Jeff Probst blogs 'Survivor: Gabon' (episode 8)

Nov 7, 2008, 06:41 AM | by Jeff Probst

Categories: 'Survivor', Reality TV, Television, Things That Are Awesome!

Survivorgabon_lDeep breath. Take it in, let it out. Once more. Deeeep breath. Take it in and let it out. On the rare occasions when we manage to pull one over on the Survivors, this is the ritual I go through immediately following. I just take a moment and let it fill my soul.

This group of Survivors were certain they knew when we were going to merge and they never backed off from their prediction. They kept saying it at tribal council. They'd gloat about it at challenges. "You always merge on the same day, Probst. It's not hard to predict." I kept my wits about me knowing they were off. Barely off, mind you, but off enough that we knew it was gonna bite them in the ass.

We set it up so it looked like a traditional merge feast. They bought it hook, line, and sinker. I think the key to it all was the box that said, "Open after you have finished the feast." They were certain it contained their merge buffs. They were wrong.

We strategically placed the hidden immunity idol note so that it was visible enough that someone would see it but not so visible that everyone would see it. We obviously had no idea where anyone would sit but we hoped that maybe someone would be able to sneak it out without anyone else noticing. What happened instead was better than we could have ever hoped for! They find the idol...as a group...and then the unthinkable happens.

Marcus convinces the group to get rid of the idol.

He convinced an entire group of million-dollar seeking contestants to get rid of the one thing that can help them win the money. Amazing. For that single achievement alone, Marcus deserves some kind of special Survivor recognition. Some kind of a trophy that says "special achievement." It's the kind of recognition you get when you don't win, but you did "really good." Yes, I know the correct phrase is "really well," but in Kansas we say "good."

At this point you can be sure that Marcus, Corinne, Charlie, and Randy, along with Susie and Bob, are certain they have this game locked. A merge is next, they have the numbers and it's over for the remaining Fang members. Screeeeeeeeeech. Not quite.

No merge. Another switch. The good news for Kota is that they still have the numbers on both tribes. Things are still looking good for them. Fang is in trouble. Matty and Sugar are all alone on one tribe. Crystal and Kenny are all alone on the other.

The only chance Fang appears to have at this point is to get someone to switch over. Susie and Bob seem most likely, only because they appear to be on the bottom of the totem pole. But getting someone to switch from a strong alliance is very difficult to do. People often forget to play to WIN, and instead they play safe.

Kenny, Crystal, Matty, and Sugar are definitely in a hole.

I love that Corinne and Sugar are on the same tribe. Sweet and sour always makes for a tasty treat. Corinne hates Sugar. Sugar thinks Corinne is evil. This is going to be fantastic.

Another immunity challenge and another absolute disappointment for Crystal. I will give you some insight, a bit of behind the scenes. Whenever we start a challenge in which people must do some certain thing for a long time, I always give them five seconds to get themselves situated and then I officially begin the challenge. Crystal could not hold onto those poles for even five seconds. She kept trying but was literally unable to hold these extremely light poles for five seconds. After a few attempts I finally said, "Crystal, the next time we do this, the challenge will begin the second I say go and you're on your own. I can't give you any more chances." She lasted less than a few seconds. I feel for Crystal because there is a certain expectation of an Olympic gold medalist, and I'm sure she wants to scream out, "I'm a sprinter! I'm not great at everything." Fair enough. But come on! I mean seriously, come on! My niece Amanda isn't even 10 years old and she would have outlasted you! Even my younger niece Abby would have done better. It's just unfortunate for her because it's starting to make people question the gold medal more than Ace's accent. I like Crystal but it's hard to defend. Anyway, it came down to Bob and Matty, and Matty won.

Side note: Bob starting to grow on you? He is on me. He's consistent and he stays out of the way. Great strategy. Nobody is thinking about Bob at all. He's no dummy. He knows exactly what he's doing. Go, Maine. I love Maine. It's getting cold in Maine right about now. Shout out to Les and Judy! What up!

Tribal Council awaits...and in one of the biggest blindsides yet...Susie turns on her tribe. Marcus is gone. A complete shocker. The game has just flipped and Susie is now a major player.

Teaser for next episode...just wait until Corinne gets her first look at the new Kota. Marcus voted out at the last tribal council. She is gonna blow.

Now check out our exclusive deleted scene from Survivor: Gabon and then read Dalton's recap.

I HATE CHRYSTELLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 09:38 PM EST

I disagree John. Kota could've thrown challenges to save Jacquie and they chose not to. They would've controlled the game that way. They blew it

tim Thu, Nov 27, 2008 at 10:46 PM EST

Crystal was NOT a 2004 Olympic Gold medalist in the 4x400m relay...what's her real story CBS????

John Sat, Nov 22, 2008 at 06:51 AM EST

Ozjeff, WTF are you talking about??? There is NOTHING Jaquie or Marcus could do. NOTHING. However, Corrine is to be blamed for all this, she knew Susie is unstable and yet she kept her. Bad move.

Amy Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 10:35 PM EST

I hate crystal, Kenny and sugar. I agree that they are a bunch of lazy losers! They do nothing but complain yet they have the power. I am sick of the worthless people riding coat tails to end. GO Matty sugar and bob! Anyone else wins I think I'll have to stop watching because the deserving one never wins!

Funkyfan Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 12:26 AM EST

Philly you must not be watching the same show as I am. Lazy? Losing in comps maybe but I wouldn't judge them so harsh. Physical ability does not a good human make-

I was not surprised at the non merge feast.. I knew it was a fake out and they would be re aligned to each other's tribe. I saw it ahead of time. I don't know how but the writing was on the wall. It didn't surprise me at all. I also assumed the note Kenny saw was left out intentionally, who didn't know that!

Personally I have no use for Kota- Bob is likable but too quiet to like or dislike. I'm fine with or without him. My favs are Sugar and the hapless group at Fang. I want kenny, Crystal, susie and Sugar as final 4 and let them knock sugar out with her idol, then the final 3 duke it out for votes-

Philly Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 02:10 AM EST

Crystal, Kenny & Suzie LAZY LOSERS!!!

maryanne Thu, Nov 13, 2008 at 11:08 PM EST

i can't wait to see randy go ... at first he was just annoying but after tonight he's just plain racist and that is totally unacceptable.

trev&carla Thu, Nov 13, 2008 at 09:10 PM EST

we cant wait to see corinne voted out, she is some cow! sugar baby all the way. great show.

or maybe it's because he's never been with a woman...

Survivor Fan Thu, Nov 13, 2008 at 09:15 AM EST

I'm not a fan of Ken either. He seems to have a lot of pent up anger. Maybe it's from years of sitting in his mom's basement playing video games...

Dianne Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 10:09 PM EST

I long for the day Canadians can play... and I would give my left mukluk for the opportunity!

Great season! I'm rooting for Kenny, Sugar and Crystal (in that order too!) Can't wait to see Corinne blow tomorrow night... hehehe

lalanaz Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 05:19 PM EST

OMG!!!! I think Kenny rocks lol so does Sugar, they are the underdogs so what can I say. I do have to say at last it is becoming exciting, I was ready to blow this season off became too boring. But gotta say Jeff ya'll really shook things up lol. I was so happy when Susie went with Crystal Blindside, everyone thinks she is dumb, I think she has a little in store for them lol. Now if Sugar and Matty can survive it will get really interesting, Randy reminds me of Johnny Fair play a lot of hot air, really do not like him and hoping someone brings him down a notch. Looking forward to Thursday, Thank You Jeff, this is cool being able to share.

TV_Pete Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 01:03 PM EST

I was not terribly surprised by the tribal split, but I did like the change. I was also not surprised by Susie switching sides. She never seemed dedicated (unlike Dan who seemed foolishly obedient) to the Kota.

Also, does anyone remember the week before. How did that vote go? The Kota tribe misled Susie and voted mostly for Dan. If Dan had and played the immunity idol then Susie gets voted off and that would be just fine. Umm... This may be a good idea, in theory, but only after the merge and when you have a big advantage where the not-getting-voted-off person does not affect anything.

I loved the challenge where a single player could win the challenge for his team. This made the underdogs (Bob and Matty) work hard. Great challenge here!

The current setup seems like the weak (Crystal, Ken, Matty, Sugar, Suzie) against the strong. Yawn. We should not be surprised after Fang had voted off the stronger players with regularity.

IHEARTSURVIVOR Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 09:46 AM EST

I agree. I hate Kenny too. He is getting way too much face time. Hopefully that means he is gone soon.

Jeff Rules Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 09:44 AM EST

I am not a fan of Kenny at all. I cringe every time they show him on TV. Please vote him off!!!

Nutters Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 04:52 AM EST

hey jpiddy, hahaha, you're the best. i've been a fan of survivor for a long time, but you're blog makes it all even that much better. you and dalton both. hopefully, i'll be your next cast member, so watch for my application! later gator.........

Ozjeff Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 08:31 AM EST

If the Marcus/Charlie/Corrinne/Jackie/Randy alliance lost, it's their own fault. They used their muscles instead of their brains! Go Kenny!

KingofGabon Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 01:34 AM EST

Randy has the most amusing commentary on the show, so I hope he stays to the end.

Ken will win.

Crystal will cry again.

Terry Mon, Nov 10, 2008 at 05:00 PM EST

Hey Jeff(wondering if you really read these comments)

Love the show...was wondering...if I had an idea for the show ..who would I need to contact?

Keep up the good work...

I love that building things out of logs is "ingenious knowledge" to Crystal. Ummm...Its called "GETTING OFF YOUR A$$ AND DOING SOMETHING". Duh.

Oh, and Jeff...I have to confess that I have developped an ENORMOUS CRUSH on you this year. I've always enjoyed watching Survivor, but for some reason this year is different - perhaps I've just reached the age when its OK to crush without it being totally creepy...Anyhoo its embarrasing because my co-workers will be talking about game-play and I'll just start gushing about the host...love ya!

Larry Normal Mon, Nov 10, 2008 at 01:07 AM EST

Suzie- a power player? Doubt it. While her switching sides takes out a strong player- she aligned herself with arguably the 2 worst challenge performers. She is thinking much shorter term than final 6. What she shouldve been working on was convincing those 6 that they were better off keeping a challenge loser like her-rather than Marcus/Charlie/Corrine- all physically stronger players. Or atleast play the game like Sandra did (the winner of the pirate theme season with Rupert) who despite not being a strong player, traded her vote to whomever needed it the most, keeping herself off the chopping block.
Suzie will be in the next 2 voted off- no one can trust her.

alan Sun, Nov 9, 2008 at 09:23 PM EST

I've seen it all and it is all good. No complaints this season or any other. Appreciate the plot twist and slants provided by the producers. A wide cross section of players produce a wide cross section of viewers. Each season has it's own identity and some seasons take longer to manifest it's identity. This season is shaping up nicely. It will be a sad day indeed when "survivor" fades out far the last time. Let's hope not.

ILOVESURVIVOR NOTRANDY Sun, Nov 9, 2008 at 09:09 PM EST

Great turn of events. Kenny is the man. He is the favorite for a lot of viewers this season. The only things I am mostly upset about is 1)Susie and Randy making it to the jury. What a waste of space, really. It would've been much more interesting if Ace or Dan, even Gillian over Susie. Susie is so dumb, and Randy is liked only of his attitude and commentary. Sigh.. Ken all the way. I think he will make at least F4. Also even though Matty will be a threat come merge. I want him to go far. He is anti-GC and I respect that a lot. He goes 100% in challenges, and has eaten the least being Fang 3 times which i also respect. Matty respect.

Toprank Sun, Nov 9, 2008 at 07:51 PM EST

For you people who are complainging about the switch giving weaker players the advantage consider this. Kota members Randy and Marcus throw a way the Immunity Idol. Dumb Move! They have a numbers advantage in each tribe after the switch. They lose the immunity challenge to a fang member. Not Good! Then advertise to the other side (Crystal) that there plans (to cut Kenny). Dumb Move #2. If they were such power players why did they just bungle the entire episode.

In reality Marcus made the biggest blunder in trusting Suzie in making key vote. She made the right decision and can't blame Crystal and Kenny in seizing an oppotunity given to them on a silver platter by Marcus. He just screwed up.

Lee Sun, Nov 9, 2008 at 06:23 PM EST

I wanna see Ken, Crystal and Matty in the Final 3. The Onion alliance made 2 huge mistakes this past week: (1) Not only did Marcus tell Crystal that he was voting out Ken, but he told Ken that he was voting him out (check out the video clips). How dumb is that. (2) At tribal council Bob tells everyone there that if he had known that a merge was not going to happen, he wouldn't have voted the way he did, insinuating that he would have voted out Susie. If Susie had any doubt on what to do--Bob confirmed it for her. Some people may think the switcheroo was unfair, but both Marcus and Bob strategically did not play it well and deserved what they got.

69Cross Sun, Nov 9, 2008 at 03:54 PM EST

First off, everyone vote for Kenny as your fav survivor, he is beast.
The two people that are in the game for far too long already: Susie, and Randy. Right now, I want Susie to stay alive because she is weak, and even if she makes it to top 3 she won't win. Randy is just horrible. He should've been voted on the first tribe swap. Go Ken, Crystal, Matty, and Sug. So go Fang2!

Sun, Nov 9, 2008 at 01:00 PM EST

This is 1 of the best seasons ever! Thought this was going to be a predictable Marcus win but glad to see other people are playing a strategic game!

sarah Sun, Nov 9, 2008 at 10:51 AM EST

LOVE BOB!!! i think this new mix-up will be his downfall, and he has been playing great i am rooting for him!!!

c11 Sun, Nov 9, 2008 at 01:40 AM EST

I can't help bu laugh at those who suggest that Survivor move to a cold climate. I'm sure viewership would increase astronomically for the chance to see a bunch of people dressed in Mucklucks, Parkas, insulated boots, mittens and wool hats with strings of snot hanging from their face! A face that is slowly turning black from frost bite! No THAT'S entertainment! Think of how exciting it would be the first time a Polar Bear wondered into camp! Think of the controvery when the contestants hunt down a seal for meat and blubber! And what about exciting challenges like being the last to slip into hypothermia to win immunity! Man, I can't wait!!!

KarlHall Sun, Nov 9, 2008 at 01:38 AM EST

Marcus, marcus, marcus. Your Onion Alliance had such great promise too, if you didn't expect producer twists AND being so complacent you never included Bob and Susie in it.

What I'm looking forward to nxt ep:
1) Corinne blowing up.
2) Charlie gasping in absolute horror.
3) Sugar vs Corinne over at Fang.
4) Randy cracking more snide remarks while looking in from the sidelines. HE IS HILARIOUS! What happened to Randy's wisecracks?
5) Kenny and Crystal convincing Matty and Sugar that they are in it to F4, no matter what.

Sugar was smart to have gotten rid of Ace. He would have dominated in the end, that British snake. My pick for Final 3: Kenny, Crystal, Sugar.

However, I have a strange feeling Matty will be gone by Final 5, regardless of what the promise between old Fang is. Susie will be gone by Final 4. Charlie, Corinne and Randy's days are numbered now that old Fang has the advantage in numbers with Susie's flip.

JEFF YOU'RE THE BEST. THANKS FOR DOING THESE BLOGS!

LRD Sat, Nov 8, 2008 at 10:54 PM EST

OK, so I've had some wine prior to posting, so pardon the misspells. Can't wait to see Corrinne's reaction when she sees the new tribe. Goes something like this..."Oh no you didn..oh no you didn you beyotch. I'm gonna cut you and bury you alive." I love her! She's what keeps me watching, cuz any minute she's going to let it loose.

JBD Sat, Nov 8, 2008 at 10:07 PM EST

Marcus had it too easy. An alliance was literally set in his lap. He barely had to have any type of plan or used his brain because he always had the numbers with his popularity. It was annoying. Anyway, rooting for the underdogs is so much more interesting, and finally they're winning! GO MATTY, KENNY, and SUGAR!!!

Sat, Nov 8, 2008 at 07:49 PM EST

The "outwit/outplay/outlast" mission is supposed to apply to the Castaways - NOT to the producers! This season blows. Good players screwed - not by the their game but by the Powers That Be. Not only once but twice. I've watched every season since the first, but this one has lost my interest. It's lukewarm.

flippy Sat, Nov 8, 2008 at 05:23 PM EST

Corinne better not mess with Sugar!

MC Sat, Nov 8, 2008 at 04:55 PM EST

Hey Jeff, congratulations on the Emmy! I am a loyal Survivor fan and have watched every episode from the beginning in 2000. Thanks for the blog, it is really entertaining. I am rooting for Kenny, Sugar, Crystal and Matty. I would love to see Kenny be the Sole Survivor.

Brigitte Sat, Nov 8, 2008 at 04:04 PM EST

Excuse-me Jeff... Suzie, a major player??? Dream on.
One thing I confirmed with Survivor, is that life ain't fair. That people like Suzie can eliminate people like Marcus is just...symbolic.
With Marcus gone, I don't have much interest in who's left. Bob, Randy and Matty, you go guys!

Stephanie Hyzy Sat, Nov 8, 2008 at 01:51 PM EST

Hey Jeff,...Go SUGGGGGAR...
Your cast is great. Looking forward to next week. I have one for ya,...How about sending a new survivor group to some place really cold.

ken l Sat, Nov 8, 2008 at 01:18 PM EST

Probst,

I can't wait until next week. Seeing Charlie (likely) weep long and hard for his beloved Marcus should make for quality viewing. Thank you for season after season of fun stuff. It's the only show I look forward to every September & February.

AA Sat, Nov 8, 2008 at 12:47 PM EST

Hey Jeff, since I see you've stopped to check out the comments (thanks, by the way), I'm going to put out my appeal again: how about a Survivor filmed in Canada? You don't have to use Canadians (since we haven't been able to participate yet!), but we have awesome summers here, lots of bugs and wild animals, lakes and beaches for skin and water challenges! Come on!! Whaddya say! How about shaking it up for a change?

Dee H. Sat, Nov 8, 2008 at 12:27 PM EST

I can't believe peeps are still predicting who will win! I think there is a small group of likely winners, but if anything is certain, it's that this season is unpredictable! I believe Crystal or Kenny will win because of their strategic talents.

Pete Sat, Nov 8, 2008 at 12:23 PM EST

By the way, thank you Jeff for stopping by. Good to see that you read the comments viewers make.

Everyone I know understands I'm a big fan of the show. My phone rang off the hook after this week's show. You told us this week would be good. So even people who don't typically watch had feedback and many questions.

People wanted to know what I thought of the strategy, would I have taken that idol? They commented on the switch, and of course the boot of the very one who cast the idol into the ocean. That kind of watercooler talk will hopefully keep Survivor vital for several more seasons.

Pete Sat, Nov 8, 2008 at 11:55 AM EST

The sheer number of responses to this week's blog indicates the intrigue the twist produced. I'm sympathetic to the no-win proposition many of these comments create for the producers. Some seem to want predictability and a Darwinian "strong survive" scenario. Others revel in dramatic switches and flips that allow for unlikely heroes. You can't have it both ways.

It does bug me that switches seem to reward mediocrity. But as one blogger noted, taking care of the low person of the alliance on the switch is paramount. Bad gameplay cost Marcus the game, plain and simple. The editing suggested he would make it further, making his demise all the more shocking.

If Kota evaporates as a result of this turn of events, it will remind me of the Rotu collapse. And while we all have our favorites we may hate to see go, you have to love the timeless Survivor theme of the arrogant getting what they deserve. Hope I learn that lesson before its too late.

CJ Sat, Nov 8, 2008 at 11:26 AM EST

I love love love that this season the execs are keeping the cast on their toes. Switching up teams and forcing people to question their alliances and strategies. Its a good change of pace

What I'd love even more is to see a survivor where they start out with no teams for many many days... no one would ever see that coming or have a clue how to work with in that situation. Challenges could be for individual immunity but by winning individual immunity you are forced to publicly "save" x tribe members for the next tribal council.... therefore outing your alliance each time. Then when the merge would normally happen you divide them and only merge when the group is very small... forcing alliances presumably out the window. It would be awesome!

Or a version of family/couples survivor where you have groups of 2 people who are related/friends whatever and the only hitch is you are not allowed to reveal to any member who you are related to... that would make tribals & alliances awesome!

how dumb to think that Jeff likes Bob because he teaches in Gorham where former contestant/temp partner for Jeff went. DUH! As we say here, what does that have to do with the price of milk? He likes Bob cause Bob is clever..and Jeff LOVES clever!!

Ernestina Sat, Nov 8, 2008 at 09:14 AM EST

Go Bob! Watch carefully while the one who is most clever, least catty, and most resourceful moves into the final 3! Bob is awesome...he has saved KOTA at the campsite, being the one who can figure out how to make something out of nothing. He is amazing..and I love him! GOOOOO Bob!!

Survivor switch off is good for tv, but bad for strategic gameplay.

Even at the star you know the old Kota are screwed. The merge comes it would have been Kenny, Crystal, Matty and Sugar. While Suzie switches back to them. You never know Randy might join their group. Thus making the old Kota tribe of Marcus, Charlie, Corrine and Bob vulnerable.

It was getting predictable already. Marcus was next to go even another switcheroo has taken effect.

Strategically, the old Kota could have just play to lose each time and gotten rid of Suzie, Dan and even Randy. But whatever happens they dont have any chance of wining.

I hope Mark Burnett STOPS this ridiculous switcheroo, unless the other team is really annoying.

Survivors are always cast-away on some remote island or jungle setting. Always hot/rainy/humid weather.
WHEN are we going to see them thrown together in some icebox like Greenland or Iceland or similar? Now THAT would be a Survivor to watch!
Really Jeff, give it a thought--still time, I think!

Glad you guys are enjoying the blogs. Thanks for all the feedback. Your loyalty is what keeps Survivor on the air. We realize different people like different seasons. I didn't care for Survivor: Africa for instance and others thought it was one of our best. To each his own. We endeavor to always bring you a good show to pay you back for your loyalty. To all the Survivors reading these blogs, thanks for having a sense of humor. At the end of the day it's all in fun. Probst

Great result. Marcus only has himself to blame:
- he didn't make much effort with Suzie prior
- when they formed new tribes and she said she wanted top 3. He should have either agreed (if he was prepared to lie and go back on that)or agreed not knowing what would happen later on anyhow
- not realizing Suzie bringing up top 3 was basically her ultimatum for his fate. She knew she was on the bottom of the totem pole and so did he. Did he think she would happily eliminate others till final 6?
- being so condescending to the others rubbed people the wrong way
- throwing the idol out of arrogance. duh

Crystal doesn't play Survivor like she's an Olympic athlete. In fact when she saved Kenny's scrawny butt this week, by manipulating stupid Susie, it was the first real effort she has made in the game. Those 3 losers have been grating on my nerves since they were in the original fang tribe. They are useless, miserable, and boring to watch. I wish all three of them were gone.

JTRAIN Sat, Nov 8, 2008 at 03:46 AM EST

Corrinne acts nice to peoples faces. What a beyotch.

Sat, Nov 8, 2008 at 03:10 AM EST

i LOVE survivor.. but honestly this has been one of the worse seasons.. :( they have to switch the tribes every 2 episodes to get some drama... i hope next year we get a better casting! what were you thinking? honestly?! susie? paloma?.. plus: there IS a beach in gabon.. make them live in the beach and take down those HUTS.. this is SURVIVOR.. make them build a shelter! anyway.. i LOVE this show and will continue watching anyway :)

Darwin Sat, Nov 8, 2008 at 01:51 AM EST

Sugar and Sour??? More like BEAUTY AND THE BEAST! That Corinne has such a foul mouth and attitude. I want her next to go. Charlie and Corinne better stop trying to be cheerleaders to Marcus too because they look pathetic. Hahahaha onion alliance??? sliced and diced by Master Ken.

Lynn in the Desert Sat, Nov 8, 2008 at 12:49 AM EST

"Corinne hates Sugar. Sugar thinks Corinne is evil. This is going to be fantastic."

Probst, you are a freaking GENIUS. I laughed so hard at that line, Coca-cola came out my nose, which is so painful, I think you should use it at a challange...Oh. My. God. Its BIMBO THUNDERDOME!!!

On an aside - Bob is so wonderful, I will scream when he goes - he is a good nut in a bowl of Chex Mix from Hell. And no Marcus? Really. I may not be able to watch without Dr. Love.

Marc13 Sat, Nov 8, 2008 at 12:22 AM EST

Anyone that says that this is a boring season are not true Survivor fans. Gabon is great. The Fang Underdogs HAD to play the strategic game and ARE. Suzie made a move Denise is China should have! It's getting interesting....WE ARE LOVING IT!

I've enjoyed every season of Survivor for what it is: A game! It's not a popularity contest, a beauty contest or social club. No matter how it is spun, everyone that is on the show has to have a certain predatory instinct to even make it that far. To expect any one of them not to lie, cheat and manipulate others is obviously erroneous. Every one of them is trying to manipulate the others, whether it's through playing on their emotions, their symphathy, their sexuality, or their naivity. It's just a game. Enjoy it for that alone.

Zoe Fri, Nov 7, 2008 at 11:27 PM EST

This season is really unpredictable! I love it!

Oh and the only reason everyone in the comments is complaning that this season isn't good is because their favorites players got voted out. Haha

Fri, Nov 7, 2008 at 10:37 PM EST

I know it's a game. My gripe about Marcus getting his head chopped off has nothing to do with the what's happening in the game. I should have been clearer. My gripe is with the editors/post-production. Why go out of their way to paint fang tribe as pathetic and so negatively and Marcus so glowingly. Why not expose his arrogance earlier? What kind of story is being told here? What kind of characters are being portrayed? Who should one root for? Are these the characters I want to be spending my Thursday night with? The editors can tell a better story than what they've been telling.

People who are saying they aren't going to watch "Survivor" anymore because "this is the worst season ever" are certainly not true fans. Even the most die-hard sports fans have years where their favorite teams don't do well, but you still stick by your team no matter what. If "Survivor" is your favorite show, you stick with it, even in those "lean" seasons where it doesn't meet up to your expectations.

Those bagging on Crystal, she is a gold medalist, yes, but she is a sprinter. She didn't win a gold medalist in balancing, in mountain climbing, in arm strength, etc. Put her on a flat track and she'll blow everyone away. She's not a gold medalist in every athletic event ever invented!

I agree with the person who said Crystal and Kenny should try "helping" Kota lose on purpose, and convince Susie to join them in voting out Bob. Then (if there still isn't a merge) lose the next week, vote out Susie, and the the old Fang tribe will have the numbers to pick off the old Kota 1 by 1!

Roger Rodriguez Fri, Nov 7, 2008 at 09:21 PM EST

Now that they changed the tribes up AGAIN, i dont know which tribe to cheer for. i was with Fang the whole time, from the beggining. even the first switch, i was still with that team. even tho they lose agiain and again. now who do i choose? anyways, i think the final 3 should be Crystal, Kenny, and Matty! how bout you other survivour fans???

Moi Fri, Nov 7, 2008 at 08:57 PM EST

Bob is definately going to win.
He hasn't been written down at any time. He causes no conflict whatsoever. Everyone loves him and no one sees him as a threat. He's going to make it to the final two, and we know he'll win once that happens.

facesnorth Fri, Nov 7, 2008 at 08:46 PM EST

By the way PROPS on the perfect I.C. challenge for this particular episode - no way they could throw it! Matty showed how much he wants this.

I still can't believe the draw from the hat produced the perfect teams for the most interesting outcome. I'm sure you producers feel the same about it.

facesnorth Fri, Nov 7, 2008 at 08:42 PM EST

if merge comes next week

"perfect REPLAY of this past episode"

not reply

facesnorth Fri, Nov 7, 2008 at 08:39 PM EST

This season is definitely delivering the goods. No question you got them this time around. And while we all knew the merge was not gonna happen because of the previews and inside comments (I would have liked to have been surprised too about that, though), I was definitely on the seat of my pants. I like Marcus, but it went down exactly as I'd hoped. How could the teams have been divided so perfectly? I was so happy when Matty won immunity. And then having Kota go to T.C. with no idol in the tribe and flaky Suzie able to go either way, great episode! Very interesting from here on out now, especially if the merge comes next week (which it should, perfect timing with a large scale reply of this past episode, 4 and 4 with flaky Suzie in the middle -she may need to continue flipping sides to get anywhere. This has turned into a great season.

I thought it would have been great if ACE faked his british accent or did another accent for the whole show. that would have been hilarious..

I too have watched EVERY season, every episode of Survivor since Borneo. I LOVE THIS SHOW!!! The IC last night was awesome. What a difficult challenge to outlast the other survivors. My son and I were laughing hysterically as they set the idol adrift. How stupid is that. I am wondering if it manages to float back onto a beach with the tide??? That would be hilarious. It would be even funnier if Randy pulled a fast one and hid it in his pants!!

TheBuzzSaw Fri, Nov 7, 2008 at 07:21 PM EST

-- "Why build Marcus up as a popular contestant so much, and then chop off his head? His arrogance wasn’t shown until his boot episode, by which time, many viewers are probably rooting for him already.? --

Um, it's a game. The producers didn't kill him off. They introduced a new kind of pressure; Marcus cracked. Doing anything to "keep" Marcus would have been hacking the results.

Laura Douglass Fri, Nov 7, 2008 at 07:19 PM EST

I understand that lots of good people and great players get screwed up by Survivor's wonderful little twists and turns, but this time? Too far, CBS.
Marcus was the best player of this game, and someone you truly wanted to root for. I'm just hoping he didn't go home so early as to lose out on the opportunity to be chosen as fan favorite... He'll get my vote, that's for sure.
Anyway, I still might watch the season... but this tribe shifting was crap, and hands down favored the Crystal/Kenny ridiculousness.
Thanks for blogging, Jeff... but maybe your words can sway the producers to let the game play out as it will without trying to make things even and shake them up. Keep the great physical and mental challenges coming, and the social chaos will happen on its own!
