Harry Potter: Weigh in on 'Half-Blood Prince' trailer

Nov 19, 2008, 09:00 AM | by Adam B. Vary

Categories: Film, Harry Potter, Movie Trailers

Finally! After a teaser trailer that focused solely on a chilling glimpse of the young Tom Riddle, and an international trailer that featured some Ron Weasley snogging and a lot of blink-and-you'll-miss-it action, the first full trailer for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is upon us. It's embedded below; take a look and then make like Harry and Dumbledore and apparate past the jump to discuss. (For non Potter-heads -- all 16 of you -- that translates to "click on the jump link and then we'll talk about trailer.")

We open with this totally brills exchange between Harry and the Hogwarts Headmaster:

Dumbledore: [Closing in with Harry on a mysterious house] You are, of course, wondering why I brought you here tonight.
Harry: Actually, sir, after all these years, I just sort of go with it.

Well played, Daniel Radcliffe, well played.

Then we meet professor Horace Slughorn (played by Jim Broadbent, a pretty great piece of casting even if I personally was pulling for Bob Hoskins in the role), the new potions master who introduces Harry's class to a love potion that seems to make its way into Ron's bloodstream. Coupled with the moment (also featured in the internat'l trailer) when Hermione whacks Harry in the head for calling himself "the chosen one," it's super great to see Harry's two bestest friends (and the actors who play them) getting some meaty screen time after spending so much of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix on the sidelines. Quickly, though, the fun comes to a halt, with Hermione in tears, the Dark Mark ominously hovering over Hogwarts, and Voldemort's Death Eaters terrorizing central London. Fans of the books know Half-Blood Prince contains some of the series' most lighthearted and harrowing moments, and this first robust look at the film makes it seem like returning director David Yates is walking that line quite nicely.

What do you think, Popwatchers? Does the extra time the filmmakers have had for the visual effects -- like the "memory fog" inside Dumbledore's Pensieve or quick glimpse we got of Quiddich -- look like it's paying off? Are you as slightly unnerved by how buff Rupert Grint looks in that green tank top as I am? And most importantly, how will Twilighters react (deafening squeals? rapt slience? rioting?) when this trailer plays in front of Twilight this weekend?

AMAZING.

Stephanie Sun, Mar 8, 2009 at 12:05 PM EST

I always say you read the book Twilight once and you will never read it again unlike HP you can never get tired of reading it over and over again..OMG Rupert Grint is soooo...cute so is Daniel Radcliffe. I wish they put more of him and Ginny on the trailer.

Stephanie Sun, Mar 8, 2009 at 11:57 AM EST

I really loved this trailer and i can't wait for the movie, read all the books a hundred times.Twilight is good but, won't compare to Harry Potter...HP is always going to be the best ever!!!!

Thu, Jan 15, 2009 at 08:22 AM EST

I watched all the films about Harry Potter and read some of the books. As for this one, I never really doubted its success after I have read the book ( http://rapidpedia.com/?q=harry+potter+and+the+half+blood+prince )!

Eowyn Mon, Nov 24, 2008 at 06:09 PM EST

The Harry+Ginny scenes were so CUTE, and so well done in the books. they were my favorite parts, and the main reason I want to see this movie. I hope they don't mess them up too bad in the movie.(I say good riddence to Cho Chang, I never liked her. But you've gotta love Ginny, or at least the Ginny from the books.)

Eowyn Mon, Nov 24, 2008 at 05:57 PM EST

I don't mean to be bossy or anything, but can I ask why everyone has to use such filthy language? And can we forget about Twilight, (which is filled with vampire junk, if you don't mind my saying so.)for just a minute, as this about Harry Potter. and, Rupert is cute, fine, but must you talk, and talk, and talk, and....about him like that? Get a life people!
Love Harry Potter, can't wait to see the movie. (Book is still better)

Eowyn Mon, Nov 24, 2008 at 05:38 PM EST

It looks cool, but it's not the book.(I still can't wiat for it!)

Michelle Mon, Nov 24, 2008 at 12:53 PM EST

Well I was really peaved when they pushed te date bck for Hary Potter but the visual effects will hopefully make it worth the wait. As for twilight I've heard good things about it but it will never compare to Harry Potter

Shelby Mon, Nov 24, 2008 at 09:45 AM EST

I think that Harry Potter will always beat out Twilight, no matter what. Even though I had to watch this trailer without sound (damn school rules)it still strikes me as more suspenseful than anything Stephanie Meyer has come out with. Now I will admit that I am a Twilight fan but, as Maddie said, it's nowhere near as good as Harry Potter. Harry Potter is my life!!!!!!!! <3

GO MADDIE!! Sun, Nov 23, 2008 at 11:26 PM EST

i hear you maddie. its soo good to know that others feel the same way towards the twilight-potter comparison; especially when its coming from a twilight fan. thank u for sincerity..

Maddie Sun, Nov 23, 2008 at 06:38 PM EST

THIS LOOKS SO GOOD. Now, I am a Twilight fan, however, I don't think its anywhere near as good as Harry Potter. I don't think Twilight deserves the atteniton it recieves, and I think it shouldn't be put in the same category as Harry Potter. As for characters, there is next to no growth, and her characters are static. Twilight lacks what Harry Potter is rich in.

Derp Sun, Nov 23, 2008 at 05:49 PM EST

I am sick of hearing Twi-hards telling me to give the books a chance. I've read all four and they still suck. There's no plot! There's no moral to the story! It's just a bunch of Bella whining that she isn't good enough for her pretty sparklepire then suddenly becoming the BEST VAMPIRE EVER in the last book (Mary-Sue much?) and some vague vampire sex and pillow-biting thrown in there. It's nice emotional porn but it's a pile of crap if you try to jam it into the same league as Harry Potter.

christianne Sun, Nov 23, 2008 at 01:37 PM EST

I can't deny the fact that it is an awesome trailer. But I am still miffed that I did not get to see the movie this weekend.
As for Twilight - I think its popularity lies in its teen-age, even tween-age appeal. Maybe my daughter would be reading it someday...but I won't.

siska Sun, Nov 23, 2008 at 04:50 AM EST

Hmmm, I think the movie is very good but whoever must know, it's only a movie not the reality.
Love you all.
Jesus bless you forever

hp4life Sun, Nov 23, 2008 at 12:16 AM EST

continued...

At least Meyer isn't alone in her attempts to dazzle us through books. Many have tried and failed. Many are still trying...most of who will fail. All I can say is: THANK GOD for Harry Potter. Now now Stephanie, we can't ALL be JKR's."

that last part was my fave

hp4life Sun, Nov 23, 2008 at 12:15 AM EST

No offense meant to you Twilight lovers out there, the story line of the series is great. But can it be categorized as literature deserving the attention it's receiving? The answer is no. I praise Meyer for her creative imagination but her style of writing really doesn't cut it. Take away the bad yet simple grammatical errors and the excessively misused italicizations; you're still left with no story foundation, and more importantly, no morals or values to be learned. If you were to search deep into Meyer's characters, their backgrounds, their beliefs, their substantiality, what is it that you would really find? I frankly believe that Meyer, now seeing Twilight reaching so many heights, regrets not taking her sweet time when writing the books. That way she may have targeted those harder-to-impress audiences, those who appreciate fine literature...

hp4life Sun, Nov 23, 2008 at 12:10 AM EST

i know this doesnt have much to do with HBP(KILLER TRAILER BTW!!!), but i just read this and i toootally agree with this person. just thoguht id share it:

if you want to check out the interview the link is:

Those were fantastic questions for an interview and Kristen's responses were amazing! She isn't afraid to speak her mind and I really admire her for that reason. She’s an actress but nevertheless an ordinary person just like the rest of us: someone who has a life....and can see the Twilight series for what they really are, instead of being sucked into "that world" where it’s being over appreciated and unnecessary hype is being created over something not worth the attention at all.

Annie Fri, Nov 21, 2008 at 11:01 PM EST

I have seen the trailer online and it is excellent but I am very excited to see it in the theater tomorrow when I see twilight. Especially since it will be on the big screen...lol my dad said he is going to cry when he sees the preview....lol but yah he's coming to see the movie with me since he is kinda getting into the series as well as being a harry potter fan at the moment!!!!

peoplepeoplepeople Fri, Nov 21, 2008 at 07:46 PM EST

Vidoushi Fri, Nov 21, 2008 at 04:27 AM EST

Am waiting impatiently for the film to release in Mauritius. Am one of the great fans and Potterwatch and also read all the books!!!

obsessed potter head Fri, Nov 21, 2008 at 03:39 AM EST

AH. I want it to be July tomorrow!
I love the series, and the movies haven't ruined the complete feel to them but the only thing I do hate is that they're taking out the Gaunt memories, the funeral, &the whole Bill & Fleur thing. I know they can't have everything, but still. :|

It'll still be 9983x better than Twilight. ;]

Karin Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 10:19 PM EST

I'm glad, littlerosie, that you think Rupert looks good (so do I), but your choice of words might upset people who are tired of Rupert's hair colour even being an issue, and like a previous comment said: It IS like saying Halle Barry looks good considering she's an african-american, or Emma Watson's smart, for a blond girl.

Vanessa Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 09:26 PM EST

littlerosie, the reason people are getting so angry at your comment is because it was dim and prejudice. That was like saying: "oh wow Halle Berry, she's pretty for an African American woman." Oh the ignorance.

Whats wrong with swallowing?

Amanda Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 06:45 PM EST

Um...HP trailor playing before Twilight makes sense, since if I were them I would put the trailor in front of ANY movie anticipated to do well.

Stop comparing the two fandoms. Geeze people. Does anyone from the HP side even care? It's more annoying than anything else.

Sammango Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 05:47 PM EST

I really liked this trailer. I think that Rupert Grint is amazing and that this movie is going to be better than the last. I'm also going to see Twilight and I look forward to seeing the preview again. Twilight AND Harry Potter = LOVE! :P

freida Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 05:35 PM EST

looks like a real good movie i liked all of the harry potter movies

littlerosie Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 05:19 PM EST

my god, some of you really are thin skinned. rolling eyes and whining because i was surprised that a ginger would be getting so much attention. if you find that offensive, i'd hate to see you walking down my neighborhood. grow up or go back to mama's.what a bunch of pansies.

oh, yeah and carmen, i may suck but you probably swallow.

Karo Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 04:52 PM EST

Loved it! And apparently Rupert Grint finally gets to show his talent, unless WB will be stupid enough to cut it. He's grown into a very handsome bloke, and dead sexy.
Can't wait for "Ron Weasley and the Half-Blood Prince" to come out...

Phoebe Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 02:19 PM EST

I was already planning to go to twilight, somewhat halfheartedly, because it looks like they've over dramatized it and because this is like the day the movie died, but now I'm excited. I can't wait to see this trailer on the big screen, and I will be screaming when it starts. It's definitely the best trailer yet and I can't wait for the movie, although I'm still incredibly bitter about the 8 month postponement.

Euge Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 07:00 AM EST

So far I've liked all the trailers, but certainly my favorite one is this one, you can tell it will be a great movie, and certainly most of the young actors have to be very grateful Rupert Grint's Ron is a supportive role, because he steals every scene with his inherent talent and that gorgeous body!!
greetings from Chile:)

bianca Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 05:55 AM EST

I do believe that it is the Twilight people who insist on comparing it to HP. Not necessarily only the fans but those involved with the movie. THey're sort of riding on the HP wave to promote the movie and the media also rode the controversy to squeeze juicy news out of it. There are some who even went so far as to imply that HP backed out of the nov. 21 playdate because it is afraid of twilight. Now, this WB decision to show the HP trailer right in front of Twilight is going to result in more controversy and maybe conflict between the two fandoms.

As for Rupert, hey, he grew up and now he's letting you know that he's grown up. I agree that both Dan and Emma looked the same as they did during HP 3 so Grint's growth spurt is all the more noticeable. The kid still looks ordinary to me but he does do the comedic route rather well. The comic facial contorsions makes you forget he has a homely face.

Karin Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 05:05 AM EST

Agree with you Barry! I know it's slightly OT but Rupert certainly isn't fat or has 'man boobs'. Check out his upper body in this pic and you'll see:
http://thefilmcatalogue.com/catalog/FilmDetail.php?id=7374

Barry Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 04:36 AM EST

Yes, I do get the irony of my last statement with the spelling of the word immature - it was a typo, honestly! LOL

Barry Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 04:31 AM EST

This is certainly the best HP trailer so far. The cinematography looks stunning and I can't wait for July. Oh, I'm not an obsessive fan of Grint, or any other actor, but 1.He's not fat (Hollywood's influence on immmature minds is worrying)and 2.Being shy doesn't make you a 'weirdo'. I'd suggest buying a dictionary.

Reny Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 03:22 AM EST

ickly ronnie sure has grown up. And quite nicely too!! Can't wait to see the movie.

jasmine Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 03:00 AM EST

HP trailer = good choice of scenes to portray. HBP is my least favorite book in the series and I vowed not the see the movie adaptation but I gotta admit that this trailer sparked my interest a lot. Maybe I'll go see it in July.

Rupert is buff = He certainly seems big but that's only because Dan and Emma still looked like 15 year old teens. Grint was the only one of the trio who looked to be twenty. He seems to have reinvented his image and is going for the sexy look. I mean, wearing an almost sleeveless top sure is trying to get atention to that part of the body. The arms do look big but the body ... I have to agree about the man boobs.

Twilight fans = I've met a few twilight fans and they seem to be open to the fact that HP is a more successful series. There are some of course who insist that Twilight is better and Robert is sexier than Dan but let's all wait until the movie is shown. They have a tough competition in the Bond movie which grossed $70 M on its opening. Let's see if they top that.

Sophie Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 01:40 AM EST

This looks like it's going to be the best Harry Potter yet. I love all the lighthearted funny moments and the romance as well as the darker and intense scenes. The special effects look AMAZING! Wonderful, if brief shots of some of my favorites, Snape, Luna, and Draco. And of course the beloved Trio! Dan and Emma look like they're maturing wonderfully into their role. And OH MY GOD, Rupert, in addition to bringing his reliable and consistent talent, is bringing the SEXY! Ron in his tank top will be worth the price of admission alone! ;)

carmen Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 01:21 AM EST

it's Rupert Grint's time!!

and to littlerosie: you suck

twilighterHPfan Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 01:01 AM EST

jo, just shut ur face. I AM AN HP TWILIGHTER FAN AND I HAVE MEMORIZED BOTH SERIES!

apple Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 11:51 PM EST

uhm, "b" that is the same trailer. Anyway, this movie will be GREAT!!!!!! Can't wait for summer of '09!

b again Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 11:49 PM EST

this will work better:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6znjg7gWa1M

b Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 11:47 PM EST

WB just released an even newer trailer (much longer) a few days ago, supposedly as a 'gift' to the fans. Either way, just like this trailer, it is extraordinary (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6znjg7gWa1M), and as far as it not coming out until 7/09, there is nothing any of us can do about it. So, get over it, and just think of how much more excited we'll all be come July... ;)

yweasley Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 11:32 PM EST

Rupert will steal this movie.

Amanda Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 11:30 PM EST

All of you people that are bashing and arguing over Harry Potter and Twilight being better, GROW UP AND GET A LIFE! No one wants to read your rude, disrespectful comments. These two book series/movies should not be compared because they are two separate totally things.

Melody Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 09:39 PM EST

I love the trailer! I was super upset when I found out they were postponing the movie. Book 6 is my favorite. It's true that it has some of the most fun and teenage like moments and some of the most angst driven of the series. It looks like the movie is going to get them right.

AliB Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 09:21 PM EST

This has to be one of the best Harry Potter trailers ever, or maybe I haven't seen one in soo long that I forget how feels to see a new one.
When I saw it for the first time I wanted to cry. Radcliffe and Grint's acting skills seemed to have improved, the plot line is gonna be a lot more excitng, I love seeing them fly through London since I was there last year, and I can't wait to see more of Malfoy/Felton play a bigger role in this.
Now I have no choice, but to see Twilight because I have to see this on the big screen. Too bad we all have to wait until July though.

Raven_Moon Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 09:15 PM EST

I'm so fraking excited about this movie! Ugh, summer is such a long wait. Also, why do "Twilight" & "Harry Potter" fans always have to be put against each other? "Twilight" got me out of my post-Potter literary depression. I love both.

Cookimonstress Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 09:14 PM EST

OMG! Have you people been blind all these years, or something? You're JUST NOW realizing how good-looking Rupert is? It took an article for you to see that?...I mean, how could people not see that. I've known how gorgeous he is all along! *is totally amazed/dazed/confused by the way other people can be so blind to what's in front of them*.

rwfan Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 09:14 PM EST

I have a few things to say...
1. The move looks like it will be great!
2. I am glad to see Ron/Rupert getting more screen time (both for his career and for my viewing pleasure ha-ha)
3. Lets get back on topic, The HBP trailer, not what movie/book is better (besides we all know who wins. Harry Potter. Harry always wins)

dove Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 09:10 PM EST

Oh for the record I'm not a teen. I'm a 28 year old mom and I adore Rupert!

dove Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 09:06 PM EST

I'm glad Rupert will get more than 2 lines this time and actually get to DO STUFF. I can't wait for this movie. Soon everyone will see what we Rupert fans have seen for years.

AJWC1 Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 08:54 PM EST

When I saw the trailer last week I really liked it. Am I the only one who gets excited everytime a new movie comes out because the color of the Harry Potter font gets darker and more steely. I LOVE that!!!!

I loved seeing Malfoy. I thought Harry with Ginny looked cute. I loved the special effects with the fog. I loved the action sequence at the end.

I was sad to see Hermione crying (cause I know why and I've seen the pic with Lavender crying as well.....Ron is just leaving crying women in his wake.)

Most importantly, I was sooooooo happy to see more Ron in the trailer. I love Ron in the movies and in the books and I'm looking forward to watching Rupert Grint being given more material to work with.....

Since it's been mentioned....

- I've read all of the Twilight books and I'll go see the movie (especially since it has the HP trailer.) But, when I finished, I didn't feel the pull to join the fandom (Team Jacob/Edward stuff, reading fanfiction...) We can co-exist.

Karin Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 08:50 PM EST

I like the balance between dark deeds and light comedy in the trailer, they seem to have captured that from the book.
As for the actors I was thrilled to see Alan Rickman/Snape, he will be a classic character no doubt. I think the trio all seemed to be acting at the top of their abilities, Rupert being the most natural as always.

Melissa Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 08:10 PM EST

I love the trailer it looks really good. The new scenes are amazing, I really like that quidditch is back bc I miss it. I'm trying to figure out why Hermione was crying, still thinking......
Rupert looks soo H O T and showing some muscles :) (oh yeah)
I think that when Twilighters see the trailer they're going to boo it :( but will totally see how awsome Harry Potter is and that is not boring at all :)
I'm still undecided of weather I like that the movie is coming out next year because; I like it because it builds up the excitement and it won't have to be shown right next to Twilight, but I also don't like it because when they told us that it was extended we had to wait for almost a year and that is NOT fair.
But I can't wait for July and the movie to come out already. The trailer just made me (and I'm sure to others) want to see it at that very moment. :D

Vanessa Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 08:00 PM EST

Nix, a lot of people here aren't teens.

Angela Smith Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 07:59 PM EST

Erika I Guarantee You Ruperts DOES NOT HAVE MAN BOOBS whatever the hell that is that is all muscle so stop being a hater and talking about Things You Can't Even Back Up

Nix Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 07:56 PM EST

I was going to be all excited and talk about OMG Draco angst and OMG Snape with the AK action, but apparently things have gone in a different direction on this comment board, so me go now. *ducks teenage estrogen*

Vanessa Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 07:54 PM EST

"You think Pattinson would be anywhere now had he not been Cedric Diggory?"

OMG

Catherine, you seem to be the only one that totally gets it. If I hear one more thing about Twilight being compared to Harry Potter I'll kill myself.

The trailer was fantastic!
For all the Rupert haters, feel free to hate......thats your job.

Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 07:51 PM EST

I think the trailer makes the movie look great. And I LOVE the fact that they are playing it in front of Twilight this weekend. All of the Twilight fans can be reminded that the only reason anybody is paying this much attention to their beloved series is because Harry Potter was pushed back.

Liz Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 07:50 PM EST

Why is everyone always comparing Twilight to Harry Potter. They are separate entities. Get over it. They are both good fantasy and entirely different. I'll admit that J.K. is a more visionary writer but Steph is also awesome. Maybe if you gave Twilight a chance you may enjoy it. The only reason that Steph is compared to J.K. is because Steph has had a great amount of success. Obviously, not as much as J.K. but still. They are not at all the same story and I am really tired of people like you bashing it just because you can't stand the success of Twilight. I for one am incredibly happy that children enjoy reading in an age where television and the internet are top priority. So what if Steph came after J.K.? They both got children to read and use their imaginations! They are both great writers in their own right.

chop Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 07:48 PM EST

Why do we have to wait so long? Ditto on the Rickman comment. With him playing Snape, could DEATHLY HALLOWS have ended any other way?

Chris Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 07:38 PM EST

The international trailer was awesome. Dan, Rupert and Emma have grown wonderfully into their roles and have all become fine young actors. Also, no I'm not unnerved by the buffness because I've been noticing it for a couple years now.

jo Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 07:37 PM EST

Well don't worry guys, Twilight is one of those fads that will easily burn out fast. Popwatch is just doing its job because they know kids are eating it up. But once they eat it up they will be too full and move on to the next biggest thing. Ms. Rowling has built us a world untouchable. Twilight will one day soon be thrown in the cheesy vampire movie box and that will be that.

I don't mind that HP is release later. I don't want it released with Twilight anyway. By July Twilight will be a faded memory and everybody will be ready to see Half Blood Prince!

divagirl Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 07:34 PM EST

I'm thrilled by the release of this trailer. Looks like it should be the perfect balance of drama and comedy (and hopefully some nice romance, too). Dan looks awesome, and I love bushy haired Hermione (uh newsflash WB, that's the way she is SUPPOSED to look all the time--and with BROWN hair). Rupert looks amazing. He's always played a spot on Ron, and has grown into quite the looker!

Catherine Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 07:25 PM EST

Not only do Twilight fans owe their entire series to Rowling's success, but they also owe their male lead to it as well. You think Pattinson would be anywhere now had he not been Cedric Diggory?

Great trailer, although, as has been said, you guys are about a week late. Rupert looks absolutely smashing, and it looks like Dan's getting more comfortable (LOVED the scene where Harry gets smacked in the head by Hermione, classic).

I'm still disappointed that we won't get it this weekend, but I'd rather wait for it and have it be good. Kind of hilarious that it's playing before Twilight. They can see how a real fantasy series works. It'll probably be the highlight of their experience.

I'm sorry if I seem to be a Twilight-basher, but I'm SICK TO DEATH of trying to read up on entertainment news on here and finding nothing but Twilight minutiae. Maybe if EW wasn't so up Twilight's rear, they could have posted this trailer (which I guarantee far more people care about) in a timely fashion.

jo Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 07:14 PM EST

Erika don't be jealous just because Rupert has boobs and you don't!

And Ruby Rupert doesn't owe you or anybody anything in those interviews. It's sad how people easily judge somebody based simply upon their quiet nature. You may as well push an old lady down a flight of stairs.

Val Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 07:12 PM EST

Rupert is hot and so talented! Im so happy that we got to see more skin in the his movies. Work it babe!
This movie will be so good. Cant wait for the Ron/Hermione/Lavander scenes.

If I don't say so myself, I still think Alan Rickman is the hottest man walking around those Hogwarts corridors. But that's another topic entirely. The real topic to discuss is his excellent shots towards the close of the trailer. He's the one to look out for, and all of us Harry Potter fans -- except for those 16 of you non-fans -- know that about him. I like that the trailer is presenting Slughorn to audiences as "the new teacher to keep an eye on," considering that's how it always works. We know that's not how it works this time around, but I like this red herring deal. Although, I can't say audiences won't be confused if they go in expecting one movie, only to find this will have a lot more going on than these trailers suggest. For Potter fans, it's okay. But there will be some surprises for the non-fans who have been hiding under rocks and don't know what happens. Apparently there are people out there like that still. I dunno. But as it is, this trailer really has me eager!

Erika, for someone who doesn't seem to like Rupert very much, his looks sure were the only thing you had to comment after reading the article huh? why didn't you just comment on the trailer then? and you say he's not eloquent enough? personally, I love that he's shy, and humble and doesn't feel the need to have the spotlight on him. you know why he doesn't need that? 'cause he's TALENTED, that's why.he doesn't need to be all over the taloids, he'll soon be recognized by his great work! Maybe you don't find him that attractive (I guess skinny-skeleton-like is more your type, as Rupert is NOT fat but healthy) but you have to be blind if you don't see his talent to act. BTW I love that Rupert is hot,but if he were fat, I'd still love him, there's more important things then looks honey. ;)

Lynn Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 06:46 PM EST

Ahhh this looks amazing!

To the person worried about Harry/Ginny action: They "almost" kiss at the Burrow, but they still DO kiss later on. The Burrow scene's just an add-on' doesn't replace anything.

This is my reward for having to wade through piles of Twilight crap for the past few weeks to read anything on this site. :-(

Em Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 05:53 PM EST

The trailer, though awesome, makes me sad because it reminds me of how freaking long we still have to wait before the movie hits theaters. I wish it had stayed in November!

Jade Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 05:39 PM EST

RUPERT IS NOT FAT!
nor does he have man boobs. He is a damn fine looking guy! and always has been. And the only reason he always says cool and isnt very good in interviews is because he is shy. This trailer is awesome (especially the ron part) i cant wait to see it.

Ki Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 05:37 PM EST

If you haven't already seen the pics from Rupert's new non-HP movie.... I suggest you check out this immediately >>

^ Hot new pic plus a really good informative interview from Rupert about the new film.

Marion Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 05:24 PM EST

Rupert is the best thing about the trailer! He's so talented & hot, but we already know that =D.

Ruby Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 05:07 PM EST

Two more side notes:
On Rupert: he's a decent looking dude and the perfect Ron, and I both agree and disagree with Erika. He does not have man boobs but he does give horrible interviews. He's kind of a weirdo and never says anything interesting.
On Ginny & Harry: Was v. excited to see a snippet of Ginny/Harry action but fear that it won't be what it should. Heard the director talk about another made up scene where they almost kiss then Death Eaters interrupt. If that's all the action we see for them in this movie, I'll be v. upset. When they finally kiss in the books, it's a top ten HP moment for me. And I'm even more wary when they gave Ron & Lavender a similar first kiss scene in the movie in a previous trailer to the Harry & Ginny scene in the book.

Evanna Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 05:06 PM EST

Rupert Grint is the hottest hottie in Hogwarts, he's always been... It's a shame it took some of you EW guys sooo long to notice! But better late than never!!!! Kudos!
Weasley Is Our King!

Ugh, so tired of the Twilight and HP comparisons...the only thing they share in common is the fantasy part and some fans (probably 95% female). And as for the writing, there is no comparison, HP wins hands down. HP will be taught in colleges years to come, Twilight was written for teenagers. And having read all the Twilight series, they are adequate for what they are but no more than that. Don't get me wrong, I get the love for both but it speaks to different things.
That said, awesome trailer (have been waiting for popwatch to write about this for a wk though). I hope this movie is as bad a** and as true to the book as it looks in this trailer. Looking back, the OOTP movie is my least fave b/c I felt it didn't do justice to that book. Unlike Goblet of Fire, which I felt left out things w/out taking away from the story (though I know many disagree, it's my fave movie). Can't believe I have to wait until July...tear.

Erika Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 04:52 PM EST

Rupert is ugly. Buff? LOL he has man boobs! Haven't you seen his other movies, he is fat. And he doesn't know how to say more than one word, he just says "cool" all the time...

Vanessa Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 04:41 PM EST

"who wudda thought a ginger could be so sexy."

*rolls eyes*

rupert's hottt Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 04:33 PM EST

I can't wait for the movie to come out! and how are you just realizing now that Rupert is the definition of hot and funny? I agree... better late than never. I can't wait for the movie the trailer is amazing with the ginny/harry.

Vanessa Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 04:32 PM EST

Rupert is beautiful, buff and has always been the hottest. ;)

WickedJo Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 04:30 PM EST

well, isn't it nice to see Popwatch and E.W. wake up for Rupert's talent and hottness! Finally! I mean he has been the most talent young ator in the HP movies since day 1, as tones and tones of movie critics have agreed, not to say probably the most talent young actor in the business right now, he has millions of fans all over the world, is GORGEOUS, funny, humble, polite, great guy, and he's starring in three great movies, with some of the best actors, coming up next year, so finally the media won't have any excuss to continue to ignore him as it has done over the last years. I'm very glad to see him get the recognition he deserves.

Karin Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 04:29 PM EST

Rupert Grint has been buff for a long time (it's just been well hidden so he doesn't look too old for the part).

I'm so glad that it looks like he'll get the screentime he deserves!

Twilight Fan Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 04:19 PM EST

It's too bad Harry Potter got pushed back. I was looking forward to seeing Harry Potter 6 and Twilight this fall/winter. Looking forward to both!

littlerosie Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 04:19 PM EST

my goodness, while i always thought rupert was an outstanding little actor, never paid too much too attention to his physique (sp). but wow, i am noticing now. what a hottie he turned out to be. who wudda thought a ginger could be so sexy.

BC Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 04:10 PM EST

Well hey, if we're getting technical, her name isn't "JK" either. lol She is a "Mrs" though, isn't she? Just not "Mrs. Rowling".

Christine Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 04:04 PM EST

Twilight = Stupid as heck.

Harry Potter and this new trailer = Best thing in the world.

Joanne Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 03:52 PM EST

I'm a 40ish single mother who loves HP and was so looking forward to seeing the film this weekend! This was my favorite book, sigh. I would have liked to have seen more Harry/Ginny in this trailer but its still very good! Yes Rupert is looking extremely hot and Dan's not so bad himself!

Rose Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 03:49 PM EST

I loved the new trailer. The part with Ron on the love potion was so funny. I was also very happy to see a bit of Harry and Ginny. I'm really looking forward to seeing the two of them together.

ccross Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 03:47 PM EST

Sectumsempra was my favorite scene in the book, altho I'm also looking foward to the Won-Won debacle and the romance between Ginny and Harry. Gotta admit HBP is my favorite of the books. As much as I love Jim Broadbent, however, he wasn't who I pictured for Slughorn. I was expecting someone more, I dunno, sluggy.

jo Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 03:39 PM EST

Like Duh popwatch. You are just now noticing Rupert's hotness? Well better late than never I suppose.

Contour Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 03:34 PM EST

Hoho. This is going to be as entertaining as it could be. Whew! TI am surely going to see this film. I don't know but it sure does give a different feel to me than the other HP sequels. And, goodness, Rupert Grint's getting even hotter.
As for Dan, I didn't know you have quite a comedic timing in you. This is a film that will shed their talents--from drama to comdey to action--in a variety of angles.

Nice job, WB.

I hope you keep us posted with what's happening on HP, EW.

Angie Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 03:24 PM EST

I'm disappointed Professor Slughorn does not look like a walrus, though personality wise I think it was good casting. Just think though, it was suppose to have come out in two days. *single tear*

Pleiades Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 03:11 PM EST

AMAZING! I loved all of it, especially the clip of Malfoy shuddering in front of his reflection. Looks like we'll be seeing some top-notch acting this time!

Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 03:05 PM EST

This film looks so awesome. I'm ok with the delay if the film ends up being as good as I think it will. This trailer will be the highlight of seeing Twilight in the theatres.

Andrea Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 03:01 PM EST

I've got to say this trailer was pretty wicked, especially because there is more RON:):):) but it just made me even more bitter knowing that the film is not going to be released until next year. I still think the delay was uncalled for.

mscisluv Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 02:58 PM EST

My wedding anniversary is this weekend, and my husband & I had planned to see HP to celebrate it, but obviously that's not happening. He's a middle school teacher and thinks we should go see Twilight instead because all of his students are excited about it...but I'm going to remain stubborn and pissed and refuse to have anything to do with the books or movies.

Amanda Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 02:51 PM EST

Twilight absolutely pales in comparison the the HP franchise. Cannot WAIT for Half-Blood Prince!

j` Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 02:35 PM EST

Wow. Something not Twilight related? Color me shocked. And yes, I'm still bitter this movie got bumped for the Sparkle-pire movie.
