'Brothers & Sisters': Bringing funny back (Yeah!)

Nov 10, 2008, 01:34 PM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: 'Brothers & Sisters', Television

Brothersandsisters_l Finally! After a multi-week slump, Brothers & Sisters delivered an episode last night that justified my long-term adoration of the Walker clan and their wacky-melodramatic shenanigans. (Justin, please don't throw a hissy fit about the way I professed my love, okay?) Of course, the opening 15 minutes had me a little worried that I'd have to write another installment of my weekly series: "What the hell is going on in the B&S writers' room?" There was the gratuitous opening shower sequence with Rebecca. There was Saul's exceedingly lame "I'm out of the closet now" response to Nora's "Screw Holly!" exclamation. And there was Rebecca's "thank you" to Justin's "I love you," the same exact exchange we saw between Natalie Zea's Karen Darling and Blair Underwood's Simon Elder just a few weeks back on fellow Greg Berlanti-produced ABC drama Dirty Sexy Money. (Just because you copy from yourself doesn't make it right!) The only positive, really, was hearing Suzanne Vega's "As You Are Now" during the opening sequence.

But while the opening quarter of the episode lacked that patented B&S brand of humor, the writers more than made up for it with a magic-themed anniversary party for Tommy and Julia that jumped from one hilarious (Nora-centric) scenario to the next. Perhaps funniest of all was the way Nora introduced sons Tommy and Justin to her date George Lafferty (incognito as "Elton Richards"), running off a list of the former's personal and professional accomplishments, then adding, "and this is my son Justin." I don't know what made me howl harder, the awkward silence that followed Nora's terse description of her recovering addict son, or Justin's blunt declaration, "Well that about sums it up." Either way, the moment of pure comedy only primed the pump for Nora's later attempts to lie to her kids about the true identity of her date, who just so happened to be the widower of Nora's late husband's second significant mistress (!). First runner-up for funniest conversation had to be Sarah's question to her mother ("Have you guys done the dance with no pants?"), and the way she tried to squirm out of the subject matter when talk turned to her own sex life. Nora: "You're the one who brought sex up." Sarah: "Well, I regret it." And then, of course, we had Nora completely dismissing the results of her tea-leaf reading while simultaneously urging the fortune teller to cough up more predictions. Priceless!

Sure, a lot of the plot developments at the party didn't make a lot of sense -- would Tommy really invite Holly to a family gathering given her history with Nora? what advantage was there to Nora sneaking George into a party under an assumed identity? -- but when the writing is crisp and funny, it makes it so much easier to forget common sense and just enjoy the ride.

Funny business aside, a lot of dramatic advancement occurred this week as well. Both of Robert's story arcs made me dislike him a little more than I already do. I understood his outrage that Kitty would mess up their relationship with a stellar birth mother, but how come he feels the need to teach a lesson every time he has a fight? His "If you're not ready to have your heart broken, you're not ready to be a parent" was casually beastly considering Kitty only lost the baby she was carrying a few months back. And his sense of righteous indignation in all his dealings with Kevin this week didn't sit right, either. Don't hire a complete neophyte to be your communications director if you're not expecting a little on-the-job learning curve, dude!

Am I the only one hoping Robert eventually chooses politics over Kitty, and frees her up for more fun nights out with Kevin and Sarah and Scotty? Who acted like more of a whiny baby this episode: Robert or Justin? And finally, what in the world do you think dastardly Holly said to George to get him to flee the party? Discuss these subjects, and the genius "YOU'RE DATING RYAN'S DAD?"/Heimlich maneuver revelation scenes in the comments section below.

I love the show - I love the interactions in the family. They all seem so natural to me.
And I LOVE Robert - he has an edge and he is independent, probably flawed character but his feelings for Kitty are true and I love seeing them together. I'd probably stop watching if he left...

Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 01:24 PM EST

i should really start watching this show.

val Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 06:51 PM EST

I love this show! I can't wait to watch every week. The writing is A+. I think either Saul knows something about Ryan he will not disclose, and/or I think Holly has a reason she doesn't want Ryan appearing. She has something up her sleeve. Maybe she knows what William Walker was keeping from everybody with that land he owned, secret bank accounts, passwords, drawing the money out of the business accounts, etc. Ryan is a thorn in her side and she ran George away in order to keep Ryan away. I can't stand Holly! I want Nora to knock her out! I want Tommy to wake up and open his eyes. As for Robert, he is a driven politician. He stated in an earlier episode that he is the most ambitious person you will ever meet. I think his meeting with the Governor was about putting his ducks in a row for the 2012 election and he doesn't want Kitty to know because she doesn't fully support his running for president. It makes her upset, however he has every intention of running again. I love this show!

lljorganxhi Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 03:47 PM EST

I couldn't believe that nora wouldn't pull kitty aside, instead of running to find george. Other than that, except the deja-vu of "I love you, thank you", the show was better than the previous episodes.

Greatie/fort Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 01:53 PM EST

I love the show,
But I am so sick of Holly beating up Nora!
I can see Robert is getting to be just awful.
He and Holly should marry.

Greatie/fort Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 01:38 PM EST

I don't like Robert anymore.
and that 'becca is gonna be just like her mom!!

Edward Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 07:27 AM EST

Some of you people act like you can do better atleast the person who recapped the episode enjoyed it for what it is unlike some of you who pin pointed each and every flaw.Just don't watch the show next time.Your propabley one less viewer the show needs anyways.

Angie Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 12:58 PM EST

Hmmm - interesting concept that Ryan is Rebecca's soulmate instead of Justin. There's still the eeewww factor since she'll have slept with 1/2 brothers. Although the eeeww of Lena with Justin and Tommy is there, it doesn't feel the same since neither ended up with her, whereas there would be the implication that the triangle would have to see each other for a long time.

Angie Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 12:54 PM EST

Justin and Rebecca were dating in real life a while ago - not sure of their current status. The 'I Love You - Thank You' thing is from the episode of Friends between Ross and Emily. The show seems a bit adrift right now. Quality cast and writing, but no sense of continuity from one week to the next. We know we'll meet Ryan because the role has been cast.

Why the complaining. I think it's a good show. It's funny and there is always drama. I love Kitty and Robert, I don't want Robert to go anywhere. Who cares if some stuff isn't believable, it's a frigging TV show...just sit back and enjoy it for what it is.

LLJ Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 11:03 AM EST

The chemistry between Nora and George was greater than any of the other couples who appeared on Sunday's episode. I would not be suprised if Robert was really cheating on Kitty and just tossed out that story to throw Kevin off. Finally, I miss the old B&S. On a scale of 1-5, this season has been a 2.5.

Dream Out Loud Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 10:41 AM EST

Sorry, Leena, but is it so evil if more than 1/2 of Californians of all people are in support of it? It's scary to think you need Hollywood to help your cause. Deal with it.

George Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 10:29 AM EST

Scotty wasn't there because the actor is, with the producers blessing, working on another project. Holly being there drove me nuts but since it was Tommy's anniversary and she is his business partner it makes sense.

The whole Rebecca-Justin fight seemed soooo forced that it was ridiculous.

KrisFisch Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 08:33 AM EST

The point of having George go under a pseudonym is so there would be no disappointment if he decided after meeting the Walker children that he still did not want to tell Ryan. Instead of telling all the children he was Ryan's dad and acting like it was some sort of interview, they chose to not disclose his identity so the Walker children wouldn't then wonder what they did wrong if he didn't want to tell Ryan.

confused Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 04:17 AM EST

Please explain to me what evidence the Walker's have the Ryan in William's son?

Leena Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 04:16 AM EST

Why wasn't this episode scheduled for last week? When maybe it could have made a difference in defeating the evil prop 8?

so Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 04:11 AM EST

where is scotty ? i love the guy, they should make a scotty/kevin spin off...

RJ Mon, Nov 10, 2008 at 11:37 PM EST

Really liked the chemistry between Nora & George hope there is more to them meeting than just parents of offsprings of Wm. Walker:) Kevin is ALWAYS whinning I like Robert. What did that witch Holly tell George. The episode was a hoot.

Amanda Mon, Nov 10, 2008 at 11:35 PM EST

Holly was at the party because she is Tommy's business partner. They ARE friends. The rest of the family has issues with her, he does not.

Leah Mon, Nov 10, 2008 at 11:18 PM EST

I personally LOVED when the B&S found out that Elton Richards was really George Lafferty. They all acted like a much of whiny teenagers starved for attention and I loved every single second of it.

Also, kuddos for how many times they all inwardly gasped at the name, Elton.

Snarf Mon, Nov 10, 2008 at 10:55 PM EST

Gotta admit I'm curious to find out what Holly said to George to make him flee.

Jelana Mon, Nov 10, 2008 at 10:09 PM EST

Ooh, just thought of a new potential twist on the Ryan story. Maybe Ryan already knows that he's a Walker and can provide details about the relationship between William and his mother. It's plausible -- he might not have pursued anything out of respect to his dad. And it is the only way I can really think of that we'll get details on that relationship.

Karen Mon, Nov 10, 2008 at 08:15 PM EST

Although I often can expect to get a laugh out of most episodes, I didn't find this episode funny at all. The opening scene with Justin was very creepy and just plain stupid on all levels. To let yourself into your girlfriend's bathroom and startle her is brainless. And then to expect an "I love you" when you've irritated her ? I usually like the character of Justin but this scene put me off. Why doesn't he work or go to school? I agree with other posters re: why was Holly at the party!? Why would Nora contact George in the first place? (previous episode)To me the answer is poor writing. I hope it gets better but as long as Holly is at every family event I think the show will continue to go down hill.

jfms777 Mon, Nov 10, 2008 at 07:24 PM EST

Calista Flockhart's "Ally McBeal" was arguably the strongest female role on tv. And she was masterful. Her role as B&S's "Kitty" is weak, sniveling, and annoying. What an utter disappointment. They could kill her off, or banish her back to New York, and she would not be missed.

Mia Mon, Nov 10, 2008 at 07:18 PM EST

I agree with Sweet.
You can see it a mile away, Sarah's new company is going to find out that Ojai foods is the WORSE offender in the US.
And hence, another round of brother and sister and Holly fighting. BORING!!

pelon Mon, Nov 10, 2008 at 06:16 PM EST

still have a BIG problem with Justin and Rebecca. their characters are creepy. no chemistry and no sparks. don't think it's just the writing ~ it's the actors. they're boring. and blah. and boring some more. Justin is such a wuss. Rebeccas is so 'poor lost soul' that now it's gotten really old. just wanna slap her. liked George and Norah together. was kinda hoping they would click and maybe have a reason to bring the 'new' son into the fold. just get rid of Robert. don't like him. never did. probably never will. and geez! stop making Kevin such a whiny, weasel of a guy. there's nothing likeable about him. he's just a gay version of Robert. and nobody wants THAT! Sarah still rocks my world. she's just the best reason to watch 'B&S'.

Japhy Mon, Nov 10, 2008 at 05:41 PM EST

Not really that funny - the magic was cute and charming but lack of logic -- still mucho annoying (ditto why Holly at the party? like Sarah didn't know and brought her boy toys/co-founders? Kevin is that stupid even though he was a big corporate lawyer? Ditto Kitty that stupid about George/Elton @ party or that Nora wouldn't pull Kitty over? Kids can write better stuff than this, I mean really! It's an insult to fans, which is why the audience keeps dropping.

Matt Mon, Nov 10, 2008 at 05:29 PM EST

This show falls into the ridiculous more and more each week. Nora would race out of the room rather than pull Kitty aside and explain to her what she's doing with "Elton?" And Kitty would just dump the beans when she sees him and says, "George?" And Sarah says, "No, this is Elton." She's not smart enough to get that something's going on? The Rebecca-Justin (does he have a job?) thing is still creepy and totally boring. And no, neither Robert nor Justin is the whiniest. KEVIN is ALWAYS the whiniest. He's so damn self-righteous and annoying. And Holly keeps getting painted as the "b*tch," but she's really not at all. Nora just can't get past anything with her.

robert Mon, Nov 10, 2008 at 05:08 PM EST

definitely one of the best episodes of the season. Brothers & Sisters is back in fine form. still my favorite show on the air. really hoping justin and rebecca work out and that sarah's company gets off the ground...UGH..HATE HOLLY!!!!

fanfan Mon, Nov 10, 2008 at 05:00 PM EST

Add me to those who immediately thought of Mrs. Doubtfire and fell out laughing!!!

starchild Mon, Nov 10, 2008 at 04:48 PM EST

There was a time (the first season) when most of the scenes had a logic and you didn't have to suspend belief to enjoy them. What happened and what came out of the charactes' mouths were believable. This is the difference between the first season and now. Kitty behaved like Ally McBeal and you're dogging Robert?

Sean Mon, Nov 10, 2008 at 04:20 PM EST

Is it me or do Patricia Wettig and Sally Field look like they are smiling when they get to face off against each other? There scenes are most the most entertaining of them all! I think we need to be indulged and have the two of them have a roll in the mud ala Alexis/Crystal! And um why is Scotty always sent off to work at these grand events... grrr I still say they spouses - Scotty, Robert, and Julia - need to have a revolt and tell them all to shut up in a comedic turn of events. :-)

Katie Mon, Nov 10, 2008 at 04:15 PM EST

I loved this episode. Mr. Slezak - I also cracked up at Justin's, "Well that about sums it up." Hahahaha.
I was completely incredulous at Holly being at the party. Why?
2Cents - The kids aren't that interesting so it doesn't bother me that they're rarely around, but I would like more Scotty!!

Shannon D Mon, Nov 10, 2008 at 03:47 PM EST

I absolutely love Rob Lowe and always have...he can stay forever. They can kill Holly off though. I the chemistry between Nora and George is fantastic. Cannot get enough of this show!

graeme Mon, Nov 10, 2008 at 03:47 PM EST

flockhart was perfection tonight.

Matt Mon, Nov 10, 2008 at 03:46 PM EST

I have to agree with Slezak on this episode. It was so well paced, so interesting, well written, and quick witted. For a second there I thought maybe they were allowed to borrow a writer or two from Desperate Housewives(which was stellar for the umpteen consecutive week) to put some punch into the storyline. It will be interesting to see if this continues, or if it recedes back to blandville. It appears as if some new characters may enter the fracas for a few weeks to shake up things.

Fishpaw Mon, Nov 10, 2008 at 03:42 PM EST

Robert is up to something. Ever since he dropped out of the election for Pres, he just acts like his s**t don't stink or the Almighty. Time for him to go off somewhere. He practically begged Kevin to come work for him and he treats him like crap at every turn. I'm not sure what Holly said to George but I know in the end Nora will get her.

2cents Mon, Nov 10, 2008 at 03:25 PM EST

Let's really shake the family up and have Rebecca be the surrogate mother for Robert and Kitty's baby!

Zet Mon, Nov 10, 2008 at 03:24 PM EST

New drinking game. A glass of Ohai wine for every time someone asks, "Where's Scotty?"

JRay Mon, Nov 10, 2008 at 03:22 PM EST

I thought this week continued the downward trend this season. What was with the magic-themed party? It was just odd. But Slezak, I have to say I was mostly disappointed by the references to Proposition 8, which proved to be an all-too-painful reminder of the defeat of marriage equality at the polls last week. I suspect when the episode was written, everyone assumed that Prop 8 would fail and that they could make Robert look progressive. Sadly, they were wrong. Sigh.

B Mon, Nov 10, 2008 at 03:06 PM EST

Rebecca's future "lover of her life" could be the child she will one day have. Love comes in all forms.

2cents Mon, Nov 10, 2008 at 03:05 PM EST

EVERY week they give an excuse as to why Scotty isn't there. It is really odd. They never say why Sara's kids are not there - or Tommy's kids are not there. It is just really REALLY odd.

Watch for it in every episode. Then take a shot. It's the new B&S game.

junior Mon, Nov 10, 2008 at 02:57 PM EST

It was better than last week but I'm still not pleased with the overall tone and direction. I'm missing late season 1 B&S when the show mixed drama and comedy with more grace.

I Got Soul Mon, Nov 10, 2008 at 02:55 PM EST

As cute as Justin and Rebbecca are, I hope that the forshadowing with the psychic comes sooner rather than later. They're too lovey dovey and need some drama-- hopefully in the form of Ryan. Great episode though! Loved the presence of minorities as well. I hope that Kitty gets her baby but I don't see Robert sticking around. Oh ya, and stop with the excuses for Scotty not being around! He needs more air time.

Slezak Mon, Nov 10, 2008 at 02:45 PM EST

Good catch, Marcy! I fixed my errror!

Mon, Nov 10, 2008 at 02:41 PM EST

Marcy, "late husband's" emphasis on the the apostraphe "s" - possesive? Ring a bell?

Sweet Mon, Nov 10, 2008 at 02:38 PM EST

Here's my prediction about a future storyline. Once Sarah's business blows up,it will come out that Oahi is an extremely ungreen company and there will be some type of dilemma about tanking them.

Sweet Mon, Nov 10, 2008 at 02:34 PM EST

Loved this episode but I too was like why the hell is Holly at the party? I hope Rebecca and Justin don't break up. They are so cute.

Jen Mon, Nov 10, 2008 at 02:31 PM EST

I don't know about you, but when Sally Field started the story how how they met over a guy needing the heimlich at a restaurant, I pictured Mrs. Doubtfire "help is on the way, dear!" and smiled a bit. Good ol Sally Field association

sas Mon, Nov 10, 2008 at 02:22 PM EST

Loved the episode. had all the neurotic behavior we've come to love.

Zet Mon, Nov 10, 2008 at 02:21 PM EST

I'm completely on the "willing suspsension of disbelief" train for B&S. The ride is always fun. But Robert? That boy's gotta get with the program. What's wrong with Kitty wanting to be sure that the baby-mama won't come knocking on the door a few years from now? Nothing! Doesn't he read the parts of the newspaper that don't mention his name? And isn't the foreshadowing with Robert getting a little heavy-handed? How long is Lowe signed up for this gig?

brandi Mon, Nov 10, 2008 at 02:19 PM EST

Slezak, you're not the only one who hopes Robert dumps Kitty. His attitude is horrible, and who is he to lecture her on parenting when we haven't seen or heard anything about his kids since last season? Holly makes my blood boil!

Marcy Mon, Nov 10, 2008 at 02:18 PM EST

I'm confused--how can anyone's date be someone's "late husband"? Doesn't that mean he's dead?
