Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade: Best and worst moments

Nov 27, 2008, 01:30 PM | by Jesse North

Categories: Camp classics, Happy Holidays

Macysparademrpanut_l Participants in the annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade are supposed to look insanely cheery no matter what, but with temperatures in the low 40s and plenty of sun this year, they didn't have to fake it. I was up at 9 a.m. to catch every corny second of this holiday mainstay, and after three hours of overdosing on scarves, brass sections, and lip-synching, here are some of the moments that stood out.

HIGHLIGHTS
The parade gets Rick-rolled: While the monsters of the Cartoon Network were in the middle of a song, the one and only RICK ASTLEY burst out of their float out and broke into "Never Gonna Give You Up." My life is complete! All Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parades will pale in comparison now that Astley has put his footprint on this one. Did anyone else burst out laughing at the end of the song when the monster/puppet shrieked “ILIKERICKROLLING”?

The Radio City Rockettes have a fashion moment: The Rockettes broke tradition from their red and white outfits and donned champagne-colored mini-dresses. Finally, a fashion choice as sexy as their chorus-line kicks!

In The Heights makes Broadway look good: The cast of the 2008 Tony winner for Best Musical (including a clearly psyched composer and star Lin-Manuel Miranda) looked pretty awesome as they performed the title song from the show, managing to pull off the only Broadway performance that wasn’t cheese-tastic this year.

The Nutmobile remains totally awesome: Mr. Peanut, head honcho of Planters, drove his hot ride through Herald Square, and it was worth it just to hear Matt Lauer announce the arrival of the Nutmobile (and also to hear my mom call out from the kitchen that she knows a few people she’d like to put in it).

LOWLIGHTS
Al Roker shamelessly plugs NBC shows: Listening to Roker talk up the struggling network's non-hits as if they were American Idol-level successes proved absolutely painful. Next to a grinning Justin Bruening, the star of Knight Rider, Roker said, “Some kid growing up will have a Justin Bruening lunch box.” Umm, I don’t think so.

Harajuku Girl balloon heads sully the festivities: Donning enormous balloon heads on normal human-sized bodies, performers bounced around on a float as Harajuku girls. Did we really need to cross this line? On Thanksgiving?

White Christmas makes Broadway look bad: Are these people for real? The performance from this holiday-themed Broadway show was stickier than the pecan pie I broke into last night. And not in a good way.

A tradition of bad writing continues: It wouldn’t be the same old parade if it wasn’t filled with terribly written zingers. Here are some of the greatest hits: “A bear-hug is understood in any language.” “There they are, the unofficial marshals of the parade -- pilgrim man and pilgrim woman.” “We await the arrival of superstar Miley Cyrus.”

All right PopWatchers, I'm gonna go seek out the mashed potatoes that have been haunting me the past couple weeks. What did you think about this year's parade? Did it still hold the magic it did when you were a kid? And what were the best and worst moments for you?

CHEESE! THE "MONSTER" IS CALLED CHEESE!

Lynne: If you ever check this again, and changes are that you don't, the singer on the princess float was Idina Menzel. She played Elphaba in the Broadway musical, Wicked...which was really good by the way!

Hey Guys,
FYI All the acts performing were lip syncing. Thats the way it is done to assure a good performance for Broadcast. Just like music videos.
:)

Mrs.J Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 09:34 PM EST

I know the parade was amazing! How?I was their. All people involved in the parade deserve praise. They did something that most people dream of. Dont hate...IT'S UGLY!Lang Lang wrote and produced that song so dont you think he could do whatever he wants!

Josh Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 02:09 PM EST

I Marched in the band that led this parade off :) Sioux Falls Lincoln HS Patriots

SLB Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 01:19 PM EST

Rick Astley on the imaginary friends float was awesome!!! I definitely got sick of the fact that every single freakin singer in the parade was a teenager.

DanMat6288 Sun, Nov 30, 2008 at 05:49 PM EST

By the way, they're called "imaginary friends," not "mosters." If you want a monster, check the Extremosaur Pen in the back of the house, though you might get eaten alive, fair to warn you.

James Sun, Nov 30, 2008 at 01:36 PM EST

What happened to Andy Williams? He didn't finish the parade. Also what was going on with the floats, did they run out of air before crossing Time Square? Other than that this was a great parade, my first.

Samantha Sun, Nov 30, 2008 at 12:07 PM EST

I watched this girl, Charice in Oprah shows. Her life story is truly an inspiration. She is a fantastic singer! if you close your eyes when she sings, you wouldn't imagine that it's a voice coming from a 16 year old girl. I hope she will record an album soon.

Chan Sun, Nov 30, 2008 at 09:37 AM EST

CHARICE CHARICE CHARICE!!

loved the harajuku girl heads Sat, Nov 29, 2008 at 09:24 PM EST

I liked the Harajuku doll heads. I'm not sure why you consider them inappropriate for the parade. Please expound.

BeesWeez Sat, Nov 29, 2008 at 07:43 PM EST

And yes, Rick Astley's own rickrolling was probably the brightest moment of the parade! I was on the floor, dead from laughing!

BeesWeez Sat, Nov 29, 2008 at 07:40 PM EST

That girl on the showboat, Charice was phenomenal! She struck me with her amazing voice! And with all due respect to the other teenage girls who performed, she was the only real singer. The future looks bright for music. :)

K Sat, Nov 29, 2008 at 07:32 PM EST

For the record "A bear hug is understood in any language" actually comes from Build-a-Bear Workshop, who sponsored the float that lead to the line. Can't blame writing on that one, it's just part of the BABW charm.

Bonnie Sat, Nov 29, 2008 at 06:42 PM EST

I was at the parade and I felt young again seeing all those wonderful floats.
Congratulations to all the performers esp. to David A. and that cute girl Charice, she was so good ,nice voice.

Preston Sat, Nov 29, 2008 at 02:32 PM EST

Another lowlight that the article didn't mention and I'll stop. When was Miley Cyrus far more important than David Archuleta when they announced who was coming up at the parade's start? They mentioned David twice before commercials that he would be up next, then Miley three more times. It's like David was given the short shrift. I had left to go somewhere and missed out on David's performance. Sounds like he was pushed back 45 minutes to an hour later in the parade. Would have wanted David to perform first, since his new album came out 2 weeks or so ago. Get him to beform his new song first. This is his first time doing the Macy's parade. It sounds like bizarre one-upmanship to me, that Miley's people didn't wanted to be upstaged by a runner up from American Idol.

Preston Sat, Nov 29, 2008 at 02:20 PM EST

Al Roker shamelessly plugging NBC shows was a bit too much. It sounded like an advertisement for those shows. Even talking to actors of the lower rated shows? That wouldn't have happened in 1989. They'd talk with the host of the 1st or 5th place show, not the one ranked in 54th or 86th place (be more of Who cares?) I saw him talking to the stars of The Office. Why couldn't he talk with the parade goers instead, what their favorite floats and balloons were that passed by? That would make the parade livelier. I thought that you couldn't talk to stars and actors at parades, that they're mostly private. But maybe because they all work at NBC, you have to please the people in the suits. I don't like the shameless product placement either! Keep the main focus on the parade entries and the floats!

Preston Sat, Nov 29, 2008 at 02:10 PM EST

The writing was TERRIBLE with introducing the floats! It sounded like a 3rd grader wrote those lines 56 minutes before the show started at 9 am on Thursday! Such corny, lame stuff. Yes, even the one introducing Miley Cyrus was atrocious! TV people need to be professional and serious about writing for special events like a parade!

Preston Sat, Nov 29, 2008 at 01:44 PM EST

Just 3 months ago, I played a Rick Astley song, Whenever You Need Somebody, at our picnic for our 20-year high school class reunion. Now, I see Rick performing Never Gonna Give You Up at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade on the float! This feel full circle that he's still performing 20-21 years later! I followed his first 4 albums from 1987 to 1993. This proves once again that '80s pop stars still have it 2 decades later and don't care what anybody else says about them! Madonna, Prince,Rick and countless others! Rick needs to get a new album with A-list producers to prove that he's still got it in 2008-2009! He looks good today, still young looking for his 40s!

Cathy Viviano Sat, Nov 29, 2008 at 01:03 PM EST

The whole 2008 Macy's Thanksgiving Parade was memorable. We'll never forget when Rick Astley made his surprise entrance. It's also good not to see any "hasbeens" from the TV and Music area. Hee hee. Palin 2012 :)

AuntieMM Sat, Nov 29, 2008 at 12:23 PM EST

I am 50 years old and not afraid to say I watch the parade every year to remember what it's like to be young again and remind myself of the spirit of the holidays. It's good to remember what it's like to 'believe' even if that moment only comes at the end of the parade. But this year's inclusion of Rick Astley was a jaw-dropper. That was too good.

mandy curtis Sat, Nov 29, 2008 at 12:22 PM EST

That Asian girl named Charice was the best performer during the parade. She sang live unlike the other singers. Now I know why David Foster and Oprah Winfrey love her. She can be the next superstar!!!

Tom Skinner Sat, Nov 29, 2008 at 08:34 AM EST

I got this cool Bluetooth video from Santa during the parade? I had seen it in the NY Post the day before, It was a video of Santa reminding us to believe and saying Merry Christmas. Did anyone else get it?

laylagalise Sat, Nov 29, 2008 at 01:48 AM EST

The Foster's Home Float was the best moment in the parade. I loved it when Cheese popped out at the end to say he loved rickrolling (I laughed pretty haard, too). It's such a cute and hilarious cartoon;-- one of the few I can watch with the kids in my life-- the float did it proud.

mileycyrus007 Fri, Nov 28, 2008 at 11:58 PM EST

Don’t be so rude, Miley did well too. She was awesome! But I must admit its true, what also struck me during the parade was the voice of this young Asian gurl – Charise. She has good music man!

I was like kinda curious coz she wuz introduced as internet phenom, so soon as I arrived home, I viewed her vids at u tube. Wow ! I was lovestruck/smitten/infatuated LOL. Try it guys view her vids and you’d end up same. Ha ha now Im an avid Charise and Miley fan !!! These 2 gurls ROCKED man !!!

Ima change my name into CHARMiLEY LOL!

Monique Fri, Nov 28, 2008 at 11:32 PM EST

The only great performance in the parade was performed by that asian chick introduced as Charice, she was cute. She sang Celine's song very well, that sounds better than the original. Miley Cyrus can NOT sing! She was lip synching and moves like she was so stupid. Not worth my time at all.

Fri, Nov 28, 2008 at 11:19 PM EST

i think the rick-roll is the best moment in parade history, period.

chillwisc Fri, Nov 28, 2008 at 06:54 PM EST

WOW - That briefcase brigade from Michigan was totally awesome. Who let them in??

no Fri, Nov 28, 2008 at 06:42 PM EST

Monster puppet?

HIS NAME IS CHEESE! Don't you ever watch the show?

Lynne Fri, Nov 28, 2008 at 04:04 PM EST

Anyone catch the name of the singer on the princess themed float? Her initials were IM. If anyone has the name of that artist, should would appreciate it. I liked her song. The Rickroll was great!

Tyler Fri, Nov 28, 2008 at 03:32 PM EST

I have to say, when I heard the background music of a different version of "Never Gonna Give You Up" at the very beginning, I was hinted THAT would be the only RickRoll. But to see Astley come out IN PERSON to lip-sync the song......Wow. And here is a good link to the moment. He RickRoll'd, I dunno, some 5 million Americans, give or take 100? Biggest RickRoll ever.

CandyMaize Fri, Nov 28, 2008 at 02:41 PM EST

I agree regarding the Rockette's costumes. Also, that the best part was getting RickRolled, by Rick Astley in person .. and that very best part of THAT .. that he must have a pretty good sense of humor about the whole thing in order to be willing to do it!

Steve Berner Fri, Nov 28, 2008 at 01:42 PM EST

You have to understand that I'm OLD! How old? I remember when the Macy's parade was a PARADE. With floats, balloons, and marching bands... period! NOT a marketing tool for NCB shows (Bad ones); Broadway musicals (Bad ones); Movies (see previous paratheses... plus, from Universal); and all kinds o' crap presented in horrendous production numbers that bring the whole enterprise to a screeching halt and delay the comic stylings of Lauer, Roker, & Viera, the Peter, Paul and Mary of lack of timing.

Kayswah Fri, Nov 28, 2008 at 12:32 PM EST

Here's the link to the Rick Roll

The Marching Royal Dukes/Dukettes from James Madison University! GO DUKES!!!!!

Mitchell Fri, Nov 28, 2008 at 10:48 AM EST

What was up with Sierra Boggess (Ariel) wearing gloves and a scarf during the "Little Mermaid" performance? All the other people were half-naked and they did not wear scarves!

Leslie Fri, Nov 28, 2008 at 10:29 AM EST

Kinda sad I missed the Macy's parade this year. But I was home in Michigan so headed in person to see Detroit's. Not as commerical and expensive, but fun nonetheless!

Claire Fri, Nov 28, 2008 at 03:57 AM EST

OMG I missed Rick Astley - He has been our obsession for weeks, thanks Always Sunny. I'm a sad panda.

karen Fri, Nov 28, 2008 at 01:41 AM EST

I thought James Taylor was sweet.

D Fri, Nov 28, 2008 at 01:29 AM EST

Rick, you made /b/ proud, inb4 rules 1 &2

A great link to the parade can be found here

Crystal Fri, Nov 28, 2008 at 01:27 AM EST

And yes, every single performance I see from "In the Heights" makes me really REALLY want to see that show.

JT Fri, Nov 28, 2008 at 01:20 AM EST

The parade was good overall, but with the mention of many anniversaries, I was a little upset not to see the Garfield balloon make a return for his 30th anniversary this year.

Mandy Fri, Nov 28, 2008 at 01:18 AM EST

I thought ALL the "witty banter" was HORRIBLE. The hosts should just stick to describing the floats, bands and guests and not trying to make cutesy little comments. Blech! Some of the pairings of performers and floats were very odd - classical pianist Lang-Lang playing "air piano" on the Sesame Street float?? Dude.

Crystal Fri, Nov 28, 2008 at 12:49 AM EST

Although the RickRolling as obviously planned it is still cool that someone even thought to do that!

I will still LOVE to be one of the people that holds a giant balloon - how do folks get that job?

Ali Thu, Nov 27, 2008 at 11:45 PM EST

By far, the worst piece of banter was Meredith's "I've just received word that the Energizer Bunny balloon has escaped and is floating down 34th St. It's just going and going and going..."
For a second I thought we were going to have a rogue balloon story reminiscent of the "Underdog balloon" episode of Friends.

Leif Eric Thu, Nov 27, 2008 at 10:38 PM EST

I will say that Kermit the frog was the best of all. His performance made me wish to be a kid once again.

Mavis Thu, Nov 27, 2008 at 10:15 PM EST

I'm so glad the parade got Rick Rolled! Awesome!

Louie Q Thu, Nov 27, 2008 at 10:14 PM EST

Did anyone notice the girl singing on the Ecko Unltd. float stumble twice? How can i get footage of that?

Craig Thu, Nov 27, 2008 at 09:49 PM EST

The Buzz Lightyear balloon was AWESOME

robin Thu, Nov 27, 2008 at 09:47 PM EST

Rick Astley was awesome. I am such a kid when it comes to the balloons. Loved the new Smurf and I love seeing Kermit.
But I just love to laugh at the bad lip syncing all around. And some of the balloons are dated - Beethoven????

Groovy Chainsaw Thu, Nov 27, 2008 at 09:11 PM EST

What happened with the Keith Haring Heart balloon ? I got the impression that it nearly collided with the broadcast booth, but how bad was it ? Any damage to the (debuting) balloon or the booth ?

Knight203 Thu, Nov 27, 2008 at 08:45 PM EST

Best moment? The parade got RICK ROLL'D! what in the world could be better!?

Carol Alfonso Thu, Nov 27, 2008 at 07:58 PM EST

It was odd to see Rick Astley doing the "Rick Rolled" 80's hit Together Forever. I thought it was only a You Tube idea, but to do this on the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, takes out the credit of a family tradition. Yet, the little ones are not familiar with Rick Astley, but some You Tube fans, already knew what was all about. However, the idea of doing it at the expenses of Macy's and Cartoon Network, was out of context. My 2 cents! Cheese: "I love Rick Rolling!"

Caroline Thu, Nov 27, 2008 at 07:48 PM EST

Thanks to my little brother watching that Cartoon network show, I know (unfortunately) that the yellow puppet's name is Cheese, and his catchphrase is "I like chocolate milk!" Why do I remember these things?

Kacey Thu, Nov 27, 2008 at 06:41 PM EST

Andy Williams is still alive.

A-list Thu, Nov 27, 2008 at 05:58 PM EST

haha yeaa. "we await the arrivel of superstar Miley Cyrus." Had to be the most I've laughed in my parade watching days. I did like her coat, though three other chicks had the same thing. This parade has gotten worse and worse every year i watch it. But once and i while they get some good acts. (Rockettes new look, Chees the crazy rick-rolling puppet)

Heather Thu, Nov 27, 2008 at 05:48 PM EST

Too bad the rickrolling was spoiled for me when I saw "Ricky Astley" in the opening credits.

NBC! The point of rickrolling is completely catching people off guard.

CMan Thu, Nov 27, 2008 at 05:06 PM EST

I was rolling on the floor when they rick rolled the parade. Classic. Truly classic.
