Jeff Probst blogs 'Survivor: Gabon' (episode 10)

Nov 21, 2008, 07:30 AM | by Jeff Probst

Categories: 'Survivor', Reality TV, Television, Things That Are Awesome!

Survivorgabon_l_4 After tonight's episode ended, I called Doc Horowitz and said, "I gotta get in to see you. I think something is wrong with me. I think I'm losing my edge. Going soft. Can you run a test or something, see what's what?"

He asked me for my symptoms.

I said, "I felt badly for Randy getting played at tribal council like a banjo at a small town country fair. (Yes, I know, bad analogy and small town and country fair are probably redundant.)

Recognizing the severity of my condition, he immediately cancelled his morning appointments to squeeze me in. I'm waiting on the results.

In the meantime, I try to make sense of it all. Randy is a bitter man with a ton of enemies, and he had this coming like a kid who sticks a fork in a toaster. (Was that one any better?) He deserved what he got like Survivor deserves an Emmy.

So why did I feel bad? Maybe there is just something about Randy that I can relate to and sympathize with. Oh, he will hate me saying it like that.

My friend Serena thinks the answer lies with Sugar and the way she handled herself as I read the votes. "Not cool." (I think she might be right. Serena is almost always right.) That uncontrollable laugh that came from such a deep place inside Sugar was so uncomfortable that I almost wanted to pull the votes out, rearrange them, rewind the tape, and vote Sugar out. Ah, but that's just me. Me and Serena that is...Me and Serena sitting in a tree, k-i-s-s-i-n-g.

I will say this - it was brilliantly played from top to bottom, and I do appreciate that level of execution. Bob deserves major credit. He built an amazing fake idol, and he played both Corinne and Randy so well. Didn't rush it, wasn't pushy. He was subtle. Subtle like the feather of an eagle falling softly to the ground. (Worse?)

Corinne on the other hand is equally as mean as Randy but I don't find myself rooting for her in any way. She is an original. I will give her that. Not sure we've ever had anybody on the show quite like Corinne. Corinne is as subtle as a thunderstorm. Subtle as the look I give a Survivor when they want to quit. Subtle as, I know, a Probst analogy.

Jerri Manthey can't hold a candle to Corinne. Jerri had some likable qualities about her, Corinne has none. Just ask her. She'll tell you the same thing.

By the way, (which is, by the way, one of the phrases that most annoys me because everyone in Hollywood uses it as a way to alert you they're about to say something brilliant) all this stuff about me being attracted to Corinne really surprised me. Here's the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. I felt like I had been beating up on Corinne for so long that when I saw her smile on the last episode I figured I'd say at least one nice thing.

Fittingly, Corinne probably hated that I said it in the first place. But just so we are clear, I have no interest in dating Corinne. I do not have the hots for Corinne. I don't think about Corinne. I like nice women. Done. Enough already.

The Survivor Auction. Food wise, Randy was the clear winner and provoked a wonderful 5th-grade argument with Sugar about a cookie, and of course Sugar had to get the last word, and did when she took the cookie and gave it to Matty. So there. Whatcha gonna do about it? Serena likes Sugar but thinks she gets it wrong every single time at tribal council.

I'm a little confused about the auction – it's the one point in the show where we give the Survivors free money and then let them bid on food items and the like. So...why was it so bitter?

Sugar hates Randy. Randy hates Sugar. Corinne hates Sugar. Sugar hates Corinne. Thank god everybody likes Bob. At least there's one person to root for.

I'll tell you this: If it keeps up it's going to be an amazing bloodbath toward the end.

I absolutely love watching Kenny get more and more cocky each week. At the auction for instance, Matty is bidding on the burger and fries and Kenny, who had the most money, shrugs his shoulders and says, "You can have it." Like Tony Soprano, this kid. I can't wait for the execution. I promise you if he keeps this attitude, it will happen and he will not see it coming.

Okay, so to recap, which Serena loves for me to do...

I'm concerned about my soft spot for Randy, not interested in Corinne, can't wait for Kenny to get his comeuppance, enjoyed the 5th grade cookie argument, and love Bob.

Now to answer a few questions from last week:

Regarding a Final 3 vs. a Final 2: Our main concern is to make sure we keep the show interesting, so we vary it from season to season as we see fit. There are strong arguments on both sides, and I promise you whichever side you take, I will take the other side and defeat you. I love debate.

To Penny P – uh...the reason I started saying "FANG" instead of "FONG" is because the tribe changed their name. Pay attention.

Finally, regarding the "same lines" I say every week, such as: "Come on in guys," "Wanna know what you're playing for?" "Immunity is back up for grabs," etc....

1. Yes, I write everything I say. Blame me.
2. Yes, I'm aware I say them every time. That's the joke. Hello.

That's it. I'm done.

Now check out our exclusive deleted scene from Survivor: Gabon and then read Dalton's recap.

CJ Reno Thu, Jan 15, 2009 at 06:44 PM EST

I just finished watching season 17...had it on TVO for months and just never got around to watching it. By far one of the more entertaining seasons I've seen.
I just wanted to leave this for the people that think Sugar went a little to far with her reaction to the prank at Tribal Council. Randy at NO POINT held back any animosity or negative energy during his entire stay at Gabon. Can you honestly say that he didn't reap what he sowed? Why should Sugar have held back any glee she might have been feeling in that moment, as wicked as it might have seemed. I mean, "Not cool"? Come on, everything Randy said or did was "Not Cool." That the laughter that came from deep down inside Sugar was nothing but the flowering of a seed that Randy planted and helped to grow. Sugar has nothing but my respect for giving me one of the most enjoyable, and devilishly funny moments of Survivor history.

Marilyn Tue, Dec 23, 2008 at 05:22 PM EST

Jeff think you're the greatest, love survivor so much. Wish I could try out for it, but afraid I may not have the right stuff. I think it was the highlight of the season Randy getting taken in, It was just funny to me that he was taken in and kudos to bob for making such a great fake idol! Can't wait for the next season, and I have my friend that now loves survivor she got addicted this season

Beth Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 10:29 AM EST

Jeff, I love you. nuff said. I agree about Randy - I was glad to see him get played, but I felt really bad for him because of Sugar's reaction. She ground salt into that wound so hard, Randy's probably STILL tasting it. It definitely made me re-think how I feel about her. But naw, I still love her. And who couldn't love Bob? He rocked!

ZigZ Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 09:08 PM EST

Jeff, I have just found this blog. The show is amazing and your comments are the best part of the show. You are the Maestro, keep up the great work.

By the way, I think that those of us who understand human behavior in groups all have a soft spot for Randy, because I think he was at some point a nice open guy, but was seriously scared along the way, but in general, probably a nice guy and didn't deserve to get humiliated.

Now Corrine on the other hand is either truly a horrible person, just an evil, black hearted, scumbag. Or she really wants to get her career in TV going. She knew a bit too much about "I love the edit on Randy". What's up with her? I hope you don't give her more than her 15 minutes in the sun.

Finally, please don't ever stop making this show, it is the best, and you are the biggest part of it. Survivor without Jeff is like chips without the dip. You da man!!!

Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 07:11 PM EST

Hey Jeff!! I just found your blog--I love it. I don't think the jury should be able to talk to the final 3-They are all way too bitter to even ask an intelligent question. It's just uncomfortable to watch. I think they should write down their questions and then you read them to the final three to get their response. Just a thought.

Shannon A. Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 06:34 PM EST

WOW... I LOVE SURVIOR ! SUGAR HAS BEEN ONE OF MY FAVORITES THIS SEASON ALONG WITH BOB.

Erin Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 05:13 PM EST

Jeff how do you restrain yourself from choking people like Randy and Corinne? My mouth was on the floor when Corrine made her final statement to Sugar. To disrespect someone like that is just terrible. She really needs some professional help. She is out and out mean. I think Randy is just a sad man and the only way he knows how to be happy is to make others miserable. This was a great season full of some very interesting individuals.

leslie Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 08:56 AM EST

I know that this is a game, but Corrine is one nasty person. I find it hard to believe she could possibly say what she said to the last 3 survivors and just think it was OK. She must have some real issues in her life, and I can't believe she has any true friends if that is the way she treats people.

CLW Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 03:01 AM EST

Darn Direct. Recorded 2 hours and no more. So I messed the studio part. Would somebody mind telling me how the votes came out. Didn't see any of it but I am guessing Bob got 5 votes and deserved them. Help me out.
Thanks

Nutters Fri, Dec 12, 2008 at 04:26 AM EST

JPiddy, you are the best. You're blog is the greatest thing that's happened to me since I've been watching Survivor. Penny P, Pay Attention. Hahahaha.....

Kathleen Keyes Sat, Dec 6, 2008 at 01:31 PM EST

When looking at Bob's faux idol, it appears that just by comparing the circumference of the new fake idol to that of the bottle would make you think that it would be like putting a round peg in a square hole.

JHCMD Wed, Dec 3, 2008 at 07:58 PM EST

Jeff, I just found your blog --Read them all, thanx. What is the best quality to have to be a great survivor candidate. Is it smarts, physical prowess, or ability to read others? Or is it just personality personality personality? Thanx

Kenny #1 Wed, Dec 3, 2008 at 03:55 PM EST

I dont like the idea of the jury members being able to communicate with each other. What if they convince each other who to vote for.

I say Kenny will win this season.

RB Wed, Dec 3, 2008 at 02:04 AM EST

After the recap show and the long weekend, I’m back in Survivor mode. Tried reading all the posts, but stopped at Caroline’s on 11/21 because she said exactly what I was thinking. Kenny would love to be in a final 2 with Crystal, and if it’s a final 3, with Sugar. That leaves 4th and 5th for Susie and Matty. If they want a chance to finish higher, they need to align with Bob and Corinne, blindside Sugar, and take out Kenny and Crystal as they can. I hope somebody does something. The second half of the season is becoming just as predictable as the first.

Lori Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 10:54 AM EST

Re: Sugar - how many times did she get sent to Exile Island? How much has she had to "endure" relative to everyone's "opinions" of her. She's smart, she's cute, and SHE's GOT A SENSE OF HUMOR - and maybe a much greater intuitive sense of "justice" than anyone is giving her credit for. She's like the Goddess Kali saying to Randy: "You act like an a** and I'll take your head off." Public humiliation used to be a very effective tool for shaking people out of their self-defeating and childish egocentrism and actually motivating them to do some serious self-evaluation and maybe even consider "growing up". I think part of the problem in this case is that it was a "woman" playing this "trick" on a "man" and men don't like that and they don't like to see it happen to other men. But if Randy had actually had some other MEN in his life holding him accountable for his behavior, then maybe he wouldn't have felt the need to act like such an a** in the first place provoking Sugar's response.

Jeff Rules Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 09:22 AM EST

Jeff, are you guys going to release DVDs of this season?? I know a crapload of people that would buy them.

ProbstRocks! Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 10:05 PM EST

I agree we need more DVDS, please! It would have made great Christmas presents. It's the only thing to get me through until the next season. When I can watch TV there isn't s--t on. lol I said a bad word lol. I try to be lady like but sometimes you just can't help it.

ProbstRocks! Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 09:34 PM EST

First off, Jeff, come on, we know you have a heart you can't fool us ladies. Your still a lippy sassy mouth manly man though. I didn't like Randy in the beginning, I didn't get him until he was talking to Matty. How sad to think this man may not have anyone that loves him that is why he is like he is. If true that breaks my heart. Love softens the heart and makes you all warm and mushy inside, without love your just stone cold. I hope he stands up at the reunion and says "gotcha-it was just my game" then I guess I would think "wow dude your scary". Love your blog Jeff you rock!

Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 06:02 PM EST

Best episode ever. I kept rewinding and watched tribal council four times and couldn't quit laughing at it all: Crystal's loud talking as she cast her vote, the look on Corinne's faces as she winked at the jury before she found out, Randy's shocked look when Jeff told him it wasn't the real idol, everyone else (but Bob) laughing at Randy (who got what he deserved in the most humiliating tribal council ever!)

Love your blog posts, Jeff. Thanks for the candid insight.

I'm a Fan Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 03:34 PM EST

How can you feel bad for Randy? Glad you called the doctor!

Seriously do not care about Serena's thoughts on any episode. Your thoughts? Yes. Her's ? No thanks!

Bebe Sun, Nov 30, 2008 at 02:50 PM EST

@ commenter Jason: maybe the EW blog is more about Probst's impressions of the game, the players, and events, and not so much a recap. You can get a recap by looking at your cable guide.

I like reading these posts, and reading all the comments that come after, because it's a communal *discussion* of something we're all interested in; not necessarily of Probst telling us what happened and what to think about it. The blog adds a new dimension of fun to the game.

MM Sun, Nov 30, 2008 at 04:14 AM EST

This episode of Survivor was the best episode EVER. That's it. EVER.

bob Sat, Nov 29, 2008 at 09:56 PM EST

Jeff,
Congratulations on the Emmy. You deserved it. I do have one big problem with you from this past weeks episode though. HOW COULD YOU THROW THE FAKE IMMUNITY NECKLACE IN THE FIRE??? That was a piece of art Bob made and I bet it would have fetched a handsome sum in the auction for the Elizabeth Glazer Pediatric Foundation. Don't tell me "the rules of Survivor dictate that the host must toss all fake immunity idols in the fire.." You should be well ashamed. Good day sir.

Jason Sat, Nov 29, 2008 at 06:27 AM EST

Jeff - you're the best host in the world but I can't stand your previews/recaps this year. They're very anti-Fang, pro-underdogs, etc. I feel like I'm being pushed to route for certain people. Just recap the game as it unfolds and let the viewers decide who they like.

dawnd Fri, Nov 28, 2008 at 07:00 PM EST

I have no sympathy for Randy and can't understand the comments about Kenny. This is probably the first time he's ever been on top in a social situation so cut him some slack. I love Kenny and I love Crystal, but Matty or Bob winning would be okay too. Those 4 are my favs for sure!!

Final6 Fri, Nov 28, 2008 at 05:27 PM EST

Things are not looking good for Kenny. Have you guys seen the preview for episode 12 on the recap episode 11? When they are at the final 6, loved ones challenge, you can only see Bob, Crystal, Susie, Corinne, Sugar, and Matty's shoulder. Kenny isn't there! I am guessing he is going to get blindsided by Matty (with the help of Susie, Bob, Corinne, and maybe Sugar). Any contestant who gets the arrogant/cocky edit always ends up getting the boot! Too bad for Kenny. =(

Babar Fri, Nov 28, 2008 at 04:48 PM EST

I hope Matty, Bob or Corrine win. I really, really,REALLY want to see Crystal and Kenny go. I can't stand them. I hope they both burn at tribal council... and sooner rather than later. I hate having to see that disgusting smirk that Crystal has on her damn face when a blindside happens.

And I feel that while the whole fake idol thing was good TV, it was in poor taste and I lost a lot of respect for sugar. That was sad considering that I had started to like her.

carol Fri, Nov 28, 2008 at 03:33 PM EST

If you want to see life at the 'jury house' you can go to the CBS website and check out Ponderosa. There are about 7 videos of those Survivors who got the boot. It's nice to have a little behind-the-scene stuff.

Pete Fri, Nov 28, 2008 at 01:21 PM EST

I surfed to this site in desperate hope for some fresh Probst bloggage,

Evidently we will have live another week in total foggage,

Wondering what you thought,

Waiting a week to be taught,

Wondering who the next of seven will be to clear out the cloggage.

Jeannette Fri, Nov 28, 2008 at 12:31 PM EST

Hello from Canada!
Dear Jeff and the entire staff,
Thank you for every episode of survivor! Since the very first season, when you took me on a thrilling, albeit gullible, roller coaster ride of brilliant editing… I was screeming, advising and laughing at the contestants on TV… with every drop and turn you conceived…totally bought it. I was a bit slow and I did get it was a reality SHOW and it has a CAST, eventually, but it is still incredibly entertaining. You are a witty bunch…I especially anticipate with glee the changes you make to each season. I no longer yell at the contestants and indeed do even not care who wins…but oh do I really enjoy the
journey you send me on and now I yell out and laugh at your cleverness! The roller coaster never gets old even when you know what’s coming! Survivor is familiar enough to entice you back but different enough to fuel the adventure. Bravo! I'll be delightfully watching!

Aussie Paul Fri, Nov 28, 2008 at 07:38 AM EST

Hey Jeff,
I reckon you're playing us with your comments on Kenny. From where I sit he looks a certainty to win the million bucks. Everyone else left in the game (except Matty) has upset the jury in one way or another.
I think Matty will be voted out once it gets down to 5 people left. The jury may not like Kenny too much but they would respect the way he has played and the way he has manipulated his way into a position of power (with reasonable assistance from the Producers of the show re: regular reshuffling of the tribes).
So it's Kenny the Rat (I think he looks like one) on a fast forward to a cool million for mine. Sorry Jeff, I just don't buy your comments regarding Kenny this week. Good try though.

I agree with KB way below in these posts: I didn't like the Randy fake-out (although hilarious) because there was no strategy behind it. Both Bob and Sugar need to be worried about getting votes from the jury. For Bob, there's probably minimal benefit to gain from simply amusing Sugar. For Sugar, she's just giving the jury a reason to dislike her. Come on people - there's a million dollars at stake here!!!!

Jeff Probst is the bomb. Don't ever leave Survivor Jeff...it wouldn't work with out you

Hey Jeff!

Knowing how you like to "Set us up", and knowing you have an Edit button at your disposal, I'm going to go with you playing w/us re: Kenny. But I appreciate you saying SOMEthing as people will inevitably claim "Jeff says Kenny is a goner". Jeff, there's no therapy required. First I LOL'd at his demise...he was mean, he was nasty, he deserved it.. then I did a gut-check. Tummy tuck. I realized although it was fun to see Randy go, we forget that Randy's still a human being. And in the jungle, that's what separates us from the animals. It's Randy that needs the therapy. I saw Randy in some kind moments, be it few - lol, and hey, he's not just a 'character' to laugh at. The man's human, and needs help. Bullies usually do. That move with Sugar orchestrating it left me sour, because it was over-the-top, and made Sugar's mentality look too 3rd grade. Susie gets it. They could have just voted Randy out, plain and simple. People need mirrors sometimes..;-) P.S. You Da Man!

King Probst:

Happy Thanksgiving! How about recruiting less annoying people for future seasons. All the most interesting people are gone (Ace, Randy, Marcus and his lover, etc.). I'd rather see the money go to Hatch.

Dave Wed, Nov 26, 2008 at 12:34 PM EST

It is so sick that people are still defending that slobbering nut job Randy. I for one am quite certain that Sugar's action will be universally praised by all survivors, and ensure that if she makes it to the end, she will come away the winner. I've rewatched the episode several times now, and I believe that Sugar's laughter at TC was prompted much more by Crystal's shouted vote, than what was to come. Put me in the I love Sugar column; I have absolutely no problems with her action. Childish? Perhaps, but hilarious too. If I saw Randy down, I'd kick him too:o)

Show us life at the jury house!!! Please!!! :)

dunks Wed, Nov 26, 2008 at 04:22 AM EST

Jeff,

How do you think that life at ponderosa affects the outcome of the Jury votes?

Bob's fake idol play could be a legitimate strategy to gain trust from sugar and help him crack his way into a new alliance. In the recap we see him blatantly lying to Corrine about Marcus secretly keeping the idol that was cast out to sea into his back pocket. Assuming Corrine gets voted out she now has the opportunity to discuss this with Marcus and find out that Bob was lying. If there was no opportunity for jury members to discuss things at ponderosa Bob could have used this opportunity to make out to Corrine that he was doing what he thought was the right thing by Randy (and potentially win her vote) and also play along with sugar (and potentially win her vote).

Because Corrine, Randy, Marcus and Charlie can all discuss this betrayal by Bob this could potentially lose him 4 votes (unless they appreciate that he is cleverly adjusting his allies in line with a changing game environment)

I have to say, I look forward to your blog post as much as I look forward to the show. Who knew you were so down to earth and hilarious! You say exactly what my husband and I say to eachother every week. Except for the feeling sorry for Randy thing...we didn't say that. We replayed that scene over and over and over.......

Pete Tue, Nov 25, 2008 at 11:14 PM EST

It is the epitome of irony for some here to say "Randy got what he deserved." For while Randy certainly has his rough edges and mean streaks, at least he was open and up front about his estimation of other players in the game. To applaud those willing to stoop to humiliation without even gameplay justification is to merely take the side of people of even lower character.

I'm sad to see Randy go. He was great TV a decent strategist, and the show will miss much without him. There are certainly many others left in the game who would be missed less.

I was also sad to see hero Bob implicated in the circumstances of Randy's departure. All that being said, this was still a great episode for viewers to watch.

Many of you need to go to cbs.com if you're not familiar with the Ponderosa where jury members go after they're voted out. Although Charlie seems to be ... umm ... contagious to the other members of the jury.

I despise recap episodes, save the extra footage for the DVD.

Disappointed In Sugar Tue, Nov 25, 2008 at 09:04 PM EST

I try to avoid judging someone's character from an edited TV show about living in very tough conditions. And everyone makes mistakes. But starting way back in Season 1, whenever I hear players talk about playing with "integrity", I've thought that 1 cardinal "ethical" rule players should follow is not to intentionally humiliate another player on national TV, especially if it gains them no game advantage. It was painful to watch.

subtle as a brick, as always Jeff! ;-)

Maine-iac Tue, Nov 25, 2008 at 04:54 PM EST

Hey Jeff, how about doing a season on a little island off the coast of Maine?? I know just the place....

Kenny Hater Tue, Nov 25, 2008 at 02:32 PM EST

How can you root for Kenny. He's a little, cocky, arrogant twerp.

Lisa Tue, Nov 25, 2008 at 01:18 PM EST

I actually enjoyed Randy a lot during the season. I'll miss him. He was always good for a chuckle at some point during the episode. I imagine I would've gotten annoyed with his cockiness day after day, but I think he's a little misunderstood. One thing that drives me crazy, is why they didn't blindside Sugar a long time ago - when they first found out she had the idol - just to get it out of play. She has all the power and they let her keep having it week after week. They could've easily snuck up on her and she would've never used the idol...oh well.

I can't imagine Corinne is as nasty in real life as she is on the show. I hope the show is just bringing out the worst in her and she's a little misunderstood. I feel like she will definitely regret how she's acted at some point. I'm rooting for Bob, Matty, and Kenny.

Radio Ryan Tue, Nov 25, 2008 at 12:10 PM EST

Wow...I now exactly how you feel about Randy...he was by far my favorite player this season and to see Sugar laugh at him so disrespectfully put a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach...HAS SHE NEVER SEEN SURVIVOR BEFORE? She is laughing at the people who are voting for a winner. LEARN PEOPLE!

That is one thing that frustrates me the most. I'm not a fan of this season's cast because I feel they are all naive and stupid. And what is the deal with Crystal? Please tell me her sucky attitude and poor athletic ability -- you heard me -- is all the editing. Because, in all honesty, she's embarrassing. She should be disappointed with the way she's acting on the show. Every time she opens her mouth or 'tries' to compete in a challenge, I cringe. It's almost as agonizing as looking at Richard Hatch naked. How was that anology, Probst?

Alexis Tue, Nov 25, 2008 at 10:30 AM EST

I absolutely LOVE Bob. His idol was genius, but I couldn't stand how dejected he looked once Randy figured out the fake. I hope he can hang in there for however many weeks we have left!

Kenny's arrogance is really starting to annoy. I'm really starting to dislike him and Susie. Wait - what am I saying? I've always disliked them. I hope Matty and Sugar will get closer to Bob -- that'd be a nice final three, in my opinion.

PF Tue, Nov 25, 2008 at 10:20 AM EST

Jeff - I look SO forward to reading your blog every week. Any chance you'll give us a spoiler if Bob gets further in the game? He's the only "decent" guy left ("decent" being relative to the other players still standing...)
