle Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 10:00 PM EST

Joel McHale!!! The Soup is consistently the funniest show on tv- due in large part to its hilarious host

queen of disrepair Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 09:58 PM EST

1) Early buying of fabulous Christmas ornaments. For some reason, I am determined to hand something of off every branch on my lovely tree.
2)James Taylor's "Covers" album - several people have already told me how they can't wait to get one- I've already Santa-ed up on their gifts.
3) Practicing Reiki - if you've never heard about it, research and find someone who can teach you. The most wonderful sense of connectedness and calming method of meditation and healing.
4) trying to decide what five items go on my xmas wish list.

Raven_Moon Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 09:05 PM EST

1) "Tropic Thunder" on DVD-Robert Downey Jr is hilarious!
2) "WALL-E" on DVD-I love that cute little robot!
3) "Twilight" (this Friday!)

Robin Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 08:58 PM EST

Chuck webisodes on NBC.com. The extra Buy More scenes are so funny.

Nix Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 08:05 PM EST

Band of Brothers came out on Blu-Ray this past week and you should all buy it. It's a master class on writing, adaptation, production and acting, WITH HOT GUYS. oh and war and history and philosophical musings and all that too, but mostly a) brilliant work of art and b) HOT GUYS.

Jul Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 06:39 PM EST

I would have to go with Sacha Baron Cohen as the Must of the week. His prank on the set of "Medium" only makes me more excited about the up-coming Bruno-movie. His catwalk appearance at the fashion week was already hilarious. I know, there is more to come and we should all be prepared.

Bow73 Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 06:39 PM EST

I wholeheartedly agree with your Must See re Robin Tunney. I think her performance is great. Very understated and a great counterpoint to Simon Baker's excellent Patrick Jane. I am also happy to a see similar understated performance by Anna Torv in Fringe. I think both actresses are doing a great job.

Gina Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 06:34 PM EST

"It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" season finale. Period.

Jessica S. Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 06:31 PM EST

David Cook's self-titled, major label debut = love!
~Did anything else happen this week?

Oh yeah, Twilight on Friday!!!

Scout Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 05:54 PM EST

To Patty - Paul Rudd was darn good on SNL, and I have to say as much as I might not want to like Justin Timberlake, the kid is just plain talented. The Weekend Update bit was great, but I had to go back and watch the Single Ladies bit several times and laughed through each one.

Nathan Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 05:52 PM EST

VIDEO: Wall-E on Blu-Ray, not DVD.

MUSIC: Love is All - A Hundred Things Keep Me Up at Night.

billybobsnortin Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 05:48 PM EST

I have recently discovered and became quickly obsessed w/ singer JAMES MORRISON.
His 2 albums are great and he will be a big star soon.

Patty Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 05:46 PM EST

I also have to mention Paul Rudd. After seeing Role Models and him hosting SNL, I have go back watch some of his classics like Anchorman, Clueless and of course Wet Hot American Summer. "You taste like a burger. I don't like you anymore."

Patty Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 05:36 PM EST

It's a guilty pleasure, but I'm addicted to 'Sylista'. I just love the fact that Megan is such a know it all biotch, all the while her hair is greasy, her clothes look horrible on her and she has a huge cluster of zits right smack in the middle of her forehead.

Scout Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 05:27 PM EST

Couldn't watch Robin Tunney on Prison Break, can't watch her now. Drives me insane.

Celebrity Rehab - Dr. Drew is beyond words.

Second (third?) Jim Parsons and the whole BBT crew - for a show that was panned early on, it's really become a gem.

Also must admit to a little inability to tune out Eleventh Hour - that Rufus Sewell is just smoldering hot.

Ian Phillips Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 05:22 PM EST

The "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" season finale (tear) deserves a mention. Entitled "Nightman Cometh", the finale promises the return of Dayman and the Nightman. Long time fans and newer ones rejoice in what is likely to be comedy history in the making.

Becky Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 05:17 PM EST

St. Lola in the Fields.
I loved them before their music was used in One Tree Hill, but I'm welcome to share the wealth!

Lady K Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 05:15 PM EST

The top of my Must List is "Sons of Anarchy" which is my only "must" of the 2008 TV season. It is so much of a must that I seek it out in friend's house on Wednesday nights due to continuing cable problems at home. Luckily, FX has already announced a second season, and I am prowling the web looking for the first season DVD release date. Second on the Must list is counting the days until 25 Nov when I can purchase Kim Harrison's "Outlaw Demon Wails" in paperback. The latest Rachel Morgan is supposed to be the best yet. Finally, pre-ordering Mamma Mia! on DVD. It was the most fun I had at the theatre this summer, especially the Sing-A-Long Version.

ia Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 04:36 PM EST

At the top of my Must List is "Lost," "Lost," and "Lost." Second, reruns of "The X-Files."
These two TV shows are original...no other shows come close. Not even "Fringe."

Carly Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 04:32 PM EST

Jim Parsons of The Big Bang Theory is the funniest person on TV. He is the man.

snarky Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 04:26 PM EST

I agree with the Joel McHale love - where else could I have seen "Spaghetti Cat"???? I am also in love with pandora.com - it is a site that plays music based on your taste - type in a fave artist/song and it plays other songs you will love - I have the Madonna channel, the Billy Joel channel - you get the idea.

Amanda Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 04:12 PM EST

How I Met Your Mother- Jason Segel in a pink cowboy hat, woo girls, Sven, and NPH what is not to love about this show!
Joel McHale
Screw Twilight and Bond have you seen Role Models yet?

Reece Bennett Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 04:02 PM EST

I vote for Joost. I just learned how to cook the perfect turkey from a DIY web video: http://www.joost.com/home?playNow=321jlht Thanksgiving has been saved!

Zig Sertyan Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 03:49 PM EST

pwned! is it too early to put "24"?

Captain Obvious Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 03:45 PM EST

still you

creeptard da plumber Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 03:44 PM EST

Hey captain... you spelled the word are wrong. It's not spelled AE, idiot! whose the inbred moron now?

Captain Obvious Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 03:41 PM EST

Creeptard (which is apparently the words "creepy" and "retard" squashed together? good one)... if you didn't get it from the barrage of information, the time machine being referred to is some youtube video that I bet is a lot cooler than your stupid "time machine" that you "invented". you ae obviously the product of inbreeding, which if you are too dim to understand, is a pretty nasty insult. I suggest you shudder in offense as I've insinuated that your parents are also siblings and go sit at home, watch the mentalist and leave the internet in relative peace.

Thank you for your understanding,
Captain Obvious

PS - If you need further clarification feel free to ask me to explain any or all of this message in simpler language.

creeptard da plumber Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 03:31 PM EST

Who are you even talking about Captain Obvious? Who is this "creeptard tha plumber"? Do you always insult imaginary persons?

Captain Obvious Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 03:29 PM EST

Creeptard Tha Plumber is a moron!

creeptard da plumber Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 03:28 PM EST

you're all stuepid!! I have a time machine and if you videotaped it and put it on youtube I will sue you! I have the copyright and you are all infringers!!! I vote for the Time Machine that I invented in my basement with my bare hands!!!! MMMUUAHH AHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHA AHAHA HA HAH AHAH AHA HAHAH AH AHHA HA AH HA HA HA AHA AHAHHA H HA!!!

SCYMPTAR16 Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 03:22 PM EST

dude, youtube sucks! get away from your stupid computers and watch the mentalist. dammitz

Torin Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 03:22 PM EST

The entire cast of The Shield. I know that they'll all get snubbed come Emmy time, but every performance is outstanding.

I also second Joel McHale.

countessa Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 03:21 PM EST

what the frig is this time machine thing? and mentalist sucks!

brian Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 03:19 PM EST

on tv, it's always sunny in philly rules! charlie day is genius. Oh, and I saw that Time Machine choose-yer-adventure-y vid too! when I saw it i was like omg, youtube just got better! didn't think that many people seen it. awesome tho!

Laura Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 03:11 PM EST

I agree with the other peeps -- "The Time Machine: An Interactive Adventure" is addicting as hell!

Sarah Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 03:07 PM EST

You MUST check out "The Time Machine: An Interactive Adventure". It's so fun, i can't stop watching/playing it!!! thanks Chad, Matt, Rob & Jonah!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l8rJ1WML60Y

Sam Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 03:05 PM EST

I'm throwing "The Time Machine: An Interactive Adventure" out there too! It was so rad! Chad Matt & Rob kick ass!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l8rJ1WML60Y

Cara King Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 03:00 PM EST

TAMARA TAYLOR as Cam on "Bones." Half the laughs on the show nowadays are due to Cam, whose dry, understated delivery turns every line into gold.

Tisha Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 02:53 PM EST

I concur with those below. I highly recommend checking out Chad, Matt and Rob's THE TIME MACHINE (choose your own adventure video) at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l8rJ1WML60Y

G Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 02:53 PM EST

Sure it's been out for nearly two weeks now, but what about Pink's latest, the awesomely raw Funhouse? She lets out everything from her inner rocker to her inner songwriter in a CD that ranges from full blown drums to simple piano and guitar songs. Even if she doens't make your must list,so what? She's still a rockstar.

peaches Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 02:51 PM EST

Paris HIlton's My New BFF is a reality television trainwreck of the highest order. Watching Princess P torment potential besties like stuck up spokes model Bikini Corey and the sloppy drunk granddaughter of Clark Gable Kayley is pure guilty pleasure gold. A recent elimination even took place in a jacuzzi! What more do you need?

Sara Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 02:40 PM EST

Joel McHale on the Soup on E!. He is just so hilarious and smart while he makes fun of these ridiculous things from other TV shows.

pumpkinandy Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 02:37 PM EST

Fringe!
And, consistently cringe-worthy One Tree Hill!
Plus, the booze-swilling Grandma on 90210.

Charles Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 02:18 PM EST

If you haven't seen "The Time Machine" yet, it was featured on the front page of youtube. It's an interactive adventure where you click within the video to choose where the direction of the story goes. It's made by Chad, Matt & Rob... youtube.com/chadmattandrob

denny Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 02:17 PM EST

BURN-E.
I mean, yes, WALL-E on DVD is awesome, but this short encapsulates everything that was great about the best movie of the year into a nice little (incredibly cute, robotic) pacakge.

Krista Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 02:09 PM EST

I'm throwing "The Time Machine: An Interactive Adventure" out there again. It's the most innovative thing I've seen online for a long while and I'll bet it's the beginning of new era for YouTube videos.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l8rJ1WML60Y

ccross Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 02:05 PM EST

I vote for Chuck--first Chuck lays one on Casey in a misguided attempt to save his life, then Casey hits a high "C" without batting an eyelash. And let's not forget DJ Casey in the reunion episode. Adam Baldwin's comedic chops are seriously underrated. I love that little caveman growl he does as the occasional reaction shot.

Matt Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 02:03 PM EST

Can there be a "Must Not" List? And can we put Twilight on it? Seriously, EW - enough is enough.

Zee Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 01:58 PM EST

The Mentalist is at the TOP of my must list. Last night's episode was ridiculously good.

Jenn Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 01:52 PM EST

Jim Parsons on The Big Bang Theory - this guy absolutely deserves an emmy nod. "Rock-paper-scissors-lizard-Spock" oh yeah!

Catherine Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 01:51 PM EST

"Skins" on BBC America. It's semi-subtitled for those with a tin ear for Brit accents, and just as much snogging as "Gossip Girls."

Katie Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 01:45 PM EST

How I Met Your Mother.. NPH, you rock my world.

Dennis N. Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 01:44 PM EST

"cheftestants"! Awesome.
Also, I hereby request a moratorium on the phrase "_____ gold." Nothing (with the exception of Michael Phelps' torso) can be gold. It's done.

Dennis N. Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 01:43 PM EST

Tomb Raider Underworld for 360/PS3/Wii/PC. Not since TRII has a Lara Croft adventure been so innovative, breathtaking, and downright fun to play. I've always been rooting for Lara to be relevant again, and Underworld's finally put her back in the game (pun completely and shamelessly intended).

strickens_girl Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 01:31 PM EST

The return of Top Chef. I'm always thrilled to see what the cheftesants will come up with next.

Shelby Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 01:29 PM EST

Tropic Thunder Unrated DVD. From the insane but relevant extras to the movie itself, I was on the floor laughing for hours.

southerngal Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 01:21 PM EST

must list - chuck! this week's hi-c by casey - comedy gold.

paula Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 01:18 PM EST

David cooks cd and the new trailer of Harry potter

Lynny Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 01:18 PM EST

Jim Parsons on "The Big Bang Theory"- seriously, he is emmy worthy. Hee lair ee us.

Elizabeth Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 01:16 PM EST

Alison Becker, who hosts the remaining video countdown alive (on VH1) and who is part of Kenny Mayne's new little show on ESPN.com. I miss Amir and Rachel, but she's growing on me.

ccross Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 01:11 PM EST

Mentalist WAS on my Must-List every week, until CBS pulled the ol; bait 'n switch by yanking the episodes offline (along with 11th Hour) as soon as it looked like being a hit. I watch all my telly online because our VCR got busted in a recent move and we don't have a DVR, so now I've missed several episodes. Way to attract more viewers, CBS.

Seth Finck Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 01:08 PM EST

Margot and the Nuclear So and So's Animal/Not Animal

One of my favorite records of the year comes from these Indianapolis Rockers. It's great music for these cool autumn days and the cold winter ones ahead.
