Why remake 'The Karate Kid' (especially when you don't have Pat Morita)?

Nov 11, 2008, 04:32 PM | by Mandi Bierly

Categories: Deals, Film, Sports, Those Crazy Kids!

Jaydensmith_l According to Variety, Jaden Smith, Will's son, is set to star in a remake of The Karate Kid. Now usually, I laugh at people when they get upset over a planned redux. (Here's an idea: Don't watch it! Problem solved!) But this one got to me.

I understand why you'd want a new generation to see The Karate Kid: They've got Cobra Kai problems that they need to learn how to deal with, too. But the thing is, they are seeing it. I remember chatting with Ralph Macchio when The Karate Kid Collection DVD was released in 2005 and him telling me how often he hears that parents, who were fans of the film 20+ years ago, are now showing it to their children. The movie still holds up, and, more importantly, it has the late Pat Morita, who earned an Oscar nomination as Mr. Miyagi (and who tears up while talking about the role on that aforementioned DVD). Why would you want to show a child a Karate Kid that doesn't have Morita?!

So am I just biased because I wrote Pat Morita's remembrance for EW when he passed in November 2005, as well as the Karate Kid entries on our lists of the 50 best high school movies and the 20 Movie Endings We Love, or do you agree? And what planned remake has elicited the strongest negative reaction from you?

The story doesn't work when essentially you just make The Pursuit of Happiness a karate flick. Ralph Maccio and Martin Kove need to step in to preserve the integrtiy of John G Avildsen's masterpiece. WHO will play Mr. Kreese? WILL there be Cobra Kai's?

Iris Sat, Nov 15, 2008 at 06:19 PM EST

I think that Ralph Macchio should play the mentor in the remake. It will be him paying tribute to Mr. Myagi.

brownSuga Thu, Nov 13, 2008 at 11:44 PM EST

Although I'm happy that black cult classics haven't been forgotten.. I'm not so sure we need to remake the Last Dragon. Why? It was made at the height of 80's purple, last I checked the 80s are back!

Unbias Black Guy Thu, Nov 13, 2008 at 12:19 PM EST

I don't think Hollywood is running out of ideas. I believe the heads and Hollywood are afraid of riskig their money on new ideas. There are million of screen ad television writer each year that move to LA and I read that currently there are only about five to ten thousand actually contributing to the mainstream industry. That's ridiculous. If the heads reached out and truly listened to at least two new writers every month I'm almost positive we would have a bevy of new and fresh films to watch and enjoy. Unfortunately as simple as that seems it's a big "if" to even think something like that would happen.

darren Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 10:46 PM EST

Ok ok i had enough...If they make a Black version of the Karate kid i want them to remake ...Sanford and sons and the Jeffersons to whites.

saywhat Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 09:59 PM EST

db. don't be such a hater. Wat do you mean you hate Wil Smith's kids? What have they ever done to you. The question is about do you think it necessary to remake The Karate Kid. Why get so personal about Wil or his kids? That's why America is what it is today, with people thinking and talking like you.

db Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 06:35 PM EST

I CAN'T stand Will Smith's kids. They can't act and it is obvious as why they are getting work. I was actually cheering when Willow's character died in I Am Legend.

LB Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 05:07 PM EST

Hated the very idea of Dirty Dancing 2. Boycotted that one. And hating the idea of remaking all the 1980's horror films too: Friday 13th, Elm Street,...and even Hellraiser!! Hellraiser?? Who in the hell thinks they can out-do the original pin head? Granted the special effects are guaranteed to be better via Saw and The Hills Have Eyes, but don't f--k with pinhead!

MD Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 04:14 PM EST

NO! Please leave all the lovable 80's movies alone. Those movies were one of a kind and no remake could ever capture the mood of the orginals.
Footloose too - BAAAAADDDDDDD!!
There can only be one Ren McCormack and that is Kevin Bacon.
It they even look one more time at remaking the Breakfast Club, I'm going to cry.

Stephanie T. Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 04:05 PM EST

It would be like making K.K 3. Why should it be remade?!

wg Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 03:44 PM EST

I hate 99.9999999% of remakes. This one leaves me way cold - in part because isn't this kid about 10 years old? I know they don't have to recast with another 30 year old (or however old Ralph Macchio was), but a ten year old? Doesn't that makes this more a TMNT remake than TKK? Oh, wait, they did that too.
---
Personally, I'm most wary and worried about a certain other remake that EW keeps featuring new images from. *fingers crossed it's not a complete disaster*
---
However, there is one remake I'm actually scarily excited about - and yes, the original is sacred, but with this dream team I gotta be excited: Zac Efron and Kenny Ortega remaking Footloose. That's just as perfect as you can ask for, so I simply can't object.
---
But otherwise - remakes? Meh.

JR Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 03:00 PM EST

I have no problem with there being a remake... my problem is that they're making it about a little kid.

I for one don't care about the problems of a little kid.

pirate Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 02:47 PM EST

Off topic, why no mention of movies based on board games EW? Just read that Ridley Scott is at the helm of making a "futuristic" Monopoly. Why not cast Jaden in one of these board game adaptations, like say...Hungry Hippos? Or maybe, a remake of Jumanji?

Josh Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 01:43 PM EST

Zac Efron in Footloose? No, no, no! This makes me want to dance angrily in an old warehouse.

Heidi Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 01:37 PM EST

pointless imo.

Annie Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 01:26 PM EST

Nope. Won't see it. The Karate Kid, Indiana Jones, and The Goonies were childhood staples of mine. You don't screw with classics such as these!

Receda Danny Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 01:14 PM EST

DO NOT remake this. And while we're at it, please stop all pre-production work and conceptualizing on the remake of the Last Starfighter.

GeeMoney Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 01:11 PM EST

As long as they don't remake The Terminator and Terminator 2, I'll be happy.

Jaden Smith is cute an all, but isn't he too young to play Daniel-san? Not to mention, no one could replace Ralph Macchio in that role!

Gabriela A Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 01:05 PM EST

Will Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) and John Kreese (Martin Kove) make a cameo? If so, I'm ALL IN BABY!

(Just kidding)

This is borderline blasphemous.

dan Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 01:01 PM EST

The Karate Baby? Oh yeah... i'll be shelling out $12 for that.

lolo Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 12:58 PM EST

Also, Will Smith better keep his damn hands off "Back to the Future." And "The Goonies."

Lolo Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 12:56 PM EST

This idea sucks. And incidentally so does Jaden Smith. He needs a crane kick to the head, judging by his "Oprah" appearance last week.

Joe Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 12:28 PM EST

Bad idea.....very very very bad idea.

Kristi Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 12:17 PM EST

OH bummer, i LOVE Karate Kid, it's my absolute fav movie from my tween years and i wanted my kids to watch it, not some silly remake! dang! Not a good idea!

jr Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 12:16 PM EST

the only reason this is being made is so Will & Jada can give their no-talent son his own movie.

mscisluv Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 12:12 PM EST

I'm not feeling the remake either, but can we quit bashing the kid in the comments sections? I actually thought he was quite good in "Pursuit of Happyness," and he obviously isn't selecting his own projects.

MS. Puddy Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 12:04 PM EST

This is a bad idea. Next they will remake the Breakfast Club with the High School Musical kids. Leave KK alone. If people want to watch see the original. Nobody has an original idea in Hollywood any more.

Robyn Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 11:57 AM EST

I remember hearing about an Adventures in Babysitting remake a few years ago, with Raven Symone in the Elisabeth Shue role. Blasphemy! I also get upset when there are rumours of a Breakfast Club update. That should be untouchable!

Nathan Nipper Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 11:52 AM EST

Occasionally I'm okay with remakes, but some movies you just don't touch. "The Karate Kid" is a classic. It's not just a nostalgic 80s movie. It's a great movie period, with excellent perfs from Macchio and Morita (who received an Oscar nom for his Miyagi role).

Jaden Smith is a great young actor, and I understand he's into martial arts, so why not build a different, original martial arts franchise around him instead of "remaking" a classic? Something tells me this updated version won't achieve the subtlety, poignancy, and realism of the original.

anxiethanos Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 11:48 AM EST

but who in the world are they going to get to play Mr. Miyagi? Morita was absolutely indispensable.

Anthony Anderson. Cause he will be all funny and make the film even more intolerable.

anxiethanos Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 11:46 AM EST

Seth Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 11:29 AM EST

As is the case with a vast majority of re-makes (or re-imaginings or whatever), they tarnish the original and fail to equal or exceed the quality of the original. Plus, the current new school of big-budget moviemaking is so dumbed down that even when the remakers have a solid plot and dialog to go off of, they cut, cut, cut until all you're left with are soundbytes and action scenes, with little character development or plot to tie scenes together. I fully expect this remake to be a bunch of slow-motion scenes of children kicking each other in the head, with little or no time spent on the character development aspect. Lame.

nykolus Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 11:27 AM EST

umm... no.

~~~~ Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 11:21 AM EST
I imagine they're thinking of this as a franchise, so that's why they cast such a young actor, so they can follow him through junior high, and high school in future movies.
I don't think of the original as some kind of classic, just another 80s movie that doesn't hold up that well when I watch it as an adult. Besides, even if the first one was an ok movie, the sequels pretty much ruined it anyway.
So I don't really care if they remake it, but I do think they should make it more of a continuation, with Daniel living on the beach, and taking a shine to this new kid, and mentoring and training him. No To Catch a Predator jokes folks, I know what you were thinking.
My Thoughts Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 11:07 AM EST
One more comment. The more I think about it, the less it makes sense. In the original movies, Daniel gets his arse kicked quite often. He also has a love interest to inspire him to get up and overcome those beatings. How will a 10 year old take on such a roll? Think about it, Jaden is far too young to really remake the Karate Kid, without the movie changing almost completely.
My Thoughts Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 11:04 AM EST
AARGH! Why a remake? Why change Daniel into a 10 year old boy? I'm convinced Hollywood is completely void of imagination and people who have new ideas. There is no reason to remake the Karate Kid. Without Pat Morita and with a 10 year old kid, it won't be a remake anyway. I'm thinking the only connection to the "remake" will be the movie title. Waste of time and money, but that's what Hollywood does best.
On another note: Remaking Footloose with Zac Efron is also a ridiculous idea.
Note to Hollywood: STOP DOING LAZY REMAKES - GET NEW IDEAS!
shoe Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 10:51 AM EST
A remake would really take the wax off Daniel-san's legacy.
Kaci Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 10:42 AM EST
I just heard this on the radio this morning. When I heard it was ten year old taking the lead, I thought, how in the world will they pull this one off? TERRIBLE idea. My ten year old daugther loves the originals. The endings are the best!
kayla Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 10:06 AM EST
my god, cant anyone come up with any original ideas? the is a TERRIBLE idea! i heard they were going to remake footloose too...i swear, if someone even tries touching the breakfast club...
jen Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 10:01 AM EST
you know they're about to remake Footloose to... yeah...
Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 09:59 AM EST
They are doing a remake of "The Lives of Others"? That movie is less than 2 years old right? And its a piece of MASTERPIECE! COME ON!!!!!
wendy Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 09:54 AM EST
Isn't he a little too young? Wasn't Danielson in high school. I will still be showing my son the original.
Mark Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 09:52 AM EST
Simply awful idea. The first movie is one of the best films ever made. Everyone cast was absolutely perfect and the chemistry was perfect. I still watch this movie EVERY time it is on TV. When I first heard about this a year or so ago I was shocked and still am.
Barton Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 09:40 AM EST
I think it was Gene Siskel who said something about remaking the bad movies from the past (instead of the classics) and correcting their mistakes. Sounds much more productive to me...
harry Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 09:39 AM EST
"They've got Cobra Kai problems that they need to learn how to deal with" ha ha ha!!!classic!!!
Loop Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 09:38 AM EST
Yep... Will Smith is officially a PIMP now. He's whoring out his son to this trash!
Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 09:38 AM EST
"They've got Cobra Kai problems that they need to learn how to deal with" ha ha ha!!!classic!!!
Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 09:11 AM EST
Why ruin a classic?!?Come on Hollywood with all the talent out there - no-one has an original movie idea?!?!?
Elizabeth Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 09:07 AM EST
I wish someone at a studio would just take a stand and go, "nope - no remakes here. we want something original." I'll pass...
Kathleen Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 08:53 AM EST
What planned remake has elicited the most negative response? 99.9% of the movies on this list: http://www.denofgeek.com/movies/15211/38_planned_movie_remakes_you_didnt_know_about.html Especially the "Near Dark" remake - please, watch the underrated original! I love that movie!
(Incidentally, the .1% that doesn't make me get the mouth sweats is "Hellraiser" with the "Inside" guys at the helm. I have to admit, I am curious.)
John Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 08:53 AM EST
Making this without Morita is as stupid as the idea as remaking Sandford and Son without Redd Foxx. And how can you recreate the magic of Daniel's last kick?
Mike Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 08:41 AM EST
Let me join the chorus . . . The Karate Kid was a magical movie for millions of kids at the time of its release (dude, I practiced the "Crane Technique" hundreds of times in my living room), the movie holds up wonderfully today, and hearing even a whiff of a remake (and this one smells like a turd) makes me rather sad. Alright Hollywood, announce the inevitable "Back to the Future" remake, and maybe I'll just stick to my DVD collection from now on.
Wendilynn Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 07:57 AM EST
Completely unnecessary, but typically Hollywood. Its a potential franchise. So much hype has been going on about Summit's "low budget" franchise with Twilight, it wouldn't surprise me to know that the whatever studio is considering this is thinking the same thing.
I miss Pat too. :(
Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 07:38 AM EST
absolutely outrageous. Let's just start re-making everything because we can't come up with new ideas. A new Casablanca, a new Gone With The Wind... when will it end?
Jessica S-again Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 06:37 AM EST
What's next? The Wizard of Oz starring Miley Cyrus?
Please, Mommy, make it stop...
DJ Rogue Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 04:25 AM EST
Praise Xenu! Why work hard on something original in the present when you can rape the past?
Jen80 Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 02:23 AM EST
Chills ran up and down my spine when I heard they were going to remake The Goonies. What is wrong with people? These movies are 20 years old, and what, they're not good enough? In the immortal words of Gob Bluth, COME ON!!! As I substitute teacher, I've taken in both The Goonies AND Karate Kid to show the students, and they've gone over like gangbusters. Is Hollywood really so out of ideas???
twenty5 Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 02:02 AM EST
please.god.no.
Brax Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 01:46 AM EST
Perhaps they should try to work it in as a sequel of some kind. Like The Littlest Karate Kid. I personally think that a cheeky 10 year old black kid learning karate while mouthing off at his sense should be pretty funny and he looks like a cute kid too.
James Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 01:44 AM EST
Sure it would be good but not with Jaden -- who in every interview and red carpet appearance, even on Oprah -- comes off so obnoxious. If they are going to remake it, I'd rather it was another kid. Ralph Macchio made you care about the character, something that I don't think is possible with Jaden's character.
Mel Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 01:41 AM EST
why are they remaking a perfectly fine movie, why can't they come up with original ideas anymore? bad idea, just...no.
JBS Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 01:37 AM EST
I don't know why, but I really want to punch that kid in that face. Just look at him--he's just standing there defiantly asking "where's my movie, daddy?" What a joke.
Rob Grizzly Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 01:18 AM EST
Well, Mandi I have to say it annoys me that you would laugh at people that get upset about remakes (which is basically everyone). It's not about watching it or not- it's the fact that it's even being done. It's an insult. And it's shallow. And now, hopefully you understand.
The Psycho remake will always be the #1 most infuriating remake that's ever been conceived. On the flip side, I thought the new King Kong was pretty damn good.
kibun jojo Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 12:57 AM EST
i hate the nepotism in hollywood
shakespeare Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 12:19 AM EST
This is just as bad as Will Smith doing the OLDBOY remake, now his son is going to kill the karate kid! Come on Hollywood, write something new! & the smiths do something good like ALI or The Pursuit of Happiness again, just leave the classics alone!
aaron Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 12:07 AM EST
This is just about as bad as when I heard they are going to remake a nightmare on elm street without robert englund as freddy. Thats like saying "hmm, I wanna make some chocolate chip cookies but can I use something besides chocolate chips?" Both of these ideas should be squashed quickly, along with about 98% of the other crappy remake ideas out there. Seriously, is everybody just running out of frickin ideas?
JuJuBee Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 12:01 AM EST
Doesn't anyone in Hollywood have an original idea anymore? Why do the consistently have to ruin classic movies that have and will stand the test of time? Karate Kid, while taking place in the 80s, still deals with issues that my kids(11 and 7) understand and relate to. We watched the Breakfast Club together and they loved it and understood it. I'm sure most kids will laugh at the video games and cars in the original but will understand it.
Jaden is 10! Daniel-san was 17.. How is this going to translate? They'll have to change essential pieces of the movie to accomodate the age change. So it won't be the Karate Kid anymore. So why call it that!?
Please, stop ruining my childhood movie memories (even though I know someone is shopping around the idea to remake E.T. right now)!
Really... Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 11:35 PM EST
Obviously if the kid is 10 they are going with a somewhat different plot, or getting rid of a bigger part of the original movie but with that said this movie should not be remade. I wonder how Jaden got the role :rolls eyes:
Kyle Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 11:34 PM EST
Wax on, wax off!
Honorable filmmaker should use honorable noodle when contemplating this honorable remake. Ah-so!
shdrew Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 11:22 PM EST
OMG, no!!!! First the Nirvana baby turns 17, and now this?! No no no. A Karate Kid remake is just plain blasphemy. Seriously, please, no. And while we're on the subject, do not under any circumstances remake "The Thing". John Carpenter's 1982 film is an absolute masterpiece of tension, special effects, and ensemble acting. We've already had crappy remakes of Halloween and The Fog. Please for the love of God don't dig up "The Thing"! It will destroy us all!
Renee Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 11:13 PM EST
I don't know why this should be remade - why not make an original movie with this young man. He's talented enough to be an original like his mother and father.
Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 10:43 PM EST
This will easily be the most painful remake ever if it goes through.
Hilaryy Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 10:42 PM EST
Whyyyy? Why would they do this to us? That movie is STILL good and watchable and does not need to be done again. Especially without Morita.
Vinny Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 10:31 PM EST
No!!No!!No!! Very bad Danielson....
This bites...One of my top movies of all time will be ruined....Thanks alot Fresh Prince...Why don't he let his son remake the fresh prince of bell air, and ruin that instead???
David Willis Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 10:17 PM EST
I'm not wasting my money on this. The original is great! Why remake it?
Laura Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 10:01 PM EST
Should Karate Kid be remade? Ah, no, no and wait for it...wait for it...more no. The end. :)
CV Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 10:00 PM EST
This remake angers me, as does the planned one for Fame. Why? Why does everything have to be "updated" for today's tweens?
80s Kid Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 09:58 PM EST
So. Very. Wrong.
R Rothchild Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 09:53 PM EST
This is an absolute atrocity. The Karate Kid should not be remade. Also, how is Jaden Smith going to fight someone? He's ten years old. Ridiculous. Go rent "Three Ninjas". I hope people will have sense enough to boycott this piece of crap movie (if it actually gets made).
Muffy Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 09:50 PM EST
What's up with all the remakes????? They always suck.
DanBoston Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 09:45 PM EST
Its bad enough they are remaking Footloose, now they are remaking the Karate Kid. What's next Breakfast Club 2010?
miv Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 09:40 PM EST
usually i cringe and then laugh off the remake rumors, BUT THIS ONE- actually made me a bit sad. the ending alone still gives me the chills.
Coachurly Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 09:27 PM EST
I could care less about remaking this mediocre, waste-of-time flick. The real question is will Banannarama sing their smash hit"Cruel Summer".
ks Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 09:21 PM EST
NO!!!!!
Emily Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 09:19 PM EST
I really wish that Hollywood would stop toying with my childhood movie memories. I can remember watching it at a young age--thinking that Ralph Macchio was so cute and Mr. Miyagi was the funniest old man ever. It's depressing to think that if the remake does come out that my image of the movie will be destroyed forever. . . sigh
Alicia Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 09:19 PM EST
This is a ridiculous idea for a remake. I don't see how it can be anything but bad. Leave the classics alone!
Kathryn Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 09:11 PM EST
It would be sacrilege to my youth - haven't they taken enough 80's crap (mostly toys) and used them with this new generation. I agree that it would not be the same without Pat Morina. Lame idea period.
J. Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 09:05 PM EST
There's no reason to remake this movie. The original was plenty good for many generations. It's like trying to remake Star Wars or Gone With the Wind. The original will always be far superior.
Sarah Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 09:03 PM EST
There is no way this is a good idea! I am generally a pretty big Will Smith fan, and he seems like a smart guy that should probably know better. Why didn't he laugh at them and say, "look, there is no way you're putting my kid in some crappy Karate Kid remake!!"!? I'm sure there are plenty of other scripts that could serve as the "star vehicle" for his son.
Danny Del Rossi Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 08:51 PM EST
Remember when Will Smith wasn't a Scientology loving, narcissistic, power wielding hollywood 'Playah'? When he smiled instead of smirked? When his son was not a posing, sunglass wearing, mini gangsta? Me too. Wonder what went wrong?
Amy Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 08:00 PM EST
I think remakes are okay when it comes to movies where today's technology will enhance the action and overall look. What I don't like is remaking movies that have good plots and writing or the story itself makes it a classic. If it still resonates with people today, there is no need for a remake. So I object to The Karate Kid remake because how will you make the plot and the story any better? Kids can watch the original and still understand the moral and relate to it even though it's from the '80s. I'm also peeved about the Footloose remake with Zac Efron because how will you update that? New dance moves? But then it would have to take place today, and are there really small towns that outlaw dancing? It's too hard to buy.
hannah Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 07:59 PM EST
i hate jaden smith, he is so arrogant and he's only 10. ugh doesn't his family have enough $? go away.
kim in kentucky Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 07:12 PM EST
no no NO !!!!!!!! this is just WRONG!!!
Johnny Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 07:10 PM EST
So does anyone else believe this movie would not be considered if the father of the kid wasn't Will Smith?
magnificent2001 Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 06:25 PM EST
This is a travesty! The Karate Kid still stands up. In fact, a group called No More Kings, wrote a song called "Sweep The Leg, Johnny!", and had a great video with all the cast members! Hysterical.
The Karate Kid should not be remade with Pat Morita and certainely not with a bad child actor! Sweep the leg of the producer who pitched this!
BrandonK Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 06:23 PM EST
I'm usually down with remaking movies, but I don't see much point in doing this one. I didn't think the first one (or its sequels) were that great, so I probably won't see this one either.
The idea of a The Birds" remake makes me angry, though who knows if it will actually ever happen since it's been "in production" for a while now. Actually any Hitchcock film being remade makes me angry I've recently discovered.
No, Mandi, you're not biased. This is a terrible idea. Making a sequel, maybe, but a remake of the original isn't necessary.
As for the horror that Ceballos mentioned, I hope that it was killed completely dead. I shudder to think of Cameron Diaz in a SoM remake.
I'm not always upset with remakes, as sometimes new twists can be done with older material (just look at all of the different takes on Shakespeare's plays). I do, however, object to this remake. Not so much because the original still holds up well (although that is part of it), but because the lead is a kid! What the heck kind of life lessons can a kid learn, and why would anyone over 12 care to watch it? Sigh.
I see The Karate Kid in the tv listings on a weekly basis, so I'm sure young kids have already seen it. Obviously, this being the case however, it's popular, so if it'll make money, they'll make a movie.
