Anthony Edwards' 'ER' return: What did you think?

Nov 14, 2008, 09:14 AM | by Whitney Pastorek

Categories: About Last Night, Television

Eredwards_l Last night, Anthony Edwards became the first in what is expected to be a long line of former ER cast members who return to the mothership to pay homage during the show's last season, courtesy of an episode that finally explained the way Angela Bassett's Dr. Cate Banfield became the ice-cold, short-haired control freak she is today: Her son died at County General while under the treatment of Edwards' Dr. Greene, and as she struggled to save a girl in the present day, she flashed back to that horrible event and the doctor who couldn't save her boy.

Well, we knew the dead guy was only reappearing in flashback. And courtesy of NBC's kind publicity department, we've known for a while now those flashes would happen to Banfield. But did it all have to be so hackneyed? The too-obvious references to Mark's brain tumor (all that sweating! all that grimacing!), the cliche indicators of Banfield's frigid transformation (she used to wear cute cardigans!), and the closing moments that were supposed to be moving but just made me cringe all fell significantly below the bar this show has set for itself over the years. And while it was great to see Edwards—plus bonus cameos from Laura Innes, Paul McCrane, Haleh's old hair, and that cute EMT girl—I wish they'd found a way to work Dr. Greene into the story via a character I care more about. It's not just that Bassett hasn't been around enough for me to grow emotionally attached; the battleaxe acting choices she's made so far aren't helping. Though with Maura Tierney gone, it's hard to say who might have been a better choice-- how about giving Yvette Freeman her own hour? The woman has more than earned it.

But just because I've never missed an episode of this show in 14 years doesn't mean I've gotta be right. What did you think, PopWatchers? Any of you loyalists like last night's hour better than me? Did any old fans come back just to see Edwards? And will you tune in for Clooney et al, if they appear?

I love it. Dr. Greene and Carter was the best thing to ever happen to ER. I haven't watched ER for years but hearing Dr. Greene was going to appear I watched and loved it.

Stacy Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 11:04 AM EST

I have to say, I stopped watching ER when Edwards' character died. I felt the show really lacked something without Dr. Greene, not to mention I had been a fan of his for so long it almost felt like I lost a family member. I heard he was going to be back in a flashback episode and intended to watch. However, as last Thursday night wore on, I decided that it just wouldn't be the same and would likely just be a sad reminder that ER 'jumped the shark' many years ago. It probably should have ended even before Dr. Greene's death, but definitely no more than one season after. I don't even recognize any of the characters on the show anymore and really don't like many of the actors now on the show. They would have been better off to do a spinoff of some type because the show that is still called ER is not even close to the same show that it was the greats like Edwards, Clooney, Marguilles, Wyle and LaSalle were the focus. I am glad to hear that Edwards return touched so many of you!

Alyk Mon, Nov 17, 2008 at 08:21 PM EST

I have never missed an episode of ER. it is the only show that I have always stayed faithful to. I loved ,loved, loved the Dr Greene episode. he was always my all time favorite doc.

kathy Sun, Nov 16, 2008 at 10:20 PM EST

Dang, I feel duped! I fell for it, with Anthony Edwards looking the same, as compared to Eriq LaSalle (who has aged). I actually thought they spliced in an old episode. The writing is truly succint-- a wonderful rememrance of a great hero of the show!

Lucinda Sun, Nov 16, 2008 at 07:44 PM EST

Yeah, I am a fan of all things Whitney, but for once I have to say I disagree. The reason I liked this episode is that it hearkened back to an old storyline of Dr. Greene's. Remember that one episode when the pregnant couple came in and Mark made a mistake, and the mother (and baby? it's been a while) ended up dying? Then about a year later, there was a Mother's Day ep and a mother came in with the same problem, but this time Mark was redeemed by catching it and saving them both? That was a great story, and this echoed it to me. Thanks to what she learned from Mark, Dr. Banfield was able to get a little redemption - if not total peace - by helping this child. It's like his legacy shone on, even from the grave. That's why I liked it.

Regardless, thanks for all of your wonderful work, Whitney. My friends and I love reading you!

Jim Sun, Nov 16, 2008 at 04:26 PM EST

I am only a casual fan. I only watch when the TV Guide descriptions seem interesting. I did watch this episode and thought it was merely average. I wish Dr. Greene had shown more emotion. I will probably watch other episodes when other former cast members appear, particularly if Carter or Susan reappear.

tyler Sun, Nov 16, 2008 at 06:32 AM EST

well i think u should get a different job because no one agrees with u. >:

db Sun, Nov 16, 2008 at 12:29 AM EST

I only watch ER episodes that George Clooney appears in. Otherwise, it is not worth it.

Kate Sat, Nov 15, 2008 at 08:25 PM EST

You've got a good point in that she wished they had brought him back via someone more likable. Via Haleh, or maybe Chuny too. A nurses' hour, what a concept on this show! Frank was in the pilot episode too.

I have mixed feelings about all the old cast back. I watched but didn't care that much for the first cast of Mark, Carol, Susan, Carter and Doug. I preferred the second cast (Kerry, Abby, Luka, Pratt) so it feels like mourners viewing the coffin to see everyone from the old days back.

Gretchen Weiners Sat, Nov 15, 2008 at 08:02 PM EST

I was in tears for most of the episode, so I think I disagree with you, Whittles! I thought it was great!

B Sat, Nov 15, 2008 at 06:53 PM EST

I use to watch the show in Edwards day. that was the sole reason I tuned in. And I loved it. It was nice to see him grace the tiny screen again.

Raven_Moon Sat, Nov 15, 2008 at 06:00 PM EST

I thoughtit was a pretty good episode. Not everything I hoped for, but not bad. I'm excited about George Clooney returning. I hope Julianna Margulies appears with him. I'm also looking forward to seeing Noah Wyle again.

Leslie Sat, Nov 15, 2008 at 01:38 PM EST

I thought last night's episode was exactly what I wanted. A glimpse into Angela Bassett's character and a bonus glimpse into Dr. Greene's past that we never saw while he was still in the ER. The second he was on the screen, my exact words were, "Aww-www-www," as if I'd seen a long lost friend. My husband didn't quite get me, but I don't care. ER is my favorite television show of all time and I'm working through my grief as it comes to a close. He can get over it. Kudos, NBC and thank you to Anthony Edwards from a loyal fan.

Sat, Nov 15, 2008 at 12:11 PM EST

It was classic ER! I still watch this show every Thursday night. I'll definitely miss it when it's gone.

GloriainFlorida Sat, Nov 15, 2008 at 10:19 AM EST

I stopped watching many years ago, but not for any other medical shows, as they all could not compare to ER. I did return just because Dr. Greene was making a visit, and I'm so glad I did. I did not know anything about Dr. Banfield, but it was easy to see how her grief had affected her during her journey to present day, and I think she is finally now on the road to recovery. As a parent I mourned for her loss, and my 22-year-old college student still doesn't know why I held her and cried so hard when she brought me her laundry home late Thursday. I really enjoyed seeing all the old gang, and look forward to more revelations as the final season unfolds. I will be watching again.

Mary Sat, Nov 15, 2008 at 08:59 AM EST

I do not know what you are talking about. This episode was brilliant. Very classic ER. I felt like I was back in my dorm lounge in college watching the show with a bunch of friends. Great memories. This was also a brilliant way to blend in Angela Bassett's character with the rest of the cast. She has a purpose now. Loved all the subtle nuances from the past. ER, you are back on top.

Sherry Sat, Nov 15, 2008 at 07:45 AM EST

I hope all the originals come back - including Julianna Margulies and George Clooney. The show back then was REALLY 'must see TV'!!

debbiew Sat, Nov 15, 2008 at 03:02 AM EST

This is how and why I fell in love with ER so many years ago! NO silly soap-opera melodramas of which nurse/doctor is sleeping with which doctor this week. Just a solid script that was dramatic without going over the top. This could really have wrenched tears from the hardest guy. It was poignant in not only seeing Dr. Greene (yay!!!) but also seeing him near the end of his medical career. And life.

So, thanks, ER writers. You'll never outdo this episode. See how great things happen when you let the grown-ups come back to the ER?

I would have watched it any, but Dr. Greene made it more worthwhile. I love ER and he is my favorite

Tony Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 10:16 PM EST

I enjoyed the episode. However, it would have been nice to of had more time with Dr. Greene. It seemed to be rushed. I was very happy to see Dr. Weaver and Dr. Romano return. Seeing Jerry was also an added surprise. I am also one that has seen every episode and watch every Thursday night that a new episode appeared. I would have liked to see Lydia come back, as she was one of the first nurses that we saw when the show premiered. I look forward to the rest of the season and hope for more appearances by some of our past favorites.

Amy Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 10:15 PM EST

I spent years and years of Thursday nights watching ER but abandoned it when the originals were all gone. Maybe I should have hung in there, if last night was any indication. Edwards was outstanding and brought back a flood of memories that reminded me of why this show touched me so much. I'm crossing my fingers for Clooney and Margulies.

Casey Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 08:47 PM EST

I tuned in to see Edwards for sure. ER is still good tv.

Liz Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 08:46 PM EST

Stopped watching when Anthony Edwards left - first time tuning in since then.

Great episode, miss the Mark Greene character. Show's just not the same without him.

Canada Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 08:04 PM EST

I'm one of those who stopped watching ER regularly after Dr. Greene died and totally stopped after Carter left. A few years ago I rediscoverd the show and I've really enjoyed it. All the characters in the ER were new but it didn't take long to get to know and like them. I'm sorry this is the show's last season and I thought last night's episode was excellent. What's up with Popwatch? Seems ya might have missed the boat...

Audra Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 07:54 PM EST

what about carol?!! Nobody loved her as much as i did? She left too too soon.
Like many others i havent watched in since it was on tnt right before judging amy when dr. greene was on. I jumped for joy when i saw him open those doors.
Everyone needs to come back screw all these new people bring back the first characters and have an episode just with them!!

kim in kentucky Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 07:24 PM EST

GREAT episode!! One of the best in a LONG time! Teared up also. It was CLASSIC ER -- like the good ol' days!!!

Jen Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 07:03 PM EST

I really enjoyed last night's show. I thought the segways in between the scenes with Banfield's son & the child she was working on were done very well. I can't wait to see who else comes back for a final hurrah!

Laura Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 06:43 PM EST

Glad to see Anthony back in the ER, thrilled that his salary went to a worthwhile charity, and reminded why I was so happy to see a helicopter crush Romano!

adrian Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 06:28 PM EST

outstanding seeing Eriq la Salle giving props to Michael Crichton. The setup for Dr Greene was perfect. Seeing the leadership, demeanor from him brought back so many memories. Kerry was good, seeing Jerry, Im surprised Chunny or Malek wasn't in this one at least Haleh was there. Great episode. Dr Mark Greene thanks for the memories.

entertainmenttodayandbeyond.com Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 06:26 PM EST

I really liked the episode. I have also seen every episode of ER and Im still a fan of the show. While not great, its still good. This seasons "The Book of Abby" episode was great! While George Clooney, Noah Wyle and Eric Lasalle all did terrific work on the show, the program belongs to Anthony Edwards, and last night proved that! He is great as Dr. Greene. His last episode in the ER titled "Orion in the Sky" is one of TV's best moments!

Theresa Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 06:24 PM EST

It was the best episode in a long time. Great to see Anthony Edwards again but WOW Angela Bassett, she is the one the best actor/actress's out there. I cried and I am not a crier. I wish they hadn't waited until the last year to add her.

AnnBee Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 05:31 PM EST

Disagree with the recap. Great episode. Made sense and furthered the development of Dr. Cate. Writers doing a great job bringing back old characters!

JJ Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 05:28 PM EST

Just wanted to add that as another loyal "ER" fan we should recognize Jerry (Abraham Benrubi) returning, as well as Eriq La Salle giving an introduction at the beginning of the episode.

On another note, it seems like people have generally given up on this show. But watching "ER" after another Thursday-night medical drama on ABC makes you realize that "ER" is in a whole other league. Besides its stories feeling realer, it's characters more flawed and less airbrushed, and its stance on social issues, "ER" is far and away the best medical show on TV. Suffice it to say it deserves a larger audience for its last season.

Myke25 Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 05:12 PM EST

And it was nice that they gave him top billing.

DanOregon Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 04:28 PM EST

I meant bus crash not bush in the previous post. I really wish the writers structured the final season about an old lawsuit that required many of the old regulars to return to the hospital for a deposition and work in flashbacks. Would have been great.

DanOregon Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 04:20 PM EST

I quit watching ER after the originals left and NBC hyped the show to death "the MOST amazing ER EVER!!!!" and ended up showing a bush on a 200-foot cliff...outside of Chicago?
That said, great to see Greene, Jerry et.al. but it still felt like visiting your childhood home and seeing another family living there.

em Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 04:19 PM EST

i loved the episode! it was like old times! hopefully this will bring the greatness back to the show that it once had...

YP Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 04:13 PM EST

I loved the episode last night. It was great to see Dr. Green along a few other familiar faces popping up. I would love for all the old doc's to come back for some type of reunion. George Clooney, Eric De Lasalle, Noah Wyle to name a few. The nurses characters are unforgetable too. I think we need to see Carols twins. I'm not sure what story line can bring everyone back but it sure would be worth it. Too bad they all can't just come back as a thank you to the fans and not come looking for a payment from nbc.

Lolita Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 04:09 PM EST

Last nights episode was EXCELLENT! I haven't watched any episodes this season, but I tuned in to see Anthony Edwards, one of my favorite originals.
I cried from beginning to end!

I really hope George Clooney does an episode!! That would be fantastic!

Why no mention of Eriq LaSalle before the episode started, talking about Michael Crichton? That was really touching.

Marisol Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 03:55 PM EST

Please note Anthony Edwards did not get paid to appear on ER, instead he opted for a donation to a children's hospital he is trying to help get built in Africa. That was enough for me to tune in. It was a great episode. He inspired me to donate to his cause shoe4africa.org check it out for yourself.

Heather Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 03:53 PM EST

I have to disagree, I really enjoyed this episode and seeing Dr. Greene again. I think working in his cancer was the best way to make his appearance somewhat dramatic, and it gave him something to do other than just play doctor. It made me tear up just seeing him again, the episode when he died was probably the saddest episode of TV I have ever seen.

Jessica Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 03:35 PM EST

I have seen every episode of ER up until the horribly sad one where Greene dies. After that, everyone left and it was lost. I did watch this episode though. Because at the heart of this show originally, there was Mark Greene. Dr. Carter was supposed to be the focus, but Greene captured the spirit of it for me. I don't know Banfield very well, but this was a very touching episode. I didn't think the brain cancer was too obvious, and the addition of other characters like Dr. Weaver and Dr. Romano were so nice to see. I thought it was fantastic. Not enough to make me start to watch again, but enough to make me remember why I used to watch it in the first place.

joan Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 03:25 PM EST

The episode had to show Dr. Greene's cancer, because Bannfield's son ultimately died from acute leukemia. Greene was sick, but it didn't stop him from taking care of a patient, and he didn't give any excuses. You know he was thinking about his own possible death when he was trying to keep the little boy alive. It might have been cheesy to show him with cancer, but it explains a lot of why his character did what he did.

joan Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 03:19 PM EST

I haven't watched ER for a while, since Carter left, but watched last night, and loved it. I was trying to figure out when the episode took place, and I think, based on his call to Elizabeth asking to see her, it was toward the end of his cancer battle, when Rachel was causing problems, (during Edwards last year on ER).
But I loved seeing Dr. Greene again, and the show hasn't been the same since he left.

Susola Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 03:14 PM EST

Whitney, you've got to be kidding. Hackneyed? No way.

Lisa Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 03:09 PM EST

I thought the whole episode was fantastic. Angela Basset is a truly amazing actress. It was nice to see those characters again, particularly Dr. Green. If you think back to when the flashback would have taken place, the mannerisms of Dr. Green were exactly what was going on then. I really liked the whole thing and we even got to see Jerry again!

JM Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 03:06 PM EST

I haven't watched ER since Dr. Carter left but I watched last night. Seeing Dr. Greene made me cry. It was like seeing a lost loved one in an old home movie or something.

Kelli Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 02:53 PM EST

Cried like a baby. Great, Great, Great. Please keep this show going. It's still great. Weaving the two storylines together past and present was seamless. Kudos to Angela Bassett and Anthony Edwards. Also loved the Banfield/Morris scene at the end. Wow.

Missy Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 02:51 PM EST

I haven't been able to watch the full episode yet (thank heavens for the DVR), but just the little bit I saw of Dr. Greene had me tearing up. He was the reason I started watching the show in the first season (I've loved Anthony Edwards since the days of Goose and Gilbert), and the reason I quit watching when I figured out they were going to kill him off. I loved just seeing the character again. But it also made me a little sad just recognizing that here is a show that I used to LOVE years ago, that's still on, and yet I can't bring myself to watch it every week. I haven't watched even half of an episode in years. That said, you can bet I'll be setting the DVR again if Clooney comes back!

mak Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 02:28 PM EST

I loved it! I balled my eyes out.
It was great to see Dr. Greene back!!

JoeBob Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 02:10 PM EST

Clooney's not coming back. He's a major moviestaaahh now, and it would be beneath him.

Cameron Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 01:57 PM EST

Proof positive that even an aged show in full-on swan song mode is still better than 90% of what's on TV right now - though I do share some peoples' opinion that Ms. Bassett is piling it on a bit thick. She's acting like she's on borrowed time, which I guess she is, this being the final season and all. But still, there's a difference between embodying damaged heartbreak and just being plain ol' abrasive and annoying. We're losing so many great TV shows this season: The Shield, Battlestar, ER.....I'm officially depressed now.

Al Fredo Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 01:54 PM EST

I am one of those who came back just for the Dr Greene cameo, having long since stopped watching ER. I must agree with the majority here; it was a fabulous episode and Dr Greene's role was perfectly done. I'll definitely tune in if they bring back the old gang (Carter, Ross)

Dan Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 01:53 PM EST

It would be great if NBC and the producers decided that this show should continue on. Granted, there has been numerous cast changes over the years but the show still touches a soft spot in my heart week after week. I'll miss this show and Thursday nights will never be the same. Please reconsider pulling this show!

Chad Smith Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 01:52 PM EST

Seeing Anthony Edwards on ER again just reinforced something I've personally felt for a long time. And that is that no matter what the kind of a universal love-in critics may have for Grey's Anatomy (and yes I'm a fan) in terms of quality television nothing Grey's ever does will come close to matching the legacy of ER's first half dozen seasons.

Nunnya Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 01:45 PM EST

LOVED IT! I quit watching ER regularly many years ago, but in a lot of ways it is a better show now.

ER FAN FOR 15 YEARS Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 01:44 PM EST

Love ER with all of the new characters, but last night with Dr. Weaver, Dr. Greene and all, was excellent. So nice to see Paul McCrane.

The storyline was great!

Ali Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 01:38 PM EST

Amazing episode!! I stopped watching ER when the last original character left. I don't know if I'll watch any of the remaining episodes but if I don't . . . this episode was a fitting conclusion to the series that I grew up watching.

Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 01:32 PM EST

What a terrible review! I thought the episode was terrific. Bringing Mark Greene back the way they did was an excellent idea. It was a true ER episode... I cried like a baby!

Melissa Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 01:27 PM EST

I have to disagree with Whitney, and agree with the majority of the posters- this was one of the best episodes in a long time.

I thought it was a great way to honor one of the most beloved characters in the show's history by showing what a dedicated, compassionate doctor he was. At the same time, it brought us much closer to a new character by seeing what made her the woman and doctor she is.

As someone who has watched ER since the beginning (when I was 12 years old!), and only missed a few episodes, I have to say that one of the things I love about ER is it's ability to make you care about new characters. Sure, the old favorites have gone, but I have grown to love Neela, Morris and others.

It's comforting to know that when the show's come to an end, that the ER and its new blood will live on somewhere in the viewers' collective imaginations.

Fatima Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 01:23 PM EST

Pete- Exactly. Not only age but relevance. If the story happened in 1995, it would have been 13 years since Banfield lost her son. Not that she couldn't be in mourning like she is still, but it makes more sense to make it as recent as possible. I admit ER hasn't been great in a while (I quit watching a few years ago) but the big three "event" episodes this year (the first one, Abby's last one, and this one) have all been spectacular.

Pete Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 01:20 PM EST

Fatima--I don't understand that part of Whitney Pastorek's critism at all. Greene's cancer was big part of that character for two years. And it made sense to set the episode during that time, the ending year of Greene, because it's been so long, and as Anna said, to hide the actor's aging in illness. I thought it was realistic that ER allowed some of the lives of the characters back then to progress on that day, even a little.

danielle Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 01:19 PM EST

first episode i had seen in YEARS! loved seeing romano as well.

Tonisha Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 01:16 PM EST

Thought this was an excellent episode. It was so good see Dr. Greene again, along with the other former castmates. And I agree, it was like the old ER again. Excellent storyline, pulled at your heartstrings. Now we know why Dr. Banfield's character is the way she is. Loved seeing Courtney on there too! I thought they acted really well together. They make a great team, on and off screen.

joeinmemphis Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 01:14 PM EST

Angela Bassett, Angela Bassett, Angela Bassett...PHENOMENAL! I stopped watching ER years ago but this damn woman has me tuning in every week. This woman can express an emotion without even opening her mouth. That's what you call acting.

Fatima Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 01:13 PM EST

Having calmed down, it is good to read 90 percent of the board agrees it was a good episode. I really am just have a hard time grasping why it is hackneyed to reference Greene's cancer. He had it. It killed him. It isn't okay to mention? Plus, Basset is doing a terrific job humanizing a pretty unlikable character. I wanted to hug her last night but I guess that means I love cheese.

Angie Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 01:08 PM EST

I was a regular ER watcher until Noah Wylie left. I watched off/on since. tuning in for the last season and I can honestly say the show has been fantastic this year.Loved having Dr Greene back in a realistic storyline - emotional resonance because he was dealing w/his cancer at the time and postponed treatment session in dedication to his patient. Deeper understanding of Banfield and she's now on the road to healing. Wonderful acting and story. Buckets of tears shed. Emmy's for all the cast and the show would be well deserved.

Pete Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 01:07 PM EST

Anna--I had the same thought. Also, they had to time the incident toward the end of Greene's time at County so they wouldn't have to change his hair and because how many years can Banfield have been greaving? As it was, the death must have been at least 6 years ago.

Fatima Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 01:05 PM EST

UM WOW I've never disagreed with EW more. Last night was subtle unlike an episode of Grey's recently. Banfield didn't see a "ghost" or anything. And it's bad that there are references to Greene dying of cancer at the time? WTF what is wrong with that? Angela Basset is one of our finest actresses who deserves an Emmy for this episode and I thought it was a moving SUBTLE episode on loss that you probably just can't relate to. Seriously, I never thought I would read a slam for an episode like this especially for a website that worships Idol and Dancing With The Stars.

Pete Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 01:05 PM EST

Everything Whitney Pastorek writes is so negative. Geez. I liked the episode and it was great to see the old guys again. I was wondering how they'd deal with the set changes over the years, and keeping the sets to the trama room, the hall and outside fixed that. And it seems like they did well to make the situation consistent with what happened that year with Dr. Greene. (He had plenty of episodes that showed how sick he was.) Also, the show needed a way to tell Banfield's backstory or we would never invest in her b/c it's the last year of the show. This was a good way--it got our attention.

anna Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 12:59 PM EST

I thought it was a good episode, and it was great to see Dr. Greene again. I thought that the reason for placing the timeline at the time of Dr. Greene's brain tumour was to try to rationalize the fact that he looked older. The sweating and physical stress on his face helped to explain Anthony Edward's natural aging since he left the show.

Having the opportunity to see Dr. Green last night in ER was the only reason I watched. Unfortunately when Green died several years ago, so did my interest in ER. He carried the show. After working in a ER as a resident myself, I was unable to connect with the other characters. For me ER was and will always be "Dr. Green". Great to see him revisit the set. I actually stayed up to watch for the first time in 6 years. To all the writers on the set...Thank you for giving the character one more spot light...as always he filled it well! Jane

To me, last night's episode wasn't so much about Dr. Green. It was about the stunning, incredible actress that is Angela Bassett. If she doesn't win an Emmy next year for this episode, they are fools! I've watched this show every season for 14 years and it's nice to see some old faces.........I totally agree with Whitney that the nurses on this show deserve an episode of their own, especially people like Haleh and Chuney who are the only cast members who have been there from the start!! And I also hope last night's 10 second cameo was not the final appearance by Dr. Weaver.

This was one of the best ER's that I've ever watched. I loved to see Weaver, Jerry, and Romano too. However, I was shocked when Romano told Greene, "It's not my fault that you have cancer!" I found that line very offensive and Greene should have kicked Romano's butt!

I loved it. And I didn't think I was going to. It totally made me miss vintage ER and I was actually moved by seeing Greene (which is very rare for me in a TV show). I think I will go buy a huge box set and watch them all from the beginning. Much better than anything else on TV now. I got away from ER in the last few years, only watching sporadically, but from 1995-2005 or so it was really the best thing on TV.

Loved it. Greene's return was understated; it didn't shout out "tah-dah I'm back!" but fit with the characters and stories already in process. LOVED the line about there not being a word for a mother who's lost a child--best writing in ages!

I started watching ER the first season, when I was a high school freshman, and I watched religiously for 4 or 5 seasons, but the show lost me when the original characters started leaving. Last night, I got sucked into ER right after 30Rock, and even though I didn't know most of the new characters, I was riveted by the story. It felt like an old episode, and like many others on here, I got a little choked up when Dr. Greene appeared at the ambulance door. I thought it was a great way to bring back his character, and a good backstory for Dr. Banfield. I just might keep tuning in this season if they keep having episodes like this one.

I dreaded the return of a beloved character who'd died, but found the episode very touching. Bassett and Vance -- married in real life -- it doesn't get much better. BTW, "hackneyed" is the way "Grey's Anatomy" incessantly brings back the dead "Denny" as a freakin' ghost!

I was so excited to know that Anthony Edwards was going to be on ER again. I know that it wasn't possible to bring his character back on the present show; but it would've been nice. I have been watching ER since the first season. My daughter (who is 12) and I have a few seasons on DVD, too. Anthony's character was my fav. Dr Green was a kind hearted, loving man. I really do miss the original cast. I know - all thing must evolve. But kudos for bringing him back (even if it was a flashback).

probie123 Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 12:32 PM EST

OK - I thought ER was maybe a tiny bit off until I watched my tivod episode of "Grey's Anatomy" which was so bad, they have to bring back a dead guy to try to make us interested. Not to mention stealing Jennifer Love Hewitt's obvious plot line for tonight and Boston Legal's Jerry Asberger character and making her a less entertaing woman. I think ER could have had an episode about dolphins and it would have been better and more worth watching. Think about it, how else could they have worked Greene into an episode - Angela Bassett with her real life husband Courtney Vance were great in their roles, especially him. There is so much bad TV you could write about - give ER a break. I know
Clooney is going to come back and that will be manipulated too but whose going to complain about that one.... It was great to see Goose!

Emma Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 12:29 PM EST

Anthony Edwards is amazing. I understand that they had to devote some time to the present to keep things "real" but I definitely would have liked to see more of him. A lot more. His tragic passing in season 8 actually made me cry and having him back for only that brief time was not enough. I'm just glad they're wrapping up. I don't think there is any other character that I would watch ER for again except maybe Carter (Noah Wyle). I stopped watching when he left.

Kelly Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 12:27 PM EST

As a single mom of a 5-year-old and a long-time viewer of ER, I LOVED this episode. It's one of the best they've had in a LONG time. No, I don't much care for Banfield, but this episode finally made me connect with her. Any show that can make you cry from beginning to end is a real keeper. For the opening scenes with a grandfather looking for a baby in the water, to Banfield's loving family scenes, to Dr. Green's opening of the doors to Morris' talk with Banfield in the end. Good Lord, this was Must-See-TV for sure.

pfitz Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 12:25 PM EST

I used to love Angela Bassett, but I think she is horrible in this role...or maybe it's horribly written. But I just want to flip the channel whenever she's on.

Joe Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 12:12 PM EST

My big complaint: not enough of Anthony Edwards. I kept looking at my watch marking off time until :30 into the episode when he appeared. Then when we got to see him, they kept cutting away from his scenes, making his screen time even smaller.

Rod Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 12:06 PM EST

A great episode last night. Very true to why ER was always so popular. And I loved that they finally gave us insight to Angela Bassett's hard-nosed doc. Kudos to all the cast, past and present, for an amazing show. The best part about the flashbacks was that it didn't feel like a gimmick for ratings. Let's hope the future guest spots are just as successful.

Nicole Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 12:05 PM EST

I too have been a fan of ER since the the beginning and I thought last nights episode was wonderful. It could have played the season that Mark's tumor can back without missing a beat. It was great seeing Weaver and Romano & my fav clerk Jerry. I also teared up when the ambulance doors opened up and there was Dr Greene. But the emotional sucker punch for me was the scene between Banfield & Morris at the end. When she said When you lose your parents your an orphan, When you lose your husband your a widow but when your lose your baby, there is no word for that. That is why ER was and is such a great drama. When one bit of dialog can envoke such a viceral reaction.

welshgirl Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 11:58 AM EST

I heart Dr. Greene. I cried like a baby when he died. he's my favorite character on this whole series and it was lovely to see him back. He's been gone so long though, that i don't think they could have done anything differently - how would he have impacted any of the other cast members who weren't even there when he was there? Nice to see Romano and Jerry, too! I'm going to be bummed when ER stops.

PJ Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 11:47 AM EST

I thought it was pretty good. I think EW focuses more on what they can snark about rather than what the episode is actually about.

JULIE Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 11:46 AM EST

I totally disagree with your review! The episode was very touching and heartbreaking. It reminded me of how good ER used to be.

Hope Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 11:45 AM EST

When is someone going to give Anthony Edwards his own TV show?! This guy is talented and it's a crime he's not on a show. I thought the episode was great except for the fact that she waited so long to take him to the hospital. I don't care if you have medical knowledge or not - being a Mom trumps everything. Little bit unbelievable there. Otherwise, a very touching episode that I enjoyed immensely. The only thing that can make ER go out with a bang is for Doug Ross to come back for the finale. George, make the fans happy and do it!

Jean Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 11:33 AM EST

I have not watched ER since Carter left but I watched last night. I actually teared up when Anthony Edwards opened the ambulance door and said "Welcome to County General, I'm Dr. Greene." It was like seeing and old friend.

BrandonK Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 11:33 AM EST

Wow, you've never missed an episode?! That's dedication. I definitely haven't managed that kind of long-term dedication, although I've probably seen all of The Simpsons episodes by now.

DARLA Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 11:30 AM EST

i loved this episode!!! i thought it was emotionally charged and it was amazing to see dr. greene again. one of my favorites.

Jana Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 11:28 AM EST

This episode was just right. As someone who's been watching since the beginning, I feel connected to these characters, and was touched to see Dr. Green just before his tumor took that fateful turn. And Dr. Banfield's stuggle to save that child while remembering the loss of her own was simply heartbreaking. This season reminds me of ERs past...

Ames Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 11:26 AM EST

I think a show that has survived for 14 years is entitled to a little "hackneyed" sentimentality. And kudos to Anthony Edwards for not being such a diva beyotch and actually coming back to the show. When he appeared at the back of that ambulance and said "I'm Dr. Greene," I choked up, I ain't gonna lie - he always was my favorite character. And it's ABOUT DAMN TIME they showed some love to Mr. Michael Crichton. They should dedicate an entire episode to his memory, maybe their annual Very Special Thanksgiving episode - a fitting thankful tribute to the man we all owe a big one for starting it all. I have watched this show since it premiered in 1994, haven't missed a single episode, and will miss it greatly when it's gone. I just hope Angela Bassett's out of control scenery chewing doesn't ruin the last season of this show. ER is one of the greats!

JMJ Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 11:25 AM EST

I have been watching ER since the beginning and I will continue to watch until it's done. I thought the flashback to Dr. Green was very well done and I liked that it brought some humanity to Banfield as she was severely lacking that quality, and now we know why. I would have liked to see a little more Romano, but at least they kept him true to form in the brief time he had on-screen. The fact that so many viewers hate him shows just how well-written a character he was. And it's always great to see Jerry. He's the best.

sirkevin Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 11:18 AM EST

Wait, did you watch the same show I watched? Because this was the best episode the series has offered in years. It was expertly directed and cleverly written. Bassett's performance was positively heartbreaking and Edwards hit every warm, nostalgic note that we all hoped for. I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the eppy, and even more surprised you didn't like it!
