'Bones': Baked on a Plane

Nov 20, 2008, 09:56 AM | by Whitney Pastorek

Categories: 'Bones', About Last Night, Television

What I want you to do is take off your glasses, shake out your hair, and say, "Mr. Booth, do you know what the penalty is for an overdue book?"

All together now...

Why?

It was another instant classic episode of Bones last night, a forensic adventure in the sky as Brennan and Booth had to MacGyver (MacGruber?) their way through a murder investigation involving a dead mistress cooked like roast pork in the oven of a flight to China, and they had to solve the case before the plane touched down. All Brennan really wanted to do was go look at 40,000-year-old bones in a cave, but the poor thing just can't stop getting herself into the murder mystery biz—much to the delight of at least one old lady back in coach who helped out by donating the contents of her purse to the cause. (Special thanks to the guy with the denture cream.)

I get a big kick out of concepts like this, where the world of a show is forced to constrain itself to a very limited space and still work. Lots of great lines tonight—coach class as "Gitmo," Hodgins getting his "meerkat look," every word out of D.A. Caroline's mouth—and plenty of random stuff to snicker about (like how maybe Sweets shouldn't do karaoke, because at Bones karaoke, people tend to get shot). As for the ongoing Angela-Roxy story line...well, I'll let you guys fight out the merits of that on your own. Also, it's hard to say how I felt about the murderous kid being played for humor when it was really just kinda sad, and I'm wondering how many more times the cause of death is gonna involve some form of blunt force trauma to the head (though I've been assured that the writers are aware of this repetition). Still, any show that uses floating eyeballs as a zippy sight gag and madras shorts as a punchline gets a long leash in my book.

What did you think, PopWatchers? Leave it in the comments.

Why?

Because this is the United States of America.

Movie Lover Tue, Nov 25, 2008 at 09:06 PM EST

Bones is my favorite show. Love Booth and Cam and Caroline as characters (and actors). The whole Angela plus girlfriend thing just seems extraneous and something pulled out of a "House" episode, where they also now have a resident bisexual. (Must be a Fox drama requirement). Just not a very intesting story-line...not "shocking", just boring. Would much rather see Booth and Bones scenes. Or Caroline. Or bring on Ryan O'Neal. I am not yet sure about Sweets as a character, but I know I miss the British psychiatrist (Fry).

TV Watcher Tue, Nov 25, 2008 at 08:57 PM EST

"Bones" is great....liked this episode a lot. Boreanaz is my favorite (loved the massage chair "buzz"). Also, enjoy Caroline the prosecutor who plays tough and funny at the same time so well. I agree that the boy as killer situation was sad and should not have been played as so funny at the end, without some explanation. It made B/B seem insensitive. But, many more positives than negatives. No other show like it on TV.

Mon, Nov 24, 2008 at 01:03 AM EST

Best Crime/Medical Drama on TV. I love this show!!

Cellyta Sun, Nov 23, 2008 at 10:04 PM EST

Seems that the population self-identified as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT) becomes more and more. According to my experience on the site *BiLoves dotcom* (a site for coming out, explore sexuality, etc.), there are about 150 members per day and they are very active. You can imagine. If you come here frequently, you may find what you are looking easily and quickly.

Love this show! Sun, Nov 23, 2008 at 02:24 PM EST

Bones is my favorite show. Emily Deschanel is great, I love how Dr. Brennan is a genius when it comes to her work but completely clueless when it comes to social stuff and pop culture. I actually miss when she used to always say "I don't know what that means", it cracked me up every time. And David Boreanaz is my kinda handsome! The supporting characters are great, especially Angela. I still miss Dr. Goodman but I don't miss Zach at all, although I think Jack needs a new lab buddy. Cam was a good addition but I haven't warmed up to Sweets yet. Booth and Bones are the reason I watch, absolutely love them!

Betty Sun, Nov 23, 2008 at 02:08 PM EST

I was disappointed when Angela and Jack hooked up because it really took away the banter between Angela and Brennan which I really loved. I was hoping we'd get some of that back when they split up but instead we get a 'poof, you're a lesbian now' story line. Give me a break! Why does every bleeping show on TV have to have a gay character?!?

DLT Sun, Nov 23, 2008 at 11:30 AM EST

People being in love or trying to find love is not disturbing. Letting your kids watch a show that has this much violence is.... Maybe you should record this show and then watch it when your kids aren't around to see eyeballs floating in a bin or a burnt corpse stuffed in a microwave. Hate to burst your bubble, but those images will probably hurt your kid more than seeing 2 girls on a date. Grow up.

Jill Sun, Nov 23, 2008 at 02:33 AM EST

If Angela is gay, fine. But all this back and forth on her sexuality is disturbing. Why would Hodgins want to win her back? And furthermore, why are we putting inappropriate topics like that on at 7pm when children are watching???

DLT Sat, Nov 22, 2008 at 05:55 PM EST

Angela and Hodgens need to get back together: their break up was beyond dumb and Ang w/Roxy feels forced. But I think we'll see Hodgens win her back and it scares Ang which is why she asked Roxy to move in. Anyway, the Booth librarian line was awesome!! And I love that the writers respect us fans enough to have Bones' reply be "Why?" and totally not get it... any other show and those 2 would have been making it over the dead body. And how funny was Bones actually shaking out her hair and trying to figure out what the heck Booth was talking about??

mandy Fri, Nov 21, 2008 at 11:02 PM EST

I loved it! The librarian thing was classic Bones, and as cliched as the ending was, I still found that I was biting my nails as they approached the ground. I agree with everone on the angela and roxie plot though. Lose it! And mocking the kid was kinda tactless too.
But overall, a good episode anyway!

Angela Fri, Nov 21, 2008 at 07:40 PM EST

I continue to will Angela and Hodgins back together! I thought the first Roxy episode was funny and enjoyed the twist, but there's just not the same level of chemistry there... Actually there's none! It's starting to feel like a sad filler rather than an intriguing story line. As for Booth and Bones - woah, I completely fell for him with the librarian scene, but in thise case I think the chemistry is more exciting than the actual relationship would be (on screen at least). I agree it should be one of those story lines where the flirting should remain the main focus and the charactors should get together at the end (the x files analogy was perfect!).

LisaMama Fri, Nov 21, 2008 at 05:43 PM EST

I agree that Hodgins and Angie need to get back together -- they were a perfect compliment to each other. Roxy is obviously just a rebound thing for our Angela.

I think Bones has classified Booth as a certain way and he's not her type romantically -- for the most part, the guys she has dated have been pretty boys, with not a lot of smarts, who have completely flirted with her from the beginning. Booth may be hot, but she respects his mind and his abilities, so he can't be one of her boy toys. I would love to see them together, but I just don't think she will ever see him that way.

Dana Fri, Nov 21, 2008 at 12:09 PM EST

To disapointed
It is a TV show get over it, you are going to stop watching a great show because two of the characters are lesbians? Are you going to stop leaving your house too then because oh my there may be lesbians outside somewhere?

Dana Fri, Nov 21, 2008 at 12:00 PM EST

Hate the Angela-Roxy story line and hate that Agela asked Roxy to move-in so fast not at all like her. Wish she and Hodgens were still together. Loved the episode and I for one did not mind the humore towards the murderous kid at the end. Loved Boothe asking her to shake her hair out. Bones by far is the show whose characters I have the most invested in. Great cast all around with the exception of Roxy. Love that we have Sweets all the time now :) do miss Zac a bit though loved his interaction with Hodgins

kh Fri, Nov 21, 2008 at 11:21 AM EST

Easily one of my favorite episodes of Bones. I giggled throughout the whole thing. Kind of lukewarm on Angela and Roxy. I don't think Roxy adds anything to the show. She doesn't have any quirks or personality.

Monica242 Fri, Nov 21, 2008 at 10:49 AM EST

This needs to graduate to TV Watch!!

Eloise Fri, Nov 21, 2008 at 10:24 AM EST

any one notice that stairs to 1st class are only on 747's but the outside shot of the plane had no "bubble?" Definitely not a 747

KMG Fri, Nov 21, 2008 at 09:51 AM EST

The concept for this ep sounded so cheesy I thought it would stink... but it was actually a lot of fun. Loved the "murder groupie" old lady in the back, LOVED the librarian gag, loved the DA lady... HATE the Angela/Roxy thing. I have no prob w/ a lesbian story line, and the actress playing Roxy is great on In Plain Sight, but this just ain't working. The lab used to be a lot more fun - Hodges/Angela trysts, Hodges/Zack scenes, Cam roling her eyes... now we get Murphy-Brown-esq "intern of the week" and.. SWEETS? Can he please be the next victim on Bones' table?? Please?? If they have to make him a recurring character, I can take it, but I always hate every scene he's in. The actor is fine, but the character doesn't work at all for me. Get Ang & Hodges back together and leave them there!

Owen Fri, Nov 21, 2008 at 09:26 AM EST

Raise your hand if Cam has snuck up and become your favorite character.

Kristen Fri, Nov 21, 2008 at 12:07 AM EST

i LOVED last night's ep. the booth/bones was amazing. especially the sexy librarian and the end scene.
and i agree with everyone--get hodgins and angela back together pronto! those two are meant to be!

Jes Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 10:53 PM EST

Oh, and I love how Booth's feelings were hurt by Brennan's comment about getting back to the work that she loves. So sweet!

Jes Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 10:51 PM EST

Loved this ep! I completely swooned at Booth having the hots for Brennan's sexy librarian. I was yelling at the tv for her to go for it!

deb Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 06:50 PM EST

God I love their chemistry. My 6 year old is saying "Mommy, what's so funny?" and I can't answer. It just is.

Poetic_line Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 06:37 PM EST

If Booth asked me to take off my glasses, I'd probably take off a few other things as well. I'd have burned up with that look and his close proximity.

Wonderfully funny episode. And Brennan's line about how they hardly ever touched made me think she was on another planet. They are always touching.

And why would they need some champagne for later? I'd like to see what happens once the flight takes off.

Al Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 06:18 PM EST

PLEASE Angela and Hodgins back together! The Roxy/Angela thing just doesn't seem real.

mrs. booth Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 06:17 PM EST

if i had gotten that librarian line from booth, ooowwweee ;)

ccross Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 05:52 PM EST

Just caught the episode, and wow-ee! If Booth had given me that librarian line I'd have whipped the glasses off, grabbed him by the tie and laid one on him. Also, I've said it before and I'll say it again--Angie and Hodgens absolutely need to get back together.

Danie Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 05:45 PM EST

'scuse me meant "reading" not "ready".

Danie Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 05:44 PM EST

Those glasses were classic. Gotta go find some, especially if they come attached to Booth. Does anybody know what book the mystery lady was ready? Was wondering if it was Kathy Reichs but I never got a chance to look closely.

to: disappointed Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 05:41 PM EST

"a loving son...a very foolish teenager"

He KILLED someone! That's not loving or foolish, that's murderous! they were toasting becuase under impossible conditions they figured out who did it and arrested the person responsible. But "foolish?" that's why you didn't like it? Becuase the killer ws just a "foolish" kid?

Um, maybe you shouldn't be watching ANY of the crime shows...

Jessica S. Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 05:27 PM EST

I just played (and re-played) that clip about 30 times...Could David Boreanaz be any sexier?!

Oh, and yay for Bones! Still my favorite show on tv-at least until Lost returns:)

emilykay Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 05:12 PM EST

SO glad the bones recaps are back! it was a great episode last night

TO DISAPPOINTED Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 05:08 PM EST

For goodness sakes, it wasn't THAT bad!!! I thought the writing was very good and a surprising twist on who the killer was. However, I do agree about the Lesbian storyline and I have nothing against Lesbians. For some reason, I really disliked when the scenes were back in the lab. Half the fun of the show in the past was watching Hodgins and ANgela flirting and finally falling in love. For someone allegedly as gifted both creatively and intellectually, Angela has become a joke. And that whole storyline is boring.
PS I secretly adore Sweets!!!

Mandy Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 05:04 PM EST

The scene at the very end when Booth and Bones were sitting on the plane getting ready to leave - the way he was looking at her made MY heart skip a beat!! What is wrong with BOnes???? Has she no libido? Or is she just too above it all to really look at Booth and want to jump his "bones"??

disapointed Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 04:54 PM EST

GOODBYE BONES!

Another FORMER good show which won't be included in our viewing pleasure!

Lesbians, NOT.

After watching the airplane episode, we assume the writers must be burned up. A total turn off! And the capper of Booth/Bones toasting with champange after arresting a loving son whom was a very foolish/wrong teenager.

Really?

WE'RE GONE, DAMN IT, - GOOD BYE, Good luck.

BostonbakedKentuckygirl Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 04:28 PM EST

It was a good episode but I really don't buy the Angela/Roxy storyline. It just seems false and forced. Also, how obnoxious is Angela for being disappointed that her friend didn't want to talk about her stupid relationship problems while she was on an airplane doing an autopsy with a knitting needle. They are making the Angela character into an annoying freak. The old lady was funny, though.

BJohnson Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 04:26 PM EST

First let me say if Booth came up to me and asked me to play naughty librarian..you don't ask why, you do it! That was the dialogue of the night. Then the part when the applause started and Bones thought it was for her and Booth solving the crime. Poor kid, no wonder he wanted to drink so bad.
I agree with the fact Angela is just trying to push past the fact she still loves Hodges, their breakup was stupid. She doesn't like to take bad times with the good, so she bolts. Love that Roxy held back on her moving in idea. I miss Zach. Can't wait for next week with Dad!

Val Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 03:51 PM EST

Just love David Boreanaz, funny and hot, what an actor!

bostonbean Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 03:15 PM EST

I haven't seen the ep yet so I don't know if you Cris was referring to something in it or just generally about Brennan being kinda clueless. I've seen this before with homeschooled kids. They're intelligent (booksmart) but not clued in on other areas like social interaction or streetsmarts. I think thats what Brennan's issue is. Also its like people who don't watch TV (those poor souls!) and have no idea when someone is talking about something pop culture related. And nowadays so many things we do and say are tied in with pop culture.

Veronica Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 02:49 PM EST

i want the old lady on the plane to make another appearance:) LMAO!

kthom Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 02:33 PM EST

The whole storyline with Angela and Roxie is stupid. This is a quality show, with great actors and fantastic scripts. The writers should stick to what has been working and get rid of that stupid storyline. I never really got why Angela and Hodgins broke up and she was so in love with him, now she's already in bed with a woman!! Just dumb.

Cris, Ohio Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 02:30 PM EST

BONES was great last night, as usual, but I have to agree with most of my fellow commentators - drop the Angela/Roxy thing and get her back with Hodgens. It doesn't feel right and she & Hodgens were SO good. The beauty and the geek thing was so right on. The Bones/Booth thing is getting pretty hot, although I'm not sure our Brennan has a real clue. How can a person be so intelligent and at the same time so clueless?? She and Booth are so great together, I'd like to see them mix it up a little and see what it does for their working relationship.

Mo Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 01:46 PM EST

Oh, yeah, and a great big "Get Angela and Hodgins back together" from me too!

Mo Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 01:45 PM EST

I haven't seen the episode yet, it's still in my DVR (but I am going to do within a week, I swear, so it counts in the Nielsens or whatever it's called with DVRs!) I just wanted to say thank you for posting the link to the minirecap on the TVWatch page, it makes it so much easier to find. Although I was a bit disappointed because I thought it would be a full-size recap... Oh well.

Kristi in Oregon Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 01:19 PM EST

That was one of the best episodes ever!!! I loved every bit of it. I would like to see Angela back with Hodgins..they sort of smolder, even if just talking about work related stuff.

ccross Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 01:15 PM EST

First of all, Angie and Hodgins need to get back together. Secondly, if we learned nothing else from X-Files, it was that to keep the chemistry going between a starring couple can never get together until the end; otherwise you lose the magic.

Shelly Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 01:10 PM EST

If a hot guy like Booth asked me to take off my glasses and let down my hair, I'd do it in a flash and throw myself at him! :D

Tammy Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 01:06 PM EST

David Boreanaz was so sexy flirting, I am suprised her glasses didn't steam up! That man is just so damn sexy!

Sara Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 12:46 PM EST

Haha... Booth's belt buckle! It says "C0cky"!

Ted Smith Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 12:40 PM EST

Please let Roxy go. Agreeing to what one commenter already said, she is way too distracting to the plot-line. The show's producers needs to "bring the genius back" and less of this social tangent. Thank you.

jenjen Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 12:35 PM EST

Get Hodgins and Angela back together already!! They have such great chemistry, as demonstrated by their banter last night.

I loved the librarian thing!

MilkMama Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 12:28 PM EST

The episode was fantastic!!!! The librarian comment, the meerkat comment, the last comment, "Why do people always think we're going to make out?" (Because they all have EYES.)
It was a great episode!!!

Chris Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 11:46 AM EST

I love the episode last night. I loved how they used the passengers to help solve the crime. I wish they just put Angela and Hoggins back together already

marci johnson Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 11:38 AM EST

I wish they'd drop the bi-sexual plotline. It's distracting. Bring the little genius back.

MARCI JOHNSON Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 11:37 AM EST

How did that knitting needle get on the plane? Half the stuff in my bag is considered a weapon while she carries on this thing? too funny.

Rachel K Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 11:28 AM EST

While I'm a big fan of Bones in general last night's episode felt forced to me. First, why was Booth going with Brennan on her dig? He never has before so it felt like the writer's just didn't want to shake up the magic of Bones and Booth together. Be creative writers! Second, how tactless was it to make fun of the kid who cooked a woman who was still alive. I mean that's disturbing on so many levels. I get that the kid has a sick mom and he might have been drunk but still, he's a punchline?!? Poor form! Third, Angela and Roxy have zero chemistry. And the idea that Angela(a serious commitment-phobe), two seconds after breaking up with Hodgens would propose that Roxy move into her place becasue she's "ready" is preposterous to her character. I get that the writers are trying to show she's growing emotionally but in like, four episodes? Again, a tad forced. Sorry, if I seem whiny I just expect better!

Jen Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 11:17 AM EST

Slowly, slowly this show is putting Bones and Booth together! How many times did Bones ask why people thought they were in a sexual relationship? And the librarian thing? And Booth's face with his toast "to us" and the sip of champagne!? And next week's promo with her dad and Booth! It's gonna happen! Yippie.

Krystal Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 10:58 AM EST

I loved last night's episode! Just the perfect mix of humour and serious and no melodrama. I'm not too sure about Roxy and Angela though, I don't really feel any chemistry at all with those two, while you could see it all the time with Hodgins. I just wonder how they're going to play it out, if they stay together or if they break up. And I want to see Zack back in another episode! I love him!

Lady K Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 10:49 AM EST

Last night's episode was fantastic! Especially when Cam told Sweets he was only called back because he was on speed dial. The chemistry between Booth and Bones was really crackling! Hopefully, this episode will be the benchmark for the rest of the season!

kb Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 10:49 AM EST

the librarian comment was classic. I laughed until it hurt.
I'm ready for the Angela/Roxy thing to be over for 2 reasons: 1 - too many shows have new gay/bisexual couples this season so the storyline is no longer interesting. 2 - Angela and Hodgins belong together. end of story.

kjh Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 10:36 AM EST

great episode. one of the better ones recently!

Sarah Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 10:35 AM EST

I do love this show, and this episode was a classic. I will say, though, that I am not feeling the Angela/Roxy thing. Call me a purist but they need to get Zack back and give Angela and Hodgins a happily ever after.

Josie Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 10:33 AM EST

I agree, it was a great episode. The best part was after Booth tells Brennan to "...take off your glasses, shake out your hair..." he gets a call and walks out and then she does it! Trying to figure out why! So cute.

Jorge Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 10:31 AM EST

"Bones" last night was great. Have been enjoying it all season, but that was a standout. With Roxy, I think Angela is using her to pretend like she's over the breakup with Hodgins, though maybe Angela doesn't mean to. The fallout will be huge, I bet. I loved the mystery lady.

bostonbean Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 10:30 AM EST

Mm glad to see that my Bones are back on track this season after a rocky start. I wish this show would get a recap all its own. They have the best lines and best character moments on TV.

Lene Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 10:15 AM EST

Every time I think Bones can't get any better, it does. Last night's show was a gem - one I wish I'd recorded so I could watch it one more time (OK, maybe two or three).

Angela and Roxy's sort of meh for me right now. Am willing to see where it goes, though.
