Vote for Creepiest Halloween Costume ('The View' edition)

Oct 31, 2008, 02:04 PM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: Fa-fa-fa-fa-fashion, Happy Holidays, Morning Madness, The Bad Man Scares Me!, The View

Theview_l My pal Kristen Baldwin sent me a frantic IM this morning: "Turn on The View. NOW!" Really, her message should have come with a warning -- "What you are about to see may result in trembling, emotional scarring, and possible collapse." But since I got blindsided by the sight of the show's hosting panel in frightening Halloween drag, why should you be spared, PopWatchers? After the jump, check out closeup screengrabs of Barbara Walters as George Washington, Elisabeth Hasselbeck as Ronald Reagan, Sherri Shepherd as a penny, er, I mean Abraham Lincoln, Whoopi Goldberg as FDR, and Joy Behar as Teddy Roosevelt. And do vote in our exclusive PopWatch poll to tell us which costume freaks you out the most.

Sherri as the penny was actually clever and funny. Hasslebeyatch as Reagan was beyond scary, though. She kind of looks like Peter Falk and Martin Short put in a microwave. A better costume idea for the ladies would have been to go as former View co-hosts. Whoppi could have been Star Jones, Joy could be Meredith, Sherri could be Lisa Ling, Elisabeth could be Debbie, and Barbara would be great as Rosie!

No, it's not true. So instead of spreading lies, why don't you go learn the proper use of apostrophes.

Sat, Nov 1, 2008 at 11:48 AM EST

Sorry Arod it's true and hopefully Congress will put it's foot down.

Arod Sat, Nov 1, 2008 at 11:28 AM EST

When did Obama say he's going to raise taxes on those making $40,000? Please cite your references or post your link. If you can't, then you should probably reconsider spreading lies and misinformation. Sorry, just because someone from the McCain campaign or Joe the plumber made that statement does not make it true.

Hasselback-as-Reagan gets my vote because of the face makeup. Babawa does look oddly like Washington there, but Whoopi Goldberg as FDR is kind of a WTF moment.

Stephanie T. Sat, Nov 1, 2008 at 11:03 AM EST

H at first I thought about voting for Obama however, when he said that he was going to raise taxes especially on those who make about 40 thousand a year because he thinks that 40 thousand is a lot of money, I thought that he was nuts. I make 43 K, and in todays society with rising real estate costs, it's not enough money. The thing is that Obama honestly believes that his plan is similar to Scandinavian/Canadian social democracy. It's not even close! His plan is PURE socialism, and it cannot work at all! If Alexis De Touqville existed today, he'd be pointing and laughing in Barack's face!

Bobbi Sat, Nov 1, 2008 at 11:01 AM EST

Barbara was, by far, the creepiest. Not only did she look like George Washington, she kept attempting to speak as she imagined he spoke due to his bad teeth. It was awful and most of the time impossible to understand her.

DanOregon Sat, Nov 1, 2008 at 05:10 AM EST

Hasselback looks more like Dennis Kucinich or Alfalfa. Why not a brown suit?

Arod Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 11:22 PM EST

Gosh darn it, H. You are so clever!

Obama is as much of a Socialist as you are witty.

VW Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 08:40 PM EST

I think this was the dumbest thing I have seen in a long time.

aa Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 08:05 PM EST

i think the penny thing was actually kinda funny.
the creepiest is barbara though. but only because she looks like she really could be george washington.

H Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 06:53 PM EST

I know what Obama can dress up as for Halloween -
KARL MARX, no wait he doesn't have to play dress up - He is Karl Marx!

Kerri Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 06:02 PM EST

I was so disappointed today! I was looking forward to the Halloween show and getting a break from the political "talk". They usually have such a fun show for Halloween - NOT THIS YEAR!

CandyMaize Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 05:26 PM EST

I had 'The View' on this morning .. and I found them talking about the people their costumes were based on to be boring & not fun (or funny). I realize the elections are next week .. but I didn't enjoy their costume selections at all.
The only slightly entertaining part was when Whoopi as FDR ate some candy corn and then was able to get out of the wheelchair and walk. And I only found that SLIGHTLY entertaining .. in a large part because of my username and the fact that yesterday (Oct 30th) was National Candy Corn Day.

Wes Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 04:41 PM EST

Hasselbeck is a puppet, she might as well look like one.

Andie Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 04:25 PM EST

Elisabeth always scares me, costume or not.

Bob Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 03:33 PM EST

When Barbara walked out in the beginning, I didn't even recognize her. I thought it was an old man dressed up as George Washington.

And poor Sherri. That costume seems like a sorority hazing gone wrong.

missbrody Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 03:18 PM EST

Well, that just totally brightened my day... in a soul-scarringly disturbing way.

mcdrama Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 03:17 PM EST

hasselback does look like a ventriloquist's dummy and at first I thought joy behar was sarah palin dressed up as a man.

Lauren Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 03:14 PM EST

I don't get it...what's supposed to "freak" us out about the costumes? They're in costume (good costumes) on Halloween...Yes, aaand....??

David Bruggeman Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 03:02 PM EST

From the long shot, Elizabeth looks a lot more like Dennis Kucinich than the Gipper.

econruth Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 02:52 PM EST

Barbara Walters (in that pic at least) actually does look a lot like Washington. I can't believe that no one picked Chester A. Arthur or Franklin Pierce.. Where's the love?

adam rich Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 02:46 PM EST

Sherri was a penny because her skin tone naturally complements the costume I think, it was an attempt to be clever. While I am personally disturbed by the view as a whole, I think the costumes aren't too bad. She's not poking fun at our country's financial situation, whoever said that. We have a saying in my profession, quit nuking it.

COUNT BARACKULA OBAMA Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 02:25 PM EST

Elizabeth Hasselbeck freaks me out because she is just so ummm.. cognitively challenged! She had to have graduated from the Short Bus Academy!

Stephanie T. Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 02:18 PM EST

I think that Sherri was poking fun at our current economic situation.

Dom Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 02:10 PM EST

Oh my God, Hasselbeck DOES look like a puppet. AGH.

lisa Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 02:06 PM EST

Did anyone on staff realize that a penny is not the same thing as Abraham Lincoln? A top hat and black suit would have done the job just fine. this is further proof that Sherri is a moron, funny in sitcoms, but an actual moron.

Crystal Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 02:04 PM EST

I love 'em. I mean, shouldn't halloween costumes BE creepy?! I actually like Joys!

MRF Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 02:02 PM EST

I had a hard time voting for the creepiest costume since they all look just awful.

JohnO Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 01:35 PM EST

Barbara talking like she had false teeth was very freaky.

ptk Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 01:29 PM EST

Those costume designers must hate Sherri. Her costume isn't particularly creepy, but it is by far the most awkward to wear!

Ceballos Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 01:28 PM EST

Elisabeth Hasselbeck already kinda freaks me out, so she wins with a nice assist from the wrinkle lines around her mouth that make her look like a puppet.

Stephanie T. Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 01:28 PM EST

Whoopi and Liz tie. I mean what the...?

Winona Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 01:16 PM EST

Whoopi looks like Kenan-Thompson-as-Whoopi-Goldberg-as-FDR..
