NBC extends stay of execution for 'Days of our Lives'

Nov 12, 2008, 04:32 PM | by Nicholas Fonseca

Categories: Television

Dool_l Hey, all four of you who still care about what's going on in the world of soap operas, I've got some news for you: This morning, NBC announced that it has renewed Days of our Lives, the best sole remaining sudser in its daytime lineup, for another 18 months. That'll keep Days -- which celebrated its 43rd birthday last weekend -- on the air through at least September 2010.

A PopWatch editor asked me if I'd write a little "fanboy tribute" to a show that I admittedly still watch every day, and his choice of wording made me smile. I guess I never thought of my allegiance to Days as anything approaching "fanboy." (Soap operas are downmarket enough as it is. Can't I at least call myself a connoisseur?) Truth is, he's right. By my estimation, I've been watching Days since I was roughly five years old. And after doing some very rough math, I can tell you that I've given approximately 6,240 hours of my life -- many of them right after walking home from Catholic grade school -- to this show. My love for Days peaked in the early-to-mid '90s, when crazypants writer James E. Reilly launched the infamous buried alive storyline (still my all-time favorite), the Maison Blanche mystery, the legend of Samantha Brady (where would be without Alison Sweeney, people?), and what ended up being probably the most controversial storyline in daytime history: the demonic possession of Marlena Brady. Come on, PopWatchers, I know you remember this fantastic crap!!

As glad as I am to see Days given yet another reprieve, I can't say I've sat through an episode fully absorbed in years. The show has been in a creative slump for a while now, there isn't a single storyline currently holding my interest, and I'm not sure that NBC has the money (or the desire) to save what is admittedly one of the last of a dying breed. But we'll see. In the meantime I, like any loyal soap fan, will keep tuning in tomorrow, ready to spend another 42 minutes with my beautiful, clueless, dazzling, and inane friends in Salem, U.S.A.

So, who's willing to join my shame spiral and 'fess up to be a present (or past) Days watcher? What are your all-time favorite storylines? And if you're still watching, what's your advice for the show in its next two years?

I miss the good old days when it was worth watching, now the characters I loved have all gone. Whose next Bo and Hope? Sami has been my absolute favorite character every since I was thirteen now at twenty eight I still enjoy her. I wish that there was a way for me to see the old episodes of Sami back when she was a teenager, I don't have direct TV or youtube. I also missed the episodes of Marlena's possession, is there any way for NBC to show a special of days. I would love to see the 1993, 19994, and 1995 episodes. The very best of days of our lives please make our dreams come true, and listen to the fans...

I love Days of Our Lives & have been a fan for years. I also would love to see Roman Brady meet a new woman and have a fantastic love relationship. Sami is my favorite! She has kept the show alive, along with Stefano. Please put her back with EJ and let them stay together like Bo & Hope. I don't like all of the new young people they keep adding to the show. I think people are missing the Hortons and the Bradys. I really miss the original Shawn Douglas and the original Belle. I really think they could add much interest back to the show, along with Jack & Jennifer. It would be great to see Nicole's brother back, too. Come on writers, make the show really interesting again. It could be a BIG hit for NBC again. Get some really good writers and listen to what your fans are asking for.

I aslo think besides bringing back ernesto another great storyline is to bring back is Lawrence alamaine for revenge on bo Brady for the death of carly manning because she never forgot about bo and regreted leaving him so lawrence killed her in a rage and blames bo for her death.

I have been watching days since1983,when I first saw hope Williams and fell in love. The 80's & 90's where the best action with bo&hope storyline ever. I have bo&hope DVDs edits from 1983-1987,1990 and 2000-2009,it's great to watch the old storylines, especially the 80's with stefano&victor are the best villians on soaps. The writers need to bring a long action storyline like bringing back ernesto tuscano to bring revenge on victor, bo&hope and Salem where not even stefano is safe.Hopefully they will keep days of our lives for a long time to come with better storylines especially for bo&hope and give roman Brady some action&love story again.

Is it just me or does dr. Daniel have a sex addiction problem? He seems to look lasciviously at every pretty girl he sees. He is a sleaze.

Lauren Tue, Dec 9, 2008 at 02:13 PM EST

I admit it- I have been watching for several years since the Austin/Carrie/Sami/Lucas love fiascos. I always said that I would stop watching when Sami and Lucas got married, and fully intended to after the green wedding, but of course they immediately broke them up and I have been wishing I could stab my eyes out every day since. I'm not sure why I keep torturing myself- the love stories are just too short-lived these days.

DOROTHY Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 03:29 AM EST

I am 78 years old and have watched Days
at least 25 years, but the news of John and Marlena getting fired has me very upset. If they add Bo & Hope & Sami I too will skip future shows.I may anyway.

N B C give Days to A B C and we will give them all the rattings.

This comment is for Hope, please what is your secret of stay so thin for all these years!

Mari Fri, Nov 21, 2008 at 01:54 PM EST

I haven't watched in 10 yrs but I remember. My fave couple was Jack and Jennifer--I stopped watching when they married, also because I joined the military. Then last year, my boyfriend of 8 years died in a car accident and I had a case of temporary insanity. I looked for distractions and found a site called Devoted to Deveraux and was hooked again. I got to relive all their adventures--and they were GOOD! And when Kayla lost Steve, I felt kindred to her because she was angry, too and got to have revenge where, for me--there's no revenge against a rain-swept road. I watched, sun-up to sundown--I sat in Pajamas, sometimes I watched from Sun-up to Sun-up--drinking vast amounts of coffee until i finished, then I started over again. Now? I might watch a clip every so often, just because. These characters, when written well, are like old friends. They show up every day. They're therapeutic and if they were given more attention, could be great. The way they used to be. Best of Luck, DOOL!

Having been a Days addict since it started, I have hung in there through numerous weird plots including the horrific black and white Nicole episodes. Now that they are extending their contract, please writers, give us something for a plot. For the last couple of weeks, there has been no plot. Also, where are our main characters, Marlena, Steve, Kayla, Lexie, Abe? These relatively new characters are boring. Who cares what happens with them? Is this the best the writers can come up with? After all this time, I am getting tired of Days and keep watching with the hope that a decent story line will emerge. There's no excuse for this poor, poor writing since NBC pays $1.7 million weekly for this show. Give me back my Days!!!

Billie Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 08:55 PM EST

I've been watching Days since I was in the womb! My grandmother and mother watched it. I'm almost 34 years old have watched this show religiously. I swear, I don't know what I would do if it ever goes off. I really can't imagine it. I don't even know what other shows come on at 1 PM. When I was in high school, I would make it home just in time to see the last 15 minutes. I still knew everything that was going on. This was before the internet!

I've been a fan through the good and bad story lines.

The 2 worst parts of the show was when they brought the actor who played the original Roman back as some guy named Alex. Roman's character was now being played by the man who use to play Chris Kozichek(spelling?)

The original Adrienne came back to play Mimi's mother Bonnie. Then she came back again to play Adrienne again.
I hate getting use to a different person playing a character in the 1st place. I really hate when they try to pass a person off as someone new on the show.

phemy Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 08:51 PM EST

I've watched since the earliest days and adore the concept of DOOL as a virtual family I have been a part of. It is important to preserve the core characters and contribute regular and meaningful storylines to Doug/Julie and Maggie and all the main family members. It is also important to not recast the actors, but stick with your originally selected archetypes and also to hire only writers who have studied the entire overview of the series from the start to keep enriching our experience by adding pertinent details and complimentary links to past and future aims instead of dropping in new characters and situations that do not work with our existing personalities. If I could have only one revist to Salem's past, it would be for Doug and Julie to reopen Doug's Place and bring back his joyful sidekick Robert LeClaire, artfully played by the incredible Robert Clary, and to again hear them sing together saloon classics like "Those Were The Days."

twinny Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 07:33 PM EST

I've watched Days as long as I can remember. Probably since it's beginning. I think I started watching because they killed off one of my favorite characters on another popular soap called "The Doctors". The character's name was Broc Hayden. I cried for days when he was killed, and vowed to never watch another Soap. But, then, there was Days.

I remember when they had Marlena murdered. I felt like I was re-living my soap nightmare over again. And then, due to fan outrage...Marlena was miraculously saved and it was her twin sister that died.

I have loved Days ever since.

Pyewacket Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 09:07 AM EST

I have been a Days fan since it first started in 1965. I used to watch it with my grandmother. Wow that is 45 years of story lines both good and bad, but what would I do with out my Days fix. Thanks NBC for leaving it on just a little bit longer.

SIBULELE Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 04:47 AM EST

when will the truth come out about Claire.

Kitty Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 12:31 AM EST

Favorites:

Cruise of Deception
Jack and Jennifer's Wedding
Buried Alive

You can DVR Days every day and get through it in five minutes. I don't like how storylines are just dropped or end WAY more quickly than you knew they were intended to. I've been watching for 18 years and I don't think it's ever been this bad.

HOPEFROMSTL Tue, Nov 18, 2008 at 11:54 PM EST

I LOVE DAYS AND WAYCH EVERY DAY FOR ALMOST 20 YEARS NOW.....DONT TAKE THAT AWAY FROM ME !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kim Tue, Nov 18, 2008 at 02:38 PM EST

I came back to Days in 2006 when Stephen Nichols and Mary Beth Evans returned as Steve and Kayla Johnson. Since that time I have been disappointed time and again by the crummy writing and lack of follow through on stories. I was extremely hopeful when Ed Scott came on board as EP, only to have him run out of town by new writer Dena Higley. Since that time (roughly April or so?) Days has become unwatchable. Higley has no love for my couple, Steve and Kayla, and I have no love for my show anymore either.

SaraS Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 07:13 PM EST

YES!! I used to watch in the Marlena/John days.. oh how I wanted them together. But then they gave us that whole sickeningly sweet hot tub scene with strawberries and, yeah... that was too much. :) But I loved Austin and Carrie (where did she go??) and Sami, while I hated her, I felt sorry for her. Couldn't believe she could've ended up with either guy. And Bo and Hope--whatever happened to these two?

Can you do like a bullet-point update on PopWatch? Now THAT would be awesome!!!

Jaz Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 04:35 PM EST

I got hooked the summer of '70; first scene I saw was Laura Horton gazing at baby Michael in his high chair and wondering if anybody could tell...that Bill was his daddy! Not Mickey! (deja vu?) Anyhow, it's been a great ride. Loved 'Doug's Place' where they actually had real singers who performed--at least four of them over some time--besides Doug himself. All time most hated moment: when they had Kimberley lose her full term baby in order to break her and Shane up. Some of the most harrowing: when Mickey lost his memory and Dr. Tom who was searching for his lost son, kept missing him by inches! Akk! I actually think going to a full hour has hurt the show over time. Half an hour is plenty--look at many of the prime time shows. Major pet peeve: the music has gone WAY down hill. Where are the themes? Don't give us the same 'suspenseful' bass fiddle every time we see a villain, please. Where are the great love songs associated with couples? 'Tonight, I celebrate my love for you.'

bootsycolumbia Thu, Nov 13, 2008 at 06:59 PM EST

I haven't watched it in years, but I used to love Days. That and AW kept me going up to high school. What a combo! My best memory of Days was a storyline involving Bo, Hope, Stefano, and Roman back in the 80s. It ran for about a year and I think Roman got killed during the course of the storyline. I don't remember the name of the storyline, but my sister and I watched for a solid year to see how it turned out. I mourned Roman's death, and when he was played by the ham who now plays John Black, I almost stopped watching the show. I stuck with it for awhile but by the time Marlena started getting possessed by the devil I had to give up. Marlena was too sensible to be possessed by the devil. Even in soap opera world that was a ridiculous storyline. I also fondly remember John De Lancie as Eugene, my favorite character ever. His romance with Calliope was so sweet. He went on to play Q on Star Trek:TNG. When he left the show, I actually cried. Yes, I am that big of a nerd.

bamabunny Thu, Nov 13, 2008 at 05:37 PM EST

I was about to ask...what's Luis from "Passions" doing with Sami? I haven't watched a soap in years and am just curious as to WTF is going on?!?!

Caleb Thu, Nov 13, 2008 at 05:33 PM EST

I must say that I did enjoy the murdering of the Salemites... until it turned into a lame Survivor twist. The show never fully recovered from there and I lost interest, not even wanting to check in every friday. Which is a shame because my high school dream was (hahahahhaa) to write for Days... oh well.

Caleb Thu, Nov 13, 2008 at 05:30 PM EST

I too remember the days of the 90s...
I started watching in the summer between 4th and 5th grade when Vivian was killing Carly's patients and framing her for it. Then she was buried alive. I was hooked...

My favorite storylines were:
The Who Killed Curtis Reed mystery (did it turn out to be Stefano? Who didn't he kill?)

Maison Blanche (I didn't even know who this mystery woman was for the longest time cause I'd never seen Hope before)

Sammy/Austin/Carrie/Lucas love quad. To this day, I'm still in love with Carrie.

Aremid and the Woman in White that had the diary that saved John from death by gas just in time!

Marlena's possession and her stint in the early part of it as the Christmas destroyer. Remember when she burned down the Christmas tree in the middle of Salem Place?

Alas, it started to lose my interest around the time they were dealing with the swamp girl. And the jungle madness. And the Princess Gina/Hope personality problems. And the virtual Garden of Eden...

DanOregon Thu, Nov 13, 2008 at 05:04 PM EST

And another thing, once I got a VCR and cable and started taping it - I realized you could fast forward through the thing in about 10 minutes. Such a slow moving show.

DanOregon Thu, Nov 13, 2008 at 05:01 PM EST

Used to watch it when I got back from classes in college and I couldn't afford cable.
Once I realized they continuously recycled story arcs, people getting married, kidnappings, medical emergencies I realized I'd seen enough. But that Stefano was a real greasy bastard. What a sleazeball.

JuliaM Thu, Nov 13, 2008 at 04:06 PM EST

Man, I used to love that show.. I started watching Days right during the buried alive episodes (my boyfriend at the time got me into it).. Loved it, and the possession of Marlena.. Plus how Stefano could never die.. I love the cheesiness of John and his forever arched eyebrow. And Sammy is awesome, of course - never wins in the end, but she at least makes things spicy. I hated the millions of Kristen characters, and all that Princess Gina nonesense (someone give Hope a sandwich!). Lately it's been awful, so even when I have time to catch it, I don't. I'd feel weird about it no longer being on the air, but they need to bring it back to its old wackiness to get my attention again.

Kim Carlton Thu, Nov 13, 2008 at 03:47 PM EST

Man, I had a blast reliving some of those storylines. I still remember Patch as being my firs crush when I was 6. And I remember being terrified of the Salem Stalker (wasn't there a raven feather involved?). I remember when old Roman came back and John (who was conviced he was Roman) had the love affair with Marlena.

mgm Thu, Nov 13, 2008 at 11:47 AM EST

I started watching when I was in jr. high, and even though I work, I read online summaries and try to watch it on SoapNet at night time.

orville Thu, Nov 13, 2008 at 10:04 AM EST

I used to watch up until about a year or so ago. One of my college roommates got me hooked on it (along with Another World, Santa Barbara, and General Hospital) back in the Jack and Jennifer heyday. I stopped watching here and there along the way, but stopped completely about a year ago. None of the storylines were keeping my interest any more. I will admit to leafing through the soap opera magazines in the grocery line to keep up on it sometimes though. I still watch GH, but that might even go by the wayside sometime soon.

Joann Thu, Nov 13, 2008 at 09:57 AM EST

okay -- every one remembers the big brouhaha over Marlena's demonic possession? Does anyone remember when they murdered Marlena? I do. There was such an uproar over her "murder" that they had to create a "twin" that was murdered and Marlena was put into protective custody with Roman Brady. I was hooked!

jen Thu, Nov 13, 2008 at 08:28 AM EST

I love Days, I've watched for over 25 years now & I still love it, with that said the writing of late has gotten a little poor. They are not wrapping up some story lines as they should, but any show that can make me hate one character strongly for years and years has my full devotion (Sami, she is so conniving & I just hate how she always weasels out of it all & comes out ok in the end, argh i hate her!!) I will continue to watch until I die or the show gets pulled, but I do wish they would come up with some new writers

Cory Thu, Nov 13, 2008 at 08:23 AM EST

For a while I watched Days everyday-to much ridicule from my family and friends (since I was 18 at the time). Alison Sweeney truly is one of the MVPs, and I loved Belle (once Martha Madison replaced Kirsten Storms), Hope, Mimi, Nicole, Patrick, Jennifer, and Marlena. However, the story lines started driving me insane (damn you, Kate, and your stupid meddling ways! Belle, you can do so much better than Phillip! Bo, Hope's way hotter than Billie! How many times to Sami and Lucas have to break up?). I still watched, but then one week Kate and Lucas argued...for an entire week of episodes. It wasn't like different arguments over the course of the week, but the exact same argument in the same scene that took an entire week. That Friday's episode was the last I watched, and I'm not sure they ever stopped arguing. They could still be arguing for all I know. But those types of creative errors are the reason I no longer watch the show, and I sort of miss it.

Elizabeth Thu, Nov 13, 2008 at 06:53 AM EST

Past viewer - but still peeved at NBC for cancelling "Another World". And I miss Santa Barbara...

Giselle Thu, Nov 13, 2008 at 06:41 AM EST

Bawled my eyes out when Tom Horton died. Still get weepy just thinking about it.

Thu, Nov 13, 2008 at 02:46 AM EST

I loved that show!! Sami Brady is the business!! I can't believe poor Alison Sweeney never got her due at the Daytime Emmys...

Betty Thu, Nov 13, 2008 at 01:43 AM EST

I can't believe the buried alive story is your favorite too! I couldn't wait for the next episode of Vivian torturing Carly with that walkie talkie. Ah the memories. I hope they don't cancel the show. It's an institution. Anything they replaced it with would be just as crappy. Stick with the crap we know. Go Sami!

Debbie Thu, Nov 13, 2008 at 12:59 AM EST

I have been watching since it was in black and white!! I still love the show and granted there has been some lulls along with high peaks.. I love the Horton's and Brady's good honest folks with regular problems and then the exageration with buried alive yeah goofy but exciting. I cry when someone is killed off (Shawn Brady)like they were part of my family and friends. Especially when Tom Horton passed away. I love the flashbacks to the old days. I love Bo and Hope, Kayla and Patch, Marlena and John please bring the old John back! This soap lets me come home from work and unwind!! silly or not, funny or sad, happy and laughing! I love this show Thank you for renewing this show. P.s. I have dozens of family and friends that watch this show. My only wish is to move storylines along good the fans will always be here.

Jimmie Thu, Nov 13, 2008 at 12:12 AM EST

I've been watching Days since 1970. From Bill and Laura, to Mickey and Maggie, to Doug and Julie, to Tony and Anna, Roman and Marlena, And even Caliope and Eugene. I have seen some ups and downs. Remeber Salem Place? The outdoor set? The show is not what it once was, but its still MY show. Remember when Bo was a hero? Well, he may not have been showing it lately, but I'm sure he still is. Television is a better place with Days of Our Lives in it!

AAR Thu, Nov 13, 2008 at 12:01 AM EST

I've watched Days practically since birth- I called it PeteBoHope ("Time for PeteBoHope Mommy?"). I loved Patch and Kayla, Bo and Hope and, of course, Jack and Jennifer. My favorite epsiode ever is still J&J's crazy dude ranch wedding. Recently I was bored at Wiki-ed Days, and I realized what's wrong with it now- Where are the Hortons? Now, granted, I haven't seen Days in several years, but my sister watches so I have vague ideas of what's going on. I think what Days needs to do is get back to its roots and focus on one or two families- the Hortons and the Bradys.

Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 11:22 PM EST

I loved Bo nd Hope especilly when they were in New Orleans. The writing has been crap for years- I miss the good old Days.

Dave Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 10:29 PM EST

I have watched off and on since the mid-70's when I was a kid and my mother had it on. I watched for 7 years straight from 90-97. I started to check out after Marlena's possession and when a different actress played Jennifer Horton/Devareux. The DeMira's are notorious, but Lawrence Alamain was the best villian in the history of Days, and his demented Aunt Vivian wasn't far behind. I liked Victor K. when he has more shady and corrupt. I always enjoyed the child time warp...like when the Brady twins, Sammy and Eric, went away to Colorado when they were 8 and came back in a year at age 16. I watch it now maybe a few times a year...got a beautiful wife and 4 kids, so not much time for DOOL anymore. I will kind of miss it when it's finally gone, but I think it's DAY has passed. I remember spending hours talking to my mother about the Horton and Brady family histories, as if we were related to them.

Hope Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 10:08 PM EST

I have been watching Days on and off since 1995 and it's either really good or really bad. TPTB always seem to loose focus.
The show also doesn't utilize it's good actors. Why was Billy Warlock on the sidelines and given such a bad storyline during his return? Who does the show have that is better than him? That really bothered me back in 2006. He is amazing!
What is up with the Hortons being removed from center?
Get rid of Melanie and Nicole and more Lucas/Sami and Bo/Hope!

Suzanne Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 09:55 PM EST

I've been watching days since I was five years old. I come home every day to see this show. And yes, Days has been in a slump forever. Here's the deal Day's Writers: We love romance (Bo & Hope), (John & Marlena) (Lucas & Sammy). Stop putting people together and breaking them up. Its too confusing. Pick two characters and bring them together in a fun, odd way like you did in the 80s. We need Villains besides Stefano. Real, mean villains that you love to hate. We need storylines that are believable or totally crazy like before. What you have now, sucks. Please get rid of Melanie and NIck. (BORING). Also, bring some real mystery to the show. You are too predictable. okay, those are my thoughts.

Melinda65 Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 09:35 PM EST

I grew up watching CBS soaps with my mom, but when my sister went to college in the early 80s, she introduced the rest of us to Days. I watched it for the next 15 or so years, until the Princess Gina crap finally drove me away. I loved Bo and Hope, Patch and Kayla, Shane and Kim, Eugene and Calliope, Jack and Jennifer, Marlena and Roman (and then Marlena and John) and Tom and Alice. During the last several years I'll check on the show here and there, and be disappointed every time. I miss the "old Days" (along with Another World and Santa Barbara, but that's another story.)

Rebekah Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 09:20 PM EST

I can honestly say I have been watching Days since birth. My mom started watching while she was pregnant with me. My favorite storyline was Adrienne's recovery from rape with Justin at her side. I taped Days over my high school graduation tape accidently and still hear about it. That was 15 years ago. And yes, I DVR it daily. The storylines have gotten worse. I am tired of the stuff with the younger characters. Get rid of Melanie please!

Jackie Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 08:48 PM EST

I started watching when I was 10, which was 15 years ago. I was captured by the Austin-Carrie-Sami fiasco and felt that Sami and Lucas were destined for each other, even though they were "only friends" coniving to get Austin and Carrie apart. I was overjoyed when they finally hooked up for reals.
However, I had to stop watching after the Salem Stalker storyline. That just got to be too much. And I didn't have the time anymore either.

kitty08 Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 08:39 PM EST

Am a big Bo & Hope fan but only tune in once in a while now b/c they shoulc be driving story and not be glorified extras. That is the big problem now- the gross underuse of the vets. When the Ed Scott/Dena Higley showdown happened Dena should have went. She is ruining the show again. The stories make no sense & forget about history. Under her it is to be ignored. This is why the show has gone from being must see to must flee.

D Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 08:31 PM EST

The cruise of deception is my favorite memory from Days!

Cindy Mohareb Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 07:36 PM EST

I have been a Days fan for a long time - since pre-teen time. I still look in from time to time to see what is happening. I am glad to see some "old-timers" come back as I believe they have been sorely missed. My favourite time was the early Patch and Kayla days. Loved that! I especially loved Rick Biggs as Patch's confident and friend...Dr. Marcus Hunter. I had a chance to meet Rick after he was doing Babylon 5. We sort of became friends and he is sorely missed. With the Patch and Kayla storyline currently part of the show again, it is too bad that we cannot experience that trio relationship again. Still I have the memories. :)

Haven't watched since probably the late eighties, but my fav stories were Bo & Hope, Roman and Marlena and Eugene and Calliope. Anyone remember the Salem Stalker storyline?

MindBodySurf Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 07:07 PM EST

Classic storylines/milestones: Marlena's (real) twin sister; Doug and Julie's courtship; Patch stepping aside so that his kid brother Jack could wed Kayla; the return of Bo and Hope; Allison Sweeney as Sammy.
Guilty pleasures: Caliope and Dr. Tom Horton Sr. opening a beat poetry club; Shane's daughter Eve romancing her pimp Nick; Marlena's alien twins!

I started watching DAYS when I was in college (it was on between classes) during the trial of Sami's rapist. Having never watched a soap before I had no idea that there were no quick resolutions at the end of each episode and 14 years later, I am still watching.
The writing has been dull lately and all of the screen time is going to the younger set. There needs to be a balance with more veterans in front burner storylines. And they need to stop with the introduction of new characters. At least the character of Brady is returning tomorrow (even if he will be played by a different actor).

I've been a Days fan all of my life and as long as there's a Sami Brady, I will continue to be one.

My favorite storyline ever was Eileen Davidson as Kristen/Susan and three other "twins". I also loved Aremid, Paris and most of the "location" shoots.

My advice in the next couple years would be to just write better long-term stories. Lately everything seems so schizophrenic.

I'd also like to see a new family come to town because the Bradys, Hortons, and Roberts are so tangled up that they're out of unrelated people to date.

Days is a great show that I still love. Love pld Jack and Jennifer, love psossed Marlena. Nicole is my favorite character now. She is the best thing going for it. And I know the writer has this happening in her real life, but the autistic child's story line is Boring!

It was always my mom's favorite too. I used to watch it religiously when I was on summer vacation in High School and while I was in University. But then I started to work where I didn't have afternoons off and I stopped watching. My dad used to watch it on his lunch hour and I'd make him keep me filled in. I do find myself watching if I'm home sick or during Christmas vacation. I remember my roommates and I watching the episode with the Greta Coronation Massacre and I had to go to class before the end so we taped it and as soon as I got home I had to watch it like twice. So much carnage for a daytime show! It had the parental advisory and everything.

Days ugh who cares there hasn't been a good soap on since Santa Barbara. The world of soaps stopped for me the day that was cancelled.

My mom used to watch Days while I was at school. I watched when I was home with her during the summer months. Grew up had kids and watched it mysself everyday, my daughters followed me at it. But since going to work, put a crimp in watching it, haven't really understood whats going on with it in years. My daughters have the same problem. I do know that Sammy was born just before or after my grandson (Marlena & my daughter were pregnant together), and he's not that old! Always used to wish my kids grew as fast as their kidss did.

The demonic possession storyline used to give me nightmares when I was a little kid.

My mother watched Days from day one, so I got hooked when I was about 3-4. I also remember when Hope was born and the whole Doug & Julie, Mickey and Maggie, and of course Tom and Alice Horton. I loved the zany days of Bo and Hope, Patch and Kayla, Shane and Kim, Jack and Jennifer, etc... Days was a huge part of my childhood and helped me bond with my mother since I would come home from school (long before VCRs & DVRs) every afternoon and ask what happen on the program today. We always talked about the show as though the charcaters were real people/friends. I haven't watch a complete episode in about 2 years, but I will be sad when the last sand falls through the hour glass.

My mom has watched Days since it's very beginning and I'm glad for her sake that it's still going, if only for a short while longer. Due to her loyalty, I've seen quite a bit of Days growing up, namely the Marlena demon, the ridiculous age jump of Sammy and Eric, and my favorite tv character from childhood...Patch.

I've been watching DAYS, off and on, since the early '70s. I remember when Hope was a baby! It has ebbed and flowed over the years but it does seem to be on a continuing downward spiral. I miss the romance and adventure that was the hallmark of the show at it's peak. The super couples were legendary - and plentiful. Nowadays they seem to rely much more on sleaze and steer away from any compelling romantic couples. I don't understand it - it's not that they don't have the talent in the cast. Ali Sweeney and James Scott have amazing chemistry - but currently they are sharing zero screen time and are seemingly paired with other people. It's an incredible waste. And they certainly still have the tried and true couples of Bo & Hope, Patch & Kayla, Tony & Anna - yet they are rarely seen and when they are, seem to be background filler.
So I agree that it seems they need to get rid of the current head writer and find someone who either knows the characters or will learn the history.

Days was and is my grandma's show, so my brother and I have been watching it our entire lives. Once we started school and she was no longer our babysitter, she would tape it for us (it comes on at 1:00 on the West coast, so we were still in school). To this day we still talk about the buried alive era...it's unforgetable, really. And what about the Hope and Bo saga?? And Stephan! Ok, I could go on all day....Days is the best soap ever, there I said it. Now if only they would put it on DVD so we could enjoy forever......

I am a HUGE Days fan, in particular, a Bo and Hope fan. I've been watching for over 40 years, as my mother watched while I was a baby. In my opinion, backburnering the vets continues to be a problem. I don't want to watch the teen mess and the ratings show that. They need to get back to basics...love in the afternoon.

I'm an admitted Days-addict, and it's the only soap I've ever watched. However, I've been increasingly annoyed by the lack of effort put into the writing, and the elimination of an entire generation of characters (Shawn, Belle, and Mimi all in a short time). Plus, is anyone else bothered how soap operas just seem to trade actors? In this picture, the actor used to be on Passions, and I can find former Days actors in the same time slot on ABC and CBS. It's just strange - with all the out-of-work actors, why recycle so much?

I watched Days from the womb up until a few years ago. Getting a job probably had something to do with it... I used to tape it on random Fridays just to see what's up but by now I barely recognize anyone. I have fond memories of Eileen Davidson playing three characters at once - Kristen, the nun, and the chick she stole the baby from, right? Also, Marlena possessed by the devil = best summer ever.

I have been watching since birth, I guess. I still watch off and on...Mostly off...:( But, I loved the buried alive story also. We used to rush through lunch in college just to watch Vivian torment poor Carly. There were probably 15 or 20 of us that would huddle around the Dorm T.V. My favorite all time couple would be Jack and Jennifer (1.0). I love a "good" girl and a "bad" guy. But, they botched it this last time they brought them back, and that is when I became a "casual" watcher. If they want to fix it, they need to move story quicker and give us some couples with "sizzle"...

My time with Days was in the 80s--my university days. I still love me some Patch and Kayla. Of course, I've watched Y&R everyday since grade 10, and continue to do so. It's a great way to unwind after a work day (does that sound legit enough?)!

Barre Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 04:42 PM EST

I, like you, have been watching the show since around the age of five. Mother got he hooked, I had morning kindergarten, so I could spend my afternoons in Salem. And they didn't know I was gay? However, I am glad it's been renewed, I cant imagine NBC without Days... its unimaginable. The 90s were the heyday of this show, sadly the last few years have not been so kind, its starting to show its age. My idea to save it? Get rid of Dena Higley who's writing the show and bring someone who knows the characters and the history.
